ABSTRACT Purpose: To explore the role and mechanism of curcumin (Cur) in reducing oxidative stress damage in rats with nephrolithiasis induced by ethylene glycol (EG). Methods: Thirty male rats were divided into normal control, model, positive (10% potassium citrate), Cur-10 (10 mg/kg curcumin) and Cur-20 (20 mg/kg curcumin) groups. Results: The results of kidney tissue section stained by hematoxylin-eosin and von Kossa showed that curcumin treatment can inhibit the formation of kidney stones. The biochemical test results showed that the urea (Ur), creatinine (Cr), uric acid (UA), inorganic phosphorus and Ca2+ concentrations in urine decreased after being treated with curcumin. There were significant differences between different doses of curcumin (P < 0.05). Compared with the Cur-10 group, Cur-20 had a more significant inhibitory effect on malondialdehyde (MDA) (P < 0.05). In addition, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection and immunohistochemical results indicated that the osteopontin (OPN) in the kidney was significantly reduced after curcumin treatment. Conclusions: Curcumin could reduce the oxidative stress damage caused by EG-induced kidney stones.

Abstract We aimed to evaluate the effect of red meat diet on gut microbiota in mice. Balb/c mice at weaning were randomized into control group and red meat groups with different proportions (25%, 50%, and 75%). Mice were fed with a standard pellet diet as control group, while those were fed with different proportions of red meat diet as red meat groups. After 8 weeks, they were sacrificed and their intestinal contents were obtained for 16S rRNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. Our results showed that there were significant-structural differences among the four groups. The top-two most abundant phylum were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. In the red meat groups, the abundance of Bacteroidetes was increased, but the abundance of Firmicutes was decreased. At the family level, Bacteroidaceae and Family XIII were significantly higher in the high-dose group than those in the control group. There were also significant differences in abundance of many genera. In conclusion, different proportions of red meat diet may lead to changes in gut microbial flora in mice. These changes may be pathological and may be related to the frequent occurrence of many diseases.

Abstract Objective To explore the molecular mechanism of neuropathologic damage induced by radiofrequency ablation at different temperatures. Methods This is basic research, and 36 SD rats were used to construct the neuropathological injury model. The rats were subjected to radiofrequency stimulation at different temperatures and were divided into 6 groups according to the temperature injury: 42°, 47°, 52°, 57°, 62°, and 67°C groups. Conduction time, conduction distance, and nerve conduction velocity were recorded after temperature injury. HE-staining was used to observe the histopathological morphology of the sciatic nerve. The expression of SCN9A, SCN3B, and NFASC protein in sciatic nerve tissue were detected by western blot. Results With the increase in temperature, nerve conduction velocity gradually decreased, and neurons were damaged when the temperature was 67°C. HE-staining showed that the degrees of degeneration of neurons in rats at 47°, 52°, 57°, 62°, and 67°C were gradually increased. The expression of SCN9A, SCN3B protein in 57°, 62°, 67°C groups were much higher than that of NC, 42°, 47°, 52°C groups. However, the expression of NFASC protein in 57°, 62°, 67°C groups was much lower than that of the NC, 42°, 47°, 52°C groups. Conclusion There was a positive correlation between temperature caused by the radiofrequency stimulation to neuropathological damage. The mechanism is closely related to the expression of SCN9A, SCN3B, and NFASC protein in nerve tissue caused by heat transfer injury.

We report a case of drug-induced lupus (DIL) on a Chinese woman caused by methimazole (MMI). This report discusses DIL associated with MMI and briefly reviewed the literature concerning to anti-thyroid DIL.

A doença de Haff é uma síndrome que consiste de rabdomiólise não explicada. Pacientes que apresentam a doença de Haff relatam ter ingerido pescado nas últimas 24 horas antes do início da doença. A maioria dos pacientes sobrevive apresentando breve recuperação. O presente artigo é o primeiro relato de doença de Haff complicada por falência de múltiplos órgãos após ingestão de lagostim. Um homem chinês de 66 anos de idade ingeriu lagostim cozido na noite de 23 de junho de 2013. Chegou ao hospital 2 dias mais tarde, sendo admitido à unidade de terapia intensiva. Após a admissão, o paciente recebeu o diagnóstico de doença de Haff complicada por falência de múltiplos órgãos. Apesar dos tratamentos de suporte e sintomático, a condição do paciente deteriorou, vindo o mesmo a falecer em consequência da doença. A doença de Haff é uma rara síndrome clínica que é, às vezes, mal diagnosticada. O diagnóstico precoce e o tratamento adequado são essenciais para prevenir a progressão para falência de múltiplos órgãos.

The title compound (E)-1-{4-[bis(4-methoxyphenyl)methyl]piperazin-1-yl}-3-(4-chloro- phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (C28H29ClN2O3, Mr = 476.98) (5) was synthesized and studied by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. Its structure was confirmed by ¹H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS and X-ray single crystal structure determination. Compound 5 crystallized in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c with a = 10.392(2), b = 7.9180(16), c = 30.474(6) Å, β = 97.78(3) °, V = 2484.4(9) ų,Z = 4, Dc = 1.275 g cm-3, F(000) = 1008, μ = 0.186 mm-1,MoKa radiation (λ = 0.71073 Å), R = 0.0692 and wR = 0.1469 for 2046 observed reflections with I 2σ(I). The title compound was screened for the anti-ischaemic activity in vivo. The results showed that compound 5 significantly prolonged the survival time of mice subjected to acute cerebral ischaemia at all doses tested and exhibited potent neuroprotective activity.

In July 2010, cacti with typical phytoplasma symptoms were observed in Yangling district, Shaanxi Province, China. Based on amplification of 16S rRNA gene, phytoplasmas were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) driven with universal primer pairs P1/ P7, followed by a nested PCR with universal primer pairs R16F2n/R16R2. Fragments of expected sizes (1.8 kb and 1.2 kb) were obtained from symptomatic samples, but not from the asymptomatic samples. Sequencing results and BLASTn analysis of the 1806 bp products (P1/P7) showed that the phytoplasma belonged to group 16SrII. Phylogenetic analysis to the R16F2n/R16R2 region and virtual restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) indicated that this phytoplasma was a member of subgroup 16SrII-C. This is the first reported occurrence of a peanut witches'-broom phytoplasma infecting plants in northern areas of China.

Sichuan basin, situated in the west of China, is the fourth biggest basin in China. In order to describe a systematic study of the cry2-type genes resources from Bacillus thuringiensis strains of Sichuan basin, a total of 791 Bacillus thuringiensis strains have been screened from 2650 soil samples in different ecological regions. The method of PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used to identify the type of cry2 genes. The results showed that 322 Bacillus thuringiensis strains harbored cry2-type genes and four different RFLP patterns were found. The combination of cry2Aa/cry2Ab genes was the most frequent (90.4%), followed by cry2Aa (6.8%) and cry2Ab alone (2.5%), and only one novel type of cry2 gene was cloned from one isolate (JF19-2). The full-length of this novel gene was obtained by the method of thermal asymmetric interlaced PCR (Tail-PCR), which was designated as cry2Ag1 (GenBank No. ACH91610) by the Bt Pesticide Crystal Protein Nomenclature Committee. In addition, the result of scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observation showed that these strains had erose, spherical, bipyramidal, and square crystal. And the results of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) demonstrated that these strains harbored about one to three major proteins. These strains exhibited a wide range of insecticidal spectrum toxic to Aedes aegypti (Diptera) and Pieris rapae Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera). Particularly, JF19-2 contained cry2Ag gene had the highest insecticidal activity. All these researches mentioned above revealed the diversity and particularity of cry2-type gene resources from Bacillus thuringiensis strains in Sichuan basin.

Um novo alcalóide denominado Helindicina (1), e o conhecido licopsamina (2) foram isolados das raízes de Heliotropium indicum (Boraginaceae). As estruturas foram estabelecidas tendo como base um amplo estudo de 1D e 2D RMN (COSY, HMBC, HMQC, NOESY) e HREIMS. Este representa o primeiro relato de um alcalóide contendo um anel lacônico no gênero Heliotropium. Estes alcalóides mostraram moderada atividade antioxidante.

Helindicine (1), a new pyrrolizidine alkaloid with unusual structural features, together with the known lycopsamine (2), were isolated from the roots of Heliotropium indicum (Boraginaceae). The structures were established by a combination of 1D and 2D NMR methods (COSY, HMQC, HMBC, and NOESY) and HREIMS. This is the first report of a lactone pyrrolizidine alkaloid in the genus Heliotropium. Compounds 1 and 2 were assayed for antioxidant activity and showed moderate activity.
