Abstract: Urban dynamics can be characterized more effectively by considering spatial aspects in studies. This paper, using a synthetic spatially correlated data set, aims to model the spatial effect on travel mode choice based on geostatistics precepts. A method was proposed based on three main steps. The first step consists of building synthetic spatially correlated data, using the intrinsic spatial dependence on travel demand data and mathematical principles of bilinear interpolation. The following two steps correspond to the modeling approach. The Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis stage aimed to attest the existence of spatial autocorrelation of the data set using two indicators: Moran and G-SIVAR (Global Spatial Indicator Based on Variogram). The Confirmatory Spatial Data Analysis stage proposed the calibration of two Binomial Logit models. The first model includes only the original database variables (non-spatial model). The second one is analogous to the original but added to spatial covariates obtained by geostatistical concepts (spatial model). A 15% increase in cross-validation hit rates is achieved when spatial variables are included. This paper presents three significant research contributions: (1) The methodological procedure to model spatial effect on travel mode choice; (2) The proposal of spatial covariates based on geostatistical assumptions; and (3) The suggestion of a simple procedure to propose a simulation of a spatially correlated database.

Abstract Travel demand models have been developed and refined over the years to consider a characteristic normally found in travel data: spatial autocorrelation. Another important feature of travel demand data is its multivariate nature. However, regarding the public transportation demand, there is a lack of multivariate spatial models that consider the scarce nature of travel data, which generally are expensive to collect, and also need an appropriate level of detail. Thus, the main aim of this study was to estimate the Boarding variable along a bus line from the city of São Paulo - Brazil, by means of a multivariate geostatistical modeling at the bus stop level. As specific objectives, a comparative analysis conducted by applying Universal Kriging, Ordinary Kriging and Ordinary Least Squares Regression for the same travel demand variable was proposed. From goodness-of-fit measures, the results indicated that Geostatistics is a competitive tool comparing to classical modeling, emphasizing the multivariate interpolator Universal Kriging. Therefore, three main contributions can be highlighted: (1) the methodological advance of using a multivariate geostatistical approach, at the bus stop level, on public transportation demand modeling; (2) the benefits provided by the models regarding the land use and bus network planning; and (3) resource savings of field surveys for collecting travel data.

Abstract: Among the exploratory spatial data analysis tools, there are indicators of spatial association, which measure the degree of spatial dependence of analysed data and can be applied to quantitative data. Another procedure available is geostatistics, which is based on the variogram, describing quantitatively and qualitatively the spatial structure of a variable. The aim of this paper is to use the concept of the variogram to develop a global indicator of spatial association (Global Spatial Indicator Based on Variogram - G-SIVAR). The G-SIVAR indicator has a satisfactory performance for spatial association, with sensibility for anisotropy cases. Because the indicator is based on geostatistics, it is appropriate for quantitative and qualitative data. The developed indicator is derived from theoretical global variogram, providing more details of the spatial structure of the data. The G-SIVAR indicator is based on spatial dissimilarity, while traditional indexes, such as Moran’s I, are based on spatial similarity.

Abstract: Road traffic accidents occur daily caused by different factors leading to varying degrees of injury severity. Considering this, many studies have been developed to identify and understand these factors to implement preventive actions. A Decisión Tree (DT) is one of the techniques that can genérate classifications and predictions by detecting a priori imknown patterns. This study aims to identify the characteristics of municipalities with high and very high fatality rates caused by traffic accidents, using a macro level dataset and a DT algorithm (CART - Classification And Regression Tree). Therefore, macro level data from the municipalities of Sao Paulo state (Brazil) were used, such as demographic and socioeconomic data, fatality rates and other variables related to traffic. The results indicated the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as the most important variable, and the municipalities were characterized mainly considering the size of the highway network and vehicle ffeet (trucks, minibuses, cars, motorcycles). These characteristics could provide support to the government to plan mitigating actions in municipalities with the highest tendency to high traffic fatality rates.

Resumo: O principal objetivo deste estudo é estimar variáveis relacionadas ao planejamento de transportes, especialmente valores de produção de viagens por Transportes Coletivo (TCO), propondo um procedimento geoestatístico. O procedimento é uma junção de deconvolução de semivariograma e Krigagem com Deriva Externa (KED). O método consiste em assumir inicialmente uma amostra sistemática desagregada a partir de dados agregados por unidade de área. Posteriormente, utiliza-se a KED para prever a variável primária, considerando a população como input (variável secundária). Esta pesquisa utiliza dois tipos de informações sobre a cidade de Salvador (Bahia, Brasil): dados da pesquisa domiciliar origem-destino, realizada em 1995 e dados do censo de 2010. Além de destacar-se pela aplicação da Geoestatística no campo do planejamento de transportes, este artigo demonstra um método simples de deconvolução de semivariograma para dados agregados de viagens. Estes aspectos foram pouco explorados nesta área de pesquisa. Portanto, este trabalho apresenta três principais contribuições: 1) estimação de dados de viagens urbanas em localizações espaciais não amostradas; 2) obtenção de valores da variável de interesse derivada de outras variáveis; e 3) apresentação de um procedimento simplificado para deconvolução de semivariograma, considerando que dados desagregados, geralmente, não estão disponíveis, para manter a confidencialidade de dados individuais.

Abstract: The main objective of this study is to estimate variables related to transportation planning, in particular transit trip production, by proposing a geostatistical procedure. The procedure combines the semivariogram deconvolution and Kriging with External Drift (KED). The method consists of initially assuming a disaggregated systematic sample from aggregate data. Subsequently, KED was applied to estimate the primary variable, considering the population as a secondary input. This research assesses two types of information related to the city of Salvador (Bahia, Brazil): an origin-destination dataset based on a home-interview survey carried out in 1995 and the 2010 census data. Besides standing out for the application of Geostatistics in the field of transportation planning, this paper introduces the concepts of semivariogram deconvolution applied to aggregated travel data. Thus far these aspects have not been explored in the research area. In this way, this paper mainly presents three contributions: 1) estimating urban travel data in unsampled spatial locations; 2) obtaining the values of the variable of interest deriving out of other variables; and 3) introducing a simple semivariogram deconvolution procedure, considering that disaggregated data are not available to maintain the confidentiality of individual data.

RESUMO OBJETIVO Realizar uma análise espacial da ocorrência de atos de violência (específicamente roubos) em transporte público, identificando as regiões de maior incidência, por meio da geoestatística, e possíveis causas com auxílio de análise multicritério em Sistema de Informação Geográfica. MÉTODOS A unidade de análise é a zona de tráfego da pesquisa Origem-Destino, realizada em Salvador, BA, Brasil, em 2013. Os roubos registrados pela Secretaria de Segurança Pública da Bahia, no mesmo ano, foram localizados e compatibilizados aos limites das zonas de tráfego e, posteriormente, associados aos respectivos centroides. Após determinação das regiões de maior probabilidade de ocorrências, foi feita uma análise geográfica de possíveis causas na região de maior potencial, considerando fatores analisados por meio de uma análise multicritério em ambiente de Sistema de Informação Geográfica. RESULTADOS A execução das duas etapas deste trabalho permitiu identificar áreas correspondentes à maior probabilidade de ocorrência de roubo em transporte público. Além disso, foram identificados três trechos viários (Estrada da Liberdade, Rua Pero Vaz e Avenida General San Martin) mais vulneráveis, localizados nessas áreas. Nesses trechos, os fatores que mais contribuem para o potencial de ocorrência de roubo em ônibus são: F1 - proximidade a locais que facilitam a fuga, F3 - grande movimentação de pessoas e F2 - ausência de policiamento, respectivamente. CONCLUSÕES Com o uso da Krigagem indicativa (estimação geoestatística), é possível a construção de uma superfície espacial de probabilidades de ocorrências, que pode ser uma ferramenta útil para implementação de políticas públicas. A análise multicritério no ambiente do Sistema de Informação Geográfica permitiu a compreensão dos fatores espaciais relacionados ao fenômeno em análise.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To carry out a spatial analysis of the occurrence of acts of violence (specifically robberies) in public transportation, identifying the regions of greater incidence, using geostatistics, and possible causes with the aid of a multicriteria analysis in the Geographic Information System. METHODS The unit of analysis is the traffic analysis zone of the survey named Origem-Destino, carried out in Salvador, state of Bahia, in 2013. The robberies recorded by the Department of Public Security of Bahia in 2013 were located and made compatible with the limits of the traffic analysis zones and, later, associated with the respective centroids. After determining the regions with the highest probability of robbery, we carried out a geographic analysis of the possible causes in the region with the highest robbery potential, considering the factors analyzed using a multicriteria analysis in a Geographic Information System environment. RESULTS The execution of the two steps of this study allowed us to identify areas corresponding to the greater probability of occurrence of robberies in public transportation. In addition, the three most vulnerable road sections (Estrada da Liberdade, Rua Pero Vaz, and Avenida General San Martin) were identified in these areas. In these sections, the factors that most contribute with the potential for robbery in buses are: F1 - proximity to places that facilitate escape, F3 - great movement of persons, and F2 - absence of policing, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Indicator Kriging (geostatistical estimation) can be used to construct a spatial probability surface, which can be a useful tool for the implementation of public policies. The multicriteria analysis in the Geographic Information System environment allowed us to understand the spatial factors related to the phenomenon under analysis.

ResumoEste trabalho apresenta um método sequencial, envolvendo aplicação de Análise em Componentes Principais (ACP) e logit binomial para previsão de escolha por modo de transporte motorizado. A aplicação da ACP permite reduzir o banco de dados multicolinear a componentes não correlacionadas entre si. Tais components são utlizadas, posteriormente, como variáveis explicativas em modelos logísticos binomiais. Os dados utilizados para o desenvolvimento deste trabalho são provenientes da entrevista domiciliar da Pesquisa Origem-Destino de 2007, realizada na Região Metropolitana de São Paulo. Os modelos obtidos apresentaram bom poder preditivo e valores coerentes e significativos de parâmetros calibrados. Na etapa de validação, foram obtidas taxas de acertos variando entre 69% a 92%. Finalmente, o método proposto é razoável, sendo uma boa alternativa para o caso de dados multicolineares em métodos de regressão.

AbstractThis paper presents a sequential method involving application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and binomial logit for forecasting of motorized travel mode choice. The application of ACP reduces the multicolinear database into uncorrelated components. Such components are used later as explanatory variables in binomial logit models. The data used are from the Origin-Destination Survey carried out in 2007 in São Paulo Metropolitan Area. The gotten models showed good accuracy and consistent and significant calibrated parameters. In the validation step, the hit rates were obtained ranging from 69% to 92%. Finally, the proposed method is reasonable to be a good alternative for the case of multicollinear data used in regression methods.

O objetivo do presente trabalho é propor um método sequencial para interpolação espacial da escolha modal em domicílios não amostrados, através de técnicas de Árvore de Decisão e Geoestatística. Inicialmente, foi aplicada a técnica de Árvore de Decisão, com a finalidade de estimar a probabilidade de escolha do modo em domicílios pesquisados, determinando assim a variável numérica a ser krigada posteriormente. Os dados utilizados foram da Pesquisa Origem-Destino e da Pesquisa de Opinião sobre avaliação do transporte público, realizadas em 2007/2008 em São Carlos (SP). A área selecionada para modelagem geoestatística pelo estudo foi uma pequena região da cidade com 110 pontos amostrados. A escolha modal foi estimada na área estudada, revelando uma tendência de aumento da probabilidade do uso do carro do centro para a periferia da região. O método proposto pode ser uma alternativa às abordagens tradicionais, tanto na modelagem não-espacial, especialmente para o caso de falta de dados de pesquisa de preferência declarada, como em modelagem espacial, permitindo estimar valores em várias coordenadas geográficas.

The main objective of this study is to propose a sequential method for spatial interpolation of mode choice for household locations where choices are unobserved based on Decision Tree analysis and Geostatistics. Initially, Decision Tree analysis was applied in order to estimate the probability of mode choice in surveyed households, thus determining the numeric variable to be estimated by Ordinary Kriging. The data used is from the Origin-Destination Survey and Urban Transportation Evaluation Survey, carried out in 2007/2008 in the city of São Carlos (São Paulo/Brazil). The study area selected for geoestatistical modeling is a small region of the city with 110 sampling points. The mode choice was estimated for the study area revealing a tendency of increasing the probability of car usage from the center to the periphery of region. The proposed method can be an alternative to traditional approaches in both non-spatial modeling, especially for the case of lack of data from stated preference survey, as in spatial modeling, allowing estimation in various geographic coordinates.

O presente trabalho visa apresentar uma metodologia realizada em duas etapas, envolvendo aplicação de modelos não paramétricos (Árvore de Decisão - AD) e paramétricos (Regressão Linear Múltipla-RLM) para previsão de escolha modal. A aplicação da AD permite encontrar relações entre variáveis socioeconômicas e escolha modal, bem como discretizar as variáveis numéricas e categóricas para construção dos modelos lineares na etapa posterior. Os dados utilizados para o desenvolvimento deste trabalho são provenientes da entrevista domiciliar da Pesquisa Origem-Destino de 2007/2008, realizada na cidade de São Carlos (SP). O modelo não paramétrico apresentou um total de acertos em torno de 70%, com alta associação entre valores categóricos estimados e observados do modo de transporte. Após transformação de todas as variáveis independentes em binárias através da técnica de AD, foram obtidos modelos lineares pelo método stepwise com bom poder preditivo para as três categorias de modo de transporte consideradas. Além disso, a validação dos modelos lineares com 30% da amostra restante apresentou baixos valores de erro médio e variância dos resíduos. Finalmente, o método proposto pode ser considerado razoável, sendo uma boa alternativa às abordagens tradicionais.

This paper presents a two-step methodology, involving application of nonparametric (Decision Tree - DT) and parametric models (Multiple Linear Regression - MLR) to forecast modal choice. The DT application allows finding relationships between socioeconomic variables and modal choice and discretizing the numerical and categorical variables for the construction of linear models in the later stage. The data used are from the Origin-Destination Survey carried out in 2007/2008 in the city of São Carlos (SP). The accuracy of the nonparametric model is around 70%, with high association between estimated and observed categorical values of the travel mode. After discretizing all independent variables using DT, stepwise linear models, with a good accuracy for the three categories of travel mode, were obtained. Moreover, the validation of linear models with 30% of remaining sample showed low average of errors and variance of residuals. Finally, the proposed and reasonable method could be a good alternative to traditional approaches.

O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o comportamento relacionado a viagens de trabalhadores do setor industrial e comercial, em termos de três grupos de variáveis: participação em atividades, características socioeconômicas e uso do solo. Este trabalho baseia-se na Pesquisa Origem-Destino, realizada na Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP) em 1997. Foram encontradas relações entre as variáveis consideradas (Árvore de Decisão), e a significância estatística das variáveis independentes (Regressão Linear Múltipla). Foi analisada a influência dos três grupos de variáveis na escolha dos padrões de viagens: (A) Variáveis socioeconômicas (Renda domiciliar, Vale transporte e Posse de automóveis) afetam a sequencia do modo de transporte; (B) Participação em atividades (Estuda e Trabalha) tem um efeito na sequencia dos motivos de viagem; e (C) variáveis de uso do solo (proporção acumulada de empregos por determinado raio a partir dos centroides das zonas de tráfego dos domicílios) influenciam a sequencia de destinos escolhidos, sobretudo para o caso de trabalhadores na indústria. Os diferentes arranjos espaciais das atividades econômicas (comerciais e industriais) na cidade influenciam a viagem dos trabalhadores. Este artigo contribui essencialmente através da proposta de uma variável de uso do solo, proveniente do modelo de oportunidades intervenientes, bem como na apresentação de um método que combina a aplicação conjunta de técnicas de análise multivariada de dados exploratórias e confirmatórias.

The objective of this work is to analyze the travel behavior of industry and commerce sector workers in terms of three variables groups: activity participation, socioeconomic characteristics and land use. This work is based on the Origin-Destination survey carried out in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area (SPMA) in 1997. Relationships were found between the concerned variables (Decision Tree), and the statistical significance of independent variables was assessed (Multiple Linear Regression). We analyzed the influence of the three variables groups on travel pattern choices: (A) socioeconomic variables (Household Income, Transit Pass Ownership and Car-ownership) affect the travel mode sequence; (B) activity participation (Study, Work) has an effect on the trip purpose sequence; and (C) land use variables (accumulated proportion of jobs by distance buffers starting from the home traffic zone centroid) influence the sequence of destinations chosen, especially in the case of industry sector workers. The different spatial distributions of economic activities (commercial and industrial) in the urban environment influence the travel of workers. This paper contributes essentially proposing the land use variable, through the intervening opportunities model as well as the presentation of a methodology, formed by application of exploratory and confirmatory techniques of multivariate data analysis.
