Abstract We compared sampling techniques in a managed native forest in Paragominas, Pará, Brazil. Our goal in this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using Double Sampling (DS) and Sampling with Partial Replacement (SPR), when compared to Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI), to estimate the wood stock for trees with DBH ≥ 20 cm in a managed forest. In our results, DS had the best volume prediction, generating a sampling error of 5.20% (11.48 m³ ha-1) on the second occasion 3.86% (8.78 m³ ha-1). The average volume increment, estimated for the forest in the monitored period (2014-2016) was 6.88 m³ ha-1, with a relative sampling error of 63.09%. Therefore, as an alternative and of low cost, we suggest using DS in successive forest inventories in monitoring areas of forest resources in the Brazilian Amazon.

Resumo Este trabalho analisou as distribuições diamétricas antes e após intervenções silviculturais em uma área de floresta tropical úmida da Amazônia no estado do Amapá, Brasil. O objetivo consistiu em entender de que modo a distribuição diamétrica da floresta foi recuperada depois dos tratamentos silviculturais entre 1984 e 2011, um intervalo de 27 anos. Para essa finalidade, dados de 40 parcelas permanentes foram utilizados. A função Weibull da distribuição diamétrica nos anos de 1984, 1990 e 2011 foi ajustada aos tratamentos controle T0 (0% de exploração e 0% de desbastes), T07 (25% de exploração e 50% de desbastes) e T11 (35% de exploração e 50% de desbastes) através do pacote estatístico Table Curve. As comparações das distribuições diamétricas antes e depois das intervenções silviculturais foram feitas usando o teste de χ 2. Os resultados mostraram que os ajustes da função Weibull obtiveram boa aderência pelo teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov (p > 0,05), em todos os tratamentos e em todos os períodos. Não houve diferenças significativas antes e depois das intervenções para T0. Por outro lado, foram observadas diferenças das distribuições diamétricas antes e depois das intervenções conforme os níveis de intervenção para T7 e T11. Portanto, para T11, a distribuição diamétrica recuperou-se depois das intervenções, o que significa que o período de 1984 a 2011 foi suficiente para a recuperação da distribuição diamétrica ao seu estado inicial.

Abstract This study analyzed the diametric distributions before and after forest management in a rainforest area of the Amazon in the Amapá State, Brazil. It aimed to understand how the diametric distribution of the forest was recovered after 27 years of forest management between 1984 and 2011. For this purpose, data from 40 permanent plots were used. The Weibull function for the diametric distribution was fitted to data from 1984, 1990, and 2011 by applying the Table Curve statistical package over the control treatments T0 (0% exploration and 0% thinning), T07 (25% exploration and 50% thinning), and T11 (35% exploration and 50% thinning). Comparisons between the diametric distributions before and after the forest management were conducted using the χ 2 test. After fitting the Weibull function, the results showed good adherence by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (p > 0.05) for all treatments and periods. There were no differences in the diametric distributions before and after management for T0. In contrast, diametric distributions were different before and after forest management regarding the intervention levels for T7 and T11. Therefore, for T11, the diametric distribution recovered after management, indicating that forest management during 1984-2011 was enough to recover the diametric distribution to its initial state.

Resumo A modelagem do recrutamento em florestais tropicais é importante para estudos de sustentabilidade do manejo florestal, por dar subsídio adequado à recuperação do estoque de madeira. O objetivo do trabalho foi estimar o recrutamento após a colheita de madeira, empregando um modelo de rede neural artificial (RNA). A área de estudo está localizada na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós (55°00’ W, 2°45’ S), Pará. Em 64 ha da área de estudo, em 1979, foi realizada colheita intensiva de 72,5 m3 ha-1. Em 1981 foram instaladas, aleatoriamente, 36 parcelas permanentes de 50 m x 50 m. Essas parcelas foram mensuradas em 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 e 2012. Para modelar o recrutamento foram consideradas as variáveis da subparcela-alvo e a sua vizinhança. As estimativas obtidas no treino e na generalização da RNA foram avaliadas pelas estatísticas: correlação () e raiz quadrada do erro quadrático médio (RQRQM), sendo obtido RQRQM 35,6% e 0,89. Foi possível modelar a tendência do recrutamento ao longo do tempo em florestas tropicais, após a colheita de madeira.

Abstract Recruitment models in tropical forests are important for studies on forest management sustainability because they provide adequate support to recovery of wood stocks. The objective of this work was to estimate recruitment after wood harvesting by using an artificial neural network (ANN) model. The study area is located at Tapajós National Forest (55° 00’ W, 2° 45’ S), Pará state. In 64 ha of the study area, in 1979, an intensive harvest of 72.5 m3 ha-1 was carried out. In 1981, 36 permanent plots of 50 m x 50 m were randomly installed. These plots were measured in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 and 2012. For recruitment modeling, the variables of the target subplot and its vicinity were considered. The estimates obtained in ANN training and generalization were evaluated by statistics: correlation () and root mean square error (RMSE) were determined: RMSE 35.6% and 0.89. Recruitment tendency could be modeled over time in tropical forests after wood harvesting.

Resumo A procura intensa por essências madeireiras nativas consolidadas, que apresentam elevado uso, pode ocasionar a superexploração de espécies e diminuição do seu estoque na floresta. Uma alternativa para essa situação é a substituição dessas espécies por outras com propriedades da madeira semelhantes e com suficiente estoque de crescimento na floresta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi agrupar as espécies da Amazônia através das propriedades físico-mecânicas da madeira e realizar a análise discriminante para identificar quais características tecnológicas são mais importantes para o agrupamento. As espécies estudadas foram provenientes de oito localidades distintas da região amazônica. As propriedades físico-mecânicas utilizadas obtidas da literatura especializada nacional foram: densidade básica, contração (tangencial, radial e volumétrica), flexão estática, compressão paralela e perpendicular às fibras, dureza Janka paralela e transversal, tração perpendicular às fibras, fendilhamento e cisalhamento. Foi utilizada a técnica de análise multivariada de Cluster (distância euclidiana simples e o método de Ward) e a análise discriminante para avaliar o agrupamento. A análise de Cluster foi eficiente para agrupar as espécies, que foram separadas em três grupos distintos. As espécies que se destacaram foram a Helicostylis pedunculata Benoist. e Tachigali chrysophylla (Poepp.) Zarucchi & Herend., por se agruparem com as espécies mais comercializadas. Os menores valores de Wilks’Lambda foram da densidade da madeira (0,759053), cisalhamento (0,802960) e compressão paralela às fibras (0,825594). Essas características foram as mais determinantes para discriminar os grupos. A análise de agrupamento é eficiente para indicar a substituição de espécies consolidadas na Amazônia.

Abstract The intense search for consolidated native wood essences, which are highly used, can lead to the overexploitation of species and decrease their stocks in the forest. An alternative to this situation is the replacement of these species by others with similar wood properties and with sufficient forest growing stock. The objective of this work was to cluster the Amazon species through wood physical-mechanical properties and perform the discriminant analysis to identify which technological characteristics are more important for the clustering. The species studied came from eight different locations in the Amazon region. The properties used were: basic density, contraction (tangential, radial and volumetric), static flexion, compression parallel and perpendicular to the fibers, Janka hardness parallel and transversal, traction perpendicular to the fibers, cracking and shearing, all obtained from the national specialized literature. Multivariate Cluster analysis (simple Euclidean distance and Ward’s method) and the discriminant analyses were used to evaluate the clustering. Cluster analysis was efficient to cluster the species, which were separated into three distinct groups. The species that stood out were Helicostylis pedunculata Benoist. and Tachigali chrysophylla (Poepp.) Zarucchi & Herend., f or clustering with the most commercialized species. The lowest values of Wilks’Lambda were wood density (0.759053), shearing (0.802960) and compression parallel to the fibers (0.825594). These characteristics were the most determinant to discriminate the clusters. The clustering analysis was efficient for the separation of the species into marketing clusters.

Abstract: Timber from the second cutting cycle may make up the majority of future crop volumetric. However, there are few studies of the physical and mechanical properties of this timber, which are important to support the consolidation of new species. This study aimed to use Artificial Neural Networks to estimate the physical and mechanical properties of wood from the Amazon, based on basic density. The properties were: shrinkage (tangential, radial and volumetric), static bending, parallel and perpendicular to the fiber compression, parallel and transverse to the fibers, Janka hardness, traction, splitting and shear. The estimate followed the tendency of the data observed for the tangential, radial and volumetric shrinkage. The network estimated the mechanical properties with significant accuracy. Distribution of errors, static bending, parallel compression and perpendicular to the fiber compression also showed significant accuracy. Artificial Neural Networks can be used to estimate the physical and mechanical properties of wood from Amazon species.

RESUMO No manejo florestal é importante projetar a distribuição diamétrica ao longo do ciclo de corte para subsidiar as técnicas silviculturais mais adequadas à estrutura da floresta. O objetivo do trabalho foi projetar a distribuição diamétrica ao longo do ciclo de corte utilizando Matriz de Transição Markoviana. Em 1979 foi realizada a colheita seletiva, com intensidade de 72,5 m3 ha-1, em uma área de 64 ha, na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, Pará. Em 1981 foram instaladas, aleatoriamente, 36 parcelas permanentes de 50 m x 50 m medidas sucessivamente em 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 e 2012. Para a projeção foram usadas duas matrizes de transição: uma com intervalo de tempo de um ano (1981 a 1982) e outra de dois anos (1981 a 1983). Todas as projeções apresentaram distribuição diamétrica em forma de “J” invertido, com pequena descontinuidade no último ano (2012). Houve aderência da distribuição diamétrica a 5% de significância entre os dados observados e estimados até aos 11 anos de projeção. A matriz de transição pode ser usada para projetar a distribuição diamétrica após a colheita em pequenos períodos de tempo após a colheita florestal.

ABSTRACT In forest management, it is important to project diametric distribution along the cutting cycle to subsidize the most suitable silvicultural techniques to forest structure. The aim of this work was to project diametric distribution along the cutting cycle using Markov Transition Matrix. In 1979, selective harvest was performed with an intensity of 72.5 m3 ha-1, in a 64 ha area in ‘Floresta Nacional do Tapajós’ - Pará state (PA). In 1981, 36 permanent plots of 50m x 50m were randomly installed and measured successively in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2007, 2010 and 2012. For the projection, two transition matrices were used: one with time interval of one year (1981 to 1982) and another of two years (1981 to 1983). All projections showed diametric distribution in inverted “J” form, with small discontinuity last year (2012). There was adherence of diametric distribution at 5% significance between observed and estimated data, up to 11 years of projection. Transition matrix can be used to project diametric distribution after harvest in short periods of time after the forest harvest.

Dentre as atividades que compõem um sistema de manejo florestal, a colheita é a mais dispendiosa e, quando realizada sem planejamento, acarreta sérios danos à estrutura da floresta. Para uma exploração de baixo impacto, isto é, para minimizar os danos à regeneração natural e às árvores remanescentes, é obrigatório realizar levantamento detalhado da área a ser manejada. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi propor uma metodologia de inventário de prospecção com mapeamento arbóreo. Em uma unidade de produção anual de 24,25 ha, foram inventariados 2.707 indivíduos arbóreos, com DAP > 20 cm, que, além das características quantitativas e qualitativas, tiveram as suas coordenadas (UTM) determinadas e arquivadas em um banco de dados georreferenciados. As análises do inventário de prospecção englobaram a viabilidade técnica e a determinação do custo do método proposto. A metodologia, com base na utilização de equipamento digital de medição de distância, mostrou-se exeqüível. O rigor exigido na determinação da localização das árvores, assim como as características de relevo, sub-bosque denso e grande infestação de cipós, influenciou no rendimento do inventário de prospecção, que foi de 442 m por dia para a abertura de picadas e de 0,80 ha por dia para a realização do inventário de prospecção. O custo da abertura de picadas e do inventário de prospecção foi de US$ 35,69/ha e US$ 89,43/ha, respectivamente.

Among the activities which compose a forest management system, harvest is the most expensive one, and when it is carried out without planning it causes severe damages to the forest structure. To perform low impact exploitation, that is, to minimize damages to natural regeneration and remaining trees, a detailed survey of the area to be managed must be done. The main objective of this work was to propose a new methodology of prospection survey with an arboreous mapping. In a unit of annual production of 24.25 ha, 2,707 arboreous individuals were surveyed, with DBH > 20 cm, and their data of quantitative and qualitative features, besides their geographic coordinates (UTM) were kept in a geographic referred database. The prospection survey analyses included the technical viability and the determination of cost of the proposed method. The prospection survey methodology, based on the use of digital equipment for distance measurement, showed to be technically feasible. The accuracy required in the determination of the position of the trees, as well as the relief conditions, dense understory and great presence of vines, influenced directly the prospection survey outcome, which were of 442 m per day for trail openings, and of 0.80 ha per day for the prospection survey carried out. The cost of trail opening and prospection survey were of US$35.69 and US$89.43 per hectare, respectively.

Na Amazônia, plantios de mogno têm sido limitados por ataques de Hypsiphylla grandella Zeller. No entanto, plantios em áreas urbanas em Brasília vêm apresentando bom desenvolvimento. O objetivo deste trabalho foi observar o comportamento do mogno em plantios homogêneo e consorciado. Para isso foi instalado um experimento na Fazenda Água Limpa, da Universidade de Brasília (UnB), Distrito Federal, com dois tratamentos: plantio homogêneo e plantio misto com eucalipto. O primeiro consistiu no plantio homogêneo de mogno e o segundo, consorciado com eucalipto. Foram medidas as variáveis altura aos 7, 12, 15, 24, 28, 36 e 40 meses de idade e diâmetro aos 7, 24, 28, 36 e 40 meses. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, sendo os tratamentos as parcelas e o tempo, as subparcelas. A altura média aos 40 meses do consórcio foi de 2,28 m e do homogêneo, de 3,45 m, sendo as alturas máximas, respectivamente, de 4,15 e 5,17 m. O diâmetro médio também foi maior no tratamento homogêneo do que no consórcio (4,08 e 6,92 cm, respectivamente). A mortalidade situou-se em torno de 20%, tanto no plantio homogêneo quanto no consorciado, não havendo diferenças significativas. O ataque das larvas de H. grandella foi menor no plantio consorciado, indicando que o eucalipto serve como barreira física, diminuindo o ataque da praga, porém a competição de ambos ocasionou menor crescimento do mogno.

In the Amazon, plantations of mahogany have been limited by attacks of Hypsiphylla grandella Zeller. On the other hand, urban plantings in Brasília have developed well. The objective of this work was to observe the development of mahogany in homogenous or in mixed stands with eucalypts planted in the Água Limpa farm at the University of Brasilia - Federal District. The variables height, at 7, 12, 15, 24, 28, 36 and 40 months of age, and diameter, at 7, 24, 28, 36 and 40 months were measured. A split-plot entirely randomized design was used, the treatments being the plot and time the sub-plot. The average height of mahogan 40 months after planting in the mixed stands was of 2.28 m, whereas in homogenous stands it was 3.45 m and the maximum heights recorded were 4.15 m and 5.17 m respectively. The average diameter was also larger in the homogenous stand, with 6.92 cm compared to 4.08 cm for the mixed stands. Mortality was around 20% under both conditions. Attacks by H. grandella larvae was less in mixed stands, indicating that the eucalypts may function as a barrier, reducing the attack.
