Abstract The improper disposal of this waste poses environmental challenges, which can be addressed through effective reuse strategies. This study aims to explore the potential of utilizing marine shell waste as partial substitutes for aggregates in concrete. The research involves investigating the physical characteristics of the recycled aggregate using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques to elucidate the contact surface with the paste. Additionally, chemical and mineralogical characteristics are analyzed through X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction tests. The compressive strength test is conducted on concrete samples to assess the performance of these materials as both aggregate (shell type A) and filler (shell type B). The findings indicate that replacing up to 20% of marine shells as coarse aggregate and 10% as filler demonstrates feasibility for applications in structural concrete. Furthermore, up to 30% replacement can be directed towards non-structural concrete, providing a comprehensive understanding of the potential applications of marine shell residues in concrete production.

Resumo As atividades de mariscagem e malacocultura produzem uma grande quantidade de resíduos sólidos compostos por conchas marinhas. O impacto ambiental do descarte inadequado pode ser atenuado com estratégias de reaproveitamento. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar a viabilidade do uso de resíduo de conchas marinhas com substituintes parciais de agregados no concreto. As características físicas do agregado reciclado foram investigadas através das técnicas de Microscopia de Força Atômica (MFA) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) a fim de esclarecer aspectos da superfície de contato com a pasta; as características químicas e mineralógicas foram investigadas por meio dos ensaios de fluorescência de raios-X e difração de raios-X; e o ensaio de resistência à compressão foi conduzido em amostras de concreto foram moldadas para avaliação do comportamento destes materiais do comportamento destes materiais como agregado (concha tipo A) e fíler (concha tipo B). Concluiu-se que o uso de até 20% de substituição de concha marinha como agregado graúdo e 10% como filer mostrou viabilidade para aplicações em concretos estruturais e, de forma complementar, teores de até 30% podem ser direcionados à concretos não estruturais.

Abstract Analytical and computational calibrations and subsequent parametric analyses were performed on the four UHPFRC beams under flexure to estimate their actual shear strength. The computational models were calibrated using different values for the CDP parameters, and a finite element mesh sensitivity study was conducted. These models predicted the experimental behavior satisfactorily, and the analytical model was also able to find the beams’ failure loads and proved to be a simple tool to estimate their behavior. The parametric analysis showed that the current beams did not require stirrups once the UHPFRC had high shear strength, and the maximum shear capacity was accurately determined.

OBJECTIVE: to compare two surgical approaches for fractures of the tibial pilon: open reduction and internal fixation with plate and screws versus closed reduction and external fixation with the Ilizarov circular external fixator, constituting a study with a level of evidence level 4 and seeking to determine which patients benefit most from each surgical approach. METHODS: The research involved 19 patients with fractures of the tibial pilon, divided into two groups according to their respective medical records and evaluated considering the quality of joint reduction, acute complications in relation to these two methods and associated injuries and comorbidities due to a minimum outpatient follow-up of four months. RESULTS: there was no difference in terms of reduction quality, whereas in terms of acute complications and the need for surgical re-approaches, the group of patients undergoing open reduction and internal fixation with plate and screws showed worse results. CONCLUSION: the choice between the methods must be individualized, considering the specific injuries and comorbidities of each patient.

OBJETIVO: comparar duas abordagens cirúrgicas para fraturas do pilão tibial: redução aberta e fixação interna com placa e parafusos versus redução fechada e fixação externa com o fixador externo circular de Ilizarov, constituindo um estudo prospectivo randomizado e busca determinar quais pacientes se beneficiam mais com cada abordagem cirúrgica. MÉTODOS: A pesquisa envolveu 19 pacientes com fraturas do pilão tibial, divididos em dois grupos de acordo com seus respectivos números de prontuário e foram avaliados considerando a qualidade da redução articular, complicações agudas em relação a esses dois métodos e com lesões associadas e comorbidades por um seguimento ambulatorial mínimo de quatro meses. RESULTADOS: não houve diferença quanto a qualidade de redução, já em relação a complicações agudas e necessidade de reabordagens o grupo de pacientes submetido a redução aberta e fixação interna com placa e parafusos apresentou piores resultados. CONCLUSÃO: a escolha entre os métodos deve ser individualizada, considerando as lesões e comorbidades específicas de cada paciente.

Abstract While peach tree is very sensitive to waterlogging, there are no works on the effect of the flooding over only part of its root system. The objective of this work was to investigate physiological and growth responses of ‘Nemared’ rootstock to partial flooding of roots. Treatments were performed for 6-days: control trees, half-flooded, and fully-flooded. Both flooding treatments negatively affected the vegetative growth, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content and leaf water potential. The response observed in the half-flooded treatment was intermediate between the control and fully-flooded treatment. The fastest response of stomatal conductance to soil flooding, before differences among treatments in leaf water potential were perceived, suggested that there should be a stomatal closure mechanism that responds to a signal that arises from flooded roots. The importance of this work, lies in showing the negative effects of unnoticed and partial floods, frequently occurring in peach trees.

Resumen Si bien el duraznero es muy sensible al anegamiento, no existen trabajos sobre el efecto de la inundación en una sola parte de su sistema radicular. El objetivo de este trabajo fue investigar las respuestas fisiológicas y de crecimiento del portainjertos ‘Nemared’ a la inundación parcial de sus raíces. Se establecieron tres tratamientos durante 6 días: árboles testigo, semi-inundados y totalmente inundados. Ambos tratamientos de inundación afectaron negativamente al crecimiento vegetativo, la conductancia estomática, el contenido de clorofila y el potencial hídrico foliar. La respuesta observada en el tratamiento semi-inundado fue intermedia entre el testigo y el totalmente inundado. La respuesta más rápida de la conductancia estomática a la inundación del suelo, antes de percibir diferencias entre los tratamientos en el potencial hídrico foliar, sugirió la existencia de un mecanismo de cierre estomático, el cual responde a una señal que proviene de las raíces inundadas. La importancia de este trabajo radica en mostrar los efectos negativos de las inundaciones parciales e inadvertidas que ocurren frecuentemente en los durazneros.

Abstract Objective: To characterize the location of tibial edema related to meniscal degeneration with a flap displaced into the meniscotibial recess (osteomeniscal impingement) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and Methods: We evaluated 40 MRI examinations of patients submitted to surgery due to inferior displacement of a meniscal flap tear into the meniscotibial recess and peripheral bone edema. Tibial edema was quantified in the coronal and axial planes. Results: On coronal MRI sequences, edema started in the tibial periphery and extended for a mean of 5.6 ± 1.4 mm, or 7.4 ± 2.1% of the tibial plateau. In the craniocaudal direction, the mean extension was 8.8 ± 2.9 mm. The mean ratio between the extent of craniocaudal and mediolateral edema was 1.6 ± 0.6. In the axial plane, the edema started in the medial periphery and extended for a mean of 6.2 ± 2.0 mm, or 8.2 ± 2.9% of the tibial plateau. In the anteroposterior measurement, the mean start and end of the edema was 21.4 ± 5.4 mm and 35.7 ± 5.7 mm, respectively, or 43.4 ± 10.2% and 72.8 ± 11.1% of the tibial plateau. Conclusion: Apparently, tibial edema resulting from osteomeniscal impingement always starts in the periphery of the meniscus. In the coronal plane, it appears to be more extensive in the craniocaudal direction than in the mediolateral direction. In the axial plane, we found it to extend, on average, approximately 6.2 mm in the mediolateral direction and to be most commonly located from the center to the posterior region of the medial tibial plateau.

Resumo Objetivo: Caracterizar a localização do edema ósseo tibial relacionado a lesão meniscal degenerativa com fragmento deslocado no recesso meniscotibial (impacto osteomeniscal) por meio de ressonância magnética (RM). Materiais e Métodos: Quarenta RMs de pacientes submetidos a cirurgia por fragmento deslocado do menisco medial no recesso meniscotibial e edema ósseo periférico foram avaliadas. Edema ósseo tibial foi quantificado nos planos coronal e axial. Resultados: No plano coronal, o edema iniciou-se na periferia tibial e estendeu-se por 5,6 ± 1,4 mm, ou 7,4 ± 2,1% do platô. Na direção craniocaudal, o edema estendeu-se em média 8,8 ± 2,9 mm. A média entre a extensão do edema craniocaudal e mediolateral foi 1,6 ± 0,6. No plano axial, o edema iniciou-se na periferia medial e estendeu-se por 6,2 ± 2,0 mm, ou 8,2 ± 2,9% da medida da tíbia. Na medida anteroposterior, o edema iniciou-se em 21,4 ± 5,4 mm e terminou em 35,7 ± 5,7 mm ou iniciou-se em 43,4 ± 10,2% e terminou em 72,8 ± 11,1% do platô tibial. Conclusão: O edema ósseo tibial relacionado aos casos de impacto osteomeniscal sempre se inicia na periferia do menisco. Ele é mais extenso na direção craniocaudal do que mediolateral no plano coronal. No plano axial, ele estende-se por 6,2 mm de medial a lateral e é mais frequentemente localizado no centro da região posterior do platô medial.

ABSTRACT Using nematode-resistant and/or -tolerant rootstock is a strategy that has maintained guava cultivation feasible in the irrigated perimeters of the Brazilian semi-arid region. The objective was to evaluate the production, gas exchange, and fruit quality of ‘Paluma’ guava with and without nematode-tolerant rootstock under different irrigation depths and production periods. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in the mixed 2 × 4 × 2 factorial scheme, corresponding to two forms of cultivation of ‘Paluma’ guava (without and with nematode-tolerant rootstock), four irrigation depths (60, 80, 100, and 120% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc), and two production periods, with four replicates. Guava plants were evaluated for physiological, production and post-harvest quality parameters. Gas exchange in ‘Paluma’ guava leaves was higher in the second production cycle, under irrigation depths above 100% ETc, not differing with the use of the rootstock. The use of the rootstock ‘BRS Guaraçá’ promotes a greater number of fruits and production with the increase of the irrigation depth, mainly in the second half of the year, with the increase of soluble solids and titratable acidity in the fruits.

RESUMO A utilização de porta enxerto resistente e ou tolerante a nematoides é uma estratégia que tem tornado viável a manutenção dos cultivos de goiabeira nos perímetros irrigados do semiárido brasileiro. Assim, o objetivo foi avaliar a produção, trocas gasosas e qualidade dos frutos da goiabeira ‘Paluma’ com e sem o porta enxerto tolerante a nematoide sob diferentes lâminas de irrigação e épocas de produção no Semiárido Brasileiro. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, no esquema fatorial misto 2 × 4 × 2, sendo duas formas de cultivo da goiabeira ‘Paluma’ (sem e com o porta enxerto tolerante a nematoide), quatro lâminas de irrigação (60, 80, 100 e 120% da evapotranspiração da cultura - ETc) e duas épocas de produção, com quatro repetições. Foram realizadas avaliações fisiológicas das plantas, produção e qualidade pós-colheita. As trocas gasosas nas folhas da goiabeira ‘Paluma’ foram maiores no segundo ciclo de produção, quando irrigada com lâminas de irrigação acima de 100% da ETc, não diferindo com o uso do porta enxerto. O uso do porta-enxerto ‘BRS Guaraçá’ proporciona um maior número de frutos e produção com o aumento da lâmina de irrigação, principalmente no segundo semestre do ano, bem como o aumento do teor de sólidos solúveis e acidez nos frutos.

ABSTRACT We characterized the surf-zone fish assemblage structure of an ocean beach on the central coast of Brazil (Guriri Beach, Espírito Santo) and assessed its diel variability. Like the entire Espírito Santo coast, Guriri Beach was also affected by ore tailings from the Fundão dam, which collapsed on November 5, 2015. Monthly samplings were carried out before the dam collapse along a year cycle (May 2013-April 2014), during the day and night in the neap tide, using a beach seine. A total of 2217 specimens were caught (1017 during the day and 1200 at night), distributed in 36 fish species and 20 families. Juveniles of the kingcroaker Menticirrhus spp., great pompano Trachinotus goodei, Florida pompano Trachinotus carolinus, littlescale threadfin Polydactylus oligodon, and Atlantic sabretooth anchovy Lycengraulis grossidens dominated the fish fauna, accounting for 84% of the total capture. The fish assemblage structure changed irregularly between day and night throughout the year. P. oligodon and Menticirrhus spp. were more abundant at night, whereas T. carolinus and L. grossidens were more abundant during the day. In most cases, no significant change was detected in fish abundance and richness between the day and night; when significant differences were detected, abundance and richness were higher at night. Our findings could support a monitoring program of the local surf-zone fish fauna and serve as before-impact data, allowing more accurate quantification of the ore tailings' impacts on the local fish biodiversity.

ABSTRACT: Objective: To characterize the health profile of newborns admitted a Conventional Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit of a reference Maternity in the State of Piauí. Method: Descriptive, exploratory and analytical study, with quantitative data approach, conducted from July to August 2021 in a Conventional Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit of a reference Maternity in the State of Piauí. It was developed through the evaluation and analysis of the unit's own newborn admission checklist. The data collection was performed using an elaborated and tested form. 1,251 newborns admitted to the unit during the selected period were included, and readmissions, incomplete or inconclusive records, or those outside the time frame were excluded. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The admissions occurred in a higher percentage in 2020, with a predominance of mothers from the interior of the state, male newborns, preterm, suiTable for gestational age, with Apgar score of 8-10, born from cesarean delivery and coming from the delivery room. Conclusion: From the data obtained through the characterization of newborns, we obtain adequate management, reduced morbidity and mortality, reduced hospitalization time and acquisition of resources needed for the care of the newborn.

RESUMEN: Objetivo: Caracterizar el perfil de salud de los recién nacidos ingresados en una Unidad de Cuidados Intermedios Neonatales Convencionales de Maternidad de referencia en el Estado de Piauí. Método: Estudio descriptivo, exploratorio y analítico, con abordaje de datos cuantitativos, realizado en el período de julio a agosto de 2021 en una Unidad de Cuidados Intermedios Neonatales Convencionales de Maternidad de referencia en el Estado de Piauí. Se elaboró mediante la evaluación y el análisis de la propia lista de control de admisión de recién nacidos de la unidad. La recogida de datos se realizó mediante un formulario elaborado y probado. Se incluyeron 1.251 recién nacidos ingresados en la unidad en el periodo elegido, y se excluyeron los reingresos, los registros incompletos o no concluyentes, o los que estaban fuera de plazo. Los datos se analizaron mediante estadísticas descriptivas e inferenciales. Resultados: Los ingresos se produjeron en mayor porcentaje en 2020, con predominio de madres procedentes del interior del estado, recién nacidos varones, pretérmino, adecuados a la edad gestacional, con puntuación de Apgar de 8-10, nacidos de parto por cesárea y procedentes de la sala de partos. Conclusión: A partir de los datos obtenidos mediante la caracterización de los recién nacidos, se obtiene un manejo adecuado, la reducción de la morbimortalidad, la reducción del tiempo de internamiento y la adquisición de los recursos necesarios para la atención al recién nacido.

Ele foi desenvolvido por meio de avaliação e análise de checklist próprio de admissão de recém-nascidos da unidade. A coleta dos dados foi realizado por meio de formulário elaborado e testado. Foram incluidos 1.251 recém-nascidos internados na unidade no periodo elegido, e excluídos readmissões, registros incompletos, inconclusivos ou fora do recorte temporal. Os dados foram analisados utilizando estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: As admissões ocorreram em maior porcentagem em 2020, com predominância de mães provenientes do interior do Estado, recém-nascidos do sexo masculino, pré-termos, adequado para a idade gestacional, com Apgar de 8-10, nascidos de parto cesáreos e provenientes da sala de parto. Conclusão: A partir dos dados obtidos por meio da caracterização dos recém-nascidos, obtém-se manejo adequado, redução da morbimortalidade, redução de tempo de internação e aquisição de recursos necessários para o atendimento ao neonato.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Peritoneal carcinomatosis in gastric cancer is considered a fatal disease, without expectation of definitive cure. As systemic chemotherapy is not sufficient to contain the disease, a multimodal approach associating intraperitoneal chemotherapy with surgery may represent an alternative for these cases. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of intraperitoneal chemotherapy in stage IV gastric cancer patients with peritoneal metastasis. METHODS: This study is a single institutional single-arm prospective clinical trial phase II (NCT05541146). Patients with the following inclusion criteria undergo implantation of a peritoneal catheter for intraperitoneal chemotherapy: Stage IV gastric adenocarcinoma; age 18–75 years; Peritoneal carcinomatosis with peritoneal cancer index<12; Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group 0/1; good clinical status; and lab exams within normal limits. The study protocol consists of four cycles of intraperitoneal chemotherapy with paclitaxel associated with systemic chemotherapy. After treatment, patients with peritoneal response assessed by staging laparoscopy undergo conversion gastrectomy. RESULTS: The primary outcome is the rate of complete peritoneal response. Progression-free and overall survivals are other outcomes evaluated. The study started in July 2022, and patients will be screened for inclusion until 30 are enrolled. CONCLUSIONS: Therapies for advanced gastric cancer patients have been evaluated in clinical trials but without success in patients with peritoneal metastasis. The treatment proposed in this trial can be promising, with easy catheter implantation and ambulatory intraperitoneal chemotherapy regime. Verifying the efficacy and safety of paclitaxel with systemic chemotherapy is an important progress that this study intends to investigate.

RESUMO RACIONAL: A carcinomatose peritoneal no câncer gástrico é considerada uma doença fatal, sem expectativa de cura definitiva. Como a quimioterapia sistêmica não é suficiente para conter a doença, uma abordagem multimodal associando a quimioterapia intraperitoneal à cirurgia pode representar uma alternativa para esses casos. OBJETIVOS: Investigar o papel da quimioterapia intraperitoneal em pacientes com câncer gástrico estágio IV com metástases peritoneais. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um ensaio clínico prospectivo unicêntrico, braço único, fase II (NCT05541146). Pacientes com os seguintes critérios de inclusão serão submetidos à implantação de cateter peritoneal para quimioterapia intraperitoneal: adenocarcinoma gástrico estágio IV; idade 18-75 anos; carcinomatose peritoneal com índice de câncer peritoneal<12; ECOG 0/1; bom estado clínico e exames laboratoriais dentro da normalidade. O protocolo do estudo consiste em 4 ciclos de quimioterapia intraperitoneal com Paclitaxel associado à quimioterapia sistêmica. Após o tratamento, os pacientes com resposta peritoneal avaliada por laparoscopia serão submetidos à gastrectomia de conversão. RESULTADOS: O desfecho primário é a taxa de resposta peritoneal completa. A sobrevida livre de progressão e global são outros desfechos avaliados. O estudo foi iniciado em julho de 2022 e os pacientes serão selecionados para inclusão até que 30 sejam inscritos. CONCLUSIONS: Terapias para pacientes com câncer gástrico avançado foram avaliadas em ensaios clínicos, mas sem sucesso em pacientes com metástase peritoneal. O tratamento proposto neste estudo pode ser promissor, com fácil implantação do cateter e regime de quimioterapia intraperitoneal ambulatorial. Verificar a eficácia e segurança do Paclitaxel associado à quimioterapia sistêmica é um progresso importante que o presente estudo pretende investigar.

ABSTRACT Introduction: CrossFit was created to develop the physical and motor skills of athletes in all categories, aiming for the physical limit of everyone who practices it, in accordance with their toning capacity. Objectives: Considering that the quest for these limits has resulted in an increasing number of CrossFitter injuries, the objective of this study was to define the levels of pain and the anatomical regions affected among CrossFitters in the city of Alfenas. Methods: The Corlett diagram was used in association with the Visual Analog Scale, which ranges from 1 to 10. Three CrossFit gyms in the city of Alfenas were visited and their CrossFitters were invited to participate in this research. Those who agreed to participate (109) signed the informed consent form. Results: Of the total number of participants interviewed, 86.63% reported having some type of pain in their daily CrossFit routine. Of the total number of respondents who experienced pain, 56.68% were women and 43.32% were men. The three areas that stand out with the highest prevalence of pain were shoulders at 51.37%, the lower back at 44.03%, and the knees at 40.36%. The One-way ANOVA test was applied with p≤ 0.05 and there was no statistical difference between the pain groups (trunk pain, right limb pain, and left limb pain). Conclusion: When we applied the Corlett diagram to verify the degree and anatomical regions of pain in CrossFitters in the city of Alfenas, it was evident that CrossFit is a sport that, by demanding a lot from those who practice it, ends up causing moderate to severe pain, especially in the shoulder, lumbar, and knee regions. RESUMEN Introducción: El CrossFit fue creado para desarrollar las habilidades físicas y motoras de deportistas de todas las categorías, apuntando al límite físico de cada practicante, según su capacidad tónica. Objetivos: Considerando que la búsqueda de estos límites ha resultado en cada vez más lesiones en sus practicantes, este estudio tuvo como objetivo establecer el grado de dolor y la región anatómica afectada resultante del CrossFit en la ciudad de Alfenas. Métodos: Para ello, se utilizó el diagrama de Corlett asociado a la Escala Visual Analógica, que varía de 0 a 10. Se visitaron tres gimnasios de CrossFit en la Ciudad de Alfenas y se invitó a los frecuentadores a participar en esta investigación y todos los que aceptaron participar (109) firmaron el formulario de consentimiento informado. Resultados: Del total de encuestados, el 86,63% informó tener algún tipo de dolor en la práctica diaria de CrossFit. Del total de encuestados que presentaron dolor, el 56,68% eran mujeres y el 43,32% hombres. Entre los tres lugares de mayor prevalencia de dolor, se destacaron los hombros, 51,37%; espalda baja, 44,03% y rodilla, 40,36%. Se aplicó la prueba ANOVA One Way con p≤ 0,05 y no hubo diferencias estadísticas entre los grupos de dolor (dolor de tronco, dolor de miembro derecho y dolor de miembro izquierdo). Conclusión: Al aplicar el diagrama de Corlett para verificar el grado de dolor y la región anatómica en los practicantes de CrossFit en la ciudad de Alfenas, se evidenció que CrossFit es un deporte que, al exigir mucho a sus practicantes, termina provocando dolor moderado a severo, especialmente en las regiones del hombro, la espalda baja y la rodilla. RESUMO Introdução: O CrossFit foi criado para desenvolver as habilidades físicas e motoras de atletas de todas as categorias, visando o limite físico de cada praticante, de acordo com sua capacidade tônica. Objetivos: Considerando que a busca desses limites tem acarretado cada vez mais lesões nos praticantes, este estudo visou estabelecer o grau de dor e a região anatômica afetada decorrentes do CrossFit na cidade de Alfenas. Métodos: Para tal, foi usado o diagrama de Corlett associado à Escala Visual Analógica, que varia de 0 a 10. Três academias de CrossFit da cidade de Alfenas foram visitadas e os frequentadores foram convidados a participar desta pesquisa e todos que concordaram em participar (109) assinaram o termo de consentimento livre esclarecido. Resultados: Do total de entrevistados, 86,63% relataram ter algum tipo de dor na prática diária de CrossFit. Do total de entrevistados que apresentaram dor, 56,68% eram mulheres e 43,32% homens. Entre os três locais de maior prevalência de dor destacaram-se ombros, 51,37%; parte inferior das costas/do dorso, 44,03%; joelho, 40,36%. Foi aplicado o teste ANOVA One Way com p ≤ 0,05 e não houve diferença estatística entre os grupos de dor (dor no tronco, dor no membro direito e dor no membro esquerdo). Conclusão: Ao aplicar o diagrama de Corlett para verificar o grau de dor e a região anatômica nos praticantes de CrossFit da cidade de Alfenas, evidenciou-se que o CrossFit é um esporte que, por exigir muito dos praticantes, acaba acarretando dores de moderada a grave, principalmente nas regiões do ombro, lombar e do joelho. Nível de evidência II; Estudo retrospectivo.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular complications of COVID-19 are important aspects of the disease’s pathogenesis and prognosis. Evidence on the prognostic role of troponin and myocardial injury in Latin American hospitalized COVID-19 patients is still scarce. Objectives To evaluate myocardial injury as independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized patients, from the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry. Methods This cohort study is a substudy of the Brazilian COVID-19 Registry, conducted in 31 Brazilian hospitals of 17 cities, March-September 2020. Primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and invasive mechanical ventilation support. Models for the primary outcomes were estimated by Poisson regression with robust variance, with statistical significance of p<0.05. Results Of 2,925 patients (median age of 60 years [48-71], 57.1% men), 27.3% presented myocardial injury. The proportion of patients with comorbidities was higher among patients with cardiac injury (median 2 [1-2] vs. 1 [0-2]). Patients with myocardial injury had higher median levels of brain natriuretic peptide, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and C-reactive protein than patients without myocardial injury. As independent predictors, C-reactive protein and platelet counts were related to the risk of death, and neutrophils and platelet counts were related to the risk of invasive mechanical ventilation support. Patients with high troponin levels presented a higher risk of death (RR 2.03, 95% CI 1.60-2.58) and invasive mechanical ventilation support (RR 1.87, 95% CI 1.57-2.23), when compared to those with normal troponin levels. Conclusion Cardiac injury was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation support in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Resumo Fundamento As complicações cardiovasculares da COVID-19 são aspectos importantes da patogênese e do prognóstico da doença. Evidências do papel prognóstico da troponina e da lesão miocárdica em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19 na América Latina são ainda escassos. Objetivos Avaliar a lesão miocárdica como preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados, do registro brasileiro de COVID-19. Métodos Este estudo coorte é um subestudo do registro brasileiro de COVID-19, conduzido em 31 hospitais brasileiros de 17 cidades, de março a setembro de 2020. Os desfechos primários incluíram mortalidade hospitalar e suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os modelos para os desfechos primários foram estimados por regressão de Poisson com variância robusta, com significância estatística de p<0,05. Resultados Dos 2925 pacientes [idade mediana de 60 anos (48-71), 57,1%], 27,3% apresentaram lesão miocárdica. A proporção de pacientes com comorbidades foi maior nos pacientes com lesão miocárdica [mediana 2 (1-2) vs. 1 (0-20)]. Os pacientes com lesão miocárdica apresentaram maiores valores medianos de peptídeo natriurético cerebral, lactato desidrogenase, creatina fosfoquinase, N-terminal do pró-peptídeo natriurético tipo B e proteína C reativa em comparação a pacientes sem lesão miocárdica. Como fatores independentes, proteína C reativa e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados com o risco de morte, e neutrófilos e contagem de plaquetas foram relacionados ao risco de suporte ventilatório mecânico invasivo. Os pacientes com níveis elevados de troponina apresentaram um maior risco de morte (RR 2,03, IC95% 1,60-2,58) e suporte ventilatório mecânico (RR 1,87;IC95% 1,57-2,23), em comparação àqueles com níveis de troponina normais. Conclusão Lesão cardíaca foi um preditor independente de mortalidade hospitalar e necessidade de suporte ventilatório mecânico em pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19.

Abstract The Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute is the biggest in Latin America and it is among the largest collections at worldwide reference level, with around 40,000 sets of specimens and approximately one million individual specimens. It contains helminths parasites of vertebrate and invertebrate animals that form part of the fauna of Brazil and other countries. The samples comprise holotypes, paratypes and representative specimens of Platyhelminthes, Acanthocephala, Nematoda and other non-helminth phyla, such as Annelida and Arthropoda. Some of the samples preserved in liquid media were found to have dried out. This made it impossible to analyze these samples morphologically for taxonomic purposes. The aim of this study was to test techniques used for rehydration of the tegument of specimens that had been found to have dried out and present protocols for such techniques. A total of 528 specimens that either no longer were immersed in preservatives or had already dried out were analyzed: 96 digenetic trematodes, 45 cestodes, 22 acanthocephalans, 357 nematodes, four hirudineans and four pentastomid crustaceans. The technique of rehydration using only distilled water on the specimens proved to be efficient for recovering tegument malleability, for all samples analyzed in this present study.

Resumo A Coleção Helmintológica do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz é a maior da América Latina e está entre as maiores coleções de referência mundial, com cerca de 40.000 lotes e, aproximadamente, um milhão de espécimes. Seu acervo reúne helmintos parasitos de animais vertebrados e invertebrados da fauna brasileira e de outros países. Seus exemplares são holótipos, parátipos e espécimes representativos de parasitos, pertencentes aos filos Platyhelminthes, Acanthocephala, Nematoda e, ainda alguns espécimes não-helmintos, pertencentes aos filos Annelida e Arthropoda. Parte das amostras preservadas como material líquido foram encontradas dessecadas. Esta condição torna as amostras inviáveis para análise morfológica para propósitos taxonômicos. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi testar técnicas usadas na reidratação do tegumento dos espécimes que se encontram dessecados e apresentar seus protocolos. Foram analisados 528 lotes, cujos espécimes encontravam-se sem conservantes ou já dessecados: 96 trematodeos digenéticos, 45 cestoides, 22 acantocéfalos, 357 nematoides, quatro hirudíneos e quatro crustáceos pentastomídeos. A técnica de reidratação dos espécimes, utilizando-se apenas água destilada, mostrou-se eficiente na recuperação da maleabilidade tegumentar de todas as amostras trabalhadas no presente estudo.

ABSTRACT Congenital and gestational syphilis are increasingly prevalent multisystemic infections in Brazil. This study aimed to present a case series of three children diagnosed with congenital syphilis even though their mother had unreactive treponemal tests. The VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) titers of a 22-year-old mother with three pregnancies decreased after treatment. The mother did not have a reactive treponemal test, but all the three children were diagnosed with early congenital syphilis. This case series highlights the difficulty in diagnosing gestational and congenital syphilis in Brazil.
