Abstract Among the different handling techniques in aquaculture, the use of anesthetics has had a growing interest focused on guaranteeing animal welfare, and reducing possible stress situations during general handling. The aim of this study was to present the use of eugenol and lidocaine with non-invasive anesthesia procedures in Dormitator latifrons, in which the different stages of anesthesia (induction and recovery) were determined. One hundred and twenty healthy fish of average weight of 73.59 ± 13.53 g and standard length of 17 ± 1.36 cm were used. The experimental fish were subjected to fasting for 24 h prior to the tests. Five fish were subjected to eugenol (25, 50, 100, and 200 µL/L), and lidocaine (100, 200, 300, and 400 mg/L), in triplicate. The time to reach deep and recovery anesthesia were recorded and the data analyzed using ANOVA (α= 0.05). Organisms exposed to anesthetics evidenced early episodes of fast, short-distance swimming (initial hyperactivity) for short periods of time. Survival was 100% with both compounds and concentrations. Fish exposed to a eugenol concentration of 200 µL/L had longer anesthesia times and took longer time to recover (P<0.05). The most effective concentrations for eugenol and lidocaine were of 200 µL/L and 400 µL/L in juvenile fish, promoting rapid inductions, without compromising the conditions for the recovery of the fish. This work provides practical information for handling and transportation D. latiforns with the least possible stress and ensuring animal welfare.

Resumo Dentre as diferentes técnicas de manejo na aquicultura, o uso de anestésicos tem despertado interesse crescente voltado para a garantia do bem-estar animal, reduzindo possíveis situações de estresse durante o manejo geral. O objetivo deste estudo foi apresentar o uso de eugenol e lidocaína com procedimentos anestésicos não invasivos em Dormitator latifrons, nos quais foram determinadas as diferentes etapas da anestesia (indução e recuperação). Foram utilizados 120 peixes saudáveis, com peso médio de 73,59 ± 13,53 g e 17 ± 1,36 cm de comprimento, em jejum de 24 horas antes dos testes. Cinco peixes foram submetidos a eugenol (25, 50, 100 e 200 µL/L) e lidocaína (100, 200, 300 e 400 mg/L), em triplicata. O tempo para atingir a anestesia profunda e de recuperação foi registrado, os dados foram analisados com ANOVA (α= 0,05). Organismos expostos a anestésicos evidenciaram episódios precoces de nado rápido de curta distância (hiperatividade inicial) por curtos períodos de tempo. A sobrevivência atinge 100% com ambos compostos e concentrações. Peixes expostos a uma concentração de eugenol de 200 µL/L tiveram tempos de anestesia mais longos e demoraram mais para se recuperar (P<0,05). As concentrações mais efetivas para eugenol e lidocaína foram de 200 µL/L e 400 µL/L em peixes juvenis, promovendo induções rápidas, sem comprometer as condições de recuperação dos peixes. Este trabalho fornece informações práticas para o manejo e transporte de D. latifrons com o mínimo de estresse possível e garantindo o bem-estar animal.

Resumen Introducción: El cáncer de mama (CaMa) es el tipo de cáncer con una alta tasa de mortalidad y su diagnóstico oportuno, permitiría una mayor probabilidad de sobrevivencia. Actualmente hay diversos procedimientos para su detección, sin embargo, una posible alternativa no invasiva mediante la detección de compuestos orgánicos volátiles (COV) en el aliento (exhalómica) de las pacientes se está explorando. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática (hasta junio de 2022) de publicaciones sobre la detección mediante cromatografía de gases de COV en el aliento de mujeres con mama sana, con lesiones benignas o invasoras y en líneas celulares, para buscar potenciales oncometabolitos. Resultados: Existe una gran heterogeneidad de COV (principalmente alcanos) en las pacientes analizadas, además de diferencias entre las distintas poblaciones. Discusión: Aun cuando hay detección de COV exhalados, es necesario un mayor número de estudios. De manera interesante, un grupo de COV son compartidos con otros tipos de cáncer. Conclusiones: Al momento, no se conoce el perfil de COV exhalados asociados con certeza al paciente de CaMa.

Abstract Background: Breast cancer (BrCa) present a highest mortality rate, and its early diagnosis could improve the survival of the patient. At present, there are leading tests used for BrCa detection, but a novel alternative, non-invasive test, such as breath analysis (exhalomic) of volatile organic compounds (VOC) are being taken into consideration. Methods: A systematic review (until June 2022) about VOC detection from breath by using gas chromatography was performed. The goal was to identify probable oncometabolites in the gas sample from healthy breast tissue women, benign or malignant lesions, and including cultured cell lines. Results: There are a complex heterogeneity of exhaled VOC mainly alkanes in the analyzed samples, and between the different populations. Discussion: Even when exhaled VOC are detected, some more works should be performed to have conclusions. Interestingly some VOC are shared with other cancer types. Conclusions: Nowadays, there is no specific BrCa VOC-profile associated for BrCa or benign lesions diagnosis.

ABSTRACT Legacy and Duke are the main blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cultivars grown in Chile, with 32.8% of the total Chilean cultivated area with this fruit. The market demands fruit firmness, size, weight, and quality attributes, which are improved by some agronomic management practices such as winter pruning. The present study evaluated the effect on blueberry quality attributes and fruit yield of five fruit bud load levels, regulated by winter pruning during two consecutive seasons, on ʻLegacyʼ and ʻDukeʼ. The study was conducted in three commercial orchards under different soil conditions (Inceptisol, Andisol, and Entisol) in south-central Chile. Results indicated that there were differences in fruit load treatments between seasons, orchards, load levels, and week of harvest (first or second). Reducing the fruit bud load by winter pruning improved quality attributes of fruit firmness, size and weight, but negatively affected production per plant. We found in two seasons that pruning 60% of the fruit bud load level had the highest values for fruit firmness, size, and weight in both blueberry cultivars, but the production was 70% and 86% of the potential in ‘Duke’ and ‘Legacy’, respectively.

Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate depression in Paraguayan health care workers who are in contact with COVID-19 patients, as well as symptoms associated with it. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. A total of 130 Paraguayan health professionals participated by means of purposive sampling. The HPQ-9 scale (Patient Health Questionnaire) was used. It is an instrument composed of 9 items related to depressive symptomatology. The mean score obtained by the healthcare workers in the PHQ-9 test was 6.56, which is interpreted as “mild or moderate depression”. In the somatic variables, there was a feeling of tiredness (83.1%), especially in the nurses (p=,016). Eating disorders were reported by 58.5% and sleep difficulties by 56.2%. In relation to personality disorders, 47.7% showed depressive symptoms in the last few days, especially among women. 37.7% felt that they had failed in the last few days. 37.7% felt they were failures, 11.5% at some time had suicidal thoughts, 58.4% had difficulties in concentrating on activities and 41.6% were affected in their social relationships. The binary logistic regression analysis showed that 27.6% of the medical professionals and 26.3% of the nursing professionals had thought about leaving the profession. Further study of this type is required to design effective interventions for protection and support.

Resumen: La pandemia COVID-19 ha supuesto un gran desafío para los sistemas de salud y su personal en todo el mundo. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la depresión en sanitarios paraguayos que están en contacto con pacientes COVID-19, así como síntomas asociados a la misma. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal. Participaron 130 profesionales paraguayos en el área de la salud mediante muestreo intencional. Se empleó la escala HPQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire). Se trata de un instrumento compuesto por 9 ítems relacionados con sintomatología depresiva. La puntuación media obtenida por los sanitarios, en la prueba PHQ-9, fue de 6,56, lo que se interpreta como “depresión leve o moderada”. En las variables de tipo somático, se presentó sensación de cansancio (83,1%), especialmente, en los enfermeros/as (p= ,016). El 58,5% manifestó alteraciones en la alimentación y el 56,2% dificultades en el sueño. En relación con trastornos de personalidad, el 47,7% evidenció síntomas depresivos en los últimos días, en especial las mujeres. El 37,7% se sintió fracasado, el 11,5% en algún momento tuvo ideas suicidas, el 58,4% dificultades en la concentración para actividades y el 41,6% vio afectadas sus relacione sociales. El análisis de regresión logística binaria percibió que el 27,6% de los profesionales en medicina y el 26,3% de enfermería había pensado en abandonar la profesión. Se requiere profundizar en este tipo de estudio para diseñar intervenciones eficaces de protección y ayuda.

ABSTRACT: The human being in the course of evolution has changed the perception of food, leaving aside the consumption of meat and its derivatives due to ethical and moral factors, where it is known that diet has great relevance in general health, being a factor of risk for the appearance of various diseases, which is why saliva has been used as a diagnostic tool. To describe and compare the Mediterranean Diet index according to salivary pH in female dentistry students between 20 and 30 years old. Comparative cross-sectional descriptive study. Seventeen adult women selected by non-probabilistic criteria participated in the Dentistry career, who were evaluated in their Mediterranean Diet index and salivary pH. Student's T test for independent samples and Mann-Whitney U test were applied to compare characteristics between groups based on salivary pH. There are significant differences between groups for the frequency of consumption of whole grains (p = 0.026), lean meats (p = 0.021) and salivary pH (p < 0.001). There is a predominance towards low adherence to a Mediterranean diet, with significant differences in the frequency of consumption of whole grains and lean meats, the consumption of these being an indicator of oral risk determined by pH.

RESUMEN: El ser humano en el transcurso de la evolución ha cambiado la percepción de la alimentación dejando de lado el consumo de carne y sus derivados por factores éticos y morales, donde se sabe la dieta tiene gran relevancia en la salud general, siendo un factor de riesgo para la aparición de diversas enfermedades motivo por cual la saliva se ha utilizado como instrumento de diagnóstico Describir y comparar el índice de Dieta mediterránea según pH salival en mujeres estudiantes de Odontología de entre 20 a 30 años. Estudio descriptivo transversal comparativo. Participaron 17 mujeres adultas seleccionadas por criterio no probabilístico en la carrera de Odontología, quienes fueron evaluadas en su índice de Dieta mediterránea y pH salival. Se aplicó la prueba T de Student para muestras independientes y U Mann-Whitney para comparar características entre grupos en función del pH salival. Existen diferencias significativas entre grupos para la frecuencia de consumo de cereales integrales (p = 0,026), carnes magras (p = 0,021) y pH salival (p < 0,001). Existe un predominio hacia la baja adherencia a una dieta mediterránea, existiendo diferencias significativas en la frecuencia de consumo de cereales integrales y carnes magras, siendo el consumo de estos un indicador del riesgo de la cavidad oral determinado por pH.

RESUMEN Objetivos. Evaluar las comorbilidades asociadas a la mortalidad en pacientes adultos hospitalizados por COVID-19 de diferentes grupos de edad en hospitales de Lima y Callao. Materiales y métodos. En este estudio de cohorte retrospectiva analizamos datos de pacientes adultos hospitalizados por COVID-19, notificados al Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia Epidemiológica del Ministerio de Salud de Perú de marzo a octubre del 2020. Se estimaron riesgos relativos con intervalos de confianza al 95% mediante modelos de regresión de Poisson con varianza robusta para evaluar las comorbilidades asociadas a la mortalidad por grupos de edad: jóvenes (18-29 años), adultos (30-59 años) y mayores (≥60 años). Resultados. Se incluyeron 2366 jóvenes, 23781 adultos y 25356 adultos mayores en el análisis. Los adultos mayores presentaron la mortalidad más alta (63,7%) en comparación con adultos (27,1%) y jóvenes (8,5%). Independientemente del grupo de edad, la presencia de enfermedad neurológica, enfermedad renal, enfermedad hepática y cáncer se asoció a un mayor riesgo de mortalidad. Adicionalmente, la enfermedad cardiovascular fue también un factor de riesgo en los jóvenes; la obesidad, la diabetes, la enfermedad cardiovascular, la enfermedad pulmonar crónica y la inmunodeficiencia en los adultos; y la obesidad y la enfermedad pulmonar crónica en los mayores. Conclusiones: Independientemente de los grupos de edad, los individuos con enfermedad neurológica crónica, enfermedad renal, enfermedad hepática y cáncer tendrían un alto riesgo de morir por la COVID-19.

Results. We included 2366 young adults, 23,781 adults and 25,356 older adults. Older adults had the highest mortality (63.7%) compared to adults (27.1%) and young adults (8.5%). Regardless of age group, the presence of neurological disease, renal disease, liver disease, and cancer was associated with an increased risk of mortality. Additionally, cardiovascular disease was also a risk factor in young adults; obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, and immunodeficiency in adults; and obesity and chronic lung disease in the elderly. Conclusions. Regardless of age groups, individuals with chronic neurologic disease, renal disease, liver disease, and cancer were at high risk of death from COVID-19.

Resumen La inteligencia artificial (IA) tiene el potencial de cambiar muchos aspectos de la práctica sanitaria. La discriminación y la clasificación de imágenes tiene muchas aplicaciones dentro de la medicina. Se han desarrollado algoritmos de aprendizaje automático y redes neuronales complicadas para entrenar a una computadora a diferenciar las áreas normales de las anormales. El aprendizaje automático es una forma de IA que permite que la plataforma mejore sin ser programada. El diagnóstico asistido por computadora (CAD) se basa en latencia, que es el tiempo entre la imagen capturada y cuando es mostrada en la pantalla. La endoscopia asistida por IA puede incrementar la tasa de detección al identificar lesiones obviadas. Un sistema CAD de IA debe ser sensible, específico, con interfaces fáciles de usar, y proporcionar resultados rápidos sin prolongar sustancialmente los procedimientos. La IA tiene el potencial de ayudar tanto a endoscopistas entrenados como a los que están en entrenamiento. En vez de ser un sustituto para una técnica de alta calidad, deberá servir como un complemento de las buenas prácticas. La IA ha sido evaluada en tres escenarios clínicos en las neoplasias colónicas: la detección de pólipos, su caracterización (adenomatosos vs. no adenomatosos) y la predicción de cáncer invasor dentro de una lesión polipoide.

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to change many aspects of healthcare practice. Image discrimination and classification has many applications within medicine. Machine learning algorithms and complicated neural networks have been developed to train a computer to differentiate between normal and abnormal areas. Machine learning is a form of AI that allows the platform to improve without being programmed. Computer Assisted Diagnosis (CAD) is based on latency, which is the time between the captured image and when it is displayed on the screen. AI-assisted endoscopy can increase the detection rate by identifying missed lesions. An AI CAD system must be responsive, specific, with easy-to-use interfaces, and provide fast results without substantially prolonging procedures. AI has the potential to help both, trained and trainee endoscopists. Rather than being a substitute for high-quality technique, it should serve as a complement to good practice. AI has been evaluated in three clinical scenarios in colonic neoplasms: the detection of polyps, their characterization (adenomatous vs. non-adenomatous) and the prediction of invasive cancer within a polypoid lesion.

Abstract Background: Since the beginning of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, patients with chronic kidney disease vulnerable to suffering more severe COVID-19 disease and worse outcomes have been identified Objectives: Our study's aim was to determine the incidence, characteristics, and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients of hemodialysis (HD) units in Mexico and to describe the availability of confirmatory testing Methods: This study was multicentric study of 19 HD units, conducted between March 2020 and March 2021 Results: From a total of 5779 patients, 955 (16.5%) cases of suspicious COVID-19 were detected; a SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test was done in only 50.6% of patients. Forty-five percentages were hospitalized and 6% required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). There was no significant difference in mortality between confirmed (131/483) and suspicious (124/472) cases (p = 0.74). The percentage of patients in need of hospitalization, IMV, and deceased was greater than in the rest of the study population Conclusions: The study revealed that 49.4% of the cases were not confirmed, a worrisome observation given that this is a highly vulnerable population (higher probability of contagion and worse outcomes), in which 100% of patients should have a confirmatory test

Abstract Background: A high incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) has been reported in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in critical care units and those undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). The introduction of dexamethasone (DXM) as treatment for severe COVID-19 has improved mortality, but its effects in other organs remain under study. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between DXM and AKI in COVID-19. Methods: In this prospective observational cohort study, we evaluated the incidence of AKI in critically ill COVID-19 patients undergoing mechanical ventilation, and the association of DXM treatment with the incidence, severity, and outcomes of AKI. The association between DXM treatment and AKI was evaluated by multivariable logistic regression. The association of the combination of DXM treatment and AKI on mortality was evaluated by Cox-regression analysis. Results: We included 552 patients. AKI was diagnosed in 311 (56%), of which 196 (63%) corresponded to severe (stage 2 or 3) AKI, and 46 (14.8%) received kidney replacement therapy. Two hundred and sixty-seven (48%) patients were treated with DXM. This treatment was associated to lower incidence of AKI (Odds Radio 0.34, 95% Confidence intervals [CI] 0.22-0.52, p < 0.001) after adjusting for age, body mass index, laboratory parameters, SOFA score, and vasopressor use. DXM treatment significantly reduced mortality in patients with severe AKI (HR 0.63, 95%CI 0.41-0.96, p = 0.032). Conclusions: The incidence of AKI is high in COVID-19 patients under IMV. DXM treatment is associated with a lower incidence of AKI and a lower mortality in the group with severe AKI.

ABSTRACT Species associations in a pasture are frequent and include the harmonious and balanced interrelation between two or more grasses and legumes. Legumes not only increase the nutritional value of the associated grass, but are also capable of increasing the dry matter production with a more uniform seasonal distribution and less inter-annual variability. That is why the objective is to evaluate the consociation Adesmia bicolor "Babosita" (Fam. Leguminosae) with Festuca arundinacea "Tall fescue" (Fam. Poaceae). Eight treatments were applied resulting from the combination of two proportions of legume vs. grass, the two pure cultures and two transplant arrangements. Throughout one year, the coverage percentage of both species, weeds and bare soil, morphological characters of A. bicolor, and carbohydrate mobilization dynamics in both species were estimated. When A. bicolor and F. arundinacea are associated, they are able to grow and remain stable during the second year since implantation. Both species together provide coverage to the soil, growing in a complementary way in space and time. Although a negative effect on the height, number of stolons and number of buds.m -2 of A. bicolor is detected when it grows associated with F. arundinacea, the sum of the contributions of each species could increase the total production of the mixture. The dynamics of carbohydrate mobilization in A. bicolor is slightly affected by the association with F. arundinacea, while that of the latter species is not affected. There are no significant differences between the two transplant ratios, as well as between the two transplant arrangements.

RESUMEN Las asociaciones de especies en una pastura son cada vez más frecuentes y comprenden la interrelación armónica y equilibrada entre dos o más gramíneas y leguminosas. Las leguminosas no sólo incrementan el valor nutritivo de la gramínea asociada, sino que además son capaces de aumentar la producción de materia seca en las praderas con una distribución estacional más uniforme y menor variabilidad interanual. Es por ello que se plantea como objetivo evaluar la consociación Adesmia bicolor "Babosita" (Fam. Leguminosas) con Festuca arundinacea "Festuca alta" (Fam. Poáceas). Se aplicaron ocho tratamientos resultantes de la combinación de dos proporciones de leguminosa vs. gramínea, los dos cultivos puros y dos arreglos de trasplantes. A lo largo de un año se estimó el porcentaje de cobertura de ambas especies, malezas y suelo desnudo; los caracteres morfológicos de A. bicolor y la dinámica de movilización de carbohidratos totales en ambas especies. La consociación A. bicolor-F. arundinacea es capaz de desarrollarse y mantenerse estable durante el segundo año desde la implantación del ensayo. Ambas especies proporcionan cobertura al suelo, creciendo en forma complementaria tanto en el espacio como en el tiempo. Se observa un efecto negativo sobre la altura, número de estolones y número de yemas.m-2 de A. bicolor cuando crece consociada con F. arundinacea, mientras que la morfología foliar no registra diferencias entre tratamientos. La dinámica de movilización de carbohidratos totales en A. bicolor es ligeramente afectada por la consociación con F. arundinacea, mientras que la de esta última especie no presenta diferencias con respecto al cultivo puro. No se observan diferencias en la mayoría de las variables al comparar las dos proporciones de trasplante, como tampoco entre los dos arreglos de trasplante.

Resumo O objetivo da aquicultura de Galaxias maculatus é produzir milhões de ovos. As fêmeas selvagens são pequenas (2 g) e têm maturidade sexual rápida e fecundidade média baixa (500 ovos/fêmea), necessitando de peixes maiores e com fecundidade superior. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar experimentalmente o efeito dos níveis de proteínas, lipídios e energia da dieta sobre o aumento de peso em adultos. Cinco experimentos independentes foram realizados em diferentes períodos sequenciais de tempo no incubatório UCT, Chile. Os espécimes foram obtidos a partir de: a) capturas de espécimes de retorno do mar cristalino no estuário de Tolten (4-6 cm, 0,3-0,4 g); b) peixes de cultura em incubatório. Os peixes foram alimentados à mão ad libitum. Nos experimentos de 1 a 4, dietas peletizadas foram preparadas com três a cinco níveis de proteína (tratamentos 27 a 57%), tamanho do crumble, três repetições de tanques de fibra de 100 L. No experimento 5, o efeito de dois níveis de lipídios (8 e 21%) foi avaliado com dieta comercial isoproteica crumble 1 de Salmon Nutra Starter extrusada a 63%, replicada em quatro tanques. Os resultados mostram: uma tendência ao aumento de peso em todos os tamanhos, com um aumento do nível de proteína na dieta peletizada; um crescimento adulto máximo com uma dieta contendo um mínimo de 37% de proteína bruta, com 40% do valor ideal; uma porcentagem maior de proteína na dieta ou crescimento em peso com menor taxa de conversão alimentar. A taxa de conversão alimentar na dieta extrusada chega a 0,5, e na peletizada varia de 0,7 a 1,5. Peixes de 0,6 g alimentados com 63% de proteína e dieta comercial extrusada com dois níveis lipídicos diferentes (8 e 21%; 20,40 e 23,84 MJ kg-1; PE / TE 0,62 e 0,71) aumentaram de peso no primeiro mês em 67 e 105% cada, respectivamente. Foi estabelecido que dietas de alta energia com níveis ótimos de proteínas e lipídios são uma boa solução de curto prazo para obter G. maculatus de peso mais alto.

Abstract Galaxias maculatus aquaculture objectives is to produce millions of eggs. Wild females are small (2 g), have quick sexual maturity and low mean fecundity (500 eggs/female), requiring larger fishes with higher fecundity. This study aim is to evaluate experimentally the effect of the levels of protein, lipid and dietary energy on weight increases in adults. Five independent experiments were performed at different sequential time periods at the UCT hatchery, Chile. Specimens were obtained from a) Crystalline sea return specimen catches in the Tolten estuary (4 -6 cm, 0.3-0.4 g.). b) Hatchery cultured fish. Fish were fed by hand ad libitum. In experiments 1 to 4, pelleted diets were prepared with 3 to 5 levels of protein (treatments 27 up to 57%), crumble size, three 100 L fibre ponds replicates. In experiment 5 the effect of two lipid levels (8 and 21%) was evaluated with commercial extruded Salmon Nutra Starter isoproteic crumble 1 diet at 63%, replicated in 4 ponds. The results show: A tendency to increased weight in all sizes with an increased protein level in the pelleted diet.A maximal adult growth is obtained with a diet containing a minimum of 37% crude protein, with 40% the optimal value. A higher % protein in the diet or growth in weight lower feed conversion ratio. The feed conversion ratio in the extruded diet reaches up to 0.5 and in the pelleted vary from 0.7 to 1.5. Fish 0.6 g fed with 63% protein, extruded commercial diet with two different lipid levels (8 and 21%, 20.40 and 23.84 MJ kg-1, PE/TE 0.62 and 0.71) increased weight the first month 67 and 105% each. It has been established that high-energy diets with optimal levels of protein and lipid are a good short-term solution to obtain G. maculatus of higher weight.

Abstract Background Satellite cells are tissue-specific stem cells primarily responsible for the regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle. Satellite cell function and maintenance are regulated by extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms, including the ubiquitin–proteasome system, which is key for maintaining protein homeostasis. In this context, it has been shown that ubiquitin-ligase NEDD4-1 targets the transcription factor PAX7 for proteasome-dependent degradation, promoting muscle differentiation in vitro. Nonetheless, whether NEDD4-1 is required for satellite cell function in regenerating muscle remains to be determined. Results Using conditional gene ablation, we show that NEDD4-1 loss, specifically in the satellite cell population, impairs muscle regeneration resulting in a significant reduction of whole-muscle size. At the cellular level, NEDD4-1-null muscle progenitors exhibit a significant decrease in the ability to proliferate and differentiate, contributing to the formation of myofibers with reduced diameter. Conclusions These results indicate that NEDD4-1 expression is critical for proper muscle regeneration in vivo and suggest that it may control satellite cell function at multiple levels.

Resumen La sífilis es causada por Treponema pallidum, es reconocida por la variedad de sus manifestaciones clínicas; compromete el sistema nervioso, tegumentario y cardiovascular. Las alteraciones cardiovasculares ocurren en 70% de los casos con sífilis no tratada, el 71% de las aortitis sifilíticas desarrollan aneurismas aórticos y la complicación más frecuente es la insuficiencia aórtica. El tratamiento va dirigido a la enfermedad subyacente, con manejo antibiótico para la sífilis terciaria y las complicaciones tromboembólicas y si requiere reparación quirúrgica. Presentamos un caso poco frecuente de un paciente diagnosticado de infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana y complicaciones cardiovasculares típicas de la sífilis terciaria, que precisó tratamiento médico y quirúrgico, que fue exitoso. Destacamos la pericia clínica de los profesionales de nuestra institución para diagnosticar e identificar las complicaciones cardiovasculares de la sífilis terciaria.

Abstract Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum and is recognized by the variety of its clinical manifestations; it involves the nervous, integumentary and cardiovascular systems. Cardiovascular alterations occur in 70% of cases with untreated syphilis, 71% of syphilitic aortitis develop aortic aneurysms and the most frequent complication is aortic insufficiency. Treatment is directed at the underlying disease, with antibiotic treatment for tertiary syphilis and thromboembolic complications and if necessary surgical repair. We present a rare case of a patient diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus infection and cardiovascular complications typical of tertiary syphilis, who required medical and surgical treatment, which was successful. We highlight the clinical experience of our institution's professionals in the diagnosis and identification of cardiovascular complications of tertiary syphilis.

As alterações cardiovasculares ocorrem em 70% dos casos de sífilis não tratada, 71% dos casos de aortite sifilítica desenvolvem aneurismas aórticos e a complicação mais frequente é a insuficiência aórtica. O tratamento é direcionado para a doença subjacente, com tratamento antibiótico para sífilis terciária e complicações tromboembólicas e, se necessário, reparo cirúrgico. Apresentamos um caso raro de um paciente diagnosticado com infecção pelo vírus da imunodeficiência humana e complicações cardiovasculares típicas da sífilis terciária, que precisou de tratamento médico e cirúrgico, que foi bem-sucedido. Abstract Background: Phonotimpus pennimani (Araneae, Phrurolithidae) is a small-sized (3-5 mm) spider endemic to the Tacaná volcano in Chiapas, Mexico, where it is found in soil litter of cloud forests and coffee plantations. Its venom composition has so far not been investigated, partly because it is not a species of medical significance. However, it does have an important impact on the arthropod populations of its natural habitat. Methods: Specimens were collected in Southeastern Mexico (Chiapas) and identified taxonomically by morphological characteristics. A partial sequence from the mitochondrial gene coxI was amplified. Sequencing on the Illumina platform of a transcriptome library constructed from 12 adult specimens revealed 25 toxin or toxin-like genes. Transcripts were validated (RT-qPCR) by assessing the differential expression of the toxin-like PpenTox1 transcript and normalising with housekeeping genes. Results: Analysis of the coxI-gene revealed a similarity to other species of the family Phrurolithidae. Transcriptome analysis also revealed similarity with venom components of species from the families Ctenidae, Lycosidae, and Sicariidae. Expression of the toxin-like PpenTox1 gene was different for each developmental stage (juvenile or adult) and also for both sexes (female or male). Additionally, a partial sequence was obtained for the toxin-like PpenTox1 from DNA. Conclusion: Data from the amplification of the mitochondrial coxI gene confirmed that P. pennimani belongs to the family Phrurolithidae. New genes and transcripts coding for venom components were identified.
