Abstract The structure of urban secondary forests and their potential for meliponiculture in the eastern Amazon was studied in the municipality of Belterra, Pará. The sampling was carried out in 25 plots of 40 m2 in two areas (0.1 ha) of secondary forests (SF), in which three classes of DBH values were considered (C1:1 cm ≤ DBH ≤ 5 cm; C2: 5 cm < DBH ≤ 10 cm and C3: DBH ≥ 10 cm). a total of 230 individuals were registered in SF I, comprising 66 species and 27 botanical families and 185 individuals in SF II, comprising 43 species distributed in 24 botanical families. The highest richness and abundance were verified for C1, followed by C2 in both areas. In SF I, the basal area values (G=1.509) were higher than in SF II, while the total volume (V=20.21) was higher than SF I, the mean height for C3 was higher in SF II, and C1 and C2 were higher in SF I. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index was higher in SF I (H = 3.722) than in SF II (H=3.197). It was observed that 75% species have bee pollination systems (mellitophilous flora) and are thus considered sources of honey resources.

Resumo Este trabalho analisou o desempenho de sustentabilidade de 26 municípios do arco do desmatamento no estado do Pará, Brasil nos anos 2000 e 2010, utilizando-se o Barômetro da Sustentabilidade com 31 indicadores nas dimensões social, econômica e ambiental. Os resultados mostram que Altamira e Novo Progresso tem desempenho intermediário nos dois anos e cinco municípios progrediram para o nível intermediário em 2010 enquanto os outros permaneceram em situação crítica. Houve desaceleração do desmatamento nos municípios, mas apesar dos resultados positivos alcançados, eles foram pouco satisfatórios para mudar o status de sustentabilidade dos municípios.

Abstract This work analyzed sustainability performance of 26 municipalities in the so-called amazon arch of deforestation in the state of Pará, Brazil in the years 2000 and 2010, using the Sustainability Barometer with 31 indicators in social, economic and environmental dimensions. The results show that Altamira and Novo Progresso have intermediate performance in two years and five municipalities progressed to the intermediate level in 2010 while the other remained in a critical situation. There was a slowdown in deforestation in municipalities, but despite the positive results achieved, they were unsatisfactory to change the sustainability status of municipalities.

Abstract This study aimed to identify priority areas for the passive restoration of the Arauaí river basin, municipality of Moju, Pará, using a multicriteria model. This basin is located in a region with intense land use dynamics and expansion of oil palm cultivation, and with high forest loss and fragmentation. The Weighted Linear Combination method was used, with the aggregation of five criteria (Natural Erosion Vulnerability, Potential Land Use and Cover to Passive Restoration, Proximity to the Primary Forest, Forest cover deficit in PPAs, and Distance from Roads and Highways). This analysis allowed to evaluate different biophysical classes and types of land use that affect the selection of areas for restoration. A total of 207.82 km2 of priority areas for passive restoration were identified in the studied basin, with about 80% of its priority areas having medium to very high priority. The final map generated proved to be a useful instrument in the environmental management of restoration plans in the Amazon watershed.

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é contribuir com o debate acerca do desmatamento no contexto da evolução das políticas de gestão fundiária e territorial na Amazônia, destacando seu papel relevante para o reconhecimento de direitos políticos de categorias sociais minoritárias. A associação do desmatamento na Amazônia sempre esteve correlacionada a problemas sociais e envolve diferentes agentes e fatores causadores conforme a área de abrangência e o momento de sua realização. Procuram-se evidenciar alguns dos principais fatores institucionais que contribuem para pôr em xeque as conquistas do modelo socioambiental por meio de um estudo de caso no assentamento rural categoria Projeto Agroextrativista Praialta-Piranheira, Pará. Essa análise permite concluir que a falta de coerência institucional representa um aspecto estrutural cujo desconhecimento incapacita a compreensão das dinâmicas territoriais da Amazônia.

ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to analyze the driving forces of deforestation in the context of the evolution of land use and land management policies, emphasizing their role in the recognition of political rights of minority social groups. The underlying causes of deforestation in the Amazon have always been correlated with social problems and the use of labor in conditions similar to slavery. Such dynamics involves different agents and causative factors embedded in a complex web of historical factors, political forces and economic cycles. This paper emphasizes some of the leading institutional factors that contribute to understanding the achievements of the social-environmental model by means of a case study in the rural settlement “Projeto Agroextrativista Praialta-Piranheira”, in Pará, Brazil. This analysis allowed us to conclude that the lack of institutional coherence is a structural aspect that hinders a better context-driven understanding of the territorial dynamics of Amazonia.

Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi identificar o panorama da Sustentabilidade na Região Metropolitana de Santarém, estado do Pará, Brasil, para os anos de 2000 e 2010, a partir do Sistema de Índices de Sustentabilidade Urbana, composto por três índices, 10 indicadores e 19 variáveis. Foram identificados avanços no desempenho dos municípios que compõem esta região, em relação aos Índice de Capacidade Político-institucional e Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano Municipal, não havendo melhoria para o Índice de Qualidade Ambiental. Investimentos na qualidade de serviços, cadeias produtivas, ordenamento territorial e gestão ambiental, fazem-se necessários para melhoria dos níveis de sustentabilidade nesta região.

Abstract The objective of the study was to identify the sustainability scenario in the metropolitan region of Santarém, state of Pará, Brazil, for the years 2000 and 2010, based on the Urban Sustainability Indices System by three indices, 10 indicators, and 19 variables. Progress was made in the performance of the municipalities that compose this region in relation to the Political-Institutional Capacity Index and the Municipal Human Development Index. There was no improvement for the Environmental Quality Index. Investments in the quality of services, productive chains, spatial planning, and environmental management are necessary to improve sustainability levels in this region.

Resumo A região metropolitana de Belém (RMB) concentra 1/3 da população do estado do Pará, Brasil, e sua recente expansão tem causado uma série de problemas sociais e ambientais, que comprometem o acesso à infraestrutura e serviços, e também impactam outros fatores que influenciam a sustentabilidade urbana. Nos últimos anos, várias metodologias de avaliação da sustentabilidade das cidades têm sido propostas, porém os desafios ainda são enormes, no sentido de incorporar uma visão pluridimensional na avaliação da sustentabilidade urbana. No presente trabalho aplicou-se o Sistema de Índices de Sustentabilidade Urbana (SISU) para a RMB, com o objetivo de analisar os níveis de sustentabilidade dos municípios que compõem essa região metropolitana e verificar as limitações e os desafios em aplicar esse método de mensuração na Amazônia. Foram empregados 7 indicadores para o índice de qualidade ambiental (IQA), 4 para o índice de capacidade político institucional (ICP) e o índice de desenvolvimento humano municipal (IDHM). Os resultados obtidos mostram que há pouca variação nos índices IQA e IHDM, sendo que os municípios menos populosos, como Santa Bárbara e Benevides apresentam melhor IQA, e os de maior porte, como Belém e Ananindeua, o melhor IDHM. Entretanto, é em relação ao ICP que esta região metropolitana apresenta a maior desigualdade intermunicipal, refletindo assim, a necessidade do fortalecimento institucional e político dessa região.

Abstract The metropolitan area of Belém (RMB) contains 1/3 of the population of Pará State, Brazil, and its recent expansion has caused a number of social and environmental problems that undermine access to infrastructure and services and also impact other factors that influence urban sustainability. In recent years, various methodologies for assessing the sustainability of cities have been proposed, but the challenges of incorporating a multidimensional approach in the evaluation of urban sustainability are still enormous. In this work, we applied the Urban Sustainability Index System (SISU) to the RMB in order to analyze the levels of sustainability of the municipalities that constitute this metropolitan area and to verify the limitations and challenges in applying this method of measurement in the Amazon region. Seven indicators were used for the environmental quality index (IQA), and four for the political institutional capacity index (ICP) and the municipal human development index (IDHM). The results show that there is little variation in the IQA and IHDM indices, and the least-populated municipalities such as Santa Barbara and Benevides have better IQAs, while larger-populated municipalities, such as Belém and Ananindeua, have better IDHMs. However, it is in relation to ICP that this metropolitan area has the highest inequality, thus reflecting the need for the institutional and political empowerment of this region.

As Áreas de Preservação Permanente (APPs) desempenham um papel fundamental na manutenção dos principais fatores que regulam os processos hidrológicos e de conservação biológica. Na Amazônia, as APPs vêm sendo ocupadas com atividades econômicas de alto impacto ambiental que levam à supressão de vegetação, desrespeitando o regime legal desse tipo de área protegida. Este artigo analisa os conflitos de uso da terra dentro das áreas destinadas à preservação e propõe uma delimitação dessas áreas de acordo com o Código Florestal Brasileiro de 2012, no municipio de Moju, um dos mais importantes polos de produção de biodiesel do estado do Pará. A pesquisa utilizou imagem multiespectral de alta resolução do satélite RapidEye de 2010 para uma classificação supervisionada que determinou oito classes de cobertura e uso da terra, com especial atenção para a floresta, o cultivo agrícola e cultivo de óleo de palma (Elaeis guineensis). As terras alteradas do município perfazem 30,29% do total, sendo que 17,07% estão ocupadas pela pecuária. Somente 5,2% do território de Moju é legalmente definido como APP. Destas áreas, 29,3% se encontram em uso conflituoso, onde predomina a pastagem, presente em 15,6% das APPs do município. O cultivo de palma corresponde a apenas 0,63% da área da APP e a 2,17% do município. A aplicação das novas regras de recomposição de APPs pelo novo Código Florestal Brasileiro irá resultar em perda de 60,69% de área recuperada em APPs neste município.

Areas of Permanent Preservation (APPs) play a crucial role in maintaining some of the most important factors regulating hydrological processes and biological conservation. In Amazonia, APPs are being used in economic activities with high environmental impact in violation of legislation concerning this category of protected land. This leads in turn to the suppression of vegetation. This paper analyzed land use conflicts within APPs and outlined these areas in the municipality of Moju according to the Brazilian Forest Code of 2012. Moju is one of the main biodiesel production centers in the State of Pará. The study used high‑resolution multispectral imagery acquired in 2010 by the RapidEye satellite and supervised classification algorithm to determine eight classes of land cover and use, with special attention to forest, agricultural cultivation and oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) cultivation. Altered lands in the municipality amount to 30.29% of the total, of which 17.08% is used by livestock. APPs with original vegetation cover (forest and campinarana) constitute 68% of the municipality area. The loss of 28.29% of the vegetative cover in local APPs is due mainly to agriculture and animal husbandry. Oil palm cultivation comprises only 0.63% of the APP and 2.17% of the municipality areas. Application of the latest guidelines for APPs delimitation according to the new Forest Code will result in the loss of 60.69% of the APP-recovered areas in this municipality.

A SOCIEDADE brasileira recebe, anualmente, a estimativa de perda de floresta na Amazônia por meio da taxa de desflorestamento divulgada pelo Inpe, a qual, em 2004, foi de aproximadamente 26.130 km² . O que não se conhece é o quanto de recursos naturais se perde a cada quilômetro quadrado de floresta destruída. Neste trabalho, apresentamos números concretos desta perda, baseados em estudos recentes sobre a densidade de plantas e de alguns grupos de animais na Amazônia. Com base nisso, defendemos a idéia de que não há necessidade de se ampliar o desflorestamento na região e que, portanto, qualquer licença de desmatamento deveria ser proibida na Amazônia. Sugerimos também que o sistema de ciência e tecnologia regional deve ser descentralizado através do desenvolvimento de programas de pesquisa integrados, focalizados no desenho e no teste de modelos de territórios sustentáveis para os diferentes setores da região.

BRAZILIAN society receives yearly an estimate of the Amazonian rainforest loss by means of a deforestation rate announced by Inpe, which in 2004 was of approximatly 26,130 km². What we do not know is how much of the natural resources is lost in each square kilometer of forest destruction. In this work, we present concrete numbers of forest loss, based on recent studies of plant densities and some animal species in the Amazon region. Our findings support the idea that it is not necessary to extend further deforestation in the region and, therefore, that deforestation licenses should be forbidden. Moreover, we propose that regional science and technology system must be gradually descentralized and enhanced through the integration and development of research programs focused in drawing and testing models of sustainable territories for the different social segments of the region.

El término "áreas degradadas" es utilizado normalmente para definir las áreas de bosques secundarios en la Amazonía brasileña. El gobierno y las iniciativas privadas han propuesto las plantaciones mecanizadas de granos, especialmente la soya, el maíz y el arroz, como alternativa de aprovechamiento de estas áreas, consideradas degradadas e improductivas. En este trabajo fue realizado un análisis sobre la importancia de las áreas de bosques secundarios en la Amazonía, mostrando su valor del punto vista ecológico, social y económico, además de los impactos de su sustitución por plantaciones mecanizadas.

The term "degraded lands" has been used to refer to secondary, or regenerated, forests in the Brazilian Amazon. Both government and private enterprise have proposed the mechanized cultivation of grains, specially soybean, maize, and rice, as an alternative utilization of these areas, considered prima facie to be degraded and unproductive. An analysis of the importance of Amazonian second-growth forests was undertaken from ecological, social and economic points of view, and the impacts are discussed of their proposed substitution by large-scale mechanized grain cultivation.

O termo "áreas degradadas" tem sido usado para definir as áreas de florestas secundárias na Amazônia brasileira. O governo e iniciativas privadas têm proposto o plantio mecanizado de grãos, em especial a soja, o milho e o arroz, como alternativa de aproveitamento dessas áreas, consideradas como degradadas e improdutivas. Neste trabalho, foi feita uma análise sobre a importância das áreas de florestas secundárias na Amazônia, mostrando seu valor do ponto de vista ecológico, social e econômico e os impactos da sua substituição por plantios mecanizados de grãos.

RESUMO - (Fenologia, relação fruto-flor e dispersão de Cordia multispicata Cham., uma importante planta invasora de pastagens no leste da Amazônia). A ecologia reprodutiva do arbusto Cordia multispicata foi estudada em uma pastagem abandonada após uso intensivo, em Paragominas, estado do Pará. Esta espécie é muito comum na Amazônia, onde aparece como invasora em habitats abertos ou perturbados. Possui flores distílicas e uma grande quantidade de flores por inflorescência (85 ± 12), sendo que 84% aborta antes de ser fecundada. A floração se estende durante o ano inteiro. Os frutos são pequenos, de coloração vermelha e pericarpo carnoso, bastante atraentes para aves. A relação fruto-flor é baixa na estação seca, alcançando valores mais elevados na época chuvosa, quando há mais freqüentes visitas de insetos nas flores. A frutificação ocorre no final da estação seca e se estende até meados da estação chuvosa. Foram encontradas 19 espécies de pássaros forrageando os frutos de C multispicata, sendo que 79% dessas espécies são dispersores efetivos das sementes desta espécie. O eficiente modo de dispersão das sementes, associado com algumas características dos dispersores, parece ser fundamental no sucesso da espécie nas pastagens abandonadas da Amazônia oriental.

ABSTRACT - (Phenology, fruit set and dispersal of Cordia multispicata Cham., an important weed shrub of abandoned pastures in eastern Amazonia). The reproductive ecology of the distylous tropical shrub Cordia multispicata was studied in an abandoned pasture in Paragominas County , Pará state, Brazil. It is a common species in the Amazon basin where it occurs as a weed in open and disturbed habitats. C. multispicata has many flowers per inflorescence (85 ± 12) but 84% abort before fertilization. Flowering occurs throughout the year. Fruits are small, with a red fleshy pericarp (skin-pulp) attractive to birds. Fruit set is lower during the dry season (less than 30%) and higher during the rainy season when there are many visits of insects to the flowers. Fruiting has a peak between the end of the dry season and the middle of the rainy season. Nineteen bird species were observed foraging for the fruits of C. multispicata, and 79% of those species can be considered as potential dispersal agents. The efficient seed dispersal and aggregated spatial distribution associated with some characteristics of the dispersors greatly contributed to the success of this species in abandoned pastures of eastern Amazonia.
