ABSTRACT Compaction is one of the main physical factors of the soil to affect plant development. The aim of this study was to evaluate root and shoot development in winter plants grown in soils of different textures under varying degrees of soil compaction (DSC). The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse of the State University of Ponta Grossa, in the south of Brazil. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) and an intercropping system of black oats (Avena strigosa) and forage turnip (Raphanus sativus) were tested in a sandy loam Cambisol and a clayey loam Latosol under a DSC of 85%, 90%, 95% and 100% of the maximum bulk density in a completely randomised design with four replications. Each plot consisted of one PVC column, 0.1 m in diameter and 0.2 m in height, comprising three cylinders placed one on top of the other, with a respective height of 0.08, 0.04 and 0.08 m. The sub-surface layer (0.08-0.12 m) was compacted, and corresponded to the middle cylinder. In t he compacted sub-surface layer, the intercropped black oats and forage turnip presented 28.5% more root dry matter (RDM) than did the wheat. The total RDM decreased by 32% for an increase of 85% to 100% in the DSC, where both the compacted sub-surface layer (0.08-0.12 m) and the layer below that (0.12-0.2 m) were most affected, with a reduction of 45.2% and 53%, respectively. Considering the conditions of this study, which evaluated soils that offer no water or chemical restrictions on the plants, shoot dry matter (SDM) was less affected than the roots, decreasing by 12% for an increase of 85% to 100% in the DSC. There was no difference between the types of soil on crop response due to the variation in the DSC.

ABSTRACT Solar radiation is one of the aspects which most influence species composition, so light is a limiting factor to tree growth in forests. This study aimed to evaluate the leaf morphological variations between individuals of the Myrcia splendens (Sw.) DC. species under different light conditions in an urban forest. The fragment is characterized by having an open canopy area and an advanced regeneration stage in which branches of five individuals were collected, totaling 100 leaves. The traits evaluated were leaf area, fresh biomass, dry biomass, water content, specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content. An analysis of variance showed that most of the morphological traits (dry biomass, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content) varied significantly. Furthermore, variables such as dry biomass, water content and leaf area showed a high correlation with fresh biomass in both areas. The morphological variation found in M. splendens allows for creating growth and establishment strategies according to the environmental conditions.

ABSTRACT Leaf chemical analysis is one of the ways to assess plant development. However, this type of assessment is expensive and time-consuming. The variation of nutrient content in the leaves modifies the proportion of light reflected and absorbed by plants at different wavelengths. Being able to relate the color reflected by the leaves with their phosphorus (P) content and using this data as input into an artificial neural network (ANN) can be an alternative for its determination. For this, it is necessary to establish which colors are most correlated with the different nutrients. Therefore, the phosphorus content in tomato leaves was evaluated in this study, according to four treatments (0.25, 50, 75, and 100% of the P doses). Different vegetation indices were also evaluated using images of mini-tomato leaves through a principal component analysis to determine which ones would be suitable to serve as an input to an ANN (multilayer perceptron). DGCI (Dark Green Color Index) and Bn (Normalized Blue) were the indices most related to P content. The neural network obtained 90% accuracy in the classification after training using both sides of the leaves.

ABSTRACT Lowland rice is traditionally irrigated by flood systems, demanding high water consumption. Localized irrigation by subsurface dripping is proposed as an alternative, in addition to the replacement of the source of water intended for human consumption with another of lower quality, such as saline water. However, plants can be affected by saline and/or water stress in both conditions, and the use of thermal imaging emerges as a tool to assess the plant status. In this context, this study aimed to identify the stress of subsurface drip-irrigated arborio rice under different salt concentrations and soil moisture by thermographic images. The design consisted of randomized blocks in a (2×4)+2 factorial with three replications, totaling 30 experimental plots. Soil solution salinity was assessed by electrical conductivity. The thermal images were processed by an algorithm to determine the normalized relative canopy temperature (NRCT) index at different crop development stages. Saline stress was identified by the NRCT index, with higher sensitivity of plants at the flowering stage with a rebalance over time, confirmed at grain filling and harvest stages.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Abstract: Myracrodruon urundeuva, a native species from the Brazilian Caatinga, is widely distributed across its endemic region, where it also plays an essential socioeconomic role. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental stress on the germination of M. urundeuva seeds harvested in different years (2010 to 2013). Seeds were germinated at constant temperatures between 10 to 40 °C, osmotic potentials from 0 to -0.8 MPa (in polyethylene glycol 6000 solutions), and from 0 to -0.5 MPa (in NaCl solutions). The experiment was conducted according to a completely randomized design, with three replicates of 50 seeds, in a factorial scheme (harvest year x stress intensity) for each environmental stress. Germination data were then analysed using thermal, hydro and halo time models, and future germination responses projected according to climate change scenarios. The germination thermal thresholds ranged from 7.4 to 53.3 oC. The germination base osmotic threshold (using polyethylene glycol) was -0.6 MPa and the base osmotic threshold in NaCl was -0.43MPa. Seeds from different harvest years showed distinct tolerance to environmental stresses. The thermal, hydro and halo-time models were efficient to describe the germinative response of seeds, and the climate models allowed to identify the germination responses of M. urundeuva in future climate. According to the models for future climate (RCP 8.5), the reduction of rainfall by 2100 will directly affect seed germination and seedling recruitment of M. urundeuva.

ABSTRACT The elastic of modulus is an important mechanical property in the design of timber structures, so obtaining it through several methods needs to be evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the use of an efficient technique for determining the apparent longitudinal modulus taking into account the relationship range/height (L/h) and the influence of the shear modulus by comparing non-destructive tests with static bending tests. The wood used in paper was Toona ciliata M. Roemer (Australian cedar). Non-destructive tests were performed with the techniques of longitudinal and transverse vibration. It was concluded that the assay of longitudinal vibration is most suitable method to obtain the apparent longitudinal elasticity modulus, because the shear forces that occur due to the shear stresses are not significantly influenced by the variations of the ratio L/h. It was also possible to conclude that the relationship range/height, currently 21 in ABNT’s standards, may be replaced by 20, when determining apparent longitudinal elasticity modules and modulus of rupture, through the static bending and free transverse vibration tests.

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional status of table beet plants cultivated in a greenhouse irrigated with treated dairy effluent at different irrigation depths. The experimental design used was a randomized block in a 3 x 3 + 1 factorial arrangement with four replications and conducted in a greenhouse. The treatments consisted of three types of water sources and three irrigation depths applied by drip irrigation: anaerobic effluent; anaerobic/aerobic effluent; tap water, and irrigation for replenishment 50; 100 and 150% of the crop evapotranspiration (ETc). All these treatments were applied in combination with 50% of the recommended nitrogen fertilization for the table beet cultivation. A control treatment was irrigated with tap water with irrigation depth equal to 100% ETc and received the complete dose (100%) of mineral nitrogen fertilizer. Table beet seedlings were arranged in 40 fiberglass boxes with a base area of 1 m2. Table beets were harvested 72 days after transplanting (DAT) when the leaves and roots were analyzed. Irrigation with wastewater promoted appropriate levels of macronutrients, distributed between the leaves and roots. The sodium was increased significantly in the leaves and roots of table beets in effluent treatments at increasing irrigation depths, which was antagonistic to the absorption of potassium.

ABSTRACT: Phytoremediation is a technique that uses plants to decontaminate soils containing harmful organic and inorganic elements. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of three species of forage green manure in phytoremediation of saline soil irrigated with treated effluent from dairy processing plant. The design used was randomized blocks (3×3) with four replicates. The treatments were three different water sources (anaerobic treated effluent, aerobic treated effluent, and tap water) applied to growing table beets combined with the post-cultivation of three forage green manure: Calopogonium mucunoides Desv (Calopo), Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp (Pigeon pea), and Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Brown (Millet). The treatment with Millet had higher dry mass production with all water sources, although showing growth reduction after irrigation with anaerobic treated effluent. Millet presented higher sodium extraction efficiency (22.4 kg ha−1); however, it was not effective in soil phytoremediation because the exchangeable sodium percentage was not reduced to levels that allowed for new effluent input.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the influence of age, irrigation and spacing, on the volume and basic density of Eucalyptus wood. We used two clones of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla with age of six and twelve months, sowed in two regions, one irrigated and other unirrigated, with spacing of 3×0.5, 1.5×2, 3×1, 3×2 and 3×3 m. The volume was estimated according to the method of Smalian as well as the weighted density. The larger volume of wood per hectare values were obtained in the close spacing and irrigated region. Wider spacing showed higher specific gravity values timber for clone A; however, clone B didn’t change with spacing. The comparison of average density values for the clones in irrigated and non-irrigated areas, showed similar results in most studied spacings.

Abstract This study examined the relationship between resting heart rate (RHRr) and anthropometric, metabolic and hemodynamic parameters in subjects aged 80 years and over. One hundred thirteen individuals were divided into two groups (RHR:<66 beats/min and ≥66 beats/min). Anthropometric parameters (weight, height, body mass index and waist circumference (WC) were measured. Hemodynamic parameters (systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) pressure) were measured and pulse pressures (PP) were obtained. Metabolic parameters were fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and total cholesterol. In elderly aged 80 and over, RHR influenced the changes observed in DBP, PP and triglycerides. Additionally, subjects with RHR≥66 beats/min had higher DBP, glucose, total cholesterol and lower PP as compared with elderly with RHR<66 beats/min. Men demonstrated greater weight, height, and WC than women while women had higher percentage of body fat, trunk fat, and higher total cholesterol. Thus, subjects with 80 years old and over who present RHR≥66 have higher DBP and lower PP and heart rate variability compared with the elderly with RHR<66.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

As espécies estudadas foram amoreira (Chlorophora tinctoria), angelim-pedra (Hymenolobium petraeum), angico-vermelho (Anadenanthera columbrinavar. cebil), angico-verdadeiro (Anadenanthera peregrina), jacarandá-da-bahia (Dalbergia nigra), parajú (Manilkara longifolia), roxinho (Peltogine nitens), pau-brasil (Caesalpiniaechinata), Eucalyptus cloeziana e Eucalyptus torelliana.
In this research, weaimed to evaluate the natural resistance of ten forest wood species used in joinery to the attack of dry-wood termite Cryptotermes brevis in laboratory test. The wood species studied were amoreira (Chlorophora tinctoria), angelim-pedra (Hymenolobium petraeum), Anadenanthera columbrina var. cebil (angico-vermelho), Anadenanthera peregrina (angico-verdadeiro), Dalbergia nigra (jacaranda-da-bahia), Manilkara longifolia (paraju), Peltogine nitens (roxinho), Caesalpinia echinata (pau-brasil), Eucalyptus cloeziana and Eucalyptus torelliana. The woods studied were susceptible to C. brevisattack, except for A. columbrina and M. longifolia woods. H. petraeum, D. nigra and C. echinata woods showed lowermortality compared to other species. The highest levels of wood waste were observed in D. nigra, H. petraeum, C. echinata and E. cloeziana woods. C. tinctoria, P. nitens and E. torelliana woods presented superficial waste. Higher values oftermite mortality were observed in woods of greater density, and higher levels of extractives and ash. However, there is not one sole characteristic that could beused to relate the attackof termites to the woods studied.

Microbial lipase from Candida rugosa was immobilized by covalent binding on wood cellulignin (Eucaliptus grandis) chemically modified with carbonyldiimidazole. The immobilized system was fully evaluated in aqueous (olive oil hydrolysis) and organic (ester synthesis) media. A comparative study between free and immobilized lipase was carried out in terms of pH, temperature and thermal stability. A higher pH value (8.0) was found optimal for the immobilized lipase. The optimal reaction temperature shifted from 37 °C for the free lipase to 45 °C for the immobilized lipase. The pattern of heat stability indicated that the immobilization process tends to stabilize the enzyme. Kinetics tests at 37 °C following the hydrolysis of olive oil obeyed the Michaelis-Menten rate equation. Values for Km = 924.9 mM and Vmax = 198.3 U/mg were lower than for free lipase, suggesting that the affinity towards the substrate changed and the activity of the immobilized lipase decreased during the course of immobilization. The immobilized derivative was also tested in the ester synthesis from several alcohols and carboxylic acids.
