ABSTRACT Although macroeconomic conditions are recognized as factors that influences country’s performance, little is known about how companies from different sectors absorb such impacts. Using the myopic marketing theory, the paper goal is to analyze the relationship between macroeconomic conditions and marketing investments in Brazilian companies. The sample consists of 183 Brazilian companies with quarterly financial data, obtained from Economatica, and macroeconomic data, obtained from IpeaData (2010 to 2020). First, the results indicate that GDP, interest rates and consumer confidence are positively related, and the exchange rate and unemployment showed a negative relationship with marketing investments. Second, the impact of these relationships differs across sectors. Third, the results demonstrate that the level of investments and expansion of marketing investments depend on macroeconomic conditions, indicating which contexts influence the discretionary treatment of the marketing budget.

RESUMEN Aunque las condiciones macroeconómicas son reconocidas como factores que influyen en el desempeño del país, poco se sabe sobre cómo las empresas, los diferentes sectores y la inversión en marketing absorben dichos impactos. Utilizando la teoría de la miopía en marketing, el objetivo de este artículo es analizar la relación entre las condiciones macroeconómicas y las inversiones en marketing de las empresas brasileñas. La muestra consta de 183 empresas brasileñas con datos financieros trimestrales, obtenidos de Economática, y datos macroeconómicos, obtenidos de IpeaData, de 2010 a 2020. En primer lugar, los resultados indican que el PIB, las tasas de interés y la confianza del consumidor están relacionados positivamente y el tipo de cambio y el desempleo mostraron una relación negativa con las inversiones en marketing. En segundo, los impactos de estas relaciones difieren entre sectores. En tercer lugar, los análisis demuestran que el nivel de inversiones y la expansión de las inversiones en marketing dependen de las condiciones macroeconómicas, lo que indica que los contextos influyen en el tratamiento discrecional del presupuesto de marketing.

RESUMO Embora as condições macroeconômicas sejam reconhecidas como fatores que influenciam o desempenho do País, pouco se sabe como as empresas, os diferentes setores e o investimento em marketing absorvem tais impactos. Utilizando a teoria da miopia em marketing, o objetivo deste artigo é analisar a relação entre as condições macroeconômicas e os investimentos em marketing de empresas brasileiras. A amostra é formada por 183 empresas brasileiras com dados financeiros trimestrais, obtidos na Economática, e macroeconômicos, obtidos no IpeaData, de 2010 a 2020. Primeiro, os resultados indicam que o PIB, os juros e a confiança do consumidor estão relacionados positivamente, e o câmbio e o desemprego apresentaram relação negativa com os investimentos em marketing. Segundo, os impactos dessas relações diferem entre os vários setores. Terceiro, as análises demonstram que o nível de investimentos e de ampliação dos investimentos em marketing dependem das condições macroeconômicas, indicando que contextos influenciam o tratamento discricionário do orçamento de marketing.

ABSTRACT The papers on this Special Issue of the Journal of Contemporary Administration promote an important discussion in the Brazilian digital marketing field. In this editorial, we explain how the authors build bridges between digital marketing, marketplace, consumers, and firms’ applications by means of empirical investigations. As new technologies force marketing to constantly change to adjust to social platforms in the digital environment, insights about Brazilian digital marketing are missing. Considering the digital economy, consumer behavior, and technological culture, the five papers raise interesting questions about how viral advertising and image/video/audio platforms affect consumer response measures (e.g., online purchases) and create social media experiences. Such experiences include omnichannel environments that connect and create ecosystems across firms, consumers, governments, stakeholders, and marketing professionals in organized networks.

RESUMO Nos artigos deste Número Especial da Revista de Administração Contemporânea (RAC), os autores promovem uma importante discussão no campo do marketing digital brasileiro. Neste editorial, explicamos como os autores constroem pontes entre marketing digital, marketplace, consumidores e aplicações das empresas por meio de investigações empíricas. Como o marketing vem utilizando novas tecnologias isso demanda mudanças constantes de ajustes às plataformas sociais no ambiente digital e faltam insights sobre o marketing digital brasileiro. Considerando a economia digital, o comportamento do consumidor e a cultura tecnológica, os cinco artigos levantam questões interessantes sobre como a publicidade viral e as plataformas de imagem/vídeo/áudio afetam as medidas de resposta do consumidor (por exemplo, compras on-line) e criam experiências de mídia social. Tais experiências incluem ambientes omnichannel que conectam e criam ecossistemas entre empresas, consumidores, governos, partes interessadas e profissionais de marketing em redes organizadas.

RESUMO Objetivo: tomando por base a voluntary disclosure theory, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar os efeitos da intensidade dos investimentos de marketing e do ciclo de vida das empresas no disclosure dos investimentos de marketing. Método: a amostra possui dados financeiros de 89 companhias brasileiras listadas na Bolsa B3 (Economatica) unificados com dados dos investimentos de marketing das empresas (notas explicativas e relatório da administração). Resultados: tanto a intensidade dos investimentos de marketing como o ciclo de vida das empresas influenciam o disclosure dos investimentos de marketing. As fases de nascimento e crescimento moderam os efeitos da intensidade dos investimentos de marketing, diminuindo o nível de disclosure, especialmente em informações qualitativas. Conclusões: os achados sustentam a voluntary disclosure theory e são baseados em argumentos de julgamento porque mostram que, existindo alta intensidade de investimentos de marketing, o disclosure dos investimentos de marketing é gerenciado passando do status de segredo em empresas que estão nas fases de nascimento e crescimento para o status de recurso de diferenciação em empresas na fase de maturidade.

ABSTRACT Objective: drawing on voluntary disclosure theory, the paper’s main goal was to analyze the main effect of marketing intensity and the moderating role of life cycle on disclosure of marketing investments. Method: the sample includes 89 Brazilian companies listed on B3 stock exchange. We collected financial data from two sources, such as Economatica platform and in the explanatory notes and management report from the companies, which we coded through content analysis. We merged these two datasets and analyzed it using multiple linear regression. Results: both the marketing intensity and the life cycle of companies have effects on disclosure of marketing investments. In addition, the birth and growth phases moderate the main effect of marketing intensity, reducing the level of disclosure. This moderation is identified especially in disclosures of qualitative information. Conclusions: the findings support the voluntary disclosure theory based on arguments of judgment-based disclosure. Outcomes showed that when there is a high intensity of marketing investments, disclosure of marketing investments is managed by moving from the status of secrecy in companies in the birth and growth phases of life cycle to the status of differentiation resource in companies in the maturity phase of life cycle.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the emotional contagion theory in print ads, and expand the literature of smiling to different type of smiles and gender congruency. Emotional contagion happens when an emotion is transferred from a sender to a receiver by the synchronization of emotions from the emitter. Drawing on emotional contagion theory, the authors expand this concept and propose that smiles in static facial expressions influence product evaluation. They suggest that false smiles do not have the same impact as genuine smiles on product evaluation, and the congruence between the model gender–product in a static ad and the gender of the viewer moderates the effects. Design/methodology/approach In Experiment 1, subjects were randomly assigned to view one of the two ad treatments to guard against systematic error (e.g. bias). In Experiment 2, it was investigated whether viewing a static ad featuring a model with a false smile can result in a positive product evaluation as was the case with genuine smiles (H3). In Experiment 3, it was assumed that when consumers evaluate an ad featuring a smiling face, the facial expression influences product evaluation, and this influence is moderated by the congruence between the gender of the ad viewer and the product H gender of the model in the ad. Findings Across three experiments, the authors found that the model’s facial expression influenced the product evaluation. Second, they supported the association between a model’s facial expression and mimicry synchronization. Third, they showed that genuine smiles have a higher impact on product evaluation than false smiles. This novel result enlarges the research on genuine smiles to include false smiles. Fourth, the authors supported the gender–product congruence effect in that the gender of the ad’s reader and the model have a moderating effect on the relationship between the model’s facial expression and the reader’s product evaluation. Originality/value Marketing managers would benefit from understanding that genuine smiles can encourage positive emotions on the part of consumers via emotional contagion, which would be very useful to create a positive effect on products. The authors improved upon previous psychological theory (Gunnery et al., 2013; Hennig-Thurau et al., 2006) showing that a genuine smile results in higher evaluation scores of products presented in static ads. The theoretical explanation for this effect is the genuine smile, which involves contraction of both zygomatic major and orbicularis oculi muscles. These facial muscles can be better perceived and transmit positive emotions (Hennig-Thurau et al., 2006).

ABSTRACT Sales management is an integral part of virtually all market exchanges. Marketing team, sales opportunities, salesperson skills, firm sales resources, digital platforms, and sales compensation plan create a marketing-salesperson-firm dynamic underlying the sales prospecting framework. Firm’s managers continuously strive to deal with these manifold elements of such dynamic context. This article offers an overview of the sales prospecting effort and sheds light on how firms generate superior performance by managing three interconnected elements. The marketing team (e.g., generating leads), salesperson competence (e.g., individual and team competence), and the firm being ready to deploy sales structure (e.g., sales platform) result in superior performance. By thinking outside the box, the authors propose the Salespeople Prospecting Framework with multiple associations based on previous marketing, sales, and retail research. The authors discuss implications for managing the sales funnel and offer suggestions for further research investigation.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework to distinguish between various types of antecedents and consequences of impulse buying. The authors tested it using a meta-analytical approach. Design/methodology/approach The authors examined 12 databases and analyzed 178 relationships in 100 articles. For the quantitative data analysis, the authors used the coefficient of correlation r as a metric to measure the effect size of the studied scope variables. Findings The findings of this meta-analysis demonstrated significant relation of antecedents and consequences of the impulse buying behavior, such as consumer impulsiveness (r = 0.464), materialistic consumption (r = 0.344), purchase pleasure (r = 0.270), hedonic value (r = 0.311), income (r = 0.703), gender (r = 0.150), age (r = −0.062), store atmosphere (r = 0.166), decision-making (r = 0.703) and positive emotions (r = 0.323). Research limitations/implications This meta-analysis reviewed relationships found worldwide in the literature, expanding and improving the current knowledge. The meta-analysis identified ways that research on impulse buying is lacking and presented suggestions for the elaboration of new studies to allow future researchers to better define their agendas. Practical implications This meta-analysis brings important questions, such as impulse buying behavior is associated not only with consumer impulsiveness but also with materialistic consumption. Originality/value This research tested the impact of the antecedents and consequences of impulse buying and presented important results through this meta-analytical review. This meta-analysis contributes to the marketing literature, with a set of empirical generalizations, including relationship coefficients and calculated fail-safe numbers.

Resumo A literatura apresenta lacunas da utilização das competências, recursos e capacidades (exploitation) em conjunto com a exploração de novas competências (exploration) para o alcance do desempenho. Pouco se conhece sobre como as dimensões de exploitation e exploration deveriam ser analisadas, tais como separadamente, por meio de continuum, em sequência, por meio interativo ou por (in)congruência. Dado à ausência de comprovação de como essas duas dimensões podem elucidar a performance, o problema que surge é: Como a congruência das dimensões de ambidestria podem elevar o desempenho? O objetivo do trabalho foi examinar como a congruência entre dualidades afeta o desempenho. Por meio de um levantamento com 227 empresas de software, nós testamos hipóteses relacionadas à congruência e interação dos dois fatores da ambidestria. Os resultados mostraram que (a) as dimensões de exploration e exploitation; (b) a ambidestria média e (c) a ambidestria por meio de um continuum explicam o desempenho, que (d) a interação exploitation × exploration não tem relação com o resultado da organização e que (e) a convergência de ambas as dimensões aumenta o resultado organizacional. Os achados são coerentes com a tese de Gibson e Birkinshaw (2004) e rejeitam as teses de Gupta, Smith e Shalley (2006) e Cao, Gedajlovic e Zhang (2009).

Abstract The literature presents some shortcomings in the use of current skills, resources, and capabilities (exploitation) with the exploration of new competencies to achieve performance. Little is known about how the dimensions of exploitation and exploration should be analyzed; whether separately, by continuum, in sequence, through interactive or (in) congruence. Given the lack of empirical evidence of how these two dimensions can elucidate performance, the problem that arises is: How can the ambidextrous congruence boost performance? The purpose of the paper was to examine how the congruence between dualities affects organizational performance. Through a survey of 227 software companies, we tested hypotheses related to the congruence and interaction of the two ambidextrous factors. The results showed that (a) the dimensions of exploration and exploitation, average ambidexterity, and ambidexterity by means of a continuum explain the performance; (b) exploitation vs. exploration interaction is not related to the organization's result; and (c) the convergence of both dimensions increases the organizational result. The findings are consistent with the thesis of Gibson and Birkinshaw (2004) and reject the thesis of Gupta, Smith and Shalley (2006) and Cao, Gedajlovic and Zhang (2009).

Resumo As demandas solicitadas pelos clientes conduzem os funcionários da linha de frente a buscar objetivos simultâneos que competem entre si por recursos. Funcionários que demonstram a capacidade de atender objetivos simultâneos são denominados ambidestros e são favorecidos quando há fatores organizacionais que os permitem e os encorajam a fazer seu próprio julgamento sobre como aplicar os recursos na conquista dos objetivos. Neste trabalho, ampliamos a discussão da ambidestria do nível organizacional para o nível individual e propomos que a ambidestria provisão de serviços e cross-/up-selling apresenta um efeito condicional ao explicar o desempenho. Especificamente, este efeito condicional significa que a ambidestria é mediadora do efeito da locomoção no desempenho, sendo esse efeito indireto moderado pelo sistema de controle de vendas. Fizemos uma pesquisa descritiva do tipo survey com 118 funcionários de laboratórios. Os achados mostraram que a orientação para locomoção se relaciona positivamente com o comportamento ambidestro do indivíduo; que a presença de um sistema de controle por resultado modera a relação locomoção-ambidestria, amplificando-a; e que essa relação moderada foi mediada pela ambidestria, quando explicando o desempenho.

Abstract The demands imposed by customers lead front line employees to pursue simultaneous goals that compete for resources. Employees who demonstrate this ability to pursue simultaneous goals are called ambidextrous and are favored when there are organizational factors that enable and encourage them to make their own judgment on how to apply the resources to achieve the goals. In this paper, we extend the discussion of ambidexterity from the organizational level to the individual level. We propose that service provision and cross-/up-selling ambidexterity has an indirect conditional effect in terms of explaining performance. Specifically, this conditional effect means that ambidexterity mediates the effect of locomotion on performance and this indirect effect is moderated by sales control systems. We surveyed 118 laboratory employees and results indicated that locomotion is positively related to individuals’ ambidextrous behavior in a relationship moderated by outcome-based control systems, which amplify it. The results also demonstrated that this moderated relationship was mediated by ambidexterity, when explaining performance.

Resumo Neste artigo sugerimos que a ambidestria do funcionário medeia o efeito negativo do estresse de trabalho no desempenho com vendas. Nós ampliamos a literatura sobre ambidestria, não mais posicionando-a como mediadora dos efeitos já conhecidos do contexto, do desenvolvimento do produto, da flexibilidade estratégica e da natureza dinâmica do ambiente, mas sim como mediadora dos efeitos do estresse sobre o desempenho. Um levantamento foi realizado com 307 funcionários de linha de frente que vendem produtos e serviços e gerenciam carteiras de clientes em instituições bancárias. Os achados mostraram que a capacidade do funcionário em balancear as atividades de provisão de serviços aos clientes e as atividades de vendas configura ambidestria, desencadeando maiores níveis de desempenho. Os resultados também demonstraram que o efeito negativo da percepção de ambiguidade de papéis sobre as medidas de desempenho (satisfação no trabalho e desempenho com vendas) é mediado pelo comportamento ambidestro do funcionário.

Abstract In this paper we suggest that an employee's ambidexterity mediates the negative effect of job stress on sales performance. The traditional literature posits ambidexterity as mediator in the context of product development, strategic flexibility and dynamic nature of the environment. We extend the ambidexterity literature by positing it as a mediator in the relationship between stress and sales performance. A survey was developed with 307 frontline bank employees who sell products and services and manage client accounts in banks. The findings showed that the ability of the salespeople to balance provision activities with sales services activities improves ambidexterity, which in turn has a positive impact on performance. The results also showed that the negative effect of perception of role ambiguity about performance measurement (work satisfaction and sales) is mediated by a salesperson's ambidextrous behavior.

RESUMO Na literatura, há evidência de que quanto maior o perfil de locomoção do vendedor, maior o desempenho com vendas. Neste artigo, propomos que o sistema de controle por comportamento, quando elevado, prejudica essa associação positiva devido à grande quantidade de acompanhamento das ações dos vendedores, inibindo-os. Além do mais, propomos que essa relação moderada pelo sistema de controle se torna negativa (piorando) quando há alta experiência do vendedor. Essa moderação tripla pode ser explicada pelo conflito da organização com a forma de controlar os vendedores mais experientes, congruente com a literatura sobre socialização organizacional. Uma survey com vendedores de lojas de varejo foi realizada. Os resultados demonstraram que a orientação para locomoção do vendedor é um preditor do desempenho, mas que o alto nível do sistema de controle por comportamento reduz esse efeito. Além do mais, quando existe maior experiência, essa relação piora, diminuindo o desempenho.

ABSTRACT There is evidence that the greater the seller's level of locomotion, the greater the sales performance. In this paper, we proposed that the high level of behavior-based control system undermines this positive relationship, due to the large amount of follow-ups of sellers' actions, inhibiting them. Furthermore, we proposed that this moderated relationship becomes negative (worse) when there is high level of experience. This three-way moderation effect is explained by the organizational conflict from the control to the salespeople, which is consistent with literature on organizational socialization. We did a survey with salespeople working on retail stores. The results demonstrated that the seller's level of locomotion is a predictor of sales performance, but that the high level of behavior-based control system reduces it. In addition, when there is a high experience, this relationship worsens, reducing the performance.

RESUMEN En la literatura, hay evidencias de que cuanto mayor el perfil de locomoción del vendedor, mayor es el desempeño en las ventas. En este artículo, proponemos que el sistema de control por comportamiento, cuando es elevado, perjudica esa asociación positiva debido al gran seguimiento de las acciones de los vendedores, que termina inhibiéndolos. Además, proponemos que esa relación moderada por el sistema de control resulta negativa (empeorando) cuando se trata de vendedores de gran experiencia. Esa moderación triple se puede explicar por el conflicto de la organización con la forma de controlar a los vendedores más experimentados, lo que es congruente con la literatura sobre socialización organizacional. Los resultados de la encuesta realizada con vendedores de tiendas minoristas demostraron que la orientación a locomoción del vendedor es un predictor del desempeño, pero que el alto nivel del sistema de control por comportamiento reduce ese efecto. Asimismo, cuando existe mayor experiencia, esa relación empeora, disminuyendo el desempeño.

Resumo Quais são os principais preditores do desenvolvimento dos laços imersos? Qual é o impacto das variáveis conhecimento do fornecedor, conhecimento do cliente e laços imersos no desenvolvimento de inovações no fornecedor no segmento de cooperativismo? Qual é o papel moderador dos laços imersos no desenvolvimento de inovações no fornecedor? Este estudo reúne 126 respostas dos fornecedores de uma grande cooperativa agrícola. Os resultados evidenciaram que há impacto positivo dos laços imersos no desenvolvimento da inovação e no conhecimento da inovação. Ademais, a pesquisa mostrou que há associação significativa entre o conhecimento dos fornecedores e a inovação, a qual é moderada pelo laço imerso. Isto evidencia que o laço imerso amplifica a capacidade de desenvolver inovação.

Abstract What are the main predictors of the development of embedded ties? What are the impacts of supplier-knowledge, client-knowledge, and embedded-tie variables on the development of supplier innovation in the cooperative sector? What is the moderating role of embedded ties in the development of supplier innovation? This study brings together 126 responses from suppliers of a large agro-industrial cooperative. The results show that embedded ties have a positive impact on the development of innovation and knowledge for innovation. Furthermore, a significant association between supplier knowledge and innovation was found, which is moderated by embedded ties. Data show that embedded ties amplify the ability to develop innovation in industrial relationships.

Resumen ¿Cuáles son los principales determinantes del desarrollo de los vínculos enraizados? ¿Cuál es el impacto de las variables conocimiento del proveedor, conocimiento del cliente y vínculos enraizados en el desarrollo de innovaciones del proveedor en el sector de cooperativismo? ¿Cuál es el papel moderador de los vínculos enraizados en el desarrollo de innovaciones del proveedor? Este estudio reúne 126 respuestas de proveedores de una gran cooperativa agrícola. Los resultados muestran que existe una influencia positiva de los vínculos enraizados en el desarrollo y el conocimiento de la innovación. Además, se comprueba que hay una relación significativa entre el conocimiento de los proveedores y la innovación, la cual es moderada por los vínculos enraizados. Así, el vínculo enraizado incrementa la capacidad de desarrollar innovaciones.

Resumo Kashyap, Antia e Frazier (2011) estudaram os efeitos dos incentivos extracontratuais e do monitoramento sobre enforcement. Heide, Wathne e Rokkan (2007) encontraram uma interação significativa entre os tipos de monitoramento, prejudicando o oportunismo. Este artigo amplia a discussão dos efeitos de monitoramento e dos incentivos extracontratuais sobre o desempenho, algo ainda não encontrado na literatura. Estudando uma relação industrial entre lojista e administradora de shopping, os resultados mostraram que a dependência na expertise do shopping, o monitoramento e a política de compliance interferem no desempenho. Verificou-se também que o monitoramento interage nessas relações diretas, moderando-as, prejudicando ou amplificando o desempenho. Os resultados mostraram que associações curvilineares em forma de U-invertido explicaram melhor o desempenho.

Abstract Kashyap, Antia and Frazier (2011) studied the effects of extra contractual incentives and monitoring over franchisee enforcement. Heide, Wathne and Rokkan (2007) found significant interactions among the types of monitoring, damaging opportunism. This paper extends prior discussion of monitoring and incentives over performance, for which we did not find evidence in the literature. We studied an industrial relationship between a store and its shopping center management. The results showed that the dependence on shopping center expertise, monitoring and compliance policy were associated with performance. Second, monitoring interferes in these direct relationships, moderating them. Specifically, the moderating effect decreases or increases store performance. Third, results show these inverted U-shaped associations better explained performance.

In sales, working together as a team for achieving individual performance is a relevant element. In this paper, we suggest a theoretical framework that analyzes the impact of team potency on subjective performance, according to two mechanisms: self-efficacy and adaptability. The hypotheses suggest that (a) team potency has a positive relationship with self-efficacy and adaptability; self-efficacy and adaptability impact performance (b) directly and (c) indirectly, through a mediating role; and (d) interpersonal climate quality moderates these associations. We did a national survey with 290 salespeople organized in 101 teams from a water purification company. We used multilevel analyses and results suggested that sales team potency has a main effect on self-efficacy and adaptability. Second, results showed that self-efficacy and adaptability explain subjective performance. Third, self-efficacy and adaptability mediate the association between team potency and individual performance. Fourth, we did not find support for a moderating role of interpersonal climate quality on team potency. Final remarks and future research are discussed in the paper.

RESUMO Objetivo: Sugerimos uma interação entre a teoria da função de atitude (ajuste social ou expressão de valores), a teoria de automonitoramento e a proeminência da marca (baixa ou alta) para explicar a avaliação de anúncios por meio dos consumidores. Originalidade/lacuna/relevância/implicações: Não evidenciamos estudos que relacionassem os efeitos comportamentais da função de atitude, automonitoramento e proeminência da marca ao comportamento do consumidor, embora a literatura estrangeira nos proporcionasse poucos estudos relacionando função de atitude ou automonitoramento à visibilidade da marca, no entanto sem trazer essa relação tripla utilizada. Principais aspectos metodológicos: Lançamos três hipóteses em dois experimentos fatoriais tipo 2 × 2 × 2 entre grupos elaborados com anúncios de produtos de luxo. Síntese dos principais resultados: Os achados mostraram um efeito interativo entre a teoria da função de atitude e a proeminência da marca, e isso significa que a marca influencia as avaliações dos consumidores sobre a lealdade e a intenção de compra em anúncios com uma atitude fundamentada na expressão de valores. Os resultados indicaram uma interação entre automonitoramento e proeminência da marca. Há maiores níveis de lealdade e atitude para os anúncios sem a proeminência da marca e com baixos níveis de automonitoramento e uma interação entre função de atitude e automonitoramento para explicar o valor percebido. Principais considerações/conclusões: O campo do marketing pode fazer uso dos resultados via comunicação, anunciando produtos de alta proeminência da marca com foco na expressão de valores e para indivíduos com menor automonitoramento, objetivando maior influência da intenção.

ABSTRACT Purpose: We suggest interaction between the Functional Theory of Attitude (social setting or values of expression), the Self-Monitoring Theory and brand prominence (low or high) in order to explain the advertising assessment by consumers. Originality/gap/relevance/implications: Although foreign literature review provides a few studies relating Functional Attitude or Self-monitoring to brand prominence, none were found relating behavioral effects of the three aforementioned elements to the customer behavior. Key methodological aspects: We proposed three interactive hypotheses in two factorial experiments type 2 × 2 × 2 among groups designed with luxury product ads. Summary of key results: The findings showed an interactive effect between Functional Theory of Attitude and brand prominence. This result means that the brand influences consumer evaluations of loyalty and purchase intention for advertising with an attitude based on the value expression. The results indicated an interaction between self-monitoring and brand prominence. There are higher levels of loyalty and attitude for consumers when advertising did not present brand prominence and did present high levels of self-monitoring. We also found an interaction effect between functional attitude and self-monitoring, explaining perceived value. Key considerations/conclusions: The marketing practitioners can use the results via communications, advertising products of high brand prominence focused on the value expression and individuals with lower self-control, aiming greater influence on buying intention.

RESUMEN Objetivo: En este trabajo se sugiere una interacción entre la Teoría de la Función de la Actitud (el ajuste social y los valores de expresión), la Teoría del Auto-monitoreo y la prominencia de la marca (baja o alta) para explicar la evaluación de los anuncios a través de los consumidores. Originalidad/laguna/relevancia/implicaciones: No se evidenciaron estudios que relacionen los efectos de comportamiento de la Función de la Actitud, el autocontrol y la importancia de la marca al comportamiento del consumidor, aunque la literatura extranjera proporcionara pocos estudios relacionando Función de actitud o autocontrol a la visibilidad de la marca, no obstante, sin traer esta relación triple utilizada. Principales aspectos metodológicos: Se lanzaron tres hipótesis en dos experimentos factoriales tipo 2 × 2 × 2 entre los grupos elaborados con anuncios de productos de lujo. Síntesis de los principales resultados: Los resultados mostraron un efecto interactivo entre la Teoría de la Función de la Actitud y la prominencia de la marca, esto significa que la marca influye en las evaluaciones de los consumidores sobre la lealtad y la intención de compra en los anuncios con una actitud basada en la expresión de los valores. Los resultados indicaron una interacción entre el autocontrol y la prominencia de la marca. Hay mayores niveles de lealtad y actitud ante los anuncios sin la prominencia de la marca y con bajos niveles de autocontrol y una interacción entre Función de actitud y auto-monitoreo para explicar el valor percibido. Principales consideraciones/conclusiones: El campo de la comercialización puede utilizar los resultados a través de las comunicaciones, anunciando los productos de alta prominencia de la marca enfocando la expresión de los valores y para las personas con menor autocontrol, con el objetivo de mayor influencia de la intención.

RESUMO Zhao e Pechmann (2007)usaram a teoria de foco regulatório e a estrutura da mensagem e mostraram que houve, na média, 14,4% de aumento da intenção de não fumar entre sujeitos expostos a mensagens de comunicação congruentes com o perfil do indivíduo. Neste artigo, ampliamos o campo do estudo aplicando o foco regulatório nas comunicações contra consumo de álcool. Sugerimos que a intenção de beber e dirigir e de convencer os amigos a não beber e dirigir é condicionada à emoção (culpa vs. vergonha), à estrutura da mensagem (positivo vs. negativo) e à interdependência do indivíduo (eu vs. outro sofrendo danos). No primeiro experimento, não apenas o foco regulatório modera a relação entre beber e convencer os amigos a não beber e dirigir, como também o frame da mensagem interagiu. No segundo experimento, a emoção e interdependência do indivíduo interagem com o hábito de beber álcool e afetam ambas as variáveis dependentes.

ABSTRACT Zhao and Pechmann (2007)used regulatory focus theory and message framing, to find an average 14.4% increase in the intention not to smoke when the campaign was consistent with the profile of individuals. In this article, we expand that study to apply regulatory focus theory to campaigns against alcohol consumption. We suggest that the intention to drink and drive and the intention to convince friends not to drink and drive are determined by emotion (guilt vs. shame), message framing (positive vs. negative framing), and individual interdependence (me vs. others affected). In the first experiment, we found that not only does regulatory focus moderate the relationship between drinking and persuading friends not to drink and drive, but message framing also has an impact. In the second experiment, we found that emotion and individual interdependence has an effect on the habit of drinking alcohol and affects both dependent variables.

RESUMEN Zhao y Pechmann (2007)usaron la teoría de foco regulatorio y la estructura del mensaje y mostraron que hubo, en promedio, 14,4% de aumento de la intención de no fumar entre sujetos expuestos a mensajes de comunicación congruentes con el perfil del individuo. En este artículo, ampliamos el campo de estudio aplicando el foco regulatorio en las comunicaciones contra el consumo de alcohol. Sugerimos que la intención de beber y conducir y de convencer a los amigos a no beber y conducir está condicionada a la emoción (culpa vs. vergüenza), a la estructura del mensaje(positivo vs. negativo) y a la interdependencia del individuo (yo vs. otro sufriendo daños). En el primer experimento, no sólo el foco regulatorio modera la relación entre beber y convencer a los amigos a no beber y conducir, como también el frame del mensaje interactuó. En el segundo experimento, la emoción e interdependencia del individuo interactúa con el hábito de beber alcohol y afectan ambas variables dependientes.
