The industrial double rig trawl fisheries are an important extractive activity in the southeastern and southern Brazil where near 300 vessels participate, targeting their catch to the sea-bob shrimp, pink shrimp and demersal fishes, such as flatfishes and monkfish. In order to advance in the fishery management, a general characterization of the trawl fleet operating in the area was done, identifying the patterns of nets used and the hydrodynamic performance of the nets observed by means of dynamic simulation. 194 vessels of Santa Catarina State and 130 vessels from other areas, mainly built in steel and wood, were identified. The largest size, tonnage, and capacity, correspond to those vessels working upon demersal and oceanic fishes. On the other hand, the most abundant vessels were those working upon pink shrimp (230 vessels). Regarding the nets, different patterns were identified according to the catch of target species; the smaller nets were used to catch shrimps (sea-bob and pink shrimp) and the largest were used to catch fishes. Mixed nets were also identified, characterized by similar dimensions of nets to catch fish but with mesh sizes of shrimp nets. From the simulations, different performance functions were adjusted according to each founded pattern; these functions will serve to calculate net's spread, their shape relationship, and the hydrodynamic drag forces.

Las pesquerías industriales de arrastre con tangones son una importante actividad extractiva en el sudeste y sur de Brasil donde participan cerca de 300 embarcaciones dirigiendo su captura a camarón siete barbas, camarón rosa, y peces demersales como peces planos y pejesapo. Para avanzar en el manejo pesquero, se realizó una caracterización general de la flota de arrastre que opera en el área, identificando los patrones de las redes usadas y el desempeño hidrodinámico de las redes observado mediante simulación dinámica. Se analizaron 194 embarcaciones del Estado de Santa Catarina y 130 embarcaciones de otras áreas, construidas principalmente de acero y madera. Las embarcaciones de mayor tamaño, tonelaje y capacidad correspondieron a aquellas que trabajan sobre peces demersales y peces oceánicos. La mayor cantidad de embarcaciones opera sobre camarón rosa (230 embarcaciones). Respecto a las redes, se identificaron diferentes patrones de acuerdo a las especies objetivo de captura; las redes más pequeñas fueron usadas para la captura de camarones (camarón siete barbas y camarón rosa) y las de mayor tamaño para la captura de peces. También se identificaron redes mixtas, caracterizadas por dimensiones similares a las redes para capturar peces pero con tamaño de malla de redes camaroneras. A partir de las simulaciones se ajustaron diferentes funciones de desempeño conforme a los patrones particulares de cada tipo de red. Estas funciones servirán para calcular la abertura de las redes, su relación de forma y las fuerzas hidrodinámicas de arrastre.

This study aimed at identifying and characterizing the industrial bottom gillnet fisheries existing in southeastern and southern Brazil, and discussing their implication to the current regional management regime. More than 7,000 landings were monitored in Santa Catarina State harbors (Southern Brazil), between 2001 and 2008. Five distinct fisheries have been identified: foreign vessels captured the monkfish (Lophius gastrophysus) in slope grounds from 2001 to 2002. National fleets have targeted whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), and Argentine croaker (Umbrina canosai) on the continental shelf, and monkfish and the gulf hake (Urophysis mystacea) on the slope. Besides targets and fishing grounds, mesh sizes of the nets were also distinct among the fisheries. Within the four national fisheries only the monkfish have specific legislation, while a general norm orders the others, irrespective of the particularities of the stocks and fleets involved.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar y caracterizar la pesca industrial con redes de enmalle de fondo en la región sureste y sur de Brasil, y discutir sus implicancias en el actual sistema de manejo pesquero. Entre los años 2001 y 2008 más de 7.000 desembarques fueron monitoreados en los puertos del Estado de Santa Catarina (Sur de Brasil). Se identificaron cinco pesquerías distintas: embarcaciones extranjeras direccionadas a la captura del rape (Lophius gastrophysus) en el talud en 2001 y 2002, y embarcaciones nacionales, cuyas especies objetivo fueron corvina (Micropogonias furnieri) y pargo blanco (Umbrina canosai) en la plataforma continental, y rape y brótola (Urophysis mystacea) en el talud. Además de las especies objetivos y áreas de pesca, el tamaño de malla de la red también fue diferente entre las pesquerías. Dentro de las cuatro pesquerías nacionales, solamente la pesca del rape presenta una legislación específica, mientras que para las demás, existe una legislación general de manejo pesquero, que no considera las particularidades de las poblaciones y de las flotas implicadas.

This cost-benefit analysis of three industrial bottom gillnet fisheries that operated in SE/S Brazil during 2009, had a double purpose: to determine the economic and financial performance of the average gillnet vessel in the coastal whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), the gulf hake (Urophycis mystacea) and monkfish (Lophius gastrophysus) fisheries and to determine the expected effects of applying fishing gear regulation (MPA/MMA N°12/2012) on the performance of the whitemouth croaker fishing fleet. Crucial to this cost-benefit analysis was to collect data through interviews to vessel owners on these fishing fleets cost structures and their fishing costs levels. Three economic and financial performance indicators were used to assess the condition of these fishing fleets: Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Profitability Index (PI). Results showed different costs levels between fishing fleets but, similar relative importance of cost components across fleets: with running costs being the highest, followed by vessel and labor costs in order of importance, except in the gulf hake fishing fleet. Results from the economic and financial performance assessment showed that these three fishing fleets were in a fragile economic and financial condition, all having IRRs lower that 20% and PIs of 1.7 or lower, too low for a high risk activity like fisheries. This problem been more acute in the whitemouth croaker fishing fleet with the lowest IRR (12.11%) and PI (1.2). Potential effects of applying the fishing regulation showed marginal improvements in the fragile condition of the whitemouth croaker fishing fleet.

El análisis de costo-beneficio de las tres pesquerías industriales de enmalle de fondo que operaron en el SE/S Brasil durante 2009 tuvo un doble propósito: determinar el desempeño económico y financiero de una embarcación promedio que opera con enmalle en las pesquerías de corvina (Micropogonias furnieri), brótula (Urophycis mystacea) y rape (Lophius gastrophysus) y establecer los efectos que se pueden esperar al aplicar la regulación al arte de pesca (MPA/MMA N°12/2012) en el desempeño de la flota que pesca la corvina. Crucial para este análisis de costo-beneficio fue la recolección de información mediante entrevistas a dueños de embarcaciones sobre las estructuras y los niveles de costos en la pesca. Tres indicadores de desempeño económico y financiero fueron utilizados para evaluar la condición en que se encuentran estas flotas pesqueras: Valor Presente Neto (VPN), Tasa Interna de Retorno (TIR) e Índice de Rentabilidad (IR). Los resultados mostraron diferentes niveles de costos entre las flotas pesqueras. Sin embargo, presentan similar importancia relativa los componentes de costos entre flotas: los costos corrientes son los mayores, seguidos en orden de importancia por los costos de operación de la embarcación y del trabajo, excepto en la flota pesquera de brótula. Los resultados de la evaluación del desempeño económico y financiero mostraron que estas tres flotas estaban en condición económica y financiera frágil, teniendo TIRs menores de 20% e IRs de 1,7 o menores, lo que es muy bajo para actividades de alto riesgo como es la pesca. Este problema resultó más agudo en la flota pesquera de corvina, que mostraron los menores valores de TIR (12,11%) e IR (1,2). Los efectos potenciales de aplicar la regulación al arte de pesca mostraron mejoras marginales en la frágil condición de la flota pesquera de corvina.

The use of the turtle excluder device (TED) has been mandatory in Brazil since 1994. In spite of the importance of sea turtle bycatch reduction, TED effectiveness to maintain target species capture had never been evaluated in shrimp fisheries off southern Brazil. For this purpose, a test was carried out in November 2013 with the TED installed with two different configurations, top or bottom opening under the supervision of a technician of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Absolute catch and fishery yields were simultaneously monitored in 10 fishing hauls of a double-rig trawler by an onboard observer in one net equipped with a TED and the other without a TED. Although a Bayesian hypothesis test demonstrated no significant differences through the simultaneous comparison of absolute capture considering the use and non-use of the TED, the credibility interval of posterior beta distributions intercepted almost its minimum limit which weakens the hypothesis of equality. In terms of orientation, the model mounted with the top opening showed no differences in absolute catches of the target species in respect to control.

El uso del dispositivo excluidor de tortuga (TED) es obligatorio en Brasil desde 1994. A pesar de la importancia de la reducción de la captura incidental de tortugas marinas, la eficacia del TED para mantener la captura de las especies objetivo nunca había sido evaluado en la pesquería de camarón frente a la costa sur de Brasil. Por este motivo, se realizó una prueba en noviembre de 2013, con un diseño de TED usando dos vías de evacuación (arriba-abajo), bajo la supervisión de un técnico de la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Tanto la captura absoluta como los rendimientos de pesca fueron simultáneamente monitoreados en 10 lances de pesca a bordo de un barco arrastrero por un observador, usando una red equipada con TED y el otro sin TED. Aunque una prueba de hipótesis bayesiana demostró que no existen diferencias significativas mediante la comparación simultánea considerando la captura absoluta del uso y no uso del TED, el intervalo de credibilidad de las distribuciones beta posteriores interceptaron cerca de su límite mínimo lo cual debilita la hipótesis de igualdad. En términos de orientación, el modelo montado con la abertura hacia arriba no mostró diferencias en las capturas absolutas de las especies objetivo respecto al control.

The development of a deep-sea fishery for aristeid shrimps off Brazil is reviewed from its early days in 2002. Descriptive data were collected by observers on board 75 directed fishing trips conducted in the study period, with a total of over 15,000 monitored trawls. An incipient fishing phase took place between No-vember 2000 and October 2002, when aristeid shrimps were occasionally reported in the bycatch of operations mostly targeting the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi). After that, a directed fishery was established for these resources. All nine vessels involved in this fishery (one national and eight chartered) concentrated on 11 limited grounds between 700 and 800 m deep and 18°S and 34°S. The main species caught between November 2002 and May 2007 was the "carabinero" Aristaeopsis edwardsiana (456,710 kg), followed by the "moruno" Aristaeomorpha foliácea (121,497 kg), and then the "alistado" Aristeus antillensis (27,919 kg). The trawlers operate in conjunction, such that the total area of each fishing ground was swept at least twice. This harvest pattern substantially reduced "carabinero" catch rates from 14 kg hour-1 in the first sampled trimester to 4 kg hour-1 in the last. Despite the inferred biomass reduction of this species, the fishery has continued without a formal management plan.

Se revisa el desarrollo de una pesquería en aguas profundas dirigida a gambas aristeideas en Brasil. Desde su inicio, en 2002, los datos descriptivos fueron obtenidos por observadores a bordo de 75 viajes de pesca realizadas en ese período que resultaron en más de 15.000 arrastres monitoreados. Una fase incipiente de la pesquería se estableció entre noviembre de 2000 y octubre de 2002, cuando gambas aristeideas fueron registradas en la captura accidental de operaciones de pesca dirigidas principalmente a la merluza-argentina (Merluccius hubbsi). A ésta sobrevino una fase dirigida en que participaron nueve arrastreros (uno nacional y ocho arrendados). Estos buques concentraron sus operaciones en 11 fondos de pesca angostos entre 700 y 800 m de profundidad y los paralelos 18°S y 34°S. Las principales especies capturadas entre noviembre de 2002 y mayo de 2007 fueron el "carabinero" Aristaeopsis edwardsiana (456,710 kg), seguido del "moruno" Aristaeomorpha foliácea (121,497 kg), y el "alistado" Aristeus antillensis (27,919 kg). Los arrastreros operaran de forma agregada y esto hace que el area total de cada zona de pesca haya sido arrastrada al menos dos veces. Este patrón de explotación ha producido reducciones substanciales en las tasas de captura del "carabinero" que varió de 14 kg hora-1 en el primer trimestre de monitoreo a 4 kg hora-1 en el último. A pesar de la aparente reducción de biomasa de esta especie, la pesquería ha continuado sin un plan formal de manejo.

The seabob shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) represents an important fishing resource for artisanal fishermen in coastal areas of southern Brazil. Stock assessments of this species ha ve generally relied on biomass dynamics models as applied to CPUE time-series, which (a) are only available for a small offshore fraction of the exploited population and (b) does not comprise patterns of the shallowest artisanal fishing grounds. This work explores the use of extensive catch and effort data derived from a small-scale trawl fishery to obtain swept-area estimates of abundance and removal rates in a limited coastal area of southern Brazil (Tijucas Bay, Santa Catarina State, 27°15'S-48°33'W). Data were obtained from 7,198 fishing trips monitored at the fishing communities between June 2004 and August 2005. Because three parameters of the swept-area equation (i.e. trawl velocity, catch efficiency and wing spread) were unknown, they were defined through a stochastic procedure and calibrated by estimates produced by a Leslie depletion model applied to concurrent catches obtained in one fishing ground. A 21.7% removal rate was estimated for the period June 2004-January 2005; this increased to nearly 34% between February and July 2005. This removal scenario predicted that a five-month fishery would suffice to remo ve 90% of the biomass available in the Tijucas Bay, nearing the 87% CPUE reduction observed in the same period. Whereas abundance and harvest rate estimates were likely affected by inadequate knowledge of the swept-area equation parameters, the similarity of these estimates with relative abundance indexes supports the convenience of the proposed method and justifies future efforts to improve its accuracy.

El camarón (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) representa un importante recurso para pescadores artesanales en areas costeras del sur de Brasil. Evaluaciones de stock de esta especie generalmente resultan de modelos de dinámica de biomasa aplicados a series temporales de CPUE los cuales (a) están disponibles solamente para una pequeña fracción explotada en areas más alejadas de la costa y (b) que no contienen los patrones de los fondos someros de la pesca artesanal. Este trabajo analiza la utilidad de numerosos datos de captura y esfuerzo obtenidos en una pesquería de arrastre de pequeña escala para el estimado de abundancia y tasas de remoción, por el método de area de barrido, en un area costera reducida del sur de Brasil (bahía de Tijucas, Estado de Santa Catarina, 27°15'S-48°33'W). Los datos fueron obtenidos de 7.198 viajes de pesca monitoreados en comunidades pesqueras entre junio de 2004 y agosto de 2005. Debido al desconocimiento de tres parámetros de la ecuación del area de barrido (i.e. velocidad del arrastre, eficiencia y apertura horizontal de las redes), éstos fueron definidos por un procedimiento estocástico y calibrados por los estimados producidos por un modelo de reducción de stock de Leslie aplicado a capturas simultáneas obtenidas en una misma area de pesca. Se estimóuna tasa de remoción de 21,7% para el periodo junio 2004-enero 2005, que aumentó casi al 34% entre febrero y julio de 2005. Estos estimados permitieron pronosticar que cinco meses de pesquería serían suficientes para remover el 90% de la biomasa disponible en la bahía de Tijucas, lo que se aproxima al 87% de reducción de la CPUE observada durante el mismo período. Es probable que los estimados de abundancia y tasas de remoción hayan sido afectados por el conocimiento insuficiente de los referidos parámetros de la ecuación del area de barrido, la similitud con índices relativos de abundancia apoyan la utilidad del método planteado y justifica esfuerzos futuros que permitan mejorar su precisión.

Seguindo a recente expansão da pesca brasileira para o talude continental, uma nova pescaria de camarões da família Aristeidae tem se desenvolvido desde meados de 2002. O camarão "carabineiro", Aristaeopsis edwardsiana, é o principal componente das capturas, alcançando 88,4 % da produção total de camarões. Os camarões "moruno", Aristaeomorpha foliacea e "alistado", Aristeus antillensis, compõem frações menores das descargas (9,8 % e 1,8 % respectivamente). Duas áreas principais de pesca foram descobertas na região Sudeste do Brasil (19º - 25ºS) e uma no limite setentrional da ZEE do país (4º - 5ºN). As capturas estiveram concentradas entre as isóbatas de 700 e 750 m. As taxas médias de captura de A. edwardsiana flutuaram entre 6,5 e 9,7 kg.h-1. As outras espécies foram capturadas em taxas consideravelmente menores (0,1 - 0,6 kg.h-1 e 0,1 - 1,3 kg.h-1, respectivamente). Sugere-se uma sazonalidade nas capturas de A. edwardsiana, com valores máximos entre julho e dezembro. Apesar do direcionamento aos camarões, capturas incidentais do caranguejo-real (Chaceon ramosae) alcançaram uma média de 22 % das descargas totais.

Following the recent expansion of the Brazilian fishery to slope fishing grounds, a new directed trawl fishery for aristeid shrimps emerged since mid 2002. Aristaeopsis edwardsiana has been the main component of the catches attaining 88.4% of total shrimp production. Aristaeomorpha foliacea and Aristeus antillensis have composed significantly smaller fractions of the landings (9.8 % and 1.8 % respectively). Two main grounds were located in the southeastern region (ca. 19º - 25ºS) and one in the northern border of the Brazilian EEZ (ca. 4º30' - 5ºN). Catches have been extremely concentrated between the 700 and 750 m isobaths. Mean catch rates of A. edwardsiana oscillated between 6.5 and 9.7 kg.h-1. The other species have been caught at considerably lower rates (0.1 - 0.6 kg.h-1 and 0.1 - 1.3 kg.h-1, respectively). A seasonal pattern in A. edwardsiana catches is suggested, with maximum values obtained between July and December. While largely directed to the shrimps, incidental catches of the royal crab (Chaceon ramosae) attained, on average, 22 % of the total landings.
