ABSTRACT Introduction: Tibial shaft fracture is the most common long-bone fracture, and the standard treatment is intramedullary (IM) nail fixation. Regardless of the development of this technique pseudoarthrosis remains prevalent. Objectives: Evaluate the correlation between wedge fragment size and displacement, displacement of the main fragments of the 42B2 type, and pseudoarthrosis incidence. Methods: We retrospectively assessed all patients with 42B2 type fracture treated with IM nailing between January, 2015 and December, 2019. Six radiographic parameters were defined for preoperative radiographs in the anteroposterior (AP) and lateral views. Another six parameters were defined for postoperative radiographs at three, six, and 12 months. The Radiographic Union Score for Tibial Fractures score was used to assess bone healing. Results: Of 355 patients with tibial shaft fractures, 51 were included in the study. There were 41 (82.0%) male patients, with a mean age of 36.7 years, 37 (72.5%) had open fractures, and 28 (54.9%) had associated injuries. After statistical analysis, the factors that correlated significantly with nonunion were wedge height > 18 mm, preoperative translational displacement of the fracture in the AP view > 18 mm, and final distance of the wedge in relation to its original anatomical position after IM nailing > 5 mm. Conclusion: Risk factors for nonunion related to the wedge and42B2 fracture are wedge height > 18 mm, initial translation in the AP view of the fracture > 18 mm, and distance > 5 mm of the wedge from its anatomical position after IM nailing. RESUMO Introdução: A fratura da diáfise da tíbia é a fratura mais comum dentre os ossos longos, sendo o tratamento padrão a fixação com haste intramedular (HIM). Independentemente do desenvolvimento da técnica cirúrgica, a pseudoartrose continua prevalente. Objetivo: Avaliar a associação entre o tamanho e o desvio da cunha, os desvios dos fragmentos principais do tipo 42B2 e a incidência de pseudoartrose. Métodos: Avaliamos, retrospectivamente, todos os pacientes com fraturas tipo 42B2 tratados com hastes intramedulares entre janeiro de 2015 e dezembro de 2019. Seis parâmetros radiográficos foram definidos para as radiografias pré-operatórias nas incidências anteroposterior (AP) e perfil. Outros seis parâmetros foram definidos para as radiografias pós-operatórias em 3, 6 e 12 meses de acompanhamento pós-operatório. O Escore Radiográfico de União para as Fraturas da Tíbia (RUST) foi o instrumento usado para avaliar a consolidação óssea. Resultados: Dos 355 pacientes com fraturas da diáfise da tíbia, 51 foram incluídos no estudo. Os pacientes incluídos foram 41 (82,0%) do sexo masculino, com idade média de 36,7 anos, 37 (72,5%) com fraturas expostas e 28 (54,9%) com lesões associadas. Após análise estatística, os fatores que se correlacionaram significativamente com a não consolidação foram a altura da cunha > 18 mm, o deslocamento translacional pré-operatório da fratura na incidência AP > 18 mm e a distância final da cunha em relação à sua posição anatômica original após a cravação do MI > 5 mm. Conclusão: Os fatores de risco para a pseudartrose relacionada com a fratura em cunha e42B2 são a altura da cunha > 18 mm, a translação inicial na vista AP da fratura > 18 mm e a distância > 5 mm da cunha em relação à sua posição anatómica após a fixação IM. Abstract A carbonate-silicate low weathering phosphate ore from an igneous origin deposit in Southeastern Brazil presents a challenge mainly for apatite flotation from its gangue minerals, calcite and dolomite, plus the presence of phlogopite, diopside, magnetite, richterite, ilmenite, vermiculite, quartz and many other minor impurities. Recently, selectivity has been greatly enhanced by using CO2 instead of air, so in this study a variant process was used. In a first stage, carbonate minerals were floated with the use of CO2 as bubble gas; the collector was a saponified fatty acid, medium hydrocarbon chain. Then, the depressed minerals were floated using a sulfosuccinate collector and air as the froth gas. A significant improvement in the apatite concentration has been achieved: the initial 5.28% P2O5 tenor was raised to 21.58%. The overall P2O5 recovery was 61.8% and 12.0% of the global mass recovery. However, the amount of impurities was still significant with the presence of carbonates, phlogopite and minor magnetite. Therefore, the processing route presented herein is quite viable, but further research is necessary to improve the whole method.

Resumo Com o avanço global da Profilaxia Pré-exposição ao HIV (PrEP) questões sobre a formação do processo (bio)identitário de gays, bissexuais e outros homens que fazem sexo com homens usuários de PrEP complexificam-se para além de expressões de orientação sexual. Realizamos uma análise de conteúdo com categorias temáticas em um grupo online de usuários de PrEP orientada por abordagens de redes sociais e individualização social. Os indivíduos veem-se como PrEPsters como parte de um clube de PrEP, enquanto lidam com conflitos nas relações sexuais soro-discordantes. Discursos de autovalorização e de estigma contra pessoas que vivem com HIV/Aids (PVHA) surgiram como temas complexos na produção dos processos de identidade em quatro domínios interconectados: (1) autovalorização como uma estratégia para minorar ansiedade e o medo relacionados à aquisição de HIV, (2) valorização de grupo e expressões de empoderamento individual, (3) controle do corpo e poder de decisão sobre saúde sexual, e (4) discursos de diferenciação, estigma e criminalização das PVHA. Paradoxalmente, discursos internos e externos ao grupo constituem e desafiam a diferenciação de identidade; indivíduos em PrEP afirmaram lutar contra o estigma do HIV/Aids, enquanto reproduzem expressões discriminatórias relacionadas a HIV/Aids em seus discursos.

Abstract Micaceous minerals were characterized in three phosphatic ores from mines in Western Minas Gerais State, Brazil, all having complex chemical and mineralogical compositions, with emphasis on interstratified phyllosilicates. Knowledge of the relationship between the physical and chemical characteristics of the phyllosilicates contributed to a better understanding of the physicochemical processes in the mineral processing stages. Characterization of the minerals was carried out mainly by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), which allowed identifying vermiculite and three interstratified phyllosilicate phases. These minerals presented regular stratification of the unit cell, with different percentages of vermiculite and mica. Complementary studies by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDS microanalysis, thermogravimetry and chemical analysis confirmed the identifications by XRD.

Abstract Mineral liberation is an important variable to be considered in the iron ore geometallurgical studies, especially since it provides information leading to the understanding of the ore’s behaviour in the beneficiation process, mainly when harder ores are concerned. Nowadays, the professionals and researchers in the mineral industry have been using complementary techniques for mineralogical characterization. In this way, Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) and optical microscopy are amongst the most efficient and important tools in these studies. Together, these techniques can provide information leading to the development of geometallurgical models, including the degree of quartz liberation, mineral modal composition, mineralogical association and particle and mineral size distribution, as well as the spectrum of mineral liberation either by free surface or particle composition. The purpose of this study is to compare the degree of quartz liberation in four different iron ore types observed in optical microscopy and MLA. It also assesses the influence of mineral liberation in the quality of the resulting concentrate, according to the SiO2 content. All the results of the various quartz liberation degrees, determined by both MLA and optical microscopy were very close, as well as the correlation between the mineral liberation and the ore’s response in the flotation process. The investigation provided evidence that the mineral liberation study is an important tool in the prediction of the ore’s behaviour in the beneficiation process.

RESUMO Nos últimos anos, vários estudos foram realizados buscando reduzir o peso de veículos automotores, a fim de diminuir as emissões de poluentes. Neste cenário os aços de baixa densidade do sistema Fe-Mn-Al-C podem ser considerados uma alternativa promissora para suprir essas exigências da indústria automotiva. Geralmente, nos aços de baixa densidade, uma quantidade considerável de alumínio é adicionada a fim de reduzir a densidade geral do aço. No entanto, altos teores de alumínio promovem características distintas na microestrutura, destes aços quando comparados aos aços convencionais, como a presença do carboneto k ((Fe, Mn)3AlC), além da necessidade de se entender a combinação deste elemento com outros elementos de liga que podem ser adicionados. Neste contexto, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a microestrutura, a dureza e a densidade resultantes em função da influência do Al e do Nb em uma nova composição química pertencente ao sistema Fe-Mn-Al-C, na condição trabalhada a quente, a partir de análises de difração de raios X, microscopia eletrônica, medidas de dureza e densidade por princípio de Arquimedes. Os resultados permitiram indicar que o alto teor de Al adicionado promoveu uma redução de cerca de 13% na densidade, em relação aos aços estruturais tradicionais, e a estabilidade da ferrita δ até a temperatura ambiente. A condição avaliada apresentou a temperatura ambiente uma microestrutura formada por uma matriz de ferrita δ e α, juntamente com precipitados de carboneto k (AlFe3C) e carboneto de nióbio (NbC), estes dois últimos devido as adições de Al e Nb, resultando em uma dureza de 59,4 ± 1 HRA e uma estimativa do limite de resistência a tração de próximo a 800 MPa – dentro da faixa dos aços avançados de alta resistência (Advanced High Strenght Steels – AHSS).

ABSTRACT In recent years, several studies have been carried out seeking to reduce the weight of motor vehicles to reduce pollutant emissions. In this scenario, low-density steels from the Fe-Mn-Al-C system can be considered a promising alternative to meet these requirements of the automotive industry. Generally, in low-density steel, a considerable aluminum amount is added in order to reduce the overall density of the steel. However, high aluminum contents promote distinct characteristics in the microstructure of these steels when compared to conventional steels, such as the k carbide presence ((Fe,Mn)3AlC), in addition to the need to understand the combination of this element with other alloying elements that can be added. In this context, this paper aims to evaluate the resulting microstructure, hardness and density as a function of the Al and Nb influence in a new chemical composition belonging to the Fe-Mn-Al-C system, in hot worked condition from X-ray diffraction and eletron microscopy analyses, hardness, and density measurements by Archimedes’ principle. The results indicated that the high added Al promoted a reduction of about 13% in density, in relation to typical structural steels, and the δ ferrite stability up to room temperature. The condition evaluated at room temperature presented a microstructure formed by a matrix with δ and α ferrite, together with k-carbide (AlFe3C) and niobium carbide (NbC) precipitates, the latter two due to the Al and Nb additions, resulting in 59.4 ± 1 HRA hardness and an estimated tensile strength limit close to 800 MPa – within the range of the Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS).

Abstract High Strength Low Alloy steels (HSLA) for oil and gas pipelines should display high mechanical strength, toughness, ductility and weldability. In this work we studied the influence of quenching and tempering temperature on the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, percent elongation and hardness of API 5L steel pipes in order to optimize heat treatments to be performed after hot induction bending of the material. The thermal cycles involved soaking temperatures of 880, 920 and 960 °C, cooling water at 15, 23 and 31 °C and tempering at 530, 600 and 670 °C. From this, experimental design techniques were used to reduce the number of experiments. The results from contour maps suggest that soaking temperatures of 910 and 950 °C and tempering between 540 and 610 °C were the most suitable for treatment, regarding mechanical strength. The variation of the water temperature was not significant for the assumed cooling conditions. The prediction regression models of the mechanical properties from the variables involved in the heat treatments showed a good fit between the experimental and predicted results, with correlation coefficient between 0.89 and 0.94.

Abstract In this work, the residual stress study by XRD was carried out after martensitic transformation of a 304L steel subjected to plastic strain by rolling and tensile test, at room and cryogenic temperatures. This article intents to contribute with the understanding of residual stresses generated by martensitic transformation induced by plastic deformation due to its complexity. From the experimental conditions employed, it was possible to obtain high martensite volumetric fraction and it was possible to observe the influence of existing phases on the performance of residual stress measurements. In general, compressive residual stress was observed for both austenite and martensite phases. The samples rolled at cryogenic temperature showed higher magnitudes of compressive stresses, between -123 and -231 MPa, for martensite volumes between 98 and 100%. It was also clearly displacement and widening of diffraction line due to the presence of residual macro and microstresses when compared to the as-received material.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for making the diagnosis of subscapularis tears presents wide variation in the literature and there are few prospective studies. OBJECTIVE: To compare the findings from MRI and arthroscopy for diagnosing subscapularis tears. DESIGN AND SETTING: Diagnostic test study performed in a tertiary care hospital. METHODS: We included patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and who had firstly undergone high magnetic field MRI without contrast. The images were independently evaluated by a shoulder surgeon and two musculoskeletal radiologists. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, accuracy and inter and intra-observer agreement were calculated. RESULTS: MRIs on 200 shoulders were evaluated. The incidence of subscapularis tears was 69.5% (41.5% partial and 28.0% full-thickness). The inter and intra-observer agreement was moderate for detection of subscapularis tears. The shoulder surgeon presented sensitivity of 51.1% to 59.0% and specificity of 91.7% to 94.4%. The radiologists showed sensitivity of 83.5% to 87.1% and specificity of 41% to 45.9%. Accuracy ranged from 60.5% to 73.0%. CONCLUSION: The 1.5-T MRIs without contrast showed mean sensitivity of 70.2% and mean specificity of 61.9% for detection of subscapularis tears. Sensitivity was higher for the musculoskeletal radiologists, while specificity was higher for the shoulder surgeon. The mean accuracy was 67.6%, i.e. lower than that of rotator cuff tears overall.

RESUMO O aço inoxidável austenítico 304L é suscetível à transformação martensítica induzida por deformação. Esta transformação de fases depende da temperatura, assim como do modo, taxa e nível de deformação. Neste trabalho as fases e tensões residuais de um aço TRIP 304L, em que a transformação martensítica foi induzida por laminação a frio, foram investigadas por difração de raios-X (DRX). As análises foram realizadas em diferentes espessuras das amostras. Os resultados mostraram que a composição de fases e as tensões residuais são fortemente dependentes da espessura das amostras. Todas as amostras apresentaram tensão residual compressiva.

ABSTRACT The 304L austenitic stainless steel is susceptible to deformation induced martensitic transformation. This phase transformation depends on the temperature as well as on the mode, rate and level of deformation. In this work the phases and residual stresses of a 304L TRIP steel where martensitic transformation was induced by cold rolling were investigated by X-ray diffraction XRD. The analyses were performed for different sample thicknesses. The results showed that the phase composition and the residual stresses are strongly dependent on sample thickness. All samples showed a compressive residual stress.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o diagnóstico rápido de tuberculose multirresistente, utilizando um teste comercial de sondas em linha (LPA-plus), na rotina de um laboratório de referência de tuberculose. Métodos: O teste LPA-plus foi avaliado prospectivamente em 341 isolados simultaneamente submetidos ao teste de suscetibilidade aos antimicrobianos em meio líquido, pelo sistema automatizado. Resultados: Entre os 303 resultados fenotipicamente válidos, nenhum foi genotipicamente falso suscetível à rifampicina (13/13; 100% de sensibilidade). Dois isolados sensíveis à rifampicina apresentavam mutações no gene rpoB (288/290; especificidade de 99,3%), as quais, no entanto, não são associadas à resistência a rifampicina. O LPA-plus não identificou resistência à isoniazida em três isolados fenotipicamente resistentes (23/26; 88,5% de sensibilidade) e detectou todos os isolados sensíveis à isoniazida (277/277; especificidade de 100%). Entre os 38 (11%) resultados fenotípicos inválidos, o LPA-plus identificou 31 isolados sensíveis à rifampicina e à isoniazida, um resistente à isoniazida e seis como micobactérias não tuberculosas. Conclusões: O LPA-plus mostrou excelente concordância (≥91%) e acurácia (≥99%). Sua implementação pode acelerar o diagnóstico da tuberculose multirresistente, produzir número significativamente maior de resultados válidos do que o teste fenotípico de suscetibilidade aos antimicrobianos e fornecer informações adicionais sobre o nível de resistência aos fármacos.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the rapid diagnosis of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, by using a commercial line probe assay for rifampicin and isoniazid detection (LPA-plus), in the routine workflow of a tuberculosis reference laboratory. Methods: The LPA-plus was prospectively evaluated on 341 isolates concurrently submitted to the automated liquid drug susceptibility testing system. Results: Among 303 phenotypically valid results, none was genotypically rifampicin false-susceptible (13/13; 100% sensitivity). Two rifampicin-susceptible isolates harboured rpoB mutations (288/290; 99.3% specificity) which, however, were non-resistance-conferring mutations. LPA-plus missed three isoniazid-resistant isolates (23/26; 88.5% sensitivity) and detected all isoniazid-susceptible isolates (277/277; 100% specificity). Among the 38 (11%) invalid phenotypic results, LPA-plus identified 31 rifampicin- and isoniazid-susceptible isolates, one isoniazid-resistant and six as non-Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Conclusions: LPA-plus showed excellent agreement (≥91%) and accuracy (≥99%). Implementing LPA-plus in our setting can speed up the diagnosis of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, yield a significantly higher number of valid results than phenotypic drug susceptibility testing and provide further information on the drug-resistance level.

Resumo Fundamentos: A medida da pressão arterial é recomendada em toda avaliação médica, independente da especialidade. É um procedimento simples e de fácil realização, mas frequentemente negligenciado e realizado de forma incorreta. Objetivo: Avaliar se a medida da pressão arterial estava sendo realizada rotineiramente e comparar os valores encontrados por medida rotineira em consulta ambulatorial às medidas realizadas, seguindo a técnica adequada. Métodos: Estudo transversal e observacional que incluiu pacientes adultos (> 18 anos) atendidos nos ambulatórios de especialidades clínicas e cirúrgicas de um hospital universitário. Os sujeitos responderam a questionário específico e, em seguida, foram submetidos a três medidas de pressão arterial, seguindo as recomendações das diretrizes vigentes, por equipe treinada. Seguiram para o atendimento ambulatorial e após o término, foi verificado em prontuário se a pressão arterial foi aferida e, em caso positivo, anotou-se o valor desta aferição. Resultados: Foram selecionados consecutivamente 129 pacientes com idade média de 53 anos (± 15,92) e predomínio do sexo feminino (61,2%). A maioria foi atendida em especialidades clínicas (70,5%) e 49,6% referiram diagnóstico prévio de hipertensão arterial sistêmica. A pressão arterial não foi aferida em 38,8% dos atendimentos, sendo mais frequente nas especialidades cirúrgicas (72,5% vs. 27,5%; p < 0,001). O diagnóstico prévio de hipertensão arterial sistêmica não influenciou na chance de um paciente ter sua pressão aferida (p = 0,082). Não houve diferença entre a pressão arterial aferida pelos pesquisadores e aquelas realizadas em consulta (118 mmHg vs. 117 mmHg; p = 0,651; 72 mmHg vs. 75 mmHg; p = 0,055). Conclusões: A pressão arterial dos pacientes não foi aferida em um grande número de atendimentos, principalmente nos ambulatórios de especialidades cirúrgicas.

Abstract Background: Blood pressure measurement is recommended in all medical evaluations, regardless of the specialty. It is a simple and easy-to-do procedure, but usually neglected or performed incorrectly. Objectives: To assess if blood pressure is being measured routinely and compare the values obtained in the usual ambulatory consultations to those obtained when following the adequate techniques. Methods: Cross-sectional and observational study that included adult (age >18 years) outpatients treated in clinical and surgical specialties of a teaching hospital. Subjects answered a specific questionnaire and then three blood pressure measurements were performed according to the current guidelines by trained research staff. After that, the patients had their appointments and at the end, the medical charts were checked to see if blood pressure was measured and, if so, the observed value was recorded. Results: We included 129 consecutive patients with a mean age of 53 years (± 15.92) predominantly females (61.2%). Most of the appointments occurred in clinical specialties (70.5%) and 49.6% reported themselves as hypertensive. Blood pressure was not measured in 38.8% of the patients, more frequently in surgical specialties (72,5% vs. 27,5%; p < 0,001). The previous diagnosis of hypertension did not influence the chance of a patient having his blood pressure measured (p = 0,082). There were no differences between the blood pressure measured by the researchers and those recorded at the medical charts (118 mmHg vs. 117 mmHg; p = 0,651; 72 mmHg vs. 75 mmHg; p = 0,055). Conclusions: The patients' blood pressure levels were not measured in many of the medical appointments, especially at outpatient clinics of surgical specialties.

The API 5L X70 steel is used in high-pressure gas transmission pipelines. Because of this, knowledge of presence of residual stress and their magnitude is important to assess the material integrity in service. For the pipeline manufacturing, tubes need to be curved which is often made using the hot induction bending process. This process can introduce different residual stress depending of tube position. For this research, in order to evaluate the residual stress, was used an API 5L X70 tube that was previously curved by hot induction process. Samples were taken from the extrados, intrados, neutral line and straight section of the curved tube. Residual stresses were studied by two conventional methods: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Hole-Drilling, which are destructive and non-destructive methods, respectively, in order to assess their qualitative responses. Each of these methods presents particular methodologies in sample preparation and material analysis, but also they differ in factors such time consumption and cost of the analysis. The qualitative responses obtained by the two different methods were comparable and satisfactory and pointed out the existence of a compressive residual stress state in steel pipe.

Abstract The crystallographic texture developed during cold rolling and subsequent annealing of interstitial free sheet steels aims to increase conformability. For this, it is necessary to obtain partial α-fiber and continuous and homogeneous γ-fiber texture components. In this work, the influence of symmetric (SR) and asymmetric (AR) cold rolling on crystallographic texture and mechanical properties of an interstitial free steel (IF) was investigated. Symmetric cold rolling yields α- and γ-fibers, which are enhanced as deformation increases. Moreover, α-fiber weakening occurs due to recrystallizations, improving formability. The same fibers are produced by asymmetric cold rolling, but in this case, the γ-fiber is slightly shifted in psi, which is one of Euler angles second ROE's notation1,2, and more homogeneous than in symmetric rolling. The best mechanical properties were achieved by asymmetric cold rolling/annealed with about 80% deformation.
