Abstract Introduction COVID-19 can cause persistent symptoms even in mild cases, such as fatigue and dyspnea, which can reduce functional capacity and make it difficult to perform activities of daily living. Objective To compare functional capacity using the pegboard and ring test and the six-minute walk test responses in post-COVID-19 patients according to the ventilatory support used. Methods Cross-sectional study including 40 adults of both sexes after SARS-CoV2 infection between June 2020 and June 2021, with assessment of functional capacity using the pegboard and ring test (upper limbs) and the six-minute walk (lower limbs). Those who reported comprehension deficit or neuromuscular disease were excluded. All participants were evaluated between 15 and 90 days after the onset of symptoms, diagnosed by nasal swab and classified according to the ventilatory support used during the infection. Results The mean age of the participants (n = 40) was 54.30 (±12.76) years, with BMI 28.39 (±4.70) kg/m2 and pulmonary involvement in 51.49 (±17.47)%. A total of 37 participants were hospitalized with a stay of 14.33 (±15.44) days, and 30% were previously immunized, while 7.5% reached the predicted distance covered. The average achieved was 46.44% (398.63 ± 130.58 m) in the distance covered and 39.31% (237.58 ± 85.51) in the movement of rings. Participants who had invasive mechanical ventilation (n = 10) had the worst functional capacity in both tests 265.85 ± 125.11 m and 181.00 ± 90.03 rings, compared to 472.94 ± 88.02 m and 273.25 ± 66.09 rings in non-invasive ventilation (n = 8), 410.32 ± 90.39 m and 257.68 ± 62.84 rings in oxygen therapy (n = 19), 569.00 ± 79.50 m and 203.00 ± 169.00 rings when there was no hospitalization (n = 3). Conclusion Participants who required invasive mechanical ventilation had worse functional capacity, 46% of what was expected in the walk test and 39% of what was expected in the pegboard and ring test.

Resumo Introdução A COVID-19 pode causar sintomas per-sistentes mesmo nos casos leves, como fadiga e dispneia, que podem reduzir a capacidade funcional e a realização das atividades de vida diária. Objetivo Comparar a avaliação da capacidade funcional a partir do teste da argola e caminhada dos 6 minutos pós-COVID-19 con-forme o suporte ventilatório utilizado. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 40 adultos, de ambos os sexos, pós-infecção por SARS-CoV2 entre julho/2020 e julho 2021, com avaliação da capacidade funcional pelos testes da argola (membros superiores) e caminhada (membros inferiores) de 6 minutos. Todos os participantes foram avaliados entre 15 e 90 dias do princípio dos sintomas, diagnosticados por swab nasal, e classificados conforme o suporte ventilatório utilizado durante a infecção. Resultados A média de idade dos participantes (n = 40) foi 54,30 (±12,76) anos, índice de massa corporal 28,39 (±4,70) kg/m2 e acometimento pulmonar em vidro fosco 51,49 (±17,47)%. Trinta e sete participantes foram hospitalizados com permanência de 14,33 (±15,44) dias, 30% previamente imunizados; 7,5% atingiram o predito da distância percorrida. A média alcançada foi de 46,44% (398,63 ± 130,58 m) na distância percorrida e 39,31% (237,58 ± 85,51) em movimento de argolas. Os participantes que utilizaram ventilação mecânica invasiva (n = 10) apresentaram pior capacidade funcional em ambos os testes: 265,85 ± 125,11 m e 181,00 ± 90,03 argolas comparado a 472,94 ± 88,02 m e 273,25 ± 66,09 argolas em ventilação não invasiva (n = 8), 410,32 ± 90,39m e 257,68 ± 62,84 argolas em oxigenoterapia (n = 19), 569,00 ± 79,50 m e 203,00 ± 169,00 argolas sem internação (n = 3). Conclusão Os participantes que necessitaram de ventilação mecânica invasiva apresen-taram pior capacidade funcional, com 46% do esperado no teste de caminhada e 39% no teste de argola de 6 minutos.

The teaching of Biology in schools is very important in the education of students, as it contributes to the development of a solid and comprehensive understanding of living beings  and the biological processes that occur in the natural world. The importance of Biology can be highlighted in three main aspects: scientific knowledge, student motivation and practical classes. Considering these aspects, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of using digital microscopy and printed boards in Biology classes, for high school students, in relation to motivation and immediate learning. The methodology involved a theoretical class on the chosen topic, which was HPV and cervical cancer, followed by practical classes using digital microscopy images and printed plates. Students responded to tests and an understanding that assessed learning and motivation after the interventions. The study allowed us to verify that students' motivation is greater when there is a practical part and the use of microscope images to relate the content, digital microscopy and printed slides cause a high motivation in students who do not have experience and the importance of developing innovative and facilitating tools in the teaching of Biological Sciences. Thus, it is concluded that microscopy, in both forms used in the experiment, is a motivating factor and has a favorable cost, leaving the school to opt for the use of printed boards or digital microscopy, considering its reality.

La enseñanza de la Biología en las escuelas es muy importante en la formación de los estudiantes, ya que contribuye al desarrollo de una comprensión sólida e integral de los seres vivos y de los procesos biológicos que ocurren en el mundo natural. La importancia de la Biología se puede destacar en tres aspectos principales: el conocimiento científico, la motivación del estudiante y las clases prácticas. Considerando estos aspectos, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar los efectos del uso de microscopía digital y pizarras impresas en clases de Biología, para estudiantes de secundaria, en relación con la motivación y el aprendizaje inmediato. La metodología implicó una clase teórica sobre el tema elegido, que fue el VPH y el cáncer de cuello uterino, seguida de clases prácticas utilizando imágenes de microscopía digital y placas impresas. Los estudiantes respondieron pruebas y un cuestionario que evaluó el aprendizaje y la motivación después de las intervenciones. El estudio permitió comprobar que la motivación de los estudiantes es mayor cuando existe una parte práctica y el uso de imágenes microscópicas para relacionar el contenido, la microscopía digital y las láminas impresas provocan una alta motivación en los estudiantes, no mostrando diferencias significativas y la importancia del desarrollo. de herramientas innovadoras y facilitadoras en la enseñanza de las Ciencias Biológicas. Así, se concluye que la microscopía, en las dos formas utilizadas en el experimento, es un factor motivador y tiene un costo favorable, dejando a la escuela optar por el uso de placas impresas o microscopía digital, considerando su realidade.

O ensino de Biologia nas escolas é muito importante na formação dos estudantes, pois contribui para o desenvolvimento de uma compreensão sólida e abrangente dos seres vivos e dos processos biológicos que ocorrem no mundo natural. A importância da Biologia pode ser destacada em três aspectos principais: conhecimento científico, motivação dos estudantes e aulas práticas. Considerando esses aspectos, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da utilização de microscopia digital e de pranchas impressas nas aulas de Biologia, para alunos de ensino médio, em relação à motivação e à aprendizagem imediata. A metodologia envolveu uma aula teórica sobre o tema escolhido que foi HPV e câncer de colo de útero seguida de aulas práticas com o uso de imagens de microscopia digital e de pranchas impressas. Os estudantes responderam a testes e a um questionário que avaliaram aprendizagem e motivação após as intervenções. O estudo permitiu verificar que a motivação dos estudantes é maior quando se tem uma parte prática. Já o uso de imagens de microscópios para relacionar o conteúdo, a microscopia digital e as lâminas impressas causam uma motivação elevada nos estudantes, não apresentando diferenças significativas e a importância do desenvolvimento de ferramentas inovadoras e facilitadoras no ensino de Ciências Biológicas. Dessa forma, conclui-se que a microscopia, em ambas as formas utilizadas no experimento é um fator motivador e de custo favorável, cabendo a escola optar pelo uso das pranchas impressas ou microscopia digital, considerando a sua realidade.

ABSTRACT Given the gap in the literature regarding the peak of oxygen consumption (VO2peak) for adolescents of both sexes, this study aimed to propose an equation to predict the VO2peak in healthy adolescents using the Modified Shuttle Test (MST). This is a cross-sectional study with 84 healthy adolescents between 12 and 18 years old, female and male. The MST is an external paced test, in which the speed increases at each minute. Two MST were performed with at least 30 minutes of rest between them. The test with the longest walked distance was considered for analysis. VO2 was directly monitored by an open circuit spirometry. Mean age was 14.67±1.82 and the walked distance was 864.86±263.48m. Variables included in the prediction equation were walked distance and sex, explaining the VO2peak variability of 53% during MST performance. The prediction equation for VO2peak with the MST was: predicted VO2peak=18.274+(0.18×Distance Walked, meters)+(7.733×Sex); R2=0.53 and p<0.0001 (sex: 0 for girls, 1 for boys). This MST equation, proposed to predict VO2peak in healthy adolescents of both sexes, can be used as a reference to assess exercise capacity in healthy adolescents and to investigate cardiopulmonary function in adolescents with reduced functional capacity.

RESUMEN Dada una laguna en la literatura con respecto a la ecuación para predecir el consumo máximo de oxígeno (VO2) en adolescentes de ambos sexos, el objetivo de este estudio es proponer una ecuación para predecir el VO2máximo en adolescentes sanos usando el shuttle test modificado (MST). Se trata de un estudio transversal, realizado con 84 adolescentes sanos con edades entre 12 y 18 años, de ambos sexos. El MST es una prueba de campo dictada por una señal sonora que indica el aumento de velocidad cada minuto. Se realizaron dos MST con al menos 30 minutos de descanso entre ellos. Para el análisis se consideró la prueba con mayor distancia recorrida. El monitoreo del VO2 fue realizado directamente por espirometría de circuito abierto. La edad media fue de 14,67±1,82 años; y la distancia recorrida, de 864,86±263,48m. Las variables incluidas en la ecuación de predicción fueron la distancia recorrida y el sexo, que explicaron el 53% de la variabilidad del VO2máximo durante la realización del MST. La ecuación de referencia para el VO2máximo predicho con el MST fue VO2máximo previsto=18,274+(0,18×Distancia recorrida, en metros)+(7,733×Sexo); R2=0,53 y p<0,0001 (sexo: 0 para chicas, 1 para chicos). Abstract Background: Elderly patients are more susceptible to Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) and are more likely to develop it in severe forms, (e.g., Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome [ARDS]). Prone positioning is a treatment strategy for severe ARDS; however, its response in the elderly population remains poorly understood. The main objective was to evaluate the predictive response and mortality of elderly patients exposed to prone positioning due to ARDS-COVID-19. Methods: This retrospective multicenter cohort study involved 223 patients aged ≥ 65 years, who received prone position sessions for severe ARDS due to COVID-19, using invasive mechanical ventilation. The PaO2/FiO2 ratio was used to assess the oxygenation response. The 20-point improvement in PaO2/FiO2 after the first prone session was considered for good response. Data were collected from electronic medical records, including demographic data, laboratory/image exams, complications, comorbidities, SAPS III and SOFA scores, use of anticoagulants and vasopressors, ventilator settings, and respiratory system mechanics. Mortality was defined as deaths that occurred until hospital discharge. Results: Most patients were male, with arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus as the most prevalent comorbidities. The non-responders group had higher SAPS III and SOFA scores, and a higher incidence of complications. There was no difference in mortality rate. A lower SAPS III score was a predictor of oxygenation response, and the male sex was a risk predictor of mortality. Conclusion: The present study suggests the oxygenation response to prone positioning in elderly patients with severe COVID-19-ARDS correlates with the SAPS III score. Furthermore, the male sex is a risk predictor of mortality.

Abstract Inferior vena cava leiomyosarcoma (IVCL) is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor. Surgical treatment is a challenge because it must combine free surgical margins with vascular reconstruction, using prosthetic or autologous grafts, primary suture, or simple ligation without vein reconstruction. The ligation option is possible thanks to the slow growth of the tumor, allowing collateral venous circulation to develop. We present a case of an IVCL treated with radical resection without vascular reconstruction. The patient was a 48-year-old female with abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant, asthenia, and postprandial dyspeptic symptoms. Abdominal tomography revealed a mass with an expansive formation located in the infrahepatic segment of the inferior vena cava and reduced vessel lumen. During surgery, vein clamping did not provoke hemodynamic repercussions, suggesting sufficient collateral circulation formation. It was decided to perform a radical resection of the entire portion of the retrohepatic vena cava and ligate the vena cava without vascular reconstruction. The patient recovered without complications.

Resumo O leiomiossarcoma de veia cava inferior (LVCI) é um raro tumor maligno mesenquimal. Seu tratamento cirúrgico é um desafio, pois necessita combinar margens cirúrgicas livres com reconstrução vascular, usando prótese ou enxerto autólogo, sutura primária ou ligadura simples sem reconstrução da veia. A ligadura é possível graças ao lento crescimento do tumor, permitindo o desenvolvimento de circulação venosa colateral. Apresentamos um caso de LVCI tratado por ressecção radical sem reconstrução vascular. Paciente feminina, 48 anos, com dor abdominal em hipocôndrio direito, astenia e sintomas dispépticos pós-prandiais. Tomografia de abdome revelou massa de formação expansiva localizada no segmento infra-hepático da veia cava inferior com redução da luz do vaso. Na cirurgia, o clampeamento da veia não indicou repercussões hemodinâmicas, sugerindo formação de circulação colateral suficiente. Decidiu-se pela ressecção radical em toda a porção da veia cava retro-hepática e ligadura da veia cava sem reconstrução vascular. A paciente evoluiu sem intercorrências.

Abstract Mites of the species Lynxacarus radovskyi, which are commonly found on domestic cats in Brazil, can cause discomfort, itching, and alopecia. The development of new, safer and more effective treatments with a broad spectrum of activity, including the use of isoxazolines, is needed. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of transdermal fluralaner in domestic cats naturally infested with L. radovskyi. Twenty cats were evaluated by trichograms and divided into two groups of 10 animals. The control group was not treated, while the treated group was given a single topical dose of fluralaner, as per the manufacturer’s instructions. The cats were reassessed for the presence of L. radovskyi eggs and mites on days D+7, D+14, D+28, D+42, D+56, D+70, D+84, and D+98. As of D+42, all the animals (100%) tested negative for mites, and remained parasite-free until the end of the study, while the control group tested positive throughout the experiment. It can be concluded that a single dose of fluralaner applied topically was effective in treating cats naturally infested with L. radovskyi.

Resumo Os ácaros da espécie Lynxacarus radovskyi, comumente encontrados em gatos domésticos, no Brasil, podem causar desconforto, prurido e alopecia. É necessário o desenvolvimento de novos tratamentos mais seguros e eficazes com amplo espectro de ação, incluindo o uso de isoxazolinas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia do fluralaner transdérmico em gatos domésticos naturalmente infestados com L. radovskyi. Vinte gatos foram avaliados por tricogramas e divididos em dois grupos de 10 animais. O grupo controle não foi tratado, enquanto o grupo tratado recebeu uma única dose tópica de fluralaner, conforme instruções do fabricante. Os gatos foram reavaliados quanto à presença de ovos e ácaros de L. radovskyi nos dias D+7, D+14, D+28, D+42, D+56, D+70, D+84 e D+98. A partir de D+42, todos os animais (100%) testaram negativo para ácaros e permaneceram livres do parasita até o final do estudo, enquanto o grupo controle apresentou resultado positivo durante todo o experimento. Pode-se concluir que uma única dose de fluralaner aplicada topicamente foi eficaz no tratamento de gatos naturalmente infestados com L. radovskyi.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVES: In tuberculosis treatment, corticosteroids are used as adjuvants, especially in meningeal/pericardial tuberculosis. In other forms of the disease, especially in severe tuberculosis requiring mechanical ventilation, its use is controversial. The aim of the present study is to assess whether the use of corticosteroids in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis patients in mechanical ventilation is associated with in-hospital mortality. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. Tuberculosis patients >18 years requiring mechanical ventilation, admitted to the emergency department or intensive care unit, were included. Data on corticosteroid use and mortality were collected. RESULTS: In total, 467 patients were included in the analysis; 399 used corticosteroids and 68 were noncorticosteroid users. The mortality rate was higher among corticosteroid users (59.9%) than in noncorticosteroid users (41.2%) (p=0.010). The total dose of corticosteroid in prednisone equivalents was not different between survivors and nonsurvivors (median [interquartile range]: 80 mg [5–56.6 mg] vs. 80 mg [50–135 mg]; p=0.881). CONCLUSIONS: Tuberculosis patients in mechanical ventilation who used corticosteroids had a higher mortality rate than those who did not use corticosteroids. The role of corticosteroids in pulmonary tuberculosis, especially in critically ill patients, remains unclear and needs further evaluation in prospective studies.

Abstract Objective: To analyze the prevalence of Mycobacterium leprae detection and the associated factors among social contacts in the school environment of multibacillary cases living in a hyperendemic municipality of the state of Mato Grosso. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 236 social contacts of multibacillary leprosy from public schools and residents in Cuiabá (Mato Grosso) in 2018. The sources of information were interviews and nasal swab tests for molecular analysis by polymerase chain reaction - PCR. For the prevalence ratio estimates, crude and adjusted analyses were performed using robust Poisson regression and their respective confidence intervals (95% CI). The ArcGIS 9.1 software was used for the geographic distribution analyses. Results: The prevalence of detection of M. leprae in social contacts was 14%. A total of 63.6% of the schools surveyed had 5.1% to 50% of the social contacts of leprosy with positive PCR. The analysis of the geographic distribution in the neighborhoods showed a high prevalence of infection, being higher than 50% in some localities. The highest proportion of positive results occurred in the northern region of the city and from a precarious socioeconomic class. Conclusion: The results showed a high prevalence of detection of M. leprae among social contacts in areas with poor socioeconomic conditions. In these regions, there is a greater risk of

RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar fatores que levam a uma resposta positiva da oxigenação e fatores preditivos de mortalidade após a pronação. Métodos: Estudo de coorte retrospectivo multicêntrico envolvendo sete hospitais brasileiros. Os critérios de inclusão foram idade > 18 anos com diagnóstico suspeito ou confirmado de COVID-19, ventilação mecânica invasiva, relação PaO2/FIO2 < 150 mmHg e pronação. Após a primeira sessão de pronação, uma melhora de 20 mmHg na relação PaO2/FIO2 foi definida como resposta positiva. Resultados: O estudo envolveu 574 pacientes, dos quais 412 (72%) apresentaram resposta positiva à primeira sessão de pronação. A regressão logística múltipla mostrou que os respondedores apresentaram menores pontuações no Simplified Acute Physiology Score III (SAPS III) e no SOFA e menores níveis de dímero D (p = 0,01; p = 0,04; e p = 0,04, respectivamente). Sugeriu-se que a pontuação no SAPS III e a PaO2/FIO2 iniciais seriam preditores da resposta da oxigenação. A taxa de mortalidade foi de 69,3%. Maior risco de mortalidade foi associado à idade (OR = 1,04 [IC95%: 1,01-1,06]), tempo até a primeira sessão de pronação (OR = 1,18 [IC95%: 1,06-1,31]), número de sessões (OR = 1,31 [IC95%: 1,00-1,72]), porcentagem de comprometimento pulmonar (OR = 1,55 [IC95%: 1,02-2,35]) e imunossupressão (OR = 3,83 [IC95%: 1,35-10,86]). Conclusões: Nossos resultados mostram que a maioria dos pacientes de nossa amostra apresentou resposta positiva da oxigenação após a primeira sessão de pronação. No entanto, a taxa de mortalidade foi elevada, provavelmente em virtude do estado de saúde e número de comorbidades dos pacientes e da gravidade de sua doença. Nossos resultados também sugerem que a pontuação no SAPS III e a PaO2/FIO2 inicial predizem a resposta da oxigenação; além disso, idade, tempo até a primeira sessão de pronação, número de sessões, comprometimento pulmonar e imunossupressão podem predizer mortalidade.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify factors that lead to a positive oxygenation response and predictive factors of mortality after prone positioning. Methods: This was a retrospective, multicenter, cohort study involving seven hospitals in Brazil. Inclusion criteria were being > 18 years of age with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, being on invasive mechanical ventilation, having a PaO2/FIO2 ratio < 150 mmHg, and being submitted to prone positioning. After the first prone positioning session, a 20 mmHg improvement in the PaO2/FIO2 ratio was defined as a positive response. Results: The study involved 574 patients, 412 (72%) of whom responded positively to the first prone positioning session. Multiple logistic regression showed that responders had lower Simplified Acute Physiology Score III (SAPS III)/SOFA scores and lower D-dimer levels (p = 0.01; p = 0.04; and p = 0.04, respectively). It was suggested that initial SAPS III and initial PaO2/FIO2 were predictors of oxygenation response. The mortality rate was 69.3%. Increased risk of mortality was associated with age (OR = 1.04 [95 CI: 1.01-1.06]), time to first prone positioning session (OR = 1.18 [95 CI: 1.06-1.31]), number of sessions (OR = 1.31 [95% CI: 1.00-1.72]), proportion of pulmonary impairment (OR = 1.55 [95% CI: 1.02-2.35]), and immunosuppression (OR = 3.83 [95% CI: 1.35-10.86]). However, the mortality rate was high, probably due to the health status and the number of comorbidities of the patients, as well as the severity of their disease. Our results also suggest that SAPS III and the initial PaO2/FIO2 predict the oxygenation response; in addition, age, time to first prone positioning, number of sessions, pulmonary impairment, and immunosuppression can predict mortality.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To compare the incidence of hearing loss among adults stratified by the occurrence of hypertension, and to investigate the association between hypertension and hearing loss. METHODS Longitudinal observational study, part of the Estudo Longitudinal da Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil, Longitudinal Study on Adult’s Health). Data from the first and second waves were analyzed, including information from audiological assessment and general health of the subjects. As outcome, we considered the presence of hearing loss (hearing thresholds above 25 dBHL at frequencies from 500 Hz to 8 kHz) and, as exposure variable, hypertension (report of medical diagnosis of hypertension; and/or use of drugs to treat hypertension; and/or pressure systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg; or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg). As covariables for adjustment were considered: sex, age, education, race / ethnicity, income, smoking, diabetes, and occupational exposure to noise. Poisson regression analysis was conducted, estimating the crude and adjusted relative risks, with 95% confidence intervals, in order to assess the factors associated with hearing loss. RESULTS In crude analyses, the incidence of hearing loss was higher for subjects with hypertension (9.7% versus 5.4%). The crude relative risks for hearing loss was almost double (1.93; 95%CI: 1.10–3.39) for subjects with hypertension in the right ear. In the adjusted analyses, the relative risks was not significant for the hypertension variable (1.42; 95%CI: 0.75–2.67). Being 60 years or older (RR: 5.41; 95%CI: 2.79–10.50) showed a statistically significant association with hearing loss, indicating that older adults have higher relative risks for hearing loss. CONCLUSION In the adjusted analyses controlled for multiple risk factors there was no association between hypertension and hearing loss. The dichotomous variable age (being 60 years or older), on the other hand, has shown a significant association with hearing loss.

Abstract Background: Cryptoccocal meningitis continues to present high incidence among AIDS patients. The treatment of choice is the synergistic combination of flucytosine (5-FC) with amphotericin B deoxycholate (AmBd) or its lipid formulations. However, 5-FC is unavailable in many countries and AmB demands hospitalization. The combination of AmB with the fungistatic fluconazole (FLC) or the use of high FLC daily doses alone became the choice. Nonetheless, sterilization of cerebrospinal fluid is delayed with FLC monotherapy, mainly with high fungal burden. These findings suggest the search for new antifungal compounds, such as liriodenine. Methods: Liriodenine antifungal activity was evaluated by three procedures: determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) on 30 strains of the Cryptococcus neoformans (C. neoformans) complex and 30 of the Cryptococcus gattii (C. gattii) complex, using EUCAST methodology and amphotericin B deoxycholate as control; performing the time-kill methodology in two strains of the C. neoformans complex and one of the C. gattii complex; and injury to cryptococcal cells, evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Liriodenine absorption and safety at 0.75 and 1.50 mg.kg-1 doses were evaluated in BALB/c mice. Results: Liriodenine MICs ranged from 3.9 to 62.5 μg.mL-1 for both species complexes, with no differences between them. Time-kill methodology confirmed its concentration-dependent fungicidal effect, killing all the strains below the limit of detection (33 CFU.mL-1) at the highest liriodenine concentration (32-fold MIC), with predominant activity during the first 48 hours. Liriodenine induced severe Cryptococcus alterations - cytoplasm with intense rarefaction and/or degradation, injury of organelles, and presence of vacuoles. Liriodenine was better absorbed at lower doses, with no histopathological alterations on the digestive tract. Conclusion: The fungicidal activity confirmed by time-kill methodology, the intense Cryptococcus injury observed by TEM, the absorption after gavage administration, and the safety at the tested doses indicate that the liriodenine molecule is a promising drug lead for development of anticryptococcal agents.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever o perfil clínico epidemiológico da dengue em Anápolis, Goiás - BR entre os anos 2016 a 2020. Métodos: estudo descritivo de natureza quantitativa. Foram utilizados dados da ficha de notificação de dengue cadastrada no Departamento de Vigilância Epidemiológica. Utilizado o teste qui-quadrado com nível de significância cinco (5%) (p<0,05). Resultados: foram notificados 27.544 casos com o pico em 2019, sendo 54,2% do sexo feminino, faixa etária de 25 a 44 anos 36,7% e cor parda 70,3%. Dos casos ocorridos, 97,7% não foram hospitalizados, predominaram a dengue clássica em 98% e obteve-se cura em 99,9% dos casos. Houve diferença significativa em relação à faixa etária e à classificação da dengue, hospitalização e evolução clínica (p= 0,001). Conclusão: evidencia-se que a dengue é prevalente em Anápolis, sendo necessárias estratégias de prevenção e controle do vetor, principalmente, nos períodos de sazonalidade.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the clinical epidemiological profile of dengue in Anápolis, Goiás - BR between the years 2016 to 2020. Methods: descriptive study of a quantitative nature. Data from the dengue notification form registered in the Epidemiological Surveillance Department were used. Chi-square test was used with significance level five (5%) (p<0.05). Results: 27,544 cases were notified with the peak in 2019, being 54.2% female, age group 25 to 44 years 36.7% and brown color 70.3%. Of the cases that occurred, 97.7% were not hospitalized, classic dengue predominated in 98% and cure was obtained in 99.9% of cases. There was a significant difference regarding age group and dengue classification, hospitalization, and clinical evolution (p= 0.001). Conclusion: It is evident that dengue is prevalent in Anápolis, and strategies of prevention and control of the vector are necessary, especially during seasonal periods.

Se utilizaron datos de la ficha de notificación de dengue registrada en el Departamento de Vigilancia Epidemiológica. Se utilizó la prueba de chi-cuadrado con un nivel de significación del cinco (5%) (p<0,05). Resultados: Se notificaron 27.544 casos con el pico en 2019, siendo el 54,2% mujeres, el grupo de edad de 25 a 44 años el 36,7% y el color marrón el 70,3%. De los casos ocurridos, el 97,7% no fueron hospitalizados, el dengue clásico predominó en el 98% y se obtuvo la curación en el 99,9% de los casos. Hubo una diferencia significativa con respecto al grupo de edad y la clasificación del dengue, la hospitalización y la evolución clínica (p= 0,001). Conclusión: se evidencia que el dengue es prevalente en Anápolis, siendo necesarias estrategias de prevención y control del vector, principalmente, en los periodos de sazonalidad.

Resumen Introducción: Gaiadendron punctatum es una especie hemiparásita perteneciente a uno de los tres géneros basales de la familia Loranthaceae, siendo los otros dos Nuytsia y Atkinsonia. El género está conformado por dos especies distribuidas en regiones montañosas de Sudamérica y Centroamérica. Tanto los estudios embriológicos, como los filogenéticos, indican una tendencia hacia la reducción del gineceo y de los óvulos en la familia, cuya morfología respalda la circunscripción de la tribu Gaiadendreae (Gaiadendron y Atkinsonia). Estudios filogenéticos moleculares sugieren que Nuytsia, Atkinsonia y Gaiadendron divergieron sucesivamente, formando un grado en la base de la familia Loranthaceae, pero los valores en los que se sustenta son bajos. Objetivo: En el presente trabajo se describe la anatomía floral de la especie Gaiadendron punctatum con el objetivo de complementar la información embriológica, de manera que se pueda comparar directamente la morfología floral y los caracteres embriológicos entre los tres géneros basales de la familia Loranthaceae y reevaluar sus relaciones. Métodos: Las flores de G. punctatum fueron recolectadas en diferentes estados de desarrollo, se realizaron cortes histológicos seriados, se tiñeron con azul de astra y fucsina, y se analizaron mediante microscopía óptica. Resultados: Las inflorescencias mostraron un desarrollo acrópeto, las flores bisexuales presentaron ovario ínfero con presencia de una estructura en forma de anillo, carente de tejidos vasculares llamada calículo; el ovario se compone por siete lóculos basales, cada uno con un óvulo atégmico tenuinucelar. Por encima de los óvulos, el mamelón se fusiona con los tejidos adyacentes. El androceo está conformado por siete estambres epipétalos, las anteras presentan un endotecio fibroso y granos de polen tricolpados. La dehiscencia de las anteras es mediante una sola apertura longitudinal. Conclusiones: Los resultados del presente trabajo demuestran que Gaiadendron y Atkinsonia comparten anteras dorsifijas y versátiles, mientras Gaiadendron y Nuytsia comparten el tipo de dehiscencia anteral y por otro lado Gaiadendron comparte los caracteres de mamelón amilífero y calículo no vascularizado con la tribu Elytrantheae. La clasificación del género Gaiadendron con respecto a los dos géneros basales de la familia debe ser objeto de investigación (análisis filogenético combinado) que permita dirimir si la tribu Gaiadendrae es un clado, un grado o dos géneros más lejanamente emparentados.

Abstract Introducction: Gaiadendron punctatum is a hemiparasitic species of Loranthaceae (Tribe Gaiadendreae) that is widely distributed in mountainous regions of Central and South America. Embryological and phylogenetic studies in the family indicate a trend towards reduction of the gynoecium and ovules, the morphology of which supports the current circumscription of Tribe Gaiadendreae (Gaiadendron and Atkinsonia). Molecular phylogenetic studies suggest that Nuytsia, Atkinsonia and Gaiadendron diverged successively, forming a grade at the base of the Loranthaceae, but support values are low. Objetive: In the present study, the floral anatomy of Gaiadendron punctatum was investigated in order to provide additional data to permit comparisons among the three basal-most genera in the Loranthaceae and reevaluate their relationships. Methods: Flowers of G. punctatum were collected at different developmental stages and serial sections were prepared and analyzed by light microscopy. Results: Inflorescence development is acropetal; the flowers are bisexual with an inferior ovary surmounted by a calyculus, a ring-shaped structure lacking vascular tissue; the ovary is comprised of seven basal locules, each with an ategmic, tenuinucellate ovule. Above the locules is a mamelon that is fused with the adjacent tissues. The androecium is comprised of seven epipetalous stamens, the anthers with fibrous endothecium dehiscence through a single longitudinal slit, releasing tricolpated pollen. Conclusions: The results of this study show that Gaiadendron and Atkinsonia share versatile, dorsifixed anthers, while Gaiadendron and Nuytsia share the same mode of anther dehiscence. On the other hand, Gaiadendron shares with members of Tribe Elytrantheae an amyliferous mamelon and an unvascularized calyculus. Combined phylogenetic analyses of morphological and molecular data are desirable to determine whether Tribe Gaiadendreae comprises a clade, a grade or if the two genera are more distantly related.
