ABSTRACT Accurate wood volume predictions are critical in hyperdiverse forests because each species has specific size and shape traits. Although generic models at a multispecies level were widely used in Amazonian managed forests, they are subject to more significant bias due to interspecific variability. We used an extensive database of wood volume collected in managed forests to test the hypothesis that generic models violate the independence assumption due to that predictions vary with species-specific size. Our hypothesis was proved as residuals of the generic model were conditioned to species and specific size. The multilevel models were more accurate both in fitting and validation procedures, and accounted for variance derived from species and specific size, providing a more reliable prediction. However, we found that the size-specific models have a similar predictive ability to species-specific models for new predictions. This implies more practical estimates in hyperdiverse forests where fitting species-specific models can be complex. The findings are crucial for sustainable forest management as they allow for more reliable wood volume estimates, leading to less financial uncertainty and preventing damage to forest stocks through under or over-exploitation.

RESUMO Previsões precisas do volume de madeira são críticas em florestas hiperdiversas, pois cada espécie tem características específicas de tamanho e forma. Embora modelos genéricos em nível multiespécie sejam amplamente utilizados em florestas manejadas na Amazônia, eles estão sujeitos a maiores vieses devido à variabilidade interespecífica. Usamos um extenso banco de dados de volume de madeira coletado em florestas manejadas para testar a hipótese de que modelos genéricos violam a suposição de independência, pois as previsões variam de acordo com o tamanho específico da espécie. Nossa hipótese foi comprovada pois os resíduos do modelo genérico foram condicionados à espécie e ao tamanho específico. Os modelos multiníveis foram mais precisos nos procedimentos de ajuste e de validação e contabilizaram a variância derivada de espécies e do tamanho específico, fornecendo previsões mais confiáveis. Descobrimos que os modelos específicos de tamanho têm capacidade preditiva semelhante aos específicos da espécie para novas previsões. Isto implica em estimativas mais práticas em florestas hiperdiversas, onde pode ser complexo o ajuste de modelos específicos por espécies. As conclusões são cruciais para o manejo florestal sustentável, pois permitem estimativas mais confiáveis do volume de madeira, conduzindo a menor incerteza financeira e evitando danos aos estoques florestais devido à sub ou superexploração.

Abstract This work aimed to evaluate the monthly growth rate of 100 trees spread in different diametric classes and ecological groups of a secondary forest in the municipality of Igarapé-Açu, Pará, Brazil. These were selected randomly from 30 permanent plots and classified into 5 diametrical classes and separated into two ecological groups: Pioneers and Non-Pioneers. The monthly periodic increment (MPI) in diameter was measured for 11 months by means of diametric bands using digital calipers. The MPI means were evaluated by an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s mean comparison test. Individuals from both ecological groups had similar increments in the DBH IV diameter class and different in the others. There were mean increments in the diametric classes that did not differ within the ecological groups. The trees analyzed differed in the diametric growth rate according to the diametric classes, ecological groups and the month of analysis.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os aspectos ecológicos e sucessionais de um fragmento de floresta subtropical via projeção da estrutura diamétrica de diferentes grupos ecológicos com uso da Matriz de Transição. Com base em medições de 2009 e 2012 de todas as árvores acima de 10 cm de DAP, foram realizadas projeções da distribuição diamétrica, bem como análise da dinâmica de três agrupamentos de espécies: Pioneiras; Não Pioneiras; e Floresta como um todo. Simulações da dinâmica dos agrupamentos foram feitas até 2027 após validação do método. O método de projeção se mostrou aderente em todos os casos, apresentando maior precisão quando utilizado o intervalo de classe de 5 cm. As análises indicaram tendência de substituição gradual das espécies pioneiras, sugerindo avanço sucessional no fragmento florestal estudado, bem como eficiência do método para análise da dinâmica dos grupos ecológicos estudados.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the ecological and successional aspects of a subtropical forest fragment by projection of the diameter distribution of different ecological groups, using transition matrix model. Based on measurements of 2009 and 2012 of all trees above 10 cm of DBH, projection of the diameter distribution as well as analysis of forest dynamic were made for three species groups: Pioneer; Non Pioneers, and the whole forest. Simulations of the dynamics of the groups were made until 2027 after method validation. The projection method was adherent in all cases, with higher precision when using the 5cm class interval. The analysis made indicated a gradual substitution tendency of the pioneer species, suggesting a successional advance in the forest fragment under study, as well as an efficiency of the projection method for dynamics analysis of the ecological groups studied.

Nesta pesquisa, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da árvore marginal nos estimadores populacionais obtidos pelos métodos de amostragem de Bitterlich (1948), Prodan (1968) e Strand (1958). A base de dados foi um censo realizado em fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Montana situado no Campus III da UFPR, Curitiba - PR. Todas as árvores com DAP ≥ 10 cm foram medidas, identificadas, georreferenciadas, e consideradas como possíveis centros das unidades amostrais dos métodos. De todas as árvores, 185 foram sorteadas, aleatoriamente, como início dos pontos amostrais para a estimativa de N.ha-1, G.ha-1 e V.ha-1 para os três tratamentos distintos: sem a influência da árvore marginal, contagem de meia árvore e contagem da árvore marginal corrigida pelo Fator P de Péllico Netto (1994). Independente do método e do tratamento utilizado ocorreu superestimativa do N.ha-1. Para a estimativa da área basal, bem como do volume por hectare, o método de Bitterlich apresentou os melhores resultados, seguido de Strand e Prodan, respectivamente. A aplicação do fator P nas árvores marginais não melhorou expressivamente os estimadores populacionais a ponto de se diferenciar satisfatoriamente da estimativa gerada com as árvores marginais, contadas como meia árvore ou sem a sua influência.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the borderline tree in the population parameters estimated by Bitterlich (1948), Prodan (1968) and Strand (1958) sampling methods. The database came from a census carried out in a fragment of Mixed Ombrophylous Montana Forest located in the Campus III, of Federal University of Parana, Curitiba-PR, Brazil. All trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm were measured, identified, georeferenced, and considered as possible plot center of the sampling units in each method. The sampling simulation was conducted with 185 randomly selected points for the estimation of N.ha-1, G.ha-1 and V.ha-1 to three different treatments: without the influence of borderline tree, count half borderline tree and count of partial borderline tree corrected by the P factor introduced by Péllico Netto (1994). Regardless of the method and the treatment used there was always an overestimation of N.ha-1. To estimate the basal area and volume per hectare, the Bitterlich method achieved the best results, followed by Strand and Prodan, respectively. Application of P factor in borderline trees did not cause a significant improvement in the population estimators compared with the estimates generated by borderline trees counted as half a tree or without its influence.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi construir curvas de produção e de incremento corrente mensal (ICM), e analisar o efeito de variáveis climáticas no crescimento mensal em diâmetro e altura de Pinus taeda L. e Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze, no período de três anos, em fase juvenil. Para tanto, foram selecionadas 30 árvores de cada espécie, sendo, mensalmente, entre junho de 2006 e julho de 2009, medidas as variáveis diâmetro e altura. As variáveis climáticas são provenientes de duas estações meteorológicas do SIMEPAR, próximas aos plantios monitorados. Para a análise do crescimento, foram desenvolvidas curvas de incremento e produção mensais, bem como análise da matriz de correlação dos dados e regressão pelo processo stepwise. Na análise do crescimento, observaram-se maiores ICMs entre outubro e fevereiro. As matrizes de correlação indicaram forte relação do ICM com temperatura, pressão atmosférica e fotoperíodo. Os modelos ajustados por stepwise, incluindo variáveis climáticas, apresentaram boas estatísticas de ajuste.

The objective of this research was to construct curves of yield and current monthly increment (CMI) and analyze the effect of climate variables on the current monthly increment of diameter and height of young Pinus taeda L. and Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze during a three-year period. To this end, 30 trees of each species were selected and had their diameter and height measures taken monthly between June 2006 and July 2009. The climatic variables were obtained from two meteorological stations of SIMEPAR, located near the monitored stands. For growth assessment, curves of current monthly increment and yield were developed. Analysis of correlation matrixes among the studied variables and regression by stepwise process were also carried out. In the growth analysis, higher CMIs were observed between October and February. The correlation matrixes indicated that CMI correlated strongly with temperature, atmospheric pressure and photoperiod. The models adjusted by the stepwise process, including climate variables, showed good fit statistics.

Estudos fitossociológicos baseados em amostragem têm sido muito comuns ao longo dos últimos 20 anos, no entanto, são raramente realizados usando a enumeração completa das árvores (censo). Assim sendo, nesta pesquisa, objetivou-se comparar os parâmetros fitossociológicos entre os três diferentes estratos de um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista (FOM), quais sejam: FOM Montana, FOM Montana de Bordadura e FOM Aluvial. Essa área de 13,71 ha foi topograficamente dividida em blocos de 50 x 50 metros para melhor controle do inventário florestal a 100% (censo). Todas as árvores com CAP (circunferência medida a 1,30 m do solo) ≥ 31,5 cm foram medidas, georreferenciadas, numeradas, pintadas no DAP e identificadas em nível de espécie. No estrato FOM Montana, a espécie com maior valor de cobertura (VC) foi Araucaria angustifolia, com 30,6%, seguida de Casearia sylvestris com 25,8%. Já, na FOM Montana de Bordadura a espécie que procedeu a Araucaria angustifolia (29,0%), foi Gochnatia polymorpha com 27,2% de VC. O terceiro estrato, FOM Aluvial, apresentou como espécie predominante Schinus terebinthifolius (55,5%), seguida por Sebastiania commersoniana (27,7%), ambas, características de ambientes aluvionares. Dessa maneira, o estudo permitiu observar que nos três estratos houve a predominância de espécies secundárias de caráter pioneiro, comprovando que a área em questão encontra-se em um estágio secundário de sucessão ecológica em razão de um processo exploratório no passado.

Phytosociological studies based on sampling have been very common in the last 20 years, however, they are rarely carried out using complete enumeration of trees (census). This research compare the phytossociological parameters between three different strata from a remnant of Ombrophylous Mixed Forest (OMF), which are: OMF Montana, Border OMF Montana and OMF Alluvial. The area of 13.71 was topographically divided in blocks of 50 x 50 meters for a better control of the 100% forest inventory (census). All trees with CBH (circumference measured at 1,30 m above ground) ≥ 31,5 centimeters were measured, georeferencied, numbered, painted at DBH and identified at species level. In the strata OMF Montana the species with the highest Value of Coverage (VC) was Araucaria angustifolia, with 30.6%, followed by Casearia sylvestris with 25.8%. In the Border OMF Montana the species that succeeded Araucaria angustifolia (29.0%) was Gochnatia polymorpha with 27.2% of VC. The third strata, OMF Alluvial, presented as predominant species Schinus terebinthifolius (55,5%), followed by Sebastiania commersoniana (27,7%), both characteristics of alluvial environments. In the three strata there was prevalence of secondary pioneer species, proving that the area is in a secondary stage of ecological succession due to past exploratory process.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a distribuição espacial de um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Montana, bem como de três espécies de grupos sucessionais distintos pertencentes a ela, pela função K de Ripley. Os dados utilizados provêm de um censo realizado em um fragmento localizado no Campus Jardim Botânico da UFPR, Curitiba-PR, onde todas as árvores com DAP acima de 10cm foram georreferenciadas. Foi utilizada uma parcela de 4 ha para a análise da distribuição espacial da floresta bem como das espécies de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) O. Kuntze (Araucária), Casearia Sylvestris Sw. (Cafezeiro) e Cedrela fissilis Vell. (Cedro). Foi analisada a relação espacial entre as espécies, bem como a relação espacial entre classes diamétricas destas. A floresta apresentou uma distribuição espacial aleatória, entretanto, as três espécies selecionadas apresentaram um padrão espacial agregado, quando analisadas separadamente. O Cafezeiro apresentou relação de atração com a Araucária e com o Cedro; estes, por sua vez, apresentaram relação de repulsão entre si. A relação espacial entre classes de DAP da Araucária foi de atração entre os indivíduos de classes menores com os indivíduos maiores. Este resultado reflete a forma de dispersão de sementes das espécies, em que a regeneração ocorre em proximidade às árvores parentais. Para o cafezeiro e o Cedro, ocorreu agregação apenas entre os indivíduos menores.

The objective of this research was to analyze the spatial distribution of a Mixed Ombrophylus Forest fragment, as well as of three species pertaining to distinct successional groups belonging to the same, by the Ripley's K function. The data came from a census carried out in a fragment located in the Campus Botanical Garden, UFPR, Curitiba - PR, Brazil, where all trees with DBH above 10cm were georeferenced. One plot with 4 ha was used for the analysis of the spatial distribution of the forest and individually for the species of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) O. Kuntze, Casearia Sylvestris Sw. and Cedrela fissilis Vell. The spatial relationship between species, as well as the spatial relationship between diameter classes of the same were also analyzed. The forest showed a random spatial distribution, however, the three selected species showed an aggregate spatial distribution when analyzed individually. The Casearia Sylvestris presented an attraction relationship with Araucaria angustifolia and Cedrela fissilis, and these trees in turn, were related to repulsion between them. The spatial relationship between DBH classes of Araucaria angustifolia was attraction between individuals of smaller classes with larger individuals. This result reflects the form of seed dispersal of species, where regeneration occurs in the proximity to the parental trees. For the Casearia Sylvestris and Cedrela fissilis, aggregation occurred only between the smaller individuals.

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo testar funções densidade de probabilidade para a distribuição das variáveis altura total, área transversal e volume individual, para três diferentes intervalos de classe. Os dados provieram da medição dos diâmetros (DAP), alturas totais e estimativas dos volumes individuais de 338 pinheiros de um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista, com 15,24 ha, situado no Campus Jardim Botânico da UFPR, Curitiba-PR. Foram ajustadas dez funções, incluindo modelos comumente utilizados na distribuição diamétrica e outros desenvolvidos recentemente e aplicadas na ciência florestal. Os critérios de seleção foram o teste de aderência de Kolmogorov - Smirnov, erro padrão da estimativa em porcentagem e o coeficiente de determinação ajustado. Foram usados três intervalos de classe determinados pelas regras de Sturges, Dixon & Kronmal e Velleman. A função Normal, para a variável altura, e Weber, para a distribuição da área transversal e volume individual, propiciaram os melhores ajustes, considerando os três intervalos de classe adotados. Os modelos se ajustaram melhor para intervalos de classe de maior tamanho, obtidos pela regra de Sturges.

This study aimed to test probability density functions for the distribution of variables total height, transverse area and individual volume, considering three different class intervals. Data were obtained from the measurement of diameter (DBH) and total height and from estimation of the individual volume of 338 pine trees in a fragment of Mixed Ombrophylous Forest with an area of 15.24 ha, which is located in Jardim Botânico campus of UFPR, Curitiba-PR. Ten functions were fitted, including commonly used models for diameter distribution as well as other recently developed models applied to forest science. Selection criteria included Kolmogorov-Smirnov adherence test, standard error of estimate in percentage and adjusted coefficient of determination. Three class intervals were used as obtained by Sturges, Dixon & Kronmal, and Velleman criteria. The Normal function for variable height, and the Weber function for distribution of transverse area and individual volume, provided the best fit, considering the three class intervals adopted. The models fitted better for larger size class intervals as obtained by Sturges rule.

Os objetivos deste estudo foram ajustar e selecionar funções de densidade probabilística que caracterizem a estrutura diamétrica desse fragmento e das espécies: Cedrela fissilis (Cedro), Luehea divaricata (Açoita Cavalo), Gochnatia polymorpha (Cambará), Sebastiania commersoniana (Branquilho) e Casearia sylvestris (Cafezeiro) de um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista com 15,24ha, localizado em Curitiba, Paraná. Para avaliar a distribuição diamétrica dessa floresta e das cinco espécies selecionadas, foram ajustadas sete funções probabilísticas para intervalos de classe de 5cm. Segundo os critérios de seleção adotados, o modelo que melhor representou a distribuição diamétrica para toda a floresta, o cedro, o cambará e o branquilho foi o de Weber; para o cafezeiro, a função Gamma (Adaptada) foi a mais eficiente e para o açoita cavalo nenhuma dessas funções foi aderente. O branquilho, o açoita cavalo, o cafezeiro e a floresta como um todo apresentaram distribuição em "J" invertido ou decrescente. Entretanto, o cedro e o cambará apresentaram distribuição tendendo à unimodalidade com forte assimetria à direita.

The objective of this study was to adjust and select probability density functions that characterize the diametric structure of this forest fragment and for the species: Cedrela fissilis, Luehea divaricata, Gochnatia polymorpha, Sebastiania commersoniana and Casearia sylvestris for a 15.24 hectare fragment of Mixed Ombrophylous Forest, located in Curitiba, State of Paraná. In order to evaluate the diametric distributions of this forest and the five selected species, seven probability functions were adjusted for 5cm class intervals. According to the criteria of selection adopted, the model that best represented the diametric distributions for the whole forest, Cedrela fissilis, Gochnatia polymorpha and Sebastiania commersoniana was the Weber model; for Casearia sylvestris, the Gamma function (adapted) was the most efficient, and for Luehea divaricata, none of these functions showed adherence. The Sebastiania commersoniana, Luehea divaricata, Casearia sylvestris and the forest as a whole showed inverted "J" or decreasing distribution, while, Cedrela fissilis and Gochnatia polymorpha showed an almost unimodal distribution with a strong asymmetry to the right.
