Abstract BACKGROUND: The burnout syndrome can be avoided and/or have its signs and symptoms reduced by knowing the five associated factors that help identify the health and working conditions of the professors of graduate programs. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors associated with burnout among faculty members of graduate stricto sensu programs. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 585 faculty members of Graduate Programs in Language Teaching and Linguistics in Brazil. METHODS: Data were collected through an online questionnaire. The outcomes were the dimensions of burnout and its related factors identified through multiple templates of logistic regression. RESULTS: Faculty members with increased chances of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization mentioned the use of medications due to labor activities. The negative influence of pace and intensity of work, thoughts about quitting the program, and having to produce three or more scientific articles were associated with higher chances of emotional exhaustion, while having to achieve nine hours per week in undergraduate programs was related to reduced personal accomplishment. Having a conjugal relationship, satisfaction with health and work, post-doctoral degree, autonomy, and good interpersonal relationships with faculty members of the program reduced the chances of emotional exhaustion. Reduced chances of depersonalization occurred among those who were satisfied with work, had good interpersonal relationships with advisees and faculty members, and received productivity funding. CONCLUSION: Sociodemographic, health, and occupational factors related to the dimensions of burnout were identified.

ABSTRACT Hydrological modeling in decision-making is particularly challenging in tropical countries such as Brazil. There are numerous modeling tools; however, many applications have focused on watersheds with a total area of <20,000km2. Here we tailored a customized SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) ecohydrological model application using the SWAT CUP tool for calibration and validation of the Rio das Velhas, a relatively large, complex Brazilian basin (~28,000km2). The Rio das Velhas is the longest tributary of the São Francisco River and contains heterogeneous landforms, soils, vegetation, and land uses. A multisite calibration method obtained specific regionalized parameters for each sub-basin group for successfully simulating Rio das Velhas streamflows. Our results showed a suitable adjustment of the model. Nash-Sutcliff (NS) model performance values were 0.73-0.97 (calibration) and 0.51-0.98 (validation). The percent bias (PBIAS) was -11.3 to 19.4 (calibration) and -18.6 to 24.6 (validation), and the coefficient of determination values (R2) were >0.6 in all sub-basins on a monthly basis. We also explored how four contrasting land use scenarios affected four water-flow variables (surface runoff, base flow, percolation, and total streamflow). Our results show that by using multiple flow-monitoring stations and multisite calibration approaches, ecohydrological models can be useful for managing basin-extent water resources in countries of continental dimensions such as Brazil.

RESUMO O uso de ferramentas de modelagem hidrológica na tomada de decisão é particularmente desafiador em países tropicais como o Brasil. Existem inúmeras ferramentas de modelagem disponíveis; entretanto muitas aplicações destas ferramentas são focadas em bacias hidrográficas com área total <20.000 km2. Neste trabalho, adotamos e customizamos o modelo ecohidrológico SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) usando a ferramenta SWAT CUP para calibração e validação do Rio das Velhas, uma relativamente grande e complexa bacia brasileira (~ 28.000 km2). O Rio das Velhas é o maior afluente da bacia do rio São Francisco e contém formas de relevo, solos, vegetação e usos da terra heterogêneos. Usando um método de calibração multi-site, parâmetros regionalizados específicos foram obtidos para cada grupo de sub-bacias para simular com sucesso as vazões do Rio das Velhas. Nossos resultados mostraram um bom ajuste do modelo. Os valores do coeficiente de performance Nash-Sutcliff (NS) foram 0,73-0,97 (calibração) e 0,51-0,98 (validação). A porcentagem de viés (PBIAS) foi de -11,3 a 19,4 (calibração) e -18,6 a 24,6 (validação) e os valores do coeficiente de determinação (R2) foram >0,6 em todas as sub-bacias considerando uma escala mensal. Também exploramos as maneiras pelas quais quatro cenários contrastantes de uso da terra impactam às quatro variáveis de vazões avaliadas (escoamento superficial, fluxo de base, percolação e fluxo total). Nossos resultados mostram que, usando múltiplas estações de monitoramento de vazão e abordagens de calibração multi-site, os modelos ecohidrológicos podem de fato ser úteis para gerenciar os recursos hídricos da extensão da bacia em países de dimensões continentais como o Brasil.

Resumo Contexto: Tendo por base os estudos do Modelo Multifatorial Teresa Lluch (1999), foi criado e validado um Programa Promotor Saúde Mental Positiva (SM+) para adolescentes e aplicado numa turma piloto. Após 3 meses do final do programa, procedeu-se ao follow-up na mesma turma, dando origem a novos dados. O trabalho integra-se Projeto Saúde Mental Positiva: CINTESIS/NursID: Centro de Investigação em Tecnologias e Serviços de Saúde/ Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto. Objetivo(s): Avaliar o impacto do programa de SM+ em adolescentes após 3 meses do seu término, analisar a eficácia do programa SM+ na promoção da saúde mental dos adolescentes em ambiente escolar e avaliar a vulnerabilidade psicológica dos adolescentes. Métodos: Estudo quantitativo, observacional-descritivo e longitudinal. A amostra foi constituída por 23 alunos com idades entre os 14-16 anos, e como instrumento foi aplicado novamente Escala de Vulnerabilidade Psicológica (EVP) e o Questionário de Saúde Mental Positiva (QSM+). Resultados: Antes do programa o QSM+ da turma era de 94,35, após programa passou a 92,61. Após 3 meses, QSM+ passou para 91,17. Cotações baixas no QSM+ correspondem a níveis mais elevados de SMP, variando entre 39 e 156. Na EVP registou-se alterações, passando de 14,26 após o programa para 15,39 no follow-up. Conclusões: Apesar das diferenças observadas não terem significado estatístico, que nos permita afirmar que o Programa de SM+ teve eficácia na saúde mental dos adolescentes e na sua vulnerabilidade psicológica, foram observadas mudanças a nível comportamental, com maior interajuda entre eles, melhor comunicação e mais ativos nas atividades escolares.

Abstract Background: Based on studies of Teresa Lluch's Multifactorial Model (1999), a Positive Mental Health Promoting Program for adolescents was created and validated and applied to a pilot class. Three months after the end of the program, we followed up in the same class, giving rise to new data. The work is part of the Positive Mental Health Project of CINTESIS / NursID of the Research Center on Health Technologies and Services and the Porto School of Nursing. Aim: To assess the impact of the positive mental health (PMH) program on adolescents 3 months after its end; analyze the effectiveness of the PMP program in promoting adolescent mental health in the school environment and assess the psychological vulnerability of adolescents. Methods: The study was quantitative, observational, descriptive and longitudinal. The sample consisted of 23 students aged 14 to 16 years, and as instrument was applied again the psychological vulnerability scale and the Positive Mental Health Questionnaire (QSM +). Results: Before the program, the class's QSM + was 94.35, after the program it went to 92.61. After 3 months, the QSM + increased to 91.17. Low quotations on the QSM + correspond to higher levels of SMP, ranging from 39 to 156. In EVP, there were changes, going from 14.26 after the program to 15.39 in the follow-up. Conclusions: Although the observed differences have no statistical significance, which allows us to affirm that the PMP Program was effective in the mental health of adolescents and their psychological vulnerability, changes were observed at the behavioral level, with greater mutual help between them, better communication and more active in school activities.

RESUMO. No mundo, estudos sobre a prevalência de demência em idosos indígenas são insuficientes, porém nas evidências disponíveis, a prevalência varia de baixa a muito alta, com início precoce da doença e elevada taxa de mortalidade após o diagnóstico inicial. As evidências em países de baixa e média renda são escassas, e neles a prevalência de demência aumentará significativamente nas próximas décadas. Objetivo: Determinar a prevalência de déficit cognitivo e fatores associados em indígenas brasileiros da etnia Mura no Amazonas, Brasil. Métodos: Duzentos e dezessete indígenas com 50 anos ou mais do Amazonas, Brasil, foram submetidos a avaliação cognitiva. Atenção, memória, fluência verbal, desempenho visuoespacial e estado de humor compuseram o diagnóstico de déficit cognitivo. Resultados: A prevalência de déficit cognitivo foi de 43,3% (intervalo de confiança - IC95% 36,6-49,7) e variou de acordo com a idade [odds ratio - OR=1,03 (IC95% 1,00-1,06)], educação [OR=0,74 (IC95% 0,62-0,87)], índice de massa corporal [OR=0,91 (IC95% 0,83-0,98)] e renda [OR=0,52 (IC95% 0,27-0,99)]. Conclusões: O comprometimento cognitivo teve início precoce na comunidade indígena, sendo sua prevalência maior em idosos com baixa escolaridade e baixa renda familiar. Esses achados destacam a importância da implementação de políticas públicas de saúde indígena, com foco na formação de profissionais de saúde, para a detecção precoce do déficit cognitivo.

ABSTRACT. Studies on the prevalence of dementia in the indigenous population are still scarce worldwide. In the few available studies, prevalence evidence varies from low to very high, with early onset of the disease and high mortality rate after the initial diagnosis. Still, little is known about the rate of dementia in indigenous populations from low- and middle-income countries, where the dementia prevalence in the general population is estimated to increase significantly in the next decades. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of cognitive impairment and associated factors in Brazilian indigenous people of the Mura ethnicity in Amazonas, Brazil. Methods: A total of 217 indigenous individuals aged 50 years and older from Amazonas, Brazil, were submitted to cognitive assessment. Attention, memory, verbal fluency, visuospatial performance, and mood state composed the cognitive impairment diagnosis. Results: The prevalence of cognitive impairment was 43.3% (95%CI 36.6-49.7) and varied according to age [OR=1.03 (95%CI 1.00-1.06)], education [OR=0.74 (95%CI 0.62-0.87)], body mass index [OR=0.91 (95%CI 0.83-0.98)], and income [OR=0.52 (95%CI 0.27-0.99)]. Conclusions: Cognitive impairment had an early onset in an indigenous community, and its prevalence was greater in older individuals with low education and low family income. These findings highlight the importance of implementing public indigenous health policies focusing on health professional training for early cognitive impairment detection.

RESUMO Atualmente não há tratamento curativo para as demências neurodegenerativas ou para a demência vascular, mas algumas intervenções farmacológicas e não farmacológicas podem contribuir para aliviar os sintomas, retardar a progressão da doença e melhorar a qualidade de vida. As abordagens terapêuticas atuais são baseadas na etiologia, no perfil dos sintomas e no estágio da demência. Neste artigo apresentamos recomendações sobre os tratamentos farmacológicos e não farmacológicos da demência devida à doença de Alzheimer, comprometimento cognitivo vascular, demência frontotemporal, demência da doença de Parkinson e demência com corpos de Lewy.

ABSTRACT There is currently no cure for neurodegenerative or vascular dementias, but some pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions may contribute to alleviate symptoms, slow disease progression and improve quality of life. Current treatment approaches are based on etiology, symptom profile and stage of dementia. This manuscript presents recommendations on pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments of dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease, vascular cognitive impairment, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease dementia, and dementia with Lewy bodies.

RESUMO A demência da doença de Parkinson (DDP) e a demência com corpos de Lewy (DCL) representam a segunda causa mais comum de demência neurodegenerativa em pessoas com mais de 65 anos, ocasionando progressivo declínio cognitivo e comprometimento da qualidade de vida. O presente estudo tem como objetivo prover um consenso de especialistas sobre a DDP e DCL, baseado em revisão sistemática da literatura brasileira e revisão não-sistemática de literatura internacional. Ademais, tal estudo visa promover informação e conceder recomendações sobre abordagem diagnóstica, com foco nos níveis de atenção primária e secundária em saúde. Com base nos dados disponíveis, recomendamos que os profissionais realizem pelo menos um breve instrumento cognitivo global, como o Mini-Exame do Estado Mental, contudo de preferência optem pela Avaliação Cognitiva de Montreal e o Exame Cognitivo de Addenbrooke-Revisado. Observa-se uma carência de instrumentos validados para a avaliação precisa das habilidades funcionais em pacientes brasileiros com DDP e DCL. Além disso, mais estudos focando em biomarcadores com coortes brasileiras também são necessários.

ABSTRACT Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) represent the second most common type of degenerative dementia in patients aged 65 years and older, leading to progressive cognitive dysfunction and impaired quality of life. This study aims to provide a consensus based on a systematic Brazilian literature review and a comprehensive international review concerning PDD and DLB. Moreover, we sought to report on and give recommendations about the best diagnostic approaches focusing on primary and secondary care. Based on the available data, we recommend clinicians to apply at least one brief global cognitive instrument to assess PDD, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination and preferably the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination-Revised. Validated instruments to accurately assess functional abilities in Brazilian PD patients are still incipient. Further studies should focus on biomarkers with Brazilian cohorts.

RESUMO A “demência frontotemporal” (DFT) é uma síndrome clínica, cujo denominador comum é o acometimento focal dos lobos frontais e/ou temporais. A DFT tem três fenótipos clínicos distintos: a variante comportamental e dois subtipos linguísticos, a saber, a afasia progressiva primária não-fluente/agramática (APP-NF/A) e a afasia progressiva primária semântica (APP-S). A DFT é a segunda causa mais comum de demência em indivíduos com idade inferior a 65 anos, após a doença de Alzheimer. O presente artigo apresenta recomendações para diagnóstico da DFT no cenário brasileiro, considerando os três níveis de complexidade do sistema de saúde: atenção primária à saúde e níveis secundários. São propostos protocolos de investigação diagnóstica abrangendo testagem cognitiva, avaliação comportamental, avaliação fonoaudiológica, exames laboratoriais e de neuroimagem.

ABSTRACT “Frontotemporal dementia” (FTD) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the focal involvement of the frontal and/or temporal lobes. FTD has three clinical phenotypes: the behavioral variant and two linguistic subtypes, namely, non-fluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia (PPA-NF/A) and semantic PPA (PPA-S). FTD is the second most common cause of dementia in individuals under the age of 65 years. This article presents recommendations for the diagnosis of FTD in the Brazilian scenario, considering the three levels of complexity of the health system: primary health care, secondary and tertiary levels. Diagnostic guidelines are proposed, including cognitive testing, behavioral and language assessments, laboratory tests, and neuroimaging.

RESUMO Este consenso realizado pela Academia Brasileira de Neurologia (ABN) abordará de maneira prática como avaliar pacientes com queixas cognitivas e como realizar o diagnóstico clínico e etiológico das três síndromes clínicas associadas aos estágios de declínio cognitivo: declínio cognitivo subjetivo (DCS), comprometimento cognitivo leve (CCL) e demência. O diagnóstico de DCS é discutido pela primeira vez em consenso da ABN e as atualizações para o diagnóstico de CCL e demência são abordadas, bem como a recomendação para o uso de testes cognitivos apropriados, investigação etiológica pertinente e cuidados aos pacientes com declínio cognitivo nos diferentes níveis de atenção do Sistema Único de Saúde. Foi realizada pesquisa dos principais instrumentos de avaliação utilizados em nosso meio e na América Latina.

ABSTRACT This consensus, performed by the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (BAN) will approach practically how to evaluate patients with cognitive complaints and how to clinically and etiologically diagnose the three clinical syndromes associated with the different stages of cognitive decline: subjective cognitive decline (SCD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia. This BAN consensus discusses SCD diagnosis for the first time, updates MCI and dementia diagnoses, recommends the adequate cognitive tests and the relevant etiological work-up and care of patients with cognitive decline at different levels of care within the Brazilian Unified Health System. We also review the main assessment instruments used in Brazil and Latin America.

RESUMO Desde a publicação das últimas recomendações para o diagnóstico e tratamento da Demência Vascular pela Academia Brasileira de Neurologia em 2011, avanços significativos ocorreram na terminologia e critérios diagnósticos. O presente manuscrito é resultado do consenso entre especialistas indicados pelo Departamento Científico de Neurologia Cognitiva e do Envelhecimento da Academia Brasileira de Neurologia (2020-2022). O objetivo foi atualizar as recomendações práticas para a identificação, classificação e diagnóstico do Comprometimento Cognitivo Vascular (CCV). As buscas foram realizadas nas plataformas MEDLINE, Scopus, Scielo e LILACS. As recomendações buscam fornecer uma ampla revisão sobre o tema, então sintetizar as evidências para o diagnóstico do CCV não apenas para neurologistas, mas também para outros profissionais de saúde envolvidos na avaliação e nos cuidados ao paciente com CCV, considerando as diferentes realidades dos níveis de atenção à saúde (primário, secundário e terciário) no Brasil.

ABSTRACT Since the publication of the latest recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of Vascular Dementia by the Brazilian Academy of Neurology in 2011, significant advances on the terminology and diagnostic criteria have been made. This manuscript is the result of a consensus among experts appointed by the Scientific Department of Cognitive Neurology and Aging of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (2020-2022). We aimed to update practical recommendations for the identification, classification, and diagnosis of Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI). Searches were performed in the MEDLINE, Scopus, Scielo, and LILACS databases. This guideline provides a comprehensive review and then synthesizes the main practical guidelines for the diagnosis of VCI not only for neurologists but also for other professionals involved in the assessment and care of patients with VCI, considering the different levels of health care (primary, secondary and tertiary) in Brazil.

RESUMO A doença de Alzheimer (DA) e outras demências neurodegenerativas têm um curso progressivo com comprometimento da cognição, capacidade funcional e comportamento. A maioria dos estudos enfocou a DA. A demência grave está associada ao aumento da idade, maior morbimortalidade e aumento dos custos de cuidados. É fundamental reconhecer que a demência grave é o período mais longo de progressão, com o paciente vivendo muitos anos nesta fase. É a fase mais heterogênea do processo, com diferentes habilidades e expectativa de vida. Esta diretriz de prática concentra-se na demência grave para melhorar o manejo e o cuidado nessa fase da demência. Como um longo período no continuum da demência, as abordagens não farmacológicas e farmacológicas devem ser consideradas. Intervenções multidisciplinares (fisioterapia, fonoaudiologia, nutrição, enfermagem, entre outras) são essenciais, além de educacionais e de apoio aos cuidadores.

ABSTRACT Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative dementias have a progressive course, impairing cognition, functional capacity, and behavior. Most studies have focused on AD. Severe dementia is associated with increased age, higher morbidity-mortality, and rising costs of care. It is fundamental to recognize that severe dementia is the longest period of progression, with patients living for many years in this stage. It is the most heterogeneous phase in the process, with different abilities and life expectancies. This practice guideline focuses on severe dementia to improve management and care in this stage of dementia. As it is a long period in the continuum of dementia, clinical practice should consider non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches. Multidisciplinary interventions (physical therapy, speech therapy, nutrition, nursing, and others) are essential, besides educational and support to caregivers.

RESUMO Este artigo apresenta o consenso realizado pelo Departamento Científico de Neurologia Cognitiva e do Envelhecimento da Academia Brasileira de Neurologia sobre os critérios diagnósticos da Doença de Alzheimer (DA) no Brasil. Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura e dos critérios clínicos e de pesquisa para DA, sendo propostos protocolos para o diagnóstico de DA em níveis de atenção primária, secundária e terciária. Dentro deste cenário clínico, são apresentados os critérios diagnósticos para DA típica e atípica, além de instrumentos de avaliação clínica, cognitiva e funcional; bem como propedêutica complementar com exames laboratoriais e de neuroimagem. ABSTRACT This paper presents the consensus of the Scientific Department of Cognitive Neurology and Aging from the Brazilian Academy of Neurology on the diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in Brazil. The authors conducted a literature review regarding clinical and research criteria for AD diagnosis and proposed protocols for use at primary, secondary, and tertiary care levels. Within this clinical scenario, the diagnostic criteria for typical and atypical AD are presented as well as clinical, cognitive, and functional assessment tools and complementary propaedeutics with laboratory and neuroimaging tests. Resumo Objetivou-se estimar a proporção de mulheres com acompanhante em tempo integral em maternidades brasileiras vinculadas à Rede Cegonha (RC) e compará-las entre as macrorregiões no Brasil. Estudo de abrangência nacional, realizado no período de dezembro de 2016 a outubro de 2017. Participaram do estudo 10.665 puérperas de todas as regiões do Brasil, que pariram em uma das 606 maternidades com plano de ação regional aprovado na RC. Foram estimadas proporções e respectivos intervalos de confiança a 95%, ajustados para o efeito do cluster, comparando-se as macrorregiões pelo teste Qui-quadrado de Wald. A presença do acompanhante em tempo integral ocorreu em 71,2% das maternidades, sendo maior entre puérperas com idade de 20-35 anos, de cor parda, com maior escolaridade, casadas e assistidas em parto vaginal. Quase 30% das puérperas não tiveram acompanhante em tempo integral. Nas regiões Sudeste e Centro-Oeste, mulheres pretas autodeclaradas, de menor escolaridade e solteiras foram menos acompanhadas. O momento do parto teve menor presença do acompanhante (29,2%). Apesar dos avanços, este direito ainda não é cumprido integralmente, apontando para a ocorrência de iniquidades sociais entre as macrorregiões brasileiras.

Abstract The objective was to estimate the proportion of women with a full-time companion in Brazilian maternities linked to the Rede Cegonha (RC) and to compare them between the macro-regions in Brazil. A nationwide study, carried out from December/2016 to October/2017. 10,665 puerperal women from all regions of Brazil participated in the study, who gave birth at one of 606 maternity hospitals with a regional action plan approved by RC. Proportions and respective 95% confidence intervals were estimated, adjusted for the cluster effect, by comparing the macro-regions using Wald’s chi-square test. The presence of a full-time companion occurred in 71.2% of maternities, being higher among women aged 20-35 years, brown-skinned, with higher education, married, and assisted in vaginal delivery. Almost 30% of puerperal women did not have a full-time companion. In the Southeast and Midwest regions, self-declared black women, with less schooling and unmarried women were less accompanied. The moment of delivery had less presence of the companion (29.2%). Despite the advances, this right is still not fully fulfilled, pointing to the occurrence of social inequities among Brazilian macro-regions.

Proportions and respective 95% confidence intervals were estimated, adjusted for the cluster effect, by comparing the macro-regions using Wald’s chi-square test. The presence of a full-time companion occurred in 71.2% of maternities, being higher among women aged 20-35 years, brown-skinned, with higher education, married, and assisted in vaginal delivery. Almost 30% of puerperal women did not have a full-time companion. In the Southeast and Midwest regions, self-declared black women, with less schooling and unmarried women were less accompanied. The moment of delivery had less presence of the companion (29.2%). Despite the advances, this right is still not fully fulfilled, pointing to the occurrence of social inequities among Brazilian macro-regions.

Resumo O Programa de Pesquisas Ecológicas de Longa Duração (PELD) realizou estudos junto às comunidades vizinhas do Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD), no Vale do Aço em Minas Gerais, que resultaram em diversos cenários locais participativos. Entre esses resultados, foi elaborado um modelo espacialmente explícito que apresenta as aptidões das áreas pertencentes ao entorno do parque, para implementação de sistemas agroflorestais (SAF). O modelo foi construído com base no método de análise multicritério AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), com apoio de ferramentas de informação geográfica. O resultado apresentou as localizações e os tamanhos das áreas aptas para agroflorestas voltadas para a preservação ambiental e para geração de renda. As variáveis aplicadas foram: a) Índice de Vegetação de Diferença Normalizada (NDVI); b) Áreas de Preservação Permanente (APP); c) Classificação de Uso e Cobertura da Terra; d) proximidade de vias de acesso. As áreas de aptidão mais elevada para os SAF somam 5.580 hectares. Estas apresentam todas as características propícias, de acordo com as variáveis analisadas: fazem parte de áreas rurais antropizadas aquelas próximas às rodovias, dentro de APPs e com baixo índice de vegetação. Entre estas, grande parte são adjacentes ao PERD, principalmente nas zonas rurais de Coronel Fabriciano-MG e Timóteo-MG. As porções mais extensas são localizadas às margens dos rios maiores. Além disso, a partir de uma análise complementar, também foram identificados os perímetros mais aptos para os SAF que não fazem parte de APP. Por sua vez, estas áreas foram encontradas, em sua maioria, dentro das áreas rurais dos municípios de Coronel Fabriciano-MG, Ipatinga-MG e Caratinga-MG. Diante de todos os aspectos analisados, concluiu-se que os modelos gerados podem auxiliar trabalhos de implementação de SAF naquela região, dando suporte inicial para identificação das áreas mais propícias ao plantio.

ABSTRACT The Long-Term Ecological Research Program (PELD), conducted studies in communities located near Rio Doce State Park that have resulted in several participative scenarios. These results have a spatially explicit model that presents aptitudes of areas around the park for the implementation of agroforestry systems. This model was built with AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) multi-criteria analysis method and using geographic information system tools. The result presents locations and sizes of the areas, according to its levels of aptitude for agroforestry plantations that have environmental preservation and income generation as priority. The variables applied for the analysis are: a) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI); b) occurrence of Permanent Preservation Areas (APP); c) Land use/cover classification; d) proximity of access roads. The areas which show the highest levels of aptitude total 5.580 hectares. They have all the good characteristics, according to the analyzed variables: located in rural areas, close to roads, inside Permanent Preservation Areas and low level of vegetation. A large part of these areas are adjacent to the park, mainly, near the border with Municipality of Coronel Fabriciano and Timóteo, both in Minas Gerais state The biggest areas are located by the most important of the region river’s edge. Also, another analysis made by this work considered results outside the Permanent Preservation Areas. In this case, it can be noticed that there is a greater concentration of areas with the highest levels of aptitude in rural zones of the municipalities of Coronel Fabriciano, Ipatinga and Caratinga, in MG state. In the light of all the aspects analyzed, the conclusion is that the models generated can assist future works for the implementation of Agroforestry Systems in the region, giving initial indications about the best areas for plantings.

Abstract INTRODUCTION Maternal death continues to be one of the most challenging public health problems that needs to be addressed in low and middle-income countries. The objective of this study was to describe the problem of maternal death in Brazil, using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD). METHODS This study used data from the GBD 2019 to show the numbers of deaths and the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) - number of deaths/100,000 live births - in Brazil and its 27 Federated Units (FU), for ages 10 to 54 years, from 1990 to 2019. The annual variation of the MMR was estimated in 1990, 2010, and 2019. The MMR were shown for specific causes as well as for five-year age groups. The estimates were presented with 95% uncertainty intervals (UI). RESULTS The number of maternal deaths, as well as the MMR showed a 49% reduction from 1990 to 2019. This reduction occurred heterogeneously throughout the country, and the profile of the MMR for specific causes changed between 1990 and 2019: from hypertensive gestation diseases, to indirect maternal deaths, followed by hypertensive gestation diseases. In the extreme age groups, the MMR is higher, with mortality increasing exponentially in direct proportion with age. CONCLUSIONS Maternal deaths in Brazil have decreased substantially since 1990; however, the numbers still fall short of what was established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Indirect causes are the greatest problem in more than 60% of the FU, especially for hypertensive pregnancy diseases.
