Pie diabético y pandemia de la COVID-19: adaptación al uso de la Telemedicina por los especialistas de pie y tobillo de los Servicios de Traumatología de la Argentina

Resumen Introducción: La telemedicina fue la recomendación internacional durante la pandemia de COVID-19 para las consultas médicas de los pacientes con pie diabético. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar el empleo de la telemedicina como herramienta en pacientes con pie diabético, por parte de especialistas en pie y tobillo de la Argentina. Como objetivos secundarios se planteó valorar la satisfacción percibida por los profesionales con el uso de esta herramienta, evaluar qué estrategias se usaron para realizar la consulta médica remota y determinar la permanencia al retornar a la actividad asistencial habitual. Materiales y Métodos: Se enviaron tres encuestas a los socios de la Sociedad Argentina de Medicina y Cirugía de la Pierna y Pie, entre mayo 2020 y abril de 2022. Resultados: La función más valiosa de la consulta remota fue la prevención (75% de los encuestados), el seguimiento clínico (54,1%), el seguimiento posoperatorio (41,6%) y el diagnóstico (29,1%). El recurso más utilizado fue la conversación telefónica, seguida del envío de imágenes por mensajería instantánea. Solo el 37,5% utilizó las plataformas de historia clínica virtual. Conclusiones: Los recursos más utilizados para la consulta remota fueron la conversación telefónica, seguida del envío de imágenes por mensajería instantánea. El 33,4% estaba conforme con la consulta por telemedicina en mayo de 2020, mientras que, en julio, la conformidad ascendió al 46,7%. En abril de 2022, solo el 13% continuaba con las consultas remotas.
Abstract Introduction: Telemedicine was the recommendation of international societies during the COVID-19 pandemic for medical consultations in patients with diabetic foot (DF). The main aim of this work is to evaluate the use of telemedicine as a tool for the evaluation and follow-up of patients with DF by foot and ankle specialists in Argentina. As secondary objectives, we propose to assess the satisfaction perceived by the professionals with the use of this tool, to evaluate the specific strategies used to carry out the remote medical consultation, and to determine its permanence when returning to the usual care activity. Materials and Methods: Three surveys were sent to members of the Argentine Society of Medicine and Surgery of the Leg and Foot in May and July 2020 and April 2022. Results: According to 75% of respondents, the most valuable function of telemedicine was prevention, followed by monitoring of the clinical pathology (54.1%), postoperative follow-up (41.6%), and diagnosis (29.1%). The most commonly used resources for remote consultation were telephone conversations, followed by images sent by instant messaging. Only 37.5% used electronic health record platforms during 2020. Conclusions: The most commonly used resources for remote consultation were telephone conversations, followed by images sent by instant messaging. 33.4% of respondents were satisfied with telemedicine consultations in May 2020, while in July, satisfaction with this tool rose to 46.7%. In April 2022, only 13% of those surveyed in July 2020 continued offering remote consultations.

Abstract Simulating a bacterial-induced pulpitis environment in vitro may contribute to exploring mechanisms and bioactive molecules to counteract these adverse effects. Objective To investigate the chronic exposure of human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) aiming to establish a cell culture protocol to simulate the impaired odontogenic potential under pulpitis conditions. Methodology HDPCs were isolated from four healthy molars of different donors and seeded in culture plates in a growth medium. After 24 h, the medium was changed to an odontogenic differentiation medium (DM) supplemented or not with E. coli LPS (0 - control, 0.1, 1, or 10 µg/mL) (n=8). The medium was renewed every two days for up to seven days, then replaced with LPS-free DM for up to 21 days. The activation of NF-κB and F-actin expression were assessed (immunofluorescence) after one and seven days. On day 7, cells were evaluated for both the gene expression (RT-qPCR) of odontogenic markers (COL1A1, ALPL, DSPP, and DMP1) and cytokines (TNF, IL1B, IL8, and IL6) and the production of reactive nitrogen (Griess) and oxygen species (Carboxy-H2DCFDA). Cell viability (alamarBlue) was evaluated weekly, and mineralization was assessed (Alizarin Red) at 14 and 21 days. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and post-hoc tests (α=5%). Results After one and seven days of exposure to LPS, NF-κB was activated in a dose-dependent fashion. LPS at 1 and 10 µg/mL concentrations down-regulated the gene expression of odontogenic markers and up-regulated cytokines. LPS at 10 µg/mL increased both the production of reactive nitrogen and oxygen species. LPS decreased cell viability seven days after the end of exposure. LPS at 1 and 10 µg/mL decreased hDPCs mineralization in a dose-dependent fashion. Conclusion The exposure to 10 µg/mL LPS for seven days creates an inflammatory environment that is able to impair by more than half the odontogenic potential of HDPCs in vitro, simulating a pulpitis-like condition.

ABSTRACT Background: Direct sowing technique is considered a promising tool for reducing costs and increasing species diversity in restoration projects. However, several factors can limit its success, making it necessary for methodological adjustments to be made in order to maximize the emergence, establishment and initial growth of plants. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the use of fungus Trichoderma asperelloides and hydrogel in the enrichment direct sowing as a strategy to enrich the area in the initial restoration process. The forest species studied were Balfourodendron riedelianum, Cedrela fissilis, Luehea divaricata, Enterolobium contortisiliquum and Parapiptadenia rigida. The experiment was conducted in a factorial design testing absence or presence of the T. asperelloides and absence or presence of hydrogel. Two experiments were established: in the nursery, we evaluations of the emergence of the seedlings were carried out; in the field, we evaluated emergence, survival, height and stem diameter. Results: Under nursery conditions, inoculation and the use of hydrogel did not influence the emergence of species tested. Direct sowing proved to be a promising technique for the enrichment of young restoration plantations in subtropical regions with E. contortisiliquum, P. rigida and C. fissilis. B. riedelianum and L. divaricata seeds did not germinate in the field. Conclusion: The use of T. asperelloides is an efficient strategy to enhance the results of direct sowing, capable of providing higher rates of emergence for E. contortisiliqumm and P. rigida and maximizing the growth in height of E. contortisiliqumm. The antifungal potential of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by actinobacterial strains Streptomyces sp. (ACTB-77) and Amycolatopsis sp. (ACTB-290) from the rhizosphere of Caatinga plants against Colletotrichum musae was investigated. VOCs produced by these microorganisms (axenic and co-culture) were investigated using headspace-solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Although no exclusive VOC peaks were observed in the co-culture with ACTB-77, the same experiment involving ACTB-290 yielded five new peaks, including two identified alcohols, suggested as bioreductive products of the corresponding ketones by the fungus. Statistical analysis revealed that co-culture ACTB-77/C. musae has a closer similarity to the fungus than to the actinobacteria, while the co culture ACTB-290/C. musae showed closer similarity to the actinobacteria. These confirmed the more pronounced antifungal activity of the ACTB-290 strain, as observed in the fungus growth inhibition experiments. The antifungal activity of ACTB-290 was associated to its sulfur-containing metabolites, while linalool was suggested as responsible for the ACTB-77 activity.

RESUMEN: Eugenia uniflora es un árbol frutal de la familia Myrtaceae, nativo de Brasil, Argentina y Uruguay que tiene un alto potencial de uso en proyectos paisajísticos y ambientales, la industria alimentaria y farmacéutica. Sin embargo, todavía falta información sobre la producción de plantas de calidad. El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar el sustrato adecuado y sus características, en relación al régimen hídrico para la producción de plántulas de E. uniflora. El experimento se realizó en un diseño de bloques al azar, en un esquema factorial, con cuatro tipos de sustratos probados (S1: 100 % turba - sustrato comercial (SC), S2: 80 % SC + 20 % cáscara de arroz carbonizada (CAC), S3: 60 % SC + 40 % CAC, y S4: 40 % SC + 60 % CAC) y cinco regímenes hídricos (RH) (4, 8, 12, 16 y 20 mm dia-1). Se evaluó la altura, el diámetro del cuello, la materia seca y el índice de calidad de Dickson. Los factores influyeron en los atributos medidos de forma aislada. Las plantas cultivadas en S1 presentaron el mayor crecimiento y acumulación de materia seca, siendo los resultados 72 % y 41 % superiores a S3. Eugenia uniflora mostró un crecimiento y una calidad de plántulas superiores en plantas de semillero más pequeñas. El uso de sustrato a base de turba, combinado con el uso de 4 a 8 mm RH dia-1, proporciona un rápido desarrollo de plántulas de E. uniflora en vivero.
SUMMARY: Eugenia uniflora is a fruit tree of the Myrtaceae family, native to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay that has high potential for use in landscape and environmental projects, food and pharmaceutical industry. However, information on the production of quality seedlings is still scarce. The objective was to identify the appropriate substrate and its characteristics, in relation to the water regime for the production of E. uniflora seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in a factorial scheme, with four types of substrates being tested (S1: 100 % peat - commercial substrate (CS), S2: 80 % CS + 20 % Carbonized Rice Husk (CRH), S3: 60 % CS + 40 % CRH and S4: 40 % CS + 60 % CRH) and five water regimes (WR) (4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 mm day-1). Height, stem diameter, dry matter and Dickson's quality index were evaluated. Factors influenced the measured attributes in isolation. Seedlings grown in S1 showed the highest growth and accumulation of dry matter. Results are 72 % and 41 % higher than those shown by S3. Eugenia uniflora showed superior growth and quality of seedlings under smaller WR. The use of peat-based substrate, combined with the use of 4 to 8 mm WR day-1, provides rapid development of E. uniflora seedlings in a nursery.

Abstract Background Insects can be found in numerous diverse environments, being exposed to pathogenic organisms like fungi and bacteria. Once these pathogens cross insect physical barriers, the innate immune system operates through cellular and humoral responses. Antimicrobial peptides are small molecules produced by immune signaling cascades that develop an important and generalist role in insect defenses against a variety of microorganisms. In the present work, a cecropin B-like peptide (AgCecropB) sequence was identified in the velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis and cloned in a bacterial plasmid vector for further heterologous expression and antimicrobial tests. Methods AgCecropB sequence (without the signal peptide) was cloned in the plasmid vector pET-M30-MBP and expressed in the Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) expression host. Expression was induced with IPTG and a recombinant peptide was purified using two affinity chromatography steps with Histrap column. The purified peptide was submitted to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and structural analyses. Antimicrobial tests were performed using gram-positive (Bacillus thuringiensis) and gram-negative (Burkholderia kururiensis and E. coli) bacteria. Results AgCecropB was expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) at 28°C with IPTG 0.5 mM. The recombinant peptide was purified and enriched after purification steps. HRMS confirmed AgCrecropB molecular mass (4.6 kDa) and circular dichroism assay showed α-helix structure in the presence of SDS. AgCrecropB inhibited almost 50% of gram-positive B. thuringiensis bacteria growth. Conclusions The first cecropin B-like peptide was described in A. gemmatalis and a recombinant peptide was expressed using a bacterial platform. Data confirmed tertiary structure as predicted for the cecropin peptide family. AgCecropB was capable to inhibit B. thuringiensis growth in vitro.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Abstract In forest nurseries, one of the factors that change the growth and quality of seedlings is water supply, which has a direct influence on metabolic processes such as stomatal conductance and photochemical efficiency of photosystem II. This study aims to identify the influence of different watering regimes as well as the use of a water-retaining polymer on the initial growth and metabolic processes of Enterolobium contortisiliquum seedlings. The experimental design was in random blocks with a factorial scheme. Morphological attributes, as well as physiological and biochemical attributes were investigated. We verified that the performance of E. contortisiliquum seedlings depends on the watering regime provided to the plants; furthermore, up to 60 days after the application of the treatments, both the height and diameter of the collection and the leaf water potential were similar in the water regimes of 8 mm day-1 and 12 mm day-1.

Resumo Neste trabalho apresentamos um aparato de baixo custo, lúdico e de fácil acesso para experimentação na área de óptica geométrica. A simplicidade da montagem e a facilidade do manuseio favorecem a aplicação deste projeto, que se propõe a construir lentes esféricas com gelatina comestível. Com o auxilio de gabaritos de papel, feitos no formato desejado, foi possível cortar a gelatina de modo que ela ficasse no formato de uma lente esférica. Utilizando esses materiais, medimos o índice de refração da gelatina a partir da Lei de Snell e medimos a distância focal de uma lente convergente. Também foi possível realizar uma simulação do funcionamento do cristalino presente no olho humano. Ao esticar e comprimir a lente de gelatina é possível observar a alteração da posição do seu foco, ilustrando o mecanismo de acomodação que ocorre em nossos olhos.
Abstract We describe a low-cost and playful apparatus for geometrical optics experiments that uses everyday materials. The experimental setup is simple and easy to manipulate, and it entails making spherical lenses with Jell-O. Using paper templates, created in the desired shape, we cut the Jell-O in the format of a spherical lens. Using these materials, we measured the refraction index of the lenses using Snell's Law and measured the focal distance of a convergent Jell-O lens. Using a Jell-O lens, we simulated how the crystalline lens in the human eye works. By stretching and compressing the Jell-O lens, it is possible to observe a change in the focal position, illustrating the mechanism of accommodation that occurs in the human eye.

ABSTRACT Thirteen natural products derivatives of hydroxyl amide class, three described for the first time, were synthesized by reaction of three indole acids and 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid with six different amino alcohols in the presence of triphenylphosphine and N-bromosuccinimide. The derivatives were tested against the Gram (+) bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, Gram (-) Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, besides the yeast Candida albicans. One of the compounds (7) was selectively active against C. albicans (91.3 ± 0.49% inhibition) showing a great potential as a new drug lead, since it was more active than the positive control, miconazole (88.7 ± 2.41% inhibition). Regarding bacterial inhibition, compounds demonstrated mild activity, but inhibition of compounds 9, 10 and 13 towards E. coli is of interest since it is difficult to find drugs selectively active against Gram (-) bacteria. Most of the compounds were very active in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition assay. Compound 7 was again the most active (93.2 ± 4.47%), being more potent than the control galantamine (90.3 ± 0.45%). The most active gallic acid derivatives, compounds 3, 7 and 8 have in common, besides gallic acid skeleton, a (CH2)2OH group, which may be one of the structural requirements for AChE inhibition.

Euterpe edulis effects on cardiac and renal tissues of Wistar rats fed with cafeteria diet

Introduction: This study's objective was to evaluate the antioxidant and toxic effects of E. edulis on cardiac and renal tissues of Wistar rats fed with cafeteria diet. Methods: Catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in cardiac muscle and renal tissue of 60 animals, which were randomly assigned for 10 equal groups. Half of the rats were fed with cafeteria diet and the other half with commercial chow, combined or not to E. edulis lyophilized extract, E. edulis deffated lyophilized extract or E. edulis oil. Data were evaluated using ANOVA, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test. Results: Data showed a significant increase of CAT activity in cardiac tissue of animals from the groups fed with cafeteria diet associated to E. edulis lyophilized extract at 5%, E. edulis lyophilized extract at 10% and E. edulis deffated lyophilized extract at 10%. In addition, the same result was found in animals from the groups fed with commercial chow and commercial chow combined with E. edulis lyophilized extract at 10% in comparison to the group fed exclusively with cafeteria diet. GST and SOD enzyme activity showed significant increase in the heart tissue of animals nourished with commercial chow when compared to the groups fed with cafeteria diet. On the other hand, there were no significant differences enzymatic levels in renal tissues. Conclusion: The oil and the extract of E. edulis had an important role promoting an increase of antioxidant enzymes levels in cardiac muscle, which prevent the oxidative damage resulting from the cafeteria diet in Wistar rats. There were no evidenced signs of lipid peroxidation in renal or in cardiac tissue of the animals studied, indicating that the E. edulis use did not promote any increase in malondialdehyde cytotoxic products formation. This show that both E. edulis oil and extracts evaluated in this study were well tolerated in the studied doses.
Introducción: el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar los efectos antioxidantes y tóxicos de E. edulis en los tejidos cardiacos y renales de ratas Wistar alimentadas con dieta de cafetería. Métodos: catalasa (CAT), glutatión-S-transferasa (GST), superóxido dismutasa (SOD) y malondialdehído (MDA) se midieron en el músculo cardiaco y el tejido renal de 60 animales, que fueron asignados aleatoriamente para 10 grupos iguales. La mitad de las ratas fueron alimentadas con dieta de cafetería y la otra mitad con ración comercial, combinados o no con E. edulis extracto liofilizado, E. edulis GMD obtenidas de extracto liofilizado o aceite de E. edulis. Los datos se evaluaron mediante ANOVA, seguido por el test de Student-Newman-Keuls. Resultados: los datos mostraron un aumento significativo de la actividad de CAT en el tejido cardiaco de los animales de los grupos alimentados con dieta de cafetería asociada a E. edulis extracto liofilizado en un 5%, E. edulis extracto liofilizado en un 10% y E. edulis GMD obtenidas de extracto liofilizado de 10%. Además, el mismo resultado se encuentra en los animales de los grupos alimentados con chow chow comercial y comercial combinado con extracto liofilizado E. edulis en 10% en comparación con el grupo alimentado exclusivamente con dieta de cafetería. La actividad de GST y la enzima SOD mostró un aumento significativo en el tejido del corazón de los animales alimentados con pienso comercial en comparación con los grupos alimentados con dieta de cafetería. Por otro lado, se observaron diferencias significativas en los niveles enzimáticos en los tejidos renales. Conclusión: el aceite y el extracto de E. edulis tuvieron un papel importante al promover un aumento de los niveles de enzimas antioxidantes en el músculo cardiaco, que previenen el daño oxidativo resultante de la dieta de cafetería en ratas Wistar. Los signos de la peroxidación lipídica evidenciados en los riñones o en el tejido cardiaco de los animales estudiados indican que el uso de E. edulis no promovió ningún aumento en la formación de productos citotóxicos malondialdehído, un marcador reconocido de la acción de los radicales libres.

Quality of tuberculosis care at different levels of health care in Brazil in 2013

ABSTRACT Objective To assess 1) the burden and socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of tuberculosis (TB) cases, and 2) the quality of TB care provided to patients who entered and remained within each health care service level (primary, secondary, or tertiary) and those who moved from one level to another, using process and results indicators. Methods This cross-sectional operational research study assessed new smear-positive pulmonary TB cases diagnosed in Brazilian state capitals in 2013 using TB program records and the TB surveillance system. Quality of care was assessed based on process and results indicators including HIV screening, TB contact screening, Directly Observed Treatment (DOT), sputum smear microscopy monitoring, and treatment outcomes. Results There were 12 977 new smear-positive TB cases reported. Of these, 7 964 (61.4%) cases were diagnosed and treated at the primary care level, 1 195 (9.2%) at the secondary level, 1 521 (11.7%) at the tertiary level, and 2 296 (17.7%) at more than one level, with 65% of the latter group moved from the tertiary level to the primary level. The proportion of cases tested for HIV was significantly higher in patients receiving care at the primary level compared to those receiving care at the secondary level (prevalence ratio (PR): 1.17; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07–1.28) and those attending more than one service level. Patients attending the tertiary health care level had a 122% higher PR for not doing DOT (“DOT not done”) compared to patients at the primary level (PR: 2.22; CI: 2.12–2.32). When the two levels were compared, the prevalence for an unfavorable outcome (lost to follow-up, death from TB, death with TB, transferred out, or not evaluated) was higher at the tertiary health care level. Conclusions Primary health services are successfully incorporating the management of new smear-positive TB cases. Primary health care obtained better operational indicators than secondary or tertiary levels.
RESUMEN Objetivo Evaluar 1) la carga de morbilidad por tuberculosis y las características sociodemográficas y clínicas de los pacientes y 2) la calidad de la atención de la tuberculosis que se presta a los pacientes que acuden y permanecen en cada nivel de los servicios de salud (primario, secundario o terciario) y a los pacientes que se transfirieron a otro nivel, mediante el análisis de los indicadores de funcionamiento de los procesos y los indicadores de resultados. Métodos En el presente estudio transversal de investigación operativa se analizaron los casos nuevos de tuberculosis pulmonar con baciloscopia positiva que se diagnosticaron en las capitales estatales del Brasil en el 2013, a partir de los registros del programa contra la tuberculosis y los datos del sistema de vigilancia de la enfermedad. Se evaluó la calidad de la atención en función de los indicadores de funcionamiento y los indicadores de resultados como la detección sistemática de la infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH), el tamizaje de los contactos de casos de tuberculosis, el tratamiento estrictamente supervisado (conocido como DOT, por su sigla en inglés), la supervisión de la baciloscopia del esputo y los desenlaces terapéuticos. Resultados Se notificaron 12 977 casos nuevos de tuberculosis con baciloscopia positiva. De los casos notificados, 7 964 (61,4%) se diagnosticaron y recibieron tratamiento en el nivel de atención primaria, 1 195 (9,2%) en el nivel secundario, 1 521 (11,7%) en el nivel terciario y 2 296 pacientes (17,7%) recibieron asistencia en servicios de varios niveles de atención; de este último grupo, el 65% pasó del nivel terciario al nivel primario de atención. La proporción de casos en los cuales se practicó la detección de la infección por el VIH fue significativamente mayor en los pacientes que acudieron al nivel primario de atención, al compararlos con los que recibieron atención en el nivel secundario (razón de prevalencia, [RP]: 1,17; intervalo de confianza [IC] de 95%: de 1,07 a 1,28) y los pacientes tratados en servicios de varios niveles de atención. En los pacientes que acudieron al nivel terciario de atención de salud, la razón de prevalencia de no seguir el DOT fue 122% más alta que en los pacientes atendidos en el nivel primario (RP: 2,22; IC de 95%: de 2,12 a 2,32). Cuando se compararon ambos niveles, la prevalencia de un resultado desfavorable (pérdida durante el seguimiento, defunción por tuberculosis, defunción con tuberculosis, transferido a otro centro o no evaluado) fue más alta en el nivel terciario de atención sanitaria. Conclusiones Los servicios de atención primaria de salud han incorporado de manera eficaz el tratamiento de los casos nuevos de tuberculosis con baciloscopia positiva. Los indicadores operativos de la atención primaria de salud fueron mejores que los indicadores de la atención de nivel secundario o terciario.

Resumo Até 2010, o conhecimento sobre a diversidade de fungos do Brasil estava registrado em publicações esparsas de taxonomia e ecologia e em algumas poucas listas de espécies. Com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil, e a disponibilização da lista online, tem sido possível agregar o conhecimento disperso. A versão ora apresentada acrescenta 2.111 nomes de espécies aos 3.608 listados em 2010. São citadas 5.719 espécies de fungos distribuídas em 1.246 gêneros, 102 ordens e 13 divisões, consistindo em considerável aumento em relação a 2010, quando estavam registrados 924 gêneros e 78 ordens. Predominam os Basidiomycota (2.741 espécies, em 22 ordens) e Ascomycota (1.881 espécies, em 41 ordens). A Mata Atlântica possui a maior quantidade de registros, com 3.017 espécies, seguido pela Amazonia (1.050), Caatinga (999), Cerrado (638) e Pampa e Pantanal com 84 e 35 espécies, respectivamente. A região Nordeste tem a maior riqueza (2.617 especies), seguida pelo Sudeste (2.252), Sul (1.995), Norte (1.301) e Centro Oeste (488 espécies). Em relação aos Estados da Federação, São Paulo (1.846 espécies), Pernambuco (1.611) e Rio Grande do Sul (1.377) são os mais diversos.
Abstract Knowledge about the Brazilian fungal diversity was, until 2010, recorded in few taxonomy and ecology publications, as well as in a handful of species lists. With the publication of the Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil and the continued availability of an online list, it has been possible to aggregate this dispersed knowledge. The version presented here adds 2,111 species names to the 3,608 listed in 2010. A total of 5,719 species of fungi distributed in 1,246 genera, 102 orders and 13 phyla represents a considerable increase over the last five years, when only 924 genera and 78 orders were registered. Basidiomycota (2,741 species in 22 orders) and Ascomycota (1,881 species in 41 orders) predominate over other groups. The Atlantic Rainforest has the largest number of records, with 3,017 species, followed by Amazon Rainforest (1,050), Caatinga (999), Cerrado (638) and Pampa and Pantanal with 84 and 35 species, respectively. The Northeast region has the greatest richness (2,617 species), followed by Southeast (2,252), South (1,995), North (1,301) and Central-West (488 species). Regarding the States of the Federation, São Paulo with 1,846 species, Pernambuco with 1,611 and Rio Grande do Sul with 1,377 species are the most diverse.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
