ABSTRACT Special corn is cultivated all year conventionally round; however, its productivity increases when grown under a no-tillage system (NTS). This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance of sweet and green corn cultivated under residues of different cover crops and the NTS implantation stages. Two experiments were carried out in the randomized block design, with four replications, in each of the three areas. The experiments consisted of evaluating the sweet and green corn, simultaneously, in three areas at different stages of development of NTS: initial (1 year), transition (7 years), and consolidation (19 years) with six types of cover crops: Signal grass (SG), Pearl millet (PM), Sunn hemp (SH), a mixture of SG + SH, SG + PM, and PM + SH. The dry matter (DM) production of the cover crops, the productivity of husked and unhusked ears, straw, and grain yield were evaluated. The SH had the highest dry mass production among the studied cover crops in all phases of the NTS. The phase of the NTS did not influence the productivity of ears with or without husk in green corn. The cultivation of sweet corn in transition and consolidation areas of the NTS showed better yields when compared to the initial phase of the system.

Abstract Background: Elderly patients may present with visual function impairment after surgery, which may increase the incidence of postoperative delirium and falls and decrease their quality of life. The aim of this study was to assess visual function in elderly patients after long-duration nonocular surgery to determine the incidence and risk factors for visual function impairment after surgery. Methods: This prospective and observational study included patients aged between 60 and 80 years who had been scheduled for elective non-ocular surgery expected to last longer than 120 minutes under general anaesthesia. Ocular examinations were performed before surgery, on post-operative day 3 and on post-operative day 21 and consisted of a LogMAR-Snellen chart test, a Jager chart test, biomicroscopy, optical tonometry, ocular motility assessment and fundoscopy. Baseline characteristics of all patients as well as intraoperative and postoperative data were collected. Results: A total of 107 patients were included in the final analysis. Visual function impairment was diagnosed in 21 patients (19.6%) at POD 3. Of those, 7 patients (6.5%) still presented with visual changes at POD 21. On POD 3, compared with that at baseline, visual acuity assessed by the Snellen chart test had decreased in these patients. Significant differences regarding refraction tests and intraocular pressure measures were also found. Multivariable analysis identified diabetes mellitus, duration of surgery, hypotension during anaesthesia induction, lower peripheral oxygen saturation at the end of the procedure and body mass index as independent risk factors for postoperative visual impairment. Conclusion: In elderly patients undergoing long-duration non-ocular procedures under general anaesthesia, the incidence of visual function impairment was considerably high. Most patients recovered to baseline visual function, but clinically significant visual changes may still be present 3 weeks after surgery. Obesity, diabetes mellitus, and the duration of surgical and anaesthetic techniques appear to increase the risk of visual impairment after surgery.

Abstract Litter decomposition in the soil is an important stage of the nutrient cycling process that interferes with functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Soil fertility and litter nutritional quality are fundamental factors that affect decomposition efficiency of plant residues. We evaluated decomposition in two areas of ‘cerrado sensu stricto’, each with a type of Neosol – limestone (eutrophic) and sandstone (dystrophic). In a rural area located in the municipality of Ituiutaba (MG, Brazil), 10 plots were randomly selected to install litter bags with 10 g of mixture of dry leaves that were used to estimate rate and time of leaf-litter decomposition from October/2015 to January/2016. Decomposition rate in the limestone cerrado was significantly higher than in the sandstone cerrado. This difference mustn’t be explained by the edaphic texture between areas, since it was similar between them. But may be explained through aluminum absence and higher soil fertility in the limestone cerrado, especially phosphorus that is highly limiting in dystrophic cerrados like the sandstone cerrados, in which decay of decomposing leaf-litter was directly proportional to the levels of phosphorus. Limestone presence reduces aluminum toxicity and circumvent phosphorus limitation in the cerrado, favoring decomposition. Such influence is probably an important feature for limestone cerrados.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the residual concentration from the application of levels of phosphorus contained in an organomineral fertilizer (OMF) in two soils cultivated with cabbage and lettuce in succession. In randomized blocks, five doses of OMF were used as a source of P in Oxisol (0, 50, 100, 200, and 300% of the P dose was recommended for cabbage crop using OMF), plus an additional treatment (100% mineral). The doses applied to the Entisol were as follows: 0, 50, 100, 200, and 300% of the recommended P dose with OMF for cabbage crop, plus an additional treatment (100% mineral), with four repetitions. The production of fresh matter (FM) and dry matter (DM), the nutritional status of the cabbage and lettuce, and the residual effect of nutrients in the soil were also evaluated. The P concentration in the soil increased (p ≤ 0.05) with higher doses of OMF in the Oxisol in the two cycles evaluated. However, this occurred only in the first cycle in the Entisol. Using the 50% dose of OMF in the cabbage in both soils provided FM and DM production values that were at least 11% higher than those attained with mineral fertilizer.

The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

BACKGROUND: We compare neuropathological abnormalities in children and adults after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) by means of autopsy in the Department of Medical Pathology, Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), Brazil. METHODS: Autopsy reports of 180 patients were reviewed. They were divided in two groups: patients under 15 years old and those 15 or older. Age, gender, clinical diagnosis at time of BMT, survival time, neuropathological abnormalities and cause of death were analyzed. RESULTS: In children (26.6% of total) and in the adult group (73.4% of total), the main clinical diagnoses prior to BMT were, respectively, severe aplastic anemia (31.2%) and chronic myeloid leukemia (36.3%). The mean survival time for children was 102.6 days and for adults, 185.9 days after BMT. Brain lesions were considered cause of death in 20.8% of pediatric cases and 11.3% of the adult group. Neuropathological abnormalities were morphologically similar in children and adults, with the following respectively prevalence: cerebrovascular diseases in 58.3 and 56% (p = 0.8655), neurotoxoplasmosis in 6.2% and 3% (p = 0.3856) and infections in 27 and 25.7% (p = 0.8489). CONCLUSIONS: The pediatric patients had shorter survival than adults, with increasing prevalence of neurotoxoplasmosis, and brain lesions were considered cause of death in twice as many as compared to adult patients.

The degree of green rot severity was evaluated in two yam species, D. alata and D. cayennensis. The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Penicillium sclerotigenum, a highly virulent pathogen on D. cayennensis in the producing areas all over the world. In addition, by cross inoculation, an investigation was conducted on the occurrence of physiological adaptations of the fungus relative to its pathogenicity on these species of yams. To complement this study the mycelial growth of P. sclerotigenum was evaluated on three culture media, two based on extracts of the yam species examined and the other one on potato (Solanum tuberosum). Dextrose and agar were added to all cultures. The results showed that green rot was less severe on D. alata than on D. cayennensis. No physiological adaptation in relation to the pathogenicity of P. sclerotigenum to both yam species was found. Potato-dextrose-agar and D. cayennensis-dextrose-agar were the best substrates for P. sclerotigenum development and growth.

The experiment was conducted at the Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, fron July to December, 1993. The effects of different levels of nitrogen (0; 24; 48; 72 and 96 kg.ha-1 of N) was evaluated over some morphological characteristics of the fruit and over yield of the jiló, cultivar Tinguá. Harvest began 105 days after sowing date, in 10-day intervals. The diameter, length, medium weight and total yield of fruits were evaluated. The jiló plant responds positively to the nitrogen fertilizer application, increasing the yield up to 35,7%, in relation to the control plot, in spite of non statistical differences among nitrogen levels; the morphologic characteristics suffered no influence from N levels.
