O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar as alteracoes morfologicas relacionadas com a idade em canais radiculares mesial de primeiros molares inferiores. Cinquenta e seis especimes foram selecionados para este estudo. Os especimes foram distribuidos em quatro grupos etarios (n. 14): a) Grupo de criancas menores de 13 anos, b) grupo de adolescentes (de 14 a 19 anos), c) Grupo de jovens adultos (de 20 a 39 anos ) e d) Grupo de adultos (acima de 40 anos). Apos as extracoes os elementos foram cuidadosamente limpos, esterilizados, identificadas e armazenadas em agua. A fim de melhorar a limpeza, foram colocados numa solucao de hipoclorito de sodio a 1%, durante quatro horas e enxaguados em 10 vol. peroxido de hidrogenio durante 8 horas. Depois, uma tecnica de diafanizacao foi realizada para ilustrar a anatomia do canal radicular. As imagens digitalizadas de todas as amostras foram obtidas atraves da utilizacao de um estereoscopio. Os canais foram visivelmente mais simples em adultos mais velhos: eles foram bem definidas e estreito, por vezes, demasiado estreito. Nucleo de calcificacao nao foi encontrado e havia apenas alguns restos de espacos internucleares. O sistema de canal apareceu mais limpa, mais clara e mais bem definida do que nas outras faixas etarias. Pode-se concluir que ha uma correlacao entre as alteracoes do envelhecimento e morfologicas nos canais radiculares mesial de primeiros molares inferiores.

The aim of this study was to evaluate age-related morphological canal changes in mesial root canals of mandibular first molars of known ages. Fifty-six specimens were selected for this study and distributed into the following four age groups (n. 14): a) Group of children under 13 years, b) Group of adolescents (from 14 to 19 years), c) Group of young adults (from 20 to 39 years) and d) Group of older adults (over 40 years). The specimens were in perfect condition because after extraction they were carefully cleaned, sterilized, identified and stored in water. In order to improve the cleaning, they were placed in 1% sodium hypochlorite solution for four hours and rinsed in 10 vol. hydrogen peroxide for 8 hours. After that, a clearing technique was performed to illustrate root canal anatomy. Digitalized images of all samples were obtained by use of a stereomicroscope. Canals were noticeably simpler in older adults: they were sharply defined and narrow, sometimes too narrow. Calcification nuclei were not found and there were only a few remains of internuclear spaces. The canal system appeared cleaner, clearer and more sharply defined than in the other age groups. It may be concluded that there is a correlation between aging and morphological changes in the mesial root canals of mandibular first molars.

OBJETIVO: Avaliou-se in vitro a resistência à fratura de raízes com pinos metálicos fundidos e de fibra de vidro, variando sua configuração geométrica. METODOLOGIA: Cinquenta incisivos centrais superiores tratados endodonticamente foram incluídos em resina acrílica. Dez receberam apenas preparo coronário (controle) e quarenta tiveram coroas seccionadas e raízes incluídas em resina (deixando 4 mm cervicais). Distribuiu-se os espécimes em 5 grupos: controle, pino metálico cilíndrico, metálico cônico, pino de fibra de vidro cilíndrico e cônico. Submeteram-se os corpos-de-prova a ensaio de compressão, até ocorrer a fratura. RESULTADOS: A ANOVA indicou diferença significante entre os grupos (P<.05) e no teste de Tukey-Kramer´s o controle (867±243 N) apresentou os maiores valores de resistência à fratura, sendo similar ao grupo do pino de fibra cilíndrico (711±180 N). Não houve diferença significante entre os pinos metálicos cilíndricos (435±245 N) ou cônicos (585±164 N) e os de fibra cônicos (453±112 N). Os grupos dos pinos de fibra cilíndricos (711±180 N) e pinos metálicos cônicos (585±164 N) apresentaram valores intermediários e não foram diferentes entre si. CONCLUSÃO: Pinos de fibra de vidro são uma alternativa viável ao pino metálico fundido cilíndrico e cônico. Os pinos de fibra cilíndricos aumentaram a resistência à fratura dos incisivos tratados endodonticamente.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the in vitro fracture resistance of roots with glass-fiber and metal dowels with different designs. METHODS: Fifty-endodontically treated maxillary central incisors were embedded in acrylic resin. Ten of them received only the coronary preparation, and the remaining forty were embedded (except for 4mm of the cervical area) after removing the clinical crowns. Specimens were divided into five groups (n=10): control (teeth with only coronary preparation), cylindrical cast dowel, conical cast dowel, cylindrical glass-fiber dowel and conical glass-fiber dowel. Specimens were subjected to an increasing compressive load (N) until fracture. RESULTS: ANOVA indicated significant difference (P<.05) among the groups, and the Tukey-Kramer´s test identified these differences. The control group (867±243 N) presented the highest values and was statistically similar to cylindrical glass-fiber dowel group (711±180 N). There is no significant difference among the metal dowel cylindrical (435±245 N) or conical (585±164 N) group and conical glass-fiber dowel (453±112 N). Cylindrical glass-fiber dowel (711±180 N) and conical cast dowel and core (585±164 N) groups had intermediate values and did not differ from each other. CONCLUSIONS: Cylindrical glass fiber dowels represent a viable alternative to the cast-metal dowel cylindrical or conical. Cylindrical glass fiber dowels also increase endodontically treated incisors' resistance to fracture.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated in vitro the influence of an eugenol-based sealer (EndoFill) on the retention of stainless steel prefabricated posts cemented with zinc phosphate and resin-based (Panavia F) cements after different periods of root canal obturation, using the pull-out test. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty upper canines were decoronated and the roots were embedded in resin blocks. The specimens were distributed into 3 groups, according to the period elapsed between canal obturation and post cementation: Group I - immediately; Group II - 72 h and Group III - 4 months. The groups were subdivided according to the type of cement used for post cementation: A - zinc phosphate and B - Panavia F. Following the experimental periods, specimens were subjected to pullout test in an Instron machine with application of tensile force at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until post dislodgement. The maximum forces required for post removal were recorded (kN) and means were subjected to statistical analysis by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer test (α=0.001) RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences (p<0.01) between the posts cemented with zinc phosphate cement (0.2112 kN) and Panavia F (0.0501 kN). However, no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were found between the three post cementation periods, regardless of the cement. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that the eugenol-based sealer influenced the tensile strength of the posts cemented with the resin cement, but had no influence on the time waited between root canal obturation and post space preparation/post cementation.

Este estudo avaliou, in vitro, a capacidade de remoção de debris do terço apical de canais radiculares achatados, usando diferentes protocolos de irrigação final. Trinta incisivos centrais mandibulares humanos com a raiz mésio-distal achatada foram preparados usando instrumento rotatório Endo-Flare 25.12 e limas Hero 642 30.06, 35.02, 40.02, irrigadas com 2ml de NaOCl 1% após cada lima. Os espécimes foram aleatoriamente distribuídos em cinco grupos de acordo com a irrigação final dos canais radiculares: Grupo I: 10 mL de água destilada (controle), Grupo II: 10 mL de NaOCl a 1% por 8 min, Grupo III: 2 mL de NaOCl a 1% por 2 min (repetidos 4 vezes), Grupo IV: 10 mL de NaOCl 2,5% por 8 min e Grupo V: 10 mL de NaOCl 2,5% por 2 min (repetido 4 vezes). Os terços apicais dos espécimes foram submetidos a processamento histológico de rotina e cortes transversais com 6 μm de espessura foram obtidos e corados com hematoxilina e eosina. Os espécimes foram analisados em microscopia óptica com aumento final de 40 X e as imagens submetidas à análise morfométrica com a utilização do software Scion Image. A análise de variância evidenciou não haver diferença estatística (p>0,05) entre os grupos GI (2,39 ± 3,59), GII (2,91 ± 2,21), GIII (0,73 ± 1,36), GIV (0,95 ± 0,84) e GV (0,51 ± 0,22). Conclui-se que os protocolos de irrigação final utilizando a seringa Luer apresentaram comportamentos semelhantes na remoção de debris do terço apical de canais radiculares achatados.

This study evaluated in vitro the capacity of debris removal from the apical third of flattened root canals, using different final irrigation protocols. Thirty human mandibular central incisors with a mesiodistal flattened root were prepared using rotary instrumentation by Endo-Flare 25.12 and Hero 642 30.06, 35.02, 40.02 files, irrigated with 2 mL of 1% NaOCl after each file. The specimens were randomly distributed into 5 groups according to the final irrigation of root canals: Group I: 10 mL of distilled water (control), Group II: 10 mL of 1% NaOCl for 8 min, Group III: 2 mL of 1% NaOCl for 2 min (repeated 4 times), Group IV: 10 mL of 2.5% NaOCl for 8 min, and Group V: 10 mL of 2.5% NaOCl for 2 min (repeated 4 times). The apical thirds of the specimens were subjected to histological processing and 6-μm cross-sections were obtained and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The specimens were examined under optical microscopy at ×40 magnification and the images were subjected to morphometric analysis using the Scion image-analysis software. The total area of root canal and the area with debris were measured in square millimeters. Analysis of variance showed no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) among the groups GI (2.39 ± 3.59), GII (2.91 ± 2.21), GIII (0.73 ± 1.36), GIV (0.95 ± 0.84) and GV (0.51 ± 0.22). In conclusion, the final irrigation protocols evaluated in this study using the Luer syringe presented similar performance in the removal of debris from the apical third of flattened root canals.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar in vitro a retenção de pinos intra-radiculares variando-se a técnica de aplicação do agente adesivo e do cimento resinoso dual no espaço protético preparado para a recepção do pino. Sessenta caninos superiores tratados endodonticamente tiveram as coroas descartadas e as raízes incluídas em resina acrílica. Os espaços protéticos foram preparados com broca de Largo acionada por micromotor acoplado a um paralelômetro, a fim de manter constantes o comprimento e diâmetro dos pinos intra-radiculares e o paralelismo dos preparos após a fundição. Os pinos foram divididos aleatoriamente em 2 grupos (n = 30) conforme a técnica de aplicação do agente adesivo: com "microbrush" ou com pincel (controle). Cada grupo foi subdividido em três subgrupos (n = 10) segundo a técnica de aplicação do agente cimentante: com o próprio pino, com broca de lentulo previamente ao posicionamento do pino ou associação dos dois modos. Após 72 horas do processo de cimentação, os pinos foram tracionados pela Máquina Universal de Ensaios (Instron 4444) à velocidade de 1 mm/min. Os resultados mostraram diferença estatística significante (p < 0,001) entre as técnicas de aplicação do agente adesivo com "microbrush" (0,1740 ± 0,04 kN) e pincel (0,1369 ± 0,04 kN). Em relação à técnica de aplicação do cimento no interior do espaço protético, a da associação entre lentulo e pino (0,1787 ± 0,03 kN) foi estatisticamente diferente (p < 0,001) das do lentulo (0,1461 ± 0,065 kN) e do pino (0,1416 ± 0,03 kN) isoladamente. As interações entre as técnicas de aplicação do agente adesivo e do agente cimentante apresentaram diferença estatística (p < 0,001). Concluiu-se que as interações entre as técnicas de aplicação do agente adesivo com "microbrush" e aplicação do agente cimentante com lentulo (0,1961 ± 0,04 kN) e com lentulo e pino associados (0,1911 ± 0,02 kN) propiciaram os maiores valores da força de tração.

This study evaluated in vitro the retention of intracanal cast posts cemented with dual-cure resin varying the application method of the primer/adhesive solution and luting agent in the prosthetic space prepared to receive the posts. Sixty endodontically treated maxillary canines had their crowns discarded, and their roots were embedded in acrylic resin. The prosthetic spaces were prepared with Largo burs mounted on a low-speed handpiece coupled to a parallelometer in order to maintain length and diameter of intraradicular posts constant and to guarantee that the preparations were parallel after casting. Two groups (n = 30) were randomly formed according to the device used to apply the adhesive system: microbrush or standard bristle brush (control). Each group was divided into 3 subgroups (n = 10) according to the technique used to place the luting agent into the root canal: using only a lentulo spiral before setting the post, applying it onto the post surface, or combining both methods. After 72 hours, the tensile force required to dislodge each post was determined by a universal testing machine (Instron 4444) set at a speed of 1 mm/min. The results indicated that the use of the microbrush yielded higher bond strength values (0.1740 ± 0.04 kN) than those recorded for the bristle brush tip (0.1369 ± 0.04 kN, p < 0.001). Bonferroni's test demonstrated a higher retention (p < 0.001) in radicular post cemented with the technique that combined both methods (lentulo + post: 0.1787 ± 0.03 kN) than that obtained with lentulo (0.1461 ± 0.065 kN) or post (0.1416 ± 0.03 kN) alone. The interactions between the adhesive system and luting agent application techniques presented statistical difference (p < 0.001). It was concluded that the best performance in terms of tensile strength among the tested conditions was obtained when the adhesive system was applied with a microbrush and the luting agent was taken into the root canal with lentulo spirals alone (0.1961 ± 0.04 kN) and combining both methods (lentulo + post: 0.1911 ± 0.02 kN).

Este estudo in vitro comparou a resistência à remoção por tração de núcleos metálicos fundidos em liga de Cu-Al (Goldent-LA) cilíndricos, jateados, de comprimento constante igual a 9 mm, cimentados com cimento de fosfato de zinco e com três diferentes diâmetros: 0,9 mm, 1,3 mm e 1,7 mm. Trinta e seis caninos superiores hígidos tiveram suas coroas seccionadas, sendo as raízes incluídas em blocos de resina acrílica, e os canais, tratados endodonticamente. Os dentes foram divididos em três grupos para serem preparados e padronizados com o auxílio de um paralelômetro com as seguintes brocas: Grupo 1 - Largo nº 2; Grupo 2 - Largo nº 4; Grupo 3 - Largo nº 6. Os núcleos foram moldados com resina acrílica ativada quimicamente e, após a fundição, foram jateados e tiveram as suas dimensões conferidas com um paquímetro digital. Após a cimentação, os corpos-de-prova foram armazenados em água destilada durante 7 dias, em estufa a 37ºC e, posteriormente, submetidos a teste de tração em uma máquina universal de ensaios Instron 4444. Com a análise estatística dos resultados, pôde-se concluir que não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos testados. A variação do diâmetro em núcleos cilíndricos jateados cimentados com fosfato de zinco não afetou a resistência à remoção.

This study compared the resistance to removal by traction of abraded cylindrical metal cast posts of Cu-Al (Goldent-LA). The posts had constant length (9 mm) and three different diameters (0.9, 1.3 and 1.7 mm), and were cemented with zinc phosphate cement. The crowns of 36 sound maxillary canines were sectioned, the roots were immersed in resin blocks and the root canals were endodontically treated. The teeth were divided into three groups to be prepared and standardized with the use of a parallelometer with the following burs: Group 1 - Largo n. 2; Group 2 - Largo n. 4; Group 3 - Largo n. 6. The posts were molded with chemically activated resin and after casting they were abraded and their dimensions were confirmed with a digital caliper. After cementation of the posts in the prepared root canals, the samples were kept at 37ºC in distilled water for 7 days and subsequently submitted to the traction test in a universal testing machine (Instron 4444). The results showed no statistical difference between the groups. Diameter variation (0.9 mm, 1.3 mm and 1.7 mm) in abraded cylindrical posts cemented with zinc phosphate did not affect resistance to removal.
