ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the damages caused by Diceraeus (=Dichelops) melacanthus in maize plants subjected to bioinoculation with or without imidacloprid seed treatment. In this study, five different combinations of bioinoculants and imidacloprid seed treatment were applied to maize seeds in a completely randomized design. The bioinoculants used were Azospirillum brasilense and Bradyrhizobium japonicum. From emergence, the plants were subjected to infestation with the stink bug D. melacanthus (one stink bug/plant), with permanence up to 21 days after emergence. After this period, the phytotechnical parameters (shoot and root) of the corn plants were evaluated. In general, plant height was higher when imidacloprid was applied, suggesting compatibility with bioinoculants. The chlorophyll a content was higher when bioinoculants were applied, regardless of whether imidacloprid was present. Finally, the results indicate that the bacteria A. brasilense and B. japonicum do not induce resistance to the level of D. melacanthus infestation used in the present study. Therefore, these bacteria can be used in combination with imidacloprid, allowing for greater plant height, higher chlorophyll a content, and reduced damage caused by D. melacanthus.

RESUMO: A lagarta-do-cartucho Spodoptera frugiperda Smith, 1797 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) é uma praga polífaga que ocasiona danos em diversos cultivos, e o conhecimento do seu espectro de hospedeiros é essencial para o estabelecimento de estratégias de manejo e controle. Assim, o presente estudo registra pela primeira vez a ocorrência de S. frugiperda em videiras brasileiras. Desse modo, recomenda-se a realização de estudos adicionais em laboratório para compreender os aspectos biológicos e os danos as diferentes estruturas (vegetativas e uvas). Essa informação será essencial para avaliar o potencial de dano de S. frugiperda se alimentando de videiras.

ABSTRACT: The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda Smith, 1797 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous pest that causes losses in several crops. The knowledge of host plants is essential for establishing management and control strategies. The present study reported the first occurrence of S. frugiperda in Brazilian grapevines. It is recommended that further studies should be carried out in the laboratory to understand the biological aspects of the damage to different structures (leaves and grapes). This information will be essential to assess the potential of S. frugiperda damage to vines.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a abundância de dolicopodideos em diferentes espécies de adubos verdes. Para isso, foram utilizados os seguintes tratamentos: crotalária (Crotalaria spectabilis), feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata), girassol (Helianthus annuus), mamona (Ricinus communis) e trigo mourisco (Fagopyrum esculentum). A pesquisa foi realizada em campo, durante os anos 2012/2013 (novembro/dezembro a março) e 2013/2014 (outubro/novembro a fevereiro). As avaliações foram realizadas semanalmente, e a abundância de Dolichopodidae foi monitorada com uso de rede de varredura e instalação de armadilhas Moericke. Adicionalmente, foi quantificada a infestação de insetos fitófagos (Thysanoptera: Thripidae; Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae e Hemiptera: Aphididae), para avaliar possível relação de denso-dependência. No total, foram capturados 13987 dolicopodídeos (96,5% em armadilha Moericke), representados pela espécie Condylostylus erectus Becker, 1922 (Diptera: Dolichopodidae). De modo geral, a maior abundância de C. erectus foi observada em trigo mourisco e feijão-caupi. Em relação aos fitófagos, foram quantificados 48371 indivíduos (Thripidae (77,5%), Aleyrodidae (20,2%) e Aphididae (2,5%)), e não foi evidenciada uma consistente correlação populacional com C. erectus. Desse modo, esses resultados sugerem que o trigo mourisco e o feijão-caupi disponibilizam recursos alimentares de interesse ao predador, conforme discutido no trabalho. Por fim, a semeadura de trigo mourisco e feijão-caupi são opções para incrementar a abundância do predador C. erectus no agroecossistema.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the Dolichopodidae abundance in different cover crop species. For this, the following species were used in treatments: Crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), castor bean (Ricinus communis) and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). The survey was carried out in a field during two seasons 2012/2013 (November/December to March) and 2013/2014 (October/November to February). The Dolichopodidae abundance were evaluated weekly using a sweep net and Moericke traps. In addition, the phytophagous abundance (Thysanoptera: Thripidae; Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae and Hemiptera: Aphididae) was quantified, to allow for an inference about density-dependence. In total, 13,987 long-legged flies (96.5% in Moericke traps) were captured, represented only by the species Condylostylus erectus Becker, 1922 (Diptera: Dolichopodidae). In general, the higher abundance of C. erectus was observed in buckwheat and cowpea. Regarding the phytophagous species, 48,371 individuals [Thripidae (77.5%), Aleyrodidae (20.2%), and Aphididae (2.5%)] were quantified and a clear correlation with the C. erectus population was not evidenced. Thus, these results suggested that buckwheat and cowpea make resources available to long-legged flies, as discussed in our research. Finally, the buckwheat and cowpea sowing are options to increase the abundance of C. erectus predator populations in agroecosystems.

RESUMO A lagarta Chloridea (Heliothis) virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) tem sido registrada recentemente em lavouras de milho. Apesar disso, não existem informações sobre a biologia dessa espécie alimentando-se de espigas de milho. Adicionalmente, a relação entre os hábitos alimentares da lagarta-do-fumo e a temperatura é importante para a projeção da adaptação da praga em lavouras de milho, em diferentes épocas e regiões. Objetivou-se investigar o desenvolvimento de C. virescens em espigas de milho, em condições controladas de laboratório, sob três temperaturas (25 ± 1 ºC, 28 ± 1 ºC e 31 ± 1 ºC). Embora os insetos tenham atingido a fase adulta em todas as temperaturas, a fase larval foi reduzida a 31 ± 1 ºC, resultando em menor consumo de grãos. Por outro lado, parâmetros biológicos como viabilidade larval e pupal, peso de pupa e razão sexual não foram influenciados pela temperatura. Durante a fase adulta, a fecundidade foi similar para todas as temperaturas; no entanto, a viabilidade de ovos foi nula. A temperatura adequada para o desenvolvimento de C. virescens foi entre 25 ± 1 ºC e 28 ± 1 ºC. A temperatura de 31 ± 1 ºC afeta o desenvolvimento dos ovos, não permitindo uma nova geração da praga.

ABSTRACT The tobacco budworm Chloridea (Heliothis) virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) has been recently reported in corn crops. However, there is no information regarding the biology of this species feeding on corn cobs. Additionally, the relationship between temperature and tobacco budworm feeding habits is important to project the adaptation of the insect in corn crops at different times and regions. This study aimed to investigate the development of C. virescens feeding on corn cobs, under controlled laboratory conditions, at three temperatures (25 ± 1 ºC, 28 ± 1 ºC and 31 ± 1 ºC). Although adult budworms were observed at all temperatures, the larval development period was reduced at 31 ± 1 ºC, resulting in a lower grain consumption. On the other hand, biological parameters such as larval and pupal viability, pupal weight and sex ratio did not vary with temperature. During the adult stage, a similar fecundity was recorded at all temperatures; however, the egg viability was zero. The optimal temperature for the C. virescens development was between 25 ± 1 ºC and 28 ± 1 ºC. The temperature of 31 ± 1 ºC affects the eggs development, preventing the next generation of tobacco budworms.

RESUMO Novos genótipos híbridos de bananeira têm sido inseridos no mercado brasileiro, embora ainda não existam informações consistentes sobre seus possíveis impactos em relação às pragas da cultura. O moleque-da-bananeira (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) é fortemente atraído pelos voláteis do rizoma da bananeira e acredita-se que sua atração pelos genótipos híbridos seja diferente da observada para variedades. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a resposta olfativa do moleque-da-bananeira, Cosmopolites sordidus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) a 20 genótipos de bananeira, em laboratório. De acordo com a semelhança genética e comercial dos genótipos, foram estabelecidos quatro agrupamentos: 1) Cavendish; 2) Prata; 3) Maçã/Conquista e 4) Ouro/Terra/Caipira/Figo. No bioensaio 1, a atração do moleque-da-bananeira foi avaliada entre os genótipos do mesmo agrupamento e, no bioensaio 2, os genótipos previamente selecionados foram comparados entre si. Em ambos os bioensaios, a testemunha foi representada pela ausência do rizoma. O estudo foi repetido com insetos e rizomas coletados em abril (primeira época) e julho (segunda época) do ano agrícola de 2011. Na primeira época, os genótipos selecionados foram: Nanicão (AAA); FHIA 18 (AAAB); Princesa (AAAB); Ouro (AA) e Prata anã (AAB) (bioensaio 1). Na segunda época, os genótipos selecionados foram FHIA 17 (AAAA), PA 9401 (AAAB), Thap Maeo (AAB), além de Nanicão e Ouro (bioensaio 1). No geral, apenas as variedades Nanicão (AAA) e Ouro (AA) foram mais atrativas que a testemunha (primeira e segunda épocas, respectivamente) (bioensaio 2). No entanto, não foi observada clara influência do genótipo sobre a resposta olfativa de C. sordidus, indicando que os híbridos de bananeira apresentam atratividade semelhante à das variedades.

ABSTRACT New banana plant hybrids have been cultivated in the Brazilian fields, although there is no consistent information about the possible impacts on banana pests. The banana root weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is strongly drawn to the volatile rhizome of banana, and it is believed that its attractiveness for hybrid genotypes is different than that observed on banana plant varieties. This study aimed to evaluate the olfactory response of banana root weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), to 20 banana genotypes in laboratory. According to the genetic and commercial similarity of plants, the genotypes were divided into four groups: 1) Cavendish; 2) Prata; 3) Maçã/Conquista, e 4) Ouro/Terra/Caipira/Figo. In the bioassay 1, the attractiveness of the banana root weevil was evaluated for genotypes of the same group. In bioassay 2, the pre-selected genotypes were compared among themselves. The study was replicated with insects and rhizomes in April (first season) and July (second season) of 2011 agricultural year. In the first season, the selected genotypes were Nanicão (AAA), FHIA 18 (AAAB), Princesa (AAAB), Ouro (AA), and Prata anã (AAB) (bioassay 1). In the second season, the selected genotypes were FHIA 17 (AAAA), PA 9401 (AAAB), and Thap Maeo (AAB), besides Nanicão and Ouro (bioassay 1). In both bioassays, the control was represented by absence of rizome. Overall, only Nanicão (AAA) and Ouro (AA) genotypes were more attractive than the control (in the first and second seasons, respectively) (bioassay 2). Nevertheless, we observed no clear influence of genotypes on olfactory response of C. sordidus, indicating that banana plants hybrids and varieties have similar attractiveness to banana root weevil.

RESUMO: A infestação de bicho-mineiro e a sua predação por vespas foram avaliadas em lavouras comerciais de café orgânico sombreadas com leucena ou consorciadas com feijão guandu. As lavouras situadas na região Norte do Paraná foram avaliadas a cada duas semanas de junho de 2011 a dezembro de 2012. Determinou-se o percentual de folhas infestadas, o número de minas por folha e a porcentagem de predação por vespas (indicada pela laceração das minas). Menor infestação do Bicho-mineiro e o menor número de minas por folha foi verificada na lavoura consorciada com feijão guandu (28,4% e 0,3; respectivamente) em relação a lavoura sombreada com leucina (48,1% e 0,8; respectivamente). Maior predação por vespas foi verificada na lavoura sombreada (27,2%) em relação a lavoura consorciada (13,18%). Sugestões de novas pesquisas e para o manejo do bicho-mineiro em lavouras de café são apresentadas.

ABSTRACT: The infestation of coffee leaf miner and its predation by wasps were assessed in commercial organic coffee plantings shaded with leucaena or intercropped with pigeon pea. Plantings in northern Paraná were assessed every two weeks from June 2011 to December 2012. The percent of infested leaves, number of mines per leaf and the percent of predation by wasps (indicated by lacerations) were determined. Fewer coffee leaf miners and fewer mines per leaf were found in pigeon pea intercropped plantings (28.4% and 0.3, respectively) than in shaded plantings with leucaena (48.1% and 0.8, respectively). More predation by wasps was found in the shaded (27.2%) than in the intercropped (13.2%) plantings. Suggestions for new studies are presented along with suggestions for managing the leaf miner in coffee plantings.

ABSTRACT We evaluated the influence of host preference, mating, and release density on Telenomus remus (Nixon, 1937) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) parasitizing eggs of Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). First, we tested host preference of T. remus (free choice test) offered a choice between eggs of Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton, 1865) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and S. frugiperda. Parasitism capacity and host preference (S. frugiperda) of T. remus reared on either of the two hosts did not differ. Secondly, we evaluated the influence of mating behavior of T. remus females on its parasitism. Only the offspring sex ratio differed between treatments, indicating that the species reproduces by parthenogenesis of the arrhenotoky type. Finally, we evaluated the influence of release density on T. remus parasitism. This was tested by releasing different numbers of the parasitoid per S. frugiperda egg using T. remus reared for different numbers of generations on C. cephalonica eggs. The regression analysis between percentage of parasitism and density of released T. remus females showed a quadratic effect for all tested parasitoid generations (F35, F40, and F45) with maximum parasitism from 65.07% to 71.69%. Our results allow the conclusion that (a) T. remus prefers S. frugiperda eggs, regardless of the host on which this parasitoid was reared, showing no preimaginal conditioning; (b) Mating does not affect the number of eggs parasitized by T. remus or the development of its offspring; and (c) The optimal T. remus release density when reared on C. cephalonica is between 0.133 and 0.150 females/S. frugiperda.

RESUMO: Neste estudo, objetivamos investigar a infestação de Cosmopolites sordidus ( Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae ) em diferentes genótipos de bananeira, em um pomar comercial de bananeira, com idade de 30 meses. Para isso, comparou-se a infestação da broca-da-rizoma em 20 genótipos de bananeira, sendo cinco variedades e quinze híbridos. No geral, foi observado que 94,17% da infestação da praga ocorreu na região do córtex do rizoma, e apenas 5,83% das plantas apresentaram infestação no cilindro central. Os materiais menos sensíveis à infestação foram as variedades Prata Anã (AAB) e Pacovan (AAB), nas quais não foi registrada ocorrência da praga. Entre os genótipos híbridos, de forma geral, os materiais PV 9401 e BRS FHIA 18 foram os que apresentaram sensibilidade intermediária, enquanto os híbridos BRS Tropical (AAAB), PA 9401 (AAAB), BRS Vitoria (AAAB), YB-4203 (AAAB) e Bucaneiro (AAAA) foram os mais sensíveis ao ataque da broca-do-rizoma. Este estudo demonstra que a infestação da broca-do-rizoma varia de acordo com o genótipo, e a seleção de materiais menos suscetíveis auxilia na redução da infestação de C. sordidus.

ABSTRACT: In this study, we aimed to investigate Cosmopolites sordidus (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae ) infestation among different banana genotypes in a commercial banana orchard over the course of 30 months. Banana root borer infestation was compared in 20 banana genotypes, including five varieties and 15 hybrids. Overall, we observed that 94.17% of pest infestation cases occurred in the cortex region, and only 5.83% occurred in the central cylinder. Genotypes least sensitive to infestation were the Prata Anã (AAB) and Pacovan (AAB) varieties, where no damage was recorded. Among the hybrid genotypes, PV 9401 and BRS Fhia 18 showed intermediate levels of sensitivity, while BRS Tropical hybrids (AAAB), PA 9401 (AAAB), BRS Vitoria (AAAB), YB 4203 (AAAB), and Bucaneiro (AAAA) were the most sensitive to attack by banana root borer. This study demonstrated that the infestation of the banana root borer varies according banana plant genotype, and the utilization of less susceptible genotypes could reduce infestation rates of C. sordidus.

RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o período de desenvolvimento larval, sobrevivência larval (%), consumo de alimento e biomassa pupalde Spodoptera eridania e Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae ), alimentadas com grãos verdes de milho Bt que expressam as proteínas Cry1F e Cry1F + Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab2). As larvas de Spodoptera spp. alimentadas com milho Bt sobreviveram por até dois dias, registrando-se 100% de mortalidade. A espécie S. eridania alimentada com grãos de milho não Bt apresentou um maior desenvolvimento larval (21,6 dias) do que S. frugiperda (18,4 dias), e menor viabilidade larval (56,4% e 80,2% para S. eridania e S. frugiperda respectivamente). Uma maior taxa de consumo de grãos foi observada para S. eridania (5,4g) do que para S. frugiperda (3,9g). Em síntese, este estudo comprova que as toxinas Cry1F e Cry1F + Cry1A.105 Cry2Ab2 expressas em grãos imaturos de milho contribuem na proteção das espigas de milho contra S. frugiperda e a praga não-alvo S. eridania , entretanto, é importante monitorar as lavouras cultivadas com milho não Bt, devido o potencial de ambas as espécies em ocasionar danos nas espigas da planta.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate extent of larval period, larval survival (%), food consumption, and pupal biomass of Spodoptera eridania and Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae ) fed on fresh ears of field corn expressing Bt proteins (Cry1F and Cry1F+Cry1A.105+Cry2Ab2). Larvae of Spodoptera spp. survived less than two days when they consumed Bt corncobs and showed 100% mortality. Spodoptera eridania reared on non-Bt corn cobs showed higher larval development (21.6 days) than S. frugiperda (18.4 days) and lower viability (56.4% and 80.2% for S. eridania and S. frugiperda , respectively). A higher amount of corn grains was consumed by S. eridania (5.4g) than by S. frugiperda (3.9g). In summary, this study demonstrated that the toxins Cry1F and Cry1F + Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab2 expressed in fresh corn cobs contributed to protect ears of corn against S. frugiperda and the non-target pest S. eridania . However, itis important to monitor non-Bt cornfields because of the potential of both species to cause damage to ear sof corn.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the development and reproduction of the black armyworm, Spodoptera cosmioides when larvae fed on leaves of Bt-corn hybrids, expressing a single Cry1F and also Cry1F, Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 in pyramided corn and their non-Bt-isoline (hybrid 2B688), as well as on leaves of two soybean isolines expressing the Cry1Ac protein and its non-Bt isoline (A5547-227). We also assessed the effect of these Bt and non-Bt plants on the leaf consumption rate of S. cosmioides larvae. This pest was unable to develop when fed on any of the corn isolines (Bt and non-Bt). When both 1st and 3rd instar larvae were fed on corn leaf, mortality was 100% in both Bt and non-Bt corn. In contrast, when corn leaves were offered to 5th instar larvae, there were survivors. Defoliation and leaf consumption was higher with non-Bt corn than with both of the Bt corn isolines. There was no negative effect of Bt soybean leaves on the development and reproduction of S. cosmioides with respect to all evaluated parameters. Our study indicates that both Bt and non-Bt corn adversely affect the development of S. cosmioides while Bt soybean did not affect its biology, suggesting that this lepidopteran has major potential to become an important pest in Bt soybean crops.

En los paisajes agrícolas, los hábitats no cultivados tales como fragmentos forestales pueden desempeñar una importante función para los enemigos naturales, pero también pueden favorecer a algunas plagas. Sin embargo, hay pocos estudios en regiones neotropicales. Así, el objetivo de este estudio fue investigar el parasitoidismo en áfidos a dos distancias (25 y 525 m) desde fragmentos forestales adyacentes a un cultivo de trigo. La investigación fue desarrollada en cuatro cultivos de trigo ubicados en el norte del Estado de Paraná, Brasil durante la temporada agrícola de 2009. En total fueron recolectados 8392 áfidos pertenecientes a dos especies, de los cuales 589 estaban parasitados por seis especies de parasitoides. En las cuatro áreas de estudio, la abundancia de áfidos y el parasitismo no mostraron una clara relación con la distancia desde los fragmentos forestales (25 y 525 m). Además se observó una relación inversa denso dependiente entre los áfidos y su parasitoidismo. En resumen, este estudio no respalda la hipótesis de mayor parasitismo de áfidos en las cercanías de los fragmentos forestales, sin embargo es el primer estudio en la región Neotropical, siendo necesario efectuar más investigación para mejorar la comprensión de esta interacción tritrófica.

In agricultural landscapes, non-crop habitats, such as forest fragments, may not only play an important role for natural enemies, but may also favor some pests. However, there is a lack of studies in Neotropical regions about these interactions. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate aphid parasitoidism at two distances (25 m and 525 m) from edges of forest fragments adjacent to wheat crops. This research was carried out in four wheat fields in the north of the Parana state, Brazil, during the planting season of 2009. In total, 8,392 aphids were counted, representing two species. There were 589 total aphid-parasitized ("mummies"), represented by six species. In all four areas, aphid abundance and parasitoidism showed no clear relationship to distance from forest fragments (25 m and 525 m). In addition, inverse density dependence between aphids and parasitoidism was observed. In summary, this study does not support the hypothesis of higher parasitoidism of aphids near edges of forest fragments. However, this is the first study in the Neotropical region and more research must be done to better understand this tritrophic interaction.

RESUMO O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a influência da distância do fragmento de mata nativa sobre a abundância de sirfídeos afidófagos em lavoura de trigo. O experimento foi conduzido em quatro lavouras comerciais, localizadas no Norte do estado do Paraná, durante a safra 2009. Para isto, foram estabelecidos dois transectos paralelos à borda da mata, nas distâncias de 25 ("perto") e 525 metros ("longe") da borda. A abundância de sirfídeos foi comparada empregando-se o teste χ2 (p ≤ 0,05). No total, foram capturados 1845 sirfídeos adultos, representados por 15 espécies e três gêneros. A maior abundância de sirfídeos afidófagos foi registrada para espécie Allograpta exotica (60,43%), seguida por Toxomerus dispar (17,78%) e Toxomerus watsoni (7,26%) (Diptera: Syrphidae). Uma inferência de destaque foi que durante o estádio de perfilhamento do trigo, todas as lavouras apresentaram maior abundância de sirfídeos afidófagos próximo à borda da mata (25m). A abundância inicial da população de sirfídeos afidófagos na lavoura de trigo é maior na proximidade da borda da mata, provavelmente devido os recursos disponíveis para sobreviverem durante a baixa infestação de presas na lavoura.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the distance from the edge of native forests on the abundance of aphidophagous hoverflies in wheat fields. The study was conducted in four commercial fields in the North of Paraná State, Brazil, during the wheat crop season of 2009. Two transects were surveyed parallel to the edge of the forest at two distances: 25 ("near") and 525 meters ("far") from the edge. The abundance of hoverflies was compared using a χ2 test (p ≤ 0.05). In total, 1,845 hoverflies adults were collected, which represented 15 species and three genera. The most abundant species was Allograpta exotica (60.43%), followed by Toxomerus dispar (17.78%) and Toxomerus watsoni (7.26%) (Diptera: Syrphidae). An important inference was that all fields showed a higher abundance of aphidophagous hoverflies closer to the edge of the forest (25 m) during the wheat tillering stage. The initial abundance of aphidophagous hoverflies in wheat fields is likely greater near the edge because of the availability of resources in the surrounding forest that enhance hoverfly survival during periods of low aphid infestation.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a abundância de inimigos naturais de pulgões do trigo (Triticum aestivum) em diferentes distâncias da borda da mata (2,0 a 200 m), nos municípios de Londrina e Ibiporã, PR, na safra 2008. No total, foram quantificados 11.316 pulgões, 682 múmias, 487 parasitoides e 20.366 predadores. Não foi observada influência consistente da distância da borda da mata sobre os pulgões e os parasitoides. Entre os predadores, a família Dolichopodidae foi a mais abundante (87,74 e 98,55% em Ibiporã e Londrina, respectivamente) e apresentou maior população próximo à borda da mata, o que indica que essa área de refúgio favorece esse predador.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the abundance of natural enemies of wheat (Triticum aestivum) aphids at different distances from the edge of the forest (2.0 to 200 m), in the municipalities of Londrina and Ibiporã, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, in the 2008 crop season. A total of 11,316 aphids, 682 mummies, 487 parasitoids, and 20,366 predators were quantified. The effect of the distance from the edge of the forest on aphids and parasitoids was not consistent. Among predators, the Dolichopodidae family was the most abundant (87.74 and 98.55% in Ibiporã and Londrina, respectively) and showed a higher population near the edge of the forest, indicating that this refuge area favors that predator.

RESUMO: Este estudo investigou os aspectos biológicos de Dichelops melacanthus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) em três temperaturas (19±1°C, 25±1°C e 31±1°C), alimentados com grãos imaturos de milho 2B688Hx (expressa a proteína inseticida Cry1F, para o controle de lepidópteros-alvo) e 2B688. Foi observado que a temperatura de 19±1°C prejudicou o desenvolvimento de D. melacanthus, pois, nessa condição, foi registrada a maior taxa de mortalidade das ninfas, menor peso de adultos e as fêmeas não ovipositaram. Por outro lado, a duração da fase jovem, mortalidade, peso de adultos, fecundidade e viabilidade de ovos não diferiu entre as temperaturas 25±1°C e 31±1°C. Também foi demonstrado que os aspectos biológicos dos percevejos alimentados com grãos imaturos de milho 2B688Hx não diferiram dos que se desenvolveram com a isolinha 2B688. Este estudo comprova que D. melacanthus desenvolve-se melhor em condições de temperaturas mais elevadas (até 31±1°C), e o fato de se alimentar com grãos imaturos de milho 2B688Hx não afeta o seu desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the development of Dichelops melacanthus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) at different temperatures (19±1°C, 25±1°C and 31±1°C) reared on 2B688Hx (expressing Cry1F insectice protein to control lepidopterans target) immature corn grains. The temperature of 19±1°C impaired the development of D. melacanthus and recorded the highest mortality of nymphs, lower weight and adult females laid no eggs. Moreover, the length of the nymphal biology, adult weight, fecundity and viability of eggs did not differ between temperatures 25±1°C and 31±1°C. It was also shown that the biological aspects of green belly stink bugs fed with 2B688Hx immature grains of corn do not differ from that develop with 2B688 isoline. This study showed that the biological cycle of D. melacanthus is favored at warmer temperature (until 31±1°C), and the consume of immature corn grain 2B688Hx does not affect its development.

RESUMO: Este estudo investigou o parasitismo natural de Mythimna sequax Franclemont, 1951, em uma lavoura de trigo, durante a safra 2008. No total, foram capturadas 237 lagartas, registrando-se um parasitismo de 10,12%. As espécies de taquinídeos Winthemia trinitatis (Thompson, 1963), Winthemia tricolor (Wulp, 1890), Lespesia aletiae (Riley, 1879) e Lespesia archippivora (Beneway, 1963) são registrados pela primeira vez parasitando a lagarta-do-trigo no Brasil. Adicionalmente, dois gêneros de parasitoides foram identificados, um taquinídeo Peleteria sp. (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) e um ichneumonídeo Ophion sp. (Fabricius, 1798). Este estudo registra pela primeira vez a ocorrência de quatro espécies de parasitoides em M. sequax no Brasil, e estudos adicionais são necessários para promover a conservação desses parasitoides no agroecossistema, assim como o desenvolvimento de programas de controle biológico para o manejo da lagarta-do-trigo.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the natural parasitism of Mythimna sequax Franclemont, 1951, in wheat during the crop season of 2008. In total, 237 larvae were captured, of which 10.12% were parasitized. The Tachinidae species Winthemia trinitatis (Thompson, 1963), Winthemia tricolor (Wulp, 1890), Lespesia aletiae (Riley, 1879), and Lespesia archippivora Beneway, 1963 are reported for the first time parasitizing the wheat armyworm in Brazil. In addition, two other genus of parasitoids were identified, one Tachinidae Peleteria Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 and one Ichneumonidae Ophion (Fabricius, 1798). This study reported for the first time four Tachinidae species parasitizing W. sequax, and further studies are needed to promote the conservation of these parasitoids in agroecossystem and development biological control programs for management of the wheat armyworm.
