RESUMO: A expressão potencial da produtividade das culturas constitui um desafio constante aos criadores de plantas frente às oscilações das variáveis ambientais, dificultando a seleção e onerando os custos operacionais e metodológicos na obtenção da cultivar ideal para determinada região. O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar os efeitos da interação genótipos x ambientes na seleção de linhagens de feijão-caupi com alta produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade genotípica simultaneamente, em ambientes da região Noroeste do estado do Rio de Janeiro, usando modelos mistos (Máximo Verosimilhança Restrita - REML/Melhor Predição Linear não Viesado - BLUP). Avaliou-se 27 genótipos de feijão-caupi em seis ambientes pela combinação de local (Cambuci-RJ e Bom Jesus do Itabapoana-RJ) e ano (2016, 2017 e 2018). Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados via procedimento REML/BLUP, e a seleção baseou-se no método da média harmônica do desempenho relativo dos valores genéticos (HMRPGV). Observou-se diferença significativa para ambiente e interação genótipo x ambiente. A variância residual e a variância da interação genótipo x ambiente formaram as maiores frações da variância fenotípica. As linhagens 4 (Bico-de-ouro 1-5-24), 6 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-4), 5 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-26) e 9 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-8) foram classificadas como superiores quanto a estabilidade e adaptabilidade e rendimento de grãos pelo critério da HMRPGV. As cultivares comerciais 13 (BRS-Tumucumaque) e 26 (BRS-Itaim) reuniram elevada produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade específica nas condições edafoclimáticas avaliadas.

ABSTRACT: The potential expression of crop productivity is a constant challenge for plant breeders in the face of oscillations in environmental variables, making selection difficult and increasing the operational and methodological costs in obtaining the ideal cultivar for a determined region. The objective of the research was to investigate the effects of genotype x environment interaction in the selection of cowpea lines with high grain yield, adaptability, and genotypic stability simultaneously, in environments of the Northwest region of Rio de Janeiro State, using mixed models (Maximum Restricted Likelihood - REML/Best Linear Unbiased Prediction - BLUP). 27 cowpea genotypes were evaluated in six environments by combining location (Cambuci-RJ and Bom Jesus do Itabapoana-RJ) and year (2016, 2017 and 2018). A randomized block design with four replications was performed. The genetic parameters were estimated via the REML/BLUP procedure, and the selection was based on the harmonic mean method of the relative performance of the genetic values (HMRPGV). A meaningful difference was observed for environment and genotype x environment interaction. The residual variance and the variance of the genotype x environment interaction formed the most significant fractions of the phenotypic variance. Lines 4 (Bico-de-ouro 1-5-24), 6 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-4), 5 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-26), and 9 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-8), stood out as superior in terms of stability and adaptability and grain yield by HMRPGV. Commercial cultivars 13 (BRS-Tumucumaque) and 26 (BRS-Itaim) had high grain yield, adaptability, and specific stability in the evaluated edaphoclimatic conditions.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to describe the main traits of the super-sweet maize cultivars ‘UENF SD 08’ and ‘UENF SD 09’, which produced higher yields than the control cultivar in the VCU (Value for Cultivation and Use) test series and proved to be competitive under the agro-climatic conditions of Northern and Northwestern Rio de Janeiro State.

Abstract The intervarietal hybrid ‘UENF 506-11’ was derived from full-sib maize families in the 11th cycle of reciprocal recurrent selection. It produces a grain yield of 7.57 tons ha-1, and is recommended for cultivation in the North and Northwest regions of the Rio de Janeiro State.

ABSTRACT The aim of the current study is to estimate the correlation coefficients and the consequence of genotypic correlations on direct and indirect effects through path analysis between agronomic traits of maize hybrids used for silage production. Eight (8) topcross hybrids and seven (7) checks were analyzed in completely randomized blocks, with six replications, in two environments: Campos do Goytacazes and Itaocara counties – Rio de Janeiro State, in the crop year 2015/2016. The following agronomic traits were assessed: plant height, first ear height, culm diameter, number of ears, ear yield with straw at silage maturity, ear yield without straw at silage maturity, grain yield at silage maturity, grains ratio in the fresh matter and fresh matter yield. The highest correlation estimates were found between the variables ear yield without straw and grain yield, and between ear yield with straw and ear yield without straw, with magnitudes 0.95 and 0.92, respectively. The coefficient of determination was high, which indicates that the assessed components explain most of the existing variation in fresh matter yield. According to the path analysis, the trait showing the strongest direct effect on fresh matter yield was the ear yield with straw at silage maturity, in association with the high correlation (r = 0.91), which showed the possibility of achieving significant gains through indirect selection.

Em programas de melhoramento genético, informações sobre a correlação entre caracteres são de grande importância para se aperfeiçoar a seleção simultânea de caracteres. Contudo, a quantificação e a interpretação da magnitude de uma correlação podem resultar em equívocos na estratégia de seleção. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, por meio da análise de trilha, as relações, direta e indireta, entre os componentes primários de produção e a produtividade de espiga de milho superdoce, e identificar os caracteres que mais contribuem para a produtividade de espiga (variável básica). Verifica-se que as variáveis utilizadas explicaram 94,77% da variação do peso de espiga (R²). Pela análise de trilha, apenas dois caracteres, o volume do grão (0, 2637) e o volume de espiga (0, 2536), apresentaram efeito direto na produção. Constata-se, portanto, que, apesar de a maioria dos caracteres apresentarem altas estimativas de correlação, essas ocorreram por efeitos indiretos de outros caracteres. Assim, tanto para seleção direta, quanto para seleção indireta, essas características são eficientes no aumento do peso médio da espiga de milho superdoce. Neste caso, a melhor estratégia seria a seleção simultânea de caracteres, enfatizando-se as características cujos efeitos indiretos são maiores. É oportuno salientar que o volume de grão e volume de espiga apresentaram maiores herdabilidades, quando comparados com peso de espigas, ou seja, 91,92, 88,6 e 80,52%, respectivamente. A alta herdabilidade estimada (91,92 e 88,6%) é um indicativo de possibilidades de elevados ganhos genéticos na seleção.

In breeding programs, information on the correlation between characters is essential to improve the simultaneous selection of characters. However, the measurement and interpretation of the magnitude of a correlation can lead to mistakes in the selection strategy. The objective of this study was to evaluate, using path analysis, the direct and indirect components between primary production and yield of supersweet corn ear and identify the characteristics that most contribute to ear yield (basic variable). The variables used explained 94.77% of the variance in ear weight (R2). The path analysis showed that only two characters, grain volume (0.2637) and ear volume (0.2536), had a direct effect on production. It appears, therefore, that although the majority of the characters present high correlation estimates, these indirect effects were due to other characters. Thus, for both direct selection and indirect selection for such characters are effective in increasing the average weight of supersweet corn ear. In this case, the best strategy would be the simultaneous selection of characters, emphasizing the characteristics whose effects are more indirect. It should be noted that grain volume and ear volume had higher heritability than ear weight, i.e., 91.92%, 88.6% and 80.52% respectively. The high heritability estimates (91.92% and 88.6%) is an indication of possible high gains in genetic selection.

Investigou-se o desempenho agronômico de genótipos de milho super-doce na região Norte Fluminense. Genótipos de milho super-doce foram retrocruzados com variedades de milho comum adaptadas a região (CIMMYT 8 e Piranão 8). Avaliaram-se oito características relacionadas à caracteres morfoagronômicos e rendimento de grãos. Houve efeito significativo de interação entre os cinco grupos de genótipos avaliados (Genitores Doadores, Parentais retrocruzados super-doce, Híbridos super-doce, híbridos de milho comum e populações de milho comum). A despeito do genótipo SH2 Piranão expressar baixo rendimento, os híbridos resultantes do intercruzamento entre os parentais retrocruzados se mostraram promissores no melhoramento do milho super-doce. O desempenho agronômico dos parentais super-doce e seus híbridos denota possibilidade de extração de linhagens com alto valor genético para obtenção de híbridos simples, bem como de cultivares de milho super-doce adaptadas a região Norte Fluminense.

We investigated the agronomic performance of super-sweet corn genotypes. Super-sweet corn genotypes were backcrossed with regionally adapted field varieties (CIMMYT 8 and Piranão 8). Eight morphological and yield-related traits were evaluated. A significant effect of interaction was observed between the five groups of genotypes (donor parents; super-sweet backcrossed parents; super-sweet intervarietal hybrids; common intervarietal corn hybrids; and field corn populations). Despite the low yield of genotype SH2Piranão, the hybrids resulting from interbreeding of the backcrossed parents for the improvement of super-sweet corn were promising. The agronomic performance of the super-sweet parents and their hybrids indicates the possibility of breeding lines with high genetic value to obtain single-cross hybrids and cultivars of super-sweet corn adapted to the northern region of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
