Resumo Objetivo Encontrar evidências dos sintomas de ansiedade/depressão em crianças com transtorno do desenvolvimento da coordenação em comparação com seus pares com desenvolvimento típico, a nível individual bem como em grupo, e identificar quantas ferramentas diferentes são utilizadas para medir a ansiedade e/ou depressão. Métodos Pesquisa eletrônica em oito bases de dados (PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Eric, PsycINFO, Embase, Scielo e Lilacs), utilizando as seguintes palavras-chave: ‘Developmental Coordination Disorder’, ‘Behavioral Problems’, ‘Child’, ‘Anxiety’, ‘Depression’, ‘Mental Health’ e ‘Mental Disorders’. A qualidade metodológica foi avaliada pela escala de Newcastle-Ottawa (NOS) adaptada para estudos transversais e pela escala de Newcastle-Ottawa (NOS) para estudos de coorte. Os estudos foram classificados em: qualidade baixa, moderada e alta. Para fornecer evidência clínica, o tamanho do efeito dos sintomas de ansiedade e depressão foi calculado para cada estudo. Resultados As buscas iniciais nas bases de dados identificaram 581 estudos e, após a aplicação dos critérios de elegibilidade, seis estudos foram incluídos na revisão. Todos os estudos foram classificados como tendo qualidade moderada a alta e os tamanhos do efeito para os desfechos de ansiedade e depressão foram médios. As evidências indicaram que 100% dos estudos avaliados apresentaram mais sintomas de ansiedade e depressão em crianças com transtorno do desenvolvimento da coordenação do que em seus pares com desenvolvimento típico. No nível individual, encontramos crianças com sintomas clínicos de ansiedade em 17-34% (transtorno do desenvolvimento da coordenação) e 0-23% (desenvolvimento típico) e de depressão em 9-15% (transtorno do desenvolvimento da coordenação) e 2-5% (desenvolvimento típico) das crianças. Conclusões Crianças com transtorno do desenvolvimento da coordenação apresentam maior risco de desenvolver sintomas de ansiedade e depressão do que seus pares com desenvolvimento típico.

Abstract Objective To find evidence of the symptoms of anxiety/depression in children with developmental coordination disorder as compared to their typically developing peers at both the group and individual level, and to identify how many different tools are used to measure anxiety and/or depression. Methods Electronic searches in eight databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, PsycINFO, Embase, SciELO and LILACS), using the following keywords: ‘Developmental Coordination Disorder,’ ‘Behavioral Problems,’ ‘Child,’ ‘Anxiety,’ ‘Depression,’ ‘Mental Health,’ and ‘Mental Disorders.’ The methodological quality was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa Scale adapted for cross-sectional studies and the NOS for cohort studies. The studies were classified as low, moderate, or high quality. To provide clinical evidence, the effect size of the symptoms of anxiety and depression was calculated for each study. Results The initial database searches identified 581 studies, and after the eligibility criteria were applied, six studies were included in the review. All studies were classified as being of moderate to high quality, and the effect sizes for both anxiety and depression outcomes were medium. The evidence indicated that all of the assessed studies presented more symptoms of anxiety and depression in children with developmental coordination disorder than in their typically developing peers. On the individual level, this review found children with clinical symptoms of anxiety in 17-34% (developmental coordination disorder) and 0-23% (typically developing), and of depression in 9-15% (developmental coordination disorder) and 2-5% (typically developing) of the children. Conclusions Children with developmental coordination disorder are at higher risk of developing symptoms of anxiety and depression than their typically developing peers.

Abstract Aim: To analyze the association between lifestyle and signs of DCD in children aged 7 to 10. Methods: A total of 93 schoolchildren aged 7 to 10 were recruited for this study. Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ), Movement Assessment Battery for Children – Second edition (MABC-2) and the Inventory of Lifestyle in Childhood and Adolescence (ILCA) were used. Lifestyle was analyzed with basis on specific tasks performed frequently or infrequently at home and outdoor, considering children with positive and negative DCD signs. Results: Only the item “performing household tasks” showed a significant association (p = 0.04) between groups. Children with DCD signs displayed a more infrequent behavior (73.1 %) in performing such tasks when compared to those without (26.9 %). Conclusion: Children with DCD signs presented a more sedentary behavior, expressed specifically in the less frequent performance of household tasks. The result may be explained by parental involvement in this sort of task. Further studies, however, are needed in order to broaden this understanding.

Resumo Objetivo: Investigar o efeito do peso adicional nos ajustes proximais e distais do alcance em lactentes a termo (AT) e pré-termo tardios (PTT). Método: Foram avaliados 10 lactentes AT e 9 PTT dos 5 aos 7 meses de idade. As variáveis analisadas foram: a) ajustes proximais: unimanuais ou bimanuais; b) ajustes distais: abertura das mãos (aberta, fechada ou semiaberta) e orientação das mãos (horizontalizada, verticalizada ou oblíqua). Os procedimentos analisados foram: P1 (linha de base) e P2 (acréscimo de 20% da massa do membro superior de peso adicional). Para verificar a associação entre os procedimentos e as variáveis dependentes utilizou-se o Teste Qui-quadrado (p<0,05). Resultados: O peso adicional proporcionou a diminuição de alcances bimanuais aos 5 e 7 meses no grupo PTT, o aumento da frequência de mão verticalizada e a diminuição da frequência de mão aberta no início do movimento, aos 6 meses. No grupo AT, o peso implicou no aumento da mão verticalizada no início e no fim do movimento, aos 5 meses, e ao final do movimento, aos 7 meses, e diminuiu a frequência de mão aberta no início e final do alcance, aos 6 meses. Conclusão: O peso adicional favoreceu um movimento mais maduro na maioria das variáveis analisadas e, de forma mais expressiva, no grupo prematuro. Assim, pode tornar-se um instrumento para o treino inicial do alcance, quando o objetivo for a estimulação de alcances unimanuais com a mão verticalizada.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of additional weight in the proximal and distal adjustments of the reaching behavior of full-term and preterm infants. Method: We evaluated 10 full-term and 9 low risk preterm infants from 5 to 7 months age. The following variables were analyzed: a) proximal adjustments: unimanual or bimanual; b) distal adjustments: hand opening (open, closed, semi-open) and hand orientation (horizontal, vertical, oblique). Variables were analyzed in two procedures: P1 (baseline) and P2 (addition of 20% of the total mass of the infant’s upper limb). To verify the association between procedures and dependent variables was applied Chi-Square Test (p<0,05). Results: Additional weight decreased of bimanual frequency for the preterm group at 5 and 7 months old, increased vertical hand frequency and decreased open hand frequency at 6 months. In the full-term group, additional weight increased the vertical hand frequency at the initiation and at the end of the movement at 5 months and at the end of the movement at 7 months. It also decreased open hand frequency at the initiation and at the end of the reaching at 6 months. Conclusion: Additional weight favored a more mature movement in the majority of variables analyzed, more expressively in the preterm group. Therefore, it can become an instrument of training this skill in the beginning of the reaching, when looking for verticalized hand unimanual reaching stimulation.

Abstract AIM The objective of this study was to identify socio-demographic factors that are associated with the guardians’ perception of developmental coordination disorder among schoolchildren from seven to ten years old. METHODS The parents/guardians of 361 children completed the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ) and a socio-demographic questionnaire in this cross-sectional study. The univariate relationship between the DCDQ and socio-demographic factors was tested by the chi-square test. The odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval was calculated. Socio-demographic variables with p≤0.20 were included in the logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The child's age (B = 0.40; OR = 1.49; p <0.01) and the guardian undergoing treatment for illness (B = 0.97; OR = 2.65; p = 0.02) were retained in the final regression model. CONCLUSION Thus, increasing children’s’ age and guardians undergoing treatment for illness increased the guardians’perception of developmental coordination disorder.

BACKGROUND: Infants with Down syndrome present with organic and neurological changes that may lead to a delay in the acquisition of motor skills such as kicking, a fundamental skill that is a precursor of gait and is influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Therefore, this movement should be taken into account in early physical therapy interventions in infants. OBJECTIVE: To analyze and to compare the effect of additional weight on the frequency of kicks in infants with Down syndrome and infants with typical development at 3 and 4 months of age. METHOD: Five infants with Down syndrome and five with typical development at 3 and 4 months of age were filmed. The experiment was divided into four experimental conditions lasting 1 minute each: training, baseline, weight (addition of ankle weight with 1/3 the weight of the lower limb), and post-weight. RESULTS: There were significant differences between groups for all variables (p<0.05), with lower frequencies observed for infants with Down syndrome in all variables. There were significant differences between the experimental conditions baseline and post-weight (p<0.001) for both groups in the frequency of contact and success, with a higher frequency in the post-weight condition. CONCLUSIONS: The weight acted as an important stimulus for both groups, directing the kicks toward the target and improving the infants' performance in the task through repetition, however, the infants with Down syndrome had lower frequencies of kicks.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that long-term experience can promote functional changes in infants. However, much remains unknown about how a short-term experience affects performance of a task. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the influence of a single training session at the onset of goal-directed reaching on the spatio-temporal parameters of reaching and whether there are differences in the effects of training across different reaching positions. METHOD: Thirty-three infants were divided into three groups: 1) a control group; 2) a group that was reach trained in a reclined position; and 3) a group trained in the supine position. The infants were submitted to two assessments (pre- and post-training) in two testing positions (supine and reclined at 45°). RESULTS: The short-duration training sessions were effective in promoting shorter reaches in the specific position in which the training was conducted. Training in the reclined position was associated with shorter and faster reaches upon assessment in the reclined position. CONCLUSIONS: A few minutes of reach training are effective in facilitating reaching behavior in infants at the onset of reaching. The improvements in reaching were specific to the position in which the infants were trained.

Os objetivos deste estudo foram descrever o método utilizado para a análise cinemática dos movimentos de chutes em lactentes e testar sua viabilidade de uso, empregando o sistema Dvideow. Para adequação do método, quatro lactentes foram filmados, longitudinalmente, nas idades de um a seis meses na posição supina. O experimento teve a duração de dois minutos, subdivididos em duas condições: treinamento e observação. O sistema Dvideow 6.3 foi utilizado para análise das imagens. Foi verificado que o uso de quatro câmeras de vídeo é mais apropriado para garantir a visibilidade de dois marcadores, simultaneamente, permitindo a reconstrução tridimensional do movimento. Além disso, utilizamos 6 fios de prumo para calibrar o sistema e garantir uma precisão de 2 mm. Portanto, concluímos que a utilização do sistema Dvideow para realizar a análise cinemática dos chutes de lactentes mostrou-se adequada e viável, uma vez que esse sistema é acessível, de baixo custo e de fácil utilização para os pesquisadores em geral.

The aims of this study were to describe the method used for the kinematic analysis of kicking movements in infants and test its feasibility of use, using the Dvideow system. To adjust the method, four infants were longitudinally videotaped at ages from one to six months in the supine position. The experiment lasted two minutes, divided into two conditions: training and observation. The Dvideow system 6.3 for image analysis was used. It was verified that the use of four video cameras was more appropriate for the visibility of two markers simultaneously, allowing 3D reconstruction of motion. Moreover, 6 plumb lines were used to calibrate the system and ensure an accuracy of 2 mm. It was concluded that the use of the Dvideow system to perform kinematic analysis of the kicking movement in infants proved to be appropriate and feasible, since this system is accessible, of low cost and easy to be used for researchers in general.

Los objetivos de este estudio fueron describir el método utilizado para el análisis cinemático de los movimientos de pataleo en lactantes y probar su factibilidad de uso, empleando el sistema Dvideow. Para la adecuación del método, cuatro lactantes fueron filmados, longitudinalmente, en las edades de uno a seis meses en la posición supina. El experimento tiene una duración de dos minutos, subdivididos en dos condiciones: entrenamiento y observación. El sistema Dvideow 6.3 fue utilizado para el análisis de las imágenes. Fue verificado que el uso de cuatro cámaras de video es más apropiado para garantizar la visibilidad de dos marcadores simultáneos, permitiendo la reconstrucción tridimensional del movimiento. Además, utilizamos seis alambres de plomo para calibrar el sistema y garantizar una precisión de 2 mm. Por lo tanto, concluimos que la utilización del sistema Dvideow para realizar el análisis cinemático de los pataleos de lactantes se mostró adecuada y viable, ya que éste sistema es accesible, de bajo costo y de fácil utilización para los investigadores en general.

Um aspecto de interesse sobre a formação da preferência manual humana em idades precoces é a extensão em que ela é afetada por informações aferentes. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o efeito da oclusão visual do braço preferido sobre a preferência manual e desempenho motor em bebês. Participaram cinco bebês com cinco meses de idade, que realizaram alcances com visão plena ou oclusão visual do braço preferido. O desempenho motor foi avaliado por meio de medidas cinemáticas. Os resultados indicaram que a oclusão visual induziu redução da frequência de alcances unimanuais com o braço ocluído durante e imediatamente após a oclusão visual. Oclusão visual não alterou o desempenho motor. Estes resultados indicam que a formação da preferência manual durante o desenvolvimento motor é afetada pela disponibilidade de informação visual dos braços, embora os bebês pareçam ter pouca capacidade de usar a visão para controle motor.

An interesting aspect about formation of human manual preference in early ages is the extent to which it is affected by afferent information. This study aimed at investigating the effect of visual occlusion of the preferred arm on manual preference and motor performance in infants. Five 5-month-old infants performed reaching movements under full vision or occlusion of their preferred arm. Motor performance was assessed through kinematic measures. Results indicated that visual occlusion led to reduction of frequency of unimanual reaches using the visually occluded arm. Visual occlusion did not impair motor performance. These results indicate that formation of manual preference during motor development is affected by availability of visual afference of the arms, although infants seem to have reduced capacity to use vision for motor control.

INTRODUÇÃO: O objetivo do estudo foi analisar e comparar padrões de chutes com e sem peso adicional em lactentes pré-termo e de termo aos 3 e 4 meses de idade. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram filmados 26 lactentes aos 3 e 4 meses de idade, divididos em Grupo Experimental, 12 lactentes pré-termo sem idade corrigida; e Grupo Controle, 14 lactentes de termo. O experimento foi subdividido em quatro condições, a saber: 1) Treinamento (T): o pesquisador tocava os pés dos lactentes no painel, elevando-o; 2) Linha de Base (LB): movimentos livres de chutes, podendo o lactente elevar ou não o painel com os pés; 3) Peso (P): acréscimo de tornozeleira pesando 1/3 da massa do membro inferior; 4) Pós-Peso (PP): idêntica à LB. RESULTADOS: Na variável frequência de chutes, constatou-se diferença entre as idades [F(5,72) = 5,620; p = 0,0035] e entre as condições LB-P (p = 0,023) e P-PP (p < 0,001). Na variável frequência de contato, obteve-se diferença entre as condições LB-P (p = 0,002) e P-PP (p < 0,001). Na variável sucesso ao elevar o painel, constatou-se diferença entre os grupos (x²(1) = 4,341; p = 0,0013) e as condições LB-P (p = 0,003), LB-PP (p = 0,002) e P-PP (p = 0,002) aos 3 meses de idade. Na variável duração de chute, constatou-se diferença entre as condições LB-P (p = 0,023) e P-PP (p = 0,010). CONCLUSÃO Os chutes de lactentes pré-termo se diferenciam dos termos dependendo das características intrínsecas e extrínsecas.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze and compare patterns of kicks with and without additional weight in preterm and full-term infants of 3 and 4 months old. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six infants were filmed at 3 and 4 months of age, divided into experimental group, 12 preterm infants without corrected age, and control group, 14 infants full-term. The experiment was subdivided into four conditions, namely: 1) Training (T): the investigator touched the infants' feet on the panel, raising it; 2) Baseline (B): free movements of kicks, the infant may raise or not the panel with feet, 3) Weight (W): addition of anklet weighing 1/3 the mass of lower limb, 4) Post-weight (PW): identical to B. RESULTS: Difference was found in the variable frequency of kicks, considering ages [F (5,72) = 5.620, p = 0.0035] and conditions B-W (p = 0.023) and W-PW (p < 0.001). In the variable frequency of contact difference was obtained considering conditions B-W (p = 0.002) and W-PW (p < 0.001). In the variable success in raising the panel, difference was found between groups (x²(1) = 4.341, p = 0.0013) and conditions B-W (p = 0.003), B-W (p = 0.002) and W-PW (p = 0.002) at 3 months of age. The variable length of the kick presented a difference between conditions B-W (p = 0.023) and W-PW (p = 0.010). CONCLUSION: The kicks of preterm infants differ depending on the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics.

Durante o processo de aquisição do chute em lactentes, a preferência podal pode ser influenciada de forma diferente pelos fatores extrínsecos e intrínsecos. O objetivo foi comparar a preferência podal e verificar a influência do peso adicional e do Reflexo Tônico Cervical Assimétrico (RTCA) na preferência podal entre lactentes com síndrome de Down e típicos. Participaram do estudo cinco lactentes com síndrome de Down e cinco típicos aos três e quatro meses de idade. O experimento foi subdividido em quatro condições experimentais: Treinamento, Linha de Base, Peso e Pós-Peso. Os lactentes com síndrome de Down apresentaram preferência à esquerda ou indefinida e os típicos, preferência à direita. O RTCA influenciou na preferência podal em ambos os grupos, indicando que o lado de rotação da cabeça orientou o chute do mesmo lado. Nos lactentes com síndrome de Down a correlação entre RTCA e chutes foi positiva, sendo forte aos três meses e moderada aos quatro meses. Para os lactentes típicos foi observada correlação positiva fraca aos três meses, e aos quatro meses a correlação não foi estatisticamente significativa. Lactentes com síndrome de Down apresentam preferência podal contrária aos lactentes típicos. O RTCA exerce influência na preferência podal por um período mais longo em lactentes com síndrome de Down em comparação aos lactentes típicos.

During the acquisition process of the kick in infants, foot preference may be influenced differently by extrinsic and intrinsic factors. The aim was to compare the foot preference and find the influence of additional weight and Asymmetrical Neck Tonic Reflex (ANTR) on the foot preference of infants with Down syndrome and typical ones. Five infants with Down syndrome and five typical infants at three and four months of age participated of the sudy. The experiment was divided into four experimental conditions: Training, Baseline, Weight and After Weight. Infants with Down syndrome showed preference to the left or indefinite, the typical infants showed preference to the right. ANTR influenced the foot preference in both groups, indicanting that the rotation of head side oriented the kicking for the same side. For infants with Down syndrome the correlation between ANTR and kicking was positive, with a strong positive correlation at three months of age and a moderate positive correlation at four months of age observed. For typical infants it was observed weak positive correlation at three months of age and at four months of age, the correlation was not significant. Infants with Down syndrome have foot preference contrary to typical infants. ATNR influences the foot preference for a longer period in infants with Down syndrome compared to typical infants.

CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: Objetos influenciam nos ajustes do alcance de lactentes, no entanto ainda não se investigou se esses ajustes se modificam em crianças com mais idade. OBJETIVOS: Verificar se o tamanho e a rigidez dos objetos influenciam os ajustes proximais e distais do alcance dos 6 aos 8 meses e aos 36 meses de idade. MÉTODOS: A nove crianças saudáveis foram apresentados: um objeto rígido grande, um rígido pequeno, um maleável grande e um maleável pequeno. Os alcances foram filmados e posteriormente analisados qualitativamente quanto aos ajustes proximais (alcance uni e bimanual) e distais (orientação da mão horizontalizada, verticalizada e oblíqua; mão aberta, semiaberta e fechada) e a preensão desses objetos (com e sem). Foram aplicados o Teste de Friedman e as comparações múltiplas de Dunn, considerando-se 0,05 como diferença significativa. RESULTADOS: Constatou-se que, aos 36 meses, houve mais alcances unimanuais do que nas idades anteriores e, em todas as idades, os alcances unimanuais foram realizados principalmente para os objetos pequenos. Aos 36 meses, as crianças orientaram a mão horizontalizada para tocar e apreender os objetos, enquanto que, aos 6 e 7 meses, a orientação foi oblíqua para tocar e verticalizada para apreendê-los, independentemente das propriedades dos objetos. No decorrer dos meses, tanto no início quanto no final do alcance, as mãos tornaram-se mais abertas, principalmente para tocar o objeto rígido grande, e as crianças realizaram cada vez mais alcances com preensão, principalmente para os objetos maleáveis ou objetos pequenos. CONCLUSÕES: De 6 a 36 meses, os alcances tornaram-se mais refinados e ajustados às propriedades mais discrepantes dos objetos apresentados, o que se observou pelas modificações nos ajustes proximais e distais.

BACKGROUND: It has been found that objects influence the adjustments to reaching of breastfeeding infants, however, it has not been investigated whether these adjustments change in older infants. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether the size and rigidity of objects influence the proximal and distal adjustments to reaching of infants of 6, 7, 8 and 36 months of age. METHODS: Nine healthy infants were presented with: one large rigid, one small rigid, one large malleable and one small malleable object. The movements were videotaped and later analyzed qualitatively with regard to proximal (unimanual and bimanual reaching) and distal adjustments (horizontal, vertical and oblique hand orientation, opened, half-open and closed hand) and with regard to grasping of these objects (with and without). Friedman test and Dunn multiple comparisons were applied and 0.05 was considered as a significant difference. RESULTS: Infants of 36 months of age performed more unimanual reaching than younger infants. Additionally, at all ages, unimanual reaching was particularly performed for small objects. At 36 months of age infants guided the hand horizontally to touch and grasp the objects, while at 6 and 7 months the hand orientation was oblique to touch and vertical to grasp the objects, regardless of the object's properties. Over the months, both at the beginning and at the end of reaching, the hands became more open, especially to touch the large rigid object, and infants increasingly performed reaching with successful grasping, especially for malleable or small objects. CONCLUSIONS: From 6 to 36 months of age, the reaching became more refined and the infants adjusted to the different properties of the objects which were observed through changes in the proximal and distal adjustments.

Preferência manual em bebês de 5 meses de idade foi avaliada em tarefas de alcançar alvos estáticos posicionados na linha média, à direita e à esquerda com referência a coordenadas egocêntricas. A análise da frequência de uso das mãos indicou direção e magnitude de preferência manual diversificadas entre os bebês. Foi observado que os bebês realizaram predominantemente alcances ipsilaterais para alvos posicionados lateralmente. Para alcances na linha média a frequência de uso foi semelhante entre as mãos direita e esquerda. Os resultados sugerem que nessa fase do desenvolvimento a preferência manual para o alcançar é alterada pela posição dos objetos no espaço.

Manual preference of 5-month-old infants was evaluated in tasks of reaching static targets positioned on the midline, at the left and right, regarding egocentric coordinates. Frequency analysis of using the hands pointed out to diversified direction and magnitude of manual preference among infants. It was observed that they predominantly made ipsilateral reaches toward targets laterally positioned. Frequency of using the right and left hands was similar for targets located at the midline. The results suggest that in this stage of development manual preference is shifted by the spatial position of the objects.

OBJETIVOS: Este estudo objetivou caracterizar o padrão e o ritmo de aquisição das habilidades motoras de lactentes nascidos pré-termo nos quatro primeiros meses de idade corrigida, comparando-os com um grupo de lactentes a termo. MÉTODOS: Participaram do estudo 12 lactentes pré-termo saudáveis, (MD=33,6 semanas de idade gestacional, ± 1,25) e 10 lactentes a termo saudáveis (MD=39,1 semanas de idade gestacional, ± 0,73). Eles foram avaliados mensalmente (zero a quatro meses de idade) com o Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP). RESULTADOS: O padrão de desempenho motor aumentou ao longo dos meses em ambos os grupos, constatando variabilidade nos escores totais em todas as idades. O grupo pré-termo apresentou escore médio mais elevado do que o a termo entre um e quatro meses de idade. Nesse grupo, o ritmo de aquisição motora foi maior de zero a um do que de três a quatro meses. Verificou-se também que os cuidadores desses lactentes iniciaram a estimulação com brinquedos anteriormente aos cuidadores do grupo a termo. Ambos os grupos apresentaram escores médios inferiores aos do TIMP. CONCLUSÕES: Os lactentes pré-termo apresentaram padrão de desenvolvimento motor semelhante aos típicos quanto à sequência de habilidades adquiridas e ritmo acelerado no período de recém-nascido (RN) a um mês de idade. Sugere-se que lactentes pré-termo com essas características não necessitam de correção do grau de prematuridade e que programas de acompanhamento orientem os pais e cuidadores a estimulá-los, desde o primeiro mês, com brinquedos, propiciando a exploração precoce de diversos padrões motores.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the pattern and rate of motor skill acquisition among preterm infants from newborn to four months corrected age, in comparison with a group of full-term infants. METHODS: Twelve healthy preterm infants (mean gestational age=33.6 weeks ± 1.25) and 10 healthy full-term infants (mean gestational age=39.1 weeks ± 0.73) participated in the study. These infants were assessed monthly (0-4 months of age) using the Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP). RESULTS: The motor performance pattern increased over the months in both groups, with variability in the total scores at all ages. The preterm group presented a higher mean score than shown by the full-term group between one and four months of age. In the full-term group, the motor acquisition rate was higher from age newborn to one month than from age three to four months. It was also found that the caregivers of the preterm infants began toy stimulation earlier than did the caregivers of the full-term infants. Both groups presented mean scores below the TIMP values. CONCLUSIONS: The preterm infants presented a pattern of motor development similar to the typical pattern regarding the sequence of abilities achieved. The preterm infants also presented a faster rate during the neonate period at one month of age. This suggests that correction for prematurity is unnecessary for preterm infants with these characteristics and that follow-up programs should instruct parents and caregivers to begin stimulation with toys at one month of age, thereby providing early exploration of various motor skills.

O estudo teve por objetivo analisar a preferência manual de crianças ao alcançar objetos de diferentes tamanhos nas idades de 4, 6, 8 e 36 meses. Para tanto, nove crianças saudáveis foram posicionadas em uma cadeira reclinada para trás a 50º com a horizontal e a elas foram apresentados quatro objetos de rigidez e tamanhos distintos. Foram coletados longitudinalmente 524 alcances aos 4, 6, 8 e 36 meses, sendo analisadas as variáveis mão preferida no alcance e índice de contribuição para os alcances bimanuais. Constatou-se que a mão preferida no alcance no decorrer dos meses foi a direita e que somente aos 6 meses o tamanho dos objetos influenciou a preferência manual: as crianças fizeram preferencialmente alcances com a mão direita para objetos pequenos, e mão esquerda para os grandes. Nos alcances bimanuais, constatou-se que, em geral, a mão que primeiro toca o objeto é a mão mais ativa durante todo o movimento de alcançar. Provavelmente porque a rigidez seja menos visualmente percebida do que o tamanho, só este influencia o alcance aos 6 meses, idade em que o lactente refina o movimento de alcance. O tamanho o influencia aos 6 meses, idade em que o movimento de alcançar se encontra em fase de refinamento: objetos pequenos que exigem maior precisão foram alcançados com a mão direita (mão preferida); e objetos grandes, que não exigem precisão para serem apreendidos, foram alcançados com a mão esquerda.

The purpose of this study was to analyse infants' and toddlers' manual preference in reaching objects of different sizes and rigidity at the ages of 4, 6, 8, and 36 months. Four objects of different size and stiffness were presented to nine healthy infants leaning on a chair at 50º. A total of 524 reaching movements were analysed longitudinally to verify manual preference and the index of contribution of each hand for bimanual reaching. Results showed preference of the right hand for reaching objects; only at the age of 6 months the object size influenced manual preference: infants used preferably the right hand to reach small objects and the left one for large objects. The hand that first touched the object in bimanual reaching was the most active during reaching trajectory. These findings suggest that the size of the object - and not rigidity, which is less visually perceptible - influenced infants' reaching at the age of 6 months, that is, when reaching movement is being refined; small objects, which require more accuracy to be grasped, were reached with the right hand (preferred one)), whereas large objects which do not require accuracy to be grasped were reached with the left hand.

O objetivo foi verificar o efeito de um programa de fisioterapia funcional para crianças com paralisia cerebral, associado a orientações aos pais e/ou cuidadores; e verificar a correlação entre as habilidades funcionais e a assistência do cuidador, utilizando o Inventário de Avaliação Pediátrica de Incapacidade (PEDI). Participaram quatro crianças entre 24 e 43 meses de idade, hemiplégicas, espásticas e nível I no sistema de classificação da função motora ampla (GMFCS). Foram realizadas quatro avaliações - uma antes do início do programa, as demais aos 30, 60 e 90 dias após a primeira -, empregando-se as partes I (Habilidades funcionais) e II (Assistência do cuidador) do PEDI. As crianças foram submetidas a sessões de uma hora de fisioterapia funcional três vezes por semana, durante três meses: duas vezes a sessão era de fisioterapia com base no conceito neuroevolutivo Bobath e uma vez, treino de atividades da vida diária. Também foram dadas orientações por escrito aos pais e/ou cuidadores quanto à assistência à criança, incentivando-os a praticá-la em casa. A análise dos resultados mostrou que, na última avaliação, as crianças obtiveram escores significativamente maiores que na primeira. Foi verificada correlação altamente significativa (r=1,0; p=0,083) entre as partes I e II. O programa de fisioterapia funcional associado às orientações aos pais e/ou cuidadores foi efetivo em melhorar o desempenho funcional de crianças nível I com hemiplegia espástica.

The purpose was to verify the effect of a functional physical therapy program on children with cerebral palsy, associated to guidance to parents and/or caregivers; and to search for correlations between the child's functional abilities and caregivers' assistance, by means of the Pediatric Evaluation Disability Inventory (PEDI). Four hemiplegic, spastic children between 24 and 43 months old, classified at the Gross Motor Function Classification System level I, were submitted to four evaluations, the first prior to program onset, and the others 30, 60, and 90 days after the first one. PEDI parts I (Functional abilities) and II (Caregivers' assistance) were used. Caregivers were provided with written instructions on how to best deliver care at home. The physical therapy program consisted of three weekly 1-hour sessions for three months; two sessions were of physical therapy based on Bobath concept, and one, of daily activities training. The analysis of results showed children obtained a significantly higher score at the last assessment as compared to the first. A high, significant correlation was found between PEDI parts I and II (r=1.0; p=0.083). The functional physical therapy program associated to instructions to caregivers proved thus effective to improve the functional performance of level-I children with spastic hemiplegia.
