Abstract This study quantify the total organic carbon content, light fraction organic matter (LFOM), and soil organic matter fractions (from chemical and physical fractionations) in four different cultivation areas: 1 and 2) rubber tree clonal plantations (FX 3864 and IAN 873); 3) a pasture; and 4) a secondary forest. The research was carried out using soil samples from clonal plantations of eight-year-old rubber trees, located in the coastal plain (Tabuleiros Costeiros) of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The difference in the management of the rubber tree clone area promoted improvements in the soil quality, as it increased the carbon contents of the granulometric fractions, LFOM, and humic substances from the IAN 873 clone area. Both rubber tree areas evaluated presented higher mineral-associated organic carbon levels and humic substances than did the pasture area, reinforcing the reforestation potential of areas with degraded pastures through hevea culture.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o consumo de nutrientes (CN) e exportação de nutrientes do campo através dos produtos colhidos (EN), visando estimar o balanço dos principais macronutrientes: nitrogênio (N), fósforo (P) e potássio (K) nos países da América Latina e Caribe (ALC). O balanço de nutrientes (BN) foi estimado pela quantidade de nutrientes que entra nos sistemas agrícolas pela adubação e fixação biológica de nitrogênio (FBN) em relação à quantidade que deixa o sistema pelos produtos colhidos, em cada um dos países da região. A região da ALC, com base em estatísticas oficiais correspondentes ao ano 2016, apresentou um balanço positivo de N, no entanto, em alguns países (Argentina, Bolívia e Paraguai) esse balanço foi negativo. A FBN é a principal fonte de N da agricultura latino-americana, respondendo por 62% (11,29 Mt N) do total de N (18,10 Mt N) que ingressa anualmente nos sistemas agrícolas. De um modo geral, o fornecimento de P via adubação na América Latina atenderam as exportações realizadas pelos produtos colhidos, com exceção dos países Argentina, Bolívia, Guatemala e México, os quais se utilizaram de reservas do solo para a nutrição das plantas. O K foi um dos nutrientes cuja aplicação não atende a demanda das culturas da região, apresentando balanços negativos em quase todos os países, exceto Brasil, Colômbia e Venezuela. Deve-se destacar que em muitos solos agrícolas na região, a disponibilidade de K ainda é alta. Os maiores cuidados com o uso de insumos, incluindo os fertilizantes, se dá com os cultivos de soja, milho, café, cana de açúcar e laranja, ficando o restante dependente da fertilidade natural dos solos, que em sua maioria já são pobres, colocando em risco a segurança alimentar.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate nutrient consumption and exports in agricultural systems of Latin America and the Caribbean (ALC) in order to estimate the balance of the main macronutrients (N, P and K) used by crops. The nutrient balance was estimated by considering the amount of nutrients entering the agricultural systems via fertilization and biological N2 fixation (BNF) and the amount of nutrients leaving the systems through crop harvest removal in each country. Based on official statistics for the year 2016, the ALC region presented a positive balance of nitrogen. However, some countries (Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay) had a negative balance of N. Biological N2 fixation is the main source of N in Latin American agriculture, accounting for more than 62% (11.29 Mt N) of the total N (18.10 Mt N) entering the agricultural systems. Broadly speaking, the supply of P via fertilizer in Latin America counterbalanced the removal through crop harvest, with the exception of Argentina, Bolivia, Guatemala and México, which have crop production dependent on soil P mining. Potassium was one of the nutrients whose application does not meet the demand of the region’s crops, presenting negative balances in almost all countries except Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela. Nevertheless, it should be noted that many agricultural soils from this region have naturally high K availability. Greater care in the use of inputs, including fertilizers, occurs with cropping soybean, corn, coffee, sugarcane and oranges, while the rest are dependent on natural soil fertility, which may compromise food safety.

RESUMO O acúmulo e as transformações da matéria orgânica do solo são fundamentais para a manutenção e melhoria dos atributos químicos, físicos e biológicos do solo, e, consequentemente, para o funcionamento das florestas tropicais. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência de florestas secundárias com diferentes estádios sucessionais na matéria orgânica do solo, nos estoques de carbono e nitrogênio e na fertilidade do solo. Foram selecionadas três áreas de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual, com diferentes estádios sucessionais, sendo estas: floresta em estádio inicial - FEI, floresta em estádio médio - MSF e floresta em estádio avançado - FEA, localizadas em Pinheiral, RJ. Foram determinados os valores de carbono e nitrogênio total, estoques de C e nitrogênio, isótopo δ13C (%°), fracionamento químico e granulométrico da matéria orgânica do solo e fertilidade do solo. Por meio dos valores do isótopo δ13C (%°) verificou-se que a maior parte do carbono do solo dos diferentes estádios sucessionais é oriunda das espécies florestais (plantas C3). As áreas com maior tempo de sucessão (FEM e FEA) promoveram maiores teores e estoques de carbono e nitrogênio, e carbono associado aos minerais em comparação à ISF. Adicionalmente, na FEA observaram-se aumentos dos teores de fósforo, ácido fúlvico, ácido húmico e redução dos valores de densidade do solo quando comparada as demais áreas. A FEM apresentou, de maneira geral, maior fertilidade do solo. Este estudo destaca a importância das florestas secundárias que, mesmo em fases iniciais de sucessão, possuem grande potencial em estocar e estabilizar carbono orgânico no solo.

ABSTRACT The accumulation and transformation of organic matter in the soil are fundamental for the maintenance and improvement of the chemical, physical, and biological attributes of the soil, and consequently, for the tropical forests functioning. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of secondary forests with different successional stages on soil organic matter, carbon and nitrogen stocks, and soil fertility. Three areas of seasonal semideciduous forest, located in Pinheiral - RJ, with different successional stages were selected: initial stage forest - ISF, medium stage forest - MSF, and advanced stage forest - ASF. The values of total carbon and nitrogen, C and N stocks, δ13C (‰) isotope, chemical and granulometric fractionation of soil organic matter, and soil fertility were determined. Based on the values of δ 13C (‰), it was verified that most of the soil carbon of the different successional stages comes from forest species (C3 plants). The areas with the highest succession time (MSF and ASF) possess higher levels of carbon and nitrogen contents and stocks, and carbon associated with minerals compared to ISF. In addition, ASF showed increased phosphorus, fulvic acid, humic acid, whereas soil density exhibited reduced values when compared to that of other areas. The MSF showed, in general, greater fertility of the soil. This study emphasizes the importance of secondary forests that, even in the initial stages of succession, have great potential to store and stabilize organic carbon in the soil.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a densidade do solo e o estoque de carbono (EstC) do solo, as frações químicas e granulométricas da matéria orgânica e o sinal isotópico do δ13C do solo em fragmentos florestais e uma área de pastagem mista (MMP). O estudo foi realizado no município de Pinheiral, Estado do Rio de Janeiro. As áreas avaliadas foram: fragmento de floresta secundária em estádio inicial (FSEI) com 20 anos de regeneração; fragmento de floresta secundária em estádio intermediário (FSEI), com 25 anos de regeneração; fragmento de floresta secundária em estádio avançado (FSEA) com 60 anos de regeneração e uma pastagem mista manejada (PMM). Os atributos relacionados ao carbono do solo mostraram respostas significativas aos efeitos dos processos de degradação / recuperação da terra, especialmente para os seguintes indicadores: carbono orgânico total, matéria orgânica e matéria orgânica particulada. Não houve alterações significativas para as substâncias húmicas e foi encontrada a prevalência da fração humina. As mudanças mais significativas nos valores de 13C ocorreram até a profundidade de 60 cm. Na área de pastagem, a 0-10 cm, 67% do estoque de carbono vem de plantas C4, reduzindo nas camadas subseqüentes. Nas áreas FSEI e FSEA, em 0-10 cm, a contribuição das plantas C3 foi significativa, com pequenas alterações na profundidade.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the soil carbon stock (Stock C) and bulk density, the chemical and granulometric fractions of the organic matter and the isotopic signal of the soil δ13C in forest fragments and a mixed managed pasture (MMP). The study was carried out in the municipality of Pinheiral, State of Rio de Janeiro. The evaluated areas were: fragment of secondary forest in initial stage (SFIS) with 20 years of regeneration; fragment of secondary forest in intermediate stage (SFINS), with 25 years of regeneration; advanced secondary forest fragment (SFAS) with 60 years of regeneration and mixed pasture managed (MHP). The attributes related to soil carbon showed significant responses to the effects of land degradation / recovery processes, especially for the following indicators: total organic carbon, organic matter stock and particulate organic matter. No significant alterations for humic substances, and prevalence of the humin fraction was found. The most significant changes in δ13C values occurred up to the depth of 60 cm. In the grassland area, at 0-10 cm, 67% of the carbon stock comes from C4 plants, reducing in the subsequent layers. In SFINS and SFAS areas, at 0-10 cm, the contribution of C3 plants was significant, with minor changes in depth.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os teores de carbono orgânico total e alguns atributos físicos (densidade do solo, macroporosidade, microporosidade, diâmetro médio ponderado e geométrico de agregados) de um Cambissolo Háplico sob fragmentos florestais de Mata Atlântica em estágio inicial; intermediário e avançado, e compará-los à áreas de pastagem e agricultura (anual e perene). A regeneração de florestas secundárias em função do estágio de recuperação contribuiu para o aumento de carbono orgânico total e da macroporosidade, reduzindo os valores de densidade do solo, diâmetro médio ponderado e geométrico de agregados. Na área de pastagem foram verificados valores de carbono orgânico total, densidade do solo, macroporosidade, microporosidade e diâmetro médio ponderado e geométrico de agregados similares aos observados nas áreas de floresta. Na área de agricultura anual observou-se redução dos teores de carbono orgânico total, macroporosidade, diâmetro médio ponderado e geométrico de agregados e aumento da densidade do solo em função do manejo adotado.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate changes in the content of total organic carbon (TOC) and some physical properties (Bulk density, macroporosity, microporosity, mean weight diameter and mean geometric diameter of aggregates) of a Inceptsol in forest fragments of the Atlantic Forest in early; intermediate and advanced stage, and compare them to pasture and agriculture (annual and perennial) areas. Secondary forests regeneration due to the recovery stage contributed to the increase of total organic carbon and macroporosity, reducing soil density values, and weighted geometric mean diameter of aggregates. In the pasture area Values of total organic carbon values, soil bulk density, macroporosity, microporosity and weighted mean and geometric diameters of aggregates were similar to those observed in forest areas. In the annual agriculture area we observed reduction of total organic carbon, macroporosity, and weighted mean and geometric diameter of aggregates and increased soil density according to the adopted management.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar e comparar a densidade (Ds), o teor de carbono (C) e de nitrogênio (N), estoque de carbono (EstC) e de nitrogênio (EstN) e a abundância natural de δ13C no perfil do solo de uma área de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual (FES) convertida em monocultura eucalipto (Corymbia citriodora) (ERN), visando elucidar as mudanças ocorridas nesse ambiente. Para isso, foram coletadas amostras de terra em profundidades de até um metro em cada área de estudo. A conversão da FES para monocultura na área de ERN reduziu a Ds, o N e a EstC na camada superficial, no entanto foi observado um aumento na EstC nas camadas mais profundas do solo. O sinal isotópico de δ13C da vegetação que antes ocupava as áreas do plantio C. citriodora era semelhante ao encontrado atualmente na área de FES, e a época de conversão foi na profundidade 0,40 m do perfil do solo.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the density (Ds) and content of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), carbon (Cstock) and nitrogen stock (Nstock), and the natural abundance of δ13C in the soil profile of an area of Semideciduous Forest (SF) converted to eucalyptus monoculture (Corymbia citriodora) (ERN) in order to elucidate the changes in these environments. For this purpose, soil samples were collected at depths up to one meter in each study area. The conversion of FES to monocultures reduced Ds, N and EstC in the surface layer. However, there was an increase in EstC in the deeper soil layers. The δ13C isotopic signal of the vegetation that once occupied areas of C. citriodora plantation was similar to that currently found in the area of SF, and the time of conversion was at the depth of 0,40 m in the soil profile.

RESUMO A avaliação integrada dos atributos físicos, estoque de carbono (EstC) e de nitrogênio (EstN) além da abundância natural de δ13C do solo se mostram eficazes na detecção de mudanças ocorridas na paisagem. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar e comparar a densidade do solo, EstC, EstN e abundância natural de δ13C em perfis de solo de diferentes fitofisionomias da Estação Ecológica de Pirapitinga – EEP visando elucidar as mudanças ocorridas nesse ambiente. Para isso, foram coletadas e analisadas amostras de terra em profundidade de até um metro nas diferentes fitofisionomias da EEP. Os maiores teores de argila do solo e densidade de plantas das fitofisionomias florestais proveram maiores EstC e EstN e menores valores de densidade do solo em comparação às demais vegetações campestres. O δ13C revelou que as áreas das fitofisionomias florestais eram antes ocupadas preponderantemente por plantas do ciclo fotossintético C4, semelhantes à vegetação campestre encontrada atualmente na EEP.

ABSTRACT The integrated assessment of physical attributes, carbon (StockC) and nitrogen (StockN) stock, and natural abundance of δ13C are effective in detecting landscape changes. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate and compare the bulk density, StockC, StockN and natural abundance of δ13C in the soil profiles of different vegetation types of the Pirapitinga Ecological Station (EEP), to elucidate the changes in this area. For this, soil samples were collected and analyzed at depths up to one meter in different vegetation types of the EEP. The highest soil clay content and density of plant of forest vegetation promoted higher levels of StockC and StockN and lower bulk density values than the other grassland vegetation. The δ13C revealed that the areas of forest vegetation types were previously occupied mainly by plants of the C4 photosynthetic cycle, similar to grassland currently found in the EEP.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar alterações nos teores de C e N e abundância natural de δ13C e δ15N de um Cambissolo Háplico Tb distrófico em uma área com sistema agroflorestal (SAF). Em cada área de estudo foram coletadas amostras de solo, em 8 profundidades de 0,0–1,0 m. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas 2 × 8 (2 áreas florestais e 8 profundidades), com três repetições. Com exceção da camada superficial do solo (0,0-0,10), a área de SAF está preservando os teores de C e aumentando os teores de N (0,2-1,0) em relação à mata nativa. Ambas as áreas avaliadas apresentaram sinais de abundância natural de δ13C referente a plantas do ciclo fotossintético C3, e a área de mata nativa apresentou nas camadas superficiais (0,0-0,20) maiores valores de δ15N, demonstrando maior decomposição da matéria orgânica.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in C and N levels and in the natural abundance of δ15N and δ13C of a Inceptisol in an agroforestry system (AFS). Soil samples were collected from eight depth levels from 0.0-1.0 m in each studied area. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized 2 × 8 (2 forest areas and 8 depths) split-plot design with three replications. Except for the topsoil (0.0-0.10), the area of this AFS has preserved content of C and increased level of N (0.2-1.0) compared to the Forest. Both areas showed signs of natural abundance of δ13C in plants with C3 photosynthetic pathway, and the forest area presented higher values of δ15N in the superficial layers (0.0-0.20), indicating greater decomposition of organic matter.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as frações húmicas, granulométricas e oxidáveis da matéria orgânica do solo, o conteúdo de matéria orgânica leve no solo, e os teores e estoques de C e N em Latossolo Vermelho, manejado pelos sistemas plantio direto e convencional, para o cultivo de repolho. Áreas de pastagem e de cerrado nativo foram utilizadas como controle. As amostras foram coletadas em 2014, às profundidades 0,0-0,05 e 0,05-0,10 m, após um ciclo de cultivo do repolho sob plantio direto e convencional, em área com longo histórico de cultivo convencional de hortaliças. O sistema plantio direto aumenta os teores de matéria orgânica leve, C e N, assim como os estoques de C e os valores de C orgânico particulado, de C orgânico associado a minerais, e de frações húmicas e oxidáveis da matéria orgânica. O sistema plantio direto melhora a qualidade do solo, em comparação ao plantio convencional, além de proporcionar, para a maioria das variáveis analisadas, maiores valores do que os observados em área de pastagem e valores semelhantes aos da área sob cerrado nativo.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the humic, granulometric, and oxidizable fractions of soil organic matter, the light organic matter content in the soil, and C and N contents and storage in an Oxisol under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems for cabbage cultivation. Pasture areas and native cerrado soil were used as a control. The samples were collected in 2014 at the 0.0-0.05 and 0.05-0.10-m soil depths, after one cabbage crop cycle under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems, in an area with a long history of conventional tillage for vegetable crops. The no-tillage system increases the contents of light organic matter, C and N, as well as C storage and the values of particulate organic C, organic C associated with minerals, and the humic and oxidizable fractions of organic matter. The no-tillage system improves soil quality, in comparison with conventional tillage, besides providing, for most of the variables, higher values than those observed in the pasture area and similar values to those of the area under native cerrado.

ABSTRACT Despite limited geographic expression of Organosols in Brazil, their high carbon storage capacity and natural environmental vulnerability justifies further studies on C and N stocks in these soils and their relationship to the nature of organic matter. Evaluation of physical and chemical properties of organic soils and their ability to store C is important so as to develop sustainable management practices for their preservation. The objectives of the study were to measure the total organic carbon stock (OCst), total nitrogen stock (Nst), and humic fractions in Organosols from different environments and regions of Brazil, and to correlate the data with soil chemical (pH, P, K, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, H+Al, CEC, V) and physical properties (soil bulk density, Bd; organic matter density, OMd; total pore space, TPS; minimum residue, MinR; and proportion of mineral matter, MM), and degree of organic matter decomposition (rubbed fiber content; pyrophosphate index, PyI; and von Post index). For that purpose, 18 Organosol profiles, in a total of 49 horizons, were sampled under different land usage and plant coverage conditions. The profiles were located in the following Brazilian states - Alagoas, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo. The OCst and Nst varied significantly among horizons and profiles. The Organosols exhibited, on average, 203.59 Mg ha-1 OCst and 8.30 Mg ha-1 Nst, and the highest values were found in profiles with pasture usage. The content of the humic fraction (humin, HUM; fulvic acid, FAF; and humic acid, HAF) and C storage varied in the soil horizons and profiles according to the degree of decomposition and other factors of soil formation. The OCst, Nst, OMd and the C stocks in the humic fractions were positively correlated. The values of acidity were lower in the soils with higher contents of mineral material, and low pH values were related to a high C/N ratio. The OCst and Nst were correlated with different soil properties, the most important being the degree of soil organic matter decomposition, which was inversely correlated.

RESUMO O Cerrado é o segundo maior bioma brasileiro, no qual são observadas diferentes feições fitofisionômicas, que podem ser influenciadas por fatores edáficos. Desta forma, este estudo objetivou avaliar a fertilidade e os atributos físicos do solo (análise granulométrica, densidade do solo - Ds e volume total de poros - VTP), os estoques de carbono e nitrogênio e as frações químicas da matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) em áreas de mata mesofítica, cerradão e cerradosensu stricto na estação ecológica de Pirapitinga - MG. O solo das áreas de estudo foi classificado como Latossolo Vermelho. Em cada uma das áreas avaliadas foram coletadas amostras nas camadas de 0-0,05; 0,05-0,1; 0,1-0,2 e 0,2-0,4 m. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado. As áreas de mata mesofítica e cerradão desenvolvem-se em solo com maiores teores de argila em comparação à área de cerrado sensu stricto, indicando que possivelmente solos mais argilosos têm maior capacidade de retenção de água e fornecimento de nutrientes para atender mais adequadamente à demanda dessas vegetações com maior porte. A área de mata mesofítica por apresentar maior deposição de resíduos vegetais e estar em solo de textura argilosa está proporcionando em algumas camadas do solo maiores teores de C orgânico e substâncias húmicas, desencadeando menores valores de densidade do solo, maior volume total de poros e maior disponibilidade de P em relação às demais fitofisionomias estudadas. No entanto, as áreas de cerradão e cerradosensu stricto apresentam maiores valores de Mg, K, pH e menores valores de H+Al e Al em comparação à área de mata mesofítica, o que pode sugerir que estas fitofisionomias se estabelecem preferencialmente nos solos mais férteis do bioma Cerrado. A relação entre a fração ácido húmico e fração ácido fúlvico indica que a vegetação de mata mesofítica apresenta em relação à vegetação de cerradão e cerrado sensu stricto matéria orgânica do solo de melhor qualidade, que permite o estabelecimento de atributos físicos e químicos favoráveis ao desenvolvimento de plantas. Os maiores estoques de carbono são verificados nas vegetações de maior porte, cerradão e mata mesofítica. Entretanto, o maior teor e estoque de nitrogênio do solo ocorrem na área de cerrado sensu stricto.

ABSTRACT Cerrado biome is the second largest Brazilian biome, where different phyto-physiognomical features are observed, which may be influenced by soil factors. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate soil physical and fertility properties (particle size analysis, bulk density - BD and total pore volume - TPV), carbon and nitrogen stocks and chemical fractions of soil organic matter (SOM ) in areas of mesophytic forest, Cerrado and Cerrado sensu stricto in the ecological station of Pirapitinga, Minas Gerais state. The soil was classified as Oxisol and soil samples were collected from the layers 0-0.05, 0.05-0.1, 0.1-0.2, and 0.2-0.4 m. The experimental design was completely randomized. Areas of mesophytic forest and cerrado grow in soil with higher clay compared to the Cerrado sensu stricto, indicating that possibly more clayey soils have higher water holding capacity and nutrient supply to attend the demand more appropriately with larger vegetations. The mesophytic forest area by presenting high waste disposal of plant and be in the clayey soil is in some layers providing higher levels of soil organic C and humic substances, triggering lower values of bulk density, greater total porosity and availability of P in relation to other vegetation types studied. However, the closed areas and Cerrado sensu stricto have higher amounts of Mg, K, and lower pH, H + Al and Al compared to mesophitic forest area, which may suggest that these phytophysiognomies settle preferentially in the most fertile soils of Cerrado biome. The relationship between the humic acid and fulvic acid fraction indicates that the forest vegetation Mesophytic presents for vegetation of Cerrado and Cerrado sensu strictosoil organic matter of great quality, which allows the establishment of physical and chemical attributes favorable to the development of the plant. The largest stocks of carbon are verified in larger vegetation, cerrado and mesophytic forest. However, the higher grade and stock soil nitrogen occur in Cerradosensu stricto.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as formas de ferro, extraídas como ditionito-citrato-bicarbonato de sódio (Fed), oxalato ácido de amônio (Feo) e pirofosfato de sódio (Fep) bem como a relação destas variáveis com os teores carbono orgânico total e a capacidade máxima de adsorção de P (CMAP). Foram selecionadas para estudo áreas sob SPD com diferentes tempos de implantação: SPD com 3 anos (SPD3); SPD com 15 anos (SPD15) e SPD com 20 anos (SPD20), sendo estas áreas comparadas a uma área de Cerrado nativo 'stricto sensu' (CE) e uma área de pastagem plantada de Brachiaria decumbens (PA). O solo das áreas de estudo foi classificado como latossolo vermelho distroférrico. Em cada uma das áreas foram coletadas amostras nas profundidades de 0-5; 5-10 cm. Foi observada correlação entre o conteúdo de C e as diferentes formas de Fe em todas as áreas estudadas. Verificou-se correlação positiva e significativa entre os teores de carbono e as formas de ferro (Feo, Feo/Fed e Fep) e negativa com os teores de Fed. As áreas de CE e PA apresentaram a maior CMAP, sendo esta reduzida em função do tempo de adoção do SPD.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the forms of iron extracted as sodium dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (Fed), acid ammonium oxalate (Feo) and sodium pyrophosphate (Fep) and the relationship between these variables and the total organic carbon content and maximum adsorption capacity of P (MACP). The areas selected for this study had been using a no-tillage system (NTS) for varying periods of time: 3 years (NTS3), 15 years (NTS15) and 20 years (NTS20). These areas were compared with an area of native 'Cerrado' (CE) and a pasture area planted with Brachiaria decumbens (PA). The soil of the areas studied was classified as dystrophic oxisol. In each area, samples were collected at 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm. A correlation was observed between the C content and the different forms of Fe in the areas studied. There was a significant positive correlation between the carbon content and the forms of iron (Feo, Feo/Fed and Fep) and a negative correlation with the level of Fed. The areas of CE and PA had the highest MACP, which diminished as the amount of time of NTS use increased.

A conversão do cerrado nativo em sistemas agropecuários pode alterar com o passar dos anos de cultivo os teores de C e N, bem como o sinal isotópico do δ13C e δ15N do solo. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os teores de C, N e abundância natural de δ13C e δ15N no perfil do solo em uma cronossequência de agricultura sob sistema plantio direto (SPD) no cerrado goiano. Para isso, em Montividiu, GO, foram selecionadas áreas sob SPD com diferentes tempos de implantação: SPD com três anos de implantação (SPD3), SPD com 15 anos de implantação (SPD15) e SPD com 20 anos de implantação (SPD20), as quais foram comparadas com áreas de cerrado nativo (CE) e pastagem (PA). Foram coletadas amostras de solo nas profundidades de 0,00-0,05; 0,05-0,10; 0,10-0,20; 0,20-0,30; 0,30-0,40; 0,40-0,50; 0,50-0,60; 0,60-0,80; e 0,80-1,00 m. O solo das áreas de estudo foi classificado como Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico. O manejo do solo sob SPD após 20 anos aumentou os teores de C e N na camada superficial do solo (0,00-0,05 m), em relação às outras áreas avaliadas. Nas demais profundidades avaliadas, observou-se que está ocorrendo aumento nos teores C e N com o passar dos anos de adoção do SPD (três para 15 anos); no entanto, tais áreas ainda não foram capazes de recuperar os teores desses elementos em relação à vegetação nativa de CE. Por meio dos resultados de δ13C, pôde-se constatar que a origem da MOS nas áreas de SPD é referente à plantas do ciclo fotossintético C4. Verificou-se que até os 0,30 m do perfil do solo os resultados de δ13C estão reduzindo com o passar dos anos de adoção do SPD. Os menores e maiores valores de δ15N foram encontrados nas áreas de CE e PA, SPD3, enquanto SPD15 e SPD20 apresentaram valores intermediários de δ15N, em relação às demais áreas avaliadas.

The conversion of native vegetation in agricultural systems can change with over the years of growing levels of C and N as well as the isotopic signal of 13C and 15N of soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contents of C and N and the natural abundance of δ13C and δ15N in the soil profile in a chronosequence of no-tillage agriculture (NT) in the Cerrado (tropical savanna) of Goias (GO), Brazil. For this purpose, areas under NT in Montividiu (GO) with the following characteristics were selected: three years under NT (NT3), fifteen years under NT (NT15), and 20 years under NT (NT20). They were compared to areas of native vegetation (CE) and pasture (PA). Soil samples were collected at depths of 0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20, 0.20-0.30, 0.30-0.40, 0.40-0.50, 0.50-0.60, 0.60-0.80, and 0.80-1.00 m. The soil of the studied area was classified as a Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico (Oxisol). Soil management in NT after 20 years increased the C and N contents in the surface soil layer (0.00-0.05 m) in relation to other areas assessed. In the other depths evaluated, there has been an increase in C and N contents according to the years since adoption of NT (3 to 15 years); however, these areas have not yet been able to recover the contents of these elements in relation to native vegetation (CE). From the δ13C, it can be seen that the origin of soil organic matter (SOM) in the NT areas is related to plants of the C4 photosynthetic pathway. However, it was found that up to 0.30 m depth, the δ13C have been decreasing over the years since adoption of NT. The lowest values of δ15N were found in the areas of CE and PA, and the highest values were found in NT3, while the NT15 and NT20 areas had intermediate values of δ15N compared to the other areas assessed.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as frações oxidáveis de C orgânico em um Latossolo Vermelho em área de cerrado sob sistema de plantio direto (SPD) com diferentes anos de implantação, e compará-las a áreas de cerrado nativo e pastagem. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de cinco áreas: cerrado nativo (CE) "stricto sensu"; pastagem plantada (PA) com Brachiaria decumbens; SPD com 3 (SPD3); SPD com 15 (SPD15) e SPD com 20 (SPD20) anos de implantação.Foi observado aumento na massa dos resíduos vegetais da superfície do solo em função do tempo de implantação do SPD. Verifica-se aumento nos teores de C e no índice de manejo de carbono (IMC) em função do tempo de implantação do SPD. Na área de SPD20 quantificaram-se maiores valores de C em relação à área de cerrado. De maneira geral, verifica-se aumento das frações lábeis e estáveis da MOS em função do tempo de implantação do SPD, sendo que as áreas SPD15 e SPD20 apresentam teores de C dentre as frações semelhantes e/ou superiores respectivamente a área de CE. Independentemente da área avaliada, observa-se que há predomínio das frações mais estáveis da MOS (F3+F4). A área de PA devido a um manejo inadequado apresenta-se em estádio de degradação mais avançado quando comparado às demais áreas, pois se observa uma grande redução dos teores de C total, C das frações mais lábeis e estáveis da MOS, bem como menores valores de IMC.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidizable fractions of organic C in a Red Latosol in an area of cerrado under a no-tillage system (NT) with different years of implantation, and to compare them to areas of native cerrado and pasture. The experimental design used was completely randomized with five replications. Treatments consisted of five areas: native cerrado (NC) "stricto sensu"; pasture (PA) planted with Brachiaria decumbens; NT with 3 (NT3); NT with 15 (NT15) and NT with 20 (NT20) years of implantation. There was an increase in the ground-surface mass of vegetable residue as a function of the time of implantation of the NT. An increase in C content and the carbon-management index (CMI) can be seen as a function of the time of implantation of the NT. In the area of NT20 the greatest values of C were quantified, compared to the area of cerrado. In general, there are increased labile and stable MOS fractions as a function of the implantation time of the NT, while the areas SPD15 and SPD20 present a C content among fractions, respectively similar and/or superior to the area of NC. Regardless of the area evaluated, a predominance of the more stable MOS fractions (F3+F4) can be seen. The area of PA, due to inadequate management, shows a more advanced stage of degradation when compared to the other areas, as there is a large reduction in the levels of total C, of C in the more labile and stable MOS fractions, as well as lower CMI values.

O sistema plantio direto (SPD), em função de seu tempo de estabelecimento, pode promover aumento na quantidade de resíduos vegetais adicionados à superfície do solo e, consequentemente, modificações nos seus atributos químicos e físicos. O trabalho teve por objetivo quantificar a deposição de resíduos vegetais na superfície do solo (RVS) e as modificações nos teores de matéria orgânica leve (MOL), nos estoques de carbono e nitrogênio, nos teores de fósforo remanescente (Prem) e nos atributos físicos do solo - densidade de partículas (Dp), densidade do solo (Ds) e volume total de poros (VTP) -, bem como avaliar a origem do carbono por meio de técnicas isotópicas (13C). Para isso, em Montividiu (GO) foram selecionadas áreas sob SPD com diferentes tempos de implantação: SPD com três anos de implantação (SPD3), SPD com 15 anos de implantação (SPD15) e SPD com 20 anos de implantação (SPD20), as quais foram comparadas a uma área de Cerrado nativo stricto sensu (CE) e a uma área de pastagem plantada de Brachiaria decumbens (PA). Em cada uma das áreas, foram coletadas amostras nas profundidades de 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm. O solo das áreas de estudo foi classificado como Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado. Foi observado aumento nos teores de RVS, MOL, VTP, Prem, C e N em função do tempo de implantação do SPD. A área de SPD com 20 anos apresentou maiores valores de C e N e valores semelhantes de Ds e MOL, em relação ao CE. As análises de 13C demonstraram que as leguminosas estão contribuindo de forma significativa para a composição da matéria orgância nas áreas sob SPD. Nas áreas sob SPD, verificou-se aumento dos valores de estoque de C e de N em função do tempo de implantação em todas as profundidades analisadas; as áreas SPD15 e SPD20 apresentaram nas camadas superficiais valores semelhantes e, ou, superiores aos da área de CE. A área de PA apresentou os piores valores dos atributos analisados, demonstrando estar em estádio mais avançado de degradação.

According to the time of management implementation, the amount of crop residues added to the soil surface can increase in no-tillage systems (NTS) and promote changes in the chemical and physical soil properties. The objective of this study was to quantify the deposition of plant residues on the soil surface (RSS) and variations in the light organic matter (LOM), in C and N stocks, remaining phosphorus (Prem), the soil physical characteristics (particle density (PD), bulk density (BD) and total pore volume (TPV)), and to evaluate the origin of C by isotopic techniques (13C). For this purpose, areas under no-tillage (NTS) after different periods of implementation were selected in Montividiu (GO) as follow: NTS after 3 years (NTS3), NTS after 15 years (NTS15) and NTS after 20 years of implementation (NTS20). These areas were compared with an area of native cerrado "stricto sensu" (CE) and with a planted pasture of Brachiaria decumbens (PA). In each of these areas, soil samples were collected (layers 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm). The soil of the study areas was classified as Rhodic Hapludox. The experiment was evaluated in a completely randomized design. Increased levels of RSS, LOM, PTV, Prem, C, and N were observed as a function of time of NTS implementation. The NTS20 area showed higher C and N values than the CE area and similar values of BD and LOM. The 13C analysis showed that legumes contribute significantly to the organic matter content in the NTS areas, where increases in the carbon and nitrogen stocks as function of the time of implementation were also observed in all layers analyzed. In the surface layer of the areas NTS15 and NTS20 these values were similar and, or, higher than under CE. The analyzed properties had poorest values in the PA area, indicating an advanced stage of degradation.
