ABSTRACT Scarabeoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) present more than 2000 species recorded from all over Brazil. They have been scarcely recorded from caves, and truly troglobitic species are yet to be found in the country. In this study, we carried out a review of all existing scarab beetles deposited until 2017 in the Coleção de Invertebrados Subterrâneos de Lavras (ISLA), at the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) (Minas Gerais, Brazil), one of the most important collections of subterranean invertebrates in South America. Ninety-two individuals belonging to 52 species were recorded, distributed in six families (Cetoniidae, Hybosoridae, Melolonthidae, Passalidae, Scarabaeidae and Trogidae). Scarabaeidae was the most diverse of them, representing more than 50% of the total of species recorded. We found Scarabeoidea beetles in 51 of the ~ 1600 caves examined, distributed in nine Brazilian states: Alagoas, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Pará, Piauí, and Tocantins. Our results provide evidence that Scarabaeoidea beetles are not frequent in Brazilian caves, and their records in this kind of environment are mostly accidental. Exceptions include Trogidae and Aphodiinae species, which may be associated with bat guano. Our study presents the first list of Scarabaeoidea species sampled in Brazilian caves.

ABSTRACT Distributional and biological data for some bat species in South America are scarce, mainly in non-phyl-lostomid bats. Herein we provide new records of two rare species of aerial insectivore bats for southeastern Brazil, Histiotus montanus and Molossops neglectus. In addition, we report facial morphological variation in color and new records of ectoparasites for H. montanus. For M. neglectus we performed a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to check for morphometric variation based on forearm and skull dimensions, the southerly distributed specimens showing slightly smaller measurements than the northern ones.

The sulfur related thermochemical water-splitting cycles are an important class of chemical processes considered for hydrogen production. Recently, the magnesium sulfate thermal decomposition has been reported as a potential unit operation in one of these cycles. Therefore, some interest has been observed in the use of catalysts to lower the activation energy of such reactions. In this context, the present manuscript reports the thermodynamics and kinetics modeling results associated with this reaction system in the presence of a Pd catalyst supported over γ-Al2O3. The presence of such species is responsible for shifting the decomposition temperature to lower values in at least 100 °C. It was observed that the magnesium content is still oriented towards MgO formation. The obtained results indicate that the Pd/Al2O3 catalyst could be a good alternative in reducing the thermal decomposition temperature as its presence was responsible for diminishing the process activation energy from 368.2 to 258.8 kJ.mol−1.

OBJECTIVES: We designed a cohort study to describe characteristics and outcomes of patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in the largest public hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as Latin America becomes the epicenter of the pandemic. METHODS: This is the protocol for a study being conducted at an academic hospital in Brazil with 300 adult ICU beds dedicated to COVID-19 patients. We will include adult patients admitted to the ICU with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 during the study period. The main outcome is ICU survival at 28 days. Data will be collected prospectively and retrospectively by trained investigators from the hospital’s electronic medical records, using an electronic data capture tool. We will collect data on demographics, comorbidities, severity of disease, and laboratorial test results at admission. Information on the need for advanced life support and ventilator parameters will be collected during ICU stay. Patients will be followed up for 28 days in the ICU and 60 days in the hospital. We will plot Kaplan-Meier curves to estimate ICU and hospital survival and perform survival analysis using the Cox proportional hazards model to identify the main risk factors for mortality. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04378582. RESULTS: We expect to include a large sample of patients with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU and to be able to provide data on admission characteristics, use of advanced life support, ICU survival at 28 days, and hospital survival at 60 days. CONCLUSIONS: This study will provide epidemiological data about critically ill patients with COVID-19 in Brazil, which could inform health policy and resource allocation in low- and middle-income countries.

Abstract Evaluated lipid and cholesterol concentration and fatty acid profile of raw breast, thigh and drumstick meat from broilers raised in different rearing systems. Were used 200 male broiler carcasses from four different rearing systems (n=50 from conventional intensive; n=50 from organic; n=50 from free-range; and n=50 from antibiotic-free) distributed in a completely randomized design with four rearing systems and 50 replications (carcasses). Breast meat from conventional broilers showed higher lipid (1.47) and cholesterol (34.13) concentration. Thigh and drumstick meat from free-range broilers had higher lipid (7.53/4.73) and cholesterol (45.55/53.65) concentration. Fat contained in breast, thigh and drumstick meat from free-range broilers showed higher levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fat from breast and thigh meat from free-range broilers showed higher total concentration of ω3 and ω6 fatty acids. Fat from thigh meat from organic broilers showed higher levels of EPA (C20:5n3) and DHA (C22:6n3). Fat from drumstick meat from free-range broilers showed higher total concentration of ω3 and ω6 fatty acids. Meat from chickens raised in alternative rearing systems offers less risk to cardiovascular health because it presents lower concentrations of lipids and cholesterol, greater amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are beneficial for human health.

Sample preparation of polymers for halogen determination requires special attention because they are difficult to bring into solution and due to the risk of analyte losses when using acid digestion. A method using microwave-induced combustion (MIC) was optimized for accurate determination of halogens in polymeric parts obtained in waste of electrical and electronic equipment. Results were compared with those by using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) with alkaline solution and microwave-assisted wet digestion (MAWD) using concentrated nitric acid, which are common choices for sample preparation. In this particular case, the MAE method was not suitable and underestimated results were obtained, showing the necessity for the complete digestion. Even with the use of MAWD under high temperature and pressure, incomplete digestion and high acid content were obtained, which were unsuitable for analysis and resulted in poor recovery. Only by using MIC (diluted ammonia as absorbing solution) acceptable recoveries (95 to 104%) and agreement with certified values for the certified reference materials (CRMs) of polymers were obtained. Thus, a suitable method for all halogen to be determined by ion chromatography (IC) or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), with the exception of F, was obtained in agreement with the requirements by the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) European directive.

Dry ashing, dissolution in aqueous medium or wet digestion methods were evaluated for sample preparation of shampoo for the subsequent indirect determination of sulfur by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Among the sample preparation methods evaluated, microwave-assisted wet digestion using 7 mol L-1 HNO3 was the most suitable method for this purpose. Accuracy of the proposed method was evaluated by recovery test using standard solution, and the recovery was about 96%. Moreover, for comparison of results, S (as SO42-) was also determined by ion chromatography, after microwave-assisted wet digestion using concentrated HNO3, and no significant difference was observed between the obtained results (according to the t-test for a 95% confidence level, p = 0.288). Relative standard deviations were always lower than 10% and the limit of detection was 0.007% w/v. Finally, the proposed method was applied for analysis of sixteen shampoos used to many types of hair, from different brands produced in Brazil, and the concentration of S ranged from 0.78 to 2.82% w/v.

ABSTRACT Many studies have demonstrated the ecological relevance and great biodiversity of bats in Brazil. However, mountainous areas have been disproportionately less sampled, mainly in the Southeast. The aim of this study was to identify and compare the richness and diversity of Phyllostomidae, the most diverse bat family, in different forest types in Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca, trying to understand the causes of possible differences. The Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca is inserted in the Serra da Mantiqueira's domain, in an Atlantic Forest region known as "Zona da Mata", state of Minas Gerais, with an altitudinal range between 1200-1784 meters. The study was conducted in two forest types, classified as "Nanofloresta Nebular" and "Floresta Nebular", whose respective data on richness and diversity were compared. The bats were captured with 8-10 mist nets for 14 months (April 2011 to May 2012) and four nights per month totaling 62,171.25 m2h of capture effort. A total of 392 captures (12 species) belonging to the Phyllostomidae family were obtained. The most abundant species were Sturnira lilium (59.9%), Platyrrhinus lineatus (11.3%), Artibeus lituratus (8.7%) and Carollia perspicillata (7.6%). The two sampled areas presented differences in bat richness, diversity and species composition, and this difference was predominantly influenced by S. lilium. It is likely that the observed difference in the assembly of bats between the two study sites depends on the variation in floristic composition. The records of A. lituratus and P. lineatus in a few months of the year and close to Ficus mexiae bearing ripe fruits suggests that at least these species move to the park for a few periods of the year in search of food resources, possibly moving through the altitudinal landscapes.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Nb2O5/HX (X = HSO4-, H2PO4-, NO3-) compounds were obtained from the treatment of niobium acid (Nb2O5·xH2O) with sulfuric, phosphoric, and nitric acids as well as Nb2O5 and Nb2O5·xH2O have been investigated as catalysts for the transesterification, esterification and pyrolysis of vegetable oils. The compounds were characterized by thermal analysis (DTA-TGA), spectroscopy (DRX, FT-IR and FT-Raman), surface area (BET) and the acidity (Ho) determined by n-butylamine titration using the Hammet´s indicator method. It was observed that after the acid treatment both the surface area and the acidity decreased as compared to the starting Nb2O5·xH2O. The only exception was a higher acidity verified when nitric acid was used. Among the catalyst investigated, the Nb2O5/H3PO4 presented the highest activity in the alcoholysis of soybean oil with different mono-alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, n-butanol). All tested solids seemed to stabilize the carboxylic acids formed during the pyrolysis, yielding higher acid numbers for the obtained products. Finally, the use of Nb2O5/H3PO4 and Nb2O5/H2SO4 as catalysts for the esterification showed better activity than Nb2O5·xH2O and Nb2O5.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the annual cost of coronary artery disease (CAD) management in Public Health Care System (SUS) and HMOs values in Brazil. METHODS: Cohort study, including ambulatory patients with proven CAD. Clinic visits, exams, procedures, hospitalizations and medications were considered to estimate direct costs. Values of appointments and exams were obtained from the SUS and the Medical Procedure List (LPM 1999) reimbursement tables. Costs of cardiovascular events were obtained from admissions in public and private hospitals with similar diagnoses-related group classifications in 2002. The price of medications used was the lowest found in the market. RESULTS: The 147 patients (65±12 years old, 63% men, 69% hypertensive, 35% diabetic and 59% with previous AMI) had an average follow-up of 24±8 months. The average estimated annual cost per patient was R$ 2,733.00, for the public sector, and R$ 6,788.00, for private and fee-for-service plans. Expenses with medications (R$ 1,154.00) represented 80% and 55% of outpatient costs, and 41% and 17% of total expenses, in public and non-public sectors, respectively. The occurrence of cardiovascular event had a great impact (R$ 4,626.00 vs. R$ 1,312.00, in SUS, and R$ 13,453.00 vs. R$ 1,789.00, for HMOs, p<0.01) on the results. CONCLUSION: The average annual cost of CAD management was high, being the pharmacological treatment the main determinant of public costs. Such estimates may subsidize economical analyses in this area, and foster related healthcare policies.

The aim of present study was to investigate the influence of acute and chronic physical exercise on the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis in Wistar rats administered with dexamethasone. Young Wistar rats were divided into four groups: sedentary control (CS), sedentary dexamethasone (DxS), trained control (CT) and trained dexamethasone (DxT). Training protocol consisted of swimming 1h/day, 5 days/week, during 10 weeks, supporting a load of 5% of their body weight. Dexamethasone was administered 5 times for week (2µg/day in 150µl 0,9% NaCl). Before sacrifying the rats each received a subcutaneous insulin to calculate the maximum decreased in blood glucose. Venous blood samples were obtained at the end of the experimental period to determine serum glucose and ACTH. Gastrocnemius, adrenal and adipose epididimal tissues’ samples were used to determine weight, glycogen and ascorbic acid concentration, respectively. Data suggests that chronic exposure to dexamethasone was associated with decreased insulin sensitivity. The dexametasona treatment decreased ACTH release in response to acute exercise, showing marked differences in the functioning of the CRH-ACTH-adrenal axis between groups of rats. In conclusion, exercise can override the dexamethasone negative feedback of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis activation in rats.

The ideal size and shape of plots for green pepper experiments under protected environments was determined. Two experiments were conducted in plastic green house, in 2001, in the summer-fall and in the winter-spring season, evaluating the fruit weight. The plants were laid out in ten lines of twenty meters length, and in each line were allocated seventy plants. The estimates of the plot size and shape were obtained by the maxim curvature, variable comparison and Hatheway methods. Applying these methods we could conclude that the plot size and shape estimates are similar considering the maximum curvature and Hatheway methods and with the cultivation seasons. Each plot must have two plants long a five plants width, with a total of ten plants per plot.

Rhinoliths are calcareous formations found inside the nose, have rare occurrence and are easily confused with infection or obstruction of superior airways. OBJECTIVES: To report eight cases of rhinolithiasis, the long time to diagnose them, their fisiopathogenic mechanism, associated symptoms and the chosen treatment, and to provide a short bibliographic review about the theme. STUDY DESIGN: Series report. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The authors describe eight cases of rhinolithiasis seen at University Hospital Antônio Pedro, UFF, and at the Pires de Mello Clinic, Niterói, RJ, between January 1982 and July 2002. RESULTS: In this period eight cases of rhinolithiasis had occurred. Four of them were males and four females, ages from seven to 76 years old. The most frequent symptom related was nasal obstruction with mucopurulent and rhinorhea fetidness. An assymptomatic case was reported. In half of the cases rhinolith was not found through anterior rhinoscopia, and other diagnose methods were necessary to see the mass. Complementary exams like computerized tomography and simple x-ray of paranasal sinus were used to locate and measure the dimension of calcareous mass, and to study possible invasion of the neighboring structures. The removal of rhinolith was done with topic anesthesia in three cases. CONCLUSION: Rhinolithiasis are rare, nevertheless they must be always suspected in cases of long time nasal obstruction, nasal fetidness, mucopurulent rhinorhea and chronic headache.
