Neste estudo diferenças expressivas foram observadas na estrutura dos ductos eferentes distais (DED) de codorna doméstica Coturnix coturnix, da variedade italiana, mantida em cativeiro experimental durante dois anos, durante as quatro estações do ano. A variabilidade morfológica dos DED foi mais marcante na primavera e no outono, eqüivalendo às fases ativa e quiescente do ciclo reprodutivo anual (ciclo testicular) nesta ave. Nessas fases do ciclo, diferenças significativas foram observadas na ultraestrutura das células principais (P) e ciliadas (C) do epitélio de revestimento tubular e nos calibres tubulares. Estes tiveram valores médios maiores na primavera, com valores similares no verão e no inverno, e valores médios menores observados no outono. Na primavera, no citoplasma apical de células P, notou-se maior complexidade organelar, inferindo-se a ocorrência de processos endocitóticos ativos. A quiescência outonal caracterizou-se por redução do calibre tubular dos DED, luz tubular vazia de espermatozóides, degenerações de organelas citoplasmáticas e "debridamentos" citoplasmáticos apicais em células P e C. No inverno e verão, correspondentes às fases recrudescente e regressiva, respectivamente, do ciclo testicular nesta espécie, os dados obtidos foram, de modo geral, similares aos observados na primavera.

Some expressive differences were noted on the distal efferent ducts (DED) morphology in domestic quail of the Italian variety along the year. The birds were maintained on experimental captive breeding along two consecutive years, before the morphologic studies. Morphologic differences on the DED had been more evident in spring and autumn respectively, the active and quiescent phases of the annual testis cycle. Variability more expressive was noted among the principal (P) and ciliated (C) epithelial cells and in tubular diameters of DED, during the two focused seasons. Spring features of DED were marked by relative enlargement of the passageways, with similar results in summer and winter, and characteristic organelle development on the apical cytoplasm of P cells, allowing to conclude presence of active process of endocytosis. Autumn quiescence was marked by an enfolding pattern of all the tubular passageways, lacking of spermatozoa and small amount of heterogeneous material inside their luminal compartments, followed by presence of ultrastructural degenerative features in apical cytoplasm of P cells and C cells in DED passageways. Tubular features verified in DED during winter and summer were minor and similar to those described in spring. Summer and winter were respectively considered the recrudescent and regressive phases of the testis cycle in these species, based on the spermatogenesis cycle analysed in all the seasons of the year as well as on the base the morphologic features here found.

A espermiogênese que ocorre em piracanjuba Brycon orbignyanus pode ser dividida em quatro etapas morfológicas, cujas características principais consistem em reduções dos volumes citoplasmático, nuclear e celular, e compactação da cromatina nuclear das espermátides, sendo que as etapas espermiogenéticas ocorrem simultaneamente. Ao final da espermiogênese, quando as espermátides atingem nível elevado de diferenciação, os núcleos se tornam mais compactos e os citoplasmas se tornam reduzidos. Estas modificações resultam na formação de células altamente diferenciadas, os espermatozóides com cabeça, peça intermediária e flagelo bem definidos. As espermátides e os espermatozóides foram observados em cistos germinativos, mas também podem ser encontrados na luz dos túbulos seminíferos.

Spermiogenesis in Brycon orbignyanus may be divided in four stages, which consist mainly in reduction of cytoplasmic, nuclear and cellular volumes and compactation of the nuclear chromatin, whose stages of the process occur simultaneously. At the end of the spermiogenesis, when the spermatids reach high levels of differentiation, the nuclei become more compact and cytoplasms become reduced. These modifications result in the formation of new highly differentiated cells, the spermatozoa. Spermatozoa may be observed predominantly in cysts, like spermatids, or inside the lumen of the seminiferous tubules. Ultrastructurally, three different parts have been clearly identified in Brycon orbignyanus spermatozoon: head, middle-piece and flagellum.

Estudo morfométrico das porções cranial, média e caudal do epidídimo, no decorrer do ano, foi realizado utilizando-se 72 epidídimos de codornas domésticas, sendo coletados 6 epidídimos por mês. As porções do epidídimo foram avaliadas morfometricamente após a obtenção de 5 lâminas histológicas de 7 µm de espessura, de cada animal, e coradas pela técnica de Hematoxilina de Harris. As medidas morfométricas foram obtidas de 4 secções transversais, escolhidas aleatoriamente, de cada corte, totalizando 120 medidas por animal/mês. Através da objetiva de 40x, foram mensurados área do epidídimo, diâmetro e altura do epitélio de revestimento dos dúctulos eferentes proximais, distais e ductos epididimários com o auxílio de um analisador de imagens acoplado a um microscópio binocular "Zeiss". Os dados foram tratados estatisticamente através de um programa computacional "SAS". Analisando-se os resultados, verificou-se que a porção caudal do epidídimo apresentou-se significativamente maior que a porção cranial em relação à área do epidídimo e o diâmetro máximo do dúctulo eferente distal e epididimário, evidenciando, portanto, que a porção caudal é mais ativa que as porções média e cranial, à semelhança do que ocorre com os mamíferos.

A morphometrical study of the cranial, medial and caudal portions of the epididymis from 72 domestic quail was performed during one year, being six epididymides collected each month. The epididymal portions were morphometrically evaluated through five histological slides (7 µm thick) from each bird. The slides were stained by Harri’s hematoxilin. The morphometrical measures were taken from 4 transversal sections, randomly chosen, from each organs (120 measurements per bird each month). Measures were taken from the epididymal area. The diameter and thickness of the epithelium in the proximal and distal efferent ductules and the epididymal ducts were also measured, using 40x magnification lenses and an image analyzer coupled with a binocular Zeiss microscope. Statistical analyses were performed using the SAS computer program. The analyses of the results showed that the caudal portion of the epididymus was significantly larger than the cranial portion when comparing the epididymal area and the major diameter of the distal and epididymal efferent ductules. These data suggested that the caudal portion is more active than the medial and cranial ones, similar to what occurs in mammals.

A região epididimária do pombo doméstico compreende a parte principal da rede testicular, os dúctulos eferentes do testículo e o ducto epididimário. Os canais epiteliais da rede testicular são contínuos com o segmento extratesticular da rede, o qual, por sua vez, é seqüente com os dúctulos eferentes proximais e distais e, finalmente, o ducto epididimário se forma em continuidade aos eferentes distais. O epitélio de revestimento deste sistema tubular extratesticular é cúbico simples na rede testicular e pseudo-estratificado colunar nos outros ductos da região epididimária, com células ciliadas e não-ciliadas presentes principalmente nos dúctulos eferentes. As características ultra-estruturais das células epiteliais dos túbulos da região epididimária do pombo, com base comparativa, permitiram inferir que a reabsorção de fluido seminífero parece ser a função principal dessas células, embora outros papéis citofisiológicos foram também propostos, tais como: endocitose adsorptiva, ciliogênese, e possivelmente secreção apócrina nas células não-ciliadas escuras.

The epididymal region of the domestic pigeon comprises the main part of the rete testis, the efferent ductules of the testis and the ductus epididymidis. The channels of the rete testis albuginic segment are continuous with the extratesticular rete testis segment. This part is sequent to the proximal and distal efferent ductules, and at last the epididymal duct is formed in continuity with the distal efferent ductules. The epithelium that lines this tubular system is simple cuboidal in rete testis complex and pseudostratified columnar in the other parts of the spermatic ducts, with ciliated and non-ciliated cells mainly observed in the efferent ductules. Based on the ultrastructural features of the epithelial cell types of the epididymal region of pigeon, perhaps resorption process of seminal fluid is the main function of the epithelial cells. Comparatively, other cytophysiological roles are also proposed such as: adsorptive endocitose, an apocrine secretory process in dark non-ciliated cells and active ciliogenesis in ciliated cells.
