Abstract Abstract: The formononetin biostimulant may be an option for reducing P fertilization once it stimulates mycelial growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and increases plant ability to take up nutrients through the roots, especially phosphorus. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of formononetin associated with phosphorus fertilization in maize. Field experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with a 3 × 4 factorial arrangement (0, 50 or 70, and 140 kg ha-1 P2O5; and formononetin application rates: 0, 25, 50, and 100 g ha-1), with four replications. Formononetin (100 g ha-1) increased the mycorrhizal colonization rate up to 30% in maize in the first four weeks after emergence when no P fertilizer was applied, and to 17% when 50 or 70 kg ha-1 of P2O5 were applied. The application of 50 and 100 g ha-1 of formononetin significantly increased plant height, ear height, and grain yield (22% - 76%) when no P fertilizer was applied. The use of formononetin in the field stimulates mycorrhizal colonization, has a positive effect on maize yield, and reduces the need for P fertilizer application in maize. However, this effect was evident only at low P soil contents.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o nível de resistência de 12 híbridos comerciais de milho à cercosporiose, causada por Cercospora zeae-maydis, e à Mancha Branca, causada por Pantoea ananatis e comparar a eficiência das estimativas da área abaixo da curva de progresso das doenças e da estabilidade fenotípica, na avaliação da resistência a esses patógenos. Foram conduzidos três experimentos, no ano agrícola de 2007/2008, em três locais. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Foram realizadas cinco avaliações da severidade das doenças, em intervalos de sete dias, a partir dos 80 dias da emergência, por meio de uma escala de notas variando de 1 (altamente resistente) a 9 (altamente suscetível). Foram estimadas a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD) e o coeficiente de regressão linear (b1) entre a variável independente época de avaliação (x) e a variável dependente severidade da doença (y) e o coeficiente de determinação (R²). Observou-se que, ambas as metodologias utilizadas mostraram-se eficientes na discriminação do nível de resistência dos híbridos avaliados à Cercosporiose e à Mancha Branca, permitindo a classificação de modo semelhante. Os híbridos mais resistentes às duas doenças foram o AG7088, AG7010 e 2B707 e os mais suscetíveis o 30F44, 30F53 e AG8021. Os híbridos 30K64, DKB177, DKB390 e Impacto apresentaram comportamento variável em função dos locais de avaliação.

With the objective of evaluating the resistance level of commercial corn hybrids and comparing the efficiency of the estimates of the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) and that of the phenotypical stability parameters in the evaluation of resistance maize white spot and gray leaf spot, three experiments were carried out in the agricultural year of 2007/2008 in three environments. Twelve commercial maize hybrids were used, in a randomized block experimental design with three replications. Five evaluations of disease severity (maize white spot and gray leaf spot) based on visual symptoms were performed at seven-day intervals from the 80th day after maize emergence, ranging from 1 (highly resistant) to 9 (highly susceptible). The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was estimated, as were the phenotypical stability parameters, i.e., the linear regression coefficient (b i) between the independent variable evaluation time (x), and the dependent variable, disease severity (y) and the determination coefficient (R²). It was found that in the case of maize white spot and maize gray leaf spot, both methodologies used proved to be effective in the discrimination of the resistance level of the hybrids, enabling them to be ranked in a similar way. The most resistant hybrids to maize white spot and maize gray leaf spot were AG7088, AG 7010 and 2B707, and the most susceptible were 30F44, 30F53 and AG8021. The 30K64, DKB177, DKB390 and Impacto hybrids showed variable levels of resistance with the environment.

Com o objetivo de quantificar o efeito da cercosporiose do milho (Cercospora zeae-maydis) no rendimento de 12 híbridos comerciais de milho e correlacionar a redução na produtividade de grãos com a severidade da doença, foram conduzidos em duas épocas de semeadura, dois experimentos em área experimental da Universidade Federal de Lavras, em Lavras MG, no ano agrícola de 2005/2006. O primeiro experimento foi instalado em 11/11/2005 e o segundo em 23/12/2005. O controle da doença nas parcelas sadias de todos os híbridos foi obtido através de duas aplicações de epoxiconazol + piraclostrobina (37,5 + 99,75 g i.a.ha-1) em intervalo de 15 dias. Nas parcelas sem controle químico da doença, a epidemia iniciou o seu desenvolvimento com o inóculo natural presente na área. Foram realizadas oito avaliações da severidade da doença em intervalos de sete dias, a partir dos 60 dias após a emergência, por meio de escala de notas variando de 1 (resistente) a 9 (suscetível). Estimou-se a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD) e obteve-se a produtividade de grãos. Com os dados estimou-se a porcentagem de danos e as correlações entre a produtividade de grãos e a porcentagem de danos com as estimativas da AACPD. Constatou-se que: o nível de dano varia entre as épocas de semeadura e híbridos avaliados, sendo em média de 13,3%; a cercosporiose é uma doença que reduz a produtividade de grãos de milho, principalmente para a semeadura tardia e o uso de híbridos resistentes dispensa o controle químico da doença.

With the objective of quantifying the effect of gray leaf spot (Cercospora zeae-maydis) on yield of 12 commercial maize hybrids and of correlating grain yield reduction with disease severity, two experiments were performed at two sowing dates (November 11th and December 23rd, 2005) in the experimental area of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), Lavras, MG, Brazil. Disease control in healthy plots of all hybrids was obtained through two applications of epoxiconazol + pyraclostrobin - 37.5 + 99.75 g i.a.ha-1) at a 15-day interval. In uncontrolled plots, epidemic development started from natural inoculum present in the area. Eight evaluations of disease severity based on visual symptoms were performed at seven-day intervals from the 60th day after maize emergence, ranging from 1 (resistant) to 9 (susceptible). The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was estimated and grain yield per plot was also obtained. Results of damage percentage and correlations between grain yield and damage percentage with the estimates of the AUDPC were supported by the data. Damage intensity varied according to sowing season and hybrid, with an average of 13.3%. Maize gray leaf spot reduces the corn grain yield, mainly in the late sowing season, and the use of resistant hybrids excludes the chemical control of the disease.

A podridão do colmo de milho (Zea mays) causada por Fusarium moniliforme tem ocorrência generalizada nas regiões produtoras do Brasil. Visando obter informações sobre o comportamento da doença, foram conduzidos dois experimentos em campo, um inoculando-se artificialmente colmo de plantas aos 30, 55 e 80 dias após a semeadura, e outro testando-se diferentes concentrações de inóculo, 1x10(4), 5x10(5) e 1x10(7) conídios/ml, aplicadas aos 55 dias após a semeadura. Nesses experimentos utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com respectivamente, quatro e cinco repetições, sendo cada parcela constituída de 50 plantas. As inoculações foram feitas no centro do segundo entrenó alongado acima do solo. A avaliação da doença foi realizada aos 120 dias após a semeadura, com base na sintomatologia interna do colmo, utilizando uma escala de notas variando de 1 a 9. Por ocasião da colheita foram avaliados o número de plantas acamadas e a produção de grãos. Procedeu-se também a análise do teor de lignina e tanino da casca e da parte interna do entrenó inoculado nos diferentes tratamentos. Todas as concentrações de inóculo testadas permitiram diferenciar os níveis de resistência dos híbridos, sendo estes decrescentes a partir do Cargill 333 para o Cargill 901, tendo o Dina 766 um comportamento intermediário. Por outro lado, não houve diferenças significativas para as inoculações em diferentes épocas. Os teores de taninos não foram significativamente diferentes entre os híbridos, já o teor de lignina foi significativamente relacionado com o nível de resistência dos três híbridos avaliados.

Stalk rot is of generalized occurrence in the major maize (Zea mays) growing regions of the country. Seeking to evaluate the effects of inoculum concentration and plant age on the reaction of maize to Fusarium moniliforme, the stalks of three maize hybrids were artificially inoculated at the ages of 30, 55 and 80 days after planting using the inoculum concentrations of 1 x 10(4), 5 x10(5) and 1 x10(7) conidia /ml. Completely randomized block designs, respectively, with four and five replications were utilised in these experiments, being each plot constituted of fifty plants. The inoculations were carried out at the center of the second internode extended above soil level. Disease assessement was conducted 120 days post-planting, by using a score scale ranging from 1 to 9, based on the internal necrosis of the stalk. By harvest time, the number of fallen plants and the grain yield were evaluated. The lignin and tanin contents of the rind, and of the internal part of the inoculated internode were also analyzed for different treatments. A significant difference among hybrids in their levels of resistance to F. moniliforme was observed, regardless of the inoculum concentration used and age of inoculation. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in disease levels obtained when stem inoculations with F. moniliforme were performed at different plants ages. Tanin contents were not significantly different among the hybrids, whereas lignin content was significantly related to the level of resistance of the three hybrids evaluated.
