Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Objective: To compare mortality in older adults with and without mild or moderate cognitive impairment over 15 years of follow-up in a middle-income country, where little information on this subject is available. Methods: A total of 1,281 community-dwelling older adults were followed-up for a median of 13.3 years. We evaluated their cognitive impairment using the Mini-Mental State Examination, categorizing it as none (1.0 SD above cutoff means), mild (1.0 SD below cutoff means) or moderate (2.0 SD below cutoff means). The date of death was determined by reviewing death certificates. Cox’s proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the risk of mortality in participants with cognitive impairment. Results: Participants with mild or moderate cognitive impairment had a higher mortality risk than those without it in the unadjusted model, but these associations did not remain in the final model. After sex stratification, only men with moderate cognitive impairment had a higher mortality risk in the final model. Conclusion: The findings suggest an association between moderate cognitive impairment and all-cause mortality in men in a large Brazilian cohort of older adults.

ABSTRACT Objective: Initial diagnosis of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is frequently associated with advanced stages and a poor prognosis. Thus, the need for earlier diagnoses and detection in relatives at risk for the disease has led to increased use of RET genetic screening. Subjects and methods: We performed RET screening in 247 subjects who were referred to the Brazilian Research Consortium for Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (BRASMEN) Center in the State of Ceará. Direct genetic sequencing was used to analyze exons 8, 10, 11, and 13-16 in MTC index cases and specific exons in at risk relatives. Afterward, clinical follow-up was offered to all the patients with MTC and their affected relatives. Results: RET screening was performed in 60 MTC index patients and 187 at-risk family members. At the initial clinical assessment of the index patients, 54 (90%) were diagnosed with apparently sporadic disease and 6 (10%) diagnosed with hereditary disease. After RET screening, we found that 31 (52%) index patients had sporadic disease, and 29 (48%) had hereditary disease. Regarding at-risk relatives, 73/187 were mutation carriers. Mutations in RET codon 804 and the rare p.M918V mutation were the most prevalent. Conclusions: Performing RET screening in Ceará allowed us to identify a different mutation profile in this region compared with other areas. RET screening also enabled the diagnosis of a significant number of hereditary MTC patients who were initially classified as sporadic disease patients and benefited their relatives, who were unaware of the risks and the consequences of bearing a RET mutation.

ABSTRACT To evaluate the fungal diversity in the Pirarungaua stream reopened after remaining channeled about 40 years in the Botanical Garden of São Paulo, Brazil, two experiments in the cold and dry season and two in the hot and rainy season were performed. Leaves of Tibouchina pulchra Cogn and mixed leaf litter were confined in nylon litter bags, submerged and collected monthly, together with free leaf litter samples. Some abiotic factors were measured in the water. The leaves were fragmented, incubated in sterile water at 22 ºC and microscopically analyzed. We identified 33 conidial fungal taxa, among which, 23 are new to this area. Comparing seasons, the similarity of the mycota of confined T. pulchra leaves corresponded to 39% and to 56% regarding the confined mixed leaf litter. Similarities of 48-50% occurred between the mycota of confined and free leaf litter samples. Confined leaves showed a tendency to support higher numbers of species, whereas some rare fungi like Ulocoryphus mastigophorus Michaelides L. Hunter & W.B Kendr were more frequent in free leaf litter. Based on the results, it is recommended to monitor the limnological conditions of the stream and to promote awareness among the local population and visitors about the importance of a water body, even artificial, for the establishment of microclimatic features, and for the biodiversity of fungi.

Abstract An updated synthesis of cyanobacteria and algae information is presented for Brazil aiming to refine the data gathered to date and evaluate the progress of the biodiversity knowledge about these organisms in the country since the publication of the Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The results of 2015 showed an increase of 1,250 species (35.7%) when compared to 2010, reaching a total of 4,747 species. The most diverse classes in species number were the Bacillariophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Florideophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae had the highest increase in species number in the five-year interval. The Southeast and South regions were the most diverse, however, the Northeast, with the states of Piauí and Sergipe, and the Central-west region, with Mato Grosso, Goiás and Distrito Federal, also stood out in the national algal biodiversity scenario. Despite the shortage of taxonomists and limited infrastructure, the results showed a significant improvement in the knowledge regarding the diversity of cyanobacteria and algae in the country during the study period, starting to even out regional geographical differences caused by subsampling.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

BACKGROUND: This report describes the clinical characteristics of children and adolescents bearers of oncological disease who were admitted to PICU with severe sepsis and septic shock. The predicting factors for mortality and for need of pulmonary mechanical ventilation were also determined. METHODS: Thirty-three children diagnosed with severe sepsis and septic shock were evaluated prospectively at the PICU of Hospital do Câncer between June and December of 2001. RESULTS: Thirty-three admissions were analyzed during this period; ages ranged from 1 to 23 years; 16 (48%) were boys and 17 (52%) were girls. Twenty patients had leukemia/lymphoma and 13 patients had solid tumors. Twenty-eight patients had a diagnosis of infectious diseases. In 73% of the patients, infection germs were isolated and gram negative organisms were responsible for 67% of the samples. Respiratory support was necessary for 18 patients (54%), inotropic support for 22 (67%) and dialysis for four patients. The mortality rate was of 41% for patients who needed inotropic support, of 69% for those requiring respiratory support and of 100% for those with an indication for dialysis. The overall mortality rate was of 27%. CONCLUSIONS: This research suggests that early intensive treatment for children with cancer exhibiting severe sepsis and/or septic shock could be an important factor to influence the mortality rate of these patients. Moreover, that noninvasive ventilation could be an option to reduce endotracheal intubation and invasive ventilation.

This work aimed identifying crops for intercropping and integrated methods for weed control in yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarpa Deg.) orchard, that will favor its production and profitability. The experiment was set up in May 1999, with the plants being conducted by a vertical support structure with one wire extended 2.0 m above the soil surface, and distributed in a spacing of 2.5 m x 5.0 m. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with four replications and six treatments as follows: T1 - maize (Zea mays L. , cv. BR 106) as intercrop; T2 - bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., cv. Pérola) as intercrop; T3 - pork bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.) in the interspace and hoeing in the plant lines; T4 - pork bean in the interspace and chemical weed control in the plant lines (glyphosate at 1.5 kg./ha); T5 - general chemical weed control (alachlor at 2.8 kg/ha + diuron at 1.2 kg/ha in pre-emergence and glyphosate at 1.5 kg/ha in post-emergence); T6 - control (general hoeing). Data obtained during the harvest period (May 1999 to April 2000) showed no statistical differences among treatments for yield (industry), fruit weight, length and diameter, total soluble solids and total titrable acidity. However, there was a statistical significance for total yield and yield for the fresh fruit market, with best results for bean as intercrop, giving a passion fruit yield of 12.82 t/ha. Both bean and maize should be recommended as intercrops during the first year of passion fruit cycle. The herbicides used both in pre- and post-emergence were economically viable and did not show toxic effects on the yellow passion fruit plants.
