RESUMEN Las bacterias son capaces de desarrollar mecanismos de resistencia a los antimicrobianos, aquellos adquiridos y transmisibles son los más significativos debido al potencial de diseminación. La aparición de Salmonella enterica con resistencia a C3aG, quinolonas y a colistina representa una amenaza progresiva. El objetivo fue determinar la resistencia a los antimicrobianos y la presencia de los mecanismos de resistencia plasmídicos a quinolonas, β-lactámicos y colistina en aislados de Salmonella provenientes de la vigilancia integrada de enteropatógenos. Fueron estudiadas 501 cepas de Salmonella spp. colectadas entre los años 2020 y 2021, por la red de enteropatógenos del Laboratorio Central de Salud Pública. Se investigó la resistencia a las C3aG, quinolonas y colistina, en aislamientos de humanos, alimentos, animales de consumo y ambiente. Las cepas estudiadas exhibieron resistencia a tetraciclina (32,5%), ácido nalidíxico (29%), ampicilina (13,2%), nitrofurantoína (11,6%), C3aG (7,2%), cotrimoxazol (5,8%), ciprofloxacina (2,2%). El 18% (90/501) presentaron resistencia trasferible por plásmidos, fueron detectados 111 genes (71 cepas con un gen, 17 cepas dos genes y 2 cepas tres genes diferentes). Qnr B: 41,1% (37/90), mcr-1: 38,9% (35/90), CMY: 23,3% (21/90), CTX-M: 16,7% (15/90) y Qnr S: 3,3% (3/90). Heidelberg fue el serovar predominante en muestras de pollo y el mayor portador de genes de resistencia de tipo CMY y mcr-1. La detección de genes en alimentos y animales de consumo, que pueden transmitirse fácilmente al ser humano es motivo de alerta y resalta la importancia de continuar fortaleciendo la vigilancia multisectorial y multidisciplinaria.

ABSTRACT Bacteria can develop antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, those acquired and transmissible being the most significant due to the potential for dissemination. The emergence of Salmonella enterica with resistance to third-generation cephalosporins, quinolones, and colistin represents a progressive threat. The objective was to determine antimicrobial resistance and the presence of plasmid resistance mechanisms to quinolones, β-lactams, and colistin in Salmonella isolates from integrated surveillance of enteropathogens. Five hundred and one strains of Salmonella spp. collected between 2020 and 2021 were studied by the enteropathogen network of the Laboratorio Central de Salud Publica (Central Public Health Laboratory). Research was conducted on the resistance to third-generation cephalosporins, quinolones, and colistin, isolated from humans, foodstuffs, animals for consumption, and the environment. The strains studied exhibited resistance to tetracycline (32.5%), nalidixic acid (29%), ampicillin (13.2%), nitrofurantoin (11.6%), third-generation cephalosporins (7.2%), cotrimoxazole (5.8%), and ciprofloxacin (2.2%). Eighteen percent (90/501) presented plasmid-transferable resistance, 111 genes were detected (71 strains with one gene, 17 strains with two genes, and 2 strains with three different genes). Qnr B: 41.1% (37/90), mcr-1: 38.9% (35/90), CMY: 23.3% (21/90), CTX-M: 16.7% (15/90), and Qnr S: 3.3% (3/90). Heidelberg was the predominant serovar in chicken samples and the largest carrier of CMY and mcr-1 resistance genes. The detection of genes in foodstuffs and animals for consumption, which can be easily transmitted to humans, is a cause for alarm and highlights the importance of continuing to strengthen multisectoral and multidisciplinary surveillance.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Collection media of clinical samples with the capacity to denature viruses reduce the risk of contagion during transportation and processing. Objective: To use the nucleic acids transport media (NATM) in nasopharyngeal swab samples collected for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2. Methods: An experimental study was conducted to demonstrate the medium capacity to inactivate viral infectivity. Zika virus (ZIKV), of biosafety level 2, was used as an enveloped virus model. The clinical performance of the NATM for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 was evaluated. A ZIKV strain propagated in the Vero cell line was used and, prior to cells infection, ZIKV was in contact at different intervals (2; 15, and 30 min) with pure NATM; subsequently, serial dilutions (10-1-10-4) were performed. Viral inactivation was evaluated by RT-PCR in the supernatant and the collected cells when the propagation period was completed. CITOSWAB® VTM was used as reference to estimate the clinical performance of the NATM in 30 nasopharyngeal swabs collected for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Results: ZIKV remained infectious at inoculum dilutions of ≥ 10-2, regardless of contact time. Clinical specificity and sensitivity of the NATM for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 were 100%, respectively. Conclusions: Results suggest that ZIKV positive clinical samples at dilutions ≤ 10-1 of the NATM can be safely handled, which could potentially be applied to the molecular diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2.

RESUMEN Introducción: Los medios de colecta de muestras clínicas con capacidad de desnaturalizar virus reducen los riesgos de contagio durante el transporte y procesamiento. Objetivo: Emplear el medio de transporte de ácidos nucleicos (TAN) en muestras de exudado nasofaríngeo colectadas para el diagnóstico de SARS-CoV-2. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio experimental para demostrar la capacidad del medio de inactivar la infectividad viral. Se tomó como modelo de virus envuelto el virus Zika (VZk), cuyo nivel de bioseguridad es 2. Se evaluó el desempeño clínico del medio TAN para el diagnóstico de SARS-CoV-2. Se empleó una cepa del VZk propagada en la línea celular Vero y, previo a la infección de las células, el VZk se puso en contacto a intervalos de tiempo diferentes (2; 15 y 30 min) con el medio TAN puro; y luego se realizaron diluciones seriadas (10-1-10-4). La inactivación viral se evaluó por RT-PCR, en el sobrenadante y células colectadas, al culminar el periodo de propagación. El desempeño clínico del medio TAN se estimó tomando como referencia el CITOSWAB® VTM, en 30 exudados nasofaríngeos colectados para diagnóstico de la infección por SARS-CoV-2. Resultados: El VZk preservó su infectividad a diluciones del inóculo ≥ 10-2, independientemente del tiempo de contacto. La sensibilidad y especificidad clínica del medio TAN para el diagnóstico de SARS-CoV-2 fueron del 100 %, respectivamente. Conclusiones: Los resultados sugieren que muestras clínicas positivas a VZk en diluciones ≤ 10-1 del medio TAN pueden ser manipuladas de forma segura, lo que pudiera aplicarse potencialmente al diagnóstico molecular del SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract The use of high-flow nasal therapy (HFNT) in patients with severe acute respiratory failure (SARF) due to COVID-19 pneu monia (NCOVID-19) is debated. Given the lack of beds in Intensive Care Units in the Public Health System of the Province of Neuquén, their use was implemented in general wards. This restrospective multicenter study was carried out to describe the experience of using HNFT in patients with SARF due to NCOVID-19. The primary outcome was the frequency of successful weaning from HFNT and in-hospital mortality (IHM). Two hundred ninety-nine patients were analyzed; 120 (40.1%) were successfully withdrawn from HFNT. This failed in 59.8% (179), 44.1% (132) required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), and 15.7% (47) was not candidates for intubation. A ROX index ≥ 5 at 6 h after initiation was associated with the success of HFNT (OR 0.26 [IC 95% 0.15-0.46] p<0.0001). The general IHM was 48.5% (145/299), 70.4% (93/132) in patients with IMV, 4.2% (5/120) died after successful weaning from HFNT and 100% (47/47) in the group not candidates for intubation. Patients with TNAFO had a statistically significant decrease in MIH and days of hospitalization. TNAFO in general wards achieved a decrease in the use of IMV, with a reduction in mortality and days of stay in hospitalized for NCOVID-19 with SARF.

Resumen El uso de terapia nasal de alto flujo (TNAFO) en pacientes con insuficiencia respiratoria aguda grave (IRAG) por neumonía COVID-19 (NCOVID-19) es debatido. Ante la falta de camas en Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos en el Sistema de Salud Pública de la Provincia del Neuquén, se implementó su uso en salas generales. Con el objetivo de describir la experiencia de uso de la TNAFO en pacientes con IRAG por NCOVID-19, se llevó a cabo este estudio retrospectivo multicéntrico. El resultado primario fue la frecuencia de destete exitoso de TNAFO y la mortalidad intrahospitalaria (MIH). Se analizaron 299 pacientes, de éstos, 120 (40.1%) fueron retirados con éxito de la TNAFO. Esta fracasó en 59.8% (179), 44.1% (132) requirió ventilación mecánica invasiva (VMI) y 15.7% (47) no eran candidatos a la intubación. Un índice ROX ≥ 5 a las 6 h después del inicio, se asoció con el éxito de la TNAFO (OR 0.26 [IC 95% 0.15-0.46] p<0.0001). La MIH general fue del 48.5% (145/299), 70.4% (93/132) en aquellos con VMI, 4.2% (5/120) falleció post destete exitoso de la TNAFO y 100% (47/47) en el grupo no candidatos a la intubación. Los pacientes con TNAFO tuvieron una disminución estadísticamente significativa en la MIH y en días de internación. El uso de TNAFO en salas generales logró una reducción en la utilización de VMI, con una reducción de la mortalidad y días de estada en los internados por NCOVID-19 con IRAG.

ABSTRACT Phytopathogenic fungi attack many agricultural crops such as yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis Saint Hil.). An innovative alternative for pest control is the use of biocontrol fungi of Trichoderma genus. The objectives of the present work were to isolate the fungal agents that cause foliar lesions in yerba mate, and to evaluate the antagonistic capacity of native Trichoderma sp. isolates against pathogens in this crop. From diseased plant-tissues, a phytopathogenic fungus belonging to Alternaria alternata species was isolated and identified morphologically and molecularly. Pathogenicity assays were done on yerba mate plants in triplicate. Superficial mechanical lesions were made on them and the phytopathogenic isolation obtained (conidia and mycelium) was inoculated to evaluate their phytopathogenic capacity. New dual culture methods were determined to evaluate in vitro antagonism of Trichoderma. The in vitro biocontrol capacity of 30 Trichoderma isolates was evaluated against the phytopathogenic isolation obtained. As a positive control, a strain isolated from a commercial fungicide product based on T. harzianum was used. It was determined that 18 of the 30 isolates of Trichoderma inhibited the growth of the phytopathogen A. alternata by more than 50%, and presented statistically significant differences with respect to the positive control. These results confirm the effectiveness of using native biocontrol isolates adapted to the climatic and soil conditions where the phytopathogenic microorganisms are found.

RESUMEN Los hongos fitopatógenos afectan a cultivos agrícolas, como la yerba mate (Ilexparaguariensis Saint Hil.). Una alternativa innovadora para el control de plagas es el empleo de hongos biocontroladores del género Trichoderma. Los objetivos del presente trabajo fueron aislar los agentes fúngicos causantes de lesiones foliares en yerba mate, y evaluar la capacidad antagónica de los aislamientos nativos de Trichoderma sp. frente a patógenos en este cultivo. A partir del corte, desinfección y siembra del tejido vegetal enfermo, se aisló e identificó morfológica y molecularmente un hongo fitopatógeno perteneciente a la especie Alternaria alternata. Se ensayaron pruebas de patogenicidad en plantas de yerba mate por triplicado. Se realizaron lesiones mecánicas superficiales en ellas y se inoculó el aislamiento fitopatógeno obtenido (conidios y micelio) para evaluar su capacidad fitopatógena. Se determinaron nuevas variantes de cultivo dual para evaluar la capacidad antagónica biocontroladora en condiciones in vitro. Se evaluó la capacidad biocontroladora in vitro de 30 aislamientos de Trichoderma frente al aislamiento fitopatógeno obtenido. Como control positivo se utilizó una cepa aislada de un producto fungicida comercial a base de T. harzianum. Se determinó que 18 de los 30 aislamientos de Trichoderma lograron inhibir en más del 50% el crecimiento del fitopatógeno A. alternata y presentaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas con respecto al control positivo. Estos resultados reafirman la efectividad de utilizar aislamientos biocontroladores nativos ya adaptados a las condiciones edafo-climáticas del ambiente en donde se encuentra el microorganismo fitopatógeno a controlar biológicamente.

Resumen En el presente trabajo se proponen estrategias de restauración del bosque de Amburana cearen sis (Allemao) A.C. Sm. (roble criollo) ubicado en la sierra de Tartagal (Salta, Argentina) me diante la implementación y adecuación de técnicas de regeneración natural asistida. Amburana cearensis es una especie de valiosa madera categorizada en peligro de extinción. Las estrategias y técnicas diseñadas surgen del estudio florístico realizado a nivel de comunidad, donde se de terminó la composición florística del bosque, el número de especies, su abundancia y densidad. Las estrategias propuestas en este trabajo podrían ser replicadas en otras áreas del extremo norte argentino que albergan bosques de A. cearensis en similares condiciones de vulnerabilidad.

Summary This paper proposes restoration strategies for the Amburana cearensis (Allemao) A.C. Sm. (“roble criollo”) located in the Sierra de Tartagal (Salta, Argentina) through the implementation and adaptation of assisted natural regeneration techniques. Amburana cearensis is a valuable timber species categorized as endangered. The strategies and techniques designed arise from the floristic study carried out at the community level, where the floristic composition of the forest, the number of species, their abundance and density were determined. The strategies proposed in this work could be replicated in other areas of northern Argentina that harbor A. cearensis forests in similar conditions of vulnerability.

Summary Background and aims : Acrostichum danaeifolium is a widely distributed species in the Neotropics, growing in freshwater or saltwater habitats. In Argentina and Paraguay are scarce records cited by previous papers. The objective of this work is to study A. danaeifolium for Argentina and Paraguay, emphasizing the review of its distribution and the history of the botanical collections of the species. M&M : Specimens deposited in national and international herbaria and collected during monitoring tasks in the Río Pilcomayo National Park (Formosa, Argentina) were studied. Also, records were consulted in the GBIF and iNaturalist databases. The analysis of the diagnostic characters was carried out under a stereoscopic magnifying glass. Results and Conclusions : The diagnostic characters of A. danaeifolium are illustrated, and a map of the species distribution in Argentina and Paraguay is provided. We corroborate that the A. danaeifolium populations registered to date for both countries are scarce and are restricted to the Chaco Oriental district, where they grow associated with floodplains such as river banks and freshwater lagoons. The specimens found in the Río Pilcomayo National Park represent the first record of the species in a protected area, the first record in Formosa province, the most boreal record of Argentina and the first collection in the country in 70 years. Due to the intense deforestation recorded in the Chaco Oriental district in recent decades, the RPNP takes on special relevance for the conservation of the species.

Resumen Introducción y objetivos : Acrostichum danaeifolium es una especie ampliamente distribuida en el Neotrópico, que crece en hábitats de agua dulce o salada. En Argentina y Paraguay son escasos los registros citados por artículos previos. El objetivo del presente trabajo es estudiar a A. danaeifolium para Argentina y Paraguay haciendo énfasis en la revisión de su distribución y la historia de las colecciones botánicas de la especie. M&M : Se estudiaron especímenes depositados en herbarios nacionales e internacionales y coleccionados durante tareas de monitoreo en el Parque Nacional Río Pilcomayo (Formosa, Argentina), y se consultaron registros en las bases de datos GBIF e iNaturalist. El análisis de los caracteres diagnósticos fue realizado bajo lupa estereoscópica. Resultados y conclusiones : Se ilustran los caracteres diagnósticos de A. danaeifolium y se provee un mapa de la distribución en Argentina y Paraguay. Se corrobora que las poblaciones de A. danaeifolium registradas hasta el momento para ambos países son escasas y se restringen al distrito del Chaco oriental, donde crecen asociadas a terrenos inundables como márgenes de ríos y lagunas de agua dulce. Los especímenes hallados en el Parque Nacional Río Pilcomayo representan el primer registro de la especie en un área protegida y para la provincia de Formosa, el registro más boreal para Argentina y la primer colección de la especie para el país en 70 años. Debido a la intensa deforestación que atravesó el distrito del Chaco oriental en las últimas décadas, el PNRP cobra especial relevancia para la conservación de la especie.

Abstract Applying the Covariance-driven Stochastic Subspace Identification method (SSI-COV) involves uncertainties in the numerical process of identifying modal parameters in a system. The main issue is that the method does not compute the uncertainty in the results, which is required in some problems such as outlier detection. Currently, one method is available to assess the uncertainty in modal parameters obtained using the SSI-COV. This method based on the sensitivity analysis of the modal parameters to perturbations in the collected data and is efficient but highly complex for its computational implementation. Thus, this article presents a validation of the uncertainty results obtained with this procedure through the uncertainty limits obtained using the Bootstrap technique. The validation is performed on the modal parameters of a numerical beam-type structure with controlled noise levels and the modal parameters of a concrete block of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam. The uncertainty limits obtained using the two methodologies showed similarities in the two examples, which allowed validating the sensitivity analysis procedure.

Resumen En este artículo se presenta la calibración del modelo de elementos finitos de un puente curvo en concreto en Colombia mediante la utilización del software Ansys y mediciones de vibraciones ambientales. La ventaja de este software es que no requiere de ningún otro software adicional para llevar a cabo el proceso de optimización, mientras que la utilización de mediciones ambientales implica en una menor afectación en el funcionamiento normal del puente. Se escogieron las propiedades del concreto del puente y de los elastómeros como variables de calibración. La función objetivo corresponde a la minimización del error en las frecuencias naturales y experimentales. Los resultados muestran que el error inicial en las frecuencias del modelo y experimentales disminuyó hasta menos de un 2%. Mediante un análisis de sensibilidad se pudo observar que para cada tipo de puente se deben determinar cuáles son las variables más críticas de tal facilitando el proceso de optimización.

Abstract Updating structural model is a knowledge field that have been studied in the last decades to guarantee the reliability on the model defined to represent the behavior of a structure, but generally implies the use of different software to carry out the different parts of the process. This paper presents the updating of the finite element model of a curve-alignment reinforced concrete bridge located near to the city of Ubaté in Colombia by using the optimization tool available in software Ansys and ambient vibration measurements. The use of such type of information avoids to carry out forced-vibration test, which affect the normal operation of the bridge. The design variables correspond to the material properties of the concrete and the elastomeric bearings. The objective function corresponds to the minimization of the error between analytical and experimental natural frequencies of the bridge. Results show that the error was decreased to less than 2%. The sensibility analysis allowed to determine which variables are more sensible to affect the natural frequencies in the structure.

Resumen La usabilidad se ha convertido en un atributo fundamental que define la calidad del software. De acuerdo con iso 9241-11:2018, el software es utilizable si permite al usuario lograr objetivos en un contexto específico de uso con eficiencia, efectividad y satisfacción. Uno de los factores que afecta el atributo de eficiencia es la disposición de los elementos en la pantalla, por lo que las pruebas de usabilidad bajo el enfoque de seguimiento del mouse pueden proporcionar información relevante para optimizar al usuario interacción con el sistema. En el presente artículo, se propone un sistema de software para admitir pruebas de usabilidad bajo el enfoque de seguimiento del mouse, específicamente mouse tracking, cuya principal contribución es el análisis por zonas de pantalla y por tareas de una prueba de usuario. Además, el sistema de software permite grabar un video de la sesión del usuario, de tal manera que se pueda hacer un análisis detallado de las diferentes acciones durante la prueba, establecer estadísticas parciales y generales y obtener su representación gráfica. De esta manera, finalmente, es posible conseguir un análisis detallado de la interacción del usuario con las actividades propuestas en el test, mediante el uso de la herramienta.

Abstract Usability has become a fundamental attribute that defines software quality. According to ISO 9241-11: 2018, a piece of software is usable if it allows users to efficiently, effectively, and satisfactorily achieve objectives in a specific context. The layout of the elements on the screen is one of the factors that affect efficiency the most; therefore, usability tests implementing mouse tracking approach can provide relevant information to optimize user interaction with the system. This article proposes a software system to support usability tests implementing mouse tracking, which analyzes screen areas and tasks in a user test. In addition, the software system can record video clips of users’ sessions for multiple purposes: conduct a detailed analysis of user actions during the test, calculate partial and general statistics, and produce graphic representations. As a result, user interaction with the activities in the test can be examined in depth while using the tool.

Hypothyroidism is a clinical and biochemical syndrome. The objectives of this study were to describe and establish the most prevalent clinical and biochemical characteristics at the time of the diagnosis of hypothyroidism in adult women. To do so, a descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was carried out. Two hundred and three clinical histories of women diagnosed with hypothyroidism from the Hospital Escuela de Agudos Dr. Ramón Madariaga, Posadas (Misiones) were selected. The most prevalent clinical feature was asthenia and it was present in 41% (n = 83) of the patients. 46% presented hypertriglyceridemia, 39% hypercholesterolemia, 38% altered fasting glycaemia, 17% hypertension, 23% overweight and 52% obesity. Women with clinical hypothyroidism showed a 5 times higher risk of presenting high levels of triglycerides than women with subclinical hypothyroidism (OR = 5.2; 95% CI = 1.93-14.04). All women presented at least one clinical or biochemical characteristic, being the most frequent, within the latter, hypertriglyceridemia and altered fasting glycaemia.

El hipotiroidismo es un síndrome clínico y bioquímico. Los objetivos del presente trabajo fueron describir y establecer las características clínicas y bioquímicas más prevalentes al momento del diagnóstico de hipotiroidismo en mujeres adultas. Para ello se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo y de corte transversal. Se seleccionaron 203 historias clínicas de mujeres con diagnóstico de hipotiroidismo del Hospital Escuela de Agudos Dr. Ramón Madariaga, Posadas (Misiones). La característica clínica más prevalente fue la astenia y se presentó en el 41% (n=83) de las pacientes. El 46% presentó hipertrigliceridemia, 39% hipercolesterolemia, 38% glucemia en ayunas alterada, 17% hipertensión, 23% sobrepeso y 52% obesidad. Las mujeres con hipotiroidismo clínico mostraron 5 veces más riesgo de presentar triglicéridos elevados que las mujeres con hipotiroidismo subclínico (OR=5,2; IC 95%= 1,93- 14,04). Todas presentaron al menos una característica clínica o bioquímica, siendo las más frecuentes, dentro de estas últimas, la hipertrigliceridemia y la glucemia en ayunas alterada.

Abstract Background: Colonic vascular lesion secondary to verapamil overdose is mediated by free radicals, forming vascular microtrombos and endotoxin generation, being a difficult diagnosis. Clinical Case: A 27-year-old female is admitted with an acute abdomen of 4 days after an event referred for a suicidal attempt due to an overdose of verapamil, operating surgically where there is a right transmural colon necrosis, performing a right hemicolectomy with terminal ileostomy. Conclusions: Recognize and properly treat an acute abdomen, not always reach an adequate diagnosis, so a thorough history could conclude.

Resumen Antecedentes: La lesión vascular colónica secundaria a la sobredosis de verapamilo, es mediada por radicales libres, formando microtrombos vasculares y generación de endotoxinas, siendo un diagnostico difícil. Caso Clínico: Femenino de 27 años, ingresa con abdomen agudo de 4 días posteriores a un evento remitido de intento suicida por sobredosis de verapamilo, interviniéndose quirúrgicamente donde se halla necrosis colónica transmural derecha, realizando hemicolectomía derecha con ileostomía terminal. Conclusiones: Reconocer y tratar de forma adecuada un abdomen agudo, no siempre se suele llegar a un adecuado diagnostico, por lo cual una minuciosa anamnesis lograría concluirlo.

Abstract Recent efforts in the Experimental Field of Mexicali Valley of the National Institute of Agricultural and Livestock Forestry Research have allowed the development of wheat varieties of high yield and industrial quality. Among these superior genotypes is the new bread wheat variety Ñipal F2016, which exceeds the yield of Cachanilla F2000 with 8.1%. It is also resistant to yellow linear rust, resistant to leaf rust, septoria, spica blight and shows good industrial quality. The seed of Ñipal F2016 is available in the Experimental Valley of Mexicali.

Resumen Los esfuerzos recientes en el Campo Experimental Valle de Mexicali del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales Agrícolas y Pecuarias, han permitido el desarrollo de variedades de trigo de alto rendimiento y calidad industrial. Entre estos genotipos superiores esta la nueva variedad de trigo harinero Ñipal F2016 que supera el rendimiento de Cachanilla F2000 con 8.1% además es resistente a roya lineal amarilla, resistente a roya de la hoja, septoria, tizón de la espiga y muestra buena calidad industrial. La semilla de Ñipal F2016 está disponible en el Campo Experimental Valle de Mexicali.

Abstract Best fertilizer management practices such as adopting the right N sidedress timing can reduce N losses by volatilization, thus, raising N-fertilizer recovery and grain yield. To evaluate ammonia (N-NH3 ) losses, N-fertilizer recovery and grain yield as a function of urea sidedress timing in corn, a field study was conducted during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 growing seasons, adopting a complete randomized block design with four replications. Treatments consisted of urea sidedress timing (140 kg N ha-1) at V4, V6, V8, V10, and V12 growth stages, plus a control without sidedress N. The largest N losses by N-NH3 volatilization occurred when urea was applied at V10 or V12 growth stages, reaching losses of 35 and 41 % of the total applied N. Although climatic factors influences N-NH3 volatilization process, crop characteristics such as canopy development also seems to affect N-NH3 losses. Nitrogen application at V4 or V6 growth stages resulted in greater N-fertilizer recovery from urea sidedress, reaching values of 53 %. No increase in corn grain yield was observed with N application at different corn growth stages during the two growing seasons evaluated, most likely due to high N mineralization rates from the soil.
