Abstract The quality of the raw material for chocolate manufacture depends on the control of cacao seed fermentation. Practices affect the diversity and metabolic activities of spontaneous yeasts in fermentations. The control of the initial inoculum is important to standardize fermentations and to improve the final seed quality. We conducted fermentations using non-cleaned or cleaned fermentation boxes to evaluate the dynamics of the microorganism populations and their effect in seed composition in two consecutive years. The isolated yeasts were identified by sequencing the D1-domain of the 26S ribosomal genes. Pulp and cotyledon parameters were monitored during fermentations. Wickerhamomyces anomalus was the dominant yeast in the fermentations, but the species was less represented in cleaned boxes. In the cleaned-box fermentation, there was a delay in temperature rise of the fermentation, which retarded the suitable moment for seed-mass turning. The reduction in seed-pulp quality caused by restricted rainfall in one year limited the seed-mass heating and voided the seed turning. Thus, under substrate restriction, the initial reduced inoculum caused by cleaning the boxes impaired fermentation, mainly under environmental conditions that compromise the quality of the pulp. However, this variation had little effect on the desired degradation of cotyledon components, substrates for flavor precursors. noncleaned non years D1domain Ddomain D1 domain D S genes cleanedbox box seedmass mass turning seedpulp pulp Thus restriction However components precursors

ABSTRACT Hexapods, commonly known as insects, are a neglected taxonomic group in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, with unanswered questions about their species richness and the ecological processes in which they are involved (e.g., colonization, introduction, establishment, and extinction). Herein, we provide an updated Hexapod checklist with current nomenclatural combinations. The entomofauna of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago is currently composed of 453 species in 21 orders. The orders, and their respective number of species, are: Blattaria (9), Coleoptera (118), Collembola (29), Dermaptera (3), Diplura (1), Diptera (134), Embioptera (1), Hemiptera (29), Hymenoptera (59), Isoptera (2), Lepidoptera (25), Mantodea (1), Neuroptera (3), Odonata (5), Orthoptera (11), Phasmatodea (1), Phthiraptera (6), Psocoptera (3), Siphonaptera (1), Thysanoptera (10), and Zygentoma (2). The archipelago has 263 new taxon records (family + genera + species). Thirty-eight species (3.39%) were described from local specimens and most of them are likely endemic species. This study more than doubles our knowledge (from the previous 190 records) of the entomofauna in this large Brazilian archipelago. This study also provides a baseline for studies on its conservation status and for implementing future environmental management programs.

ABSTRACT We describe the discovery of Aedes aegypti underground breeding site in the Pinheiros neighborhood of São Paulo, SP, during an entomological survey program performed in 2016. Even with intense surveillance and vector control, large numbers of mosquitoes were present in this area. A detailed investigation allowed for the detection of Ae. aegypti in an underground reservoir used for rainwater storage. After the implementation of protection screens in the accesses, the presence of the vector was no longer detected. In this study, we discuss the frequent use of this type of reservoir structure and its risk for mosquito production.

The objective of this study was to evidence alterations in plasma biochemistry in police urban horses, before and after work. We used 28 horses divided into two groups: GI consisting of 12 animals used in the shift from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm, and GII consisting of 16 animals used in the shift from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Horses from both groups were fed 2 hours before work. Two blood samples were collected from the jugular vein of each animal, before and after work. The blood glucose and phosphate levels showed differences, the glucose concentration increased in GII and phosphate concentration increased in GI and GII. The increase of the phosphate concentrations can be due to the reduction of glomerular filtration and consequent absence of urination during work. Fasting usually stimulates gluconeogenesis in order to supply the energy demand, which may be the cause of increased blood glucose levels in the horses from GII after work. These horses worked 3 h more than horses from GI, besides they began the activities with lower basal values of blood glucose. By analyzing the results of this study, we concluded that the use of horses for urban policing resulted in hyperphosphatemia and hyperglycemia.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The issues related to the changes and problems of the local and regional development have acquired greater relevance in institutional spaces including the fields of science and research as a result of instability and problems arising from the relationship between production and consumption. In this context, it is necessary to redefine public policy and social actors' activities involved with the initiatives for the generation of local and sustainable development. This study aims to identify the Index of Sustainable Development of the city of Alagoa Grande and its influence in formulating and implementing policies for municipal development. Therefore, the methodology developed by Martins and Cândido (2008), which measures the rate of sustainability of cities, was used focusing on identifying the situation of the municipality of the city under study in relation to sustainability. The results indicated that the sustainability indexes found are not satisfactory in all areas investigated, which brings the need to redesign public policies and promote social and institutional attitude changes in order to achieve greater synergy between public and private interests towards the generation of sustainable development.
