Abstract The brewing of Chinese Baijiu is a microbial community fermentation system, in which there is a close and complex relationship between microorganisms and flavor quality, but the specific deep-seated mechanism still needs to be explored and interpreted continuously so far. In this review, Maotai flavor Baijiu was briefly introduced, and the microorganisms mainly affected by flavor substances, the main components of flavor substances, the factors affecting flavor formation and the application ways of functional microorganisms in Maotai flavor Baijiu were summarized. It provides a deeper understanding for the research of others flavor Baijiu.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The competitive level of tennis has increased in recent years, challenging researchers to promote a higher level of endurance and performance of its practitioners. Objective: Analyze the impacts of CrossFit training on the performance of tennis athletes. Methods: This work conducted a four-week experiment with 50 professional tennis players, introducing a protocol based on CrossFit training to the experimental group. Levels of sports endurance and competition performance were statistically analyzed before and after the experiment. It was also analyzed whether CrossFit training could effectively improve tennis players’ sports endurance and performance level. Results: After the intervention, the time required for the tennis players to take off and hit the ball 20 times in three steps after the recoil was reduced from 71.12 seconds before the experiment to 60.04 seconds in the experimental group. The forehand strike’s linear and diagonal speeds increased by 11.00% and 6.57%, respectively. And the number of effective and accurate balls in the recoil increased by 5.87% and 5.58%. Conclusion: CrossFit training can improve tennis players’ sporting endurance, playing a positive role in improving the players’ level. RESUMEN Introducción: El nivel competitivo del tenis ha aumentado en los últimos años, desafiando a los investigadores en la promoción de un mayor nivel de resistencia y rendimiento de sus practicantes. Objetivo: Analizar los impactos del entrenamiento de Crossfit en el rendimiento de atletas de tenis. Métodos: Este trabajo realizó un experimento de cuatro semanas con 50 tenistas profesionales, introduciendo en el grupo experimental un protocolo basado en el entrenamiento CrossFit. Se analizaron estadísticamente los niveles de resistencia deportiva y rendimiento en competición antes y después del experimento, también se analizó si el entrenamiento de Crossfit podía mejorar eficazmente la resistencia deportiva y el nivel de rendimiento de los tenistas. Resultados: Después de la intervención, el tiempo requerido por los tenistas para despegar y golpear la pelota durante 20 veces en tres pasos después del retroceso se redujo de 71,12 segundos antes del experimento a 60,04 segundos en el grupo experimental. La velocidad lineal y la velocidad diagonal del golpe de derecha también aumentaron un 11,00% y un 6,57%, respectivamente. Siendo que el número de pelotas efectivas y de pelotas precisas en el retiro aumentaron en 5,87% y 5,58%. Conclusión: El entrenamiento de Crossfit puede mejorar la resistencia deportiva de los tenistas, desempeñando un papel positivo en la mejora del nivel de los jugadores. Objetivo: Analisar os impactos do treinamento de CrossFit sobre o desempenho dos atletas de tênis. Métodos: Este trabalho conduziu uma experiência de quatro semanas com 50 tenistas profissionais, introduzindo um protocolo baseado no treinamento de CrossFit ao grupo experimental. Níveis de resistência esportiva e o desempenho na competição foram analisados estatisticamente antes e depois do experimento, também foi analisado se o treinamento CrossFit poderia efetivamente melhorar a resistência esportiva e o nível de desempenho dos tenistas. Resultados: Após a intervenção, o tempo necessários para os tenistas decolarem e baterem na bola por 20 vezes em três etapas após o recuo foi reduzido de 71,12 segundos antes do experimento para 60,04 segundos, no grupo experimental. A velocidade linear e a velocidade diagonal da batida dianteira também aumentaram em 11,00% e 6,57%, respectivamente. Sendo que o número de bolas efetivas e de bolas precisas no recuo aumentaram em 5,87% e 5,58%. Conclusão: O treinamento de CrossFit pode melhorar a resistência esportiva dos tenistas, desempenhando um papel positivo na melhora do nível dos jogadores. Abstract Under the influence of the COVID-19, people's awareness of physical health and immunity has increased significantly. Chitooligosaccharide is an oligomer of β-(1, 4)-linked D -glucosamine, furthermore, is one of the most widely studied immunomodulators. Chitooligosaccharide can be prepared from the chitin or chitosan polymers through enzymatically, chemically or physically processes. Chitooligosaccharide and its derivatives have been proven to have a wide range of biological activities including intestinal flora regulation, immunostimulant, anti-tumor, anti-obesity and anti-oxidation effects. This review summarizes the latest research of the preparation methods, biological activities in immunity and safety profiles of Chitooligosaccharide and its derivatives. We recapped the effect mechanisms of Chitooligosaccharide basing on overall immunity. Comparing the effects of Chitooligosaccharide with different molecular weights and degree of aggregation, a reference range for usage has been provided. This may provide a support for the application of Chitooligosaccharide in immune supplements and food. In addition, future research directions are also discussed.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effects of eugenol (Eu) at different concentrations (0, 10, 50, 100, 200, and 300 μM/g protein) on the gel properties and chemical structure changes of porcine myofibrillar protein (MP). The results showed that Eu inhibited the increase of surface hydrophobicity and carbonyl content but did not prevent the oxidation-induced loss of thiol groups. Moreover, Eu intensified the loss of the α-helical conformation as well as the tertiary structure of MP under oxidative stress. The physicochemical changes at 10 and 50 μM/g Eu resulted in a significant enhancement of the gelling ability of MP and enhanced the positive role of oxidation in building elastic gel networks. Conversely, Eu at the concentrations of 100, 200, and 300 μM/g was not conducive to gelling ability, especially at 300 μM/g, and these concentrations were associated with Eu-induced protein conformational changes.

Abstract Objectives The differentiation between Vestibular Migraine (VM) and Meniere's Disease (MD) is difficult because of overlapping symptoms. The study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics and vestibular function test results between VM and MD patients. Methods Seventy-one patients with definite VM and 31 patients with definite unilateral MD were included. All patients received Caloric Test (CT), Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) and Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (VEMP) test within 7 days after visiting the hospital. Results of these tests were compared between groups. Results Most VM patients (64.0%) experienced spontaneous internal vertigo, while most MD patients (66.7%) experienced spontaneous external vertigo. MD patients had more severe vestibular symptoms and autonomic responses compared to VM patients during attacks (p= 0.03, p= 0.00, respectively). The nystagmus intensity of CT-induced was greater in VM patients than in MD patients (p= 0.003). More VM patients had CT intolerance and Central Positional Nystagmus (CPN) compared to MD patients (p= 0.002, p = 0.006, respectively). More MD patients had CT(+) and vHIT saccades wave compared to VM patients (p< 0.001, p= 0.002, respectively). The non-elicitation rate of cervical VEMP was higher, and the ocular VEMP amplitudes were lower in MD patients than in VM patients (p = 0.002, p= 0.018). Conclusions Vestibular symptoms during attacks combined with the results of vestibular function tests may be used to differentiate between VM and MD. The diverse nature of vestibular symptoms (especially internal vertigo), history of motion sickness and CT intolerance may provide clues to the diagnosis of VM, whereas spontaneous external vertigo, CT(+) with vHIT(-), and the presence of saccades may provide clues to the diagnosis of MD. Abstract Objective To compare the clinical features, risk factors, distribution of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) subtypes, and effectiveness of canalith repositioning between geriatric and non-geriatric patients with BPPV. Methods A total of 400 patients with BPPV were enrolled. Canalith repositioning was performed according to the semicircular canals involved. Patients were divided by age into a geriatric group (≥60 years) and a non-geriatric group (20-59 years). Clinical characteristics, potential age-related risk factors, distribution of subtypes, and effectiveness of canalith repositioning were compared between the groups. Results Female sex was significantly more common in all age groups, with a peak female-to-male ratio of 5.1:1 in the group aged 50-59 years. There was a higher proportion of men in the geriatric group. A history of disease associated with atherosclerosis was significantly more common in the geriatric group (p< 0.05). Migraine was significantly more common in the non-geriatric group (p= 0.018), as was posterior canal BPPV. The horizontal canal BPPV (especially horizontal canal BPPV-cupulolithiasis), and multicanal BPPV subtypes were more common in the geriatric group, whereas anterior canal BPPV was more common in the non-geriatric group. Two canalith repositioning sessions were effective in 58.0% of the geriatric cases and in 72.6% of the non-geriatric cases (p= 0.002). There was a tendency for the effectiveness of canalith repositioning to decrease with increasing age. Conclusion BPPV was more common in women. However, the proportion of men with BPPV increased with age. Elderly patients often had a history of diseases associated with atherosclerosis (i.e., hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia). The horizontal canal BPPV (particularly horizontal canal BPPV-cupulolithiasis) and multicanal BPPV subtypes were more common and the anterior canal BPPV subtype was less common in elderly patients. The effectiveness of canalith repositioning may decrease with age. Therefore, older patients should receive more comprehensive medical treatment. Level of evidence: 4.

Regular exercise reduces the risk of malignancy and decreases the recurrence of cancer. However, the mechanisms behind this protection remain to be elucidated. Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes of the innate immune system, which play essential roles in immune defense and effectively prevent cancer metastasis. Physical exercise can increase the activity of NK cells. Interleukin-15 (IL-15) is the best-studied cytokine activator of NK cells, and it was shown to have many positive functional effects on NK cells to improve antitumor responses. The aim of this study was to clarify the possible important mechanisms behind endurance exercise-induced changes in NK cell function, which may be highly correlated with IL-15. An animal model was used to study IL-15 expression level, tumor volume, cancer cell apoptosis, and NK cell infiltration after treadmill exercise. Although IL-15 was highly expressed in skeletal muscle, treadmill exercise further elevated IL-15 levels in plasma and muscle (P<0.05). In addition, tumor weight and volume of tumor-bearing mice were decreased (P<0.05), and liver tumor cell apoptosis was increased after 12 weeks of treadmill exercise (P<0.05). NK cell infiltration was upregulated in tumors from treadmill exercise mice, and the level of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and IL-15 were higher than in sedentary mice (P<0.05). The study indicated that regular endurance training can reduce cancer risk, which was related to increased IL-15 expression, activation of the immune killing effect of NK cells, and promotion of tumor cell apoptosis, which can ultimately control tumor growth.

Abstract Allium mongolicum Regel is a desert plant that shows great resistance to wind erosion, drought, and low temperatures and is widely distributed in the desert lands of China. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying its drought resistance is essential for uncovering drought resistance genes and improving its beneficial traits. Here, a de novo RNA-Seq assembly analysis was conducted using the roots of 1-month-old seedlings under drought stress. Using pairwise comparisons of untreated plants (CK), 48-hour drought plants (G48h), and 96-hour drought plants (G96h), in total, 2,211 differentially expressed unigenes (DEGs) were obtained. Furthermore, using functional annotation, these DEGs were mainly involved in the plasma membrane, photosynthesis, and secondary carbohydrate metabolism. Moreover, genes involved in the ABA-mediated signaling pathway and secondary metabolism were upregulated in the roots. These results suggest that desert plants may use signaling and secondary metabolic pathways as adaptive responses to drought stress. Collectively, this work could help elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the ability of A. mongolicum Regel to respond to drought stress and aid in the selection of novel drought tolerance genes.

Resumen Allium mongolicum Regel es un tipo de planta desértica que muestra una gran resistencia a la erosión eólica, la sequía y las bajas temperaturas; se distribuye ampliamente en las tierras desérticas de China. Comprender los mecanismos moleculares subyacentes a la resistencia a la sequía de A. mongolicum Regel es esencial para descubrir genes resistentes a la sequía y mejorar este rasgo beneficioso en otras plantas. Aquí, el análisis de ensamblaje de ARN-Seq de novo se llevó a cabo utilizando las raíces de plántulas de 1 mes de edad en respuesta al estrés por sequía. Utilizando comparaciones por pares de plantas no tratadas (CK), plantas de 48 horas (G48h) y plantas de 96 horas (G96h), se obtuvieron un total de 2.211 unigenes (DEGs) expresados diferencialmente. Mientras tanto, usando la anotación funcional, estos DEGs fueron implicados principalmente en la membrana de plasma, la fotosíntesis, y el metabolismo de carbohidrato secundario. Por otra parte, los genes implicados en el camino ABA-mediado de la señalización y en metabolismo secundario para arriba fueron regulados para arriba en raíces. Estos resultados sugieren que las plantas del desierto pueden utilizar la señalización y las vías metabólicas secundarias como respuestas adaptativas al estrés por sequía. Colectivamente, este trabajo ayudará a comprender los mecanismos moleculares subyacentes a la capacidad de A. mongolicum Regel para responder al estrés por sequía y ayudar en la selección de nuevos genes de tolerancia a la sequía.

Abstract To study the long-term clinical efficacy of protrusion of lumbar intervertebral disc with percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD). A statistics was conducted on 108 patients who had been treated with percutaneous laser disc decompression, the intervertebral height of related lesion spaces of patients in different time points after treatment and the intervertebral height ratio was calculated respectively; moreover, a statistics was conducted on VAS evaluation of patients in different time points, and the long-term efficacy after treatment with percutaneous laser disc decompression was evaluated with statistical method. The patients with follow-up period after operation respectively up to 5, 8 and 10 years and those in 3 years after operation were analyzed statistically in intervertebral height ratio and VAS scoring, and the difference was without significant statistical significance. Single-factor was analyzed to the factors likely to influence the effect of operation to get the authenticity of influence of age, disease duration and disease stage on the postoperative efficacy. Percutaneous laser disc decompression was featured by safety, efficacy and fewer complications in treatment of protrusion of lumbar intervertebral disc, and also it had no obvious influence on the spinal stability, and long-term postoperative efficacy was stable.

Abstract To determine whether ozone can regulate fruit ripening and delay fruit aging, Kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa 'Guichang') was fumigated with different ozone concentrations (100 μL/L, 200 μL/L, 300 μL/L) for 3 h, stored at 1 °C and 85 ± 5% RH for three months, and then matured at 20 °C and 85% RH for 12 days. Compared with controls, the optimal concentration of ozone delayed kiwifruit ripening during cold storage by delaying the respiratory burst that precedes fruit decay. Consequently, fruit firmness, nutrient content, and enzyme activity remained stable; the expression of AdACS1 and AdACO1 as well as the activity of ACC synthetase (ACS) and ACC oxidase (ACO) was downregulated, whereby ACC and MACC were accumulated. In addition, ozone-treated fruit showed significantly reduced infection with grey mold. The effect of ozone on kiwifruit at 200 μL/L was the best suited for delaying fruit senescence, maintaining high quality during storage and fruit ripening compared with other fruits. Overall, our study indicated that ozone may play a major residual role in the physiological process of fruit ripening; furthermore, ozone can affect ethylene biosynthesis and fruit changes associated with endogenous ethylene production.

Abstract To explore the critical care treatment and clinical outcome of patients with severe aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SaSAH), and to provide clinical evidence for the treatment of patients with SaSAH. 160 patients with SaSAH of Hunt and Hess (H&H) grade III or above in the neurosurgical critical care unit at ourospital between June 2016 and June 2018 were enrolled in this study. Patients were treated with brain protective bundle based on step-wised protocol under multimodal monitoring and followed up for 3 months. The incidence of various clinical complications and the clinical prognosis after discharge were statistically analyzed. Furthermore, it carried on the correlation analysis to the risk factors and the prognosis. In 160 patients with SaSAH, 127 patients had responsible aneurysms located in the anterior circulation, and the other 33 patients were located in the posterior circulation. 70 patients (43.8%) underwent transcranial clipping, 81 patients (50.6%) underwent endovascular embolization and 9 patients (5.6%) did not intervene. Patients with IV and V grades of Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) were considered good recovery, and those with grade I, II and III were poor prognosis. The 30-day good prognosis rate was 41.3% (66/160) and the poor prognosis rate was 58.7% (94/160). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the Hunt & Hess classification correlated well with prognosis (OR: 4.367,95% CI, 2.254-8.460, P < 0.001). The clinical prognosis of patients with SaSAH is still poor. In particular, under the critical care of neurosurgery, the application of brain protective bundle based on step-wised protocol under multimodal monitoring might improve the clinical prognosis of patients with SaSAH.

Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents the most common type of sustained cardiac arrhythmia in humans and confers a significantly increased risk for thromboembolic stroke, congestive heart failure and premature death. Aggregating evidence emphasizes the predominant genetic defects underpinning AF and an increasing number of deleterious variations in more than 50 genes have been involved in the pathogenesis of AF. Nevertheless, the genetic basis underlying AF remains incompletely understood. In the current research, by whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing analysis in a family with autosomal-dominant AF and congenital patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a novel heterozygous variation in the PRRX1 gene encoding a homeobox transcription factor critical for cardiovascular development, NM_022716.4:c.373G>T;p.(Glu125*), was identified to be in co-segregation with AF and PDA in the whole family. The truncating variation was not detected in 306 unrelated healthy individuals employed as controls. Quantitative biological measurements with a reporter gene analysis system revealed that the Glu125*-mutant PRRX1 protein failed to transactivate its downstream target genes SHOX2 and ISL1, two genes that have been causally linked to AF. Conclusively, the present study firstly links PRRX1 loss-of-function variation to AF and PDA, suggesting that AF and PDA share a common abnormal developmental basis in a proportion of cases.

Abstract We investigated the effects of melatonin (MT) treatment on the physiological quality and cell wall metabolism of kiwifruit during a 12-day shelf life period (20 ± 1 °C, 90 ± 5% RH), after 90 days of cold storage (0 ± 0.5 °C, 90 ± 5% RH). Our results showed that MT treatment delayed kiwifruit softening, as evidence by the enhanced endurance of a healthy appearance, quality, color difference L* value, and firmness of the fruit flesh. MT treatment reduced fruit decay rate, respiration rate, and malondialdehyde content; furthermore, MT-treated kiwifruit maintained high levels of total soluble solids, titratable acid, and ascorbic acid. Additionally, MT inhibited the decrease in fruit pectin, cellulose, and hemicellulose contents; it delayed the increase in water-soluble pectin content and kept pectin methyl esterase, polygalacturonase, cellulase, and β-galactosidase activities low. These results indicated that melatonin may have reduced the speed of softening of kiwifruit and preserved fruit quality by inhibiting enzymatic degradation of the cell wall, and by delaying pro-pectin, cellulose, and hemicellulose degradation, as well as the increase of water-soluble pectin content. These findings indicate that MT treatment may be an effective measure to delay kiwifruit postharvest cell-wall metabolism and preserve fruit quality.

Abstract The effects of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment and controlled-atmosphere (CA) storage and their combination on quality and antioxidant capacity of postharvest blueberries were evaluated here. To investigate the most appropriate approach for maintaining fruit quality, blueberries were subjected to four different treatments, a control (CK), 1-MCP, 3% O2 + 10% CO2 (CA), and 1-MCP combined with 3% O2+10% CO2 (1-MCP + CA), then stored for 80 days at 0 °C. It was found that the applications of 1-MCP, CA and 1-MCP + CA were effective at delaying the increase in weight loss and inhibiting the decrease in firmness, total soluble solids (TSS) contents and titratable acidity (TA) contents. In addition, 1-MCP, CA and 1-MCP + CA treatment could significantly suppress MDA accumulation and relative electrolytic leakage promotion. Moreover, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as O2- and H2O2, was reduced by all the treatment, which was associated with increased activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Taken together, our findings indicate 1-MCP, CA and 1-MCP + CA have potential applications in maintaining the quality and improving the antioxidant capacity of harvested blueberries, and 1-MCP + CA is the most effective treatment.

Abstract Pitaya fruits have high senescence rates throughout their postharvest storage period. Additionally, studies have confirmed that melatonin plays a regulatory role in plant senescence. However, the involvement of melatonin in the postharvest senescence of fruits remains unclear. In this study, two cultivars of pitaya fruit, ‘Zihonglong’ and ‘Jinghonglong’, were treated with melatonin and then evaluated for characteristics of senescence while in storage for 10 days. The results showed that melatonin treatment delayed fruit senescence in both pitaya cultivars, as indicated by the inhibition of weight loss, decay incidence, relative membrane permeability, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, as well as the maintenance of the total soluble solids and ascorbic acid contents and the reduced respiration intensity. In addition, melatonin treatment reduced the O2·- production rates, H2O2 contents, and lipoxygenase activities but enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in both pitaya cultivars. These results indicate that melatonin may contribute to delaying senescence in pitaya fruits. This study shows the potential of the use of melatonin in the postharvest storage of pitaya fruits, as well as other horticultural fruits.
