Resumo O estudo teve como objetivo determinar os componentes bioativos e atividades antibacterianas de folhas de extrato metanólico frio (CMMEL) de Artemisia absinthium L. CMMEL foi testado para fitoquímicos, análises GC-MS foram realizadas para identificar os componentes bioativos e propriedades antibacterianas. A análise fitoquímica da CMMEL revelou a presença de carboidratos, esteroides, saponinas e aminoácidos. A análise GC-MS de CMMEL de A. absinthium L. revelou vários compostos bioativos exclusivos, incluindo margaspidina, estigmasterol, ácido octadecanoico, hexadecanoico, corimbolona e biciclo [2.2.1] heptan-2. O espectro antibacteriano de CMMEL pode ser sequenciado como Streptococcus pyogenes (8,83 ± 1,8 mm) > Escherichia coli (7,6 ± 0,6 mm) > Bacillus subtilis (6,6 ± 1,6 mm) > Klebsiella pneumoniae (6,5 ± 0,3 mm) > Pseudomonas aeruginosa (6,1 ± 1,1 mm) > Staphylococcus aureus (5,23 ± 0,8 mm). Embora o CMMEL de A. absinthium L. tenha mostrado a presença de muitos compostos bioativos, mas não inibiu substancialmente o crescimento de bactérias gram-positivas ou gram-negativas, de acordo com os achados.

Abstract The study aimed to determine the bioactive components and antibacterial activities of cold methanolic extract leaves (CMMEL) of Artemisia absinthium L. CMMEL was tested for phytochemicals, GC-MS analyses was performed to identify the bioactive components, and anti-bacterial properties. The phytochemical analysis of CMMEL revealed the presence of carbohydrates, steroids, saponins, and amino acids. GC-MS analysis of CMMEL of A. absinthium L. revealed several unique bioactive compounds, including margaspidin, stigmasterol, octadecanoic acid, hexadecanoic, corymbolone, and bicyclo [2.2.1] heptan-2. The antibacterial spectrum of CMMEL can be sequenced as Streptococcus pyogenes (8.83 ± 1.8 mm) > Escherichia coli (7.6 ± 0.6 mm) > Bacillus subtilis (6.6 ± 1.6 mm) > Klebsiella pneumoniae (6.5 ± 0.3 mm) > Pseudomonas aeruginosa (6.1 ± 1.1 mm) > Staphylococcus aureus (5.23 ± 0.8 mm). Although the CMMEL of A. absinthium L. showed the presence of many bioactive compounds but did not substantially inhibit the growth of Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria, according to the findings.

ABSTRACT Purpose: Only a few trials have compared the intraocular pressure-lowering effects of prostaglandin analogs to carbonic anhydrase inhibitor plus beta-blocker fixed-dose combination therapy in patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma. Furthermore, the influence of the glaucoma stage on the intraocular pressure-lowering effects of these drug types has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to compare the IOP-lowering efficacy of latanoprost, a prostaglandin analog versus dorzolamide/timolol fixed combination, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor plus beta-blocker fixed-dose combination therapy, in patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma based on glaucoma stage. Methods: The data of 32 eyes (32 patients) diagnosed with uniocular pseudoexfoliative glaucoma and treated with topical latanoprost (Group 1) or dorzolamide/timolol fixed combination (Group 2) were retrospectively assessed. The groups were subdivided into early and moderate-advanced stages. Patients’ demographics, baseline intraocular pressure, final intraocular pressure, and intraocular pressure difference (the difference between the baseline and final intraocular pressure) were determined from medical records and compared between groups and according to glaucoma stage. Results: The mean drug use duration was 17.7 ± 13.5 months. No significant differences in mean baseline intraocular pressure, mean final intraocular pressure and mean intraocular pressure difference between Groups 1 and 2. In Group 2, the mean intraocular pressure difference was significantly greater in patients with early versus moderate-advanced stage glaucoma (p=0.015). The difference, however, was not detected in Group 1. The mean intraocular pressure difference in early-stage glaucoma was significantly greater in Group 2 versus 1 (p=0.033). Conclusions: Latanoprost and dorzolamide/timolol fixed combination are effective treatments for newly diagnosed pseudoexfoliative glaucoma. In early-stage pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, greater intraocular pressure reduction was noted with dorzolamide/timolol fixed combination than with latanoprost; thus, dorzolamide/timolol fixed combination should be considered when a significant decrease in intraocular pressure is desired in early-stage glaucoma.

RESUMO Objetivo: Estudos limitados examinaram os efeitos de redução de pressão intraocular de análogos de prostaglandina versus inibidor de anidrase carbônica mais terapia de combinação de dose fixa beta-bloqueador em pacientes com glaucoma pseudoesfoliativo. Além disso, a influência do estágio de glaucoma nos efeitos de redução da pressão intraocular desses tipos de drogas não foi avaliada. Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar a eficácia de redução do IOP do latanoprosta, uma combinação fixa análoga de prostaglandina versus dorzolamida/timolol, um inibidor de anidrase carbônica mais terapia de combinação de dose fixa beta-bloqueador, em pacientes com glaucoma pseudoesfoliativo de acordo com o estágio de glaucoma. Métodos: Os dados de 32 olhos (32 pacientes) diagnosticados com glaucoma pseudoesfoliativo monocular e tratados com latanoprosta tópica (Grupo 1) ou combinação fixa de dorzolamida/timolol (Grupo 2) foram avaliados retrospectivamente. Os grupos foram subdivididos em estágios inicial e moderado-avançado. A demografia dos pacientes, a pressão intraocular da linha de base, a pressão intraocular final e a diferença de pressão intraocular (a diferença entre a pressão intraocular da linha de base e a pressão intraocular final) foram determinadas a partir dos prontuários médicos e comparadas entre os dois grupos e de acordo com o estágio de glaucoma. Resultados: A duração média do uso de drogas foi de 17,7 ± 13,5 meses. Nenhuma diferença significativa foi observada entre os grupos 1 e 2 para a média da pressão intraocularda linha de base, média da pressão intraocular final e média da diferença da pressão intraocular. No Grupo 2, a média da diferença da pressão intraocular foi significativamente maior em pacientes com glaucoma de estágio precoce versus moderado-avançado (p=0,015). No entanto, essa diferença não foi observada no Grupo 1. A média da diferença da pressão intraocular em glaucoma de estágio inicial foi significativamente maior no Grupo 2 versus 1 (p=0,033). Conclusões: Terapias com Latanoprosta e dorzolamida/timolol são tratamentos eficazes para glaucoma pseudoesfoliativo recém-diagnosticado. Observou-se em glaucoma pseudoesfoliativo de estágio inicial, uma maior redução da pressão intraocular com combinação fixa de dorzolamida/timolol do que com latanoprosta; assim, a combinação fixa de dorzolamida/timolol deve ser considerada quando uma diminuição significativa da pressão intraocular é almejada em glaucoma de estágio inicial.

Resumen Los microorganismos están naturalmente asociados con las plantas. El presente experimento se llevó a cabo para aislar bacterias endófitas de las células internas de raíces, tallos, hojas y Tejido capitulear de Senecio glaucus recolectadas en 2 hábitats diversos (costeros y desérticos) de Egipto. Del aislamiento se obtuvieron un total de 10 bacterias endófitas; la mayor diversidad de endófitos bacterianos se observó en raíces y hojas de muestras del desierto. Los aislamientos se reconocieron con base en la morfología, la bioquímica y los genes de la secuencia del ARNr 16S. Todos estos aislados indican la capacidad de producir enzimas como amilasa, celulasa, lipasa, catalasa y proteasa en sus descripciones bioquímicas; los análisis también mostraron una indicación significativa de su potencial para producir hormonas de crecimiento vegetal; como su capacidad para disolver el fosfato. En el mundo y en Egipto, somos los primeros en reportar endófitos bacterianos aislados de Senecio glaucus. Este estudio podría ayudar a determinar el papel de las bacterias endófitas en hábitats severos, así como sus posibles aplicaciones en medicina, biorremediación, agricultura e industria.

Abstract Microorganisms are naturally associated with plants in several ways. The study was conducted to isolate bacteria endophytes from the internal cells of roots, stems, leaves, and capitula of Senecio glaucus collected from 2 diverse (coastal and desert) habitats in Egypt. A total of 10 endophytic bacteria were obtained from the isolation; the highest diversity of bacterial endophytes was observed in desert samples roots and leaves. The isolates were recognized based on morphology, biochemical and 16S rRNA sequence genes. All isolates indicated the ability for enzyme production as amylase, cellulase, lipase, catalase, and protease in their biochemical descriptions; analyses also gave a significant indication of their potential to produce plant growth hormones, as their ability to dissolve Phosphate. In the world and Egypt, we are the first to report bacterial endophytes isolated from Senecio glaucus. This study could aid in determining the role of endophytic bacteria in severe habitats, as well as their potential applications in medicine, bioremediation, agriculture, and industry.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy in elderly patients with rib fractures due to blunt thoracic trauma. METHODS: In this prospective randomized controlled study, geriatric patients were assigned to groups to receive either coolant spray (n=51) or placebo spray (n=50). The visual analog scale scores of all patients were recorded before starting spray application (V0), as well as at 10th (V1), 20th (V2), 30th (V3), 60th (V4), 120th (V5), and 360th (V6) minute. The mean decreases in the visual analog scale scores were calculated. RESULTS: The differences between V0 and V1, V0 and V2, V0 and V3, and V0 and V4 mean visual analog scale scores measured in the coolant spray group were found to be significantly higher (p<0.001). In V1, V2, V3, and V4 measurements, the incidence of “clinical effectiveness” in the coolant spray group was significantly higher than in the placebo group (p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Coolant spray therapy can be used as a component of multimodal therapy to provide adequate analgesia due to rib fractures in geriatric patients.

Resumo Os parâmetros de qualidade da água de um viveiro de peixes são essenciais para um manejo adequado e sob controle para operações bem-sucedidas de piscicultura. O manejo inadequado da qualidade da água do tanque durante os estágios juvenis pode criar condições estressantes para a produção de várias doenças nocivas, o que pode diminuir a qualidade do peixe e resultar em baixos lucros. O presente estudo teve como objetivo monitorar importantes parâmetros de qualidade da água de viveiros de cultivo de Labeo rohita em incubadora de peixes Bannu. A duração do estudo foi de 75 dias, estendendo-se de 10 de junho a 24 de agosto de 2019 para o sucesso do cultivo dessa espécie que pode desempenhar papel significativo na época de reprodução. Além disso, a concentração de alguns metais pesados como cobre (Cu), níquel (Ni), manganês (Mn), ferro (Fe), cádmio (Cd) e zinco (Zn) na água do tanque e estágios de fritura dessa espécie também foram determinados. Os dados obtidos de todos os parâmetros de qualidade da água foram analisados expressos como faixa, média e desvio padrão usando o MS Excel 2013. Os resultados obtidos de 75 dias de estudo revelaram que o pH e temperatura da água, condutividade elétrica, sólidos totais dissolvidos (TDS) e total de oxigênio dissolvido (OD) das amostras de água do lago foram encontrados dentro de um limite tolerável, exceto salinidade e concentração de amônia dissolvida não eram permitidas para o crescimento dos peixes. A concentração média de metais pesados na água da lagoa apresentou ordem decrescente Fe > Ni > Mn > Zn > Cd > Ni, que foi encontrada em faixas aceitáveis. Já os valores médios dos metais pesados nos estágios de fritura foram da ordem de Zn > Fe > Ni > Cu > Cd > Mn, e encontrados dentro dos valores recomendados pela OMS/FAO. Assim, concluiu-se deste estudo que a boa qualidade da água é uma condição prévia, manter níveis equilibrados dos parâmetros de qualidade da água é fundamental para a saúde e crescimento da piscicultura, o que é bastante necessário para garantir o aumento da produtividade piscícola. Recomendam-se monitorar e avaliar os parâmetros de qualidade da água em uma base rotineira para promover a piscicultura saudável.

Abstract The water quality parameters of a fish pond are essential to be managing properly under control for successful operations of fish culture. Improper management of pond water quality during the juvenile stages can create stressful conditions to produce various harmful diseases, which may decrease the fish quality and results in low profits. The present study was aimed to monitored important water quality parameters of nursery ponds of Labeo rohita culturing in Bannu fish hatchery. The study duration was 75 days extends from 10th June to 24th August 2019 for the successful culture of this specie which can play a significant role in breeding season. Furthermore, the concentration of some heavy metals like copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cadmium (Cd), and zinc (Zn) in pond water and fry stages of this species was also determined. The data obtained from all water quality parameters were analyzed expressed as range, mean and standard deviation using MS Excel 2013. The obtained results of 75 days study revealed that the water pH & temperature, electric conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and total dissolved oxygen (DO) of pond water samples were found within a tolerable limit except salinity and dissolved ammonia concentration were not permissible for fish growth. The average concentration of heavy metals in pond water exhibited descending order Fe>Ni>Mn>Zn>Cd>Ni, which was found in acceptable ranges. Whereas, the average values of heavy metals in fry stages were in the order of Zn>Fe>Ni>Cu>Cd>Mn, and found within the recommended values of WHO/FAO. Thus, it was concluded from this study that good water quality is a precondition, maintaining balanced levels of water quality parameters is fundamental for both the health and growth of fish culture which is quite necessary for assuring increased fish productivity. It is recommended to monitor and assess water quality parameters on a routine basis for promoting healthy fish culture.

RESUMO: O foco deste estudo é investigar o impacto do agroecossistema na pegada ecológica no Paquistão, usando os dados de séries temporais no período de 1990 a 2019. Os métodos econométricos de séries temporais foram empregados para investigar a associação de longo prazo entre um agroecossistema e a pegada ecológica. Após a realização dos testes de estacionaridade, a abordagem de Johansen foi empregada. Os resultados do método de Johansen implicam que existe cointegração de longo prazo entre as variáveis exógenas e endógenas. Além disso, o modelo ARDL foi realizado e os resultados de longo prazo foram validados pela abordagem de teste vinculado. A elasticidade da forma de curto prazo do modelo ARDL revela que terras agrícolas, emprego, consumo de energia, uso de fertilizantes e biomassa queimada na agricultura têm uma relação positiva com o agroecossistema. Em contraste, na forma log-run das terras agrícolas ARDL, o emprego, o consumo de energia, o uso de fertilizantes na agricultura e a temperatura têm um impacto positivo na pegada ecológica. Os resultados da função impulso resposta revelam que o emprego e o uso de fertilizantes na agricultura são positivos enquanto o consumo de energia e a pecuária em número têm uma influência negativa na pegada ecológica. Assim, práticas rigorosas de agricultura para maior produção colocam uma pressão extra sobre o agroecossistema. Como resultado, a estabilidade do agroecossistema se deteriora e reduz. Para minimizar o ecossistema ecológico, é necessária tecnologia moderna para reduzir a emissão de carbono, aumentar a produção mais verde e melhorar a biocapacidade da terra no país. Este estudo ajudaria o pesquisador, planejador, formulador de políticas e acadêmicos a ter uma orientação e visão adequadas para fornecer alimentos e meio ambiente sustentáveis.

ABSTRACT: The focus of this research study investigated the impact of agroecosystem on the ecological footprint in Pakistan, using the time series data over the period from 1990 to 2019. The econometric methods of time series were employed to investigate the long-term association between an agroecosystem and ecological footprint. After performing the stationarity tests Johansen approach was employed. Results of the Johansen method imply that long-term co-integration exists between the exogenous and endogenous variables. Moreover, the ARDL model was performed and long-run results were validated by the bound testing approach. The elasticity of the short-run form of the ARDL model reveals that agricultural land, employment, energy consumption, fertilizer use, and biomass burned dry matter in agriculture have a positive relationship with the agroecosystem. In contrast in the log-run form of ARDL agricultural land, employment, energy consumption, fertilizer use in agriculture and temperature have a positive impact on ecological footprint. Results of the impulse response function revealed that employment and fertilizer use in agriculture have positive while energy consumption and livestock in number have a negative influence on the ecological footprint. Thus, rigorous practices of agriculture for higher production put extra pressure on the agroecosystem. As a result, the stability of the agroecosystem deteriorates and reduces. To minimize the ecological ecosystem, modern technology is required to reduce carbon emission, enhance greener production and improve the biocapacity of the land in the country. This study would help the researcher, planner, policymaker and academicians to provide a proper guideline and vision to provide sustainable food and environment.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar os compostos bioativos das folhas de Conocarpus lancifolius (C. lancifolius). A análise por GC-MS do extrato metanólico quente das folhas (HMEL) de C. lancifolius exibiu os compostos bioativos como 1- (3-Metoxi-2-nitrobenzil) isoquinolina, morfina-4-ol-6,7- diona, 1-bromo-N-metil-, fitol, ácido hexadecanoico, 2,3-di-hidroxipropil éster, 2,2 ': 4', 2 ” - tertiofeno, isoalocolato de etil, óxido de cariofileno, campesterol, epiglobulol, colestano -3-ol, 2-metileno-, (3á, 5à) -, dasycarpidan-1-metanol, acetato (éster) e ácido oleico, éster eicosílico. A análise FT-IR de HMEL de C. lancifolius mostrou um pico único em 3184, 2413, 1657 cm-1 representando ácido cumarico, ácido clorogênico e ácido ferúlico. O HMEL de C. lancifolius inibiu ativamente a proliferação de células de câncer de mama MCF-7 ATCC na concentração de 72,66 ± 8,21 µg / ml como valor de IC50. O HMEL de C. lancifolius também revelou bom espectro de atividade contra culturas de bactérias Gram-positivas e Gram-negativas rastreadas neste trabalho. A atividade observada mostrou efeitos mais ou menos semelhantes contra bactérias rastreadas. No entanto, a magnitude da potencialidade foi significativamente menor em comparação com o disco de ciprofloxacina padrão em nível de p < 0,001 (intervalos de confiança de 99%). Além disso, o estudo demonstrando os compostos bioativos pode ser isolado das folhas de C. lancifolius.

Abstract The objective of the present study was to analyse the bioactive compounds of the leaves of Conocarpus lancifolius (C. lancifolius). The GC-MS analysis of the hot methanolic extract of the leaves (HMEL) of C. lancifolius exhibited the bioactive compounds such as 1-(3-Methoxy-2-nitrobenzyl) iso quinoline, morphin-4-ol-6,7-dione, 1-bromo-N-methyl-, phytol, hexadecanoic acid, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester, 2,2':4',2”-terthiophene, ethyl iso-allocholate, caryophyllene oxide, campesterol, epiglobulol, cholestan-3-ol, 2-methylene-, (3á,5à)-, dasycarpidan-1-methanol, acetate (ester) and oleic acid, eicosyl ester. The FT-IR analysis of HMEL of C. lancifolius showed a unique peak at 3184, 2413, 1657 cm-1 representing coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid. The HMEL of C. lancifolius was actively inhibiting the proliferation of breast cancer cells MCF-7 ATCC at the concentration of 72.66 ± 8.21 µg/ml as IC50 value. The HMEL of C. lancifolius also revealed a good spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial cultures screened in this work. The activity observed has shown more or less similar effects against screened bacteria. However, the magnitude of potentiality was significantly lesser compared to standard ciprofloxacin disc at p< 0.001 level (99% confidence intervals). Furthermore, the study demonstrating the bioactive compounds can be isolated from the leaves of C. lancifolius.

Resumen Una investigación relevante y no reportada previamente respecto a la influencia del carbón activado (CA) apoya que la biomasa de Eucalyptus Lanceolata es un adsorbente. El reciente trabajo sintetizó una serie de estudios para conocer diversos parámetros experimentales de tiempo de equilibrio y temperatura del adsorbente para la eliminación del colorante. La caracterización de la estructura física determinó que el aumento del área superficial del carbón activado de 399 a 475 m2.g-1 revela que la biomasa cruda tenía una superficie más compacta que las del carbón activado. Se encontraron bandas FTIR en la región entre 3406.29 cm-1 y 3414.0 cm-1 indicando el estiramiento del grupo (-OH) que conduce al enlace de hidrógeno. Se estudió la adsorción de azul de metileno en carbón crudo y activado. La energía de activación media del carbón activado fue de 33,67 kJ.mol-1, ligeramente inferior a la del carbón bruto, que fue de 49,14 kJ.mol-1. Se aplicaron modelos de difusión intrapartícula, Elovich y Bhangam para evaluar estudios cinéticos a 20, 30 y 40 ºC. Los parámetros termodinámicos, ΔH≠, ΔS≠ y ΔE≠ se calcularon a partir de la cinética de adsorción. Los resultados indican que la adsorción es un proceso espontáneo. El valor negativo de la entropía determinó que las moléculas de ácido toman una posición orientada en la superficie del adsorbente. Los resultados muestran que todos los modelos se ajustaron mejor para la adsorción.

Abstract Investigation relevant to the influence of activated carbon (AC) supports biomass of Eucalyptus Lanceolata as an adsorbent was not reported previously. The recent work synthesized a series of studies to know various experimental parameters equilibration time and temperature of the adsorbent for the elimination of dye. Physical structure characterization measured that the surface area of activated carbon increased from 399 to 475 m2.g-1 revealed that the raw biomass had more compact surface than those of activated carbon. FTIR bands were found in the region between 3406.29 cm-1 and 3414.0 cm -1 indicates (-OH) stretching group which leads to hydrogen bonding. Adsorption of Methylene blue was studied on raw and activated carbon. The average activation energy of the activated carbon was 33.67 kJ.mol-1, slightly lower than those of raw carbon, which was 49.14 kJ.mol-1. Intraparticle diffusion, Elovich and Bhangam models were applied to evaluate kinetics studies at 20, 30 and 40 ºC. Thermodynamic parameters, ΔH ≠, ΔS≠ and ΔE≠ were calculated from the adsorption of kinetics. Results indicate that adsorption is a spontaneous process. The negative value of entropy determined that the acid molecules take an oriented position on the surface of the adsorbent. The results show that all the models were best fitted for adsorption.

RESUMO Objetivo: Examinar o efeito de infiltrados sub-epiteliais corneanos nas propriedades biomecânicas da córnea após ceratoconjuntivite epidêmica, em comparação com controles saudáveis. Métodos: Este estudo transversal incluiu pacientes consecutivos com infiltrados sub-epiteliais corneanos bilaterais após ceratoconjuntivite epidêmica e controles saudáveis. Foram medidas a melhor acuidade visual corrigida, uma pontuação do infiltrado sub-epitelial da córnea, a escala de graduação de Fantes e a espessura central da córnea. A histerese da córnea, o fator de resistência da córnea, a pressão intraocular correlacionada à tonometria de Goldmann e a pressão intraocular compensada da córnea foram avaliados com o Ocular Response Analyzer. Resultados: Este estudo incluiu 66 olhos de 33 pacientes com infiltrados corneanos sub-epiteliais após ceratoconjuntivite epidêmica e selecionou aleatoriamente 37 olhos de 37 voluntários saudáveis. As pontuações médias da escala de Fantes e dos infiltrados sub-epiteliais corneanos nos primeiros olhos acometidos foram respectivamente de 1,8 ± 0,8 e 2,9 ± 1,3. Nos olhos contralaterais, foram respectivamente de 1,3 ± 1,1 e 1,9 ± 1,7 (p=0,009 e p=0,002, respectivamente). O primeiro e o segundo olhos envolvidos tinham córneas significativamente mais finas (respectivamente 526,1 ± 28,1 µm; p=0,005 e 523,4 ± 38,1 µm; p=0,044) em comparação com os controles saudáveis (557,0 ± 38,1 µm). Embora a acuidade visual melhor corrigida tenha mostrado uma correlação positiva com o fator de resistência da córnea (r=0,363, p=0,045) e com a histerese da córnea (r=0,414, p=0,021), a pontuação dos infiltrados sub-epiteliais corneanos mostrou uma correlação negativa com a pressão intraocular correlacionada à tonometria de Goldmann (r=-0,479, p=0,006) e com a pressão intraocular compensada da córnea (r=-0,413, p=0,021). Conclusão: Os olhos com infiltrados corneanos sub-epiteliais tinham córneas significativamente mais finas em comparação com os controles saudáveis. Ao se medirem os valores de pressão intraocular em pacientes com infiltrados sub-epiteliais corneanos, deve-se levar em consideração tanto as correlações positivas do fator de resistência da córnea e da histerese da córnea com a melhor acuidade visual corrigida quanto as correlações negativas da pressão intraocular correlacionada à tonometria de Goldmann e da pressão intraocular compensada da córnea com a pontuação do infiltrado sub-epitelial da córnea.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To examine the effect of subepithelial corneal infiltrates on corneal biomechanical properties after epidemic keratoconjunctivitis compared to that in healthy controls. Methods: The cross-sectional study included consecutive patients with bilateral subepithelial corneal infiltrates after epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and healthy controls. Best corrected visual acuity corneal subepithelial infiltrate scoring Fantes grading scale, and central corneal thickness were measured. Corneal hysteresis corneal resistance factor Goldmann correlated intraocular pressure and corneal compensated intraocular pressure were assessed using an ocular response analyzer. Results: This study included 66 eyes of 33 patients with subepithelial corneal infiltrates following epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and randomly selected 37 eyes of 37 healthy volunteers. The mean Fantes and CSIS scores were 1.8 ± 0.8 and 2.9 ± 1.3, respectively, in the first involved eyes and 1.3 ± 1.1 and 1.9 ± 1.7, respectively, in the fellow eyes (p=0.009 and p=0.002, respectively). The first (526.1 ± 28.1 µm; p=0.005) and second involved eyes (523.4 ± 38.1 µm; p=0.044) had significantly thinner corneas compared to that in healthy controls (557.0 ± 38.1 µm). While best-corrected visual acuity showed a positive correlation with corneal resistance factor (r=0.363, p=0.045) and corneal hysteresis (r=0.414, p=0.021), corneal subepithelial infiltrate scoring showed a negative correlation with Goldmann correlated intraocular pressure (r=-0.479, p=0.006) and corneal compensated intraocular pressure (r=-0.413, p=0.021). Conclusion: Eyes with subepithelial corneal infiltrates had significantly thinner corneas compared to that in healthy controls. A positive correlation of the corneal resistance factor and corneal hysteresis with best-corrected visual acuity and a negative correlation of the Goldmann correlated intraocular pressure and corneal compensated intraocular pressure with corneal subepithelial infiltrate scoring should be taken into account when measuring intraocular pressure values in patients with subepithelial corneal infiltrates.

Abstract Background: This study aimed to measure the levels of anxiety and burnout among healthcare workers, including attending physicians, residents, and nurses in intensive care units during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: This is a cross-sectional survey analysis of healthcare workers in our institution. Data were collected on demographic variables, COVID-19 symptoms and test, disease status, anxiety level (assessed by the Beck Anxiety Inventory), and burnout level (measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory). Subscales of the burnout inventory were evaluated separately. Results: A total of 104 participants completed the survey. Attending physicians, residents, and nurses constituted 25%, 33.7%, and 41.3% of the cohort, respectively. In comparison to untested participants, those tested for COVID-19 had a lower mean age (p = 0.02), higher emotional exhaustion and depersonalization scores (p = 0.001, 0.004, respectively), and lower personal accomplishment scores (p = 0.004). Furthermore, moderate to severe anxiety was observed more frequently in tested participants than untested ones (p = 0.022). Moderate or severe anxiety was seen in 23.1% of the attending physicians, 54.3% of the residents, and 48.8% of the nurses (p = 0.038). Emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization scores differed depending on the position of the healthcare workers (p = 0.034, 0.001, 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: This study revealed higher levels of anxiety and burnout in younger healthcare workers and those tested for COVID-19, which mainly included residents and nurses. The reasons for these observations should be further investigated to protect their mental health.

Resumo Objetivo Avaliar se há ou não efeito do médico que realiza a transferência de embriões nas taxas de gravidez no tratamento com fertilização in vitro-injeção intracitoplasmática de espermatozoide (FIV-ICSI, na sigla em inglês). Métodos Um total de 757 participantes foram analisados entre 2012 e 2017. Os participantes foram classificados de acordo com 3 médicos que transferiram os embriões: ([grupo 1=164 pacientes]; [grupo 2=233 pacientes]; [grupo 3=360 pacientes]). Parâmetros basais e resultados de FIV-ICSI foram comparados entre os grupos. Resultados Nenhuma diferença foi determinada entre os grupos nos parâmetros basais (idade, subgrupos de idade [20-29, 30-39 e ≥ 40 anos)], índice de massa corporal (IMC), tabagismo, período de infertilidade, causa da infertilidade, hormônio folículo estimulante basal , hormônio luteinizante, estradiol (E2), hormônio estimulador da tireoide, níveis de prolactina, contagem de folículos antrais, duração da estimulação, protocolo de estimulação, dose de gonadotrofina necessária, níveis máximos de E2, níveis de progesterona e espessura endometrial na administração de hCG e nos dias de transferência (p>0,05). O número de oócitos recuperados, MII e 2PN, embrião transferido, taxa de fertilização, dia da transferência do embrião, o efeito do cateter e a técnica de transferência de embrião e taxas clínicas de gravidez (RCPs) também foram comparáveis entre os grupos (p>0,05). Conclusão Nossos dados sugerem que o médico que transfere os embriões não tem impacto sobre as RCPs em pacientes que se submeteram a FIV-ICSI, mas mais estudos com mais participantes são necessários para elucidar esta situação.

Abstract Objective To evaluate whether there is an effect of the physician who transfers the embryos on pregnancy rates in in vitro fertilization-intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI) treatment. Methods A total of 757 participants were analyzed between 2012 and 2017. Participants were classified according to 3 physicians who transferred the embryos: ([group 1=164 patients]; [group 2=233 patients]; [group 3=360 patients]). Baseline parameters and IVF-ICSI outcomes were compared between the groups. Results No differences were determined between the groups regarding the baseline parameters (age, age subgroups [20-29, 30-39, and ≥ 40 years old)], body mass index (BMI), smoking status, infertility period, cause of infertility, baseline follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol (E2), thyroid stimulating hormone, prolactin levels, antral follicle count, duration of stimulation, stimulation protocol, gonadotropin dose required, maximum E2 levels, progesterone levels, endometrial thickness on human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration and transfer days (p>0.05). The numbers of oocytes retrieved,metaphase II (MII), 2 pronucleus (2PN), transferred embryo, fertilization rate, day ofembryo transfer, the catheter effect and embryo transfer technique, and clinical pregnancy rates (CPRs) were also comparable between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion Our data suggests that the physician who transfers the embryos has no impact on CPRs in patients who have undergone IVF-ICSI, but further studies with more participants are required to elucidate this situation.

Resumen En este artículo introducimos un operador que puede ser pensado como una derivada de orden variable, i.e. el orden de la derivada es una función. Demostramos varias propiedades de este operador, por ejemplo, obtenemos una fórmula generalizada de Leibniz, teoremas de valor medio de Rolle y Cauchy y un polinomio de tipo Taylor. Más aún, obtenemos su operador inverso. También con esta derivada analizamos la existencia de soluciones de un problema no lineal de valor en la frontera de tres puntos de “orden variable”.

Abstract In this paper we introduce an operator that can be thought as a derivative of variable order, i.e. the order of the derivative is a function. We prove several properties of this operator, for instance, we obtain a generalized Leibniz’s formula, Rolle and Cauchy’s mean theorems and a Taylor type polynomial. Moreover, we obtain its inverse operator. Also, with this derivative we analyze the existence of solutions of a nonlinear three-point boundary value problem of “variable order”.

Resumo O estudo investigou o efeito cicatrizante da formulação de óleo medicinal (MO) preparado a partir do extrato de folhas de Murraya koenigii (metanol) incorporado ao azeite de oliva. O MO era visualmente transparente, homogêneo, de textura lisa, o grau de viscosidade observado foi de 140 cP e facilmente espalhável. As citocinas pró-inflamatórias IL-1β, IL-6 e TNF-α foram significativamente reduzidas para 82,3 ± 3,5, 156 ± 6,2, 137,3. ± 5,5 pg/ml, respectivamente, após o tratamento com MO quando comparados aos animais controle da doença que apresentaram níveis de IL-1β, IL-6 e TNF-α de 170 ± 6, 265 ± 7 e 288,6 ± 11, pg/ml, respectivamente . O nível de citocina pró-inflamatória no grupo solução de iodopovidona (PIS) foi de 95,3 ± 3, 162 ± 6, 177,6 ± 8,9 pg/ml de IL-1β, IL-6 e TNF-α, respectivamente. Curiosamente, a eficácia de cicatrização de feridas de MO foi encontrada melhor em comparação com o grupo padrão tratado com iodopovidona e concluiu que a preparação de MO tem efeito de cicatrização de feridas.

Abstract The study investigated the wound healing effect of medicinal oil (MO) formulation prepared from Murraya koenigii leaves extract (methanolic) incorporated in olive oil. The MO was visually transparent, homogenous, smooth in texture, the viscosity grade was observed as 140 cP and easily spreadable. Pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were significantly reduced to 82.3 ± 3.5, 156 ± 6.2, 137.3. ± 5.5 pg/ml, respectively after treatment with MO when compared to disease control animals that showed IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α levels of 170 ± 6, 265 ± 7, and 288.6 ± 11, pg/ml respectively. The level of pro-inflammatory cytokine in povidone iodine solution (PIS) group was 95.3 ± 3, 162 ± 6, 177.6 ± 8.9 pg/ml of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α respectively. Interestingly, the wound-healing efficacy of MO was found better as compared to povidone iodine treated standard group and concluded that MO has excellent wound healing effect.

Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a qualidade da água de Zamzam, água benta para os muçulmanos e consumida pelo seu valor medicinal. O presente estudo demonstra a caracterização físico-química e a propriedade cicatrizante da água de Zamzam. A caracterização físico-química das amostras de água de Zamzam foi analisada para oxigênio dissolvido, pH, condutividade, sólidos totais dissolvidos, potencial redox, potencial zeta, índice de polidispersidade e tamanho zeta. A qualidade microbiana da água de Zamzam também foi avaliada expondo amostras de água ao ar livre. Neste trabalho, a água de Zamzam também foi avaliada quanto ao valor medicinal através de propriedades cicatrizantes em ratos Wistar. A água de Zamzam exibiu uma caracterização físico-química única com altos níveis de oxigênio dissolvido, potencial zeta, índice de polidispersidade, potencial redox, sólidos totais dissolvidos e condutividade antes da exposição ao ar livre. Após a exposição ao ar livre, a água de Zamzam resistiu ao crescimento de bactérias. As propriedades de cicatrização de feridas da água de Zamzam in vivo mostraram um efeito de cicatrização de 96% no 12º dia de observação. A cicatrização da ferida foi alcançada pela modulação de citocinas pró-inflamatórias como a interleucina-1β (IL-1β), interleucina-6 (IL-6) e fator de necrose tumoral -α (TNF-α). Seguido pelo nível de marcadores de apoptose caspase-9 e caspase-3, estes foram reduzidos. O presente estudo provou que a água de Zamzam é uma água de melhor qualidade e mostrou excelente propriedade de cicatrização de feridas. Portanto, a água de Zamzam pode ser usada para formulações farmacêuticas.

Abstract The objective of the study was to evaluate the quality of Zamzam water, holy water for Muslims and consumed for its medicinal value. The present study demonstrates the physicochemical characterization and wound healing property of Zamzam water. The physicochemical characterization of Zamzam water samples was analyzed for dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, redox potential, zeta potential, polydispersity index, and zeta size. The microbial quality of Zamzam water was also assessed by exposing water samples to open air. In this work, Zamzam water was also screened for the medicinal value through wound healing properties in Wistar rats. Zamzam water exhibited a unique physicochemical characterization with high levels of dissolved oxygen, zeta potential, polydispersity index, redox potential, total dissolved solids, and conductivity before exposure to open air. After open air exposure, Zamzam water resisted the growth of bacteria. The wound healing properties of Zamzam water in vivo showed a 96% of healing effect on 12th day observation. The wound healing was achieved by modulating pro-inflammatory cytokine such as interleukin -1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor -α (TNF-α). Followed by the level of apoptosis markers caspase-9 and caspase-3 were reduced. The present study proved that Zamzam water is a good-quality water and showed excellent wound healing property. Therefore, Zamzam water can be used for pharmaceutical formulations.

Abstract Quality is paramount and needs to be maintained throughout the shelf life of pharmaceuticals. The current study aimed to evaluate the quality, potency, and drug-drug interaction in an in vivo animal model by using two drugs, namely, metoprolol and glimepiride. Tablets were selected for their physical characteristics, such as shape, size, and color. Quality control tests, such as weight variation, hardness, friability, and disintegration tests, and invitro drug release studies were performed as per USP. Drug-drug interaction and in vivo studies were carried out according to the standard protocol of the animal ethics committee. Quality control tests of both the tablets were within the specified range. The cumulative release percentages of the drugs were 81.12% and 85.36% for Metoprolol Tartrate and Glimepiride, respectively, in a physiological buffer solution within 1 h. The combination of metoprolol and Glimepiride also significantly decreased the blood glucose level in diabetic animals. However, the blood glucose level increased in the group receiving metoprolol only, but the difference was not significant. The result suggested that the formulations are safe. However, the chronic use of this combination requires frequent monitoring of blood glucose level to improve its efficacy and for the patient’s safety.
