ABSTRACT The tropical forest is extremely exploited and fragmented, making it essential to collect native seeds to meet the growing demand for its restoration and maintenance of biodiversity. Thus, the objective is to select potential forest fragments with a higher degree of conservation for seed harvesting, through the use and association of landscape ecology with fuzzy logic. The study was carried out in the watershed of the Itapemirim river. The stages of selection and photointerpretation of the images were carried out; error determination; application of landscape ecology metric indices; application of fuzzy logic in a computational application and validation of the methodology in loco. 7,515 forest fragments were determined, corresponding to 19.21% of the study area, with 89.53% of hits. Fragments smaller than 5 ha are the most fragile and are at risk of extinction, while those larger than 300 ha have a lower risk of extinction, even with the increase in the edge. With the application of fuzzy logic, the mean was between 0.15, standard deviation of 0.24 and the coefficient of variation at 161.73%. Scenario 1 (FLONA of Pacotuba), has 10.25% of families, 25.92% of genera and 33.62% of species more than Scenario 2 (PEAMA Ifes Campus of Alegre), among the identified individuals. The association of landscape ecology techniques and fuzzy logic made it possible to identify fragments with a higher degree of conservation, with potential for harvesting forest seeds.

RESUMO A floresta tropical é extremamente explorada e fragmentada, sendo imprescindível a coleta de sementes nativas, a fim de atender a crescente demanda para sua restauração e manutenção da biodiversidade. Dessa forma, objetiva-se selecionar fragmentos florestais potenciais com maior grau de conservação para a colheita de sementes, via utilização e associação da ecologia da paisagem à lógica Fuzzy. O estudo foi realizado na bacia hidrográfica do rio Itapemirim. Foram realizadas as etapas de seleção e fotointerpretação das imagens; determinação do erro; aplicação dos índices métricos de ecologia da paisagem; aplicação da lógica Fuzzy em aplicativo computacional e validação da metodologia in loco. Foram determinados 7.515 fragmentos florestais, correspondendo a 19,21% da área de estudo, com 89,53% de acertos. Os fragmentos menores que 5 ha são os mais frágeis e possuem risco de extinção, enquanto os maiores que 300 ha possuem menor risco de extinção, mesmo com o aumento da borda. Com a aplicação da lógica Fuzzy, a média ficou entre 0,15, desvio padrão de 0,24 e o coeficiente de variação em 161,73 %. O Cenário 1 (FLONA de Pacotuba) possui 10,25% de famílias, 25,92 % de gêneros e 33,62% de espécies a mais que o Cenário 2 (PEAMA Ifes Campus de Alegre), entre os indivíduos identificados. A associação das técnicas de ecologia da paisagem e lógica Fuzzy possibilitou identificar os fragmentos em maior grau de conservação, com potencial para colheita de sementes florestais.

Resumo Para explorar os atributos físicos e químicos do solo e espacializar o estoque de carbono orgânico do solo em um trecho de Floresta Atlântica (Estacional Semidecidual Submontanal, Espírito Santo, Brasil), este estudo avaliou quatro camadas de solo (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm), as inter-relações dos atributos físicos e químicos e a espacialização do estoque de carbono orgânico do solo aplicando a interpolação por “cokrigagem”. Foram coletadas 12 amostras em cada camada de solo, sendo determinados os teores de nutrientes, a densidade do solo, a textura e o teor de carbono orgânico, sendo também determinado o estoque de carbono. Os atributos do solo mais significativos na variação dos dados foram verificados pela ordenação por Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP) agrupando as parcelas semelhantes quanto às características físicas e químicas. Com base na autocorrelação espacial dos atributos do solo, os dados do modelo de elevação digital (altitude e declividade) para o local estudado foram combinados para explorar a relação de coordenadas entre os parâmetros do terreno e o estoque de carbono orgânico do solo. Foi verificado o aumento da fertilidade do solo paralelo ao aumento do teor de matéria orgânica, auxiliando no entendimento das diferenças e similaridades dos sítios identificados no campo. Observa-se diferença espacial no estoque de carbono orgânico do solo, sendo o maior verificado nas áreas de menor declividade e altitude.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the physical and chemical attributes of the soil and to spatialize the soil organic carbon stock in a stretch of Atlantic Forest by evaluating four soil layers and the interrelationships of physical and chemical attributes as well as the spatialization of soil organic carbon stock by applying cokriging interpolation. Thus, 12 soil samples were collected in a soil layer, and the nutrient content, soil density, texture, soil organic carbon content and the soil carbon stock were determined. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) grouped the most similar plots in terms of physical and chemical characteristics. Based on the spatial autocorrelation of the soil attributes, the digital elevation model data (altitude and slope) for the studied site were combined to explore the coordinate relationship between the terrain parameters and the soil organic carbon stock. We verified an increase in the soil fertility parallel to the increase in the organic matter content in the soil, helping to understand the differences and similarities of the identified sites in the field. There is a spatial difference in the soil organic carbon stock, with the largest being observed in areas of lower slope and altitude. The physical and chemical attributes of the soil in the Atlantic Forest varied according to the sampled points, being strongly related to the relief. The spatial variability altered soil organic carbon stocks in the forest under study.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a florística e estrutura da regeneração natural do estrato arbustivo-arbóreo em um fragmento florestal no sul do estado do Espírito Santo, bem como verificar a interação da vegetação com algumas variáveis ambientais selecionadas. Foi desenvolvido na Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural (RPPN) Cafundó, em doze subparcelas de 1 x 20 m, onde foram delimitadas três classes de tamanho - classe 1 (plantas entre 0,1 e 1 m de altura), classe 2 (1,1 e 3 m de altura) e classe 3 (altura maior que 3 m e menor que 5 cm DAP). A RPPN possui uma área de 517 ha, onde 358 ha foram utilizados para alocação das unidades experimentais. Os indivíduos foram classificados quanto ao grupo ecológico e síndrome de dispersão. Foi calculado o índice de diversidade, equabilidade, densidade e frequência das espécies e a similaridade de Sorensen entre o estrato regenerante e adulto. A interação do estrato regenerante com variáveis ambientais foi realizada através da Análise de Correspondência Canônica. Foram amostrados 678 indivíduos, distribuídos em 73 espécies/morfoespécies, sendo Actinostemon klotzschii e Goniorrhachis marginata as mais abundantes. A similaridade entre regeneração e estrato arbóreo foi 29%. O grupo ecológico e a dispersão predominante, respectivamente, foram secundária tardia e zoocoria. A diversidade de Shannon (H’) foi 3,13 e equabilidade de 0,72. As espécies Goniorrhachis marginata, Actinostemon klotzschii e Psychotria carthagenensis tiveram correlação com carbono (C), fósforo (P), declividade e cobertura de dossel. Concluiu-se que a regeneração natural na área estudada possui elevada riqueza e densidade de indivíduos quando comparado a estudos desenvolvidos na mesma fitofisionomia. As variáveis ambientais estudadas parecem ter pouca influência na distribuição das espécies da regeneração natural, uma vez que apenas o carbono, o fósforo, a declividade e a cobertura do dossel explicaram parte da distribuição das espécies no fragmento.

Abstract This paper aims to evaluate the floristic and structure of natural regeneration in a forest fragment located in the south of Espírito Santo State, as well as to verify the interaction between vegetation and environmental variables. The study was developed in Private Reserve of Nature Patrimony (RPPN) Cafundó, with twelve sample units (1 x 20m), where three classes based on size - Class 1 (plants between 0.1 and 1m high), Class 2 (plants between 1.1 and 3m high) and Class 3 (plants higher than 3m and less than 5cm DBH). This RPPN has a total area of 517ha, which approximately 358ha were used for allocation of experimental units. Individuals were classified according to ecological group and dispersion syndrome. Floristic diversity, equability, density and frequency of species were also calculated. Analysis of natural regeneration, floristic similarity between natural regeneration and the upper layer as well the regenerating layer interaction with environmental variables was performed through Canonical Correspondence Analysis. We found 678 individuals distributed in 73 morphospecies/species, with Actinostemon klotzschii and Goniorrhachis marginata being the most abundant. Sorensen's similarity between natural regeneration and the adult tree layer was 29%. The most dominant ecological groups were late secondary, while zoochory was the predominant dispersion syndrome among existing species. Shannon diversity index was 3.13 and equability 0.72. Goniorrhachis marginata, Actinostemon klotzschii and Psychotria carthagenensis species had correlation with carbon (C), phosphorus (P), declivity and canopy cover. We concluded that the natural regeneration component within studied area has a high richness and density of individuals when compared to studies developed in similar phytophysiognomies. The studied environmental variables seem to have little influence on the distribution of natural regeneration species in the RPPN, once only carbon, phosphorus, declivity and canopy cover have explained the species distribution within fragment.

Resumo A dinâmica de serapilheira é um dos processos fundamentais para o crescimento e manutenção de fragmentos florestais nativos, sendo considerada a principal via da ciclagem de nutrientes em florestas. Dessa forma, estudos sobre produção de serapilheira e conteúdo de nutrientes fornecem subsídios que proporcionam um melhor entendimento da dinâmica dos nutrientes. O objetivo do estudo foi identificar a sazonalidade e as condições meteorológicas que influenciam na quantifidade e no retorno de nutrientes através da serapilheira em um fragmento de Floresta Atlântica. A amostragem de serapilheira foi realizada mensalmente em 12 parcelas permanentes. Cada parcela continha 5 coletores distribuídos sistematicamente. A serapilheira foi classificada, quantificada a massa seca e nutrientes nas frações folhas e galhos + miscelânea. Foi constatado comportamento sazonal com as maiores deposições na estação do inverno. A produção média anual foi de 6,78 Mg ha-1, sendo 64,9% composta por folhas. A entrada média de nutrientes anual foi de 135.1, 115.7, 39.7, 23.5, 17.6 e 4.6 kg ha-1 para Ca, N, K, Mg, S e P respectivamente. A variável meteorológica precipitação apresentou influencia no padrão de deposição. O aumento na eficiência do uso de nutrientes no segundo ano em comparação com o primeiro indica que as plantas estrategicamente podem estar retranslocando quantidades relativas de seus nutrientes sob condições de estresse hídrico.

Abstract Litter dynamics is one of the fundamental processes for the growth and maintenance of native forest fragments, being considered the main pathway for nutrient cycling in forests. Studies on litter production and nutrient content therefore provide insights that provide a better understanding of nutrient dynamics. This study identifies the seasonality and meteorological conditions that influence the quantity and return of nutrients through litter in an Atlantic Forest fragment. Litter sampling was carried out monthly in 12 permanent plots. Each plot contained 5 littertraps distributed systematically. The litter was classified, and the dry mass and nutrients in the leaves and branches and miscellaneous fractions was quantified. Seasonal behavior was observed, with the highest depositions in the winter season. The average annual production was 6.78 Mg ha-1, with 64.9% being composed of leaves. The mean annual nutrient intake was 135.1, 115.7, 39.7, 23.5, 17.6 and 4.6 kg ha-1 for Ca, N, K, Mg, S and P, respectively. The meteorological variable precipitation influenced the deposition pattern. The increase in nutrient-use efficiency in the second year compared to the first indicates that plants strategically may be re-translocating relative amounts of their nutrients under water stress conditions.

Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate Pseudobombax aff. petropolitanum (PP) contribution on annual fine litterfall, carbon content, and nutrient concentration, compared to other woody species (OS) on a neotropical inselberg in Espírito Santo state, Brazil. Annual fine litterfall was systematic monthly collected (November 2011-October 2012) by means of 15 littertraps (0.25 m2) placed in five transects, oven-dried (65 °C, 72 h), weighed, and C content and nutrients concentration (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) were estimated. PP performed lower litterfall, C content, and nutrient concentration excepting higher K concentration, compared to OS. The results suggested that PP performed higher nutrient conservation, which indicated its potential in restoring degraded areas observed in the inselberg.

Resumo As listas florísticas regionais são essenciais para definir estratégias de conservação da biodiversidade e importantes instrumentos para preencher lacunas de conhecimento. O objetivo foi fornecer uma base de dados a partir de uma listagem de espécies como ferramenta para conservação e manejo do ecossistema. Apresentamos aqui os resultados de um inventário de plantas vasculares em uma Floresta Ombrófila Densa no Parque Nacional Caparaó e abordamos suas implicações para a conservação e manejo desta área protegida e das comunidades do entorno. Realizamos expedições botânicas entre os anos de 2012 e 2017 na vertente capixaba dessa floresta ombrófila no parque. Foram encontradas 361 espécies distribuídas em 78 famílias e 181 gêneros. A área de estudo abriga novas espécies para ciência que foram recentemente descritas em outras publicações fora dessa localidade, e 4 novos registros para o Espírito Santo; também 43 espécies listadas em diferentes categorias de ameaça de extinção (VU, EN, CR) e outras 190 categorizadas com menores preocupações (LC e NT). As famílias com maior riqueza de espécies foram: Melastomataceae (41 spp.), Lauraceae e Myrtaceae (30), Orchidaceae (26), Rubiaceae (24) e Asteraceae (20). Nossos resultados contribuem para um maior conhecimento da flora do Parque, dos ambientes montanos no Brasil e da vegetação do Espírito Santo, além de demonstrar a importância dessa área protegida para a conservação da biodiversidade da Mata Atlântica.

Abstract Regional floristic lists are essential for defining biodiversity conservation strategies and are key to assist in filling knowledge gaps. They aim to provide a data source for applying tools to reduce extinction rates and to conserve ecosystems. Herein we present the results of an inventory of vascular plants in a rainforest in the Caparaó National Park (CNP) and approach their implications for conservation and management of this protected area and the surrounding communities. We conducted botanical expeditions between the years 2012 and 2017 in a montane and upper-montane forest of the CNP. We found 361 species distributed in 78 families and 181 genera. The study area is home to new species for science that have recently been described in other publications outside that location, and 4 new records for Espírito Santo State; also 43 species listed in different extinction threat categories (VU, EN and CR) and another 190 categorized with lesser concerns (LC and NT). The families with the highest species richness were: Melastomataceae (41 spp.), Lauraceae and Myrtaceae (30), Orchidaceae (26), Rubiaceae (24), and Asteraceae (20). Our results contribute to greater knowledge of the CNP flora, of the montane environments in Brazil and the vegetation of Espírito Santo state, in addition to demonstrate the importance of this protected area to the conservation Atlantic Forest biodiversity.

ABSTRACT We focus on understanding the influence of environmental variables on ecological processes, and such a focus promotes an integrated view of forest ecological patterns. The following questions were made: Do variations in temperature, precipitation, litterfall deposition and light intensity influence the density and composition of seed rain in a stretch of the Montane Atlantic Rainforest? Is there a pattern for dispersal syndrome in Montane Atlantic,? Over a period of 12 months, the deposition patterns of seed rains were evaluated. Seed density and species richness correlated with temperature and precipitation, with species richness decreasing with increasing altitude and seed density increasing as a function of the light incidence. Seed rain followed a seasonal deposition pattern with higher seed density and species richness in the higher rainfall period. Increasing trend in seed density was found in mountainous areas with northern and northeastern aspects (higher light incidences).

ABSTRACT In this study, vegetation reproduction has been investigated in order to understand aspects of speciation, structuring and composition of plant communities. Thus, we sought to characterize the frequency of sexual systems from species recorded in seed rain occurring in a tropical rainforest (Atlantic Forest) in Caparaó National Park, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. We collected the seed rain for twelve months, classified and recorded the species for: sexual system; pollination and dispersion syndrome; and fruit type. Then we measured the correlation between these attributes through correspondence analysis. Regarding sexual systems, 71% were hermaphrodites, 13% dioecious, and 11% monoecious. Hermaphrodites are best associated with pollination, dispersion and fruit types, represented by 65% of data variance. This study may contribute to elaborating management and conservation programs taking into account the interaction of plants with the local fauna.

Resumo Inventários florísticos realizados ao sul do estado do Espírito Santo nos últimos anos têm auxiliado a preencher lacunas de coleta de plantas especialmente em áreas de difícil acesso, como a região do Caparaó. Estes estudos resultaram na descoberta de sete espécies de Angiospermas, de ocorrência previamente desconhecida para o estado, coletadas nas Serras do Caparaó e do Valentim. Os materiais coletados foram depositados no herbário VIES. A distribuição geográfica global foi mapeada por meio dos dados obtidos nos sítios Herbário Virtual Reflora e Flora do Brasil 2020. Os sete novos registros aqui reportados para o Espírito Santo pertencem a sete famílias diferentes de Angiospermas: Annonaceae (Guatteria pohliana), Apocynaceae (Peplonia adnata), Asteraceae (Mikania clematidifolia), Cunoniaceae (Weinmannia pinnata), Melastomataceae (Leandra quinquedentata e Pleroma foveolatum) e Ochnaceae (Ouratea campos-portoi). São fornecidos diagnoses das espécies, mapas com a distribuição global atualizada e comentários sobre os ambientes de ocorrência das espécies estudadas. Além de prover informações atualizadas ao Projeto Flora do Espírito Santo, esses dados poderão ser utilizados pelos taxonomistas para atualização do sítio Flora do Brasil 2020. Isto será especialmente útil para aquelas famílias que ainda não estão sendo monografadas na Flora do Espírito Santo.

Abstract Floristic inventories carried out in the south of the Espírito Santo state in recent years have helped to fill gaps in plant collection, especially in difficult access areas such as the Caparaó region. These studies resulted in the discovery of seven species of Angiosperms previously unknown to the state, collected in the Caparaó and Valentim highlands. The voucher specimens are housed at VIES herbarium. The global geographic distribution was obtained from the Herbário Virtual Reflora and Flora do Brasil 2020 sites. The seven new records reported for the Espírito Santo belongs to seven different families of Angiosperms: Annonaceae (Guatteria pohliana), Apocynaceae (Peplonia adnata), Asteraceae (Mikania clematidifolia), Cunoniaceae (Weinmannia pinnata), Melastomataceae (Leandra quinquedentata e Pleroma foveolatum) e Ochnaceae (Ouratea campos-portoi). Diagnoses based on species morphology, maps with updated global distribution and comments about the environment of the studied species are provided. In addition to providing up-to-date information to the Flora of Espírito Santo Project, this data can be used by taxonomists to update the Flora do Brasil 2020 site. This will be especially useful for those families who are not yet being monographed in the Flora of Espírito Santo.

Resumo Comunidades florestais são ambientes dinâmicos, nas quais processos de sucessão ocorrem naturalmente, podendo conduzir à maturidade da floresta. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a estrutura do componente arbustivo-arbóreo de um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual e caracterizar o seu estágio sucessional. O estudo foi realizado no município de Alegre, Espírito Santo, na ARIE Laerth Paiva Gama. A amostragem de todos os indivíduos com DAP ≥ 5 cm foi realizada por meio de pontos-quadrantes. Além dos parâmetros ecológicos foi obtida a estrutura diamétrica para a comunidade. As espécies foram classificadas quanto ao grupo ecológico em pioneiras, secundárias iniciais e secundárias tardias, e quanto ao grau de ameaça de extinção. Foram registradas 112 espécies, 81 gêneros e 34 famílias, das quais se destacaram em Valor de Importância Pseudopiptadenia contorta (15,33), Apuleia leiocarpa (5,08), Acosmium lentiscifolium (4,42) e Parapiptadenia pterosperma (4,30). O índice de Shannon foi de 4,17 e a equabilidade de 0,87, sendo considerados valores elevados para florestas estacionais semideciduais. Com relação à avaliação dos grupamentos ecológicos, as secundárias tardias e iniciais se destacaram em riqueza, no entanto as iniciais foram mais abundantes na comunidade. Deste modo, o remanescente florestal estudado pode ser caracterizado como pertencente ao estágio sucessional inicial-intermediário.

Abstract Forest communities are dynamic environments in which succession processes occur naturally, may lead to the maturity of the forest. The objective of this study was to evaluate the structure of the woody component of a fragment of semideciduous forest and characterize their successional stage. The study was conducted in the municipality of Alegre, Espirito Santo, in ARIE Laerth Paiva Gama. The sampling of all individuals with DBH ≥ 5 cm was performed by points quadrants. In addition to the ecological parameters it was obtained diameter structure to the community. The species were classified according to environmental group in pioneers, early secondary and late secondary, and the degree of threat of extinction. Were recorded the 112 species, 81 genera and 34 families, of which have excelled in importance value were Pseudopiptadenia contorta (15.33), Apuleia leiocarpa (5.08), Acosmium lentiscifolium (4.42) and Parapiptadenia pterosperma (4.30). The Shannon index was 4.17 and the evenness of 0.87 and are considered high values for semideciduous forests. As to the evaluation of ecological groups, late and early secondary stood out in wealth, however initials were more abundant in the community. Thus, the remaining forest studied can be characterized as belonging to the initial-intermediate stage succession.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar o banco de sementes no solo de diferentes estádios sucessionais de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual e de pastagem abandonada, a fim de compreender o potencial de regeneração natural destas áreas. Em cada estádio sucessional, denominados de floresta em estádio avançado de regeneração (FEA), floresta em estádio médio de regeneração (FEM) e pastagem (PAS), foram coletadas 30 amostras de solo na estação chuvosa e seca, para avaliar a heterogeneidade quali-quantitativa sazonal. As espécies foram classificadas quanto à forma de vida, grupo sucessional e síndrome de dispersão. O número de indivíduos germinados foi significativamente maior (p < 0,001) na FEM e na estação chuvosa (15.949 ind.). Já a riqueza foi maior na área de pastagem (79 espécies), havendo diferença significativa apenas entre os ambientes. A maioria das espécies é herbácea (49,5%), pioneiras (76,5%) e a zoocoria foi a principal síndrome de dispersão (49% das espécies). Os resultados mostram que o banco de sementes do trecho de floresta em estádio avançado de regeneração possui maior potencial de resiliência, pois é formado por diferentes formas de vida e, principalmente, por espécies secundárias iniciais e tardias.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to characterize the seed bank in the soil of different successional stages of Seasonal Semideciduous Forest and abandoned pasture in order to understand the natural regeneration potential of these areas. At each successional stage, 30 samples of soil were collected in the rainy and dry seasons to evaluate the qualitative heterogeneity of the forest, at the regeneration stage (FEA) forest, intermediate regeneration stage forest (ISF) and pasture (PAS). The species were classified according to the life form, successional group and dispersion syndrome. The number of individuals germinated was significantly higher (p < 0.001) in the ISF and in the rainy season (15,949 individuals). Richness was higher in the pasture area (79 species), with a significant difference only between the environments. Most species are herbaceous (49.5%), pioneers (76.5%) and zoocory was the main dispersion syndrome (49% of species). The results show that seed bank in the fragment of the regeneration advanced stage forest presents the highest resilience potential, since it is formed by different life forms and, mainly, by early and late secondary species.

Este trabalho apresenta a estrutura de trechos de Floresta Estacional Sempre-Verde do Rio das Pacas e avalia a similaridade florística de dez áreas localizadas nas Bacias Hidrográficas Pacuneiro e Pacas, Mato Grosso. Foram alocadas 14 parcelas (25 × 10 m) em cada trecho (nascente, meio e foz), sendo amostrados todos os indivíduos com Circunferência à Altura do Peito > 15 cm e realizada a análise dos parâmetros fitossociológicos, além da similaridadeflorística pelo Índice de Jaccard. A densidade total foi de 1.606 ind./ha. As famílias com maior riqueza foram Anonnaceae (9 espécies); Fabaceae (9); Melastomataceae (6) e Burseraceae (5). As espécies Jacaranda copaia (Aubl.) D. Don, Ocotea caudata (Nees) Mez, Ocotea guianensis Aubl. e Zigia cataractae (Kunth) L. Rico tiveram maior valor de importância. O Índice de Shannon (3,67) e o índice de equabilidade (0,86) mostraram-se semelhantes aos de outras florestas ribeirinhas. As áreas de nascente e meio apresentaram maior similaridade florística (J = 0,71).

This study presents the structure of forest stands of an Evergreen Seasonal Forest along the Pacas River and evaluates the floristic similarity of ten areas located in the Pacuneiro and Pacas river basins in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. Each section (source, middle, and mouth) was divided into 14 plots (25x10 m). All individuals with diameter at breast height (DBH) > 15 cm were sampled. Phytosociological parameters and floristic similarity (by Jaccard index) were analyzed. Total density was 1,606 ind./ha. The most commonly found families in number of species were Anonnaceae (9), Fabaceae (9), Melastomataceae (6), and Burseraceae (5). The species Jacaranda copaia (Aubl.) D. Don, Ocotea caudata (Nees) Mez, Ocotea guianensis Aubl., and Zigia cataractae (Kunth) L. Rico presented the highest importance values. The Shannon (3.67) and equability (0.86) indexes found were similar to those of other riparian forests. The areas of the source and middle of the river showed the highest floristic similarity (J = 0.71).

A síndrome de dispersão de sementes está relacionada à migração das espécies e colonização de novos locais adequados para sobrevivência e reprodução. Foram estudados três estágios sucessionais de mata ciliar no domínio da Mata Atlântica (capoeira = cinco anos de regeneração; secundária = 45 anos de regeneração; e floresta madura = sem intervenção há 35 anos). As espécies foram classificadas nas síndromes de zoocoria, anemocoria e autocoria. A zoocoria predominou nos três estágios da sucessão da mata ciliar, com percentuais variáveis de 82% até 93% das espécies e 47% até 92% dos indivíduos. A segunda síndrome de dispersão mais comum foi a anemocoria, prevalecendo com elevada abundância relativa na capoeira (25% dos indivíduos). A autocoria ocorreu no sub-bosque da floresta madura com indivíduos da espécie Gymnanthes concolor. Aparticipação da zoocoria nos três estágios da sucessão demonstra que a relação planta-animal tem elevada importância para a sucessão florestal em ambiente ciliar na região do extremo sul da Mata Atlântica.

The seed dispersal syndrome is related to species migration and colonization of new sites suitable for survival and reproduction. We studied three succession stages of riparian vegetation in the Atlantic Forest Domain (capoeira = 5 years of regeneration; secondary = 45 years of regeneration; and primary forest (mature) - no intervention in 35 years). The species were classified into syndromes zoochory, anemochory and autochory. The results showed the predominance of zoochory in all the three phases of riparian forest succession, with percentages ranging from 82% to 93% of the species and 47% to 92% of individuals. Anemochory was the second most common dispersal syndrome, with prevailing abundance higher in the capoeira phase (25%). Autochory occurred in mature forest with. Gymnanthes concolor individuals of the understory. The participation of zoochory in the three stages of succession demonstrates that plant-animal relationship is highly important for the riparian forest succession in the extreme south of the Atlantic Forest.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se analisar a estrutura do componente arbóreo de dois trechos de Floresta Estacional Perenifólia na Bacia do rio das Pacas, Querência-MT. Foram distribuídos sistematicamente 200 pontos-quadrante em área preservada e 100 pontos em área alterada. Em cada ponto-quadrante foram medidos e identificados os quatro indivíduos mais próximos do ponto, adotando-se como critério de inclusão o diâmetro na altura de 1,30 m do solo ≥ 10 cm. Utilizou-se o estimador Jackknife 1 para estimar a riqueza específica e o índice de Jaccard para a similaridade florística entre os dois trechos. Embora os dois trechos apresentem históricos de alteração e preservação diferentes, com perfis fitossociológicos distintos, a similaridade florística entre eles foi alta (Cj=0,67), a riqueza específica foi similar (57 espécies na floresta preservada e 52 na alterada) e a espécie com maior Valor de Importância (VI) foi a mesma nos dois trechos - Ocotea leucoxylon (Sw.) Laness. Portanto, conclui-se que, apesar das alterações antrópicas sofridas no passado, o trecho de floresta alterado encontra-se em estágio avançado de regeneração para os padrões das florestas estacionais perenifólias, naturalmente menos diversas que as florestas ombrófilas amazônicas.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the tree component structure of two patches of Evergreen Seasonal Forest in Pacas River Basin in Querência municipality in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The point-centered quarter method was applied to systematically distribute 200 points in pristine forest and 100 points in managed forest. In each quarter, the nearest tree to the sampling point with diameter at breast height equal or greater than 10 cm was included. Estimates of local species richness were obtained with the Jackknife 1 and the Jaccard index was used to determinate floristic similarity between the patches. Although the two forest patches have had distinct historical uses, with tree component structure distinct, the areas presented high floristic similarity (Cj=0.67), the local species richness was alike (57 species in pristine forest and 52 in managed forest) and the species with the highest importance value was the same in the both patches - Ocotea leucoxylon (Sw.) Laness. Despite the anthropogenic disturbances in the past, it is possible to conclude that the managed forest is in an advanced stage of regeneration as expected for the evergreen seasonal forests pattern since this forest is naturally less diverse than the Amazon ombrophilous forests.

Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar a transposição do banco de sementes do solo de dois estádios sucessionais (floresta secundária inicial - Fi e floresta madura - Fm) de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual para um trecho de pastagem abandonada de Melinis minutiflora P. Beauv., na Reserva Mata do Paraíso, em Viçosa, MG. Foram alocadas em cada trecho sucessional de floresta 10 parcelas, bem como retiradas do centro de cada parcela amostras de 1 m² e 5 cm de profundidade de solo superficial, sendo em seguida depositadas em clareiras abertas na pastagem abandonada. No período de maio de 2008 a fevereiro de 2009, foram registrados, nas clareiras cobertas com banco de sementes, 231 indivíduos, distribuídos em 13 famílias, 17 gêneros e 22 espécies. As espécies mais abundantes foram a Vernonia polyanthes, com 108 indivíduos; e Senna multijuga, com 39. As diferenças de riqueza e densidade entre os bancos de sementes oriundos dos dois trechos sucessionais foram significativas a 1% de probabilidade, sendo a maior densidade encontrada no banco de sementes do solo procedente do trecho Fi. As clareiras-testemunha foram colonizadas por herbáceas e, principalmente, pela gramínea exótica Melinis minutiflora. Este estudo mostra que é recomendável e viável a adoção da técnica de transposição do banco de sementes como metodologia de restauração florestal de pastagem abandonada, devendo o banco ser coletado, preferencialmente, em florestas secundárias em estádio sucessional inicial.

This study had as its objective to compare the transposition of the soil seed bank of two successional stages of Seasonal Semideciduous Forest for a Melinis Minutiflora P. Beauv site, in an abandoned pasture of the Mata do Paraíso Forest Reserve, Viçosa, MG. Ten parcels had been placed in each successional site of forest and withdrawals of the center of each parcel sample of 1 m² and 5 cm of superficial depth of soil, being carried afterwards to the abandoned pasture site. Two hundred and thirty one individuals had been registered in the two treatments (initial forest and mature forest), consisting of 31 shrubs and 200 trees. The individuals are distributed by 13 families, 17 kinds and 22 species. The most abundant species had been Vernonia polyanthes, with 108 individuals and Senna multijuga, with 39 individuals. The soil seed bank coming from the site of initial secondary forest (Fi) registered more individuals (120) than the bank coming from the site of the mature forest (Fm), with 111 individuals. The parcels witnesses had been colonized by herbaceous and mainly by the exotic grass Melinis Minutiflora. The number of germinated seeds was only greater in the Fm treatment in the months of july/2008 and january/2009. Significant differences were observed with 1% probability, between the treatments, for the variable wealth of species and density of individuals. The present study showed that it is recommendable and viable to adopt the technique of transposition of the seed bank as a methodology of forest restoration of abandoned pasture.
