Abstract Introduction Studies suggest that diaphragm thickness (DT) is associated with inspiratory muscle strength and consequently, better ventilatory and mechanical efficiency. On the other hand, infectious diseases such as COVID-19 may impact the structure and function of the respiratory system. Objective Assess the association between DT and the physical performance (PP) of athletes and the effects of COVID-19 infection on these parameters. Methods This is a cross-sectional study of 63 athletes of both sexes from different sport modalities (women: 16.67 ± 5.03 years, 52.09 ± 14.01 kg, 155.90 ± 13.86 cm; men: 23.44 ± 9.65 years, 72.24 ± 14.18 kg, 174.84 ± 6.84 cm), submitted to DT assessment using ultrasound, followed by the PP(Yo-Yo) test) to determine maximum oxygen intake (VO2max). Pearson’s correlation was used to determine the association between VO2max and DT, and the Student’s t-test for differences between athletes with a positive and negative diagnosis for COVID-19. The significance level was set at 5%. Results There was no association between DT and PP (r = 0.30 and p = 0.22) or between athletes unaffected and affected by COVID-19 in relation to DT (57.00 ± 0.26 vs 52.00 ± 0.25%; p = 0.91) and PP (43.88 ± 2.29 vs 38.34 ± 13.61 ml/kg/min; p = 0.69). Conclusion DT was not associated with maximum oxygen intake in athletes. In addition, athletes infected by COVID-19 exhibited no differences in VO2max or DT when compared to nonaffected individuals.

Resumo Introdução Estudos sugerem que a espessura diafrag-mática (ED) está associada à força muscular inspiratória e, consequentemente, à melhor eficiência ventilatória e mecânica. Por outro lado, doenças infecciosas como a COVID-19 podem impactar a estrutura e função do apa-relho respiratório. Objetivo Avaliar a associação entre a ED e o desempenho físico (DF) de atletas e os efeitos da infecção por COVID-19 sobre esses parâmetros. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo transversal envolvendo 63 atletas de diferentes modalidades esportivas, de ambos os sexos (feminino: 16,67 ± 5,03 anos, 52,09 ± 14,01 kg, 155,90 ± 13,86 cm; masculino 23,44 ± 9,65 anos, 72,24 ± 14,18 kg, 174,84 ± 6,84 cm), que foram submetidos à avaliação da ED por meio de ultrassom e, em seguida, ao teste de DF (Yo-Yo test) para determinar o consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max). Utilizou-se a correlação de Pearson para verificar a associação entre VO2max e ED, e o teste t de Student para diferenças entre atletas com diagnóstico positivo e negativo para COVID-19. O nível de significância foi ajustado em 5%. Resultados Não houve associação entre ED e DF (r = 0,30 e p = 0,22) e não houve diferença entre os atletas não infectados e infectados por COVID-19 em relação à ED (57,00 ± 0,26 vs 52,00 ± 0,25%; p = 0,91) e DF (43,88 ± 2,29 vs 38,34 ± 13,61 ml/kg/min; p = 0,69). Conclusão A ED não foi associada ao consumo máximo de oxigênio em atletas. Além disso, atletas infectados por COVID-19 não exibiram diferenças no VO2max e ED em relação aos não infectados.

O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar parâmetros genéticos de teste de progênies de Enterolobium contortisiliquum, implantada na Fazenda Experimental de Luís Antônio (IF-SP), SP, para fins de seleção e produção de sementes. Foram estimados os coeficientes de variação genética e herdabilidade e correlações genéticas e fenotípicas para os caracteres silviculturais, diâmetro a 1,30 m de altura do solo (DAP) e altura total de plantas, aos 19, 20 e 21 anos de idade e para bifurcação (BIF) e retidão do tronco (RET) fuste, aos 19 anos de idade. O teste F das análises de variância detectou variações significativas entre as progênies para os caracteres DAP, altura nas três idades avaliadas e retidão do tronco, o que indica que a média populacional do teste pode ser melhorada pela seleção entre progênies. A estimativa do coeficiente de herdabilidade em nível de progênies (h²m, mínimo de 0,50) para os caracteres foi alta, e em nível de plantas individuais (h²i, mínimo de 0,18) e dentro de progênies (h²i, mínimo de 0,14) foi mediana, indicando que a população pode ser melhorada pela seleção entre e dentro de progênies. Foram também detectadas altas e significativas correlações genéticas e fenotípicas entre os caracteres de crescimento com a mesma idade, e entre aqueles com diferentes idades, portanto a seleção direta em um caráter permite a seleção indireta em outro. Os resultados mostraram o potencial de transformar este teste de progênies em um pomar de sementes para a produção de sementes para reflorestamentos comerciais e ambientais.

The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters on a progeny test of Enterolobium contortisiliquum, located at the Fazenda Experimental de Luíz Antônio (IF-SP), São Paulo State, Brazil, for genetic selection and seed production. The coefficients of genetic variation and heritability, as well as the genetic and phenotypic correlations for the silvicultural traits diameter at breast height (DBH) and total height of plants at the age of 19, 20, and 21 years and bifurcation (BIF) and stem straightness (RET), at the age of 19 years were estimated. The F test of analysis of variance detected significant variation among the progeny for the traits DBH, height in the three tested ages, and straightness of the trunk, which indicates that the tested population can be improved by selection among progenies. The estimation of heritability at the level of progeny (h²m, minimum of 0.50) for all traits was high and at the levels of individual plants (h²i, minimum 0.18) and within progenies (h²d, minimum of 0.14) was medium, indicating that the population can be improved by selection among and within progenies. Significant high genetic and phenotypic correlations among pairwise growth traits of the same age were detected as well as among those with different ages. Therefore, the direct selection, of a trait allows indirect selection of another. The results showed the potential of this progeny test to enhance a seed orchard by selection and seed production for commercial and environmental reforestation plans.

OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar associação entre tentativas de suicídio e uso de múltiplas drogas em pacientes com transtorno do humor bipolar. MÉTODO: Cento e sessenta e nove pacientes ambulatoriais com transtorno do humor bipolar, diagnosticados pela entrevista clínica estruturada do DSM-IV, foram incluídos. Dados demográficos e socioeconômicos, número de medicações em uso, história de tentativas de suicídio, número de anos sem diagnóstico, idade de início e comorbidades psiquiátricas foram avaliados através de um questionário estruturado e pelos critérios do DSM-IV. A principal medida de desfecho foi o número de medicamentos psicotrópicos usados correntemente. RESULTADOS: Cerca de metade dos pacientes (48,5%) apresentou uma história de tentativas de suicídio; 84% estavam usando mais do que uma medicação e 19% estavam usando mais do que três medicações. As combinações de fármacos mais utilizadas por estes pacientes foram: lítio + valproato (17%); lítio + antipsicóticos (10%); lítio + valproato + antipsicóticos (9%); e antidepressivos + outros fármacos (6%). O número de tentativas de suicídio mostrou-se associado ao uso de polifarmácia, na análise ajustada. CONCLUSÕES: Nossos resultados sugerem que a polifarmácia em pacientes bipolares pode estar relacionada a indicadores de gravidade, como número de tentativas de suicídio.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the association between suicide attempts and the use of multiple drugs in patients with bipolar disorder. METHOD: One hundred sixty-nine bipolar disorder outpatients diagnosed using the DSM-IV Structured Clinical Interview were included. Demographic and socioeconomic data, number of medications currently in use, history of suicide attempts, number of years undiagnosed, age of onset and current psychiatric co-morbidities were assessed using a structured questionnaire and DSM-IV criteria. The main outcome measure was the number of psychotropic drugs currently in use. RESULTS: Approximately half of all patients (48.5%) presented a history of suicide attempt; 84% were using more than one medication, and 19% were using more than three drugs. The most frequent combinations of drugs used by these patients were: lithium + valproate (17%); lithium + antipsychotics (10%); lithium + valproate + antipsychotics (9%); and antidepressants + any drug (6%). The number of suicide attempts was associated with the use of multiple drugs. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the notion that the use of combination therapy in bipolar disorder may be related to severity of the BD, such as number of suicide attempts.

OBJETIVO: A doença de Parkinson é uma enfermidade neurodegenerativa comum caracterizada por disfunção motora e níveis crescentes de dependência para atividades da vida diária, com conseqüente impacto sobre a qualidade de vida dos pacientes e seus cuidadores. MÉTODO: Foi realizado um estudo transversal avaliando qualidade de vida por meio do questionário WHOQOL-BREF em 21 pacientes com doença de Parkinson e seus respectivos cuidadores. RESULTADOS: Diferenças significativas entre pacientes e cuidadores foram encontradas nos domínios físico (p < 0,001) e psicológico (p = 0,002) do questionário WHOQOL-BREF. No grupo dos pacientes, houve uma significativa correlação inversa entre o domínio psicológico e duração da doença (p = 0,01), assim como entre domínio social e gravidade da doença (p = 0,001). Houve uma correlação positiva entre domínio físico e número de pessoas vivendo na mesma casa (p = 0,02). O único achado significativo no grupo dos cuidadores foi uma correlação inversa entre o domínio social e a idade do paciente (p = 0,04). CONCLUSÃO: Duração, gravidade e número de pessoas vivendo na mesma casa foram os fatores preditores mais importantes sobre a qualidade de vida dos pacientes com doença de Parkinson. A idade dos pacientes foi o único fator preditor encontrado sobre a qualidade de vida dos cuidadores. Outros questionários de aplicação curta devem ser validados para amostras brasileiras de pacientes com doença de Parkinson no sentido de complementar nossos achados.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor disabilities and increasing dependence on others for daily life activities with consequent impact on patients' and caregivers' quality of life. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was performed in which quality of life was assessed by the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire in 21 patients with Parkinson's disease and their respective caregivers. RESULTS: Significant differences between patients and caregivers were found in physical (p < 0.001) and psychological (p = 0.002) domains. In the Parkinson's disease group there was a significant inverse correlation between the psychological domain and duration of disease (p = 0.01), as well as between social domain and severity of disease (p = 0.001). There was a positive correlation between physical domain scores and number of people living in the same house (p = 0.02). The only significant finding in the group of caregivers was an inverse correlation between the social domain and the patients´ age (p = 0.04). CONCLUSION: Duration, severity of the disease and the number of people living in the same house were the most important predictors of quality of life of Parkinson's disease patients. The age of the patients was the only significant predictor found in the caregivers' quality of life. In order to complement our findings, further short-form questionnaires should be validated for Brazilian samples of Parkinson's disease.
