Abstract This study aimed to determine the antiulcerogenic and antioxidant activities of Psyllium (Plantago ovata Forssk) seed ethanolic extract in rats. We assessed the antioxidant potential using free radical scavenging on DPPH, β-carotene bleaching activity, ferric reducing power, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. In the antiulcerogenic study, pre-treatment with Plantago ovata seeds ethanolic extract (POE) (400 mg/kg b.wt) significantly protected against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in rats by decreasing the ulcer index value and preserving the integrity of the gastric mucosa. The oxidative stress status in the stomach tissues showed a significant increase in the antioxidant enzyme levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase with a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation during pre-treatment with POE. In conclusion, the POE protects against gastric ulcer due to its antioxidant potential and presence of bioactive molecules.

Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

ABSTRACT Water is an essential element to life and used in various human activities. However, because of the amount used in agriculture and the increase in irrigated area, the sustainable use of this resource has become a worldwide concern. In this study, data from the Censuses of Agriculture published by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) from 1960 to 2017 were evaluated in relation to the regions and irrigation methods, performing a detailed analysis between the data from the 2006 and 2017 Censuses. There was an increase in irrigated area in Brazil in all geographic regions, reaching 6.9 million hectares in 2017. Sprinkler irrigation methods are the most used, with 48% of the irrigated area, followed by localized irrigation (24.4%) and surface irrigation (22.3%). Drip irrigation is the most used system in establishments up to 50 ha (617,423 ha), followed by conventional sprinkler (514,893 ha), while the center pivot stands out in areas larger than 50 ha (1,362,828 ha). The Southeast region (38.6%) and the states of Rio Grande do Sul (20.4%), Minas Gerais (16.6%) and São Paulo (16.0%) stand out as the ones with the largest irrigated area in the country. The State of Minas Gerais showed the highest growth of irrigated area in the 2006-2017 period (116.1%), due to the expansion of areas irrigated with center pivot.

Abstract Even today, an effective diagnostic test for aspergillosis in penguins is unknown, being the gold standard post-mortem examinations. The fungal antigen galactomannan (GM) has been used as a biomarker of disease in humans and is detected by the Platelia Aspergillus EIA (BioRad)®, a commercial kit based on the sandwich ELISA technique. It is standardized for use in neutropenic patients, however studies have demonstrated its usefulness also possible for birds. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Platelia Aspergillus EIA® test (BioRad-US) in the diagnosis of aspergillosis in Magellanic penguins, determining sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for different cut-off points. Were included in the study, blood serum samples (n = 29) Magellanic penguins in captivity that died by aspergillosis. Detection of GM was performed following manufacturer's instructions and the GM index was obtained by dividing the average value of OD of the duplicate of the clinical sample by duplicate OD of the average value of the cut-off sample provided by the kit. Through information database results were obtained for the presence of anti-Aspergillus fumigatus antibodies detected by agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) for all serum samples. Results were analyzed using chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis from SPSS 20.0, IBM®. ROC curve was obtained and from this, rates of sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were also calculated based on four different cutoff points (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0). The serum GM index did not differ between animals of the case and control group (pkw =0.097). In determining the ROC curve for serum GM detection the value of area under the curve was 0.635. From the values determined by the coordinate of the curve, four different cut points (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) were analyzed, resulting in sensitivity rates ranging from 86.2 to 34.5% % and specificity between 87% and 26.1%. By comparing the serum GM index in group case as the presence or absence of antibodies detected by AGID was found p=0.503. The detection of GM the Platelia Aspergillus EIA® test seems is not be useful for the diagnosis of aspergillosis in naturally infected penguins.

Resumo Vernonanthura polyanthes (Spreng.) A.J. Vega & Dematt.
Abstract Vernonanthura polyanthes (Spreng.) A.J. Vega & Dematt. (Asteraceae), known as “assa-peixe”, has been used in ethnomedicine for the treatment of various diseases such as bronchitis, pneumonia, hemoptysis, persistent cough, internal abscesses, gastric and kidney stone pain. Moreover, some studies demonstrated that species of Genus Vernonia present antifungal activity. Due to the biological relevance of this species, the aim of this study was to investigate the toxic, genotoxic, antigenotoxic and antifungal potential of V. polyanthes leaves aqueous extract in somatic cells of Drosophila melanogaster or against Candida spp. The aqueous extract of the plant showed no toxic, genotoxic and antigenotoxic activity in the experimental conditions tested using the wing somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART/wing). However, when the extract was associated with doxorubicin, used in this work as a positive control, the mutagenic potential of doxorubicin was enhanced, increasing the number of mutations in D. melanogaster somatic cells. In the other hand, no inhibitory activity against Candida spp. was observed for V. polyanthes leaves aqueous extract using agar-well diffusion assay. More studies are necessary to reveal the components present in the V. polyanthes leaves aqueous extract that could contribute to potentiate the doxorubicin genotoxicity.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The Aveiro coastal lagoon is located on the NW coast of Portugal. It is the largest Portuguese lagoon system which is permanently open to the sea. It is centred within a sand coastal section about 150km long which has regular bathymetry, with bathymetric lines almost parallel along the coast. This regular pattern is only disturbed in the vicinity of the Aveiro Lagoon, which is connected to the ocean through a channel that provides shipping access to the port of Aveiro, located inside the lagoon. The NW waves generated in the North Atlantic, by predominant N and NW winds, prevail near the NW Portuguese coast during almost 80% of the year. In the channel connecting the lagoon to the ocean, and in contrast to most of the Portuguese coast, the currents induced by the tide are very strong. Sometimes they can reach about 4ms-1 at the entrance to the lagoon. Along the shoreline, off Aveiro bar, the currents are mainly southward during most of the year, with velocities about 0,5ms-1, and tide reaches of about 2,85m during spring tide, and 1,25m in neap tide conditions. The ocean near the lagoon is characterised by an intense transport of mainly non-cohesive sediments, southwards along the shoreline. Since the 1950’s the area has been subject to several interventions intended to improve shipping access to the port, including the construction of maritime protection structures. The main north breakwater at the entrance of the lagoon improved access by reducing sediment deposition in the navigation channel, but also interrupted the littoral drift, promoting sand deposition to the north of the north breakwater, and increasing erosion to the south of the entrance. After the northern zone became saturated, silting of the channel commenced. Several coastal protection works, along the coastline, have attempted to minimize this problem, including seawalls, groins, breakwaters, and dredging of the channel to guarantee the depths required for shipping. The present study evaluated the most suitable sites for the dredging of 1 000 000 m3 of sand from the channel or surrounding area, as well as the deposit of the dredged material to the south of the lagoon entrance, in order to: guarantee safety and operability of the port of Aveiro; avoid silting-up of the coastal zone adjacent to the port entrance; and minimise erosion of the coastal areas to the south. The study was performed in 2005, for the three authorities with jurisdiction over the coastal area of Aveiro Lagoon (IPTM - Institute of Ports and Maritime Transport; APA - Aveiro Port Administration and INAG - Portuguese Water Institute) and took into account the local hydrodynamic conditions and the characteristics and constraints of the project. It contributed significantly to coastal management in the area, since supports decision-making, conducting to the definition of an integrated solution for the situation referred to above. This paper describes the methodology used to define the possible sites for dredging and deposition of the sand, as well as the criteria used to select the preferred solution. Firstly, the available hydrographic information was analysed, in order to characterize the area and the bathymetric evolution of the sea bed. This information was then used to study the morphodynamic behaviour in the area, including estimating the sediment transport. Alternative sand dredging and deposition solutions were tested using a 2D hydrodynamic numerical model, including waves and tide propagation, currents induced by the waves and sedimentary transport. Finally, the preferred solution was chosen using multi-criteria analysis for a comparative analysis of seven dredging and deposition solutions, considering technical, environmental and economic criteria. The final solution consists of dredging of 1 000 000m3 of sand in the Aveiro bar entrance, between 9,0m and 12,5m depth, and the deposition of the dredged material in the sea to the south, in the submersed sector of the beach, between 2,0m and 5,0m depth, over an area between the third and fifth groins of Costa Nova. Finally, the study recommended the development of a regular monitoring programme to take place after the project implementation, in order to objectively evaluate sedimentary and bed evolution over the dredged and deposition areas (beach and bed evolution). The chosen solution was implemented by the competent authorities after 2008.

Flaxseed has a high content of n-3 fatty acids and its intake associated with an environmental enrichment may promote distinct behavioral results upon habituation and animal behavior. This work aimed to evaluating animal behavior under the use of these two tools in the Open Field Test. Thirty-six male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups (n = 6): FEEG, receiving chow made up of flaxseed and kept in enriched environment; FSEG, receiving flaxseed based diet and kept in a standard environment; CEEG, receiving casein based diet and kept in enriched environment; CSEG, receiving casein based chow and kept in standard environment; MCEEG, receiving chow made up of casein but modified so as to provide the same content of fibers and lipids found in flaxseed diet and kept in enriched environment; MCSEG, receiving modified casein based diet and kept in standard environment. All animals were kept under controlled temperature, collective cages and dark/light cycle, receiving chow and water ad libitum, except for MCEEG and MCSEG, which were pair fed with FEEG and FSEG, respectively. Chow intake and animal body weight were evaluated twice in a week. Animals were maintained in these groups from the first until the second month of life, by the time when 3 day tests in Open Field Test began. Finishing the tests, animals were sacrificed and their brains were obtained in order to calculate the relative brain weight. Our results show an interplay between flaxseed and environmental enrichment in habituation to a new environment, making the animals more manageable and less stressed.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of clay content on sewage sludge decomposition in soil and to propose mathematical models with clay dependent parameters. Soils with contrasting textures from the same sample matrix allowed better relationships to be derived between clay content, microbial biomass, organic carbon and CO2 production then those usually obtained in the literature. Clay effect was noticed only in the first week (R² = 0.59**). Kinetic models were proposed to model sludge decomposition in soils with different textures. Double phase first order models with non-simultaneous time scales were fitted to the data. Model parameters were correlated to clay content, emphasizing the clay effect on sewage sludge decomposition and providing a model for prediction of CO2 production.

Between October 1995 and February 1996, sixteen patients were selected to undergo to surgical myocardial revascularization through left anterolateral minithoracotomy. The left internal thoracic artery was dissected in all patients, for consecutive anastomosis with interventricular anterior artery, without using extracorporeal circulation. Patients age ranged from 43 to 77, average 60 years. Sixty-two percent of them were men. There were no complications such as: acute myocardial infarction, mediastinitis, acute renal failure, hemorrhagy or stroke. There were no deaths. Four (25%) patients were submitted to cardiac catheterization that showed patency of grafts and grafted native arteries. Due to excellent initial results, the authors believe that this technique can be employed with greater frequency and that its use can be extended to the treatment of diagonal branches of the interventricular anterior artery and marginal branches of the circunflex, as soon as the surgical teams become more familiarized with it.
