Abstract Tea is identified as the second most consumed drink in the world, and its frequent intake is related to several benefits to human health, considering its antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, diuretic, calming, and above all, antioxidant effects. These effects are often associated with the action of the phenolic compounds contained in these infusions. In Brazil, among the most consumed infusions are the teas of chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), anise (Pimpinella anisum L.), yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil), peppermint (Mentha piperita L.), and green/black tea (Camellia sinensis L.). Therefore, said popularity is the reason why the mentioned species were chosen to be evaluated on inflammatory enzymes. The activity of phospholipases A2 was reduced by more than 25% after treatment with black tea and yerba mate. The most significant inhibition of protease activity was observed after incubation with black tea (40.74%), green tea (31.48%) and yerba mate (25.93%). Infusions of black and green tea reduced hemolysis in semisolid and liquid media, and for the latter, reductions of up to 50% of hemolytic activity were observed, indicating an anti-inflammatory potential of the samples. Plasma incubations with green tea, black tea and lemon balm and subsequent addition of venom (1:10 ratio; tea:PBS, v:v) prolonged the coagulation time of citrated plasma by approximately twice compared to the positive control. All controls with pure tea had a thrombolytic character, in higher proportions than the venom control, especially chamomile (273.55% dissolution). Phenolic compounds derived from phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins are identified as the main agents that promote the biological effects observed in this study. This is mainly due to their anti-catalytic properties exerted on inflammatory enzymes and as chelating agents of enzymatic co-factors. The evaluated teas showed potential for nutraceutical use, thus pointing to the possibility of use as an adjuvant in the treatment of diseases linked to hemostasis.

Abstract We describe the toxicity of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in two aquatic species: Danio rerio and Artemia salina. Fish were exposed to 25 mg L-1, 50 mg L-1, and 100 mg L-1 MWCNTs for 7 days. After exposure, the gills from D. rerio showed lamellar fusion and epithelial lifting in the secondary lamellae, and vasodilation in the primary lamellae. In the gills, heat shock protein 70 and Bax (pro apoptotic member) were stained more intensely in the treated groups than in the control group. The nauplii of A. salina were exposed to 25 µg L-1, 50 µg L-1, and 100 µg L-1 MWCNTs for 96 h. After exposure, the nauplii from the control group presented 20 % mortality, whereas the 25 µg mL-1, 50 µg mL-1, and 100 µg L-1 groups had 46.7 %, 70 %, and 100 % mortality, respectively. The nauplii exposed to 25 µg mL1 and 50 µg mL1 MWCNTs had black aggregates in the intestine because of the uptake of nanomaterials. In addition, the 25 µg mL-1 and 50 µg mL-1 MWCNT groups had black aggregates attached onto the body surface, appendages of the second pair, and mandibles.The results revealed the toxic effects of MWCNTs on the two aquatic organisms, and both species showed great potential for toxicological evaluation of MWCNTs in aquatic environments.

Research to identify plant bioactive compounds led to the evolution of extraction methods. This study optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) to extract the flavonoids of Croton grewioides Baill. species contributing to characterize the polar extract profile and understand the antioxidant potential of these plant constituents. The use of experimental design and statistical treatments enabled the determination of the ideal conditions for each technique. The extracts of five accessions of C. grewioides were obtained under the optimized extraction conditions and were analyzed using ultra high-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-Orbitrap MS) operating at negative ionization mode for flavonoids detection. The accurate experimental mass obtained to the main compounds was used to attribute the molecular formula. Chemical structures of the main compounds detected were proposed using structure data bases. Chemometric analysis were performed with two FT-Orbitrap MS spectra samples using the identified metabolites and, the antioxidant activity data, showing that for this species the MAE was most effective in extracting the antioxidant compounds. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological indices of sour passion fruit under brackish water irrigation strategies and potassium fertilization. The study was carried out under field conditions in São Domingos, PB, Brazil, using a randomized block design in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, with treatments consisting of six brackish water irrigation strategies (irrigation with moderately saline (1.3 dS m-1) water throughout the crop cycle - WS; irrigation with high-salinity (4.0 dS m-1) water in the vegetative stage - VE; flowering stage - FL; fruiting stage - FR; successively in the vegetative/flowering stages - VE/FL; and vegetative/fruiting stages - VE/FR) and two doses of potassium (207 and 345 g K2O per plant per year, corresponding, respectively, to 60 and 100% of recommendation), with four replicates and three plants per plot. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 reduced the osmotic and water potentials in the leaf blade, synthesis of chlorophylls a and b, transpiration, and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency of sour passion fruit, regardless of the development stage. Salt stress in the vegetative, flowering, fruiting, and successively in the vegetative/flowering and vegetative/fruiting stages increases intercellular electrolyte leakage in sour passion fruit. Fertilization with 100% of the K recommendation increased stomatal conductance, CO2 assimilation rate, and instantaneous water use efficiency of sour passion fruit cv. BRS GA1 under irrigation with water of 1.3 dS m-1 throughout the crop cycle.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os índices fisiológicos do maracujazeiro-azedo sob estratégias de irrigação com água salobra e adubação potássica. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida em condições de campo em São Domingos, PB, Brasil, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 6 × 2, sendo os tratamentos constituídos de seis estratégias de irrigação com águas salobras (irrigação com água de moderada salinidade (1,3 dS m-1) durante todo ciclo - WS; irrigação com água de alta salinidade (4,0 dS m-1) na fase vegetativa - VE; floração - FL; frutificação - FR; nas fases sucessivas vegetativa/floração - VE/FL; e vegetativa/frutificação - VE/FR) e duas doses de potássio (207 e 345 g de K2O por planta por ano, correspondendo a 60 e 100% da recomendação), com quatro repetições e três plantas por parcela. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 diminuiu o potencial osmótico e hídrico no limbo foliar, a síntese de clorofila a e b, a transpiração e a eficiência instantânea de carboxilação do maracujazeiro-azedo, independente da fase de desenvolvimento. O estresse salino na fase vegetativa, floração, frutificação e de forma sucessiva nas fases vegetativa/floração e vegetativa/frutificação aumenta o extravasamento de eletrólitos no maracujazeiro-azedo. A adubação com 100% da recomendação de K aumentou a condutância estomática, a taxa de assimilação de CO2 e a eficiência instantânea no uso da água do maracujazeiro-azedo cv. BRS GA1 sob irrigação com água de 1,3 dS m-1 durante todo ciclo de cultivo.

RESUMO No semiárido brasileiro a ocorrência de fontes de águas com níveis elevados de sais se destaca como fator limitante para produção da maioria das culturas sob condições irrigadas. Desenvolveu-se esta pesquisa com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade física e química de frutos de maracujazeiro-azedo sob estratégias de irrigação com água salobra e doses de potássio. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida em condições de campo, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 6 × 2, sendo os tratamentos constituídos de seis estratégias de irrigação com águas salobras (SE - irrigação com água de 1,3 dS m-1 durante todo ciclo; irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 na fase vegetativa - VE; floração - FL; frutificação - FR; nas fases sucessivas vegetativa/floração - VE/FL; vegetativa/frutificação - VE/FR) e duas doses de potássio 60 e 100% (345 g de K2O por planta por ano) da recomendação, com quatro repetições e três plantas por parcela. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 na fase de floração ou quando utilizada de forma contínua na fase vegetativa e de floração reduziu a produtividade e o tamanho dos frutos de maracujazeiro-azedo. Adubação com 60% da recomendação de K proporcionou a produção de frutos de maracujazeiro-azedo com maior diâmetro polar. É viável o cultivo de maracujazeiro-azedo sob irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 nas fases de floração e frutificação e adubação com 60% da recomendação de K sem perdas nos teores de ácido ascórbico e açúcares solúveis totais.

ABSTRACT In the Brazilian semiarid region, the occurrence of water sources with high salt concentrations stands out as a limiting factor for the production of most crops under irrigated conditions. This research was conducted to evaluate the physical and chemical quality of sour passion fruit as a function of brackish water irrigation strategies and potassium doses. The experiment was carried out under field conditions using a randomized block design in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, consisting of six strategies of irrigation with brackish water (irrigation with water of 1.3 dS m-1 throughout the cycle - WS; irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 in the vegetative stage - VE; flowering stage - FL; fruiting stage - FR; in the successive vegetative/flowering stages - VE/FL; vegetative/fruiting stages - VE/FR) and two potassium doses: 60 and 100% (345 g of K2O per plant per year) of recommendation, with four replicates and three plants per plot. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 in the flowering stage or continuously in the vegetative and flowering stages reduced the yield and size of sour passion fruit. Fertilization with 60% of K is recommended for the production of sour passion fruits with greater polar diameter. It is feasible to cultivate sour passion fruit under irrigation with 4.0 dS m-1 of water in the flowering and fruiting stages and fertilization with 60% of the K recommendation without losses in ascorbic acid and total soluble sugars.

Abstract Klebsiella pneumoniae is a species of Gram-negative bacteria related to a wide range of infections and high rates of drug resistance. The combined use of antibacterial agents is one of the strategies that has been analyzed in recent years as part of the alternatives in the treatment of drug-resistant infections. Recently, the antibacterial activity of of 2-chloro-N-(4-fluoro-3-nitrophenyl)acetamide has been demonstrated against K. pneumoniae, also indicating that this acetamide did not show significant cytotoxic potential in preliminary tests. Thus, it becomes an interesting substance for future studies that explore its antimicrobial capacity, including investigating its association with antibacterial drugs. Based on this, this research aimed to analyze the effects of the association of 2-chloro-N-(4-fluoro-3-nitrophenyl)acetamide (CFA) with ciprofloxacin, cefepime, ceftazidime, meropenem and imipenem against K. pneumoniae strains. The results showed additivity when the substance was combined with ciprofloxacin and cefepime, indifference when associated with ceftazidime and synergistic effect when combined with meropenem and imipenem. Thus, the acetamide was able to optimize the effects of antibacterial drugs, reducing the concentrations necessary to cause bacterial death. These data indicate a potential future clinical use of these combinations, and further studies are needed to analyze this viability.

ABSTRACT Objective: Evaluate the influence of the most used surgical positioners for lumbar lordosis (LL) in asymptomatic individuals. Methods: Cross-sectional study based on demographic data and radiographic parameters of asymptomatic individuals. For this study, 16 volunteers, 15 males, and one female were selected, and the average age was 24.6 years. They were submitted to lateral radiographs of the lumbar spine in orthostasis in use of the following positioners: gel cushion, gel cushion with hip extension, four-point Relton-Hall and Wilson-type positioner. Results: The mean LL in the orthostatic position was 58.76º, whereas in the gel cushion positioner it was 52.51; on the gel cushion with hip extension of 58.23º, Relton-Hall/4points 37.63º and, finally, on the Wilson-type positioner of 40.87º. An average reduction of 5.42º of the LL was observed when positioning on the gel cushion in relation to the orthostasis. In the linear regression analysis, the data presented statistically significant results (p<0.05), demonstrating that the L4-S1 segment influences 60% in LL. Conclusion: The positioner with gel cushion and hip extension reproduces an LL similar to physiological values. Relton-Hall and Wilson-type positioners with hip flexion promote hypolordotic positioning compared to basal lordosis in orthostasis. Hip extension alone generated a 5.96º increase in the subject’s lordosis. The L4-S1 segment has a 60% influence on the LL when the individuals are in the positioners. RESUMEN: Objetivo: Evaluar la influencia de los posicionadores quirúrgicos para la lordosis lumbar (LL) en individuos asintomáticos. Métodos: Estudio transversal con datos demográficos y parámetros radiográficos de individuos asintomáticos. Utilizamos 16 voluntarios, 15 hombres y una mujer, edad media de 24,6 años. Sometidos a radiografías laterales de la columna lumbar en ortostasis en los siguientes posicionadores: almohadilla de gel, almohadilla de gel con extensión de cadera, posicionador de cuatro puntos y posicionador tipo Wilson. Resultados: El promedio de LL en posición ortostática fue de 58,76º, en el posicionador de almohadilla de gel fue de 52,51º; en almohadilla de gel con extensión de cadera de 58,23º, 4 puntos 37,63º y, por último, en posicionador tipo Wilson de 40,87º. Se observó una reducción promedio de 5,42º de LL al posicionarse sobre la almohadilla de gel en relación a ortostasis. En el análisis de regresión lineal, los datos presentaron resultados estadísticamente significativos (p<0,05), demostrando que el segmento L4-S1 tiene una influencia de 60% en LL. Conclusión: El posicionador con almohadilla de gel y con extensión de cadera reproduce una LL similar a la fisiológica. Relton-Hall y Wilson con flexión de cadera promueven el posicionamiento hipolordótico en comparación con la lordosis basal. La extensión de la cadera por sí sola fue capaz de generar un aumento de 5,96º en la lordosis. El segmento L4-S1 tiene una influencia del 60% en la LL cuando los individuos están en los posicionadores. Nivel de evidencia III; Estudio Transversal Controlado.

Métodos: Estudo transversal com dados demográficos e parâmetros radiográficos de indivíduos assintomáticos. Utilizamos 16 voluntários, sendo 15 do gênero masculino e uma do gênero feminino, com idade média de 24,6 anos. Foram submetidos a realização de radiografias em perfil da coluna lombar em ortostase nos seguintes posicionadores: coxim em gel, coxim em gel com extensão do quadril, Relton-Hall em quatro pontos e posicionador tipo Wilson. Resultados: A média de LL na posição ortostática foi de 58,76º, já no posicionador coxim em gel de 52,51; no coxim em gel com extensão dos quadris de 58,23º, Relton-Hall/4pontos 37,63º e, por último, no posicionador tipo Wilson, de 40,87º. Houve redução média de 5,42º da LL ao posicionar no coxim em gel em relação a ortostase, na análise de regressão linear os dados apresentaram resultados estaticamente significativos (p<0,05), demostrando que o seguimento L4-S1 apresenta uma influência de 60% na LL. Conclusão: O posicionador coxins em gel e extensão do quadril reproduz uma LL semelhante à fisiológica. Posicionadores do tipo Relton-Hall e Wilson com flexão do quadril promovem um posicionamento hipolordótico comparada a lordose basal em ortostase. A extensão do quadril por si só foi capaz de gerar um aumento de 5,96º na lordose do indivíduo. O seguimento L4-S1 apresenta uma influência de 60% na LL quando os indivíduos estão nos posicionadores. Abstract The iAtlantic Project has established an international collaborative strategy to improve mapping and characterization of deep and open ocean ecosystems in understudied regions of the Atlantic and evaluate their health. In December 2022, the first iAtlantic expedition in the South Atlantic set off to map and explore seafloor ecosystems in the Santos Basin slope (200-1,000 m depths) in collaboration with the Petrobras ‘Santos Basin - Regional Characterization Project.’ The 17-day ‘iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras’ cruise was conducted on board the research vessel NPqHOc Vital de Oliveira (Brazilian Navy) and performed (a) water column structure characterization, (b) seafloor morphology mapping, (c) description of benthic habitats and communities by seafloor imagery and biological/ geological sampling, and (d) ex-situ experiments to assess the functioning of sedimentary ecosystems and their responses to climate-related environmental changes. This study describes the rationale behind the iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras cruise science plan, reports its sampling strategy and methods, and summarizes its collected data and preliminary results.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Systemic Mastocytosis comprises a group of neoplastic diseases characterized by clonal expansion and infiltration of mast cells into several organs. The diagnosis and treatment of this disease may be challenging for non-specialists. Objective: Make suggestions or recommendations in Systemic Mastocytosis based in a panel of Brazilian specialists. Method and results: An online expert panel with 18 multidisciplinary specialists was convened to propose recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of Systemic Mastocytosis in Brazil. Recommendations were based on discussions of topics and multiple-choice questions and were graded using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine 2011 Levels of Evidence Chart. Conclusion: Twenty-two recommendations or suggestions were proposed based on a literature review and graded according to the findings.

Abstract Introduction: The phase I of cardiac rehabilitation have the proposed decrease the effects on the bed rest and better adherence at the phase II. Objective: To analyze the effects of phase I CR in patients undergoing myocardial revascularization and valve changes, through a systematic review of the literature. Method: The review includes randomized clinical trials looking at the effects of phase I. The base date Scopus, Science Direct, Embase & Embase classic OVID. The search was limited between 2000 and 2017, in English Portuguese and Spanish. Results: 298 articles were were eligible, and only four were selected and analyzed. The articles included a population with bypass coronary and two articles with surgery to valve replacement or repair. Regarding quality methodology, Two were rated to be good quality with an evidence level of 1+ and 1++ and a degree of recommendation A y B. The protocols used for treatment include breathing techniques, upper and lower limps exercise and ambulation. Conclusions: The phase I cardiac rehabilitation, could improve lung function and reduce anxiety, this is associated directly with stay hospital post-surgical cardiac patients

Resumen Introducción: La rehabilitación cardíaca de fase I es un programa hospitalario que tiene como objetivo reducir los efectos que se pueden derivar del reposo prolongado en cama e instruir al paciente para el ingreso a la fase ambulatoria de rehabilitación. Objetivo: Analizar los efectos de la rehabilitación cardíaca de fase I en pacientes sometidos a revascularización miocárdica y cambios valvulares, mediante una revisión sistemática de la literatura. Método: La revisión incluyó ensayos clínicos controlados aleatorizados que analizaran los efectos de la rehabilitación cardíaca de fase I. Se emplearon las bases de datos Scopus, ScienceDirect, Embase y Embase classic OVID. La búsqueda se limitó a los artículos publicados entre los años 2000 y 2017, en inglés, portugués y español. Los estudios que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión recibieron un análisis de la calidad metodológica, el nivel de evidencia y el grado de recomendación según las escalas PEDro y Scottish. Resultados: Fueron elegibles 298 artículos, de los cuales cuatro fueron seleccionados y analizados; todos estos incluyeron población que había sido sometida a revascularización quirúrgica cardíaca y dos a población con reparación o reemplazo valvular quirúrgico. En cuanto a la calidad metodológica, dos fueron categorizados como de buena calidad con un nivel de evidencia 1+ y 1++ y un grado de recomendación A y B. Los protocolos de tratamiento utilizados fueron las técnicas respiratorias, los ejercicios activos de extremidades y la deambulación. Conclusiones: La literatura analizada sugiere incluir los procesos de rehabilitación cardíaca de fase I, lo cual puede mejorar la función pulmonar y disminuir la ansiedad, variable que se asoció de manera directa con la estancia hospitalaria en los pacientes posquirúrgicos cardíacos.

Abstract Background: The COVID-19 pandemic may affect youth’s physical and mental well-being, partially because of the countries’ rules to contain the virus from spreading. However, there is still uncertainty about the impact of physical distancing on youth’s mental health. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of feeling agitated, anxious, down, sad, or low mood (FNF) due to physical distance measures and verify which factors are associated with young Portuguese and Brazilian people. Methods: We used cross-sectional data from the instrument “COVID-19 Barometer: Social Opinion” in Portugal (March 2020 and September 2021) and from “COVID-19 Social Thermometer” in Brazil (August 2020 to April 2021); these surveys included data regarding the health and socioeconomic impact on the population. The health and sociodemographic variables of the two countries were summarized as absolute and relative frequencies. A multivariable logistic regression model was fit by country to estimate the relation between FNF and selected variables of interest. Results: Approximately 36% of the sample studied reported anxiety, agitation, sadness, or low mood almost every day in Portugal and 52% in Brazil due to physical distancing. In Portugal, having more than two comorbidities represented a greater chance of experiencing FNF every day or almost every day (odds ratio [OR] = 1.51 [CI: 1.22-1.87]) than those without comorbidities. In contrast, having a university education level represented a protector factor (OR = 0.76 [CI: 0.67-0.88]). In Brazil, being unemployed increased the chance of FNF compared to students (OR = 11.2). Conclusions: Physical distancing measures have impacted the mental well-being of the young population in Portugal and Brazil. The countries must make a quick effort to attend to and protect young people’s well-being and mental health in the changing context of the current pandemic.

Resumo Introdução: A pandemia do COVID-19 pode afetar o bem-estar físico e mental dos jovens, em parte por causa das regras dos países para conter a propagação do vírus. No entanto, ainda há incerteza sobre o impacto do distanciamento físico na saúde mental dos jovens. Objetivou-se estimar a prevalência de sentir-se agitado, ansioso, deprimido ou triste (FNF) devido a medidas de distância física e verificar quais fatores estão associados a jovens portugueses e brasileiros. Métodos: Utilizamos dados transversais do instrumento “COVID-19 Barômetro: Social Opinião” em Portugal (março de 2020 até setembro de 2021) e do “COVID-19 Social termômetro” no Brasil (agosto de 2020 até abril de 2021); essas pesquisas incluíram dados sobre o impacto na saúde e socioeconômicos da população. As variáveis de saúde e sociodemográficas dos dois países foram resumidas em frequências absolutas e relativas. Um modelo de regressão logística multivariável foi ajustado por país para estimar a relação entre a frequência de sentimentos negativos (FNF) e variáveis selecionadas de interesse. Resultados: Aproximadamente 36% da amostra estudada relatou ansiedade, agitação, tristeza ou mau humor; quase todos os dias em Portugal e 52% no Brasil devido ao distanciamento físico. Em Portugal, ter mais de duas comorbidades representou maior chance de apresentar FNF todos os dias ou quase todos os dias (OR = 1,51 [IC 1,22 -1,87]) do que aqueles sem comorbidades. Em contrapartida, ter nível universitário representou fator protetor (OR = 0,76 [IC 0,67-0,88]). No Brasil, estar desempregado aumentou a chance de FNF em relação aos estudantes (OR = 11,2). Conclusões: As medidas de distanciamento físico têm impactado o bem-estar mental da população jovem em Portugal e no Brasil. Os países devem fazer um esforço rápido para atender e proteger o bem-estar e a saúde mental dos jovens no contexto de mudança da atual pandemia.

Resumo: O objetivo deste artigo foi avaliar os fatores socioeconômicos, familiares e individuais associados ao desenvolvimento infantil no primeiro ano de vida, entre famílias em vulnerabilidade social. Trata-se de uma análise transversal, com dados da linha de base de um ensaio randomizado. O estudo incluiu 3.242 crianças < 12 meses de idade, residentes em 30 municípios de cinco regiões do Brasil. A escolha de estados e municípios foi intencional, tendo como base a implementação do Programa Criança Feliz. A amostra foi selecionada a partir de crianças elegíveis para o Programa Criança Feliz, cujo objetivo é promover a estimulação e o desenvolvimento infantil. O Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) foi utilizado para avaliação do desenvolvimento infantil. Um modelo de análise multinível em três níveis (estado, município e indivíduos), usando teste de Wald para heterogeneidade e tendência linear, estimou a média do ASQ-3 e intervalo de 95% de confiança (IC95%). Análises foram ajustadas para potenciais confundidores. Foram analisadas informações de 3.061 (94,4%) crianças com dados disponíveis para ASQ-3. Escores de desenvolvimento infantil (total e em todos os domínios) foram cerca de 12% menores em crianças nascidas pré-termo e com restrição do crescimento intrauterino (pequenas para idade gestacional). Observou-se menores escores em filhos de mães com baixa escolaridade, com sintomas de depressão, com duas ou mais crianças menores de sete anos residindo no domicílio e que não relataram autopercepção de apoio/ajuda durante a gestação. Conclui-se que características potencialmente modificáveis (escolaridade, depressão materna e prematuridade/restrição do crescimento intrauterino) apresentaram maior impacto na redução do escore de desenvolvimento em todos os domínios avaliados.

Abstract: The study aimed to assess socioeconomic, family, and individual factors associated with infant development (i.e., in the first year of life) among families with social vulnerability. This was a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from a randomized trial. The study included 3,242 children < 12 months of age living in 30 municipalities from five regions of Brazil. The choice of states and municipalities was intentional, based on the implementation of the Brazilian Happy Child Program. The sample was selected among eligible children for the Brazilian Happy Child Program, and the objective was the promotion of infant development. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) was used to assess infant development. A three-level analytical model (state, municipality, and individuals), using the Wald test for heterogeneity and linear trend, estimated the mean ASQ-3 and 95% confidence interval (95%CI). The analyses were adjusted for potential confounders. Information was analyzed for 3,061 (94.4%) children with available data for ASQ-3. Infant development scores (total and in all the domains) were some 12% lower in preterm children and those with intrauterine growth restriction (small for gestational age). Lower scores were seen in children of mothers with low schooling, depressive symptoms, two or more children under seven years of age living in the household, and who did not report self-perceived support or help during the pregnancy. In conclusion, potentially modifiable characteristics (schooling, maternal depression, and prematurity/intrauterine growth restriction) showed greater impact on reducing the infant development score in all the target domains.

Resumen: El objetivo fue evaluar los factores socioeconómicos, familiares e individuales, asociados al desarrollo infantil en el primer año de vida, entre familias con vulnerabilidad social. Se trata de un análisis transversal, con datos de la base de referencia de un ensayo aleatorio. El estudio incluyó a 3.242 niños < 12 meses de edad, residentes en 30 municipios de cinco regiones de Brasil. La elección de estados y municipios fue intencional, considerando como base la implementación del Programa Niño Feliz. La muestra se seleccionó a partir de niños elegibles para el Programa Niño Feliz, cuyo objetivo es promover la estimulación y el desarrollo infantil. Se utilizó el Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) para la evaluación del desarrollo infantil. Un modelo de análisis multinivel en tres niveles (estado, municipio e individuos), usando el test de Wald para la heterogeneidad y tendencia lineal, estimó la media del ASQ-3 y el intervalo de 95% de confianza (IC95%). Los análisis se ajustaron para potenciales factores de confusión. Se analizó información de 3.061 (94,4%) niños con datos disponibles para ASQ-3. Las puntuaciones de desarrollo infantil (total y en todos los dominios) fueron cerca de un 12% menores en niños nacidos pretérmino y con restricción del crecimiento intrauterino (pequeños para la edad gestacional). Se observaron menores puntuaciones en hijos de madres con baja escolaridad, con síntomas de depresión, con dos o más niños menores de siete años residiendo en el domicilio y que no informaron autopercepción de apoyo/ayuda durante la gestación. Se concluye que las características potencialmente modificables (escolaridad, depresión materna y prematuridad/restricción del crecimiento intrauterino) presentaron un mayor impacto en la reducción de la puntuación de desarrollo en todos los dominios evaluados.

Abstract: COVID-19 rapidly spread across the world in an unprecedented outbreak with a massive number of infected and fatalities. The pandemic was heavily discussed and searched on the internet, which generated big amounts of data related to it. This led to the possibility of attempting to forecast coronavirus indicators using the internet data. For this study, Google Trends statistics for 124 selected search terms related to pandemic were used in an attempt to find which keywords had the best Spearman correlations with a lag, as well as a forecasting model. It was found that keywords related to coronavirus testing among some others, such as “I have contracted covid”, had high correlations (≥0.7) with few weeks of lag (≤4 weeks). Besides that, the ARIMAX model using those keywords had promising results in predicting the increase or decrease of epidemiological indicators, although it was not able to predict their exact values. Thus, we found that Google Trends data may be useful for predicting outbreaks of coronavirus a few weeks before they happen, and may be used as an auxiliary tool in monitoring and forecasting the disease in Brazil.
