ABSTRACT. The selection of superior genotypes of soybean entails a simultaneous evaluation of a number of favorable traits that provide a comparatively superior yield. Disregarding the population effect in the statistical model may compromise the estimate of variance components and the prediction of genetic values. The present study was undertaken to investigate the importance of including population effect in the statistical model and to determine the effectiveness of the index based on factor analysis and ideotype design via best linear unbiased prediction (FAI-BLUP) in the selection of erect, early, and high-yielding soybean progenies. To attain these objectives, 204 soybean progenies originating from three populations were examined for various traits of agronomic interest. The inclusion of the population effect in the statistical model was relevant in the genetic evaluation of soybean progenies. To quantify the effectiveness of the FAI-BLUP index, genetic gains were predicted and compared with those obtained by the Smith-Hazel and Additive Genetic indices. The FAI-BLUP index was effective in the selection of progenies with balanced, desirable genetic gains for all traits simultaneously. Therefore, the FAI-BLUP index is an adequate tool for the simultaneous selection of important traits in soybean breeding.

Abstract: Enhancing the rate of genetic gain in plant breeding program is critical to address global food security in the face of climate change and a growing population. Rapid cycling genomic selection offers a powerful breeding strategy to reduce the breeding cycle and obtain rapid genetic gains in plant breeding programs. In this paper, we discuss theoretical and empirical approaches to deploy and optimize rapid cycling genomic selection in crop improvement programs. We highlight major advantages and challenges associated with rapid cycling genomic selection and provide example to overcome these issues. Finally, we discuss the trends and general conclusion on this breeding strategy and provide recommendations for future discussions and continued adoption in plant breeding programs.

Abstract Aims: This study aimed to measure light-intensity physical activity (LPA) patterns in adolescents according to weekdays and school period and investigated associations between LPA patterns and associated factors. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with 388 students of both genders, selected from public schools from Londrina city, Parana state. LPA was measured using accelerometry for seven consecutive days and was analyzed by the time spent in very short (15 to 30 s), short (30 to 60 s), intermediate (1 to 3 min), and long bouts (≥ 3 min). Results: Approximately 22% of the total daily time was spent in LPA. The time in LPA accumulated in short or intermediate bouts was higher than the time accumulated in very short or long bouts (P < 0.05). Gender was associated with short (β= 2.180; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.357 to 4.003) and intermediate bouts (β = 2.822; 95% CI, 0.681 to 4.964), girls presented higher daily time. Age was inversely associated with very short (β = −0.925; 95% CI, −1.676 to −0.175) and intermediate bouts (β = −1.985; 95% CI, −3.579 to −0.390). The total time in LPA and time accumulated in very short, short, and intermediate bouts was higher in the school period when compared to the non-school period (P < 0.05). Conclusion: It could be concluded that the LPA patterns are predominantly composed of time spent in bouts between 30 seconds and three minutes. Gender, age, and school period appear to influence the LPA pattern in adolescents.

Abstract Phytophthora root and stem rot is one of the most aggressive diseases in soybean crop. The use of resistant cultivars is the main strategy to reduce losses caused by the pathogen. This study aims to identify SNP markers associated with genes or QTLs that provide soybean with partial resistance to Phytophthora sojae. A total of 169 soybean cultivars were inoculated with Phytophthora sojae and genotyped with 3,807 SNP markers. Genome-wide association analysis was carried out via multiple linear models, followed by multiple linear regression and linkage disequilibrium analysis. Four QTLs associated with the characteristic were identified: two on chromosome 3 and two on chromosome 15. The regions containing these QTLs contain genes already annotated as providers of resistance to pathogens, in plants. The use of those markers in the selection of resistant plants can increase the efficiency of breeding programs in the development of soybean varieties resistant to P. sojae.

RESUMO: Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o balanço energético e a eficiência energética da cultura milho para silagem implantada no Centro de Desenvolvimento e Transferência de Tecnologia da Universidade Federal de Lavras (CDTT-UFLA). A cultura foi irrigada por pivô central sendo que as etapas de cultivo do milho e entradas de energia foram acompanhadas para 1ª e 2ª safras do ano agrícola de 2014/2015. Os resultados da análise energética mostraram que a cultura teve uma entrada total de energia de 45.643,85MJ ha-1 e 47.303,60MJ ha-1 para a 1ª e 2ª safra, com uma predominância significativa de energia do tipo direta (cerca de 92% da matriz). O óleo diesel foi a fonte de energia direta que mais impactou na matriz, com uma participação de aproximadamente 38%. Já a irrigação teve uma participação de 3,92% e 5,97% na 1ª e 2ª safra respectivamente, representando a maior fonte de energia indireta. Apesar disso, a irrigação e o manejo da cultura permitiram que o sistema alcançasse altos níveis de produtividade, resultando em uma eficiência energética de 25,1 e 28,1 para a 1ª e 2ª safra.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the energy balance and energy efficiency of the silage maize crop in the Center for Research, Development and Technology Transfer of the Universidade Federal de Lavras (CDTT-UFLA). The crop was irrigated by center pivot and the stages of maize cultivation and energy inputs were monitored for the 1st and 2nd crops of the 2014/2015 harvest. Results from the energy analysis showed the crop had a total energy input of 45,643.85 MJ ha-1 and 47,303.60 MJ ha-1 for the 1st and 2nd crops and a significant predominance of direct energy type (about 92% of the matrix). Regarding direct energy inputs, the diesel oil was the most representative, contributing with approximately 38% of the total energy demand. Conversely, the irrigation system contribute with 3.92% e 5.97% in the 1st and 2nd crops, representing the largest indirect energy input. Nevertheless, irrigation and crop management allowed the system achieving high levels of productivity, resulting in an energy efficiency of 25.1 and 28.1 for the first and second crops respectively.

RESUMO Introdução: O consumo mundial de cocaína em suas diversas formas está aumentando; os usuários de cocaína ultrapassaram 17 milhões no mundo. No Brasil, esses dados também são alarmantes. Uma pesquisa realizada em 2010 descobriu que o país tem mais de 900.000 usuários crack. Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos do exercício em variáveis antropométricas e componentes de aptidão física em ex-usuários de crack. Métodos: Estudo randomizado e controlado com 20 homens, divididos em grupo exercício (n = 10) e grupo controle (n = 10), internados em clínica de desintoxicação. Foram avaliados os componentes da aptidão física relacionados à saúde (resistência cardiorrespiratória, flexibilidade, força/resistência muscular e composição corporal) antes e depois do programa de treinamento físico. Resultados: O exercício contribuiu para a manutenção de variáveis antropométricas, enquanto o grupo controle teve aumento da gordura corporal total e da gordura visceral. Com relação à aptidão física, o treinamento de resistência contribuiu para o aumento da maioria das variáveis estudadas, particularmente força e capacidade cardiorrespiratória. Por outro lado, o VO2max e a força dos sujeitos sedentários foram diminuídos (P < 0,05). Conclusão: O exercício mostrou efeitos benéficos nos componentes da aptidão física e na manutenção da composição corporal.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Worldwide cocaine use in all its various forms is increasing; cocaine users exceeded 17 million in the world. In Brazil, this data is also alarming. A survey conducted in 2010 found that the country has more than 900,000 crack-cocaine users. Objective: To evaluate the effects of exercise on anthropometric variables and components of physical fitness in ex-crack cocaine users. Methods: Randomized controlled trial with 20 men, divided into exercise group (n=10) and control group (n=10), admitted to a detoxification center. We assessed the physical fitness components related to health (cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular strength/endurance, and body composition) before and after the physical training program. Results: The exercise contributed to the maintenance of anthropometric variables, while the control group had an increased in total body fat and visceral fat. Regarding physical fitness, resistance training led to the increase of most variables studied, particularly strength and cardiorespiratory capacity. On the other hand, the VO2max and the strength of the sedentary subjects were reduced (P<0.05). Conclusion: The exercise showed beneficial effects on the components of physical fitness and maintenance of body composition.

En Brasil, estos datos también son alarmantes. Una encuesta realizada en 2010 encontró que el país tiene más de 900.000 usuarios de crack. Objetivo: Evaluar los efectos del ejercicio en variables antropométricas y componentes de aptitud física en ex-usuarios de crack. Métodos: Estudio aleatorizado y controlado con 20 hombres, divididos en grupo ejercicio (n = 10) y grupo control (n = 10), internados en una clínica de desintoxicación. Se evaluaron los componentes de la aptitud física relacionados con la salud (resistencia cardiorrespiratoria, flexibilidad, fuerza/resistencia muscular y composición corporal) antes y después del programa de entrenamiento físico. Resultados: El ejercicio contribuyó al mantenimiento de variables antropométricas, mientras que el grupo control tuvo aumento de la grasa corporal total y la grasa visceral. Con respecto a la aptitud física, el entrenamiento de resistencia contribuyó al aumento de la mayoría de las variables estudiadas, sobre todo fuerza y capacidad cardiorrespiratoria. Por otra parte, el VO2máx y la fuerza de los sujetos sedentarios disminuyeron (P < 0,05). Conclusión: El ejercicio mostró efectos beneficiosos en los componentes de la aptitud física y en el mantenimiento de la composición corporal.

In the field of implantology, surgical procedures have been performed with the assistance of computerized tomographies associated to the CAD/CAM technology. Digital images thus obtained, allow professionals to perform virtual surgical planning in specific software. This results in a prototyped guide which enables surgical procedures to be achieved in lesser clinical time, without flaps or sutures, yielding excellent post-operative results. The aim of the present article was to present the sequence of a clinical case in which implants were placed using guided surgery.

En la implantología han sido realizadas cirugías con el auxilio de tomografías computarizadas asociadas a tecnología CAD/CAM. Las imágenes digitales obtenidas permiten que los profesionales realicen una planeación quirúrgica virtual en software específicos, obteniendo como resultado una guía prototipada que permite la realización de una cirugía con un menor tiempo clínico, sin colgajos y suturas, y con un excelente resultado postoperatorio. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar la secuencia de un caso clínico donde los implantes fueron posicionados por cirugía guiada.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar os parâmetros farmacocinéticos da ropivacaína encapsulada em lipossomas após anestesia local em 14 voluntários sadios. Neste estudo randomizado, cruzado e duplo-cego, os voluntários receberam anestesia infiltrativa na maxila de ropivacaína a 0,5% encapsulada em lipossomas e ropivacaína 0,5% com epinefrina a 1:200.000 em duas sessões distintas. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas antes e após (de 15 a 1440 min) a administração das formulações de ropivacaína. A quantificação da concentração plasmática de ropivacaína foi feita por meio de HPLC com detecção por UV. Os parâmetros farmacocinéticos AUC0-24 (área sob a curva de concentração × tempo do tempo 0 até 24 horas) , AUC0-∞ (área sob a curva de concentração x tempo do tempo 0 até o infinito), Cmax (concentração máxima da droga), CL (clearance renal), Tmax (tempo em que ocorre a concentração máxima); t1/2 (meia vida de eliminação) e Vd (volume de distribuição) foram analisados pelo teste de Wilcoxon. Nenhuma diferença (p > 0,05) foi observada entre as duas formulações em cada parâmetro farmacocinético avaliado e as concentrações plasmáticas de ropivacaína, considerando cada período de tempo. Ambas as formulações apresentaram perfil farmacocinético semelhante, indicando que a formulação lipossomal poderia ser uma opção mais segura para o uso deste anestésico local, devido à ausência de vasoconstritor.

The aim of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetic parameters of liposomal ropivacaine after dental anesthesia in 14 healthy volunteers. In this randomized, double-blind and crossover study, the volunteers received maxillary infiltration of liposome-encapsulated 0.5% ropivacaine and, 0.5% ropivacaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine in two different sessions. Blood samples were collected before and after (from 15 to 1440 min) the administration of either ropivacaine formulation. HPLC with UV detection was used to quantify plasma ropivacaine concentrations. The pharmacokinetic parameters AUC0-24 (area under the plasma concentration × time curve from baseline to 24 h), AUC0-∞ (area under the plasma concentration-time curve from baseline to infinity), Cmax (maximum drug concentration), CL (renal clearance), Tmax (maximum drug concentration time), t1/2 (elimination half-life) and Vd (volume of distribution) were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. No differences (p > 0.05) were observed between both formulations for any of the pharmacokinetic parameters evaluated and plasma ropivacaine concentrations, considering each period of time. Both formulations showed similar pharmacokinetic profiles, indicating that the liposomal formulation could be a safer option for use of this local anesthetic, due to the absence of a vasoconstrictor.

OBJETIVO: Descrever o recrutamento de pacientes, instrumentos de avaliação, métodos para o desenvolvimento de estudos colaborativos multicêntricos e os resultados preliminares do Consórcio Brasileiro de Pesquisa em Transtornos do Espectro Obsessivo-Compulsivo, que inclui sete centros universitários. MÉTODO: Este estudo transversal incluiu entrevistas semi-estruturadas (dados sociodemográficos, histórico médico e psiquiátrico, curso da doença e diagnósticos psiquiátricos comórbidos) e instrumentos que avaliam os sintomas do transtorno obsessivo-compulsivo (Escala para Sintomas Obsessivo-Compulsivos de Yale-Brown e Escala Dimensional para Sintomas Obsessivo-Compulsivos de Yale-Brown), sintomas depressivos (Inventário de Depressão de Beck), sintomas ansiosos (Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck), fenômenos sensoriais (Escala de Fenômenos Sensoriais da Universidade de São Paulo), juízo crítico (Escala de Avaliação de Crenças de Brown), tiques (Escala de Gravidade Global de Tiques de Yale) e qualidade de vida (questionário genérico de avaliação de qualidade de vida, Medical Outcome Quality of Life Scale Short-form-36 e Escala de Avaliação Social). O treinamento dos avaliadores consistiu em assistir cinco entrevistas filmadas e entrevistar cinco pacientes junto com um pesquisador mais experiente, antes de entrevistar pacientes sozinhos. A confiabilidade entre todos os líderes de grupo para os instrumentos mais importantes (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, Dimensional Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Universidade de São Paulo Sensory Phenomena Scale ) foi medida após seis entrevistas completas. RESULTADOS: A confiabilidade entre avaliadores foi de 96%. Até março de 2008, 630 pacientes com transtorno obsessivo-compulsivo tinham sido sistematicamente avaliados. A média de idade (±SE) foi de 34,7 (±0,51), 56,3% eram do sexo feminino e 84,6% caucasianos. Os sintomas obsessivo-compulsivos mais prevalentes foram os de simetria e os de contaminação. As comorbidades psiquiátricas mais comuns foram depressão maior, ansiedade generalizada e transtorno de ansiedade social. O transtorno de controle de impulsos mais comum foi escoriação neurótica. CONCLUSÃO: Este consórcio de pesquisa, pioneiro no Brasil, permitiu delinear o perfil sociodemográfico, clínico e terapêutico do paciente com transtorno obsessivo-compulsivo em uma grande amostra clínica de pacientes. O Consórcio Brasileiro de Pesquisa em Transtornos do Espectro Obsessivo-Compulsivo estabeleceu uma importante rede de colaboração de investigação clínica padronizada sobre o transtorno obsessivo-compulsivo e pode abrir o caminho para projetos semelhantes destinados a integrar outros grupos de pesquisa no Brasil e em todo o mundo.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the recruitment of patients, assessment instruments, implementation, methods and preliminary results of The Brazilian Research Consortium on Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders, which includes seven university sites. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included a comprehensive clinical assessment including semi-structured interviews (sociodemographic data, medical and psychiatric history, disease course and comorbid psychiatric diagnoses), and instruments to assess obsessive-compulsive (Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale and Dimensional Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale), depressive (Beck Depression Inventory) and anxious (Beck Anxiety Inventory) symptoms, sensory phenomena (Universidade de São Paulo Sensory Phenomena Scale), insight (Brown Assessment Beliefs Scale), tics (Yale Global Tics Severity Scale) and quality of life (Medical Outcome Quality of Life Scale Short-form-36 and Social Assessment Scale). The raters' training consisted of watching at least five videotaped interviews and interviewing five patients with an expert researcher before interviewing patients alone. The reliability between all leaders for the most important instruments (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, Dimensional Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Universidade de São Paulo Sensory Phenomena Scale) was measured after six complete interviews. RESULTS: Inter-rater reliability was 96%. By March 2008, 630 obsessive-compulsive disorder patients had been systematically evaluated. Mean age (±SE) was 34.7 (±0.51), 56.3% were female, and 84.6% Caucasian. The most prevalent obsessive compulsive symptom dimensions were symmetry and contamination. The most common comorbidities were major depression, generalized anxiety and social anxiety disorder. The most common DSM-IV impulsive control disorder was skin picking. CONCLUSION: The sample was composed mainly by Caucasian individuals, unmarried, with some kind of occupational activity, mean age of 35 years, onset of obsessive-compulsive symptoms at 13 years of age, mild to moderate severity, mostly of symmetry, contamination/cleaning and comorbidity with depressive disorders. The Brazilian Research Consortium on Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders has established an important network for standardized collaborative clinical research in obsessive-compulsive disorder and may pave the way to similar projects aimed at integrating other research groups in Brazil and throughout the world.

O DEET (N, N-dietil-3-metilbenzamida) é hoje o repelente mais efetivo disponível, porém, seu uso pode apresentar importantes efeitos colaterais tópicos e sistêmicos. Alguns compostos botânicos, como a Andiroba (Carapa guianensis), têm demonstrado propriedades repelentes a um baixo custo e baixa toxicidade. Quatro voluntários hígidos submeteram seus antebraços recobertos com óleo de Andiroba a 100%, DEET 50% (controle positivo), óleo de soja refinado, óleo de Andiroba 15% e na ausência de produtos (controles negativos), diretamente a picadas de fêmeas saudáveis de Aedes sp. Foram aferidos os tempos da primeira e terceira picadas. Os resultados mostraram que a mediana da primeira picada nos antebraços sem produto foi 17.5s e a terceira picada, 40.0s. No óleo de soja, as picadas ocorreram em 60.0s e 101.5s. No óleo de Andiroba 100%, em 56.0s e 142.5s. Com Andiroba 15%, em 63.0s e 97.5s. Usando DEET 50% não houve picadas após 3600s na maioria dos experimentos (p < 0.001 Wilcoxon). O óleo de Andiroba 100% comparado ao óleo de soja, antebraço sem produto e óleo de Andiroba 15%, mostrou discreta superioridade (p < 0.001 Wilcoxon). Concluímos que o óleo puro de Andiroba apresenta efeito repelente discreto contra picada de Aedes sp., sendo significativamente inferior ao DEET 50%.

DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) is nowadays the most effective mosquito repellent available, however, its use can present some topical and systemic side effects. Some botanical compositions, as Andiroba (Carapa guianensis), have been proved repellent properties at low cost and toxicity. An experimental study was driven involving four volunteers submitting their forearms covered with Andiroba oil at 100%, DEET 50%, refined soy oil, Andiroba oil 15% and in the absence of products, directly to healthy females of Aedes sp. The times of first and third bites were checked. The results showed that the median of the first bite without any product was 17.5s and the third bite, 40.0s. In the soy oil, the bites happened in 60.0s and 101.5s, in the presence of Andiroba oil 100%, in 56.0s and 142.5s and in Andiroba oil 15%, in 63.0s and 97.5s. The volunteers using DEET 50% had not received bites after 3600s in most of the experiments (p < 0.001 Wilcoxon). Pure Andiroba oil compared to the soy oil, forearm without product and Andiroba oil 15%, showed discreet superiority (p < 0.001 Wilcoxon). Our conclusion is that this study demonstrated that the pure Andiroba oil presents discreet repellent effect against bite of Aedes sp., being significantly inferior to DEET 50%.
