Resumo Religiosidade e espiritualidade (R/E) são geralmente consideradas importantes aliadas no enfrentamento de doenças e sofrimento. Estudos na epilepsia do lobo temporal (ELT) sugerem que o lobo temporal é a base anatômico-funcional de experiências religiosas. Além disso, R/E têm impacto na vida de pacientes com epilepsia (PCE), uma vez que a epilepsia frequentemente está associada a distúrbios psicossociais em pacientes e seus familiares. Objetivo: Investigar R/E em PCE, bem como o impacto de diferentes síndromes epilépticas na R/E dos pacientes. Método: Cem PCE e 50 voluntários saudáveis pareados por idade, sexo e nível educacional foram submetidos a uma entrevista, bem como três questionários previamente validados: Index of Core Spiritual Experience (INSPIRIT-R), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), e Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31). Resultados: As médias de idade de PCE e controles foram de 35,9 ± 12,4 vs. 36,3 ± 18,1 anos, com escolaridade média de 8,9 ± 3,7 vs. 10,1 ± 4,2 anos. A idade média do início da epilepsia foi de 14,5 ± 12,1 e a frequência de crises mensais foi de 5,9 ± 12,6. Os escores do INSPIRIT-R não foram estatisticamente diferentes entre os pacientes e controles (3,0 ± 0,8 vs. 3,0 ± 0,8); entretanto, os escores do INSPIRIT-R foram significativamente maiores em pacientes com ELT quando comparados com outras síndromes epilépticas (3,2 ± 0,7 vs. 2,8 ± 0,9; p = 0,04). Conclusão: Pacientes com epilepsia do lobo temporal possuem níveis mais altos de religiosidade e espiritualidade.

ABSTRACT Religiosity and spirituality (R/S) are widely regarded as important allies against illness and suffering in general. Findings in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) suggest the temporal lobe as the anatomical-functional basis of religious experiences. Both R/S are relevant in patients with epilepsy (PWE) since epilepsy can lead to psychosocial issues for a significant portion of patients and their families. Objective: To investigate R/S in PWE, as well as the impact of different epileptic syndromes on patients' R/S. Methods: One hundred PWE and 50 healthy volunteers matched for age, sex and educational level were submitted to an interview, as well as three previously validated questionnaires: Index of Core Spiritual Experience (INSPIRIT-R), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31). Results: PWE's and control's mean ages were 35.9 ± 12.4 vs. 36.3 ± 18.1 years, mean schooling was 8.9 ± 3.7 vs. 10.1 ± 4.2 years. The mean age of epilepsy onset was 14.5 ± 12.1 and monthly frequency of seizures was 5.9 ± 12.6. INSPIRIT-R's scores were not statistically significantly different between patients and controls (3.0 ± 0.8 vs. 3.0 ± 0.8); however, INSPIRIT-R's scores were significantly higher in TLE patients when compared with other epilepsy syndromes (3.2 ± 0.7 vs. 2.8 ± 0.9; p = 0.04). Conclusion: Temporal lobe epilepsy patients have higher levels of R/S.

In this study an analytical method, based on gas chromatography with flame ionization detection, using a short column and response factor (GCSCRF), was validated for the quantification of fatty acid alkyl esters (methylic or ethylic). During the validation process, the proposed method was employed to analyze twenty samples of fatty acid methyl esters and fatty acid ethyl esters. Biodiesel samples were produced from soybean oil and the validated method was found to be selective, being able to separate and identify every ester species present in the samples according to its carbon number. When the method was submitted to some variations in the sample preparation procedure, it remained robust. Limits of detection and quantification were 6.76 and 20.4 mg mL-1, respectively. The suggested method also showed great precision when successive analyses were carried out for different analysts, with standard deviation (SD) 0.6 for repeatibility and relative standard deviation (RSD) percentage 7.3% for intermediate precision, excellent accuracy when compared to other reference methods (EN 14103 and high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet dection (HPLC-UV)) and recovery studies.

ABSTRACT Bacterial halo blight, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae, is an important disease of coffee crop occurring in Brazil and other countries. In recent years, outbreaks of this disease have damaged several coffee crops in Brazil. Aggressiveness and genetic diversity of 25 strains of P. s. pv. garcae, obtained between the years 1958 and 2011, in 23 cities of São Paulo and Minas Gerais states, as well as three strains from Kenya were evaluated in this study. The strains were inoculated on coffee seedlings cultivar Mundo Novo, and their genetic diversity was evaluated by ERIC-PCR, REP-PCR, and their combination. All the strains were pathogenic to the coffee seedlings; the results of pathogenicity tests, in both experiments, could be divided in four aggressiviness classes (highly aggressive; aggressive; moderately aggressive and less aggressive). The Kenyan strains grouped separately from the Brazilian strains with ERIC-PCR and the combination of ERIC- and REP-PCR. The Brazilian strains could be grouped in two sub-clusters, the first including the older strains, obtained from 1958 to 1978, and the other comprising the remaining strains. With a few exceptions, strains isolated from 1997 to 2011, grouped mainly by their region of origin, were predominantly isolated from higher altitude regions, above 800 m. This probably occurred because the climatic conditions that prevail in these regions, characterized by milder temperatures and regular rainfall, are favorable for the coffee crop and for the production of high quality coffee beverage, but can be also favorable to bacterial halo blight.

RESUMO: Há várias bactérias que causam problemas para o cafeeiro, incluindo Pseudomonas cichorii, P. syringae pv. garcae, P. syringae pv. tabaci, Burkholderia andropogonis e Xylella fastidiosa, todas elas já descritas no Brasil. Tentativas de diferenciar essas bactérias por testes serológicos de dupla difusão em ágar (dda), com antissoros produzidos contra células íntegras de P. s. pv. garcae, mostraram reações cruzadas, principalmente entre P. s. pv. garcae e P. s. pv. tabaci. Dessa forma, foram produzidos antissoros contra P. s. pv. garcae (linhagem patotipo IBSBF-248 - Coleção de Culturas de Fitobactérias do Instituto Biológico - IBSBF), obtidos por meio de imunizações de coelhos com antígenos de proteínas do complexo proteico da membrana (CPM). Esses antissoros foram testados por dupla difusão em agarose (dda) contra diversas formas de antígenos extraídos de P. cichorii, P. s. pv. garcae e P. s. pv. tabaci [células autoclavadas, células tratadas com formol, exopolissacarídeos (EPS), glicoproteínas (GP) da cápsula bacteriana, proteínas de membrana e suspensão bacteriana (SB) em NaCl 0,85%]. Os resultados mostraram que, dependendo do antígeno e do meio suporte da dupla difusão (com ou sem MgCl2 e/ou azul de tripano), os antissoros reagem somente com P. s. pv. garcae. Desse modo, esses antígenos podem ser usados para a rápida diagnose da mancha aureolada do cafeeiro nos testes de dda.

ABSTRACT: Some bacterial diseases have been described causing problems in coffee, whose causal agents are Pseudomonas cichorii, P. syringae pv. garcae, P. s. pv. tabaci and Burkholderia andropogonis, all of them also occurring in Brazil. Attempts to differentiate these bacteria by double diffusion agar (dda) technique with antisera produced against whole cells of P. s. pv. garcae showed cross-reactions, especially among P. s. pv. garcae and P. s. pv. tabaci. Thus, antisera were produced against P. s. pv. garcae (pathotype strain IBSBF-248 - Phytobacteria Culture Collection of Instituto Biológico - IBSBF), using rabbit immunizations with antigens of the protein complex of membranes. These antisera were tested against different kind of antigens (autoclaved cells, cells treated with formaldehyde, capsule polysaccharides, glycoproteins, bacterial membrane proteins and bacterial suspension in 0.85% NaCl) extracted from P. cichorii, P. s. pv. garcae and P. s. pv. tabaci. The results showed that depending on the kind of antigen and the medium used in the double diffusion test (with or without MgCl2 and/or trypan blue), the antiserum reacted only with P. s. pv. garcae. Thus, these antigens may be used as an auxiliary tool in the rapid diagnosis of bacterial halo blight of coffee in the double diffusion test.

A ocorrência de Pseudomonas viridiflava é descrita em sementes de couve chinesa (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis) importadas do Japão. Do ponto de vista epidemiológico, a detecção dessa bactéria é de extrema importância. Embora já existam, em nosso país, relatos desse patógeno nas culturas de alface, alho, cebola, cenoura, feijão e mandioca, sua presença em sementes de couve chinesa pode se constituir num risco potencial para outras espécies de brássicas aqui cultivadas.

A natural occurrence of Pseudomonas viridiflava in chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis) imported seeds from Japan is described. From the epidemiological point of view, this is a very important observation since the bacterium could be a source of inoculum for other cultived brassicas in Brazil.

Este trabalho descreve um novo método para a reação de acoplamento entre selenetos e teluretos vinílicos e reagentes de Grignard, catalisada por Fe(acac)3 e à temperatura ambiente. A reação ocorre com retenção da configuração, fornecendo os respectivos alquenos em bons a excelentes rendimentos. Este método também é eficiente para a reação de acoplamento de calcogenetos bis-vinílicos com reagentes de Grignard.

A general new method for the cross-coupling reaction between vinylic selenides and tellurides and Grignard reagents catalyzed by Fe(acac)3 at room temperature is described. This reaction proceeded with retention of configuration, providing the respective alkenes in good to excellent yields. This method is also efficient for the coupling reaction of divinyl chalcogenides with Grignard reagents.
