Abstract. Marigold (Tagetes erecta) is an Asteraceae plant commonly used as an ornamental and ceremonial flower during the fall season in Mexico. Marigold plants cultivated in the field presented bacterial leaf spot disease symptoms. A bacterial strain that potentially causes spot disease was isolated. The main goal of this research was to classify this bacterium and assess its pathogenicity towards marigold and other plant species. The biochemical profiling identified this strain as Pseudomonas syringae LF2012. The phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed a close relation with Pseudomonas genomospecies. The I-CeuI macro-restriction profile of the chromosomal confirmed its high degree of similarity with distinct P. syringae pathovars. P. syringae LF2012 causes spot disease when inoculated by spray in marigold leaves. Infection assays towards plants from other families (Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Amaranthaceae, Poaceae y Solanaceae) suggested that disease might be limited to marigold plants. Furthermore, this strain causes hypersensitive-like responses in Nicotiana tabacum leaves.

Resumen. El cempasúchil (Tagetes erecta) es una planta asterácea comúnmente utilizada como flor ornamental y ceremonial durante la temporada de otoño en México. Las plantas de cempasúchil cultivadas en el campo presentaron síntomas de la enfermedad de la mancha foliar bacteriana. Se aisló una cepa bacteriana que potencialmente causa la enfermedad de las manchas. El objetivo principal de esta investigación fue clasificar esta bacteria y evaluar su patogenicidad en cempasúchil y otras especies vegetales. El perfil bioquímico identificó esta cepa como Pseudomonas syringae LF2012. El análisis filogenético del gen ARNr 16S reveló una estrecha relación con genomoespecies de Pseudomonas. El perfil de macrorestricción I-CeuI del cromosoma confirmó su alto grado de similitud con distintos patovares de P. syringae. P. syringae LF2012 causa la enfermedad de las manchas cuando se inocula por aspersión en hojas de cempasúchil. Los ensayos de infección de plantas de otras familias (Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Amaranthaceae, Poaceae y Solanaceae) sugirieron que la enfermedad podría limitarse al cempasúchil. Además, esta cepa provoca respuestas de tipo hipersensible en hojas de Nicotiana tabacum.

Abstract Plants produce and emit volatile organic compounds, generally they are mixtures that are composed of terpenes, fatty acid derivatives and aromatic compounds. Volatile organic compounds serve plants for: reproduction, attracting pollinators or seed dispersers, as a defense to repel insects or stop colonization by phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi, to attract natural enemies of herbivores and as intraspecific and interspecific messengers. Plants emit some volatiles especially when the vegetative parts are exposed to abiotic or biotic stimulation. Considering the foregoing, a bibliographic review was carried out, the purpose of which is to present the classification of volatile organic compounds in plants, to describe and indicate the characteristics of the extraction and identification techniques of volatile organic compounds, to present the advances reported in the scientific literature about these compounds induced by insects and their current situation in Mexico.

Resumen Las plantas producen y emiten compuestos orgánicos volátiles, generalmente son mezclas que están compuestas por terpenos, derivados de ácidos grasos y compuestos aromáticos. Los compuestos orgánicos volátiles sirven a las plantas para: reproducción, atraer polinizadores o dispersores de semillas, como defensa para repeler insectos o detener la colonización por bacterias y hongos fitopatógenos, para atraer enemigos naturales de herbívoros y como mensajeros intraespecíficos e interespecíficos. Las plantas emiten algunos volátiles especialmente cuando las partes vegetativas se exponen a estimulo abiótico o biótico. Considerando lo antes expuesto, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica, siendo el objetivo del presente trabajo dar a conocer la clasificación de los compuestos orgánicos volátiles de las plantas, describir y señalar las características de las técnicas de extracción e identificación de los compuestos orgánicos volátiles, presentar los avances reportados en la literatura científica acerca de estos compuestos inducidos por insectos y su situación actual en México.

ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) on the weight gain and carcass characteristics in lambs finished in alfalfa pasture and supplemented with concentrate in pen. A total of 24 Dorper x Pelibuey ram lambs initially weighting 25.0±0.24 kg were divided in two groups (n=12) and fed with 0 or 10 mg/ head/d of ZH for the last 30 d before slaughter. During the experimental period, all lambs were grazed in alfalfa during 8 h/d and supplemented with 450 g/d of concentrate. The ZH did not affect (P>0.05) the live weight. Daily and total weight gains were similar (P>0.05) between both groups. Carcass characteristics and wholesale cut yields were not affected (P>0.05) by ZH. In conclusion, growth and carcass characteristics were not improved by feeding zilpaterol (10 mg/head/d) in finished lambs on alfalfa grassland and supplemented with concentrate.

RESUMEN El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el efecto de clorhidrato de zilpaterol (CZ) sobre la ganancia de peso y las características de la canal en corderos finalizados en pradera de alfalfa y suplementados con concentrado en corral. Un total de 24 corderos machos enteros Dorper x Pelibuey, con peso vivo inicial de 25.0 ± 0.24 kg, fueron divididos en dos grupos (n=12) y alimentados con 0 o 10 mg/cabeza/día de CZ los últimos 30 días antes del sacrificio. Durante el periodo experimental, todos los corderos pastorearon en alfalfa 8 h/día y se suplementaron con 450 g/d de concentrado. El CZ no afectó (P>0.05) el peso vivo. Las ganancias de peso diaria y total fueron similares (P>0.05) entre ambos grupos. Las características de canal y el rendimiento de cortes primarios no fueron afectados (P>0.05) por el CZ. En conclusión, el clorhidrato de zilpaterol a una dosis de 10 mg/cabeza/día no mejoró el crecimiento ni las características de canal en corderos finalizados en pradera de alfalfa y suplementados con concentrado.

Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola is a natural pathogen of members of the Brassicaceae plant family. Using a transposon-based mutagenesis strategy in Pseudomonas syringaepv. maculicola M2 (PsmM2), we conducted a genetic screen to identify mutants that were capable of growing in M9 medium supplemented with a crude extract from the leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana. A mutant containing a transposon insertion in the hrpZ gene (PsmMut8) was unable to infect adult plants from Arabidopsis thaliana or Brassica oleracea, suggesting a loss of pathogenicity. The promotorless cat reporter present in the gene trap was expressed if PsmMut8 was grown in minimal medium (M9) supplemented with the leaf extract but not if grown in normal rich medium (KB). We conducted phylogenetic analysis using hrpAZB genes, showing the classical 5-clade distribution, and nucleotide diversity analysis, showing the putative position for selective pressure in this operon. Our results indicate that the hrpAZB operon from Pseudomonas syringaepv. maculicola M2 is necessary for its pathogenicity and that its diversity would be under host-mediated diversifying selection.
