Objetivou-se, neste estudo, avaliar o efeito do tratamento de vapor preliminar à secagem sobre o teor de umidade inicial, gradiente de umidade e taxa de secagem da madeira de Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden. Tábuas foram vaporizadas à 100ºC após 1 hora de aquecimento inicial. Parte dessas tábuas foi seca em uma estufa elétrica à 50ºC, e outra parte foi seca em estufa de secagem convencional. Os resultados mostraram que a vaporização preliminar à secagem da madeira: (1) reduziu significativamente o teor de umidade inicial em 9.2%; (2) aumentou significativamente a taxa de secagem em 6.2%; (3) diminuiu significativamente o gradiente de umidade entre a camada externa e o centro das tábuas em 15.6%, e entre a camada intermediária e o centro das tábuas em 14.8%. As tábuas vaporizadas quando secas em estufa elétrica apresentaram taxa de secagem de 0.007065, enquanto que em estufa convencional foram 0.008200 e 0.034300 desde verde a 17% e de 17% a 12% de umidade, respectivamente. Ficou demonstrado que a vaporização preliminar à secagem pode ser responsável pela redução no tempo de secagem da madeira dessa espécie.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of steam treatment prior to drying on the initial moisture content, moisture gradient, and drying rate in Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden wood. Boards were steamed at 100ºC for 3 h after 1 h of heating-up. Part of these boards was dried in a drying electric oven at 50ºC, and part was dried at kiln. The results showed that the steaming prior to drying of wood: (1) significantly reduced by 9.2% the initial moisture content; (2) significantly increased by 6.2% the drying rate; (3) significantly decreased by 15.6 and 14.8% the moisture gradient between the outer layer and the center of boards and between the outer and intermediate layers of boards, respectively. Steamed boards when dried in an oven showed drying rate of 0.007065 whereas in kiln were 0.008200 and 0.034300 from green to 17 and 17 to 12% moisture content, respectively. It was demonstrated that the steaming prior to drying can be suitable for reduces the drying times of this kind of wood.

RESUMO A modificação térmica de madeiras é uma técnica que foi desenvolvida na década de 40 do século XX e tem sido largamente estudada e aplicada industrialmente na Europa. No Brasil a pesquisa neste tema ainda é pequena e pulverizada, porém vem ganhando destaque atualmente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do tempo e da temperatura de modificação térmica na redução do inchamento máximo da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis. De acordo com os resultados obtidos podem-se obter reduções do inchamento volumétrico máximo da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis superiores a 50%. Melhores resultados foram obtidos com a modificação térmica a temperatura de 230°C do que a 200°C. O fator temperatura foi mais significativo do que o fator tempo, uma vez que não houve diferença significativa entre os diferentes tempos utilizados (1, 2 e 3 horas). Não houve interação significativa entre estes fatores na modificação térmica.

ABSTRACT Thermal modification of wood was developed in the decade of 1940 and has been largerly studied and produced in Europe. In Brazil, the research about this technique is still little and sparse, but it has gained attention nowadays. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of time and temperature of modification on the reduction of maximum swelling of Eucalyptus grandis wood. According to the results obtained it is possible to achieve reductions of about 50% on the maximum volumetric swelling of Eucalyptus grandis wood. The best results were obtained for 230°C of thermal modification rather than 200 °C. The factor temperature was more significant than time, once that there was no significant difference between the times used (1, 2 and 3 hours). There was no significant interaction between the factors time and temperature.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a study carried out to investigate the effect of two sawing models (flat sawn and back sawn) on the dimension of boards produced from logs of two diameter classes of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus dunnii. Flat sawn boards were wider, a more uniform length and less thicknesses variation. Back sawn boards had a larger variation on width and also a larger number of shorts. It was concluded that under the conditions used in this research the best alternative is to produce flat sawn boards.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de dois modelos de corte (radial e tangencial), considerando toras de duas classes diamétricas nas dimensões de tábuas serradas de Eucalyptus grandis e Eucalyptus dunni. As tábuas tangenciais apresentaram larguras superiores e comprimentos mais homogêneos, com menor variação em espessura. O desdobro radial apresentou maior variação em largura, mas aumentou o número de tábuas curtas. A conclusão principal é de que o desdobro tangencial, nas condições deste experimento, resultou em peças de maior dimensão e, portanto é o mais indicado.

RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da vaporização em toras e madeira serrada de Eucalyptus dunnii sobre as propriedades de compressão paralela e perpendicular às fibras e cisalhamento no sentiod radial e tangencial aos anéis de crescimento. As razões do estudo deve-se à possibilidade de aliviar as tensões de crescimento existentes na espécie pelo emprego da vaporização. Os ensaios foram realizados na condição climatizada (12% de umidade). Para isso, dois terços das toras, com diâmetro entre 20 a 30 cm, proveniente de seis árvores por procedência dessa espécie foram vaporizadas a 100ºC e 100% de umidade relativa durante 20 horas, enquanto que as demais toras foram utizadas com controle. De cada tora foi retirada uma prancha central, orientada radialmente, de 8 cm de espessura, das quais se retirou vigotas de 8 cm x 8 cm. Metade das vigotas provenientes de toras vaporizadas foram novamente submetidas à vaporização, durante 3 horas, nas mesmas condições anteriormente descritas, obtendo-se, dessa forma, três níveis de comparação (controle, vaporizado em toras e madeira pré-vaporizada). Os resultados mostraram que o módulo de elasticidade em compressão paralela às fibras e o esforço no limite proporcional em compressão perpendicular as fibras não sofreram qualquer alteração com a vaporização. Entretanto a resistência máxima em compressão paralela as fibras e o cisalhamento (sentido radial e tangencial) mostraram reduzir significativamente com a vaporização.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the vaporization effects on the crushing strength at limit of proportionality on perpendicular compression, crushing strength and modulus of elasticity in parallel compression to the fiber and shear strength (radial and tangential direction) on logs and sawn wood of two sources of Eucalyptus dunnii. The mechanical attempts were performed under the Copant standards in the climatized conditions (12%). To do so, about two thirds of the logs, with a diameter between 20-30 cm, were vaporized at 100o C and 100% of relative humidity for 20 hours, while the remaining logs were kept as control. From each log, a central plank radially directed with eight centimeter of thickness was taken, from which small beams of 8 cm x 8 cm were taken. Half of the small beams from the vaporized logs were once again submitted to vaporization under the same previously described conditions for a period of 3 hours, thus obtaining three different levels of comparison (control, vaporized on logs and presteaming wood). The results showed a remarkable reduction on the crushing strength in parallel compression to the fiber and shear strength (radial and tangential direction) with the vaporization on the two conditions and sources of Eucalyptus dunnii used. On the other hand, the crushing strength at limit of proportionality on perpendicular compression and modulus of elasticity in parallel compression did not show any change with the vaporization.

RESUMO Neste estudo foi avaliado um programa de secagem para madeira de Eucalyptus viminalis de 25,0 mm de espessura, de duas árvores previamente aneladas (antes da derrubada e na confecção dos toretes) e posteriormente vaporizadas. O programa de secagem constou de três diferentes fases de vaporização, sendo uma inicial de duas horas, para acelerar o processo de secagem, uma vaporização intermediária de quatro horas, para recuperação do colapso e uma vaporização final de uma hora, para diminuir o gradiente de umidade e as tensões de secagem, todas realizadas a 100°C. Os bons resultados obtidos com o programa de secagem aplicado permitiu um aproveitamento de 72% da madeira (livre de defeitos). Estes resultados positivos podem ser atribuídos à aplicação de um programa de secagem gradual, às diferentes vaporizações a que a madeira foi submetida, como também ao fato de ter sido aplicada a técnica de anelamento e vaporização.

ABSTRACT This study was carried out to evaluate a drying schedule for Eucalyptus viminalis. Two trees were cut after of a circumferencial groove with a chain saw. The logs were schedule prior to transformation into 25 mm thick boards. The increase the rate of drying, a intermediate steaming for a period of 4 hours used to recuperate steaming for a final steaming to relief moisture gradients and internal tensions. All steaming treatment were done at 100°C. The results obtained indicated that using such technics about 72% of the boards were practically free of defects. The results can be considered as very positive, and it is probably due to the combination of the treatments applied (lo steaming and a circumferencial groove with a chain saw). as well to the adequade drying schedule.
