Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos genéticos aditivos e não aditivos sobre a eficiência de uso de P e a responsividade ao nutriente em linhagens de milho. Nove linhagens contrastantes - eficientes ou não quanto ao uso de P - foram avaliadas em cruzamentos dialélicos, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, por dois anos, sob dois níveis de disponibilidade do nutriente em Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro distrófico. As linhagens L3 e L228-3 apresentaram os maiores efeitos médios da capacidade geral de combinação (CGC, ), o que é indício de eficiência, na ausência de P, e de responsividade, na presença. Os cruzamentos L51502020 x L22 e L36 x L56.800.84 apresentaram os maiores efeitos médios da capacidade específica de combinação (CEC, ), na presença e na ausência de P, respectivamente. Os componentes quadráticos para CGC foram superiores aos da CEC, na ausência de P, e inferiores, na presença, o que mostra que os efeitos aditivos predominaram na eficiência de uso, e os não aditivos, na responsividade ao nutriente. A capacidade combinatória dos genótipos interagiu com os ambientes; portanto, a seleção do melhor progenitor e da melhor combinação híbrida deve ser realizada para ambiente específico. As linhagens apresentam complementariedade gênica quanto à eficiência de uso de P.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate additive and nonadditive genetic effects on responsiveness and the P use efficiency by maize lines. Nine contrasting inbred lines - efficient or not regarding their P use efficiency - were evaluated in diallel crosses, in a randomized complete block design, for two years, under two availability levels of the nutrient in an Oxisol. The lines L3 and L228-3 showed the highest average effects for general combining ability (GCA, ), indicating use efficiency in the absence of P, and responsiveness, in the presence. The crosses L51502020 x L22 and L36 x L56.800.84 had the highest average effects for specific combining ability (SCA, ) in the presence and in the absence of P, respectively. The quadratic components for GCA were higher than those of SCA, in the absence of P, and lower in the presence, showing that the additive effects predominated in P use efficiency, and the nonadditive ones predominated in the plant responsiveness to the nutrient. The genotype combining ability interacted with the environments; therefore, the selection of the best parent and of the best hybrid combination should be done in specific environments. The inbred lines show genic complementary action regarding P use efficiency.

This study aims to describe the single-cross, super sweet corn hybrid BRS Vivi, with above-average ear diameter, light-colored grains and competitiveness with other sweet corn cultivars. BRS Vivi is a contribution to the expansion of the range of available cultivars on the market and the genetic basis of sweet corn in Brazil.

É escassa a realização de pesquisas agronômicas com o milho em fronteiras agrícolas, principalmente quanto à avaliação de cultivares. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar 128 genótipos entre 2008 e 2009 em região de fronteira agrícola no Estado do Maranhão. Os experimentos foram delineados em látices com duas repetições. Os genótipos foram avaliados pela produção de grãos em modelo misto, tendo como efeitos fixos o intercepto e o efeito de experimento. Os efeitos aleatórios foram os de genótipos, classe genética (híbrido simples, triplo ou duplo e variedade) e bloco incompleto/repetição/ambiente. O efeito de genótipo foi significativo pelo teste da razão da verossimilhança em todos os modelos, destacando-se os valores genotípicos dos híbridos simples DKB177, AG8088 e DKB390, o híbrido triplo PL6882, o híbrido duplo BM502 e a variedade de polinização aberta SHS3031.

Agricultural research, mainly focused on the evaluation of maize cultivars along agricultural frontiers, are scarce. This study assessed 128 maize genotypes in the agricultural frontier region of the State of Maranhão, between 2008 and 2009. The experiment was arranged in a lattice design with two replications. The genotypes were evaluated for grain yield in a mixed model, with fixed intercept and experimental effects. The random effects were genotype, genetic class (single-, double or triple-cross hybrid and variety), and incomplete block/replication/ environment. The genotype effect was significant by the likelihood ratio test in all models, highlighting the genotypic values of the single-cross hybrids DKB177, AG8088 and DKB390, the triple-cross PL6882, the double-cross BM502 and of the open-pollinated variety SHS3031.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, simultaneamente, o desempenho produtivo, a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade de cultivares de milho, em ensaios desbalanceados, utilizando-se o método da Média Harmônica da Performance Relativa de Valores Genotípicos (MHPRVG). A produtividade de grãos de 45 cultivares, compreendendo híbridos e variedades, foi avaliada em 49 ambientes, em dois anos agrícolas. Na safra de 2007/2008 foram avaliados 36 cultivares e na safra seguinte, 25 cultivares, sendo 16 cultivares comuns às duas safras. Foram realizadas análises estatísticas no contexto de modelos mistos considerando genótipos como aleatórios e repetições dentro de ambientes como fatores fixos. Houve alta precisão experimental nas análises conjuntas, com estimativas de acurácia superiores a 92 %. Apesar da existência de interação genótipos x ambientes, foram identificados híbridos e variedades com elevada adaptabilidade e estabilidade. Os resultados demonstram que o método MHPRVG mostra-se adequado para utilização em programas de melhoramento de milho.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance, adaptability and stability of corn cultivars simultaneously in unbalanced experiments, using the method of harmonic means of the relative performance of genetic values. The grain yield of 45 cultivars, including hybrids and varieties, was evaluated in 49 environments in two growing seasons. In the 2007/2008 growing season, 36 cultivars were evaluated and in 2008/2009 25 cultivars, of which 16 were used in both seasons. Statistical analyses were performed based on mixed models, considering genotypes as random and replications within environments as fixed factors. The experimental precision in the combined analyses was high (accuracy estimates > 92 %). Despite the existence of genotype x environment interaction, hybrids and varieties with high adaptability and stability were identified. Results showed that the method of harmonic means of the relative performance of genetic values is a suitable method for maize breeding programs.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi conhecer a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade de variedades e híbridos de milho, quando submetidos a diferentes condições ambientais do Meio-Norte brasileiro. Para isso, procedeu-se à avaliação de 22 híbridos, em uma rede experimental, e de 20 cultivares (variedades e híbridos) em outra rede, em diferentes ambientes, utilizando-se o delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. Os híbridos mostraram melhor adaptação que as variedades. Em ambas as redes detectaram-se diferenças entre os genótipos e os ambientes e comportamento inconsistente desses genótipos na média dos ambientes. As cultivares diferiram quanto a adaptabilidade nos ambientes desfavoráveis. Entre as cultivares de melhor adaptação (b0 > média geral), os híbridos PL 1335 e SHS 5050 e a variedade SHS 500 mostraram-se exigentes nas condições desfavoráveis (b1 > 1) e o híbrido SHS 5070 e a variedade AL 34 mostraram ser pouco exigentes nessas mesmas condições (b1 < 1). Os híbridos que mostraram adaptabilidade ampla (b0 > média geral e b1 = 1) tornam-se de importância para a agricultura da região, tais como: DKB 390, DAS 8480, DKB 455, BRS 1010, BRS 1030, dentre outros.

The objective of this study was to determine the adaptability and stability of varieties and hybrids of corn, when subjected to different environmental conditions in the Mid-Northern region of Brazil. For this, we proceeded to the assessment of 22 hybrids in an experimental grid, and 20 cultivars (varieties and hybrids) in another grid, in different environments, using an experimental design of randomized blocks with three replications. The hybrids showed better adaptation than did the varieties. In both grids differences were detected among genotypes and environments, and inconsistent behavior of these genotypes was detected across the average of the environments. The cultivars differed in their adaptability in unfavorable environments. Among those cultivars which best adapted (b0>overall average), the hybrids PL 1335 and SHS 5050, and the variety SHS 500, showed to be demanding under unfavorable conditions (b1>1) and the hybrid SHS 5070 and variety AL 34, proved to be undemanding under these same conditions (b 1<1). The hybrids which demonstrated wide adaptability (b0> overall average and b1=1) such as: DKB 390, DAS 8480, DKB 455, BRS 1010 and BRS 1030, among others, become important for agriculture in the region.

As cultivares de milho BRS Cipotânea e BRS Diamantina foram desenvolvidas pela Embrapa Milho e Sorgo a partir de acessos do Banco de Germoplasma de Milho. A avaliação foi participativa. Essas variedades foram desenvolvidas visando disponibilizar aos agricultores variedades de milho com palha apropriada para o uso artesanal.

The maize cultivars BRS Cipotânea and BRS Diamantina were developed from accessions of the Maize Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Maize and Sorghum. The evaluation was participative, performed by scientists and end-users. The varieties were developed to provide farmers with maize varieties suitable for corn-husk crafts.

Isozyme biochemical marker may be useful tool for genomic analysis of maize populations undergoing recurrent selection. Thus, isozymes markers was utilized for assess the changes in the genetic variability and distance in a Brazilian composite population of popcorn following four cycles of recurrent selection for yield. One hundred and ninety-six half-sib families were evaluated from each cycle and the ten highest-yielding families (5.2%) were recombined to produce the next cycle. Isozyme analysis considered 80 seedlings per cycle. Simple linear regression equations were estimated among the allele frequencies in each locus in function of the selection cycles, the genetic distances among the cycles and the average heterozygosity per locus for each cycle. Regression analysis did not reveal any common trend for changes in allele frequencies presumably due to selection. The estimates of the number of polymorphic locus, of the mean of allele per locus and the mean heterozygosity did not reveal any reduction in variability. It was concluded that four selection cycles did not cause relevant changes in the variability or genetic distance among the selection cycles of CMS-43 popcorn population. Isozymes markers analysis showed that the number of recombined half-sib families in recurrent selection was suitable.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a heterose e seus componentes em 16 populações de milho de grãos brancos, de alta qualidade protéica. Estas populações foram divididas de acordo com o tipo de grão, para estabelecer grupos heteróticos diferentes. Os cruzamentos foram realizados entre populações dentadas e duras, seguindo o esquema dialélico parcial. Sete caracteres agronômicos foram avaliados em três locais, e quatro doenças foliares e a incidência de enfezamento, em um. O procedimento de quadrados mínimos foi aplicado à equação normal X'Xbeta = X'Y, para estimar os efeitos do modelo e suas respectivas somas de quadrados. Entre os componentes de heterose, na análise dialélica, detectou-se significância para heterose média em dias para o florescimento feminino e resistência a Puccinia polysora. As populações com performance superior no grupo dentado, independentemente da população dura usada no cruzamento, tendem a gerar híbridos intervarietais de produtividade superior. Na formação de compostos, são recomendadas as populações CMS 476, ZQP/B 103 e ZQP/B 101, do tipo dentado, e CMS 461, CMS 460, ZQP/B 104 e ZQP/B 102, do tipo duro, nesta ordem.

The objective of this work was to investigate heterosis and its components in 16 white grain maize populations presenting high quality protein. These populations were divided according to grain type in order to establish different heterosis groups. The crosses were carried out according to a partial diallel cross design among flint and dent populations. Seven agronomic traits were evaluated in three environments while four leaf diseases and incidence of corn stunt were evaluated in one. Least square procedure was applied to the normal equation X'Xbeta = X'Y, to estimate the model effects and their respective sum of squares. Among the heterosis components, in diallel analysis, significance for average heterosis in grain yield, number of days to female flowering and to all evaluated diseases was detected. Specific heterosis was significant for days to female flowering and resistance to Puccinia polysora. Results concerned to grain yield trait indicate that populations with superior performance in dent group, no matter what flint population group is used in crosses, tend to generate superior intervarietal hybrids. In decreasing order of preference, the dent type populations CMS 476, ZQP/B 103 and ZQP/B 101 and the flint type CMS 461, CMS 460, ZQP/B 104 and ZQP/B 102 are recommended to form composites.

Oito populações de milho-pipoca (CMS-42, CMS-43, Zélia, RS-20, Catedral, Zaeli, UEM-J1 e UEM-M2) foram avaliadas com o objetivo de obter estimativas de depressão por endogamia, componentes genéticos de média e comparar essas estimativas por grupos de populações. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, cujos tratamentos primários foram os níveis de endogamia (S1 e S0) e os tratamentos secundários, as populações, com três repetições, em dois anos agrícolas (1998/99 e 1999/00). Foram avaliadas várias características, com ênfase no rendimento de grãos (RG) e na capacidade de expansão (CE). O método de GARDNER (1965) foi empregado para obter as estimativas dos componentes genéticos de médias. Observaram-se menores valores de depressão por endogamia e predominância de efeitos gênicos aditivos para CE em relação ao RG. A depressão endogâmica para rendimento de grãos foi maior no grupo dos compostos em relação às populações não melhoradas e à população melhorada. A probabilidade de sucesso na obtenção de linhagens vigorosas e de alta capacidade de expansão é baixa para todas as populações.

Eight popcorn populations (CMS-42, CMS-43, Zelia, RS-20, Catedral, Zaeli, UEM-J1 and UEM-M2) were evaluated aiming at obtaintion of estimates of inbreeding depression and average genetic components and to compare these estimates to each genetic group. Each trial was carried out with plots in randomized complete block design with three replications in split-plot experiment, in which the plots were the inbreeding levels (S1 and S0) and in the sub-plots the populations in two years (1998/99 and 1999/00). The characteristics grain yield and popping expansion were evaluated. The GARDNER methodology (1965) was used for obtaining the estimates of average genetic components. It was observed lower values of inbreeding depression and predominance of additive effects for popping expansion in relation to yield. The values of inbreeding depression for grain yield were higher in the composite than in bath, improved and not improved varieties. Using these populations the probability of success in the obtaining vigorous and high popping expansion inbred lines is low.

O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar através das estimativas de parâmetros genéticos o potencial de um sintético de milho de grãos duros e de ciclo semiprecoce, para a formação de híbridos e/ou melhoramento intrapopulacional. Foram utilizadas 142 progênies endogâmicas S2 do Sin EEL Flint, em cruzamentos topcrosses com um Sintético heteroticamente contrastante. Essas progênies topcrosses foram avaliadas utilizando-se o delineamento em látice simples 12 x 12, e em dois locais de teste. Os maiores valores médios para PED foram observados para os topcrosses n.º 101 (12069kg ha-1) e nº 72 (11068Kg ha-1), tendo o primeiro apresentado comportamento específico para Londrina, e o segunda demonstrado comportamento superior nos dois ambientes. Os valores das estimativas dos parâmetros estudados foram semelhantes aos encontrados em alguns estudos conduzidos em condições tropicais. O grupo de progênies S2 da Sin EEL Flint conduziu a valores médios de <IMG SRC="/img/revistas/cr/v33n4/16678s03.gif" align="absmiddle">, CVg e h² similares aos encontrados na literatura para outros genótipos. Observa-se que esse Sintético possui suficiente variabilidade genética e potencial para extração de linhagens para formação de híbridos e como germoplasma em programas de melhoramento.

The objective of this study was to determine the genetic potential of a semi-early maize synthetic with flint type kernel (Sin EEL Flint). The estimation of genetic parameters was obtained with S2 progenies, and the performance of the progenies in hybrid combinations were evaluated. One hundred fourty-two S2 progenies of Sin EEL Flint were used. They were obtained by top crossings with a contrasting heterotic synthetic of dent type kernel. These topcross progenies were tested in a lattice design 12 x 12 with two replications in two locations, Sete Lagoas and Londrina. The selected topcross nº 101, with specific adaptation for Londrina. and nº72, being adapted to both locations, were the best yieldings (PED) with 12069Kg ha-1 and 11068Kg ha-1, respectively. Values of the estimated parameters for <IMG SRC="/img/revistas/cr/v33n4/16678s03.gif">, CVg and h² were similar to those found in other studies conducted in tropical conditions. It was observed that this synthetic has enough genetic and potential variability to inbred line extraction for hybrid production and to be used as germoplasm source in breeding programs.

Realizaram-se cruzamentos dialélicos entre nove populações de milho-pipoca (Zea mays L.) - UNB-2, RS-20, UEM-J1, UEM-M2, CMS-42, CMS-43, Viçosa, Beija-flor e a geração avançada do híbrido triplo Zélia - para a obtenção dos 36 híbridos F1's a fim de alcançar informação dos valores da capacidade combinatória e heterose. Essas populações e os F1's foram avaliados em ensaios, em dois anos agrícolas (98/99 e 99/00), em Iguatemi (PR), com três repetições por ano. Os resultados permitiram recomendar compostos formados entre as populações de alta capacidade geral de combinação (CGC) para rendimento de grãos, UNB-2 e CMS-42 e as populações de alta CGC para capacidade de expansão, Zélia, RS-20 e UEM-M2. As populações Beija-flor e RS-20 foram recomendadas para iniciar programa de seleção recorrente recíproca, pois se complementam em relação ao rendimento de grãos e à capacidade de expansão (CE). Para CE, houve heteroses positiva e negativa, verificando-se dominância não unidirecional.

A diallel set of crosses among nine varieties of popcorn (Zea mays L.) - UNB-2, RS-20, UEM-J1, UEM-M2, CMS 42, CMS 43, Viçosa, Beija-flor and advanced generation of hybrid three-way Zélia) and their hybrid combinations was carried out to obtain capacity hability and heterosis estimates. These varieties and F1's were evaluated in two crop years (98/99 and 99/00) with three replications each year in Iguatemi, State of Paraná, Brazil. The results allowed the synthesis of composts based in varieties of high combining ability for yield, like UNB-2 and CMS-42 and the varieties Zélia, RS-20 e UEM-M2 to popping expansion. The varieties Beija-flor and RS-20 were recommend to be used in a reciprocal recurrent selection program. For popping expansion there are positive and negative heterosis, indicating non unidericional dominance.

O melhoramento simultâneo da capacidade de expansão e da produtividade no milho pipoca são dificultados por causa da correlação negativa entre as duas características, mas o uso de índices de seleção permite contornar essa dificuldade. Em 1997/1998 foram avaliadas 166 famílias de meios-irmãos do composto de milho pipoca (Zea mays L.) CMS-43, na Embrapa-Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Milho e Sorgo, em Sete Lagoas, MG, no delineamento em blocos casualizados. Os índices de seleção empregados para predizer os ganhos por seleção foram os de Smith e Hazel, Pesek & Baker, Elston e de Williams. O índice de seleção de Smith e Hazel permitiu a predição de ganhos superiores em maior número de caracteres; com o índice de seleção de Williams não se verificou nenhum dado significativo. O uso de índices de seleção é adequado porque permite a predição de ganhos simultâneos nas duas principais características.

Simultaneous breeding for expansion volume and grain yield in popcorn (Zea mays L.) is difficult because of negative correlation between these traits. The use of selection indexes allows to overcome this difficulty. In 1997/1998, at Embrapa-Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Milho e Sorgo, in Sete Lagoas, MG, Brazil,166 half-sib families from CMS-43 popcorn were evaluated, using random blocks design. The selection indexes used were Smith and Hazel, Pesek & Baker, Elston and Williams. The selection index of Smith and Hazel allowed larger predicted gains in more traits, and on the contrary, the prediction using the selection index of Williams was insignificant. The use of selection indexes allows simultaneous prediction of gains in the two main traits.

The study of inbreeding depression is important for breeding strategies such as use of inbred progenies or extraction of inbreed lines. A diallel of 28 maize open-pollinated varieties was evaluated in 10 environments in the early 1990s. At the same time, S1 populations for each of the 28 varieties were evaluated in the same 10 experiments (environments). Yield reductions of the populations from S0 to S1 (mean of the 10 environments), varied from 34.6% (CMS-01) to 59.2% (CMS-30), with an average of 49.1%. Inbreeding depression was greater in populations with a wider genetic base, which had never been exposed to inbreeding (CMS-30, BR-107, PH4, Cunha, Saracura, Nitrodent, and Nitroflint). Inbred lines with greater yield means should be obtained from the BR-105, BR-111, CMS-01, CMS-03, BR-106, CMS-14c, and CMS-28 populations. The use of parameter estimates generated by analysis of inbreeding depression, allow to make inferences about frequencies of deleterious alleles in the population. The frequencies of favorable alleles in the parents can be obtained by diallel analysis. The association of these two types of information, can provide a better interpretation of the genetic parameters and also can improve the process of selection of parents for either an intra- or an inter-populational breeding program.

Pouca ênfase tem sido dada na identificação de novas fontes de germoplama tropical que podem ser usadas em programas de melhoramento de milho. São necessárias informações adicionais sobre a performance e classificação heterótica de germoplasmas tropicais. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar acessos elite originados do Programa Latino Americano de Milho (LAMP) que poderiam contribuir para aumentar o nível de heterose com padrões heteróticos do Brasil. Setenta e dois acessos elites do LAMP foram cruzados com os testadores BR 105 (padrão heterótico flint) e BR 106 (padrão heterótico dentado). Os setenta e dois testcrosses, resultantes de cada cruzamento, e nove testemunhas foram avaliados em quatro locais. Utilizou-se o delineamento em látice simples 9 × 9. A análise combinada mostrou diferença significativa entre tratamentos para o caráter peso de espigas sendo também significativa a interação tratamentos × locais. Foram identificados, com ambos os testadores, cruzamentos mais produtivos que o híbrido duplo BR 201 (testemunha comercial). Com a variedade BR 105, a heterose em relação ao pai superior variou de --28% a 26% e os acessos SE 032 e PE 001 foram selecionados para melhoramento. Com a variedade BR 106, a heterose em relação ao pai superior variou de --35% a 17% e os acesses PE 011 e Pasco 14 foram selecionados para posteriores trabalhos de melhoramento. Os acessos selecionados serão melhorados através de esquemas de seleção recorrente para produção e características agronômicas. Estes acessos podem ser explorados, dentro e entre os grupos heteróticos, para produzir combinações híbridas ou para serem usados como variedades melhoradas de milho.

Little emphasis has been placed on identifying new sources of tropical maize germplasm that can be used in breeding programs. Additional information on the performance and heterotic classification of tropical germplasm is needed. This study was conducted to identify elite maize accessions from Latin America that could contribute to increase the level of heterosis with the best heterotic patterns of Brazil. Seventy-two elite accessions from the Latin American Maize Project (LAMP) were crossed with the testers BR 105 (flint kernel Suwan background) and BR 106 (dent kernel Tuxpeño background). The 72 crosses plus 9 checks were evaluated using a simple 9 × 9 lattice in four locations that represent one tropical region. The combined analysis showed highly significant differences among treatments for ear weight and the interaction treatment × location was also significant. With both testers better crosses for ear weight were identified in relation to the double cross BR 201 (commercial check). With the tester BR 105, the high parent heterosis ranged from --28% to 26%, the accessions SE 032 and PE 001 were selected for further work. With the tester BR 106, the high parent heterosis ranged from --35% to 17% and the accessions PE 011 and Pasco 14 were selected for further work. The selected accessions will be improved through recurrent selection schemes to increase yield and improve agronomic traits. Afterwards they can be exploited, within and between heterotic groups, to produce highly productive hybrid combinations, or used per se as improved maize varieties.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a adaptabilidade e estabilidade de cultivares de milho-pipoca avaliadas pela Embrapa-Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Milho e Sorgo, no ano agrícola 1991/92. Foram avaliadas 15 cultivares em 19 locais quanto à produtividade, e em 15 locais quanto ao índice de capacidade de expansão (ICE) na região centro-sul do Brasil. As cultivares GO 100P, MF 1001, Pirapoca-Amarela, Pirapoca-Branca e Colorado Pop 1, foram mais promissoras, pois apresentaram boas médias de produtividade (1.700 a 2.100 kg/ha de grãos) e razoáveis ICE (17 a 21 mL/mL). Quanto à variável produtividade, as cultivares Pirapoca-Amarela e Colorado Pop 1 apresentaram-se adaptadas a ambientes favoráveis, e foram estáveis. As cultivares MF 1001, Pirapoca-Branca e GO 100P, demonstraram capacidade satisfatória no aproveitamento dos estímulos ambientais, e foram estáveis. Todas foram estáveis em relação ao ICE, e as cultivares MF 1001, Colorado Pop 1, Pirapoca-Amarela e Pirapoca-Branca demonstraram capacidade satisfatória no aproveitamento dos estímulos ambientais. A cultivar GO 100P foi melhor adaptada para ambientes favoráveis.

The purpose of this work was to study the adaptability and stability of popcorn cultivars evaluated by Embrapa-Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Milho e Sorgo in the year 1991/92. Fifteen cultivars were evaluated for yield, in 19 environments, and for popping expansion, in 15 environments, at the central-south of Brazil. The cultivars GO 100P, MF 1001, Pirapoca-Amarela, Pirapoca-Branca and Colorado Pop 1 were more promising, showing higher grain yield average (1,700 to 2,100 kg/ha) and reasonable popping expansion (17 to 21 mL/mL). In relation to yield, Pirapoca-Amarela and ColoradoPop1 cultivars were more adapted to favorable environments, and were stable. The MF 1001, Pirapoca-Branca and GO 100P showed to be responsive to the environmental stimulus, and were stable. In relation to popping expansion, all the cultivars were stable, and MF 1001, ColoradoPop1, Pirapoca-Amarela e Pirapoca-Branca cultivars showed to be responsive to the environmental stimulus. GO 100P cultivar was adapted to favorable environments.
