ABSTRACT The ‘Gueroba’ fruit can be used to produce flours with potential for the development of new products from the ‘Cerrado’ socio-biodiversity. The objective was to estimate the drying kinetics and determine the effective diffusion coefficient and activation energy for the pulp of ‘gueroba’ fruits subjected to different drying temperatures. ‘Gueroba’ fruits were manually pulped, removing the mesocarp with the epicarp, and this material was identified as the pulp. The material was subjected to oven drying at temperatures of 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C. Nonlinear regression models were fitted to the experimental data. The most adequate model was selected through the coefficient of determination, mean relative and estimated errors, Chi-square test, AIC and BIC. As the drying temperature increases, the processing time to achieve the same moisture content decreases, due to the increase in water diffusivity inside the product. The Midilli model showed the best fit to the experimental data obtained. The effective diffusion coefficients of the pulp of ‘gueroba’ fruits showed magnitudes between 3.11 x 10-9 to 5.84 x 10-9 m2 s-1 for temperatures from 40 to 70 °C. The activation energy of the process was 18.34 kJ mol-1.

Abstract Marine environment is one of the most important sources regarding natural products research. Besides, marine microorganisms have been denominated as a talented natural source for discovery of new leads. Although the association of macroalgae and fungi has been described regarding ecological issues, there is a lack of studies about marine seaweed endophytic fungi. In this context, the goal of this study was to evaluate cytotoxic, antifungal and antibacterial activities of endophytic fungi isolated from the Brazilian marine seaweed Bostrychia tenella (J.V. Lamouroux) J. Agardh (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta). Forty-five endophytic microorganism strains were isolated from B. tenella. Crude extracts and organic fractions of ten selected strains were obtained after growth in rice medium. Samples were evaluated for cytotoxicity, antifungal and antibacterial assays. Penicillium strains showed positive results in a diversity of assays, and other five strains were active in at least one test. In addition, cytochalasin D was isolated from Xylaria sp. This alga is composed of a microbiological potential, since its endophytic strains exhibited remarkable biological properties. Moreover, cytochalasin D isolation has confirmed chemical potential of marine endophytic strains. This is the first study in which cultured fungi isolates from the Brazilian macroalga B. tenella were evaluated concerning biological properties. Results corroborated that this species could be a pharmaceutical source from marine environment. Furthermore, Acremonium implicatum is being firstly described as marine endophyte and Xylaria sp., Trichoderma atroviride and Nigrospora oryzae as marine seaweed endophytes. Thus, this work reports the first study relating detailed isolation, cultivation and biological evaluation (cytotoxic, antifungal and antibacterial) of endophytes Penicillium decaturense and P. waksmanii from the Brazilian marine red alga B. tenella. We are also reporting the isolation of cytochalasin D, a known antitumor and antibiotic compound, from Xylaria sp. strain. Despite widespread prevalence in terrestrial and marine habitats, this present work describes the first occurrence of cytochalasin D as a metabolite from marine seaweed endophyte.

Brevianamides A and C are isomeric cyclic peptides with several reported biological activities, isolated from diverse microorganisms. Currently, there has been no previous investigation of brevianamide fragmentation utilizing electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In this work experiments were carried out in the positive mode using two different spectrometers (low and high resolution) with an ESI source. Computational chemistry studies helped identify the protonation sites based upon atomic charges, proton affinities and molecular orbitals, computed using the B3LYP/6-31++G (d,p) model. The data suggests that the presence of the allylic position of the lactamic N in brevianamides C governs its fragmentation pathways. Distinguishing between brevianamides A and C using positive ion electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ESI(+)MS/MS) is made possible by the spectral difference of each isomer and offers an alternative to other spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Babesiosis is one of the most important diseases affecting livestock agriculture worldwide. Animals from the subspecies Bos taurus indicus are more resistant to babesiosis than those from Bos taurus taurus. The genera Babesia and Plasmodium are Apicomplexa hemoparasites and share features such as invasion of red blood cells (RBC). The glycoprotein Duffy is the only human erythrocyte receptor for Pasmodium vivax and a mutation which abolishes expression of this glycoprotein on erythrocyte surfaces is responsible for making the majority of people originating from the indigenous populations of West Africa resistant to P. vivax. The current work detected and quantified the Duffy antigen on Bos taurus indicus and Bos taurus taurus erythrocyte surfaces using a polyclonal antibody in order to investigate if differences in susceptibility to Babesia are due to different levels of Duffy antigen expression on the RBCs of these animals, as is known to be the case in human beings for interactions of Plasmodium vivax-Duffy antigen. ELISA tests showed that the antibody that was raised against Duffy antigens detected the presence of Duffy antigen in both subspecies and that the amount of this antigen on those erythrocyte membranes was similar. These results indicate that the greater resistance of B. taurus indicus to babesiosis cannot be explained by the absence or lower expression of Duffy antigen on RBC surfaces.

This study describes the isolation and structural determination of two amides, isolated for the first time: N,4-dihydroxy-N-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-benzamide (0.019%) and N,4-dihydroxy-N-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-benzeneacetamide (0.023%). These amides, produced by the red macroalgae Bostrychia radicans, had their structures assigned by NMR spectral data and MS analyses. In addition, this chemical study led to the isolation of cholesterol, heptadecane, squalene, trans-phytol, neophytadiene, tetradecanoic and hexadecanoic acids, methyl hexadecanoate and methyl 9-octadecenoate, 4-(methoxymethyl)-phenol, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, methyl 4-hydroxybenzeneacetate, methyl 2-hydroxy-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanoate, hydroquinone, methyl 4-hydroxymandelate, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, 4-hydroxybenzeneacetic acid and (4-hydroxyphenyl)-oxo-acetaldehyde. This is the first report concerning these compounds in B. radicans, contributing by illustrating the chemical diversity within the Rhodomelaceae family.

The effect of different levels of nitrogen on coriander yield was evaluated at the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, in Areia, Brazil, from June to August/2001. The experimental design was of randomized blocks, with five nitrogen levels (0.0; 20; 40; 60 and 80 kg ha-1 of N), and four replications. The cv. Verdão was planted in spacing of 20 cm x 5.0 cm in plots of 2.0 m². Evaluations performed 50 days after sowing indicated that plant height increased linearly in proportion to the increase in doses of N. The maximum N level (80 kg ha-1) provided an increment of 17.4% in plant height in comparison to the control. Green mass yield increased linearly, as a function of N levels, with the maximum value of 5.4 kg m-2 using 80 kg ha-1 of N, corresponding to an increment of 62% in comparison to control (3.3 kg.m-2).
