Abstract It is repeatedly stressed the need to characterize the extant biodiversity in tropical ecosystems. However, inventory studies are still progressing slowly in dry ecosystems, leading to the underestimation of their true biodiversity and hindering conservation efforts. In this study, we present primary and secondary data, along with an updated list of amphibians and reptiles from two localities in the São Francisco-Gurguéia region in Piauí. Additionally, we compare the species composition between nine areas within the Caatinga, which were sampled using standardized methods over the past ten years, to examine broader spatial patterns of community composition. To survey reptiles and amphibians, we employed similar methods and sampling efforts in two areas within the Serra das Confusões National Park (SCNP) region. Our surveys recorded a total of 73 species of amphibians and reptiles, of which 24 are new distribution records for the SCNP region. Consequently, our findings increase the known herpetofauna in the region to 94 species. Despite their proximity, the two sites in the SCNP region exhibited only 42% similarity in species composition, and they differed significantly from other areas within the Caatinga. Furthermore, even the closer Caatinga areas presented differences in species composition, highlighting the necessity to evaluate biodiversity across the landscape and contribute to understanding biogeographic patterns.

Abstract The genus Capsicum, native to tropical and subtropical America, belongs to the Solanaceae family, which includes commercially important vegetables such as chilies and green peppers. The silverleaf whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), causes losses to vegetables including Capsicum species. Among the alternatives of pest control, an effective, economical, and environmentally compatible method is the resistance of the host plant. Infestation by B. tabaci was evaluated in 73 Capsicum genotypes, corresponding to the species C. annuum, C. baccatum, C. sinense, C. frutescens and C. pubescens from an Ecuadorian genebank. Eighty-four percent of the C. baccatum genotypes evaluated showed the highest population densities of B. tabaci, while all the genotypes of C. sinense and C. frutescens had the lowest values (p < 0.05). The non-preference of adults and the scarce oviposition of B. tabaci on genotypes of C. sinense and C. frutescens suggests resistance due to antixenosis. These results could guide breeding programs for the resistance of Capsicum species to B. tabaci infestations.

Abstract Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) is a steel degradation that occurs in heat recovery steam generators in the power industry. The mechanism of this corrosion comprises an electrochemical dissolution of the semi-protective magnetite layer (Fe3O4) that is formed within the pipes employed in the boilers. The FAC is influenced by different factors such as fluid velocity, pH and dissolved oxygen concentration. In this context, Rotating Cage tests were used to evaluate the influence of pH and dissolved oxygen content on FAC of A210, P11 and P22 steels. General corrosion was lower for P11 and P22 steels, an effect consistent with the presence of chromium in their compositions. General corrosion was most critical at pH 8.5. The corrosion intensity decreased for the three steels when the dissolved oxygen concentration increased, at 2 m/s. This behavior is coherent considering the most effective precipitation of Fe2O3 inside the pores of the Fe3O4 layer in a more oxidizing environment. For 3 m/s, the corrosion intensity increased for both materials when oxygen increased, showing the shear stress effect. These behaviors were more significant at pH 8.5. About pitting corrosion, the analyzes show localized attack in the majority of coupons, however with very low number of pits.

Fungi and bacteria are well-known pathogens for plants, fruits, and animals, including humans. In this context, the prospection of antimicrobial agents is crucial to provide new alternatives for the treatment of microbial diseases. Hence, selenium- and tellurium-containing compounds are underexploited and herein, antimicrobial activity of several organochalcogenated compounds was evaluated against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and fungi. A direct comparison between Se- and Te-containing compounds was performed, as well as structure-activity relationship studies. Among assayed compounds, secondary Se-amines LQ16 and LQ20 and secondary Te-amine LQ28 showed excellent results against a variety of fungi, while primary Te-amine LQ10 demonstrated promising results against bacteria. These results suggest organoselenides and organotellurides may be used for the development of new antimicrobial agents.

The resistance of Annona muricata roots to the nematode Meloidogyne javanica was investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics in combination with principal component analysis (PCA). Metabolic changes in roots exposed and not exposed to the nematode were evaluated and compared. In addition, the presence of nematicidal compounds in the root extracts was investigated through in vitro assay against Meloidogyne javanica second-stage juveniles. Plants exposed to nematodes showed significant changes in their metabolism after 24 h. Several resistance-related metabolites, including dopamine, xanthine and aromatic compounds, could be identified in the roots with the joint analysis of 1D/2D NMR and the loadings of PC3 (17.8%). A.muricata root chloroform extract, containing mainly acetogenins, has shown nematostatic activity against M. javanica, suggesting that a pre-formed defense mechanism can support the reported resistance. For the first time, metabolomic studies allowed to identify induced and pre-formed defense mechanisms and their related metabolites in Annona muricata.

Abstract Most standards indicate the need of the evaluation of abnormal loads in the structural design, but in general, they do not provide many details about these actions and how to consider them in the design. The consequence of not considering these actions may be to the progressive collapse of the structure. This type of failure can be avoided by design of elements with sufficient robustness to control possible localized damage, ensuring adequate time for emergency measures to be taken. This work aims to discuss the progressive collapse and the behavior of masonry buildings subject to abnormal loads. An extensive literature review is carried out, highlighting the main procedures and strategies to mitigate this issue and the guidelines available in the standards. It is concluded that there is still an absence of works that deal with this kind of action in masonry buildings.

The chemical investigation of ethyl acetate extract from Paepalanthus planifolius capitula resulted in the identification of 1H-naphtho[2,3-c]pyran-1-one,9-[(6-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl)oxy]-3,4-dihydro-10-hydroxy-7-methoxy-3-methyl, semi-vioxanthin 9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, toralactone-9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, paepalantine-9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, semi-vioxanthin, 1H-naphtho[2,3-c]pyran-1-one,3,4-dihydro-9,10-dihydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-3-methyl, vioxanthin and paepalantine dimer, and also the isolation and identification of a new naphthopyranone dimer named planifoliusin A. The chemical structures of two compounds were elucidated by performing spectroscopic 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments and spectrometric HRMS (high-resolution mass spectrometry) analysis. Other six naphthopyranone dimers were proposed by MS fragmentation patterns. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for vioxanthin (7.8 µg mL-1), planifoliusin A (15.6 µg mL-1) and the ethyl acetate extract (31.2 µg mL-1) showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923).

The screening for antimicrobial activity of twenty five endophytic fungi isolated from the aerial parts of Paepalanthus chiquitensis (Eriocaulaceae) was assayed against the bacteria Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Salmonella setubal, and the yeast fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans. The ethyl acetate extract produced by Fusarium fujikuroi was the most bioactive and this fungus was chosen for the chemical study, affording the isolation of an alkaloid 2-(4-butylpicolinamide) acetic acid and three known metabolites: fusaric acid, indole acetic acid and the sesterterpene terpestacin. The minimal inhibitory concentration of the extract and of fusaric acid and indole acetic acid for all the tested microorganisms had values from 125 to 1000 µg mL-1.

Energy conversion, involving UV and Vis absorption to generate near infrared (NIR) emission at 1000 nm from nanostructured Pr3+/Yb3+ co-doped SiO2-Nb2O5 for solar cell application was the main focus of this work. The synthesis, structural and optical characterization of Pr3+/Yb3+ co-doped 70SiO2-30Nb2O5 nanocomposites and planar waveguides prepared by the sol gel method are reported. The influence of the rare earth content and thermal annealing on the crystallization process and the luminescence properties was studied. The excitation spectra revealed the energy transfer between the Pr3+ and Yb3+, involving mainly the 3P2 level of Pr3+ ions. Multiphonon decay and cross relaxation processes take place at higher rare earth concentration and annealing temperature, which increases the 1D2 level population and consequently the NIR emission from the Pr3+ ions. The nanostructured Pr3+/Yb3+ co-doped SiO2-Nb2O5 nanocomposites and waveguides show interesting NIR emission and optical properties for photonic applications.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

In the present study, a new composite material (SiO2/TiO2/ZnO) for copper preconcentration in water and food samples was evaluated. The sorbent was characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), textural data analyses, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The on-line preconcentration and visible spectrophotometric determination was based on loading 20.0 mL of sample at pH 7.0 through 50 mg of sorbent at a flow rate of 6.4 mL min-1. A fixed volume of 0.3 mL of 0.5 mol L-1 HNO3 elutes copper ions, in which react with 0.3% (m/m) diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) whose complex formed (Cu(DDTC)2) is monitored at 452 nm. The selectivity of sorbent has been examined by assessing the effect of interfering ions. The proposed method provided linearity ranging from 20.0 to 230.0 mg L-1 (r = 0.998), preconcentration factor of 35.9 and limit of detection of 5.6 mg L-1. Water and food samples were successfully analyzed by proposed method and the accuracy was checked by analysis of certified reference materials of protein and liver of fish.

In this work, chemometric analyses over 31P{¹H} NMR (nuclear magnetic ressonance) spectra of human blood serum permitted to discriminated ischemic stroke patients from health individuals due to changes in the chemical composition of phosphorus-containing compounds. These results indicate that 31P NMR-based metabonomic allowed insights over the mechanism triggered by ischemic stroke.

The purpose of this study was to compare goniometric values for forelimb and hind limbs in clinically healthy Santa Ines sheep with two ages (young and adult). Thirty female Santa Ines sheep were separated into two groups of 15 animals each: Group 1 with 6 to 12-month-old sheep (classified as young), and Group 2 with 3 to 6-year-old sheep (classified as adult). Maximum flexion, maximum extension, and range of motion (ROM) of the shoulder, elbow, carpal, hip, stifle, and tarsal joints, in the right and left limbs were measured with a standard transparent plastic goniometer. The measurements were performed in triplicate by two independent investigators with the sheep in a standing position. There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left sides, between investigators or between groups. In conclusion, in clinically healthy sheep the goniometric values were not influenced by age.
