ABSTRACT Equations express that height-diameter relationships are used to estimate tree heights that were not measured in the plots, as well as to calculate their volumes. In this study, we modelled height for Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex. Maiden stands using nonlinear mixed effect models in Mocuba District, Central Mozambique. Models were tested from 1414 trees measured, in 40 plots with dimensions of 20 x 20 m. Model one (M1) was the best in relation to the others according to the evaluated criteria (R2 = 0.9183; RMSE = 0.558; AIC = -1234.8; BIC = -1224.9). The inclusion of the variables dominant height (h100, m), basal area (G, m2.ha-1) and mean basal area diameter (dg, m) in model 1 (M1) within the scope of mixed effect model structures that involved both fixed and random effect parameters (Model 7) provides better fitting and more precise predictions. For calibration of random effects according to plot, height measurement of at least five trees is required (four dominant trees + one tree randomly selected in plot). Our model is site-specific and its application should therefore be limited to the stands with characteristics that were the basis of this study. Further works on recalibration, validation, and verification of our model using a larger dataset collected from a wider range of species distribution will be more interesting.

RESUMO A liberação de árvores de interesse por meio do corte de árvores competidoras, videiras lenhosas e outras lianas é uma prática silvicultural muito importante ao manejo florestal de espécies de interesse comercial presentes em florestas secundárias. Diante disso, nós objetivamos conhecer a influência na estabilidade mecânica e qual o limite dimensional de altura que as plantas de C. canjerana devem possuir para que não haja problemas de flambagem do fuste após a liberação. Para isto, foi realizada a liberação de 105 plantas da espécie, que tiveram seu diâmetro e altura medidos antes e anualmente por três anos após a aplicação do tratamento. Baseado na Teoria do Design Mecânico, foi gerado um modelo de regressão para conhecer o modo de alocação de diâmetro e altura nas plantas analisadas. O diâmetro mínimo para flambagem e o fator de segurança foram calculados para todas as plantas. A liberação resultou na flambagem do fuste de cinco árvores, todas com baixo fator de segurança, ou seja, com diâmetro real menor que o diâmetro mínimo para suportar o peso de sua altura. De acordo com o modelo de regressão gerado, a espécie cresce proporcionalmente em diâmetro e altura. Entretanto, a liberação influenciou a estabilidade mecânica das plantas liberadas, fazendo com que um incremento maior em diâmetro fosse necessário para que as plantas permanecessem em pé. Os resultados demonstram que as dimensões das árvores a serem liberadas devem ser consideradas para evitar problemas de flambagem do fuste após a aplicação do tratamento.

ABSTRACT The liberation of trees of interest by cutting competing trees, woody vines and other lianas is a very important silvicultural practice in the management of forest species of interest present in secondary forests. Thus, we aimed to know the influence of the liberation on the mechanical stability and what dimensional height limit of C. canjerana (Vell.) Mart. saplings must have so that there is no problem of buckling of the stem after the liberation. To this end, the liberation of 105 plants of the species was carried out and the diameter and height were measured before and annually for three years after the application of the treatment. Based on the Mechanical Design Theory, a regression model was generated to know to allocation mode of the diameter and height in the analized plants. The minimum diameter for buckling and the safety factor for all trees were calculated. The liberation resulted in the buckling of the stem of five trees, all below the safety limit, that is, with a real diameter smaller than the minimum diameter to support the weight of its height. According to the regression model generated the species grows proportionally in diameter and height. However, the liberation influenced the mechanical stability of the plants liberated, making a greater increment in diameter necessary so that the trees remained standing. The results demonstrate that the dimensions of the trees to be liberated should be considered in order to avoid problems of buckling of the stem after the treatment.

RESUMO Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de verificar a plasticidade dos folíolos de plantas jovens de Cabralea canjerana e sua capacidade de adaptação a diferentes ambientes luminosos por meio de características morfológicas e fisiológicas. Para isto, foram selecionadas 12 plantas de fragmento de Floresta Estacional Decidual secundário, sendo seis crescendo sob dossel e seis a pleno sol. As árvores foram classificadas conforme sua posição sociológica em emergentes e dominadas. As folhas foram classificadas em apicais, intermediárias e basais de acordo com a sua posição na copa. Foram mensuradas as variáveis número total de folhas, largura, comprimento, espessura, área foliar e massa seca dos folíolos; teor de clorofilas a e b e carotenoides. Folíolos de árvores a pleno sol, emergentes e da posição superior da copa, considerados os mais expostos a luminosidade, apresentaram características xeromórficas como redução do tamanho do folíolo, maior espessura do limbo, menor área foliar e menor teor de clorofila b. A semelhança na massa seca e no conteúdo de pigmentos evidenciam que a atividade fotossintética das plantas de C. canjerana analisadas não está sendo prejudicada pelas diferentes condições do ambiente, o que demonstra a plasticidade da espécie e sua capacidade de desenvolvimento em diversas condições de luminosidade.

ABSTRACT This work was carried out to verify the plasticity of saplings of Cabralea canjerana plants and their capacity to adapt to different light environments by means of morphological and physiological characteristics. For this, 12 plants of a secondary Deciduous Seasonal Forest fragment were selected, six growing under canopy and six in full sun. Trees were classified according to their sociological position as emergent and dominated. The leaves were classified as apical, intermediate and basal according to their position in the canopy. The variables measured were: total number of leaves, width, length, thickness, leaf area and dry mass of leaflets; content of chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids. Emergent leaflets of the upper position of the canopy in full sun, which are considered the most exposed to luminosity, presented xeromorphic characteristics such as leaflet size reduction, greater limbus thickness, smaller leaf area and lower content of chlorophyll b. The similarity in the dry mass and pigment content demonstrates that the photosynthetic activity of the C. canjerana plants analyzed is not being affected by the different conditions of the environment, which demonstrates the plasticity of the species and its capacity of development in several light conditions.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo formular modelos de incremento diâmetrico para árvores individuais de Araucaria angustifolia. Foram utilizadas medições de 262 indivíduos de araucária amostrados nas parcelas permanentes do Projeto Ecológico de Longa Duração - “Conservação e Manejo Sustentável de Ecossistemas Florestais - Bioma Araucária e suas Transições” (PELD - CNPq). Utilizando análise de correlação, covariância e regressão, foram ajustados modelos de incremento, estratificados em função da classe de diâmetro, variável de maior correlação com o incremento em diâmetro. Foi utilizado o incremento periódico anual, calculado com base no incremento em diâmetro dos indivíduos no período analisado. Os modelos resultaram em boas estimativas do incremento, no entanto, apresentaram resíduos com forte tendência.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to develop diameter increment models for individual trees of Araucaria angustifolia. Were used measurements of 262 araucaria individuals sampled in the permanent plots of the Project PELD - CNPq. Using correlation analysis, covariance and regression, increment models were adjusted, stratified by diameter class, variable with the highest correlation with the increase in diameter. We used the annual periodic increment, calculated based on the diameter increment of the individuals in the analyzed period. Models resulted in good estimates of the increase, however, showed wastes with a strong tendency.

RESUMO Este estudo foi desenvolvido com objetivo de modelar o espaço de crescimento para árvores de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze. Um total de 869 araucárias foram amostradas em três municípios no sul do Brasil, sendo 175 árvores com crescimento livre de competição nos municípios de Canoinhas-SC e Lages-SC, e 694 sob influência da competição em floresta natural nos municípios de São Francisco de Paula-RS e Lages-SC. Em cada árvore, foi medido o diâmetro a altura do peito, altura total e raios de copa seguindo as direções dos pontos cardeais. O diâmetro de copa foi determinado dobrando o valor do raio médio.Três modelos foram ajustados e avaliados quanto ao ajuste, precisão e análise gráfica dos resíduos, segundo o município e a condição de crescimento. Na comparação das equações, a análise de covariância não indicou diferença significativa entre nível e inclinação das equações de diâmetro de copa de árvores livres e sob competição nos diferentes locais em que os dados foram amostrados. Uma única equação foi definida para estimar o diâmetro de copa em função do diâmetro a altura do peito para a espécie.

ABSTRACT This study was developed in order to model the growing space for Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze trees. A total of 869 Parana pine trees were sampled in three municipalities in southern Brazil, being 175 trees with free growing of competition in the municipalities of Canoinhas (SC state) and Lages (SC state), and 694 under influence of competition in natural forest in the municipalities of São Francisco de Paula (RS state) and Lages (SC state). In each tree was measured diameter at breast height, total height and crown rays following the directions of the cardinal points. The crown diameter was determined by doubling the value of the average radius of the crown. Three models were fitted and evaluated the fit statistics, accuracy and residual graphical analysis, according to the municipality and growth condition. When comparing the equations, covariance analysis indicated that there is no significant difference between the level and slope of the crown diameter equations of open growth trees and under competition in different places where data were sampled. A single equation was defined to estimate the crown diameter as a function of the diameter at breast height for this species.

RESUMO A conversão de uma área de vegetação natural para uma área de cultivo associada às mudanças na cobertura vegetal podem acarretar modificações em algumas propriedades do solo, interferindo em sua qualidade. Dessa forma, o trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar as alterações ocorridas nas propriedades físicas e químicas de um solo arenoso sob vegetação de campo nativo após a implantação de povoamentos de Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden, em diferentes densidades populacionais. O trabalho foi realizado na região da Campanha Gaúcha, município de São Francisco de Assis-RS. Foi instalado um experimento implantado com Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden sobre campo nativo, nos espaçamentos 3,50 m x 3,50 m; 3,50 m x 1,75 m; 1,75 m x 1,75 m e 1,75 m x 0,87 m, em um Argissolo Vermelho Distrófico. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Foram coletadas, em cada unidade experimental, amostras de solo nas profundidades de 0,00-0,10 m; 0,10-0,20 m e 0,20-0,40 m antes e após 12 meses da implantação. As propriedades físicas do solo avaliadas foram densidade, porosidade total, macroporosidade, microporosidade do solo e distribuição do tamanho dos agregados estáveis em água. As propriedades químicas determinadas foram: pH H2O, alumínio (Al), cálcio (Ca), magnésio (Mg), e potássio (K) trocáveis, fósforo disponível (P), nitrogênio total (N) e carbono orgânico total (C). Ocorreram alterações significativas na macro e microporosidade, na porcentagem dos agregados pertencentes à classe de tamanho de 8,00-4,75 mm e no DMG devido às práticas de preparo do solo e do manejo do povoamento no período inicial. Para as propriedades químicas do solo, houve aumento no pH e nos níveis de Ca no solo após 12 meses devido ao efeito da adubação aplicada.

ABSTRACT The conversion of natural vegetation to cultivated areas as well as changes in vegetation cover can lead to changes in some soil properties, interfering on their quality. Such changes occur in the soil structure and in the chemical properties. Therefore, the study has the objective to evaluate the changes in the physical and chemical properties of an Ultisol after afforestation of Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden planted in different spacing resulting in several plant populations. The study was accomplished in ‘Campanha Gaúcha’ region, in São Francisco de Assis city, Rio Grande do Sul state (RS). It was carried out an experiment planted with Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden planted on Ultisol with native grass. The plant spacings used were: 3,50 m x 3,50 m; 3,50 m x 1,75 m; 1,75 m 1,75 m and 1,75 m x 0,87 m. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replicates. It was collected soil samples were taken before the Eucalyptus planting and after twelve months, and layers of 0,00-0,10 m; 0,10-0,20 m and 0,20-0,40 m. The soil physical properties measured were: bulk density, total, macro and microporosity and wet aggregate size distribution. The soil chemical measured were: water pH, Al+++, Ca++, Mg++, K+, available P, N and C. There were change in the macro and microporosity, in the percentage of stable aggregates of size class 8,00-4,75 mm and DMG because to soil tillage and forest management. For the chemical properties there were increase in the pH and Ca content in the soil after twelve months by effect to fertilization applied.

RESUMO A competência ao enraizamento adventício é essencial para viabilizar o resgate vegetativo de plantas adultas de erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.). Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar plantas adultas de erva-mate para a competência ao enraizamento adventício e estudar o resgate destas plantas, por estaquia de brotações epicórmicas, induzidas em diferentes posições do tronco. Sete plantas adultas foram avaliadas quanto à porcentagem de sobrevivência e enraizamento das estacas, oriundas de brotações induzidas pelo anelamento do tronco. Duas plantas que apresentaram a maior competência ao enraizamento foram submetidas à poda da parte aérea e ao anelamento da base, para estimular novas brotações epicórmicas e avaliar o efeito da posição de coleta no enraizamento das estacas. O resgate por estaquia, das mesmas plantas, também foi estudado em brotações epicórmicas induzidas pela decepa. As brotações foram seccionadas em estacas de gema única, tratadas ou não com 3.000 mg L-1 de ácido indolbutirico e mantidas em câmara úmida por 60 dias. As estacas foram avaliadas quanto as porcentagens de sobrevivência e enraizamento. Concluiu-se que é possível resgatar plantas adultas de erva-mate por estaquia de brotações epicórmicas induzidas por poda, anelamento ou decepa. Plantas adultas de erva-mate diferem quanto a competência ao enraizamento adventício das estacas e também quanto a posição de coleta das brotações epicórmicas.

ABSTRACT The competence of adult plants of mate (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) to undergo adventitious rooting is essential to their vegetative rescue by cuttings. This study aimed to evaluate the adventitious rooting competence of adult mate plants, and then rescue these plants by making cuttings from epicormic shoots induced in different trunk positions. The percent survival and rooting of cuttings from epicormic shoots induced by girdling in seven adult plants were evaluated. The two stock plants whose cuttings had the highest rooting competence were further pruned and girdled to evaluate the effect of the position of epicormic shoots on their adventitious rooting competence. The potential success of rescuing of the same adult plants was also studied with cuttings of epicormic shoots induced by coppicing. The shoots were sectioned in single-bud cuttings, either treated with 3,000 mg L-1 indolebutyric acid or untreated, and then cultivated in a humid chamber for 60 days, and then the percent survival and rooting of cuttings was evaluated. In conclusion, we found that it is possible to rescue adult mate plants by cuttings from epicormic shoots induced by pruning, girdling, or coppicing. The adventitious rooting competence of cuttings differs among adult mate plants, and depends on the position of the epicormic shoots on the trunk from which epicormic shoots are collected.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a possibilidade de resgatar árvores adultas por estaquia de brotos epicórmicos de rebrota pós-fogo. Foram estudadas a erva-mate ( Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) e a canjerana ( Cabralea canjerana Vell. Mart.), que são espécies nativas de difícil propagação por sementes e de relevante importância econômica e ecológica. O material vegetativo utilizado para o preparo das estacas foi constituído de brotos, provenientes da rebrota da diferenciação dos tecidos de gemas do colo de árvores matrizes com, aproximadamente, 20 anos de idade. Para a erva-mate, estacas de gema única foram tratadas com 4000 e 8000mg L-1 de ácido indolbutírico (IBA), e as testemunhas que não receberam tratamento auxínico. As estacas foram cultivadas em três diferentes substratos: casca de arroz carbonizada, vermiculita e areia de granulometria grossa. O experimento foi um fatorial no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco repetições de cinco estacas. Para canjerana, estacas basais, medianas e apicais de gema única, foram ou não tratadas com 6000mg L-1 de IBA e cultivadas em substrato comercial e areia de granulometria grossa (3:2 v/v). O experimento foi um fatorial no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com dez repetições de três estacas. A estaquia de rebrota pós-fogo pode ser utilizada para o resgate de árvores adultas de erva-mate e canjerana. Estacas de erva-mate tratadas com 8000mg L-1 de IBA enraízam melhor em areia grossa. Estacas de canjerana, obtidas da porção basal das brotações, apresentam maior sobrevivência e enraizamento do que as medianas e apicais.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of rescuing adult plants by cuttings from post-fire epicormic shoots. We evaluated the native tree species erva mate ( Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) and canjerana ( Cabralea canjerana Vell. Mart.), which present difficult seedling production and are economically and ecologically important. The plant material used for the preparation of cuttings consisted of shoots from bud differentiation of tissue from the stem collar of the trees. One-bud cuttings of erva mate were treated with 4000 or 8000mg L-1 of indolebutiric acid (IBA) and the checks were not treated with auxins. The cuttings were grown in three different substrates: carbonized rice husks, vermiculite and coarse sand. The experiment was a factorial with a completely random design and five replicates of five cuttings. One-bud cuttings from the basal, intermediate and apical parts of canjerna shoots were treated with 0 or 6000mg L-1 of IBA and planted in commercial substrate and coarse sand (3:2 v/v). The experiment was a factorial with a completely random design and ten replicates of three cuttings. Cuttings from post-fire epicormic shoots can be used for rescuing erva mate and canjerana adult plants. Erva mate cuttings treated with 8000mgL-1 IBA have increased rooting when grown in coarse sand. Canjerana cuttings from the basal part of epicormic shoots have greater survival and rooting than those from intermediate and apical parts.

RESUMO A presente pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de estudar e modelar o efeito dos desbastes pré-comerciais e das podas no crescimento diamétrico, em um povoamento de Pinus taeda L. de 15 anos de idade, no Nordeste da Argentina. O estudo localizou-se em solo vermelho argiloso profundo com um delineamento sistemático de faixas para intensidades de desbastes e subfaixas para intensidades de podas. Os tratamentos de desbaste, realizados aos 3 anos de idade, foram: 1666 (sem desbaste); 833; 416 e 208 árvores ha-1. As podas foram realizadas a partir dos 3 anos e com frequência anual por 2, 3 ou 4 anos consecutivos, com remoção de 30, 50 e 70% da copa viva, respectivamente. O modelo geral obtido por regressão linear permitiu estimar o diâmetro da árvore de área basal média (dg) em função da idade com boa precisão (desvio médio absoluto em percentagem igual a 5.71), sendo as variáveis: árvores remanescentes, copa remanescente e número de podas consideradas nos modelos estimadores dos coeficientes da função geral. Aos 15 anos de idade, os diâmetros variaram entre 25.6 e 41.5 cm, para as densidades de 1666 e 208 árvores ha-1, respectivamente, sem poda. O crescimento do dg foi afetado negativamente pelas podas e positivamente pelos desbastes.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to study and to model the effect of pre-commercial thinning and pruning on diameter growth, on a 15th year old stand of Pinus taeda L. in northeastern Argentina. The study was established in a deep red clay soil, with a systematic design of blocks for thinning intensity and sub-blocks for pruning intensity. The thinning treatments, performed at 3 year old were: 1666 (without thinning); 833; 416 and 208 trees ha-1. The pruning were done annually, starting at 3 year old, and applied by 2, 3 or 4 consecutive years removing 30, 50 and 70 % of the living crown, respectively. The general model obtained by linear regression allowed to estimate, with good precision (mean absolute deviation as a percentage equal to 5.71), the quadratic mean diameter (QMD) in function of age. The variable remnant trees, remnant crown, and number of prunings were considered to estimate the general function coefficients. At 15 year old, the QMD varied from 25.6 to 41.5 cm to 1666 and 208 trees ha-,1 respectively, without pruning. The QMD growth was negatively affected by pruning and positively affected by thinning.

RESUMO: O sucesso da implantação de florestas depende da disponibilidade e da qualidade de mudas. O objetivo desta pesquisa é avaliar a possibilidade do uso de mudas de toco e mudas de raiz nua de Cedrela fissilis obtidas de regeneração natural para plantio à campo. Nós usamos Modelos Lineares Generalizados para avaliar sobrevivência e Modelos Hierárquicos para avaliar crescimento em altura durante um ano após o plantio. O diâmetro do colo (DC) inicial e tratamento (mudas de raiz nua ou de toco) afetaram a sobrevivência e o crescimento. Mudas de toco e mudas com maior DC inicial apresentaram maiores probabilidades de sobrevivência e maior crescimento. A melhor qualidade de mudas no tratamento de mudas de toco é devido à maior tolerância ao stress hídrico. Mudas de toco com DC inicial maior que 1 cm tiveram probabilidade de sobrevivência acima de 80%, enquanto mudas de raiz nua pequenas tiveram probabilidade de sobrevivência média de 20%. As mudas de toco cresceram quatro vezes mais que mudas de raiz nua. A utilização da regeneração natural de C. fissilis como fonte de mudas de toco pode ser uma alternativa barata para projetos de restauração florestal e plantios de enriquecimento.

ABSTRACT The success of forest creation relies on seedling availability and quality. The aim of this research is to assess the possible use of rootstock and bare-root seedlings of Cedrela fissilis obtained from natural regeneration for direct field planting. We used Generalized Linear models to assess survival and Hierarchical Models to assess height growth over one year after planting. Initial root-collar diameter (RCD) and treatment (rootstock or bare-root) affected survival and growth. Rootstock and larger seedlings presented higher levels of survival and growth. Higher seedling quality in the rootstock treatment is due to higher water stress tolerance. Rootstock seedlings with more than 1 cm of initial RCD had over 80% of survival probability, while small bare-root seedlings had mean survival probability as low as 20%. Rootstock seedlings grew as much as fourfold more than bare-root. Using natural regeneration of C. fissilis as a source of rootstock seedlings may be a cheap alternative for forest restoration and enrichment planting projects.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as características das plantas de cedro (Cedrela fissilis) atacadas por pragas, os danos causados e as condições em que estes foram mais pronunciados. Realizou-se um censo dos indivíduos de cedro por caminhamento em uma área total de 5,55 ha de floresta nativa, no município de Silveira Martins, RS. Cedros com altura total superior a 15 cm e diâmetro do coleto inferior a 12 cm foram medidos, e foi avaliado seu estado fitossanitário em relação às pragas. Foram confeccionados histogramas de frequência de diâmetro do coleto, e analisou-se a relação hipsométrica das árvores atacadas e sadias por meio da análise de covariância. Para a análise espacial dos indivíduos, foram feitos mapas de densidade de cedros e mapas de taxa de risco do serrador e da mariposa. As árvores com maior probabilidade de ataque foram aquelas com diâmetro de coleto entre 2 e 6 cm. As clareiras ou áreas com baixa densidade total de árvores foram as áreas mais suscetíveis aos ataques da lagarta Hypsipyla grandella, e locais com elevada densidade de indivíduos cujo diâmetro de coleto mede entre 8 e 12 cm são os mais suscetíveis ao ataque de larvas do Oncideres sp.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the characteristics of cedar plants (Cedrela fissilis) attacked by pests, the resultant damages, and the conditions in which the damage was more pronounced. A census of cedar individuals was conducted by going through a total area of 5.55 hectares of native forest in the municipality of Silveira Martins, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Cedars with total height greater than 15 cm and collar diameter less than 12 cm were measured, and their pest status was evaluated. Frequency histograms of the collar diameter were made, and the hypsometric relationship of attacked and healthy trees was evaluated by analysis of covariance. For the spatial analysis of individuals, maps of cedar density and maps for risk assessment of sawyer beetle and moth were made. Trees with the greatest probability of being attacked were those with collar diameter between 2 and 6 cm. The clearings and areas with low total density of trees were the most susceptible ones to attacks of the Hypsipyla grandella caterpillar, and locations with high density of individuals whose collar diameter is between 8 and 12 cm are the most susceptible ones to the attacks of Oncideres sp. larvae.

As relações morfométrias permitem descrever dimensões das árvores sem o prévio conhecimento da idade, auxilia no planejamento florestal e na execução de atividades silviculturais, principalmente quando se deseja tornar sustentável o uso das florestas. Com esse propósito, o objetivo do presente estudo foi modelar e comparar as relações morfométricas de árvores de araucária que crescem em posição social dominante, codominante e dominada em remanescente florestal nativo, localizado no município de Lages - SC. Um total de 294 árvores distribuídas em classes de DAP foi selecionado intencionalmente no interior da floresta. De cada árvore foi medido o DAP, altura total, altura do fuste, diâmetro de copa sob oito raios, bem como a classificação quanto à posição social. Modelos de regressão linear simples e múltipla foram empregados para descrever a relação h/d, proporção de copa e formal de copa em função do diâmetro a altura do peito na forma simples, quadrática, cúbica, inversa e logarítmica. A análise de covariância com variáveis dummy para descrever a posição social foram usadas para testar o paralelismo e inclinação das regressões indicando a necessidade ou não do emprego de regressões independentes. Os resultados indicaram que, mesmo com grande variabilidade na forma e dimensão das copas decorrente do processo de crescimento e de competição, as relações morfométricas de araucária podem ser estimadas com precisão por modelos de regressão. A relação h/d, proporção de copa e formal de copa pode ser descrita por modelo individual para posição social dominante, codominante e dominada, ou alternativamente por modelo único, com a utilização de variáveis dummy que diferenciam o estrato dominado no modelo de relação h/d e de formal de copa. Para a proporção de copa existe diferença de dimensões das árvores dos três estratos sociais, sendo necessário utilizar uma variável de classificação dummy para cada caso ou os modelos individuais.

The morphometric relations allow describing dimensions of trees without prior knowledge of the age, it help the forest planning and implementation of silvicultural treatments, especially when needs to make sustainable use of forests. For this purpose, the aim of this study was to model and comparising the morphometric relations araucaria trees in social position dominant, codominant and dominated in native forest remnant, located in Lages, SC. A total of 294 trees distributed in dbh classes were intentionally selected inside of forest. In each tree was measured dbh, total height, bole height, crown diameter by eight radius, as well as the classification of social position. Simple and multiple linear regression models were used to describe the relation h/d, the proportion of the crown and formal crown in function of diameter at breast height with simple transformation, quadratic, cubic, inverse and logarithmic form. The analysis of covariance with dummy variables were used to describe the social position and tested the parallelism and slope of regression indicating need or not of the use independent regressions. The results indicated that even with great variability in the shape and size of the crown due to growth and competition process, the morphometric relations of araucaria can be accurately estimated by regression models. The relation h/d, proportion of the crown and formal crown can be described by individual model for social position dominant, codominant and dominant, or alternatively a single model with the use of dummy variables that differentiate trees group dominated for the relation h/d and formal crown. The proportion of crown presented difference in dimensions of the trees, being necessary to use dummy variable for each social stratus or use the individual models.

RESUMO A técnica de microestaquia e enraizamento ex vitro pode resultar em mudas com o sistema radicular de melhor qualidade e com maior número de raízes secundárias, quando comparada com a estaquia convencional. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o enraizamento ex vitro e a aclimatização de microestacas de erva-mate em diferentes doses do fitorregulador ácido 3-indolibutírico (AIB) e substratos. Em sala de cultivo foi avaliada diferentes doses de ácido 3-indolibutírico (0, 250, 500, 1000 e 2000 mg.L-1) e diferentes substratos utilizados puros (areia grossa, casca de arroz carbonizada, vermiculita, fibra de coco e substrato comercial). Em câmara úmida foram avaliados os mesmos substratos utilizados puros e as seguintes composições de mesmas proporções de volume: casca de arroz carbonizada + areia grossa; casca de arroz carbonizada + areia grossa + substrato comercial; casca de arroz carbonizada + substrato comercial. O enraizamento e a aclimatização ex vitro de microestacas de erva-mate podem ser realizados em câmara úmida, sendo necessário o uso de ácido 3-indolibutírico na dose de até 1250 mg.L-1. O substrato composto em iguais proporções volumétricas de casca de arroz carbonizada + areia grossa + substrato comercial proporcionou uma maior porcentagem de microestacas enraizadas.

ABSTRACT The technique of microcutting and ex vitro rooting can result in plantlets with better quality of radicular system and larger number of secondary roots, when compared with conventional cutting. The objective of this work was to evaluate the ex vitro rooting and acclimatization of holly microcuttings in different doses of phytoregulator indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and substrate. In the growth room were evaluated different doses of indole-3-butyric acid (0, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg.L-1) and different substrates used pure (coarse sand, carbonized rice husk, vermiculite, coconut fiber and commercial substrate). In humid chamber were evaluated the same pure substrates and the following combinations of the same volume ratios: carbonized rice husk + coarse sand; carbonized rice husk + coarse sand + commercial substrate; carbonized rice husk + commercial substrate. The ex vitro rooting and acclimation of holly microcuttings can be done in the humid chamber, necessitating the use of indole-3-butyric acid at a dose of 1250 mg.L-1. The substrate composed in equal proportions of carbonized rice husk + coarse sand + commercial substrate provided a higher percentage of rooted microcuttings.

Objetivou-se conhecer a distância de dispersão efetiva de Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart. em um fragmento de Floresta Estacional. Foram alocadas parcelas de 5 m × 5 m em uma área com alta densidade de indivíduos regenerantes da espécie. Os indivíduos com altura maior que 30 cm e DAP menor que 15 cm foram contabilizados e tiveram suas coordenadas relativas conhecidas. Indivíduos com DAP maior que 15 cm foram considerados como produtores de sementes. A distância de dispersão foi calculada através da metodologia de Nathan & Muller-Landau (2000), sendo calculadas duas distâncias: distância de cada indivíduo em relação à matriz mais próxima e em relação à média das distâncias entre todas as matrizes. O pico de dispersão efetiva ocorre a uma distância média de 30 metros das árvores matrizes, sendo necessário três indivíduos produtores de sementes por hectare para se garantir a regeneração contínua da espécie.

This study aimed to know the effective dispersal distance of Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart. in a forest fragment. Plots of 5 × 5 m were allocated in an area with high density of regenerating individuals of the species. Individuals higher than 30 cm and with diameter at breast height (DBH) smaller than 15 cm were recorded and referenced in pseudo-coordinates. Individuals with DBH greater than 15 cm were considered as seed producers. The dispersal distance was calculated using the methodology by Nathan & Muller-Landau (2000); two distances were calculated: the distance of each individual in relation to the nearest adult tree, and the average distance between all matrix trees. The effective dispersal peak occurs at a mean distance of 30 meters from the mother trees. Three seed producing individuals per hectare are needed to ensure the continuous regeneration of the species.

No presente trabalho foi estudado o efeito do espaçamento inicial sobre a relação entre a densidade de árvores por hectare e o diâmetro médio em povoamentos monoclonais de Eucalyptus saligna Smith. Os dados foram obtidos em povoamentos de densidade completa e altamente estocados, monitorados anualmente em parcelas permanentes até os 18 anos. Para isto, foram testados os modelos de densidade de árvores por hectare pelo diâmetro médio, indicado o modelo de autodesbaste de Tang como o mais preciso, para gerar as estimativas dos valores de densidade, apresentando um coeficiente de determinação ajustado de 0,85, erro padrão da estimativa baixo igual a 0,1026, coeficiente de variação igual a 1,39 %, uma tendência mínima igual a -0,0534 e eficiência elevada igual a 0,3903. O autodesbaste ocorre numa dimensão de diâmetro médio diretamente proporcional à densidade inicial de árvores por hectare do plantio. Quanto maior o espaçamento inicial, maior é o diâmetro médio no momento do início do autodesbaste na população. O coeficiente angular da equação de densidade pelo diâmetro foi igual a 1,0124, divergente do valor indicado para espécies florestais na lei de autodesbaste.

In the present study the effect of initial spacing on relationship between the density of trees per hectare and the average diameter in monoclonal stands of Eucalyptus saligna were investigated. The data used were collected from full stocked stands and highly stored annually, monitored until 18 years old using permanent plots. For that, the density model of trees per hectare by diameter was tested and the self-thinning model of Tang was indicated as the most accurate one and provided great performance statistics, with a coefficient of determination equal to 0.85, lower standard error equal to 0.1026, low coefficient of variation equal to 1.39%, a minimal tendency equal to -0.0534 and high-efficiency equal to 0.3903. The self-thinning occurs in a diameter directly proportional to the initial density of trees per hectare of plantation. As great is the initial spacing greater is the mean diameter in the moment of initiation of self-thinning of the population. The slope of the equation of density and diameter was equal to 1.0124 diverging from the value indicated for forest species in the law of self-thinning.
