Abstract The objectives of the study were to (1) describe the kinematic parameters of spermatozoa (2) compare methods of evaluating sperm viability (3) validate assays of functionality and integrity of the sperm membrane and (4) evaluate possible changes between spermatozoa from the epididymis and the vas deferens of the greater rhea. Semen samples were recovered from 7 adult individuals. Sperm motility was characterized by adjusting the set-up for Computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) to that new species. For sperm viability evaluation, smears of bromophenol blue and eosin-nigrosine dyes were used. Five solutions of different osmolarities were then tested for the hypoosmotic swelling test (HOST). The combination of fluorescent probes (propidium iodide - IP and Hoechst 33342) was also used to assess plasma membrane integrity. Data were presented as mean ± SEM. Rhea spermatozoa from the vas deferens had an overall motility of 14.6 ± 2.5%. The bromophenol blue staining technique revealed that 64.6 ± 5.2% sperm were viable, while that proportion was 72.1 ± 2.5% using eosin-nigrosine. An average of 77.6 ± 4.8% of spermatozoa reacted to the HOST with distilled water at 0 mOsm/l. Fluorescent probes indicated that 65.3 ± 2.6% of spermatozoa had intact membranes. Interestingly, no statistical differences were observed between the parameters analyzed in the epididymal spermatozoa and the vas deferens. These new assays set reference values that can now be used to further exploration of sperm handling conditions and freezing protocols in rheas.

ABSTRACT Clinical similarities among viral diseases become even more relevant considering the current scenario, especially in Brazil, where there is a high incidence of these diseases and overlapping seasonality. We report the case of a patient with acute clinical manifestations composed of predominant respiratory symptoms and alveolar hemorrhage in which three etiologies (dengue, influenza and COVID-19) were investigated concomitantly. Only the diagnosis of dengue was confirmed. Then, the patient’s immunological profile in response to stimulation of mononuclear cells with dengue virus antigen was analyzed in an attempt to identify specific characteristics that could be associated with the clinical manifestation.

RESUMO: O isolado E9 de Metarhizium anisopliae foi usado em larvas híbridas de Bombyx mori para avaliar seu efeito biológico. A sintomatologia revelou sinais típicos de infecção por fungos. Na histopatologia foi verificado um aumento no número de hemócitos, sendo que, no 6 dpi, todo o corpo do inseto se apresentou colonizado pelo fungo. O isolado E9 é patogênico para lagartas de B. mori, causando sua morte pela colonização dos tecidos de origem epidérmica e mesodérmica.

ABSTRACT: The isolate E9 of Metarhizium anisopliae was used in commercial hybrids of Bombyx mori larvae to evaluate its biological effect. Symptomatological analyses showed typical signs of fungal infection. Histopathology revealed the presence of large numbers of hemocytes in the hemocoel, and on the sixth dpi the bodies of the insects appeared to be colonised by the fungus. The isolate E9 is pathogenic to larvae B. mori and; therefore, death of the insects was caused by the colonization of fungus in the epidermal and mesodermal tissues.

OBJETIVO:identificar e analisar as dimensões de significação (ou universos semânticos) que organizam as ideias, emoções e imagens em relação à terapia da fala nos profissionais e não profissionais de saúde.MÉTODOS:estudo qualitativo e quantitativo de metodologia transversal, constituído por uma amostra de 166 indivíduos de ambos os sexos, 40 (24.1%) terapeutas da fala, 39 (23,5%) outros profissionais de saúde e 87 (52,4%) não profissionais de saúde. (M=36anos;Rangeidade=18-75anos).Utilizou-se uma escala analógica visual, um questionário sociodemográfico e um guião de entrevista estruturada, baseada na técnica de evocação livre, ordem de evocação e axioma de importância. A análise dos dados qualitativos foi feita com recurso à Teoria das Representações Sociais, aliada à Teoria do Núcleo Central e a análise dos dados quantitativos com recurso a uma Base de dados no Microsoft Excel, Software SPSS19.0 para o Windows: análise dos perfis por meio de frequências simples, médias e desvio padrão e organização das estruturas analisadas pela técnica do quadro de quatro casas.RESULTADOS:obteve-se para o termo indutor terapia da fala 830 evocações que após homogeneização e análise dos termos evocados, reproduziu 495 unidades de registro, e um sistema representacional de 13 categorias. O núcleo central da representação está centrado na comunicação, qualificação, bem-estar, diagnóstico e tratamento da pessoa com doença.CONCLUSÃO:a comunicação foi a cognição semântica mais consensual sobre a representação social da terapia da fala entre os profissionais.

PURPOSE:to identify and analyse the dimensions of significance (or semantic universes) that organise the ideas, emotions and images of health and non health professionals in relation to speech therapy.METHODS:a qualitative and quantitative study of crossover design, using a sample of 166 individuals of both sexes: 40 (24.1%), speech therapists, 39 (23.5%), other health professionals and 87 (52.4) non-health professionals. (M= 36 years; ageRange =18-75 years). We used a visual analogue scale, a socio-demographic questionnaire and a structured interview script, based on free recall technique, order of recall and axiom of importance. The Theory of Social Representations and Central Nucleus Theory were used for the qualitative data analysis; the quantitative data analysis employed a Microsoft Excel database, SPSS 19.0 software for Windows: profile analysis using simple frequencies, averages and standard deviations, and organisation structures analysed by the four-house framework technique.RESULTS:830 recalls were obtained by the cue "speech therapy", which reproduced 495 registry units after the homogenisation and analysis of the terms recalled, and a 13-category representational system. The core representation is centred on communication skills, well-being, diagnosis and treatment of people with disease.CONCLUSION:communication was the most consensual semantic cognition for the social representation of speech therapy among professionals.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a estabilidade oxidativa do farelo integral de arroz parboilizado (FIAP) durante o armazenamento e os efeitos do seu uso na alimentação de codornas de corte. Foram utilizados 245 animais com sete dias de idade, de ambos os sexos, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos, em arranjo fatorial 2x2+1, e sete repetições de sete aves. Avaliaram-se os seguintes tratamentos: dieta controle, sem adição de FIAP; e níveis de inclusão, na dieta controle, de 10 e 20% de FIAP armazenado por 180 dias (FIAPA) ou de FIAP novo (FIAPN). Houve oxidação lipídica do FIAP durante o armazenamento, e o índice de acidez foi de 4,25 e 63,50 (% em ácido oleico) e o de peróxido foi de 15,64 e 38,28 meq kg-1 para FIAPN e FIAPA, respectivamente. A inclusão do FIAP resultou em menor digestibilidade da matéria seca e do nitrogênio e em maior valor de energia metabolizável da ração, em comparação à ração controle. A inclusão de 20% de FIAPA resultou em menor energia metabolizável da ração do que a adição do FIAPN. As inclusões não influenciaram desempenho, características da carcaça, pesos relativos do fígado e do pâncreas, e crescimento e qualidade óssea. O FIAPA, mesmo com rancidez, pode ser utilizado na alimentação de codornas de corte em níveis de até 20% de inclusão.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the oxidative stability of parboiled rice bran (PRB) during storage and the effects of its use on meat quail feeding. Two hundred forty-five animals, with seven days of age, of both sexes, were used, distributed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments in a 2x2+1 factorial arrangement and seven replicates of seven chicks. The following treatments were evaluated: control diet, without PRB; and inclusion levels of 10 and 20% of 180-day-storaged PRB (SPRB) or of new PRB (NPRB) in the control diet. There was lipid oxidation of PRB during storage, the acid index was 4.25 and 63.50 (% as oleic acid) and the peroxide index was 15.64 and 38.28 meq kg-1 for NPRB and SPRB, respectively. The inclusion of PRB resulted in lower dry matter and nitrogen digestibility and in higher metabolizable energy value of feed when compared to the control diet. The inclusion of 20% SPRB resulted in lower metabolizable energy of feed than the addition of NPRB. The inclusions did not influence performance, carcass traits, relative weights of the liver and pancreas, and bone growth and quality. The SPRB, although rancid, can be used as feed for meat quail at levels up to 20% inclusion.

CONTEXTO: A depressão é um importante problema de saúde global e vem causando impacto negativo na vida dos indivíduos e na de suas famílias, além de elevar a demanda dos serviços de saúde. OBJETIVO: Verificar a prevalência de depressão e de fatores associados em indivíduos com idade superior a 14 anos que buscaram atendimento na atenção primária. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal em três Unidades Básicas de Saúde vinculadas à Universidade Católica de Pelotas. A depressão, os transtornos de ansiedade e o risco de suicídio foram avaliados por meio da Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), enquanto os fatores associados, como idade, gênero, vive ou não com o/a companheiro/a, escolaridade e uso de substâncias psicoativas, foram avaliados por meio de questionário sociodemográfico. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de depressão foi de 23,9% (n = 256), apresentando-se mais evidente nas mulheres, com 4 a 7 anos de escolaridade, de classe socioeconômica D ou E, que abusam ou são dependentes de álcool, com algum transtorno de ansiedade e com risco de suicídio (p < 0,050). CONCLUSÃO: Diante de tais resultados, salientamos a inserção de cuidados em saúde mental por meio de avaliações diagnósticas e de protocolos de atendimento que abarquem a depressão e suas comorbidades na atenção primária.

BACKGROUND: Depression, an important global health problem, negatively impacts the lives of individuals and their families beyond simply increasing the demand for health services. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of depression and associated mental health issues in individuals older than 14 years of age seeking primary care. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three primary care units involved with the Catholic University of Pelotas. Depression, anxiety disorders, and suicide risk were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Factors such as age, gender, solitary living, education, and psychoactive substance use were evaluated using a sociodemographic questionnaire. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of depression was 23.9% (n = 256). Depression was more prevalent in women with only 4-7 years of education, in women who belong to socioeconomic class D or E, in those who abuse or are dependent on alcohol, or in women who showed an anxiety disorder or suicide risk (p < 0.050). DISCUSSION: Based on these findings, we emphasize the integration of mental health care into primary care through diagnostic evaluations and treatment protocols that cover depression and its comorbidities.

Regiões como o Pantanal brasileiro, que apresentam fatores como riqueza de fauna silvestre incluindo circulação de aves migratórias e condições ambientais e climáticas favoráveis à proliferação de artrópodes estão potencialmente sujeitas à circulação de arbovírus. Entretanto, poucos trabalhos foram realizados acerca da presença de arbovírus em potenciais vetores no Pantanal. Neste sentido o principal objetivo deste trabalho foi conduzir uma investigação preliminar para presença de arbovírus em amostragens de culicídeos capturados na Sub-região da Nhecolândia no Pantanal Sul. Um total de 3684 mosquitos foi capturado, dos quais 78 grupos compondo uma amostragem de 1789 espécimes foram submetidos às técnicas de isolamento viral e RT-PCR para os mais importantes arbovírus no Brasil. Simultaneamente, 70 espécimes de carrapatos capturados durante hematofagia em cavalos também foram submetidos à pesquisa viral. Não houve isolamento viral em nenhuma amostra analisada e os resultados de detecção de ácido nucléico viral foram também negativos. Entretanto, foram identificadas 22 espécies de culicídeos, dez das quais previamente reportadas como vetores de importantes arbovírus. A competência vetorial de espécies capturadas durante hematofagia em humanos e cavalos aliada ao relato prévio de circulação de arbovírus sugerem a Sub-região da Nhecolândia como uma importante área de vigilância para arbovírus no Centro-Oeste do Brasil.

In view of the high circulation of migratory birds and the environmental and climatic conditions which favor the proliferation of arthropods, the Brazilian Pantanal is susceptible to circulation of arboviruses. However, the amount of data concerning arbovirus vectors in this area is scarce; therefore the aim of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of Culicidae species in the Nhecolândia Sub-region of South Pantanal, Brazil and their potential importance in the arbovirus transmission. A total of 3684 specimens of mosquitoes were captured, 1689 of which caught in the rainy season of 2007, were divided into 78 pools and submitted to viral isolation, Semi-Nested RT-PCR and Nested RT-PCR, with a view to identifying the most important arboviruses in Brazil. Simultaneously, 70 specimens of ticks found blood-feeding on horses were also submitted to the same virological assays. No virus was isolated and viral nucleic-acid detection by RT-PCR was also negative. Nevertheless, a total of 22 Culicidae species were identified, ten of which had previously been reported as vectors of important arboviruses. The diversity of species found blood-feeding on human and horse hosts together with the arboviruses circulation previously reported suggest that the Nhecolândia Sub-region of South Pantanal is an important area for arbovirus surveillance in Brazil.

This paper describes a complementary method for determining dielectric properties of granular materials using the Transmission/Reflection Method in order to estimate their moisture content. The Newton's Complex Interactive Method is used here as a numerical tool to calculate the complex permittivity of the plaster glue material. Results for samples with moisture contents of 35%, 40% and 45% in the range of 100 MHz to 3 GHz are presented.
