Abstract In the last decades, clays have been used in sectors such as health and cosmetics. This requires products that are increasingly pure and present homogeneous properties, hardly found in natural clays. The use of synthetic clays can be a solution. For this, it is necessary to explore techniques for their production. The main focus of this study was to synthesize a smectite clay in a simple, fast and economic way at low temperature and pressure, called static and dynamic methods. To regulate the pH of the reaction and bring it closer to the ideal synthesis conditions, two different acids were used: nitric acid (the most widely used in the literature) and hydrochloric acid (more accessible and cheaper). The results showed characteristics of uniform crystalline material with a porous structure similar to that of the smectite group. Small particle sizes of approximately 100 nm were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Stevensite clay was obtained by both synthesis methods using two different acids; the static method with hydrochloric acid stood out. The greater practicality in its development provides a more viable option for large-scale industrial production.

ABSTRACT The first analysis of the light curves of contact binaries ROTSE J135349.8+305205 (CB1) and 1SWASP J150957.5-115308 (CB2) using the Wilson-Devinney code is presented. Both binary systems are of the A-subtype with a shallow fill-out (20.8% and 15.8% respectively) and a difference in temperatures between the components of < 200 K. A mass-ratio of 0.302 is found for CB1, while for CB2 the interesting value of 0.904 is found. The short periods, 0.246 d for CB1 and 0.229 d for CB2, and their spectral type K suggests that these systems are near the shortest period limit. The absolute elements are estimated using GAIA parallaxes. CB2 is found to be at the beginning of its evolution, while CB1 will approach the final evolutionary stage. The sum of the component masses of CB1 is 0.813 M⊙, below the mass limit of 1.0 1.2 M⊙ assumed for the known contact binary stars.

Abstract The continental margin off the southeastern Brazilian coast is punctuated by a series of geological-geomorphological features, such as subsurface saline diapirs and pockmarks at the seafloor interface, which evidence the abundant presence of oil and gas in the region. In several of these sites, hydrocarbons can be naturally released into the water column, areas are cold seep areas. These are marked by the presence of oil- and gas-dependent ecosystems, where specific organisms are able to fix carbon from hydrocarbon chemosynthesis. In addition, light hydrocarbon fluid flow through the sediment may build up authigenic carbonates that can be further colonized by cold-water corals, generating large carbonate mounds over geological time, normally positioned at the border of these pockmark features. The present work reports on a multidisciplinary oceanographic cruise carried out in the Santos Basin, SW Atlantic, to seek, map, and collect geological, chemical, and biological data from different deep-sea habitats. The cruise occurred in November 2019 on the R/V Alpha Crucis of the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (IOUSP). We intended to discover and detail different geomorphological features, characterize free-living and symbiotic microorganisms, determine the chemosynthetic rates in relation to heterotrophic microbial production, and characterize the fauna and study their ecological and evolutionary links within and across ocean basins. All discoveries made during the cruise and their respective results will be presented separately in several papers that comprise this special volume.

Abstract Hops is a new culture in Brazil. Tissue culture can be an important technique for rapid hop propagation. This paper aims to characterize responses from different genotypes under different growth regulators through the interrelationship of response variables important to hop in vitro growth. Three genotypes were cultivated in six culture media with different combinations of growth regulators, BAP (6-benzylaminopurine), IAA (3-indolacetic acid) and GA3 (gibberellic acid). The means were compared by orthogonal contrasts and the interrelationship of the response variables was performed by path analysis. American genotypes showed favorable root development under the BAP + IAA combination, while the use of IAA improved shoot development. The origin of genotypes was important for defining the best protocol for in vitro cultivation. The path coefficient showed that the variable number of shoots has stronger direct effect on the number of nodal segments. Additionally, in tissue culture assays, the use of a covariable and proper error distribution significantly increased experimental accuracy.

Abstract Staphylococcus spp. represents the main mastitis agents in ruminants and contaminants of milk due to their expressive capacity to make biofilms. The aims in this study was evaluate evaluated the antimicrobial activity of Mauritia flexuosa L. extracts against Staphylococcus spp. adhered to a stainless steel surface. Two isolates from cows with clinical mastitis were evaluated; one was identified as Staphylococcus aureus, and the other Staphylococcus haemolyticus. Additionally the ATCC 25923 strain, S. aureus from human was evaluated. The chemical profile obtained from gas chromatography revealed the presence of carbohydrates, organic acids, and flavonoids. The minimum bactericidal concentrations of the ethanolic extract (EE) and aqueous extract (AE) were 4.4 and 5.82 mg/mL, respectively. After EE treatment at 4.4 mg/mL for 2.5 min, total removal of mature biofilms grown on stainless steel coupons was observed (reduction by 3.85-4.81 log units). This extract from M. flexuosa shows potential as an effective sanitizer and may represent a natural alternative against Staphylococcus spp.

Predicting the compatibility of crude oils from different streams can be done by applying models that use the solubility parameter of the oils. The approximate solubility parameter value of a given crude oil can be calculated by observing the asphaltene precipitation onset caused by titration with n-heptane. For oils whose precipitation onset is not well defined, a small quantity of another petroleum with easily detected onset can be added. It would be ideal to always use the same petroleum for this addition, but this is obviously not possible. The purpose of this study was to replace this petroleum by a synthetic molecule. Therefore, molecules were selected and synthesized to obtain structures containing aromatic ring, aliphatic chain and heteroatom. The molecules were characterized by infrared spectrometry, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and gel permeation chromatography. Nitrated cardanol, polycardanol obtained by addition polymerization (PCA) and nitrated PCA presented the desired behavior. However, the concentration of the molecule in toluene needs to be adjusted in function of the characteristics of the petroleum. For a particular crude oil, when model molecule present solubility in a wider solubility parameter range, lower concentration will require to identify the precipitation onset of that oil.

Abstract Introduction: The behavior of antifungal susceptibility of Aspergillus spp. in Cuba remains unknown. The antifungals recommended to treat aspergillosis are amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole and echinocandins. The influence of the environment may set off the emergence of drug-resistance in these microorganisms. Objective: To evaluate in vitro susceptibility of Aspergillus spp. strains to amphotericin B, itraconazole and voriconazol, and the relationship between susceptibility patterns and their origin. Materials and methods: Minimum inhibitory concentrations of amphotericin B, itraconazole and voriconazole were determined for 60 Aspergillus spp. strains of clinical and environmental origin using the M38-A2 method of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Results: We found 21 amphotericin B resistant strains (mainly from clinical samples and hospital environments), as well as three itraconazole resistant strains (from non-hospital outdoor and indoor environments). No voriconazole resistance was found. No relationship was found between strain origin and susceptibility. Conclusions: Results suggest the possible existence of environmental factors or interactions with resistant genotypes which may give rise to resistant phenotypes in our country. This is the first report of in vitro Aspergillus spp. resistant strains in Cuba. These studies should be broadened and include molecular and phylogenetic analyses.

Abstract Synthetic hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2; HA) has become a widely used ceramic material for bone reconstruction due to its biocompatibility with the bone tissue. This biocompatibility as well as other physical and chemical properties of the hydroxyapatite can be modified by the addition of different ions to its structure. Niobium (V) ion has not been commonly used in the hydroxyapatite synthesis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of hydrothermal route in the niobium (V) doped hydroxyapatite synthesis. The route used the niobium ammonium oxalate (NH4H2[NbO(C2O4)3].3H2O) complex as a niobium (V) ion precursor. The addition of citric acid and urea in the hydrothermal route is used for the control of synthesis pH and precipitation rate. Pure sample and sample added with 5.3 ppm of niobium (V) ion were prepared. The coexistence of other phases besides the hydroxyapatite was not observed in any of the samples through the use of X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The FTIR technique revealed the presence of hydroxyapatite characteristic functional groups. The scanning electron microscopy analysis showed the formation of agglomerates composed of round particles, confirmed by the transmission electron microscopy technique. The X-ray fluorescence spectroscopic analysis detected the presence of niobium in the doped sample. The results showed that niobium (V) doped hydroxyapatite can be synthesized by means of hydrothermal route, which may be considered as huge potential for future application in bioceramics.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The aim of this study was to carry out a broad chemical investigation of selected soil samples from Antarctica, near different Antarctic scientific stations. Soil samples collected in background reference sites, with minimal human impact, far away from the stations were used as control samples. Anthropogenic places at the vicinity of the following stations Frei Montalva and Escudero (Chile), Great Wall (China), Bellingshausen (Russia) and Artigas (Uruguay) were studied as a priori human impacted sites. The sequential extraction procedure (SEP) based on the BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) protocol was applied for Cu, Mn and Zn determination. With the help of PCA (principal component analysis) and PARAFAC (parallel factor analysis) methods, meaningful information was extracted from the raw data obtained from SEP procedure. Soil samples affected by the scientific stations are associated with higher heavy metal contents (especially Cu and Zn, between the investigated metals, in the most labile fractions of the SEP applied). This pollution signal is associated with diesel use for the energy generation by the Antarctic stations.

Extracts obtained from 57 marine-derived fungal strains were analyzed by HPLC-PDA, TLC and ¹H NMR. The analyses showed that the growth conditions affected the chemical profile of crude extracts. Furthermore, the majority of fungal strains which produced either bioactive of chemically distinctive crude extracts have been isolated from sediments or marine algae. The chemical investigation of the antimycobacterial and cytotoxic crude extract obtained from two strains of the fungus Beauveria felina have yielded cyclodepsipeptides related to destruxins. The present approach constitutes a valuable tool for the selection of fungal strains that produce chemically interesting or biologically active secondary metabolites.

Little is known about the soil diversity of Brazilian highland regions, despite their recent upgrading in view of the ecotouristic potential of some areas. Chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological attributes of ten soil profiles along two transects in the quartzitic domains of the Ibitipoca State Park, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, were studied in relation to their pedogenesis. At local level, soil formation is more closely associated with litho-structural elements (lithology, faults and fractures), than with topographical variations. The soils are Al-saturated (> 60% at the surface), negatively charged, and markedly dystrophic. The existing CEC is almost entirely attributable to the organic matter contribution, in view of the very low clay fraction activity. Results revealed the marked presence of low crystallinity Fe-forms, commonly found in high altitude vegetation, where organic matter accumulation inhibits Fe and Al oxide crystallization. All soils are kaolinitic, even the ferrocarbic Spodosol, and some contain 2:1 clays such as illite and hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite, indicating their resistance to weathering under the present pedoenvironmental conditions. Micromorphological analyses of the Spodosol presented typical features of a podzolization process: predominant quartz grain interbedded between polymorphic organic matter aggregates at the surface, single grain structure and presence of "ortstein" in the spodic horizon (Bs), formed by organic-mineral and mineral materials, monomorphic and fractured, with co-precipitated amorphous Al, Si and Fe. The micropedological features of the spodic Bs are similar to those of the "placic" horizon, with two depositional ferruginous covers; one reddish-brown (ferridrite and hematite) and the other yellowish (goethite). The intergranular plasma of the spodic horizon comprises two different plasmic zones: one of kaolinitic composition with a higher aluminium content, and a ferruginous one, richer in silica, suggesting an amorphous silica participation in the Fe-cemented ortstein (or placic) horizon of the Spodosol.
