No Nordeste Paraense alguns agricultores familiares têm implantado pequenas áreas de pastagens e manejado pequenos rebanhos com o objetivo de aplicar eventuais ganhos obtidos com os cultivos, criando uma poupança a ser utilizada nas necessidades futuras da família ou da propriedade. Há indícios de problemas nas pastagens e no rebanho que limitam tanto a produção e a sustentabilidade da pecuária, como comprometem os cultivos agrícolas que realmente sustentam a propriedade. Este estudo tratou de identificar as principais limitações e propor alternativas de manejo que sejam econômica e ecologicamente mais sustentáveis. Na primeira fase do estudo, numa amostra ao acaso de 38 propriedades, descreveu-se o manejo da pastagem e do rebanho, e na segunda, numa amostra menor, de doze propriedades e por um período de 29 meses, avaliou-se o potencial desses dois componentes. As propriedades estudadas desenvolvem uma pecuária de baixa produtividade. Devido à baixa fertilidade do solo e o deficiente manejo, as pastagens não suprem os alimentos necessários ao rebanho, tanto em quantidade como em qualidade. Também foram identificadas deficiências no manejo do rebanho, próprias de sistemas extensivos. Contudo, as limitações podem ser solucionadas com práticas amplamente conhecidas de manejo da pastagem (como formação, manutenção e manejo) e do rebanho (reprodução, manejo de bezerros e sanidade em geral). Novos modelos de exploração também foram sugeridos.

In Northeastern Pará, smallholder agriculturalists have established small pastures and manage small herds, mainly with the objective of investing profits in their crops, as a form of savings to meet the family's and property's future needs. There are indications of pasture and herd problems that limit production and sustainability, and threaten the crops that really sustain the property. This study sought to identify constraints and technological solutions, and make information available for public policies. In the 1st phase of this study and using 38 smallholdings sampled at random, the pastures and herd management were described, and in the 2nd phase, with a smaller sample of 12 smallholdings during 29-month period, the potential of these two components was evaluated. In general, the smallholdings have low-productivity and ranching is vulnerable. Due to the low soil fertility and the deficient management, pastures do not supply all the herd's feed needs, neither in quantity nor quality. Herd management deficiencies are characteristic of extensive production systems. However, these constraints can be overcome with well-known technologies of pasture establishment, maintenance and management, and herd reproduction, calf management, and herd health, allowing significant improvement. New exploitation models were suggested also.

A propriedade agrícola é cada vez mais reconhecida como um objeto de estudo complexo. Isso se torna importante quando nela se intervém para fornecer um conselho de orientação ou uma ajuda à gestão, ou, num quadro mais amplo, no âmbito de um plano de desenvolvimento rural. Nos estabelecimentos leiteiros das frentes pioneiras da Amazônia, cuja diversidade de funcionamento é particularmente marcante, a modelagem da diversidade, graças à construção de tipologias, representa uma etapa importante para a organização do desenvolvimento agrícola. A partir do caso das explorações leiteiras no município de Uruará, na frente pioneira da Transamazônica, foram identificados cincos principais tipos de sistemas de produção de leite e trajetórias desses. A combinação dessas duas tipologias levou a caracterizar as principais dinâmicas possíveis dentro da diversidade dos sistemas leiteiros, representando as principais evoluções entre os tipos de propriedades. Os resultados salientam a importância de fatores socioeconômicos na implementação e desenvolvimento da atividade leiteira. Nesse contexto, as propostas formuladas devem favorecer a integração da produção leiteira, a sua permanência e a melhoria das condições de produção.

The farm is each time more recognized as an object of complex study. This if becomes important when the farm is the object to supply an advice of orientation or an aid to the management, or the scope of a plan of agricultural development. For the dairy farms in agricultural borders of the Amazon, characterized by an important diversity of operation mode, the modeling of the diversity with the elaboration of typologies is an important stage for the organization of the agricultural development. From the case of dairy farms in Uruará municipio, situated on the Transamazonian frontier region, five main types of systems of milk production and theirs trajectories had been identified. Associating these two typologies, it was possible to identify the main dynamics within the diversity of the dairy systems, which represent principal evolutions between groups of farms. The results emphasize the importance of socioeconomics factors for the installation and the development of the dairy production. Inside this context, proposals can be formulated to promote the beginning of the dairy production, its stability and the improvement of the conditions of production.

Este trabalho apresenta os primeiros resultados do esforço conjunto de várias instituições, organizadas em torno da rede Geoma (Rede Temática de Pesquisa em Modelagem Ambiental da Amazônia) para avançar a compreensão dos novos padrões e processos de estruturação do território nas novas frentes no sul do Pará, analisando padrões de desmatamento e os processos que dão origem a esses padrões. Busca-se, aqui, produzir os subsídios necessários para o desenho de políticas públicas responsáveis, que não privilegiem um único aspecto do problema, como a abertura de estradas, por exemplo. Aponta-se, então, a partir desses primeiros resultados, que apenas uma solução integrada que procure estruturar os principais agentes e processos na cadeia produtiva seria possível para minorar os efeitos do desmatamento e nortear o desenvolvimento integrado para a região, com benefícios para a floresta e para as populações que ali vivem.

This work presents the first results achieved through an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional effort conduct by the Geoma Network, aiming to advance in the comprehension of the new frontiers in the South of the Pará State, in the Amazonian region, by examining the new patterns of deforestation and the underlying processes that are generating them. Our objective is to product information aiding to draw responsible public policies considering not only one dimension of the problem like roads infra-structure, as usual. Based on the analysis presented here we pointed out that only an integrated solution, that considers the main actors and the organization of economical processes in the productive chains over the region, would be capable to minimize the effects of deforestation and would drive an integrated development policy to the region bringing benefits to forest conservation and the local population.
