ABSTRACT When producing Ilex paraguariensis seedlings through vegetative propagation, selecting the correct populations and genotypes, and obtaining juvenile material, may be fundamental for its success. Therefore, this search aimed to test its vegetative propagation through cutting and rescue using detached branches of different populations in Santa Catarina state, Brazil. Thus, two experiments were installed in September 2019 in order to test: I) the cuttings of four populations belonging to the municipalities of Catanduvas (CT), Painel (PL), Três Barras (TB), and Urupema (UR), using ten randomly chosen genotypes from each, and; II) the epicormic sprouting of detached branches from these same populations. Both experiments were carried out in Lages, Santa Catarina. In February 2020, the cutting was evaluated according to the percentages of survival, callus, rooting, new sprouts, and original leaves permanence. The branches were evaluated every 30 days after storing, observing the percentages of sprouting branches, number of sprouts, and length of sprouts in centimeters. As for cutting, there was a low survival percentage in all populations (<15%), but some genotypes presented greater vigor, such as TB1 (46%), TB7, and TB3 (both 28%). Most live cuttings presented calluses (>70%), characteristic of material of high maturity. Rooting was low for populations (<1.5%) and genotypes (<10%). Branches presented sprouts up to 60 days, with TB presenting the highest total number of sprouts (approximately 300) and the greatest average length (2.8 cm). In general, survival and rooting of cuttings were affected by both populations and genotypes, highlighting TB. A similar response was observed for the branches’ sprouting. New studies with more populations, further analyses of the branches’ characteristics, and better storage conditions are recommended.

RESUMO Quando produzidas mudas de Ilex paraguariensis através da propagação vegetativa, a seleção correta das populações, genótipos, e ser capaz de obter material juvenil, são fundamentais para seu sucesso. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi testar sua propagação vegetativa por estaquia e resgate utilizando galhos destacados de diferentes populações do estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Desta forma, dois experimentos foram instalados em setembro de 2019 para testar: I) a estaquia de quatro populações, pertencentes aos municípios de Catanduvas (CT), Painel (PL), Três Barras (TB) e Urupema (UR), utilizando dez genótipos escolhidos aleatoriamente de cada, e; II) a brotação epicórmica de galhos destacados destas mesmas populações. Ambos os experimentos foram conduzidos em Lages, Santa Catarina. Em fevereiro de 2020, a estaquia foi avaliada de acordo com as porcentagens de: sobrevivência, calos, enraizamento, novas brotações e permanência das folhas originais. Os galhos foram avaliados a cada 30 dias após seu acondicionamento observando as porcentagens de galhos com brotações, número de brotações e comprimento em centímetros. Para a estaquia, houve baixa sobrevivência em todas as populações (<15%), mas com maior vigor em alguns genótipos, tais como TB1 (46%), TB7 e TB3 (ambos 28%). A maior parte das estacas vivas apresentou calo, característico de material de elevada maturidade. O enraizamento foi baixo nos níveis de população (<1,5%) e genótipo (<10%). Os galhos apresentaram brotações até 60 dias, com TB apresentando o maior número total de brotações (aproximadamente 300) e de maior comprimento médio (2,8 cm). Em termos gerais, a sobrevivência e o enraizamento de estacas foram afetados por ambos população e genótipo, destacando-se TB. Uma resposta similar foi observada para a brotação de galhos. Novos estudos contendo mais populações, análises mais aprofundadas das características dos galhos e melhores condições de acondicionamento são recomendadas..

ABSTRACT Ecological restoration mitigates the negative effects of fragmentation and habitat loss. This practice allows the conservation of key species, such as Ocotea porosa, a tree native to the Araucaria Forest and extremely endangered. A key point in restoration projects is the source of seeds, as well as guidelines for collection. When carried out under technical criteria, the collection allows the maintenance of genetic diversity and adaptive potential in restoration plantations. Given the importance of seed source, genetic diversity, and adaptive potential, this study aimed to define areas and criteria for collecting seeds by characterizing the demography, genetics, and reproductive phenology of an O. porosa population. A plot of 16 hectares was installed in the municipality of Passos Maia, Santa Catarina, Brazil, and a demographic survey of trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) > 15 cm was carried out. Indices of diversity and internal genetic structure (IGS) were estimated using allozyme markers. The reproductive phenology of 67 individuals was evaluated during 8 months. The studied population showed a high density of individuals (10.7 ind. ha-1) with normal diametric distribution. The phenological pattern of the species is regular, seasonal, and annual. The evaluated population showed high genetic diversity, high fixation index, and significant IGS up to 80 meters away. Based on these results, the evaluated fragment can be used as a seed collection area. It has high genetic diversity, density, and area size sufficient to contain several demes. In addition, it is highly recommended that the matrices be at least 80 meters apart to avoid the effects of significant IGS.

RESUMO A restauração ecológica é uma forma de mitigar os efeitos negativos da fragmentação e perda de habitat. Essa prática permite a conservação de espécies-chave, como Ocotea porosa, uma árvore nativa da Floresta com Araucária e extremamente ameaçada de extinção. Um ponto fundamental em projetos de restauração é a fonte de sementes bem como as diretrizes para a coleta. Quando realizada sob critérios técnicos, a coleta permite a manutenção da diversidade genética e potencial adaptativo nos plantios de restauração. Diante do exposto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar aspectos da demografia, genética e fenologia reprodutiva de uma população de O. porosa, visando gerar informações para definição de áreas e critérios para a coleta de sementes. Foi instalada uma parcela de 16 hectares no munícipio de Passos Maia, Santa Catarina e realizado levantamento demográfico de árvores com Diâmetro à Altura do Peito (DAP) > 15 cm. Foram estimados índices de diversidade e de estrutura genética interna (EGI), utilizando-se marcadores isoenzimáticos. A fenologia reprodutiva de 67 indivíduos foi avaliada durante 8 meses. O fragmento estudado apresentou uma alta densidade de indivíduos (10,7 ind. ha-1), com uma distribuição diamétrica similar a normal. O padrão fenológico da espécie é sazonal regular e anual. A população avaliada apresentou uma alta diversidade genética, elevado índice de fixação, além de uma EGI significativa até 80 metros de distância. Conclui-se que o fragmento avaliado pode ser utilizado como área de coleta de sementes. O mesmo possui alta diversidade genética, densidade e tamanho de área suficiente para conter várias demes. Além disso, é altamente recomendado que as matrizes tenham no mínimo 80 metros de distância entre si, evitando os efeitos da EGI significativa.

Resumo Este estudo objetivou conhecer a riqueza e estrutura de orquídeas epífitas e seus forófitos, avaliar as interações entre estas duas assembleias, bem como, amostrar as espécies forofíticas e não forofíticas para orquídeas em um remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Mista sob influência nebular no Planalto Serrano Catarinense. A amostragem foi realizada no Complexo Serra da Farofa, em uma parcela de 5.000 m2. A riqueza e estrutura das assembleias arbóreas, forofítica e não forofítica e de orquídeas foram avaliadas. Três espécies de orquídeas foram registradas, colonizando 15 espécies de forófitos. A distribuição espacial dos forófitos e orquídeas foi agregada. Os forófitos colonizados por orquídeas apresentaram altura e Diâmetro a Altura do Peito (DAP), significativamente maiores que demais forófitos. O ritidoma do tipo rugoso foi o mais comum em forófitos colonizados por orquídeas. Drimys angustifolia (Winteraceae) e Myrceugenia euosma (Myrtaceae) foram as principais espécies forofíticas, cruciais para a manutenção da assembleia de orquídeas neste local. As informações deste manuscrito destacam a proteção in situ de Cattleya coccinea, mediante a abundância dela no local. Estas informações irão beneficiar diretamente a conservação e restauração de assembleias biológicas com características semelhantes a este local.

Abstract The objective of this study was to learn about the richness and structure of epiphytic orchids and their phorophytes, to evaluate the interactions between these assemblages, and to sample host and non-host species of orchids in a remnant of Upper-Montane Araucaria Forest (FOMA). Sampling was carried out in the Serra da Farofa Complex, on a plot of 5,000 m2. Three species of orchids were sampled, colonizing 15 species of forophytes. The spatial distribution of phorophytes and orchids was aggregated. Forophytes colonized by orchids had significantly higher height and diameter at breast height (DBH) than other forophytes. Rough-type rhytidome was the most common in orchid-colonized phorophytes. Drimys angustifolia (Winteraceae) and Myrceugenia euosma (Myrtaceae) were the main forophytic species, crucial for the maintenance of orchid assemblage at this site. The information in this manuscript highlights the in-situ protection of Cattleya coccinea by its abundance at the site. This information will directly benefit the conservation and restoration of biological assemblies with characteristics like this site.

Resumo As regiões do meio-oeste do Estado de Santa Catarina possuem grande diversidade de essências florestais com aplicação medicinal, no entanto, muitos desses recursos são mal explorados ou explorados de forma extrativista. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da cobertura do dossel em sistemas agroflorestais no desenvolvimento e produção de compostos secundários em espinheira-santa (Maytenus ilicifolia) e erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis). Duas áreas experimentais foram plantadas seguindo o mesmo espaçamento e arranjo de plantas. Blocos experimentais foram estabelecidos pela poda das plantas pioneiras, com três níveis variáveis de cobertura (0-20 %, 20-40 % e 40-60 %). As plantas de espinheira-santa e erva mate foram monitoradas quanto ao desenvolvimento e as partes vegetativas comercializáveis colhidas, processadas e preparados extratos aquosos para análise de compostos secundários. A erva-mate mostrou a maior produção de biomassa comercializável sob maior cobertura. Por outro lado, a biossíntese do composto secundário teobromina foi maior na cobertura 0-20 %, enquanto o ácido clorogênico e a cafeína foram maiores na cobertura 40-60 %. Espinheira-santa não mostrou diferença no desenvolvimento ou produção entre os tratamentos e a produção de fenóis foi menor em cobertura acima de 40 %.

Abstract The Midwest regions of Santa Catarina state, in Brazil, include a great diversity of forest essences with medicinal application; however, many of these resources are poorly exploited or managed in an extractive manner. This research aimed to assess the effects of canopy cover in agroforestry systems on development and production of secondary composites of espinheira-santa (Maytenus ilicifolia) and yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis). Two experimental areas were planted following the same spacing and arrangement for the plants. Experimental blocks were set up by pruning the pioneer plants, with three variable levels of canopy cover (0-20 %, 20-40 % and 40-60 %). Plants of espinheira-santa and yerba mate were monitored for development and their marketable vegetative parts were harvested, processed and aqueous extracts were prepared for the analysis of presence of secondary compounds. The yerba mate showed the highest production of marketable biomass under high cover. By contrast, the biosynthesis of the secondary compound, theobromine, was greater in the lowest cover, while chlorogenic acid and caffeine were higher in the cover (40-60 %). Espinheira-santa showed no difference in either development or yield among the assessment treatments and, the production of phenols was lower in the cover above 40 %.

Resumo Cedrela fissilis (Vell.) é uma importante espécie madeirável nativa da América do Sul que sofre frequente pressão do extrativismo ilegal. As iniciativas de cultivo comercial acumulam fracassos recorrentes pela ação da broca-do-cedro Hypsipyla grandella (Zeller, 1848). Um dos métodos de manejo utilizados para reduzir os ataques é o plantio em locais sombreados; entretanto, é desconhecido o fator que faz as plantas sombreadas serem menos atacadas. O estabelecimento dos parâmetros de cultivo em tal condição que alie desenvolvimento adequado das plantas e baixos índices de ataque de Hypsipyla grandella foi o objetivo central deste estudo. Foi acompanhado nos dois primeiros anos o crescimento em altura e diâmetro de coleto de mudas de cedro-rosa plantadas em sistemas agroflorestais em que foram testados três níveis de cobertura 0-20%, 20-40% e 40-60% quanto ao efeito no desenvolvimento e frequência de ataque de Hypsipyla grandella. A população do inseto foi monitorada com semioquímicos durante todo o período de ensaios, e foram testadas duas misturas feromonais e um atrativo alimentar. Os resultados de campo indicaram que uma das misturas feromonais foi eficiente para identificação de pequenas variações populacionais de adultos. Quanto ao desenvolvimento das plantas, o tratamento com maior taxa de cobertura apresentou os menores parâmetros em comparação com a cobertura intermediária, e a frequência de ataque de Hypsipyla grandella foi maior no tratamento com menor cobertura (0-20%). Os resultados indicaram que, em cobertura variando de 20 a 40%, foi possível aliar boas taxas de desenvolvimento das plantas com baixa frequência de ataque da broca-do-cedro.

Abstract Cedrela fissilis (Vell.) is an important wood species, native to South America. It is appreciated for its physical characteristics and, therefore, its native specimens are overexploited. Commercial cultivation initiatives have been continuously flawed as a result of the damage caused by mahogany shoot borer Hypsipyla grandella (Zeller, 1848). Planting under shaded sites has been one of the management methods used to reduce insect attacks. However, the reason why mahogany shoot borer does not attack shaded plants as often is still unknown. Therefore, the aim of this research was to find cultivation parameters that could combine proper plant development and low rate of attacks by Hypsipyla grandella. For this purpose, increases in height and shoot diameter of cedar seedlings, planted in agroforestry systems, were monitored for the two first years. Three canopy cover rates, namely, 0-20%, 20-40% and 40-60%, were tested for plant development and frequency of attacks by Hypsipyla grandella. The adult population of the insect was monitored with semiochemicals throughout the experimental period, and two pheromonal blends and one food bait were tested. Field results showed that one of the pheromone blends was efficient in identifying small variations in the population of adult specimens. Regarding to the plant development, the treatment with the highest cover rate showed the lowest parameters compared to the intermediate cover. The frequency of attacks by Hypsipyla grandella was greater in the treatment with the lowest cover (0-20%). The results suggest that in canopy cover, ranging from 20 to 40%, good rates of initial development of plants can be combined with low frequency of attack by Hypsipyla grandella.

ABSTRACT Pioneer species have the potential to colonize disturbed environments, contributing to the establishment of other species and driving the dynamics and advancement of the structure of forest communities. The aim of this study was to assess the evolution of floristic-structural composition in the regenerating stratum of communities formed in the Mimosa scabrella Benth. understory with different ages. The study was carried out in four municipalities located in the Santa Catarina State South Plateau, on communities with different successional ages. The plot method was applied to the survey of all arboreal individuals with height ≥ 10 cm. The floristic-structural patterns found were compatible with the expected trend of Araucaria Forest successional dynamic, showing higher richness and abundance of regenerating individuals in the older understories.

RESUMO: Foi caracterizada a demografia e o padrão espacial de uma população de erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil) abrangendo áreas em diferentes históricos de uso (presença e ausência de gado), em Floresta com Araucárias. A coleta de dados foi realizada em três ha, metade em cada área. Foi avaliada a frequência de indivíduos por classe de altura, padrão de distribuição espacial, distribuição diamétrica (para indivíduos reprodutivos) e razão sexual. O padrão ”J” invertido foi predominante, sendo exclusivo para área com presença de gado, local que apresentou uma menor densidade de indivíduos. O padrão de distribuição espacial predominante foi o agregado, sendo que os indivíduos reprodutivos possuem preferencialmente padrão aleatório nas menores distâncias. Os resultados indicam que a presença do gado altera a densidade de I. paraguariensis e a proporção de indivíduos nas classes demográficas avaliadas.

ABSTRACT: This study characterized the demography and spatial pattern of a yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil) population covering areas with different use histories (Presence and Absence of Cattle) in a Araucaria Forest. Data collection was performed in three ha, half in each area. The frequency of individuals by height, spatial distribution pattern, diameter distribution (for reproductive individuals) and sexual ratio were evaluated. An inverted “J” pattern predominated, being exclusive to an area with Cattle Presence, a place which presented a lower density of individuals. The predominant spatial distribution pattern was aggregated, and the reproductive individuals have a preferentially random pattern at the shortest distances. Results indicated that cattle presence changes the density of I. paraguariensis individuals and the proportion of individuals in the evaluated demographic classes.

ABSTRACT Mimosa scabrella Bentham (bracatinga) is a prominent forest species in the south of the country, due mainly to the high rate of increase, rapid development cycle, and to enable multiple uses of wood production, both for firewood and for more noble purposes. The aim of this work was to estimate the physiological variation among 40 mother trees, based on germinative and biometric characterization of seeds and seedlings. Biometric traits were determined for the size and the fresh mass of 100 seeds, percentage of germination and normal seedlings, germination velocity index, daily mean germination, length, and dry mass of seedlings. Means were compared by the Scott-Knott test at 1% probability and estimates of Pearson correlation coefficients were obtained between all traits. The results indicate the existence of significant variation between arrays of same or different origin for both the biometric features as those from the germination test. The physiological quality of the seeds showed no direct relation to its size.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the vegetation and environmental variable of fragments at different successional stages in a secondary riparian forest in the municipality of Ponte Alta, Santa Catarina state, Brazil (27°29’00” S and 50°17’11” W, WGS84), aiming to list priority variables for monitoring forest succession in riparian forests. For this, two areas were identified: “Reference” (conserved secondary forest) and “Restoration” (secondary forest under passive restoration). The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated the existence of differences in the arboreal community diversity with lower values for the “Restoration” synthesized by PC1. The ground coverage by Ocellochloa rudis (Nees) Zuloaga & Morrone (Poaceae) was mainly in places with higher pH values and ability for effective cation exchange, with no preference of occurrence in either evaluated site. The composition of arboreal diversity was a relevant variable for monitoring passive restoration in this environment.

RESUMO A fragmentação florestal e o uso da matriz da paisagem por culturas agrícolas ou florestais pode alterar a composição de espécies, a ponto que estes não representem mais a estrutura da floresta nativa. Assim, fragmentos podem perder o potencial de fornecimento de propágulos para a restauração quando perdem espécies, ou quando têm a estrutura alterada em função dos efeitos da fragmentação. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o potencial de uma rede de fragmentos florestais remanescentes formados há aproximadamente 50 anos em uma fazenda com povoamento florestal de exóticas, para atuar como fonte de propágulos no processo de regeneração natural. O sítio utilizado pertence a uma Floresta Ombrófila Mista (FOM), utilizado para produção florestal de espécies exóticas, com área de 798 ha, localizada no município de Ponte Alta - SC.: Foram utilizados dados de levantamentos de fitossociologia desta formação para comparação, utilizando-se curvas construídas com base na rarefação de indivíduos, a distribuição das seis espécies mais abundantes, proporção de espécies e indivíduos zoocóricos e análise de similaridade, entre os locais. Os fragmentos florestais apresentaram riqueza de espécies compatíveis e por vezes maior ao que se pode encontrar em outras situações de FOM. Mimosa scabrella foi a espécie mais abundante, diferindo dos demais levantamentos. A quantidade de espécies com mecanismos de dispersão zoocórica foi semelhante ao esperado para FOM, entretanto, a quantidade de indivíduos zoocóricos foi inferior ao que poderia ser esperado. Os resultados indicam que os fragmentos apresentam potencial para atuar como fonte de propágulos no processo de restauração das áreas inseridas na fazenda, contudo, a capacidade pode ser limitada, uma vez que os fragmentos apresentaram algumas características diferentes de outras florestas com Araucárias.

ABSTRACT Forest fragmentation and the use of landscape matrices by agricultural and forest cultures can change the species composition such that these will no longer reflect the structure of the native forests. Thus, fragments can lose their potential to provide propagules for restoration once they lose species, or when its structure is changed due to fragmentation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of a network of remnant forest fragments formed ±60 years ago on a farm to act as a propagule source for a natural regeneration process. The study area belongs to the Ombrophilous Mixed Forest (FOM) formation and is used in the production of exotic forest species. The 798 ha area is located in the Ponte Alta (SC) municipality. Data from phytosociological surveys of this formation were used for comparison, using curves based on the individual rarefaction, distribution of the six most abundant species, proportion of species and zoochoric individual, and similarity analysis in between different areas. The forest fragment showed compatible species richness and at certain times higher than can be found in other FOM situations. Mimosa scabrella was the most abundant species differing from other surveys. The amount of species with zoochoric dispersion mechanisms was similar to what was expected of FOM formations, however, the quantity of zoochoric individuals was below expected. The results indicate that the fragments show potential to act as propagule sources in the restoration process within the farm areas. Nonetheless, the capacity can be rather limited once the fragments show some different characteristics of other Araucaria’s forests.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes temperaturas, tempo de armazenamento e tratamentos pré-germinativos na quebra de dormência de sementes da leguminosa Mimosa scabrella Benth. O trabalho foi realizado na Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina, Lages. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, e as análises de variância foram efetuadas sob o esquema fatorial 2×2×7 (duas temperaturas, dois períodos de armazenamento e sete tratamentos pré-germinativos). A comparação de médias foi feita pelo teste de Scott-knott, a 5% de probabilidade. As temperaturas testadas foram constantes de 25 e 30 ºC, os períodos de armazenamento foram de zero e oito meses de armazenamento e o tratamento pré-germinativo consistiu em imersão em água a 80 ºC por períodos de 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 e 18 horas. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram maior porcentagem de germinação das sementes de bracatinga na temperatura de 30 ºC, com tratamento pré-germinativo de imersão em água a 80 °C, com posterior permanência durante 3 horas, independente do armazenamento.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature, storage time and pre-germination treatments in the germination of Mimosa scabrella Benth seeds. The study was conducted at the University of the State of Santa Catarina, Lages. The experimental design was completely randomized, and analysis of variance was performed under the factorial 2×2×7 (two temperatures, two periods of storage, and seven pre-germination treatments). The average values were compared by Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. The temperatures employed were 25 and 30°C, the storage periods were eight months and no storage and pre-germination treatments were immersion in water at 80°C for periods of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 hours. The results showed higher germination of seeds bracatinga in temperature 30°C, regardless of storage, and immersion for 3 hours in water at 80°C.

RESUMO Este estudo objetivou caracterizar aspectos relacionados à dispersão de propágulos de Myrceugenia euosma (O. Berg) D. Legrand (Myrtaceae) em um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista em Urupema, SC. Para isso, foram avaliados 29 indivíduos reprodutivos quanto à frequência de visitantes, chuva de propágulos, remoção e caracterização de frutos. Registraram-se 140 visitas de pássaros, sem ocorrência de período preferencial. As espécies com maior frequência de visita e maior consumo de frutos foram Zonotrichia capensis (tico-tico) e Stephanophorus diadematus (cabeça-de-velho), consideradas potenciais dispersoras. A frequência de coletores contendo propágulos de M. euosma diminuiu com o aumento da distância, apresentando comportamento distinto em função do tipo de propágulo avaliado. Também foram verificadas sementes intactas junto às fezes das aves nos coletores. A taxa de remoção de frutos depositados no chão foi de 22%, isso demonstra a relevância desse tema no processo de dispersão das espécies, merecendo atenção na realização de estudos futuros.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize aspects related to propagules dispersion of Myrceugenia euosma (Myrtaceae) in a fragment of Mixed Ombrophillous Forest, Urupema, SC. For this, twenty-nine seed tree were evaluated for focal observation of visitors, propagules rain, removal and characterization of fruits. We recorded 140 visits of birds, occurring without preferential visit period. The species with higher visiting frequency and consumption of fruits were Zonotrichia capensis (Rufous-collared Sparrow) and Stephanophorus diadematus (Diademed Tanager), considered as potential dispersers. The frequency of collectors containing M. euosma propagules decreased with increased distance, presenting distinct behavior depending the type of propagule evaluated. We also found intact seeds in bird feces inside the collectors. The removal rate of fruits deposited on the ground was 22%, demonstrating that this is an important topic on the dispersal process and deserves attention in future studies.

Abstract Among the cultivation problems of apple production in Brazil, Apple Leaf Spot (ALS) disease represents one of the main breeding challenges. This study aims at analyzing the genetic diversity among 152 apple scion accessions available at the Apple Gene Bank of EPAGRI, located in Caçador, Santa Catarina/Brazil. Eleven genomic SSR loci were analyzed to assess genetic diversity of ALS resistant and susceptible accessions. Results revealed high genetic diversity of the studied accessions, being 120 exclusive alleles (67 unique) from scion accessions resistant to ALS, and a mean PIC of 0.823. The locus Probability of Identity (I) ranged from 0.017 to 0.089. The combined I was 4.11 x 10-16, and the Power of Exclusion was 99.99999259%. In addition, the DNA fingerprint patterns will contribute as additional descriptors to select parental for crosses and early identification of apple accessions for breeding purposes, and also for cultivar protection.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se caracterizar a estrutura demográfica e o padrão espacial de Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Mart.) O. Berg, Myrcianthes gigantea (D. Legrand) D. Legrande Myrciaria delicatula (DC.) O. Berg, bem como, verificara influência de variáveis ambientais sobre essas populações. Em um hectare de Floresta Atlântica, todos os indivíduos das três populações foram contados e mensurados quanto à altura e diâmetro. A estrutura demográfica foi avaliada após classificação de tamanho dos indivíduos, o padrão espacial pelo Índice de Morisita Padronizado. Campomanesia xanthocarpa e M. delicatula apresentaram distribuição de frequência dos indivíduos em classes de tamanho em J invertido, já a espécie M. gigantea não seguiu o mesmo comportamento. O padrão espacial das populações de C. xanthocarpa e M. delicatula foi, predominantemente, agregado e, para M. gigantea, o padrão foi aleatório. Verifica-se que as populações de Myrtaceae possuem respostas diferenciadas quanto à estrutura e distribuição espacial em sítios com os mesmos filtros ambientais.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to characterize the demographic structure and spatial pattern of Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Mart.) O. Berg, Myrcianthes gigantea (D. Legrand) D. Legrand and Myrciaria delicatula (DC.) O. Berg. Within one hectare of Ombrophilous Mixed Forest, all the three populations' individuals were counted and measured with regard to their height and diameter. From the collected data, the assessment of the demographic structure was realized after the individual's size classification. Spatial pattern was determined by applying the Standardized Morisita's Index. C. xanthocarpa and M. delicatula showed an inverted-J frequency distribution in the individuals size classes, which differed from M. gigantea that did not follow the same pattern. The spatial pattern of C. xanthocarpa and M. delicatula populations was found mainly to be aggregated; whereas, M. gigantea showed spatial randomness. The three Myrtaceae populations responded differently with regard to structure and spatial distribution in sites with the same environmental filters.

RESUMO Plantar pinheiros-do-paraná para a produção de sementes - o pinhão - como qualquer outra atividade de manejo florestal, exige um planejamento, já que são necessários vários anos entre o plantio e o início da produção de sementes. Neste sentido, faltam informações ecológicas básicas. Muitos estudos de demografia de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze pecam em não trazer uma simples informação ecológica: em quais tamanhos os indivíduos iniciam o processo reprodutivo? Foi investigada a relação entre o tamanho em diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP e medido a 1,3 m do solo) e o estágio reprodutivo e foi procurado estabelecer um tamanho em que grande parte dos indivíduos já entraram no processo reprodutivo como mais um subsídio para a construção de projetos de viabilidade técnica para a produção de sementes. Foram amostrados cinco sítios em remanescentes da Floresta com Araucárias distribuídos ao longo do estado de Santa Catarina e no total compuseram uma área amostral de 31,6 ha. Nesta área amostral foram amostrados todos os indivíduos de Araucaria angustifolia com altura > 1.5 m e verificado o estágio reprodutivo. Ao final foram obtidos 1843 indivíduos, sendo que 383 pertencentes ao sexo masculino e 299 ao feminino. Como resultado, existiu relação significativa entre o DAP e o estágio reprodutivo. O processo reprodutivo inicia dentro da classe de DAP de 15-20 cm, mas com apenas 8% dos indivíduos em fase reprodutiva. Para encontrar grande parte de indivíduos em estágio reprodutivo (90%), o DAP deve ser no mínimo de 35,2 cm. Como conclusão, é sugerido que projetos para a produção de sementes considerem esse tamanho como o início do processo reprodutivo. Araucaria angustifolia é uma espécie com grande potencial de utilização em sistemas agroflorestais na floresta ombrófila mista, e estas informações ecológicas básicas são importantes para possibilitar a construção de projetos voltados ao uso desta espécie. Este trabalho é um exemplo de uma alternativa para modelar a produção um produto florestal não-madeireiro para outras espécies e ecossistemas.

ABSTRACT In order to plant parana-pines (Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze) for seed production, as for any other forest management activity, planning is needed, especially because of the significant amount of waiting time between planting and seed collection. Consequently, there is a lack of basic ecological information. Several studies based on the demography of the A. angustifolia fail to divulge which sized individuals are reproductive. This paper investigated the relationship between the reproductive stage and the diameter at breast height (d.b.h.), and attempted to establish a size where a great portion of the individuals had already begun their reproductive process, a considerable step for subsidizing technical projects for seed production. Five study sites located in four municipalities in the state of Santa Catarina composed a total sample area of 31.6 ha. All A. angustifolia individuals with a height greater than 1.5 m within the sampled area were measured and classified according to their reproductive phase. A total of 1,843 individuals were obtained: 383 were male, and 299 were female. There was a significant relationship between the d.b.h. and the sexual maturity of the individuals. The reproductive process begins inside the DAP class of 15-20 cm, but only 8% of the individuals reproducing. In order to find a greater number of individuals in reproduction, a minimum d.b.h. of 35.2 cm is required. In conclusion, projects that produce araucaria nuts should consider this d.b.h. size to commence production. This species has great potential for agroforestry systems within the Araucaria Forests. This basic ecological information is also important for the construction of projects that use this species, and consequently may contribute to the conservation of this forest. This can be used as a study case for other forest species and ecosystems to explore the potential production of non-timber forest products of native resources.
