ABSTRACT An adequate thermal environment in pig farming facilities is essential to ensure productivity and animal welfare. The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior and performance of finishing pigs, subjected to climate-controlled environments and supplementary lighting. Twenty-seven pigs (3/4 Duroc, 1/4 Pietrain) were kept in pens with no climate control, pens with forced ventilation and pens with adiabatic evaporative cooling system, associated with 12 h of natural light, 12 h of natural light + 4 h of artificial light and 12 h of natural light + 6 h of artificial light. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3x3 factorial arrangement and the means were compared by Tukey test (p<0.05). Meteorological variables, temperature and relative humidity, were recorded and the zootechnical performance of the animals was evaluated by weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion. Behavioral analysis was performed using the frequency of ingestive and comfort behaviors (exploratory activities and social interactions). Better performance was found for animals subjected to evaporative cooling, and the program with supplementary lighting for 6 hours promoted better feed conversion. Pigs subjected to evaporative cooling showed higher frequency of comfort behaviors and higher frequency of ingestive activity, stimulated by better thermal conditions in the housing.

In this work, it is described the design of twenty-four heterocyclic amine-azachalcones compounds through molecular hybridization of chalcone scaffold and fragments of isoniazid, fluoroquinolones, and linezolid with antituberculosis potential. The new compounds were synthesized via Claisen-Schmidt condensation, providing yields of 36-95%. Fifteen compounds showed antituberculosis activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv strain. Two amine-azachalcones 15 and 17 showed relevant biological activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 6.62 and 4.85 µM, respectively. Compound 12 showed the best profile of antitubercular activity with MIC = 9.54 µM and selectivity index (SI) = 9.33. It was found that morpholine group is important to increase potency of antimycobacterial activity but also to add some toxicity to the chalcone molecular framework. The results described herein would be a guide in the designing of novel and optimized antitubercular derivatives based on the chalcone scaffold.

ABSTRACT The quality of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seeds is directly influenced by their physical characteristics, which are seldom studied notwithstanding their extreme importance in the entire production chain. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify the physical properties of two types of sesame seeds, collected at three points in the plant with different maturation levels, measured with digital caliper, and to evaluate the feasibility of using a digital image to determine their physical characteristics. The seeds were initially evaluated for water content and mass of 1000 seeds, and later with the data of the characteristic dimensions A (length), B (width), and C (thickness), obtained by a caliper and digital images, we determined their sphericity, circularity, projected area, and geometric diameter. We observed that water content did not affect the physical properties of the cream (CNPA G4) and black sesame cultivars. In addition, seeds of the black cultivar presented higher results than the seeds of the cream cultivar for the mass of 1000 seeds (2.7 ± 0.08 g), sphericity (58.8 ± 0.47%), projected area (4.03 ± 0.12 mm2), and geometric diameter (1.65 ± 0.03 mm). Seed batches harvested after 70% maturation had the highest mass of 1000 seeds (2.7 ± 0.12 g). The results of the physical analyses of sesame seeds performed with caliper and digital image are equivalent, which shows that digital images can be used as tools to obtain the physical properties of seeds.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Beta-thalassemia is caused by a deficient synthesis of the ß-chain of hemoglobin, which leads to a chronic, microcytic and hypochromic anemia. More than 200 mutations have already been associated with this type of thalassemia, and their frequencies may vary according to the population. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the frequencies of CD39, IVS1-1, IVS1-6 and IVS1-110 mutations in people with beta-thalassemia from the city of Franca, São Paulo, and to evaluate the influence of the genotypes on hematological alterations. Methods: Venous blood samples were collected from 25 volunteers previously diagnosed with beta-thalassemia. Complete blood counts (CBC) were performed, and the identification of the mutations was carried out using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: The CD39 mutation was found in 11 (44%) individuals, followed by IVS1-6 (9; 36%) and IVS1-110 (4; 16%). One patient (4%) did not present any of these mutations. IVS1-6 mutation was inversely correlated to red cell distribution width (RDW) (rs = -0.44; p = 0.034), and CD39 was correlated to lower mean corpuscular volume (MCV) (rs = -0.44; p = 0.034). Multivariable linear regression models showed that the CD39 mutation carriers have lower levels for hemoglobin (ß = -0.61; p = 0.044) and hematocrit (ß = -2.1; p = 0.018). Conclusion: The results showed a high frequency of the CD39 mutation in the city of Franca, and the correlations observed between the presence of CD39 mutation and the hematological alterations suggest a genotype influence on the phenotype of beta-thalassemia, which would contribute to the clinical variations of this hemoglobinopathy.

The pathogenic potential of Blastocystis sp. in experimental models requires further investigation. In this work, the pathogenicity of this parasite in the gastrointestinal tract of male Swiss mice was evaluated according to the inoculum size and period of infection. Animals were infected intragastrically, with 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Blastocystis sp. vacuolar forms obtained from a mixture of eight human isolates cultured axenically in Jones' medium. After seven, 14, 21, 28 and 60 days of infection, the animals were sacrificed and fragments of the small intestine (duodenum), large intestine, and cecum were subjected to histopathological analysis. Blastocystis sp. triggered an inflammatory response in the different tissues analyzed, with a predominance of mononuclear cells. The parasite was found in the muscular layer of the cecum, showing its invasive character. Larger inocula triggered inflammatory processes earlier (seven days) than smaller ones (from 21 days). We conclude that, in the proposed model, the pathogenicity of Blastocystis sp. isolates that were studied is related to inoculum size and period of infection.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

OBJECTIVE: To measure and compare the activity of the masseter, temporalis and buccinator muscles in different infant feeding methods METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 60 full-term infants with no intercurrent diseases, aged between two and three months, classified into the following groups: 1) exclusive breastfeeding; 2) breastfeeding plus bottle-feeding; and 3) exclusive breastfeeding plus cup feeding. Surface electromyography was performed during infant feeding. The Krushal-Wallis test was used, complemented by multiple paired comparisons of the groups. A 5% significance level was chosen for the tests. RESULTS: Statistically higher results were verified in the breastfeeding group in relation to the bottle-feeding one, both in the range of movement and the mean contraction of the masseter. With regard to the temporalis muscle, statistically higher results were found in the breastfeeding group comparatively to the bottle-feeding one. As to the buccinator muscle, statistically higher results were observed in the breastfeeding group in relation to the bottle-feeding one, although in this case, the difference concerned only the range of contraction. CONCLUSION: The similarities between the muscle activity in the breastfeeding and in the cup-feeding groups suggests that cup-feeding can be used as an alternative infant feeding method, being better than bottle-feeding, due to the hyperactivity of the buccinator muscle, which could result in changes to the structural growth and development of the stomatognathic system functions.

To evaluate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in type 1 diabetes (DM1), we studied 170 subjects (89F/81M, 14 children, 51 adolescents and 105 adults, mean age 24.4±11.9y) and correlated anthropometric data with demographic and clinical factors. The prevalence of obesity, overweight and/or overweight risk was 21.2% (n= 36). Among children and adolescents BMI z score and BMI percentile were highly correlated (r= 0.97; p= 0.00). SBP (p= 0.004) and DBP (p= 0.0007) were different between patients with normal and high BMI. A trend for increase waist circumference (WC) was observed in the groups with different BP (p= 0.0000). By multivariate analysis BMI was age-dependent (OR: 1.04, 95% CI = 1.01-1.07; p= 0.008). Using stepwise analysis SBP was dependent of WC (r= 0.57; p= 0.00) and age (r= 0.63; p= 0.00) and DBP was dependent of WC (r= 0.53; p= 0.00). The prevalence of overweight and obesity seems to reflect the global tendency of weight excess and their clinical outcomes. Awareness of overweight in DM1 needs to be intensified.
