The goal of this paper is to show, by means of a thought experiment, and of the explication of the concept of artistic representation in the work of Arthur Danto, that there are important difficulties to provide an essentialist distinction among artistic and scientific representations. As a consequence of this, I will challenge the view according to which there is a need of providing a general theory of scientific representation. I will claim, though, that there is the need to focus on the normative side of scientific representation, that related to the use of representations in the context of scientific practice.

En este trabajo, partiendo de un experimento mental y de una exégesis del concepto de representación artística en la obra de Arthur Danto, mostraremos que hay serias dificultades para trazar una distinción de carácter esencialista entre representaciones artísticas y científicas. Negando la posibilidad de establecer dicha distinción y considerando la diferencia en cuestiones de uso y aplicación, cuestionaremos la necesidad de una teoría general de la representación científica y destacaremos, por el contrario, la importancia de la reflexión respecto de otros problemas asociados al uso de representaciones en la práctica científica, a saber, aquellos ligados con preguntas de carácter normativo.

The idea that experimentation is autonomous is widely shared amongst the New Experimentalists. However, it is not precisely stated how we should understand this thesis, or how to interpret it. In consequence, the aim of this paper is to explicate the different ways in which the autonomy of experiment thesis could be read, and to suggest, taking into account an analysis of the process by which an experimental result is constituted and exemplifying this process by the means of the study of an experiment, the measurement of the speed of light, how this thesis could be clarified and how to establish its scope and limits.

La tesis de la autonomía de la experimentación es una de las ideas aparentemente compartidas en el marco del proyecto epistemológico del nuevo experimentalismo. Sin embargo, ni el estatus de dicha tesis, ni su interpretación son objeto de consenso. Intentaremos en este trabajo explicitar las diferentes formas que adopta esta afirmación para posteriormente sugerir, partiendo de un análisis del proceso de constitución de los resultados experimentales e ilustrándolo con el estudio de un experimento, la medición de la velocidad de la luz, cómo puede precisarse y cómo determinar cuál es el alcance y el límite de la vida propia del experimento.

The aim of this article is to analyze and criticize the argument of the experimenter's regress proposed by Harry Collins in 1985. To this end, we begin by discussing the experiment that aimed to detect gravity waves performed by Joseph Weber during the 1970s. We continue with analysis and discussion of both the epistemological and ontological versions of Collin's argument. Then, finally, after giving an outline of a theory of experimental reproduction and an explication of the concept of replication, we propose two ways of avoiding the experimenter's regress.

El propósito de este trabajo es analizar y criticar el argumento del regreso del experimentador propuesto por Harry Collins en 1985. Para ello, comenzaremos comentando el experimento destinado a detectar ondas de gravedad que diseñó Joseph Weber en la década de 1970. Luego, continuaremos con el análisis y la discusión de las dos versiones del argumento de Collins: la versión epistemológica y la versión ontológica. Finalmente, luego de formular los lineamientos básicos para una teoría de la reproducción experimental, y una elucidación del concepto de replicación, propondremos dos formas de evitar el regreso del experimentador.
