CONTEXTO: Anualmente, milhões de pessoas são vítimas de trauma no mundo. Além de suas consequências sociais e econômicas, muitos dos pacientes necessitam de tratamento cirúrgico, gerando, portanto, maiores riscos à vida. O tromboembolismo venoso, consequência da trombose venosa profunda, é uma importante causa de morbimortalidade em pós-operatórios e pode ser evitado com profilaxia adequada. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a utilização da profilaxia medicamentosa para trombose venosa profunda em pacientes submetidos à cirurgia do trauma de emergência, em um hospital-escola. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal analítico, com 153 pacientes internados no Hospital Universitário Cajuru, em Curitiba, no Paraná, durante dois meses. Foram analisados prospectivamente prontuários de pacientes que necessitaram de cirurgia devido a trauma. O estudo incluiu pacientes classificados como alto e médio risco para trombose venosa profunda e avaliou-se a realização, ou não, da profilaxia medicamentosa. A análise estatística foi feita de forma descritiva. RESULTADOS: Dos 153 pacientes incluídos no estudo, 99 (64,7%) foram classificados como alto risco para trombose venosa e 54 (35,3%) como médio, sendo que 144 (94%) não receberam profilaxia medicamentosa. Dos nove (6%) pacientes que receberam profilaxia medicamentosa, um foi estratificado como médio risco e os outros oito de alto risco. Dos pacientes que receberam profilaxia, em apenas quatro a orientação foi adequada. CONCLUSÕES: A profilaxia para trombose venosa não é realizada de maneira rotineira nos pacientes de médio e alto risco para trombose venosa profunda que são submetidos à cirurgia do trauma e, quando realizada, muitas vezes é inadequada.

BACKGROUND: Annually, millions of people are victims of trauma around the world. Besides the social and economic consequences caused by it, many of these patients need surgical treatment, thus generating greater risk to life. Venous thromboembolism, a consequence of deep vein thrombosis, represents a major cause of the morbidity and mortality in postoperative state, and it could be avoided with adequate prophylaxis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of chemoprophylaxis for deep vein thrombosis, in patients undergoing emergency trauma surgery in a teaching hospital. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted with 153 patients admitted to Cajuru University Hospital, in Curitiba, Paraná, in a two-month period. Records of patients who required surgery due to trauma were prospectively analyzed. The study included those classified as high and medium risk for deep vein thrombosis. Then, it was identified whether or not the drug prophylaxis was used. A statistical analysis was descriptively performed. RESULTS: Of the 153 patients included, 99 (64.7%) were classified as high risk for deep vein thrombosis and 54 (35.3%) as medium risk. Of the total, 144 (94%) did not receive prophylaxis and nine (6%) did. On those who received prophylaxis, only four patients received the adequate. CONCLUSIONS: Prophylaxis of venous thrombosis disease is not performed routinely in patients of medium and high risk of developing deep vein thrombosis, who underwent trauma surgery. And, when performed, it is often inappropriate.

Chrotopterus auritus (Peters, 1856) (Phyllostomidae, Chiroptera) é a única espécie carnívora de morcego registrada para o estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Neste trabalho a dieta e o uso de abrigos diurnos foram estudados. Sete cavernas foram monitoradas, a cada quinze dias, no período de maio/2002 a abril/2003, nos municípios de Machadinho e Barracáo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. A dieta foi estudada por meio da análise das fezes (n=67) e restos alimentares (n=63) coletados quinzenalmente em cada abrigo. Mamíferos, aves e artrópodes constituíram a base alimentar de C. auritus. O resultado do exame das fezes não evidencia a preferência por presas como mamíferos, aves ou artrópodes, pois não há diferença significativa na freqüéncia de ocorréncia dos mesmos. O mesmo resultado foi obtido na comparacáo dos itens alimentares constantes ñas fezes entre as estacóes do ano. Dentre os mamíferos consumidos predominaram os roedores; dentre as aves, os passeriformes e dentre os artrópodes, os coleópteros. Frutos foram consumidos em menor freqüéncia, cerca de 5.9% do total das amostras. C. auritus esteve presente durante todo o período de estudo em cavernas, variando em número de indivíduos e abrigos ocupados. Observouse coabitacáo com Desmodus rotundus e Myotis nigricans.

Chrotopterus auritus (Peters, 1856) (Phyllostomidae, Chiroptera) is the only species of carnivorous bat recorded in Rio Grande do Sul state. In this work we identified the diet Ítems and observed their spatial distribution within roosting sites at daytime. We monitored seven caves, every fifteen days, from may/2002 to april/2003, in Machadinho and Barracáo counties, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The diet was inferred from fecal samples (n=67) and food remains (n=63). Mammals, birds and arthropods, composed the diet of the C. auritus. C. auritus did not show preference by food Ítems, such as mammals, birds or arthropods, because there were no significant differences among them in fecal samples. The result was similar when comparing the presence of these Ítems between seasons. Rodents, Passeriformes and Coleopterans were the prevailing Ítems in the diet of the C. auritus. Fruits were consumed occasionally, about 5.9% of the total of the samples. C. auritus was, during the whole study period, present in the studied caves, varying in number of individuáis and shelters. Cohabitation with Desmodus rotundus and Myotis nigricans was observed.

The reproduction of Bothrops jararaca (Wied, 1824) in captivity in ordened to determine the intercourse period, births, number of neonates, proportion of males and females per litter were performed between 1989 and 1999. Fifty eight females were observed, 16 intercourses in captivity, 45 females arrived already fertilized from nature and 53 litters, resulting on the birth of 426 live neonates, 67 infertile egg masses, 18 stillborn neonates and 4 abnormal neonates. The intercourse period was from february to december and the births happened between february and may. From the two gestacional periods observed, the shortest one was 152 days and the longest 239. The average amount of live neonates per litter was 8,04. Among 323 neonates, 47,68% were males and 52,32% were females. During the first year of life, 75,71% of the females and 71,54% of the males died, and 2,31% of the females and 0,81% of the males reached the fifth year of life.
