Abstract Backgroud The prevalence of obesity has systematically been increased in the population, including children and adolescents, around the world. Objectives To describe reference percentile curves for waist circumference (WC) in Brazilian children and provide cut-off values of WC to identify children at risk for obesity. Methods A multicenter, prospective, cross-sectional study was performed with children aged from 6 to 10 years old, enrolled in public and private elementary schools from 13 cities of the São Paulo State. Height, weight, and WC were measured in duplicate in 22,000 children (11,199 boys). To establish the WC best cut-off value for obesity diagnosis, ROC curves with children classified as normal weight and obese were calculated, according to BMI curves, stratified by gender and age, and the Youden Index was utilized as the maximum potential effectiveness of this biomarker. A p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results WC values increased with age in both boys and girls. The prevalence of obesity in each age group varied from 17% (6 years old) to 21.6% (9 years old) among boys, and from 14.1% (7 years old) to 17.3 % (9 years old) among girls. ROC analyses have shown the 75th percentile as a cut-off for obesity risk, and the diagnosis of obesity is classified on the 85th percentile or more. Conclusion Age and gender specific reference curves of WC for Brazilian children and cut-off values for obesity risk may be used for national screening and interventional studies to reduce the obesity burden in Brazil. The methodology developed in this study through the acquisition of fingerprint chromatograms by liquid chromatography-diode array detector (LC-DAD), aided by principal component analysis, made it possible to assess, in a rational way, the chemical differences between six accessions of Lippia alba and to verify the influence of the method of extraction, the seasonality and the individuality of each accession on chemical composition of its extracts. Among all extracts analyzed against cancer cell lines, eight of them showed to be more promising against a human leukemia cell line (HL-60), displaying cell growth inhibition percentage ranging between 40.0 and 52.0%. In the inhibitory activity assays against acetylcholinesterase enzyme, all extracts showed weak inhibitory effect, with highlight only for six of them, which displayed inhibition ranging between 27.0 and 32.0%.

Corrosion processes were evaluated for AISI 316 and AISI 1020 steels by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and light microscopy. Coupons were immersed in four crude oil samples with different total acid numbers (TANs) for 48 days at room temperature. The steels were also exposed to three blends (B1-B3), produced by quaternary mixtures of the oils, with lower TANs than their respective original oils. SEM micrographs showed pitting-type corrosion in most cases. AFM imaging showed drastic changes in the peak-to-peak values, topographic profiles and phase images of the AISI 1020 coupons exposed to all oils and blend B3 as compared to the unexposed steel. Defects were produced on the surface of almost all the samples exposed to naphthenic corrosion. Exposure to the oil blends reduced the extent of the naphthenic corrosion on the coupons, especially blends B1 and B2. The oil mixtures (blends) reduced corrosion.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The genus Eremanthus is recognized by the predominance of sesquiterpene lactones from the furanoheliangolide type, a class of substances extensively tested against cancer cell lines. Thus, the species E. crotonoides (DC.) Sch. Bip., Asteraceae, obtained on "restinga" vegetation was evaluated against U251 and U87-MG glioma cell lines using the MTT colorimetric assay. Dichloromethane fraction was cytotoxic to both glioblastoma multiforme cell lines. We then conducted UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS analysis of the dichloromethane fraction, which allowed the identification of the sesquiterpene lactones centratherin and goyazensolide. The isolation of centratherin was performed using chromatographic techniques and the identification of this substance was confirmed according to NMR data. Cytotoxic activity of centratherin alone was also evaluated against both U251 and U87-MG cells, which showed IC50 values comparable with those obtained for the commercial anticancer drug doxorubicin. All the tested samples showed cytotoxic activity against glioblastoma multiforme cells which suggests that E. crotonoides extracts may be important sources of antiproliferative substances and that the centratherin may serve as prototype for developing new antiglioblastoma drugs.

Uncaria tomentosa (Willd.) DC. e Uncaria guianensis (Aubl.)
Uncaria tomentosa (Willd.) DC. and Uncaria guianensis (Aubl.) Gmel., commercially known as cat's claw, are large woody vines native of the Amazon and Central America rainforests. These Rubiaceae species face nowadays an imminent risk of extinction due to indiscriminate harvesting in the wild as well as to increasing deforestation of their natural habitat. This work describes in vitro cultivation methods for both species with determination, by HPLC, of the pentacyclic oxindole alkaloid contents and profiles of the plant material. The results have proved that the methods we developed were able to produce plants with alkaloid profiles and contents similar to the wild and in vivo cultivated species, and with the additional advantage of producing suitable young plants in a shorter period of time. The data showed that the in vitro technique can be a feasible tool for the growth of the species, and may thus be important for their commercialization and for their conservation as a forest resource.

Blood samples from 178 new-born children in the nurseries of hospital located in São Paulo Municipality were examined. The samples from 90 children were obtained before "The First National Day For Poliomyelitis Vaccination" and 88 were analysed after "The Second National Day For Poliomyelitis Vaccination", both of them achieved in 1980. During these vaccination campaigns, it was observed that the number of children susceptible for three poliovirus serotypes decreased from 8.9% to 4.5%; on the other hand, there was an increase in immunized children for the three serotypes from 38.9% to 52.3%. These differences were statis- tically significative at level of 5.0%. After mass immunization, an increase in relation to the neutralizing antibodies titres against polioviruses was observed in newborns, who presented titres equal or higher than 8. The proportion of children turned from 68.9% to 81.8%, from 73.3% to 83.0% and from 57.8% to 70.5%, respectively for serotypes 1, 2 e 3. These differences were statistically significative, at level of 5.0%, concerning to polioviruses 1 and 3.

The occurrence of intestinal infection with enterovirus was investigated in 300 healthy children of median age of two days old, born in hospital; the children were analysed before being discharged from hospital. For the investigation, these children were divided into three groups, and each group was composed by equal number of cases. The first group was examined during the period preceding The First National Day for Poliomyelitis Vaccination held in 1980; the second group was analysed soon after this mass immunization and the third after The Second National Day for Poliomyelitis Vaccination, which was achieved in the same year. On purpose of enterovirus investigation, it was analysed the single faeces sample obtained from every child by means of rectal swab. In 300 newborn children analysed, it was obtained poliovírus isolation in 13 (4.3%); among these eight belonged to the first group and five to the second group. From the infected children, twelve eliminated poliovírus 1 and one poliovírus 3. There were no isolation of other enteroviruses. It is considered the possibility of poliovírus infection by transplacental transmission either via delivery canal or through cross infection in hospital environment.
