ABSTRACT Equations express that height-diameter relationships are used to estimate tree heights that were not measured in the plots, as well as to calculate their volumes. In this study, we modelled height for Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex. Maiden stands using nonlinear mixed effect models in Mocuba District, Central Mozambique. Models were tested from 1414 trees measured, in 40 plots with dimensions of 20 x 20 m. Model one (M1) was the best in relation to the others according to the evaluated criteria (R2 = 0.9183; RMSE = 0.558; AIC = -1234.8; BIC = -1224.9). The inclusion of the variables dominant height (h100, m), basal area (G, m2.ha-1) and mean basal area diameter (dg, m) in model 1 (M1) within the scope of mixed effect model structures that involved both fixed and random effect parameters (Model 7) provides better fitting and more precise predictions. For calibration of random effects according to plot, height measurement of at least five trees is required (four dominant trees + one tree randomly selected in plot). Our model is site-specific and its application should therefore be limited to the stands with characteristics that were the basis of this study. Further works on recalibration, validation, and verification of our model using a larger dataset collected from a wider range of species distribution will be more interesting.

SUMMARY: This study aimed at modeling competition indices for individual trees of Araucaria angustifolia in natural forests. A total of 397 objetive trees were sampled in Lages and São Francisco de Paula municipalities. Through a non-linear regression analysis, 22 distance-independent and distance-dependent competition indices were modeled based on the diameter at breast height (d) and relative height (hrel: ratio between the total height of the objetive tree and the maximum potential height estimated for the same diameter). The adjusted equations of the indices according to d of the objetive tree achieved values of R² ≤ 0.546 (Syx% ≥ 15.0). The independent variable hrel improved the estimates, explaining up to 63 % of the variation in the data (Syx% ≥ 14.6). In general, competition indices - which consider in the calculation only the variables d of the objetive tree, d of the competitors, its horizontal distance and eventually the height variable- showed superior performance. Therefore, they are indicated for use in growth modeling of A. angustifolia, due to superior facility of application in natural forests. The developed equations showed to be good representations of the degree of competition at the level of the individual tree of A. angustifolia for the two evaluated sites, measuring only the diameter or including the height of the central tree for more accurate precision. The expansion of research to other sites along the distribution of the species will confirm the application of these equations to their full extent. In addition, this work contributes to the inclusion of competition indices in modeling of individual trees in uneven-aged mixed forests.

RESUMEN: El presente estudio modeló índices de competencia para árboles individuales de Araucaria angustifolia en bosque nativo. Fueron muestreados 397 árboles objetivo en los municipios de Lages y São Francisco de Paula. Mediante análisis de regresión no linear fueron modelados 22 índices de competencia independientes y dependientes de la distancia en función del diámetro a la altura del pecho y altura relativa (razón entre la altura total del árbol objetivo y la máxima altura potencial estimada para el mismo diámetro). Las ecuaciones ajustadas de los índices en función del diámetro del árbol objetivo alcanzaron valores de R² ≤ 0,546 (Syx% ≥ 15,0). La altura relativa mejoró las estimaciones, explicando hasta el 63 % de la variación de datos (Syx% ≥ 14,6). En general, los índices de competencia que consideraron solo los diámetros del árbol objetivo y de los competidores, sus distancias horizontales, y eventualmente la altura, presentaron desempeño superior, siendo así indicados para el modelado del crecimiento de A. Angustifolia, debido a la mayor facilidad de aplicación en bosque nativo. Las ecuaciones desarrolladas representaron bien el grado de competencia a nivel del árbol individual de A. angustifolia para los dos sitios evaluados, midiendo solo el diámetro, o incluyendo también la altura del árbol objetivo para una mayor precisión. La expansión de la investigación a otros sitios a lo largo de la distribución de las especies permitirá confirmar la aplicación de estas ecuaciones en toda su amplitud. Además, este trabajo contribuye a la inclusión de índices de competencia en el modelado de árboles individuales en bosques mixtos disetáneos.

RESUMO A relação entre o número de árvores por hectare e o diâmetro de Pinus taeda L. foi estudada com o objetivo de elaborar um diagrama de manejo da densidade para descrever a trajetória do diâmetro médio sob diferentes regimes de manejo com repercussão biológica e econômica. Os dados de densidade e diâmetro foram obtidos de árvores dispostas em diferentes espaçamentos, em parcelas permanentes, remedidas periodicamente até a idade de 18 anos. O modelo de autodesbaste de Tang foi utilizado para estimar a linha de máxima, usada para delimitar as zonas de concorrência, o que também permitiu determinar o diâmetro médio do povoamento sob diferentes densidades da população, bem como o regime de manejo ótimo para condução do povoamento para um determinado diâmetro objetivo. A análise econômica mostrou um valor presente líquido máximo de 15.587,60 R$/ha e 708,50 R$/ha.ano no regime de manejo com três desbastes, executados aos 9, 13 e 18 anos e com corte final aos 22 anos. Equalizando os horizontes de planejamento em 28 anos esse regime de manejo também se mostrou o de maior eficiência econômica entre os demais, com valor anual equivalente de 1.253,40 R$/ha.ano e uma taxa interna de retorno máxima de 14,83 % a.a.

ABSTRACT The work study the relationship of density and diameter in Pinus taeda L. stand aiming to determining the diagram density management and describe the average-diameter trajectory in different management regimen with biologic and economic repercussion. For that, experimental growth-data measured periodically until 18 years was used. Results demonstrated that the Tang model of density and diameter predicts the maximum line efficiently, using to delimit the concurrence zone that predicted the average diameter among different population densities, as well as determine the objective diameter of the optimal management regimen to conduce the stand. The economic analysis showed a maximum present net value of 15.587,60 R$/ha and 708,50 R$/ha.year at management regimen with three thinning at 9, 13 and 18 years and final cut at 22 years. The comparison of the management regimen after equal-horizons of plan in 28 years, showed the same management regimen with the maximum economic efficiency with annual equivalent value of 1.253,40 R$/ha.year and a maximum internal rate of 14,83 % per year.

RESUMO Este estudo foi desenvolvido com objetivo de modelar o espaço de crescimento para árvores de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze. Um total de 869 araucárias foram amostradas em três municípios no sul do Brasil, sendo 175 árvores com crescimento livre de competição nos municípios de Canoinhas-SC e Lages-SC, e 694 sob influência da competição em floresta natural nos municípios de São Francisco de Paula-RS e Lages-SC. Em cada árvore, foi medido o diâmetro a altura do peito, altura total e raios de copa seguindo as direções dos pontos cardeais. O diâmetro de copa foi determinado dobrando o valor do raio médio.Três modelos foram ajustados e avaliados quanto ao ajuste, precisão e análise gráfica dos resíduos, segundo o município e a condição de crescimento. Na comparação das equações, a análise de covariância não indicou diferença significativa entre nível e inclinação das equações de diâmetro de copa de árvores livres e sob competição nos diferentes locais em que os dados foram amostrados. Uma única equação foi definida para estimar o diâmetro de copa em função do diâmetro a altura do peito para a espécie.

ABSTRACT This study was developed in order to model the growing space for Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze trees. A total of 869 Parana pine trees were sampled in three municipalities in southern Brazil, being 175 trees with free growing of competition in the municipalities of Canoinhas (SC state) and Lages (SC state), and 694 under influence of competition in natural forest in the municipalities of São Francisco de Paula (RS state) and Lages (SC state). In each tree was measured diameter at breast height, total height and crown rays following the directions of the cardinal points. The crown diameter was determined by doubling the value of the average radius of the crown. Three models were fitted and evaluated the fit statistics, accuracy and residual graphical analysis, according to the municipality and growth condition. When comparing the equations, covariance analysis indicated that there is no significant difference between the level and slope of the crown diameter equations of open growth trees and under competition in different places where data were sampled. A single equation was defined to estimate the crown diameter as a function of the diameter at breast height for this species.

RESUMO Este estudo teve por objetivo descrever o efeito da competição nas relações dimensionais de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze. Análise de covariância foi usada para comparar as tendências das relações dimensionais para grupo de árvores crescendo livre em áreas de campo e sob competição na floresta. Árvores crescendo sob competição, quando comparadas às crescendo livre, apresentaram, em média, linhas de regressão com maior intercepto para a altura, altura de inserção de copa, relação altura/diâmetro, avaliando-se um mesmo diâmetro à altura do peito. A diminuição da competição de árvores aumenta o comprimento de copa e reduz a altura do ponto de inserção de copa. A inclusão da variável índice de competição nos modelos melhorou ajuste e precisão das relações dimensionais em árvores de floresta, o que possibilita usar as equações ajustadas na estimativa das dimensões de copa como auxílio às atividades silviculturais de araucária.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the effect of competition in the dimensional relations of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze. Covariance analysis was used to compare tendency dimensional relationship for the group of open grown in fields and under competition in the forest. Trees growing under competition when compared to those with open grown presented, on average, regression lines with superior intercept for height, height of crown insertion point, height/diameter ratio, when evaluating the same diameter at breast height. Decreased tree competition increases the crown length and reduces height of crown insertion point. The inclusion of variable competition index in models improved fit and accuracy of dimensional relations in forest trees, which allows to use the equations fitted to estimate the crown dimensions as assistance for silvicultural activities of araucaria.

The growth of individual trees can be simulated by multiplying a function that describes the potential by another modifier, the "modifying-potential". Modeling of the potential function for trees growing without competition determines the limit of optimum growth to species, while a modifying function sets the decrease component taking in consideration the influence of environmental factors. Thus, the aim of the study was to adjust the modifier function to describe the periodic increment in the basal area of Araucaria angustifolia trees in sites with Araucaria Forest in southern Brazil. For this, we sampled 397 individual trees. Dendrometric and morphometric variables, competition indices and increment in diameter with the chronology of widths of the growth ring were measured. Periodic increment in basal area was described by a logarithmic function that explained 57 % of variance and correlated with the diameter at the beginning of the period, height, variable of crown size and competition indices. Results indicate that the modifier function can be used accurately to explain changes in growth and spatial and temporal structure of the species in the Araucaria Forest.

El crecimiento de los árboles individuales se puede simular multiplicando una función que describe su potencial por otra modificadora "potencial-modificadora". El modelado de la función potencial para árboles creciendo sin competencia determina el límite de crecimiento óptimo para una especie, mientras que la función modificadora establece el componente de descenso teniendo en cuenta la influencia de factores ambientales. Así, el objetivo del estudio fue ajustar la función modificadora para describir el incremento periódico en el área basal de árboles de Araucaria angustifolia en sitios de bosques con araucaria en el sur de Brasil. Para eso, se tomaron muestras de 397 árboles individuales y se midieron sus variables dendrométricas, morfométricas, sus índices de competencia y su incremento en diámetro con la cronología de los anchos de anillos de crecimiento. El incremento periódico en el área basal fue descripto por una función logarítmica que explicó el 57 % de la varianza y se correlaciona con el diámetro al inicio del periodo, altura, variable de dimensión de la copa y el índice de la competencia. Los resultados indican que se puede utilizar la función modificadora con precisión para explicar los cambios en el crecimiento, en la estructura espacial y temporal de la especie en el bosque de araucaria.

RESUMO A presente pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de estudar e modelar o efeito dos desbastes pré-comerciais e das podas no crescimento diamétrico, em um povoamento de Pinus taeda L. de 15 anos de idade, no Nordeste da Argentina. O estudo localizou-se em solo vermelho argiloso profundo com um delineamento sistemático de faixas para intensidades de desbastes e subfaixas para intensidades de podas. Os tratamentos de desbaste, realizados aos 3 anos de idade, foram: 1666 (sem desbaste); 833; 416 e 208 árvores ha-1. As podas foram realizadas a partir dos 3 anos e com frequência anual por 2, 3 ou 4 anos consecutivos, com remoção de 30, 50 e 70% da copa viva, respectivamente. O modelo geral obtido por regressão linear permitiu estimar o diâmetro da árvore de área basal média (dg) em função da idade com boa precisão (desvio médio absoluto em percentagem igual a 5.71), sendo as variáveis: árvores remanescentes, copa remanescente e número de podas consideradas nos modelos estimadores dos coeficientes da função geral. Aos 15 anos de idade, os diâmetros variaram entre 25.6 e 41.5 cm, para as densidades de 1666 e 208 árvores ha-1, respectivamente, sem poda. O crescimento do dg foi afetado negativamente pelas podas e positivamente pelos desbastes.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to study and to model the effect of pre-commercial thinning and pruning on diameter growth, on a 15th year old stand of Pinus taeda L. in northeastern Argentina. The study was established in a deep red clay soil, with a systematic design of blocks for thinning intensity and sub-blocks for pruning intensity. The thinning treatments, performed at 3 year old were: 1666 (without thinning); 833; 416 and 208 trees ha-1. The pruning were done annually, starting at 3 year old, and applied by 2, 3 or 4 consecutive years removing 30, 50 and 70 % of the living crown, respectively. The general model obtained by linear regression allowed to estimate, with good precision (mean absolute deviation as a percentage equal to 5.71), the quadratic mean diameter (QMD) in function of age. The variable remnant trees, remnant crown, and number of prunings were considered to estimate the general function coefficients. At 15 year old, the QMD varied from 25.6 to 41.5 cm to 1666 and 208 trees ha-,1 respectively, without pruning. The QMD growth was negatively affected by pruning and positively affected by thinning.

RESUMO Este trabalho foi concebido com os objetivos de determinar matematicamente os pontos de mudança da forma do fuste (pmf), o número de mudanças na forma geométrica, ajustar e comparar modelos matemáticos para estimar os diâmetros ao longo do fuste de Pinus taeda L. Os dados foram amostrados em árvores que cresceram em povoamento implantado em espaçamento de 2,50 x 2,50 m e manejado com dois desbastes, aos 9 e 14 anos, e corte final aos 30 anos pertencentes à Klabin S.A., em Telêmaco Borba, estado do Paraná. Quarenta árvores das classes médias e dominantes foram abatidas e cubadas pelo Método de Smalian, nas posições fixas de 0,10 m; 0,30 m; 0,80 m; 1,30 m; e após em comprimentos de 1 em 1 m, até a altura total. Na parte relativa à copa, os pontos de medição foram deslocados para os entrenós e a seguir foram retiradas fatias para análise de tronco, resultando, quando considerada a idade, em conjunto de dados relativos a 649 árvores com idades entre 8 a 30 anos, das quais foram selecionadas aleatoriamente, 50 árvores em cada classe de pmf para modelagem. As árvores foram agrupadas segundo os pmf de acordo com as quantidades de pontos definidos pela segunda derivada do polinômio do 5° ajustado para cada árvore. Com base nas estatísticas de ajuste e precisão na análise gráfica dos resíduos, nas estatísticas viés (v), média das diferenças (md) e desvio padrão das diferenças (dpd) foi selecionado o Polinômio de quinto grau para estimar os diâmetros em alturas relativas do tronco e, alternativamente, o modelo de Garay, seguido do modelo de Max e Burkhart com dois ou modificado para um segmento conforme o número de pmf definidos na derivada.

ABSTRACT This work was planned to describe the change point of stem taper (pmf), the number of geometric change points, adjust and compare mathematical models to predict diameters along of stem of Pinus taeda L. The data sampled were measured on trees growing in stands implanted with spacement of 2,50 x 2,50m, thinned at 9 and 14 years and final cut at 30 years old, from Klabin S.A., Telêmaco Borba, Paraná state, Brazil. Fourty trees between the average and dominant trees were cut and measured with Smalian method at the positions 0,10m; 0,30m; 0,80m; 1,30m; and from them at each 1m to the top. At crown part the measured point were moved among knot. After that, at each measured point, slices to stem analysis were cut. If considered the age, a group of 649 trees between 8 to 30 years old resulted of the analysis. From this group, 50 trees were selected at random of each pmf class to modeling. The trees were grouped in pmf by the number of change point of stem shape defined by the second derivative of the polynomial 5th. Degree 5th grad Polinon adjusted for each tree. The statistics of adjustment and precision, residuals graphics, bias (v), average difference (md), and difference of standard deviation (dpd) showed as better model the polynomial 5th. degree to predict the diameter at relative height of stem, and alternatively the Garay model and the Max-Burkhart with two segments or modify to one segment according to the number of pmf calculated by the derivative.

RESUMO A relação entre a altura-diâmetro são usualmente empregadas com intuito de obter inventários florestais menos custosos e para avaliar o crescimento e a produção. Este estudo teve como objetivo desenvolver modelos de altura-diâmetro para árvores individuais de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze para diferentes locais e condições de crescimento no Sul do Brasil. Os dados incluem localização de pelo menos um terço da distribuição geográfica natural da espécie. Foi utilizado o modelo de Michailoff e a comparação das tendências de altura-diâmetro por meio de métodos analíticos. O modelo mostrou de forma geral boa precisão e acurácia. Árvores que crescem em condições de floresta tem uma altura maior assintótica, alcançando em diâmetros menores do que as árvores crescendo livre de competição. Diferentes regiões tem contrastantes tendência altura-diâmetro indicando potencial local, especialmente para florestas naturais. A assíntota do modelo de altura das árvores apresentou correlação com a altitude local e precipitação média anual. Este estudo representa uma fonte de parâmetros das relações altura-diâmetro em uma ampla extensão geográfica, para uma espécie com alto valor cultural e potencial madeireiro no Sul do Brasil.

ABSTRACT Height-diameter relationships are used in order to make forest inventories less expensive and to assess growth and yield. This study aimed to develop height-diameter models for individual trees of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze for different locations and growth conditions in Southern Brazil. Our data include locations of at least one third of this species natural geographical distribution. We used Michailoff’s model, and compared height-diameter tendency through analytical methods. The model showed good overall precision and accuracy. Trees growing in forest conditions had a higher asymptotic height, and reached it at smaller diameters than open-grown trees. Different regions had contrasting height-diameter tendency indicating site potential, especially for natural forests. Individual tree asymptotic height was correlated with site altitude and mean annual precipitation. This study represents a source of parameters for height-diameter relationships in a large geographical span, for a species with high cultural and timber value in Southern Brazil.

RESUMO Funções de afilamento permitem determinar classes de dimensão e volumes das árvores com aplicação direta no planejamento das atividades técnicas e econômicas da floresta. Com esse propósito, os objetivos do presente estudo foram descrever o afilamento do fuste de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze na porção compreendida entre o nível do solo e a inserção da copa de árvores de remanescente florestal nativo, bem como ajustar modelo de regressão para a relação altura/DAP, para o diâmetro na inserção da copa sobre o DAP e demonstrar a aplicação das funções com a confecção de uma tabela de sortimentos de madeira. Oitenta e cinco árvores tiveram medidas seus diâmetros e alturas relativas pelo método de cubagem rigorosa de Hohenadl, assim como o diâmetro na inserção da copa com o Criterion RD 1000. Os modelos de afilamento ajustados por regressão foram o polinômio do 5º grau, Kozak (1988), Lee et al. (2003) e Sharma e Zhang (2004). O coeficiente de determinação ajustado (R²aj), o erro padrão da estimativa em porcentagem (Syx%) e a análise gráfica entre valores estimados e observados foram as estatísticas usadas para avaliar o ajuste e a precisão dos modelos. O modelo da relação altura/DAP e do diâmetro no ponto de inserção da copa alcançaram boas estatísticas de ajuste e precisão, permitindo sua aplicação em inventários florestais e no planejamento da produção florestal. A flexibilidade e a eficiência do modelo de Kozak (1988) em predizer diâmetros e volumes até o ponto de inserção da copa favorecem o uso e obtenção de sortimentos de madeira de araucária.

ABSTRACT Taper functions allow determining size classes and volumes of trees with direct application in the planning of technical and economic forest activities. For this purpose, the aim of this study was to describe the taper of the trunk of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze in the portion between the ground level and the insertion of the crown of individuals in remnant of native forest. Also tried to fit the regression model to represent relations height/DBH, diameter at the insertion of the crown in function DBH and the development of assortment timber table. Eighty-five trees were measured their diameters and heights relatives using Hohenadl cubed method and the diameter of the insertion crown with Criterion RD 1000 instrument. The taper models were adjusted by regression analysis using polynomial of the 5th degree, Kozak (1988), Lee et al. (2003) and Sharma and Zhang (2004). The adjusted coefficient of determination (R²aj), the standard error of estimate in percentage (Syx%) and graphical analysis between estimated values in function of observed were used statistics to evaluate the quality of fit and models precision. The model height/DBH and diameter at the insertion point of the crown evidence good fit statistical and precision, allowing its application in activities intended at planning and forest inventories. The flexibility and efficiency of Kozak (1988) model in predicting diameters and volumes until the crown insertion point favors the use and obtain timber assortments of araucaria.

As relações morfométrias permitem descrever dimensões das árvores sem o prévio conhecimento da idade, auxilia no planejamento florestal e na execução de atividades silviculturais, principalmente quando se deseja tornar sustentável o uso das florestas. Com esse propósito, o objetivo do presente estudo foi modelar e comparar as relações morfométricas de árvores de araucária que crescem em posição social dominante, codominante e dominada em remanescente florestal nativo, localizado no município de Lages - SC. Um total de 294 árvores distribuídas em classes de DAP foi selecionado intencionalmente no interior da floresta. De cada árvore foi medido o DAP, altura total, altura do fuste, diâmetro de copa sob oito raios, bem como a classificação quanto à posição social. Modelos de regressão linear simples e múltipla foram empregados para descrever a relação h/d, proporção de copa e formal de copa em função do diâmetro a altura do peito na forma simples, quadrática, cúbica, inversa e logarítmica. A análise de covariância com variáveis dummy para descrever a posição social foram usadas para testar o paralelismo e inclinação das regressões indicando a necessidade ou não do emprego de regressões independentes. Os resultados indicaram que, mesmo com grande variabilidade na forma e dimensão das copas decorrente do processo de crescimento e de competição, as relações morfométricas de araucária podem ser estimadas com precisão por modelos de regressão. A relação h/d, proporção de copa e formal de copa pode ser descrita por modelo individual para posição social dominante, codominante e dominada, ou alternativamente por modelo único, com a utilização de variáveis dummy que diferenciam o estrato dominado no modelo de relação h/d e de formal de copa. Para a proporção de copa existe diferença de dimensões das árvores dos três estratos sociais, sendo necessário utilizar uma variável de classificação dummy para cada caso ou os modelos individuais.

The morphometric relations allow describing dimensions of trees without prior knowledge of the age, it help the forest planning and implementation of silvicultural treatments, especially when needs to make sustainable use of forests. For this purpose, the aim of this study was to model and comparising the morphometric relations araucaria trees in social position dominant, codominant and dominated in native forest remnant, located in Lages, SC. A total of 294 trees distributed in dbh classes were intentionally selected inside of forest. In each tree was measured dbh, total height, bole height, crown diameter by eight radius, as well as the classification of social position. Simple and multiple linear regression models were used to describe the relation h/d, the proportion of the crown and formal crown in function of diameter at breast height with simple transformation, quadratic, cubic, inverse and logarithmic form. The analysis of covariance with dummy variables were used to describe the social position and tested the parallelism and slope of regression indicating need or not of the use independent regressions. The results indicated that even with great variability in the shape and size of the crown due to growth and competition process, the morphometric relations of araucaria can be accurately estimated by regression models. The relation h/d, proportion of the crown and formal crown can be described by individual model for social position dominant, codominant and dominant, or alternatively a single model with the use of dummy variables that differentiate trees group dominated for the relation h/d and formal crown. The proportion of crown presented difference in dimensions of the trees, being necessary to use dummy variable for each social stratus or use the individual models.

No presente trabalho foi estudado o efeito do espaçamento inicial sobre a relação entre a densidade de árvores por hectare e o diâmetro médio em povoamentos monoclonais de Eucalyptus saligna Smith. Os dados foram obtidos em povoamentos de densidade completa e altamente estocados, monitorados anualmente em parcelas permanentes até os 18 anos. Para isto, foram testados os modelos de densidade de árvores por hectare pelo diâmetro médio, indicado o modelo de autodesbaste de Tang como o mais preciso, para gerar as estimativas dos valores de densidade, apresentando um coeficiente de determinação ajustado de 0,85, erro padrão da estimativa baixo igual a 0,1026, coeficiente de variação igual a 1,39 %, uma tendência mínima igual a -0,0534 e eficiência elevada igual a 0,3903. O autodesbaste ocorre numa dimensão de diâmetro médio diretamente proporcional à densidade inicial de árvores por hectare do plantio. Quanto maior o espaçamento inicial, maior é o diâmetro médio no momento do início do autodesbaste na população. O coeficiente angular da equação de densidade pelo diâmetro foi igual a 1,0124, divergente do valor indicado para espécies florestais na lei de autodesbaste.

In the present study the effect of initial spacing on relationship between the density of trees per hectare and the average diameter in monoclonal stands of Eucalyptus saligna were investigated. The data used were collected from full stocked stands and highly stored annually, monitored until 18 years old using permanent plots. For that, the density model of trees per hectare by diameter was tested and the self-thinning model of Tang was indicated as the most accurate one and provided great performance statistics, with a coefficient of determination equal to 0.85, lower standard error equal to 0.1026, low coefficient of variation equal to 1.39%, a minimal tendency equal to -0.0534 and high-efficiency equal to 0.3903. The self-thinning occurs in a diameter directly proportional to the initial density of trees per hectare of plantation. As great is the initial spacing greater is the mean diameter in the moment of initiation of self-thinning of the population. The slope of the equation of density and diameter was equal to 1.0124 diverging from the value indicated for forest species in the law of self-thinning.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a relação do diâmetro médio e da área basal no momento do autodesbaste, o crescimento diamétrico e a ocorrência do autodesbaste, o momento de autodesbaste com base na proporção de diâmetro-área basal, a taxa de autodesbaste comparando-a com a lei da potência -3/2 em povoamentos de Pinus taeda L., em vários espaçamentos, manejado em densidade completa. O modelo de Tang foi empregado relacionando o número de árvores por hectare com o diâmetro médio, a partir de dados de parcelas permanentes, medidas anualmente até os 18 anos em experimento de espaçamento. O modelo de autodesbaste mostrou ótima precisão e elevada eficiência, porém, apresentou coeficiente angular de -1,65 com inclinação diferente da preconizada na lei de autodesbaste de -3/2. No momento da ocorrência do autodesbaste, as árvores atingiram diâmetros 14 e 17 cm, nos espaçamento de 2 x 2 e 3 x 2 m, com áreas basais de 38,8 e 47,5 m2/ha, respectivamente. Em todos os espaçamentos a área basal máxima foi de 78 m2/ha, aos 18 anos de idade, apresentando ainda tendência ascendente. Nesses espaçamentos, o quociente do diâmetro pela área basal no momento de ocorrência do autodesbaste foram 0,36 e 0,37, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to study the relationship of the ratio of mean diameter and basal area at the self-thinning moment; the diameter tree growth; the occurrence and moment of self-thinning using the diameter-area proportion and the rate of self-thinning, comparing it to the law of the -3/2 power in stands of Pinus taeda L.. The data was collected from permanent plots experiment installed into a Pinus taeda L. stand and measured annually until 18 years-old with different spacing managed with complete density. The Tang model was used in order to relate the density of trees with the mean diameter. The self-thinning model showed precision and high efficiency. However, it showed a different slope coefficient of -1.65 that stressed from the self-thinning law of -3/2. At the self-thinning moment, the trees reached a diameter of 14 and 17 cm at the space of 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 with basal area of 38.8 and 47.5 m2/ha, respectively. In all spacing the maximum basal area was 78 m2/ha at 18 years old showing upward trend. In that spacing the diameter and basal area ratio at the moment of occurrence of self-thinning was 0.36 and 0.37, respectively.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a composição florística, a estrutura horizontal e vertical, bem como os padrões de distribuição espacial do componente arbóreo e agrupamento de espécies em uma amostra de Estepe Estacional Savanícola localizada no Parque do Espinilho, Barra do Quaraí - RS. Para o levantamento florístico e análise fitossociológica foi instalada, em uma área de ocorrência de Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco, uma unidade permanente de 4 ha (200 x 200 m), onde todos os indivíduos com circunferência (C) ≥ 15,7 cm a 30 cm do nível do solo foram amostrados e medidas a circunferência e altura total. Foram encontrados 145 indivíduos/ha, distribuídos em 11 espécies, 10 gêneros e 8 famílias, com área basal de 4,06 m²/ha. A vegetação arbórea apresentou Índice de Diversidade de Shannon estimado em 1,86, sendo que as espécies com os maiores valores de importância foram Prosopis nigra (25,86%), Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco (24,57%), Prosopis affinis (24,30%) e Vachellia caven (10,51%), representando 85,26% do total. A vegetação arbórea apresenta dois estratos bem definidos, o inferior com 93,3% das árvores e o superior com apenas 6,7% do total de árvores amostradas. Neste a espécie Aspidosperma quebracho- blanco predomina com 70,0% das árvores. Com relação ao padrão de distribuição espacial das espécies, Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco apresentou tendência ao agrupamento, de acordo com o Índice de Payandeh, enquanto que as demais espécies apresentaram-se agrupadas. Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco e Prosopis nigra tendem a ocorrer associadas, enquanto Prosopis affinis e Vachellia caven formam grupos individuais. A associação estudada constitui-se de uma formação de espécies única no Brasil, apresentando questão de raridade em termos de composição de espécies e estrutura.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to evaluate the floristic composition, the horizontal and vertical structures, as well as the spatial distribution patterns of the tree component in a Steppe Savanna Park located at 'Parque do Espinilho', in Barra do Quaraí, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Floristic composition and phyto-sociological analysis were carried out in a four (04) ha permanent plot (40 000 m²), where all individuals which circumference (C) was ≥ 15.7 cm, measured 30 cm from the ground, were sampled and had their circumference and total height measured. A mean of 145 individuals/ha was found, distributed in 11 species, 10 genera and eight (08) families, with basal area of 4.06 m²/ha. The Shannon Diversity Index (H') for the tree vegetation was 1.86, and the species with the highest importance values were Prosopis nigra (25.86%), Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco (24.57%), Prosopis affinis (24.30%) and Vachellia caven (10.51%), representing 85.26% of the total. The tree vegetation has two strata, the lower one with 93.3% of the trees and the upper one with only 6.7% of total. The species Aspidosperma quebracho- blanco dominated with 70.0% of trees in this stratum. Regarding the spatial distribution pattern of the species, Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco presented a grouped tendency, whereas the other ones were grouped. The savannah steppe park studied is mainly characterized by the occurrence of Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco, Prosopis nigra, Prosopis affinis and Vachellia caven, constituting a unique combination of species in Brazil, presenting question of rarity in terms of species composition and structure.

RESUMO O crescimento da copa é uma variável pouco conhecida no campo florestal. Esta estrutura fotossintética tão importante para o crescimento da árvore encontra-se em um nível de difícil acesso para o manejador florestal e, portanto, pouco se conhece sobre seu desenvolvimento. Assim, o objetivo dessa pesquisa foi modelar o alongamento anual da copa utilizando como variável independente o incremento corrente anual em diâmetro do tronco de Cedrela fissilis. Utilizando 22 árvores singulares determinou-se o alongamento anual da copa e o incremento corrente anual em diâmetro no período de oito anos. Demonstrou-se que o desenvolvimento da copa está relacionado com o incremento diamétrico (r=0,53; p<0,0001), entretanto, para estimar o alongamento anual da copa com maior precisão, o modelo linear misto também incluiu o diâmetro a altura do peito e a altura comercial, que explicou 70% da variação total do alongamento do galho por classe de altura total.

ABSTRACT The annual crown growth is a little known variable in the forestry field. This important photosynthetic structure for tree growth is in a difficult level-access to the forester and therefore, a little knowing about its development. Then, the objective of this research was to model the annual crown growth using as independent variable the diameter at breast height increment of Cedrela fissilis. By using 22 singular ones, we determined the annual crown growth and the current annual diameter increment for the period of eight years. We demonstrated that the crown development are related with the diameter increment (r=0.53; p<0.0001). However, to predict the annual crown elongation with more precision, the linear mixed model also included the diameter at breast height and the commercial height explaining 70% of the total variation in the crown elongation by total height class.
