Abstract The development of low-cost high quality surface finishing methods for silicon carbide (SiC) is an arduous task. Nowadays, the SiC mirrors manufacture involves extensive, complex, and costly finishing processes carried out on highly expensive ultra-precise machines. In this work, a cost-effective surface finishing method has been successfully developed, using conventional machines for the optical finishing of SiC. The results showed that the combination of ductile grinding and polishing in conventional low-cost machines allowed to obtain high-quality surface finish on SiC substrates with low roughness (4 - 10 nm Ra ) and optical figure in the range λ / 4 - λ / 8, at a reduced 32 hours total processing time.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Grain refinement in Al-Si alloys improves their mechanical properties. Research available in the literature shows the search for refinement efficiency through heterogeneous nucleation of the grain, involving the stoichiometric ratio between the alloy elements, the inoculant, and process parameters. In these surveys, there are divergences of information. However, this study does not aim to contradict this information but present an investigation made with the Al-4Nb-0.5B master alloy, where Nb >> B, used via sticks, with variations from 0 to 1 Wt.% of Nb and B according to a stoichiometric calculation added to the alloys cast with Al (7, 9, 12) Wt.% of Si and 1 Wt.% of Fe. The study also enabled an investigation into the morphology behavior of the β-Fe precipitates arising from Fe-critic in the alloy. Samples cast according to the TP1-2012 mold standard. The alloy microstructure analyzed was by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The small addition of Nb-B can efficiently and significantly refine the size of the primary α-Al grain and has caused changes in the morphology of Fe-rich intermetallic, which became very refined spheroidised, suggesting an improvement in the mechanical properties of the material.

Plasma nitriding of a solution annealed and aged 300 grade maraging steel was studied aiming to increase the creep resistance. The surface microhardness reached 1,140 HV, producing 50 µm layer composed of ε-Fe3N and γ'-Fe4N nitrides at the uppermost sample layer. The inner core remained unaltered presenting typical plate-like martensite microstructure of maraging steels with average microhardness of 604 HV. Surface RMS roughness in the nanometric scale increase from 52 nm to 71 nm. The continuous layer of iron nitrides seems to behave as a barrier for oxidation and for inward oxygen diffusion improving the creep resistance by reducing the steady-state creep rate (εs) in 52-65% when compared with the literature results. Dominant creep mechanism is controlled by dislocations climb. Fracture surfaces of specimens presented ductile failure consisting of equiaxed and bi-modal dimples in the fibrous zone surrounded by 45º shear lip. Nitrided sample presented a reduced ductility, associated to the hard surface layer.

Three welding processes for aluminum parts have been considered for the aircraft fabrication: riveting, friction stir welding (FSW) and laser beam welding (LBW). These processes have advantages and threats, which were analyzed in the present work focusing on T-pull and Hoop tensile properties. Concerning T-pull tests, LBW coupons presented higher ability to withstand the applied loads. This was due to the better distribution of loads when the strain is done to the stringer direction. In the case of the Hoop tests, which stress only the skin, the results obtained after FSW were notably higher in terms of ultimate tensile stress, yield stress and maximum strain. It was concluded that both LBW and FSW could replace riveting usually applied for commercial aircraft manufacturing.

Lipid and acute-phase protein alterations have been described in various infection diseases, and they have been recorded during the early stages of HIV infection. Lipid and acute-phase protein profiles also have been correlated with cellular immunological abnormalities. To document these correlations during HIV infection, we studied 75 HIV-infected patients and 26 HIV-negative controls. Patients were classified according to the criteria proposed by the Walter Reed Army Institute: as WR-1 (CD4 lymphocytes, 1154 ± 268/mm³), WR-2 (CD4, 793 ± 348/mm³) and WR3/4 (CD4, 287±75 mm³). Triglycerides, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentrations were measured by enzymatic methods. Immunoglobulins (IgA and IgG) and acute-phase proteins (haptoglobin, a1-acid glycoprotein, C-reactive protein and transferrin) were determined by immunonephelometry. Haptoglobin levels were significantly increased in HIV-positive patients and correlated with the progression of HIV-infection (control<WR1<WR2<WR3/4). WR-2 and WR-3/4 patients had lower total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and albumin concentrations, however, a1-acid glycoprotein and IgA levels were higher, when compared to HIV-negative controls. Elevated triglyceride levels (1.51±0.75 mmol/L) were found only in WR3/4 patients, when compared to the control individuals (1.05±0.04 mmol/L). No differences were found in transferrin and C-reactive protein concentrations among the studied groups. CD4+ lymphocyte counts were inversely correlated with triglycerides, IgA, a1-acid glycoprotein and haptoglobin, and they were positively correlated with albumin, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that increased haptoglobin and IgA levels were the best predictive variables of a decreasing CD4+ lymphocyte count. In conclusion, our data showed that: 1) a decrease in total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and albumin levels occurred earlier than hypertriglyceridemia in the course of HIV infection; 2) increased levels of haptoglobin occurred earlier than that of a1-acid glycoprotein and IgA; 3) haptoglobin and IgA were the best predictive variables of a decreasing CD4+ lymphocyte count. Decreases in HDL-cholesterol and albumin levels with increases in haptoglobin, a1-acid glycoprotein, IgA, and triglycerides levels are indications of disease progression in HIV-infected patients.
